GenLUX And the award goes to…

I

love awards season, but I’m also glad it’s finally behind us. What a whirlwind it’s been! It started in early January with the Golden Globes. Soon after, the Screen Actors Guild Awards were celebrated, followed by the BAFTAs, the Costume Designer Guild Awards, and many more in between. The Costume Designer Guild Awards were fun and exciting. That night, Julie Weiss, the very witty and extremely-blessed-with-talent costume designer, was honored. Her acceptance speech was so inspiring. One thing she said that struck a chord with me was, “You can’t budget the imagination.” I totally agree. Then came the most important night of all, the Academy Awards. I attended a few fantastic Oscar parties, where, of course, I got to meet and mingle with a lot of interesting and talented industry people. In early February, I was delighted to attend the opening of Harry Winston’s second retail salon in Las Vegas,

20 GENLUX SPRING I / 2011

located in the prestigious Crystals at CityCenter. The 1900-square-foot salon houses some of the most dazzling diamonds and rarest gemstones. The opening also marked a new design partnership for the brand, developed by award-winning designer Bill Sofield and Studio Sofield, Inc. I present you with our Hollywood Issue. We have included many up-and-coming stars like Alexandra Daddario, Jessica Lowndes, and our beautiful cover model, Camilla Belle. One shoot I particularly enjoyed was our Star Watch photo shoot by Bonnie Holland, for which five beautiful, talented and very different young actresses were transformed into Hollywood icons. Check out Sophia Bush, Amanda Righetti, Jurnee Smollett, Krysten Ritter and Pippa Black’s transformations and see if you can guess who they’re paying homage to. Bisous à tous!

We go behind the scenes to reveal how our creative team achieved Camilla Belle’s cover look! EYES: “I decided to

give Camilla’s eyes all of the focus. A strong, structured extended eyeliner—very classic Hollywood. Her famous brows were given just a touch of extra definition and crispness.”

SKIN: “Though she was tan from a recent trip to the tropics, I used a pale, fleshy foundation on her face and body to give her a pale, statuesque look.” Lip: “For lips

I went with a mauve/pink. Nothing too sweet, yet nothing too deep that would detract from her playedup eyes.

essica Lowndes is an actress (a regular on the hit show 90210); a singer (she opened for Robin Thicke last year in Vegas and performed ‘The Christmas Song’ at LA Live with Seal, Stevie Wonder, and Willow Smith); a musician (she plays the piano and her songs have been featured on Moonlight on CBS and on 90210); a writer and a painter. Her future creative goals are to concoct her own fragrance, create her own fashion line, and one day perform on Broadway. Whew!

f Oscar Wilde were alive today, he would have made Jessica Lowndes his poster child. Wilde endorsed the philosophy of ‘anti-mimesis’—basically, that ‘life imitates art far more than art imitates life.’ In Jessica’s case, she embodies the notion that we subconsciously seek forms of expression for fulfillment in our lives. And art is the abundant and beautiful energy through which to realize that desire. Hold on, it actually gets more complicated. She offers to meet for coffee at Le Conversation—a fitting name for a restaurant to have an interview. It’s a quaint, sunny little place on Doheny, bordering Beverly Hills and WeHo. It’s half restaurant and half bakery. This is Jessica’s hangout. What’s ironic is, it’s so noisy with les conversations, it’s kind of hard to actually have one. Jessica’s wearing a black-and-white striped Ann Taylor top, a Phillip Lim jacket, and a cute hat. “My style is very much classic chic and very vintage-inspired, just like my character, Adrianna on 90210” (art imitating life or life imitating art imitating life?). Jessica appears too beautiful, and, well, too normal to be a true artist. There’s not a quirky bone in her body. That is, until she talks about her obsession with cake. “I want to smell like a bakery, that’s my goal. Because everybody loves cake. The smell of it reminds me of my birthday when I was a kid. It’s nostalgic. I just love cupcakes and icing. My whole apartment when you walk in smells like butter-cream frosting or waffle-cone or shortbread. It’s in my candles, bath lotions, perfumes—all of it. I like scents like crème brûlée, vanilla, almond, coconut, that kinda stuff.” Um, forget what I said about not being quirky. She mentions a laundry list of favorite products true to her sugary obsession—enough to make your jaw tingle. “I love Laura Mercier Almond Coconut milk, their body butter. I love their Crème Brûlée perfume…and Aquolina Pink Sugar, the cotton-candy perfume.” She opens her handbag and pulls out a tube. “Isn’t this amazing? It’s lip balm and hand lotion in one. Smells like cake! It’s called Votre-Vous hand lotion.”

