all is back, which means Fashion Week is upon us. If you’re in the fashion industry, you know that this is one of the most exciting times of the year. This season, Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week will have a new home at Lincoln Center. I’m excited to see what the designers have in store for us. I just flew back from Europe, where I had a blast. London is really one of my favorite cities in the world. I place it right after Paris. Of course I visited all the shopping malls from Selfridges to Harrods (which, by the way, is not owned by Al Fayed anymore, but a family from Qatar), went for the first time to the charming mall called Liberty, one of the oldest shopping centers in London. Walking on Bond Street, I found myself in front of my good friend Louis, (Louis Vuitton, that is!) who just took a place there. The store windows are ginormous and showcase all the past collector bags—you’ll even find ones that can’t be purchased anymore. On the first floor, right when you come up the stairs, there are about twenty mannequins, each wearing an outfit from a particular season—from the hat to the bag, the shoes, the jewelry—I mean everything! Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2010 advertising campaign is gorgeous. It’s a flashback to the late fifties and early sixties and makes you feel like you just stepped into a scene from “Mad Men”. Cleavage exposed, tight waists, and full, sophisticated silhouettes. Christy Turlington, Natalia

Vodianova, and Karen Elson prove that perfection does exist. And who, may I ask, exemplifies that era in fashion better than Dita Von Teese? Our cover girl is the queen of looking fifties-perfect, with her tiny 20-inch waist, cat-eye makeup and ample bustline. We are so proud to have her back in Genlux. One of the strongest colors this fall is chocolate. This warm, yummy hue goes with practically everything. A must-have this season is knee-high boots. If you’re going to get some, I suggest you invest in the Jimmy Choo 24:7! It’s a covetable capsule collection with updated versions of Tamara Mellon’s favorite styles in a variety of colors, materials and heel heights. This is the definitive assortment of iconic Jimmy Choo boots, perfect for day-to-evening, seven days a week. (p123) Another great color for this season is navy, and Giorgio Armani has created a few gorgeous coats and cropped jackets in the color. I also find the Fendi Gothic Romans suede lace-up boots absolutely adorable. (p122) And to feel sexy and beautiful, there’s one designer you can count on: Alaïa is the man. He is a fashion god! I once again fell in love with his dresses. They have the most incredible shape, which helps makes your body look so sexy. I strongly believe that every woman should own one of his dresses to understand what it means to be and feel like a woman. (p28)

Arcade Boutique opened its doors for an intimate book signing for Ar m Candy, the latest book by Jill Kargman. Hosts Rochelle Fredston, Arcade owner, and actress Lindsay Price welcomed guests into the stylish store to have the author sign their copy of her book and to try on chic designer fashion. Stylists and tastemakers sipped on “Arcade Lemonade” Hpnotiq specialty cocktails and enjoyed a full silver and blue candy bar. A portion of sales from the evening benefited Clothes Off Our Back, including a donation of the T.Cyia necklace worn by Lindsay Price that evening, signed Ar m Candy copies, and additional ARCADE Boutique designer items which will all be posted for auction on Arcade’s website. THE DEAD SEA

In the late fifties it was considered the new California Riviera, but the Salton Sea is actually a dying body of water. It is our state’s largest lake—even larger than Lake Tahoe—with a salinity level so high that only one breed of fish, the tilapia, is able to survive there. Contaminated water runoff containing pesticides from local agriculture also contributes to the death of the thousands of fish that wash up onto its shores daily—creating the eerily beautiful mirage of shimmering white sand beaches. Here, the Salton Sea’s surrounding structures that are being consumed by the salt make a surreal backdrop for our green-themed fashion story. Photography by Tracey Morris. Styled by Alexis Beck.

As Courtney Fortune finds, this multifaceted beauty may not be willing to spill dating details, but she wants you to know that she’s just getting warmed up. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Katerina “Kat” Graham began her career doing Barbie commercials and Disney before breaking on the big screen. “I landed 17 Again with Zac Efron after a world tour with The Black Eyed Peas. After that run, and putting myself through school to be a recording engineer, I landed the role in The Vampire Diaries,” she recounts. “I believe it’s important to be multilingual and multifaceted in order to be an interesting person, to know about different cultures, and have a wide range of understanding about life.” Indeed. She’s also an incredible dancer, a philanthropist, and speaks four languages. In addition to balancing her triple-threat image, Katerina is a fan of fearless fashion and a devout online shopper. She describes her style as high-fashion hipster with a throwback to the early eighties. So who’s her favorite designer? “That’s a dangerous question. One of my favorites is Jeremy Scott. He’s not afraid of pushing boundaries and doing something different while maintaining an independent style.” She also adds her new-found inspiration from the Genlux shoot. “I’ve become more aware of Valentino after we shot in allValentino pieces, from the lace heels to the red dresses, to the shirts with beaded ruffles.”