essica Lowndes was born 22 years ago in Canada to a mom who doubled as her piano teacher and a dad who set the teen world record for running across Canada in only 81 days. Not surprisingly, this creative couple had little resistance when their daughter came to them with the idea of dropping out of high school to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. “I was expecting a bit of a fight, but my mom was like, ‘OK, Dan, can you go email her principal?’ And it was just like that; my dad was like, ‘Yup, sure.’ My parents are amazing.” Jessica went on to finish high school in three months through Canada’s Surrey Connect online program. Getting back to cake, I find out why birthdays are so indelibly locked in her psyche. “My mom said if I got an 85 or higher on my piano test, I could have my first girl-boy birthday party. My dream was to invite Jonathan—who I had a crush on since the second grade—to my 13th birthday party. So I glued a picture of him to my piano to motivate me. I got an 88 and had the party. He was my first kiss. We dated for only six days.” Last year, Jessica’s 90210 character had to deal with drugs, an HIV scare, a pregnancy, and a baby. “That’s when she was only fifteen; it was a very rough year. The reaction from the fans has been incredible, because Adrianna has gone through so many different things that a lot of people can relate to and identify with. Some look up to my character to help them get through their own situation.” Now there’s another anti-mimetical occurence in Jessica’s life. “I pitched the idea of my character getting a record deal. I just threw it out there, and yeah, after like a cheating storyline and a lesbian storyline, they incorporated the music, and then this season it’s been all music. Adrianna dropped out of school to pursue her music career, so every week I get to sing on the show. And now I’m working on an album in real life, so it’s all kind of amazing.” So, I guess if you’re lucky like Jessica Lowndes, you can have your cake and anti-mimetical life, too. G

I

t’s 9 a.m. and our photo shoot at Smashbox Studios starts to percolate. The creative team scampers around, amply jacked on caffeine. Every member is a master at his or her craft—like an all-star rock band that’s come together for one hall-of-fame performance. On camera: Famed photographer Moshe Brakha and his son, Eddie, collectively known as Brakhax2; On fashion styling: Jessica Paster—the grande dame of celebrity stylists; Behind the blow-dr yer: Superstylist Robert Steinken; On makeup: the brilliant Brett Freedman; and, rounding out the group, On nail file: Manicure virtuoso Paul LaMarche.

T

he featured guest star is Camilla Belle, the gorgeous actress with the flawless fashion sense, knockout figure, and demure demeanor. She arrives with her mom, Cristina, and is wearing Hudson jeans, a Kate Spade jacket, and black Burberry boots. She greets the rest of the band and quickly dives into hair and makeup. Two, maybe three hours go by and Camilla floats out in a shimmering Roberto Cavalli stunner that clings to her body like Paster has just airbrushed it on. “Armani, Gucci, all the Italian designers fit me pretty well,” Camilla says. Not surprisingly, the fashion marketing machine has been courting her for years. At 17, she did the Miu Miu ad campaign along with Kim Basinger. Two years later she shot the Vera Wang Princess perfume campaign with her favorite photographer, Bruce Weber. She’s also shot with top photographers like Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz, and has been on everyone’s ‘best-dressed’ lists. We need music on the set, so Camilla agrees to let us hook up her iPod. On it are Brazilian Bossa Nova greats Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso (now playing on my Pandora). They, along with an international mix of African jazz, Frank Sinatra, Mexican La Ranchera, Broadway show tunes, and more, are the reasons why her friends cleverly nicknamed her iPod “NatGeo.” Born on October 2, 1986, in Los Angeles, Camilla Belle hasn’t always been the fashion plate you see before you. “I was kind of a tomboy,” she recalls with a smile. “I could care less about fashion; I wore a uniform my whole life to school, so that was the least of my worries. My mom wanted to put me in a dress—and bows. I hated that so much! She was always like, ‘Come on, come on, put on a dress,’ but I really didn’t want to. It frustrated her because she was a fashion designer with her own successful line in Brazil.” Now, it’s Camilla who frequently raises the bar on the red carpet. “I’m young enough where I can take risks. I can wear something that you would never expect. I don’t care if people don’t like it, because I like it. That’s the

attitude I think you have to have. For instance, I like Tilda Swinton—she’s so cool and confident. You can tell she likes what she’s wearing. Helena Bonham Carter—maybe I wouldn’t necessarily wear two differentcolor shoes to the Golden Globes, but that’s really neat!” A few favorite red-carpet moments pop into her mind: “One was the first year that I went to the Met Gala—when I was 20 or 21. Cate Blanchett was hosting, and it was so chic and so beautiful. I was wearing Jean Paul Gaultier and it was just the most incredible dress. I felt like a princess. It was such an amazing moment walking up those stairs. I attended the following year in an Armani Privé gown. And then last year, I went with designer Jason Wu and wore one of his dresses.” Another favorite fashion moment was at the premiere of Prada to Nada—the new Angel Gracia film that she stars in. She rocked a gorgeous, Jason Wu black tuxedo suit over a beige, midriff-baring, ruffled silk bra top that showed off her sexy, golden, washboard abs. There’s one thing that Camilla’s lithe, fashionable size-2 figure doesn’t jibe with—her life as a foodie. “I love to cook and I go to the Farmer’s Market every Sunday. My favorite restaurant is Osteria Mozza. I could eat there every week! I’m always good for a great steak. I love to watch ‘Barefoot Contessa’ and Giada de Laurentiis, and I have every one of their cookbooks.” The girl’s also got a bit of a reputation as a fierce baker. “My friends always ask for my lemon curd tart. They all say it’s dangerously good.” Back at the shoot, it’s now 6:30, and some Lakers tix are waiting for Camilla and Cristina at Staples Center. The only problem is, tip-off is in 30 minutes, but we’re about an hour away from wrapping our shoot. The Brakha boys beg for one more closeup. Discussions ping-pong about whether the shot is really necessary. It’s decided that it will be the shot that completes the story. Camilla and Cristina convene. “Okay, I’ll stay to get the shot,” Camilla agrees. Just like when the lead singer has decided not to desert the band and go out on her own, we all cheer. G

A

lexandra Daddario arrives at our interview dressed in a chic fitted grey Hugo Boss wool coat over a pair of 7 Jeans. On her size 9s are Ralph Lauren sneakers. She slips into the booth at the Café Rodeo and plops her classic black quilted CHANEL bag down beside her.

H

er long, thick, dark brown mane frames her brilliant, piercing blue eyes that, even at 24, still sparkle with teenage innocence and naiveté. Alex, as she introduces herself, is of Italian and Czechoslovakian descent. She speaks humbly and almost apologetically about her Upper East Side upbringing where she was educated at the prestigious Brearley School, and her summers were spent at the family home in the Hamptons. Her parents, both attorneys, met while studying at Georgetown. “They taught me to be very verbal, although it was hard to ever win an argument at home,” she recalls jokingly. Alex lacks the edginess of a New Yorker, but instead possesses the vibe of a hip, relaxed Southern Cal girl. One of the harsh LA realities Alex encountered was our driving prerequisite. “I failed my driving test three times,” she confesses. “So I went to Melrose Driving School and actually failed again before finally getting my license. I don’t give up easily.” Alex recalls how this never-say-die mantra saved her career after a devastating first screen test. “I had such stage fright! I was 17 and the studio flew me in from New York and put me up in a nice hotel. I imagined the situation being a thousand times worse than it actually was. I saw myself on stage in front of a bleacher filled with about 50 executives. In reality there were probably only seven people there, but I went up to read and was so petrified I couldn’t even speak. I froze. The experience forced me to deal with my stage fright. It was a good lesson.” Lesson learned. In 2009, Alex scored the prized role of Annabeth Chase in director Chris Columbus’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: the Lightning Thief. The film, based on the hugely successful book of the same name, has grossed over $225 million worldwide. Her next feature, slated for release this month, is Hall Pass, a hilarious comedy in which two women grant their

husbands a one-time “hall pass” to cheat. Alex’s character tries to seduce Owen Wilson to use his up.

S

o just how is she dealing with her newfound fame? “No, I don’t have fans running after me,” she says with mock sadness. “The weekend the movie came out, I would walk around just staring at children, hoping they’d recognize me. I was like, ‘Don’t you recognize me? Look who’s standing right here!’” She takes her Ray-Ban sunglasses out of the handbag they share with a BlackBerry, a few iPods, some Chapstick, CHANEL moisturizer, some sides (script segments), and a book, Steve Martin’s An Object of Beauty. “I’m a big reader but I have trouble reading on screens. Maybe I’m an old soul, but I love paper.” When it comes to fashion, Alex gravitates toward Alexander Wang and CHANEL. “I have simple, classic style. I wore a simple Mason black dress with these detailed cutouts to the MTV Movie Awards and a black and white BCBG dress to the premiere of Percy Jackson.” The girl is getting her share of attention. V Magazine just named her one of the “Faces to Watch.” Sexy photos of Alex will appear in Esquire. “I was wearing a black bra and underwear and one sock. I have no problem being sexy as long as it’s not classless. I’m big in the chest so the dresses don’t usually fit me quite right. I’m a size 2 or a 4 everywhere else.” Not surprisingly, when I ask her to name her heroes, she brings up Steve Martin again. “I’m a huge fan of Steve Martin. I think if I ever met him I’d fall over. I love him. The Jerk is amazing. L.A. Story is great. He’s just a genius. I love his writing. His autobiography, Born Standing Up, is really incredible. He’s just got that special way about him. He’s my ideal man. He has a great perspective on life and relationships. He also has a great sense of humor. One of my favorite quotes of his is ‘All of life’s riddles are answered in the movies.’ ” G

He’s published two beautiful books (with a third in the works), and thousands of his images are permanently archived at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Murray started out like a lot of kids during the Great Depression—holding down a part-time job after high school. Sure, he was fascinated with photography, but couldn’t picture himself earning a living at it. So he spent his afternoons packing and delivering millinery in New York’s bustling garment district. One day he was offered an apprenticeship at a big-time photographic agency. He asked his prospective boss, “Why would I spend all those hours mixing chemicals, developing prints, cleaning tanks, and struggling to meet deadlines for less money than I make delivering hats?” The reply came loud and clear: “Because you’ll lear n!” And learn he did.

Most memorable woman you ever photographed?

How do you compare Old Hollywood with the Hollywood of today?

Eleanor Roosevelt. It was my first professional assignment; I was 16 years old and photographing the wife of the president of the United States! It was at a show opening in Newark, New Jersey—I was piled into a limousine with her and labor leader Phillip Murray, and spent the entire afternoon and evening with them.

There’s no comparison. The studio star system is gone. Huge corporations have replaced the people who made the motion-picture business—legendary names like Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, the Warner Brothers, Daryl Zanuck and Harry Cohen. Now the suits run the business.