Time for another dangerous question. When asked if she’s currently in a relationship, Katerina replies with a sweet but very tight-lipped, “I am.” And for how long? “Fifty years.” She laughs. “I’m just joking. But it’s been quite a while. I have a great partner who is very supportive and would love me if I’m wearing a Valentino gown or had rips in my jeans.” Not about to give away any clues (despite some innocent prodding), she says, “I try to keep my private life a secret because everything is out in the media, and there’s really nothing to keep my life guarded but me.” Amidst the whirlwind, the actress makes it a priority to be calm. “I stay focused, never get ahead of myself, and do what I love. They say you cannot do a million things and be good at everything. But if you focus on one thing at a time, you really can.” For the time being, she’s focused on filming the second season of The Vampire Diaries, the release of The Roommate with Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, and the premiere of her starring role in Honey 2. All while preparing for her debut on Warner Bros Records. “My single “Sassy” just dropped on iTunes. I will be pushing that, doing charity work, and rocking my funky and crazy fashion. That’s about it.” G

Miss Dita Von Teese is at the very top of her game. She is the self-styled queen of burlesque—the most famous since Gypsy Rose Lee. As Stephen Christopher discovers, this small-town girl from Michigan, who pulls in as much as six figures for a single performance, has big corporations like Perrier, Cointreau, and Virgin Atlantic Airways knocking at her door.

I

catch up with Dita Von Teese at her new Los Angeles home in the fashionable Laughlin section of Los Feliz. She’s just come from her Pilates class, and her makeup-free porcelain skin is glowing. True to her vision to become the world’s most famous burlesque star, she’s achieved it through hard work, discipline and, well, nice assets. “Mari of Windsor Pilates and I understand the importance of keeping the backside in shape,” Dita says half-jokingly.

When I first went to her I said, ‘Look Mari, there’s only one thing that matters: what I look like when I’m walking out the door!’ As someone who makes her living in a G-string, I know a lot about keeping my ass in shape…oh, and good lighting.” Dita’s home is decorated as one might expect. The living room is an eclectic collection of predominantly forties-style furniture with a touch of taxidermy—two very large white stuffed swans. In the kitchen, there’s a pink O’Keefe & Merritt–type stove and matching pink wall coverings. Even though her décor is a perfect complement to her persona, Dita is amused by people’s misconceptions of her. “They think I sit around all day in a negligee, putting on makeup, watching old movies, listening to forties music, and trotting around the house in Marabou slippers—but just this morning, I was cleaning dog pee off the floor,” she laughs. She takes me on a tour of the home, and then invites me to see her closet—a bedroom that’s been converted into a shoe sanctuary: rows of floor-to-ceiling Chinese-red-lacquered racks cradle hundreds of red-soled, size 6.5 Louboutins. “Christian Louboutin and I met at my show in London and hit it off, and

now we go on vacation together. I was just in Egypt with him on his fabulous red-bottomed boat.” Jean-Paul Gaultier is another of Dita’s friends. “He was the first designer to lend me clothes. When nobody would lend to me, he looked me right in the eye and said, ‘Whatever you want to wear, any time—even if you want to borrow the haute couture to go to the grocery store—you can.’” A front-row fixture at Paris fashion week’s haute couture shows, Dita appears in them as well. “Last season, I walked in the Gaultier runway show in Paris.” Her other favorite designers? “I have lots of favorites. I wear a lot of Dior, a lot of Moschino…and I’m excited to be wearing the Louis Vuitton fall collection! I wear Gaultier and Elie Saab on the red carpet. My shoes are Christian’s—he is the master of all shoes of the entire universe forever and ever!” As much as she loves clothes, there’s something she hates about them. “I don’t like to pick up and put my clothes away,” she confesses. “I’m that girl who likes to drop everything on my way in and get into bed. My biggest luxury is my assistant, who

Dita Von Teese has been performing her burlesque routine since 1991. “I’m not what you call an overnight success.” Now, she earns upwards of six figures. “For like a seven minutes performance,” she says. Her list of fashionable followers reads like an A-list Who’s-Who: Vivienne Westwood, Elizabeth Taylor, Catherine Deneuve, Sonia Rykiel, Karl Lagerfeld, Kanye West, George Michael, Steven Spielberg…and the list goes on.

For all her personal relationship heartbreaks, including a well-publicized failed marriage to rocker Marilyn Manson, Dita Von Teese is now enjoying a fairy tale romance. Tomorrow she’ll be off to the South of France to see her new love, the French aristocrat Count Louis-Marie de Castelbajac. “He took me to his family’s castle and I was completely wooed and couldn’t speak for days,” Dita says, laughing. “He thought there was something wrong with me because I was so in shock that someone could treat me so well. I was used to people hurling things at me in the middle of the night in a cocaine rage. So to be in this castle and have this man cooking for me…I was stunned into silence.” Photos courtesy of Cointreau Photography Aaron Settipane

picks them up and puts them away. I know it’s probably shocking that someone who loves clothes so much would treat them so badly. I just hate hangers…they get all tangled up, and it’s like metal clinking. I get crazy. I just can’t deal with hangers.”

In 2006, Dita wowed the crowds at the famed Crazy Horse in Paris—the first guest performer in the club’s 55-year history. Then there was the time she took it all off for Francis Ford Coppola. “His family hired me to dance at his birthday party. The stage was basically their living room, and there’s Francis and Sofia and Roman, and Francis’s wife, and George Lucas. Sometimes I do get intimidated, but I like the nervous energy.” Similarly, corporations love Dita. Perrier has placed her likeness on bottles and cans, and stars her in a spectacular website: perrierbydita.com. She’s been a VIVA GLAM model for M·A·C cosmetics, and enjoys a lucrative Cointreau contract. “My brand ambassadorship for Cointreau has been one of my favorite collaborations!” she enthuses. “I travel the world in a show I created to fit in with their “Be Cointreuversial” tagline. And what does she consider her most exciting corporate coup? “I was in Europe and my office phoned to tell me, ‘Virgin wants to paint you on the side of their jumbo jet!’ So I flew to Vegas, and I’m sitting there with Richard Branson out on the tarmac when this plane full of passengers from London lands, and there’s my picture on the side of it. I turned and shouted to Richard, “I should have paid you for this!”

86 GENLUX FALL / 2010

He’s also the one who took her on her most romantic date. “We went to La Perouse in Paris—the sexiest restaurant ever,” she says. “You can get these private rooms. Seventeenth-century French. The mirrors have all these etchings from people testing their diamonds. It’s incredibly chic.” So what does the girl whom so many will dress up as this Halloween go as herself ? “Every year I like to go as a normal girl. I get a spray tan and a French manicure. I get a blonde wig or a brown wig. I wear jeans. All year long I scan the streets looking for which normal girl I’m going to dress up as. It might be you, normal girl! (She pretends to point at girls around the room.) And I get crazy on Halloween; I get wild.” I express to Dita how really down-to-earth I find her. “I’m humble about who I am,” she admits after some thought. “But not about the show. I think that when the curtain opens on my burlesque show, it’s the best burlesque show you’ll ever see. But I will be humble about things like, ‘Do I think I’m the best dancer?’ No. ‘Do I think I’m the prettiest?’ No. ‘Am I the youngest?’ No. Those aren’t the things I care about. But do I think I did a good job in making a really cool show? Yes. And I did it all myself.” G

amar Kaprelian breezes into the Café Rodeo at the Luxe Hotel on Rodeo Drive and makes a mock run for my table. She apologizes for being late and orders a chopped salad and an iced tea. She’s sporting a brown fedora with black trim, and a denim dress over a lace camisole by Clo. In her Martine Sitbon bag she has Chrome Hearts sunglasses and a copy of T he B i l l i o nai re’s Vi ne gar by Benjamin Wallace. There’s also some Michael Marcus makeup and her secret weapon, CHANEL concealer. Kaprelian raises up an impeccably pedicured foot (still fresh from our shoot a few days before) to reveal a Franco Sarto sandal. “My style is simple but classic,” she says. “I think it goes along with the album.” The album she’s referring to is “Sinner Or A Saint,” her brilliant debut CD on Interscope records that has all the makings of a hit, with catchy seventies-style music and lyrics. “It’s been an emotional journey. My record comes out soon, and it’s something that I’ve been working on for six years,” she says, holding back tears. “I’m getting emotional just talking about it. It’s been a lot of ups and downs. I’m definitely crying. I’m totally getting emotional. I’m so happy to get it out there. I’m so happy. I feel very blessed.”

This is Kaprelian’s second go-around for the golden ring, or, in this case, the platinum disc. The first was when, barely out of high school, she was signed to a recording contract with RCA Records. “I ended up recording about fifty pop songs for an album that never came out,” she laments. “After two years, we parted ways and it was devastating. Dev-a-stat-ing!” So she did what any of us would have done. “I holed up for a year and a half. I devoted myself to writing songs that rang true to my style. Then my producer, Xandy Barry, said to me, ‘Tamar, I think we should try something with this whole new YouTube thing.’ So I did a cover of ‘Apologize.’ I did it in one take. Eventually, it made it into a Web contest that OneRepublic was holding. Two weeks later I got an email from Interscope saying that out of thousands of entries, mine won—and that’s when record exec James Mor mile called to take a meeting.” Kaprelian’s version of ‘Apologize’ went viral, and to date has been viewed more than 2,943,523 times.

With second chances—especially ones this big—comes reflection, and the first single from the new CD is aptly titled ‘New Day.’ “‘New Day’ was written about the experience of starting fresh—with a clean palette. Listen, if you put your heart and soul into something and do it passionately and do it well, it always pays off—even when things take a little longer than expected.”

hile the economy rocks and rolls, cosmetic consumers are still spending. But gone are the diva days of “Doc, do everything!” Now, mindful of stretching every dollar, beauty mavens are seeking the silver bullets—treatments that might cost a bit more, but are known to be safe, natural looking, and highly effective. Patients are also showing more patience when it comes to selecting the right doctor. They’ll pay their bottom dollar, but only for a top doc. Glam guys and gals are still flocking to Dr. Ezra Kest, M.D.,

esteemed doctor to the elite, who specializes in cosmetic and traditional dermatology. Despite a thriving practice, Dr. Kest is the first to say that patients today are “much more budget-conscious.” The Kest Clinic touts several silver bullets, but perhaps the shiniest of all is TotalFX™ by Lumenis® —a fractional laser that his patients swear is more like a magic wand. Dr. Kest says, “This procedure is like a micro face lift. The laser removes numerous minute pieces of skin, while simultaneously stimulating collagen production.” After the skin heals, the results can be extraordinary. The doctor says patients should expect to experience “skin tightening, texture improvement, acne scar reduction, and diminution of skin discoloration.”