Most glamorous?

An incredibly difficult choice, but I would have to say Sophia Loren, considering her talent, beauty, and the body of work she has compiled. Kirk Douglas and Elizabeth Taylor pho-

tographed by Murray Garrett in 1944

Most challenging aspect of your work?

One you wish you’d photographed?

Getting the best photographs I could without invading people’s privacy. Most of my subjects knew me and how I worked, which was the reason I did so many personal shoots for Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Red Skelton, Loretta Young and others.

Greta Garbo. She left Hollywood for New York at about the time I left New York to follow my career in Hollywood.

Special challenges shooting in black and white?

What makes your images unique?

I worked hard at getting shots that weren’t posed. I made it a point to get casual shots that would make the reader feel like an insider. Which of today’s stars would you love to photograph?

Halle Berry. I think she is one of the most beautiful women in the world, as well as an enormous talent.

Most difficult woman to photograph?

One of the most talented women in the world, Barbra Streisand. I photographed her when she came out west to do a Bob Hope TV special. I was Bob Hope’s personal photographer for 25 years, and had never before experienced a guest star who was not at ease being photographed by me.

Black and white wasn’t a challenge. When I started, that’s all there was. When color first came in, it could take as long as thirty days to get something in print because of the technology needed to reproduce full color in newspapers and magazines. Thoughts about today’s paparazzi?

I have a standard line about the paparazzi. When I first heard the term, I thought it was a new form of pasta. For the most part, the press and the stars had a wonderful working relationship. We needed each other; the studios and their stars needed publicity, and the press had a job to do. We simply had to cover the Hollywood scene for the people who read the newspapers and magazines.

“Phyllis Diller, once you got to know her, was two entirely different people. Yes, she was the raucous, screaming, mad comedienne. But I also saw her other side: a loyal friend and a deeply caring, intelligent person. One of the greatest compliments I ever received came during a visit to her home in Brentwood. She told me that of all the thousands of photographs taken of her, the one you’re looking at was by far her favorite. I gulped hard and said ‘Thank you.’”

“One day Elizabeth Taylor’s press agent asked me to go to Disneyland with Ms. Taylor, her husband, Richard Burton, two of their children, Kate Burton and Liza Todd, the daughter of Mike Todd, and his brother, Ivor, who had come from Wales with his spouse. It was an incredible experience watching this famous couple go through the rigors of taking their kids to Disneyland, and realizing they were no different from yours or mine: their kids had to go potty, or each would want something different to eat or drink, or a memento to wear.”

For me, the Awards season is the most exciting time of year. I am a great lover of film and music, and I cherish every moment. This year there were so many dresses to wear! For the BAFTAs in London I wore a black lace dress with diamante collar and cuffs by the couture designer from England, Emilia Wickstead; a coat from Rick Owens; and shoes by Charlotte. It was a very patriotic event, with The King’s Speech winning so many prizes. My other favorites? I adore Gaultier with a passion. He has flare and adds panache—so if you are daring, go and explore his world. Marchesa always has something that I want to wear. I also adore the flamboyant jewelry of Lotus Arts de Vivre. CELEBRATE SPRING! —George Blodwell There are so many wonderful spring trends hitting the shops that every guy out there can partake in—yes, even you! Celebrate springtime’s renewal by treating yourself to something cool and new. I attended a fabulous soirée recently where a Sony insider took a picture of me. It was nighttime and he didn’t even use a flash. When I saw the image I was completely blown away and surprised by the great quality of the shot—the color was superb. I couldn’t wait to tell you about this find. If you have not seen these yet, check them out. You will be very impressed. Get yourself some colored socks this spring to jazz up your look. It’s a small and surprising detail that will instantly update your look. Even your kids might think Daddy is cool. If you are very bohemian and whimsical, check out the cut-out-toe shoe by Marsell. They are not for everyone, but

some will get a toeless kick out of them. Rick Owens’s exaggerated high top, on the other hand, will have many admirers, young and old, who will want to show off these very cool black and white foot fancies. Velvet is a strong trend for men and, as usual, Paul Smith has some lovely colors in his range this season. Preppy guys can feel cool and modern, as khaki and beige are very desirable right now. The Lanvin pant is cut beautifully—pair it with a great white cotton Gucci shirt, get a nice belt, put on your loafers and you’re done. If you wear cufflinks, jazz it up a bit with these Stephen Webster links. They speak for themselves. Finally, for the watch connoisseur, here are two exceptional collectibles. Wow! Enjoy, stay happy. THOSE HOLLYWOOD GUYS IN THOSE HOLLYWOOD HILLS—ALMIE ROSE

Check box es that ap ply

O AHEAD, CALL IT A GENERALIZATION, BUT THERE’S A DEFINITE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EAST COAST AND WEST COAST GUYS. YOU CAN TELL JUST BY THE WAY THEY DRESS (AND PERSONALLY, I’M THRILLED THAT WE DON’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH SNOW). MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE LOS ANGELES IS SO ENTICING TO CREATIVE TYPES THAT THEY MIGRATE HERE, BUT YET, AFTER A YEAR OR TWO, EVERYONE WINDS UP WITH SIMILAR CHARACTERISTICS.