100 GENLUX FALL / 2010

Catering to Hollywood’s royalty, Kest notes that even the well heeled are cash-conscious these days. He says, “TotalFX provides the most bang for your buck in terms of overall improvement in skin tone and appearance. It is something that can be used in conjunction with Botox® and/or fillers for an overall more youthful appearance.” So who is the best candidate for TotalFX? “The best candidate is the person who wants to see significant results from one treatment,” says Dr. Kest. “However, they have to be willing to have some downtime to reap the reward.” Downtime can be as long as ten days. The worst candidates are those with unrealistic expectations, sun worshippers who won’t kick the habit, and people who can’t take ten days to recover.

your face is now gorgeous, but you’re still miffed about your muffin top. Just how can you achieve First Lady–fit arms? We spoke with Dr. John Shieh, M.D., about what’s trending with the ‘beauty budget’–conscious. Dr. Shieh, founder of the RejuvaYou Medical Group in LA, eradicates the “F word” every day. You know the one we’re talking about: Fat. He says that women who are seeking Michelle Obama’s toned arms, but don’t want to go into national debt, should look no further than LipoLite™ Laser LipoSculpture™. “Traditionally,” he notes, “arms are considered a difficult area to liposuction successfully due to risk of unevenness and loose skin.” LipoLite solves those challenges. LipoLite has also become the go-to treatment for the stars for stubborn bulges that won’t budge, no matter how much they diet and exercise. Guys will break up with their love handles and say goodbye to back fat. Looking for absolutely perfect abs? Uncover them with LipoLite. Here’s how it works: The laser is directed just below the skin, to melt and smooth the fat below and the skin at the same time. This causes the skin to tighten and generate new collagen. The patient is given a local anesthetic, which means they’re awake during the procedure and can stand and walk right after the surgery. The results are immediate, and the recovery is relatively quick: Within 48 hours, you should be up and doing normal activities.

T

The price tag? Dr. Shieh does not subscribe to the one-size-fits-all approach and provides a thorough no-obligation consultation to determine how extensive the treatment will be, and thus, the cost. Our research says to expect to pay in the range of $3,000 to $5,000, depending on the area and the scope of the treatment. But, for our money, if you’ve slaved at the gym, hired the best nutritionist, tried every diet, and still can’t rid yourself of those ugly fat pockets, it seems worth every dime. G

he golden question for this silver bullet? How much should one expect to pay? Dr. Kest says, “Between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on the areas being treated and how aggressively I need to treat whatever damage the patient has.”

fountain of youth—but it’s close. Dr. Kest explains, “We continue to age no matter what we do. However, this is one procedure that will dramatically slow down the aging process.” Those words alone should have you stampeding to The Kest Clinic. Dr. Kest has one practice that has made perfect.

And, despite how fabulous you will look after TotalFX, time marches on. It’s not the

I had the perfect excuse to go shopping in London. There are some good looks this season, and very grown-up: think Norma Desmond, the glamour, tall turbans, large gold jewelry, and pretty tea dresses. The clothes are jewel colors, and there’s a lot of gray (which is not good for me—makes me look like a nun). As I enter the shops, there’s not a lot of humor—except at Dior, where he mixes satin romper suits suitable for bedtime with fishnets and long coats. It’s a look I like. Topshop has amazing pieces too, and little flowery dresses that seem to come from another time. Alberta Ferretti had some pretty chiffon cocktail numbers, and Dolce & Gabbana had some A-line dresses in black wool. The best necklace I found was at Dolce, and it’s finished off with Kilt pins that you can put in any direction. I love Verdura jewelry—big, chunky bracelets. Darting back to my flat, I was called by Maxfield in Los Angeles. They’ve put aside wedge boots from Balenciaga and some long socks from Dior. I can't wait to get back and enjoy raiding CHANEL and my favorite haunts. I have had to disappear this summer, as I’ve sold my house and am about to create a new mystery.

The early bird gets the worm! —George Blodwell It’s exhilarating to see all the new duds arriving for fall. This season I encourage all of you to get out and bag something different, new, and fresh. The big news for the guys is double-breasted suits or jackets. Most of our favorite designers have manifested their own versions in a wide variety of fabrics and cuts. The doublebreasted jacket of the past had a tendency to be cumbersome, especially if one were to leave it unbuttoned. The new versions are better. The lines are narrower, the jackets shorter, and the overall look is snugger, sexier, and more supple. Like any good jacket, the look works with jeans and a T-shirt. Or, you can wear it with a nice white shirt with a pocket square or tie and feel elegant and ready for any occasion. BAD ROMANCE —by ALMIE ROSE

ecently, I wrote a blog post (apocalypstick.com) about romance that sparked a lot of attention. It centered around this sad truth: women yearn for romantic men; men don’t want romantic women. It’s just not a trait that’s on their list for a potential girlfriend. Though my point is nothing new, I find it interesting that when it comes to romance, men get a lot more leeway than women.