I guarantee you that if you attend a party, any party in L.A., you will hear from at least two people about their latest screenplay or music video they are producing and/or directing. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, it’s just one of the prices you pay for living in Los Angeles, like bars closing early and dealing with traffic. Los Angeles isn’t strictly defined as the City of Los Angeles: it’s more like a state of being. You can pretty much look at a guy and tell which part of Los Angeles he lives in. Thus I present to you a handy guide for distinguishing the many different types of LA men (and yes, most of these criteria apply to women, too.) THE HOLLYWOOD GUY: This guy is usually the son of a famous producer or director. His heroes are Robert Evans and Spike Jonze. He’s a scoundrel, but he knows it, so that almost makes up for his behavior. He probably has a signature look, like RayBan sunglasses or boating shoes. He either slyly drops hints about his Hollywood elite upbringing or just puts it all out there. He’s working on a screenplay or an indie film. It’s indie because he doesn’t have major studio backing, but his dad is helping him get it out there. He loves attention and has an incredible apartment. He goes out to all the hottest spots in L.A. solely to brag about it later. Don’t be surprised if he wears sunglasses indoors. Expect him to reference David Lynch and take off for New York at a moment’s notice. THE VALLEY GUY: Totally unpretentious, unless he’s the Bret Easton Ellis Valley type. If he is, he will never tire of telling you about what a hardcore L.A. native he is. If not, he’s one of the

Ray-Bans

Tie Screenplay

Bike iPhone

nicer guys in the city. He’s probably laid back, but hard working, unless he’s one of those older, rough Valley types who waits in lines for clubs in Hollywood and comments on how attractive (or unattractive) the women in line are. Thankfully, the Pauly Shore variety of Valley guy is extinct. THE DOWNTOWN L.A. GUY: He is just so cool. He loves a quirky accessory, like a thick-rimmed pair of glasses, a jaunty hat, a tie, or a whimsical tattoo. He has a secret love of all Apple products. He throws large parties where everyone is too cool to introduce themselves to each other until someone plays 90s music, then everyone dances with just a hint of irony. He knows where all the good food trucks are. He probably has a bike, but that doesn’t mean he uses it. THE SILVERLAKE/ECHO PARK GUY: This guy is either pretending to be poor or is legitimately poor. He’s either in a band, directs music videos, is a photographer, or all three. He’s stoned for 70 to 90 percent of the day. He’s fond of ironic tee shirts. He listens to music by bands with names like Polar Bear Squad and Lunchtime. He pretends that he does not strive to be cool or care about anything. He most likely has either scruff or a full-blown beard. His girlfriend is very thin and dresses like an Urban Outfitters catalog. He smokes American Spirits and drinks either whiskey or Tecate beer. He uses either an iPhone or an old discontinued phone because he “really doesn’t care.” THE BRENTWOOD GUY: Ugh.

For some reason I’m most comfortable in all black—all the time. I’m inspired by timeless style icons like Charlotte Rampling. I like Prada, Celine, Lanvin, Dosa, and J. Crew.

Keep your guests happy by keeping their drinks full and the hors d’oeuvres passed by professional bartenders and event personnel. City, city, city! But I’d hate to live far from Runyon Canyon! What one movie would you want on a deserted island? Notorious by Alfred Hitchcock. It would be wonderful to be saved by Cary Grant! Tasty bites: The hors d’oeuvres by Divinity by Cory

A great party is only as good as the hors d’oeuvres it keeps. Genlux likes Divinity by Cory Martin for their fresh Ahi Tuna Tartare with scallions on a homemade rosemary chip with olive oil and sea salt or their Grilled Filet Mignon with bleu cheese and port. Yummy! Divinity’s recent event for Solange AzaguryPartridge on Rodeo Drive was, well, divine. Cory Martin’s tips for a successful catered event: 1. Proper planning. Figure out the kitchen setup, rentals, staff, and a menu that fits the type of party you’re having. 2. Have an executive chef who can adjust to the flow of the event—whether it’s dealing with early or late arrivals, people all coming at once, or someone asking for something “off the menu.” Divinity by Cory Martin. 323-4590742, divinitybycorymartin.com

Known as a visionary leader, Daniel has been instrumental in establishing LVMH as the numberone luxury brand in North America. He collects contemporary art, has a passion for adventure travel, and runs marathons. But his favorite pastime is spending time with his family.

What projects are you working on?

We’ve just launched a new advertising campaign with our spokesperson, Scarlett Johansson, celebrated the 20th anniversary of Moët’s partnership with the Golden Globes, and are preparing to launch Moët Ice Imperial this May—the world’s first-ever champagne specifically developed to be enjoyed on ice. If you could take only one person on vacation, who would it be?

Just one? I’d want four: my wife, Yvonne, and my three children, Isabelle, Ines and Matteo. Where are your favorite places to escape to?

Recently I discovered many new parts of Asia like Laos, Vietnam and Langkawi off the coast of Malaysia, where I spent a blissful week in what felt like paradise. And for long weekends in the sun I like Madrid and Capri. What would you pack?

Louis Vuitton Damier Graphite canvas suitcase, $3300, Louis Vuitton, Beverly Hills, 866.VUITTON, louisvuitton.com

I always travel with my Louis Vuitton roll-on luggage. I like to bring a city guide to point me to key cultural attractions. I like stylish, well-made clothing that can carry over from day to night, like tailored jackets and suits. Accessories like my Chaumet cufflinks or skinny ties can also bring a touch of elegance to an otherwise simple look. What items could you not leave behind?

My 30-year-old pair of retro Ray-Ban Carrera sunglasses, running shoes, BlackBerry and sunscreen. What shoes do you bring?

I bring practical shoes: dark blue suede loafers and a pair of dress shoes from Berluti. I love marathon training, so I usually take my Asics Tiger running shoes as well! What is your favorite item this season?

Harvard classmates Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss are bringing designer fashion into every woman’s home. It started out as a business school project, then evolved into shifting the way women shop for special occasions. Whether you need a gown for an event or are simply looking for a sexy dress to wear on a first date, Rent the Runway will carry it. The company’s motto: love. wear. return.

JETSETTERS: Jennifer Hyman, CEO and cofounder of Rent the Runway Jenny Fleiss, president and cofounder of Rent the Runway

What projects are you working on?

JF: Developing Rent the Runway’s iPhone app called “Rent the Runway Style Me.” With this new application, women will be able to rent on the go! If you could take only one person on vacation, who would it be?

JH: My sister, Becky, who was the inspiration for Rent the Runway. She is my favorite traveling companion because we love lazing around on the beach, fabulous dinners (with margaritas!) and shopping. Where’s your favorite place to escape to?

JF: My mother’s house in the Hamptons. Sitting oceanside is such a relaxing escape from New York City. What would you pack?

JF: Rent the Runway’s M Missoni Emily The Empress dress (so versatile), Sephora’s Atomic Volume mascara, Biore makeup remover towelettes. Name three items you couldn’t leave behind.

JF: My dog, Halsey, my BlackBerry, and my running sneakers. How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you?

Alberta Ferretti Dusty Rose dress: rental, $300; retail, $2295, renttherunway.com

JH: During the day I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, but at night I love bold accessories. A little black dress paired with fabulous Valentino heels. I’ll add a necklace by Dannijo or a pair of earrings by Erickson Beamon. Voilà, I’m all dressed up! What handbags?

JH: I love Judith Leiber handbags. What girl doesn’t want a ton of sparkle? What shoes do you bring on vacation?

JF: I’m an avid runner, so I’d definitely bring along some running shoes, and my Louboutins, of course.

Sephora Atomic volume mascara; $15; sephora.com

What’s your favorite item this season?

JH: I’m obsessed with the new Alberta Ferretti dresses we just added to the site. I love the chiffon draping—makes me feel like a modern-day princess! Onitsuka Tiger Fabre DC-S sneaker, $65, onitsukatiger.com

FEMME AU NATUREL Canadian native Cobie Smulders started her career as a model. She traveled the world for five years before deciding she wanted to act, and then landed the first starring role she auditioned for. How amazing is that? Hermès Saint-Louis Tommy cocktail glass, $625 each, Hermès, Beverly Hills, 310-278-6440

Cocktail Hour —Vonetta Encarnacao & Sherryl White Take a ride with us back in time. We’re headed to a place where Hollywood royalty salutes the ubiquitous cocktail hour. Recall glorious visions of an era when Hollywood was portrayed as a magical world unto itself—where the beautiful ones dressed impeccably and hosted super-chic parties like there was no tomorrow. If you’ve ever laid eyes on scenes from a soirée thrown by the Rat Pack, it’s hard to forget the images of a debonair Sinatra in his porkpie hat lounging with a flawlessly turned-out Ava Gardner by his side. This colorful world epitomizes movie-star glamour, and inspires us to celebrate high style, a good martini, and fabulous cocktail attire. Here’s to the good life! To honor the spirit of the times, throw caution to the wind. Bottega Veneta’s Meta Brisée chair features leather as smooth as butter, and its signature weave envelops the decadent pillow. In a color reminiscent of fine cognac, it’s the ideal backdrop for taking in the scene. Bottega’s metal side table with leather-wrapped legs

CHANEL Fine Jewelry Camelia Nervure ring in 18K white gold, black and white diamonds, $59,000, CHANEL Fine Jewelry Boutiques, 800-550-0005

is made to play the role of a mini bar. Whether shaken or stirred, this Saint-Louis for Hermès cocktail shaker and colorful glasses in diamond-cut crystal make enchanting hosts for the perfectly blended martini. To liven things up, enhance the flavor of your concoction with a unique mix that matches your color fancy. A Blackcurrant Twist in a deep purple martini glass is pure delight. Happy-making cocktails also arrive in the form of rings and dresses. Stack any of these gorgeous baubles on your finger simply because diamonds are a girl’s best friend. And nothing announces that you’re in the mood for a good time quite like this flirty Coquette Couture cocktail dress. Embellished with exotic feathers and sculpted to show off your best assets from every vantage point, you should feel free to shimmy the night away. Pair this heavenly confection with a vintage metal clutch adorned with crystals and divine, scalloped cut-out five-inch heels in rich black suede by LaRare. This hour is definitely yours for the taking.