If a guy surprises a girl outside of her window with a boom box blasting, everyone cries and falls in love. If I were to show up at Lloyd Dobbler’s house, stereo in hand, he would feel awkward and ask me why I was playing Phil Collins at three in the morning and I would scream, “IT’S PETER GABRIEL!” and he would tell me to go home. OK, Lloyd Dobbler wouldn’t do this, because he knows the difference between Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. Also, Lloyd Dobbler doesn’t actually exist. But my point, and I don’t think it’s a groundbreaking one, is that when women try to be romantic it’s seen as desperate, strange and borderline creepy. Imagine every romantic comedy. Now flip the genders of the two leads. At some point wouldn’t the audience think of the lead women, “Oh my God, girl, let him go. People think you’re a stalker. He’s just not that into you.” Referencing my piece, Hortense over at Jezebel (jezebel. com), brought up Sleepless in Seattle. Meg Ryan chases Tom Hanks all over the country based on hearing him call in to a radio show. When they’d never even met (and you thought it was weird when people met on Craigslist?) If you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy, you’ll have no problem riding along with Ryan and tearing up when she and Hanks meet at the top of the Empire State Building. But if you’re not in the mood, then the whole thing takes on a darker undertone. It essentially becomes a film about stalking, as movies usually do when a woman is the aggressor. The map goes something like this: woman makes the first move ➞ woman shows

110 GENLUX FALL / 2010

strong interest ➞ woman persists ➞ woman is a stalker. For men it goes a little more like this: man makes the first move (he must really like you!) ➞ man shows strong interest (he’s so into you!) ➞ man persists (how romantic!) ➞ man wins you over (of course he does!) Now I’m not saying that men can’t be stalkers. Nor am I saying that women should be wary of asking a man out. All I am saying is that more often than not, women who make romantic gestures are given descriptions like “weird” “clingy” and “stalker.” However, it isn’t considered stalking when the lead male character in a romantic movie dashes off to the church with hopes of destroying the wedding between the love of his life and some doofus. Nope, his public proclamation of undying love—the most common romantic cliché in movie history—makes women swoon (and men feel inadequate) in theaters across the nation. This scene plays into the idea that all women (OK, maybe not all women, but most) want their significant other to impulsively and publicly declare their love for them—preferably in front of their family and friends, or at least in front of strangers with a guitar in hand, à la Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer. When he surprised Drew Barrymore on the airplane, crooning out his love for her in song, she brushed her tears away and leaped into his arms as passengers applauded all around them. Funny enough, when I’m overcome with emotion and decide to spontaneously break into song as a profession of my love, I’m asked to leave Trader Joe’s.

caught the travel bug early. I went with my high school drama teacher and a dozen teens—some pretty, some pimply—across the Atlantic. Our destinations: Paris and London. I rode the metro and the tube, visited Jim Morrison’s grave, and saw DaVinci’s masterpiece smile. I strolled the Tuileries and sipped champagne on the Champs-Élysées. I was 13. Simply changing my coordinates can set me straight when things are a little wonky. In need of just that, I was invited to the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana—an über-exclusive, private club community in the heart of the northern Rockies. Traditional access requires the purchase of property and a membership. Members include folks like Bill Gates. And media moguls, pop stars and power politicians. I was in! Time to channel my inner Sacagawea. I arrived at the Yellowstone Club just in time to see the sun set against the Spanish Peaks. After a decadent sleep, I stepped onto the porch of my cabin, and into view of Lone Peak, the snow-capped cathedral in the distance. I sucked in the sweet mountain air. Montana is magic. Mike Meldman of Discovery Land Properties, an owner of the YC, agrees, “It is truly a one-of-a-kind place. With amazing private skiing in the winter, championship-caliber golf in the summer, and an abundance of recreational opportunities, the members and their families enjoy outdoor activities 12 months a year.” Discovery owns the most exclusive properties in the world, and he says this one’s on top. Consisting of 22 square miles of high alpine forest, with its own secret service, fire department and 24-hour concierge, the YC is 100% turn-key. It boasts more world-class amenities than Montana has moose. From the elite-athlete training programs, kids’ recreational center and daycare, to the award-winning private ski & golf, and customized itineraries—it’s the ultimate in destination ownership. And according to Bill Collins, the vice

president of sales, the YC goal is to “maximize fun, relaxation and family time.” So maximize I did. I power-ate on the property: in the Lakeside Lobby for breakfast, Big Horn Bar for lunch, and the Warren Miller Lodge for dinner—sophisticated cuisine with lots of local options. Properly fueled, I rock-climbed, hiked, and fly-fished. My guide was Joe Sharpe, the coolest man on the planet. He survived being bombed in Vietnam and went on to fly airplanes, instruct, and eventually retired to do what he loves. And teach others how. I tangled my line twice, made a few clean casts, and before long, Joe landed two cutthroat trout. Muddy, sweaty, and sunburned, I was on to my next activity: the Challenge Course. I greeted the oversized jungle gym with terror and awe. I felt like I was on an episode of “Fear Factor.” But I wasn’t wearing a sports bra or lipstick, and Joe Rogan was nowhere to be found. Shaking like a Chihuahua, I climbed the firecracker vine, walked the tightrope, and jumped off the ‘leap of faith.’ With a tremendous sense of accomplishment, I had done it. Fear was not a factor for me! My sojourn at a close, I left the Yellowstone Club with a bittersweet smile on my face and a splinter in my hand. I had met challenges and explored the great outdoors. The only thing I didn’t experience was the “private powder” made famous by the club and its very own Pioneer Mountain, 2,200 acres of terrain exclusive to residents. No tickets, no lines—just you, the snow and the Montana sky. Swoosh you later, Mr. Gates. See you on the slopes. Here, she offers up some jetsetting travel secrets like stuffing YOUR Hermès Kelly handbag inside YOUR Birkin bag to cover Photo by Spiros Poros all occasions. We should all be so charmed.