Deborah Sawaf is the designer behind Thale Blanc, the label whose hot new handbag is La Pochette—fashion’s new it bag. She shares with Courtney Fortune why every woman should have one.

t’s Wednesday morning and Deborah Sawaf is busy making breakfast, as she does monthly for the elderly mothers of a few friends. As I am invited into her elegant West Los Angeles home, I imagine a group of chatty, welldressed women in their eighties straight from a scene in Gianni Di Gregorio’s Pranzo di Ferragosto. “I like to make a big Arabic-Indian–style breakfast,” the gorgeous mother of three says with a smile. “I love entertaining.” Deborah shares her now bustling residence with her home office and business, as the creator of luxury accessory line Thale Blanc. The antithesis of bulky handbags, Thale Blanc’s unique designs are tailored to the lifestyle of today’s woman-on-the-go and our near-savage mobile-device dependency. “The idea came from a necessity for myself,” she explains. “When I’m out and have my little kids with me, it’s impossible to keep track of everything. For me it’s a necessity as a professional and as a mom, but I also know designing for mobile technology is the way life is going.” Her bags are small and slim to fit the shape of an iPhone or BlackBerry, made from fine leather, exotic skins, and completely customizable with accents like charms and her La Pochette collection’s signature tassel. She explains that details for La Pochette are carefully chosen to work with any outfit. “It’s all about versatility and making the basic need for being hands-free beautiful. I don’t want functionality to compromise style.” When asked about the woman she designs for, Deborah portrays a day of running errands around town, coffee with friends, a trip to the gym—active but still fashionable. “I hear a cell ring in public and watch someone scramble to answer, and I think, that woman needs a La Pochette.” And of course that woman needs options. Customization is key to the collection—the line is created in a variety of styles, colors and textures, all pieces detachable, with specialty bags geared to kids and teens. “Unfortunately, the fashion world is not built for versatility; you have to buy one thing, and then another, and another.” This is why, she says, her products are able to stand alone as a range of elegant accessories that aim to simplify. She is currently expanding her line into evening handbags and custom Thale Blanc jewelry, but her ambition is to ultimately make La Pochette synonymous with the purchase of a phone. “We all lead really hectic lives…why complicate things more?” Deborah Sawaf’s collection is a realization of this mantra. She understands the importance of keeping things simple so she can enjoy what matters most, like a bright mid-week breakfast with friends.

Expert: Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour Signature Procedure: Fillers The growing demand for quick procedures to provide a younger and healthier appearance with minimal down-time has resulted in many new procedures. Here are just a few: Nose shape irregularities. Correcting and improving certain irregularities on the nose can now be achieved using fillers such as Radiesse or Juvéderm.

Refreshed looking eyes. The skin discoloration and deepening of the lines on the lower eyelid can be refreshed and rejuvenated by using fillers such as Juvéderm, Restylane, Perlane, and others. The injections are quick and pain-free; the results are rapid, and the longevity varies.

Skin improvement. The latest skin treatment uses the OxyGlow device (Innovative Med, Inc.) to improve skin tone and texture. Clinical studies have shown the results to be tighter skin, softer texture, decreased brown spots and overall younger-appearing skin. Bio-Serum (Neocutis pharmaceutical) contains pro-collagen amino acids and a bio-mimetic peptide to reduce the signs of aging. Beauty RED CARPET

gENLUXshop Call it an investment in awards season—a time when Hollywood searches for gorgeous gowns, borrowed bling and stunning stilettos before traipsing down the red carpet. But as SUSAN CAMPOS finds, that’s just the beginning. We know it’s all about the dress on the red carpet, but the nails may need a little sparkle too. Butter London has a color called Dosh—a mix of molten apple green and gold that’s all the rage in Hollywood these days. It also blends in perfectly for the nominee who might walk away with an Oscar. Butter London Nail Laquer, $14, butterlondon.com. For the perfect manicure try Luda at Yuki Sharoni in Beverly Hills. 310-266-9830 Barneys New York, Beverly Hills is a hot spot these days. Not just for the shoes and designer dresses, but for a man who is known to his clients simply as Patrick—a single name that in certain circles can make one blush. That’s because Patrick Foley is the resident makeup artist and personal shopper at Barneys. His job comes complete with a makeup studio conveniently located next to the Louboutins and Manolos on the first floor. He flawlessly paints the faces of a number of high-profile Hollywood types before big events. He says this season it’s all about a nude lip on the red carpet for his famous clients. Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick by Hourglass in Fable, $30, Barneys New York, Beverly Hills, 310-276-4400

BODY BUFF Dr. Harold Lancer is known in Hollywood as the dermatologist whose patients walk around with perfect skin. Before going to an awards show they may get a little resurfacing or simply turn to the product line. One of the star products is Body Buff—a scrub formulated to deliver a soothing wave of heat when it touches the skin. And for those wanting to show a little skin, Body Buff is a must-have, as it removes dead skin cells and excess oil. Body Buff, $50, Dr. Harold Lancer, 310-278-8444