What projects are you working on?

I’m working on my husband’s film project and cohosting the opening of the LACMA Resnick Pavilion. If you could take only one person on vacation, who would it be?

Besides my husband, I would take my daughter, Asia Chow.

What’s your favorite place to escape to?

Venice, Italy—the perfect getaway, with its romantic atmosphere and sophisticated style, and the delicious fresh and authentic cuisine. What do you pack?

When I go to Venice I take a few Lanvin silk dresses. They’re light and don’t take up much room. I also pack my silver art deco jewelry by Jean Dunand. Three items you couldn’t leave behind?

My Vivienne Westwood bustier top. You never know if you’ll have to attend a more formal event, and this top exudes femininity and glamour. I’d also take my YSL caftan and my emerald ring. How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you?

This is a challenge for many women when they travel, but for me it’s about accessories and shoes. They complete the outfit and can transform a piece of clothing from daytime to nighttime.

Alexander McQueen F/W 2010 Collection

What shoes do you pack?

Definitely my Hermès “H” sandals. Hermès makes the most beautiful sandals in a variety of colors. I also bring black YSL pumps. They can dress up any outfit. What handbags do you travel with?

gENLUXshopWHAT A GIRL WANTS

The brown and white stripes of famous Fifth Avenue retailer Henri Bendel have been drawing LA’s ‘Bendel girls’ to the Beverly Center. —Shannon L. Bowen

A

lways one step ahead, famed American retailer Henri Bendel was responsible for a number of firsts in the fashion industry: He was the first in his business to host a fashion show in New York, the first to host a semi-annual sale, the first to offer in-store cosmetic makeovers, and even the first to “brand” himself, which he did by trademarking his unmistakable brown-and-white striped shopping bag. He even introduced Coco Chanel to the American market. From Henri Bendel’s Fine Fragrance Collection, Rose La Perla & Oud Eau de Tulasi bikini Parfum, $65 with braid detail, $460

King Tut bangle set, $128; gold stud bangle set, $148; Cool Cat gold bracelet, $58

Travel Candle in Fig, $15

So it’s only fitting that, last year, the Bendel brand finally opened up shop in Los Angeles, perennial home of the next big thing. “The reaction to the shop has been fantastic,” says Henri Bendel CEO and president Ed Bucciarelli, who notes that both Kristen Bell and Michelle Trachtenberg have visited the store in recent months. “From our research, we knew that the LA customer was already shopping at our flagship location on Fifth Avenue, so we have a built-in customer base,” he adds. “Everybody loves a little bit of New York glamour— even in LA.” Just like at its famed Fifth Avenue shop, at the LA boutique you’ll find Bendel’s ever-popular Brown & White striped handbag and cosmetic bags, as well as accessories with a more SoCal feel, like the Debutante Assymetric clutch. Available in shades like wine and petal pink, it’s proving especially popular. “The LA Bendel girl loves color, so it’s no surprise that our more colorful products are resonating with her,” Bucciarelli says.

Tweed Suit pearl necklace, $298 The Carnaby Stripe scarf, $125

But Bendel excels at far more than bags. Its enamel bangles are pure arm candy, and its Home Fragrance Collection, which includes long-burning candles in scents like Lavender Leaves and Firewood, has earned such celeb fans as Ellen DeGeneres and Uma Thurman. What’s more, this fall the company is launching a sterling-silver jewelry gift collection, a small leather goods line, and the Henri Bendel Cocktail Hat Collection. “We collaborated with New York milliner Ellen Christine, and the hats are uniquely beautiful and perfect for Fall 2010, a very polished and ladylike season,” Bucciarelli says. “I know that Mr. Bendel, who was a trained milliner, would be thrilled with the results.” And the brand’s focus on accessories has paid off: This November, the Accessories Council, a not-for-profit national advocacy organization, will honor Henri Bendel as Accessories Retailer of the Year at a gala at New York’s famed Cipriani restaurant. Bendel has a number of designer collaborations in the works as well. Among the names the company will be teaming up with are Chan Luu, beloved for her scarves and jewelry, famed handbag label Roberta di Camerino, and British nail color experts Nails Inc. London. The results, says Bucciarelli, will be “limited-edition” and “Bendel-inspired.” With so many fab finds in the pipeline, one has to ask if the Beverly Center shop is the first of many Bendel storefronts in Los Angeles. “Perhaps,” says Bucciarelli. “There are a lot of Bendel girls in LA.”

Beauty

gENLUXshop The Green Genlux We’ve finally reached a point where green products can be just as glamorous as conventional ones. Organic connoisseurs can now demand that everything from moth repellent to perfume to a blow-dryer be eco-friendly. These days no one has to settle when purchasing organic products, since the options are endless.—Susan Campos

He’s tamed the manes of everyone from Heidi Klum to Naomi Watts. Now Fredrick Fekkai is going Au Naturel. Or at least that’s the name of his new line. Fekkai Au Naturel is a plant-based collection of products that are free of sulfates, dyes and synthetic fragrances. For more information visit fekkai.com.

Finally, a chic moth repellent that will turn off insects but not humans. Leave it to a Woolworth to find a pleasing way to protect our wool sweaters and all our clothes! Priscilla Woolworth is a fourth-generation descendent of the famed stores that bear her name. She wanted to find an eco-friendly alternative to the harsh odor of those passé white moth balls. When a woman smells her organic sachets mixed with a combination of efficacious herbs, she smiles; when a moth does, it flees the closet in horror. Pack of three sachets for $25. priscillawoolworth.com

Green Machine To blow out that hair, check out the Barbar Eco 8000 blow-dryer. It’s an effortless way to be eco-friendly. The green blow-dryer is in the hands of some of Hollywood’s biggest hair stylists. It has a ceramic heating element versus a coil one. Translation: It saves electricity and is designed to last longer. $150, BarbarHairTools.com

Libby Patterson is an organic couture perfumer who mixes up special scents with more than 300 different raw botanicals. Her crowd-pleasing Slimming Serum ($55) is made up of fennel, lime, orange, lemon, and other special ingredients. However, her personalized perfume can run $2500 for a one-ounce bottle (which can then be reordered for $750). Libby Patterson Organics Couture Parfums & Botanicals, 510-290-4028

My must-have products:

The latest organic craze to hit Hollywood is called the Paleta diet, and everyone from Robert Downey Jr. to Molly Sims has been on it in an effort to stay in great shape. Organic food delivered to your doorstep. The price for this privilege is $295 a week (which includes three meals and two snacks). Not only are the ingredients organic, but the packaging is eco-friendly, too! Paleta Diet, 310-673-7820, paleta.com

The motto for this organic eye cream is, “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” That’s exactly what guides Dr. Alkaitis, the highly regarded research scientist and chemist behind the line that bears his name. Beloved by makeup artists and models such as Gisele Bundchen, Angela Lindvall, and Karolina Kurkova, this über-green line is all the rage on the runways. Products are created exclusively from organically grown or wild-crafted plants and unpolluted sea life. alkaitis.com Nude Replenishing Night Oil softens fine lines and gives the skin the perfect Hollywood glow. A powerful antioxidant that protects against the signs of aging. And despite being organic, it has a long shelf life. $185, Barneys New York, Beverly Hills, 310-276-4400

HAIR APPARENT Earth-friendly haircare options have come a long way. With the new generation of green products and treatments, you can get right with the planet without sacrificing style. —Dawn Shand Johnson PROS AND CONS OF ECO-FRIENDLY HAIR COLOR: THE CONS THE PROS ➣ If used properly, eco-friendly hair color lasts as long as traditional hair color. When covering gray, the key is to apply to clean, dry hair and process under heat for approximately five to ten minutes, and then for 25 minutes without heat. (Duration varies with hair type, of course.) Plus, eco-friendly color gradually fades over four weeks, which means you won’t end up with the dramatic demarcation line created by traditional color treatments. ➣ Switching to eco-friendly color is a healthy choice for you and others! Traditional color contains ingredients linked to asthma and cancer. Depending on how often you color your hair, exposure to these chemicals can be limited, but when those chemicals are rinsed out, they find their way into our waterways and can have major environmental consequences. And don’t forget about your colorist. While they listen intently, absorbing all your hair woes, they’re also breathing in all those nasty chemicals. ➣ Choosing eco-friendly color makes you part of the solution. We’re bombarded with stories of environmental devastation; it’s easy to feel down. Eco-friendly products can help you can maintain beautiful hair—and help improve the environment.

earth-friendly haircare 1. Instead of washing your hair every day—an eight-minute shower can use up to 18 gallons of water—use baby powder to absorb excess oil. 2. Blow-drying every day dries out the hair—plus, most blowdryers aren’t energy-efficient. Instead, go natural and use a colorful scarf or headband to add style. 3. For an amazing at-home deep-conditioning treatment, mix a mashed avocado, an egg yolk, and two tablespoons of honey or olive oil. Apply to hair, let sit for 15 minutes, and rinse with warm water. 4. Attention all hair-extension addicts! There are harmful plastic polymers in most extension adhesives and keratin bonds; plus, alcohol and acetone are used to remove the bonds. Fortunately, Hair & Compounds has created a keratin bond and adhesive that uses a vegetable- and fruit-based oil to remove the bonds. Say goodbye to hair breakage. 5. To achieve a full-body hairstyle without heat (blow-dryers or curling irons), toweldry hair and comb through L’Oreal Elasticite curl-setting creme-gel, roll hair onto rollers (cans or paper-towel rolls work too!), and secure with bobby pins. Let hair air-dry, remove rollers, and pull your fingers through hair to set in place. —Kennedy, stylist at Warren-Tricomi Los Angeles / Luxe Beauty Team, luxebeautyteam.com

➣ You cannot achieve bleached-blonde hair with eco-friendly hair color. The chemicals in bleach are very toxic; that’s what creates the palest of pale blondes. There are less-toxic products available that achieve beautiful natural-blonde highlights. ➣ Green-washing. A lot of products claim to be environmentally friendly just because they use a few organic ingredients. Read the ingredient lists, and if your stylist is using eco-friendly products, ask them what makes them green. Be wary of fancy labels that appeal to your conscience; just because a product says it’s eco-friendly doesn’t mean it is. A great reference for products is the Skin Deep report from EWG (Environmental Working Group). —Danielle Kelly, ecocolorist, Roman Salon, 818 N. La Cienega Blvd, West Hollywood, 310-854-1030

ECO COLOR TRENDS FOR FALL: “I think people want to embrace eco-friendly hair color, but they’re concerned about keeping the hair light. Redken has a new hair lightener with beeswax and without ammonia; it’s called Icing. You can highlight your hair and the beeswax will help protect both the hair and color. Kemon’s “Yo” is a yogurt-based hair color that has no ammonia or peroxide and comes in all shades. I think it’s going to become more popular as well.

Davines Alchemic shampoo, $24; conditioner, $28, “Color protection and treatments are also big for fall. Davines has great products derived available in all colors. from natural ingredients. My favorites are their shampoos and conditioners for color-treated davines.com hair. They’re great for not washing out color, and they actually add natural pigment to the hair. Jenny Packham’s gorgeous ready-to-wear looks are the definition of glamour. It’s no wonder she’s a favorite of red-carpet darlings like Sarah Jessica Parker, Keira Knightley, Beyoncé, and Miley Cyrus, who earned raves for donning a champagne-hued floor-length Packham frock for the 2010 Oscar ceremony. Of course, Packham is also adored for her bridal collections—who can forget the bejeweled gown Elizabeth Hurley chose for her wedding to Arun Nayar?—which have earned her such coveted honors as International Couture Bridal Designer of the Year and British Bridal Dress Designer of the Year. ¶ Based in London and a graduate of famed Central Saint Martins, Packham has begun collecting awards Stateside too, having recently been named Hollywood Style Designer of the Year. And this September, she’ll show at New York Fashion Week for the first time. ¶ Her arrival in New York is just the latest in a string of successes for the designer, whose retail empire is expanding at a rapid clip. “Having opened in London and Paris, I am hoping for a store in the U.S. at some point in the not so distant future,” she says. “The U.S. has been very supportive of me and my designs, and I love being here.” —Shannon L. ON AND OFF THE PLANE:

Red 100% silk chiffon dress with bow detail at shoulders, $5800

What’s in your carry-on? Cashmere socks, water, Une Rose perfume by Frederic Malle, iPod. What’s on your iPod? I’m having a “Twin Peaks” revival, and am loving Julee Cruise at the moment. Reading material? My current read, which is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. What are your packing essentials for LA? Always a fabulous pair of Louboutins for those last-minute parties. My fantastic eyelashes by Flutter. They brighten up your eyes for the entire trip, so you look more jetset than jetlagged! They last weeks, and I always get them done before I go. My swimsuit for the rooftop pool at the Thompson Beverly Hills in case I can catch an hour of sunshine before flying home.

self portait

What packing essentials do you recommend for friends visiting LA? Pack colour! LA is usually warm and bathing in sunshine, so experiment a little more. What’s the first thing you do to unwind? Either have a massage or burn a candle whilst taking a bath. Cowshed travel candles are great. How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? I tend to spend very little time in my room when I travel, as we are constantly meeting people, working, or going to parties. When I do get back to the room, I like to take an Americanstyle “power shower”! Red-eye or morning flight? Normally it has to be the red-eye, so you can make the most of your time and make meetings that day. I always pack my eye creams to try and rejuvenate.

Where do you...

Stay in LA? Usually the Thompson Beverly Hills. Have drinks? The pool bar at the Thompson. They do fantastic cocktails. I also love having a glass of wine at the bar in Cecconi’s— you feel like you’re stepping back to 1930s Hollywood. It’s the perfect mix of contemporary elegance and glamour. LA FAVORITES

Shops: Anything vintage, like Sielian’s and The Way We Wore. I also love Maxfield.

138 GENLUX FALL / 2010

Restaurants: Cecconi’s, The Ivy, and Koi. Neighborhood: I stay in Beverly Hills, but often go to West Hollywood when I’m in LA. Melrose Place is great for its boutiques. The farmers market in Santa Monica is constantly recommended to me. I like to live healthfully and buy local produce, so it’s a must-see for the next time I am there. Time of year: Anytime. However, I’m usually there in April and October.

How do you look refreshed after a long flight? I drink lots of water during the flight and eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. I often pack my own fresh food for the flight, as plane food is pretty bad and full of rubbish. What do you wish LA had more of that Red 100% silk you have in London? Walking! chiffon dress What do you wish London had that with all-over LA has? Sunshine and glamour. embellishment, $3400