122 GENLUX SPRING I / 2011

BRIGHT EYES Professional makeup artists go to Nigel’s Beauty Emporium in the San Fernando Valley before preparing clients for the red carpet. Nigel’s is filled with beauty products from abroad. Try Collyre Blue (also known as Blue drops), a French hangover cure that creates crystal-clear eyes on a bloodshot actor or actress. Even if you haven’t had too much to drink the night before, the drops make the whites of the eyes whiter. Collyre Blue, $24.95, Nigel’s, 818-760-3902

WHITEN UP A must to take in the town car is the Blush Professional Whitening Pen for that megawatt smile. Just whip out your compact fifteen minutes before hitting the red carpet, and take out the pen with a special formula that whitens teeth and removes tough food, coffee or red wine stains. Blush Professional Whitening Pen, $19.99, myfirstblush.com

SOFT SHOE While enhancing one’s view from the top, this season’s dramatic platforms and unworldly wedges have all but neglected the feet. So what’s a girl to do? BEAUTY HAIR DO’S

FRANK GALASSO FOR MARGARET MALDONADO Basso & Brooke SS11 Hair experts from one of the top agencies chime in on what’s hot for this season: Try going more natural! Bobs are the next big thing!

“A LOT OF THE 2011 LOOKS RELY ON HAIRSTYLES, NOT PARTICULARLY HAIRCUTS. BUT IF YOU’RE RELYING ON A HAIRCUT FOR CHANGE, THINK DRAMATIC ALSO. IF YOU’RE GOING SHORT, THINK MIA FARROW’S SIXTIES “PIXIE CROP.” FOR MID-LENGTH HAIR, TRY FAYE DUNAWAY’S BONNIE AND CLYDE BOB. THIS IS THE DEFINITE TREND. The look is sculpted and swings. With a little backcombing it’s rounder and less geometric—with even longer bobs that hit the collar bone. With long hair, get rid of the shaggy ends and go for fresh, crisp layers that add bounce and fullness.”—CLYDE HAYGOOD

THE TRENDS BY GALASSO

COLOR: Hair color has become much more natural and unprocessed. We are seeing richer colors. More brunette, also shades of red and rich, warm caramels and browns. Celebrities have all moved to a much more natural look. Dried-out, bleached, sun-kissed, highlighted and overly blond hair that washes you out is definitely not the new trend. STYLES: Celebrities are asking more and more to not have such a ‘done’ look. Hairstyles have become cleaner looking with cleaner lines, blunter cuts, shorter hair. Bobs at any length instead of shaggy, dry, layered hair. PRODUCTS: Light mousses and volume sprays for fine to medium hair and anti-frizz and shine sprays for thicker and coarser hair. The volumizers I do enjoy using are Condition Naturelle by Leonor Greyl and Ample Angora by Shu Uemura. Both are great products to give the hair tremendous body and movement. To finish off, I like to use the design collection from Joico. I enjoy their spray wax to make the hair more texturized and the finishing spray to give that finished hold without making it too stiff or sticky. Infinium 4 by Loreal is also a good finishing spray; it gives that hold and yet allows natural movements. I like to alternate between the two.

I love usingTom color! PecheuxPastel eye shadows look great when you keep everything fresh and light. The light-reflecting property of pearls enhance your natural beauty by bringing a delicate luminosity to your skin…which brings me to my newest obsessions for spring: Dramatic, vibrant eyes!! Wear darker or more vibrant greens like the forest green shade in CHANEL’s spring collection, CHANEL Ombres Perlées de CHANEL Eyeshadow Palette, that features five shades. It contains a pearled, metallic barely gold-tinged white; metallic pinked bronze with champagne sheen; dirty mauve gray; darkened, charcoal forest green with metallic sheen; and dirty charcoal navy blue with sheen. All five were really pigmented except the purple shade, which was noticeably sheerer. These shadows look great with black liner and black shadow mixed to create more drama. Add a touch of metallic gold, bronze or silver to pop bright shadows and give an ultra-glamorous look. Pair a dramatic eye with a peach, rose or mauve lip color.”—Troy Jensen

This year, three major movies were made in Boston—two are up for Best Picture. TRACY O’CONNOR heads there to check out Hollywood’s East Coast cousin.

I

left Los Angeles in the midst of a heat wave, and arrived in Boston after a brutal Nor’easter. The city—famous for JFK, Paul Revere and Bell Biv DeVoe—was kneedeep in snow. And so was I. I ditched delightful weather, frightful architecture and a potentially eventful second date to experience frightful weather, delightful architecture, and a place I had an aching desire to know. With awards season in full swing and films like T he Town, Social Network and T he Fighter as contenders (all set in and around Boston), no metropolis had more buzz. Armed with wool sweaters, fake fur and one lonely pair of stacked heels, I shivered up to the Liberty Hotel, where I’d be incarcerated for the weekend. Built in 1851, the Liberty was originally the Charles Street Jail, containing Boston’s finest (prior to sentencing). By the 1980s, the edifice stood dormant until developer Richard Friedman acquired the jail at auction and imaginatively transformed it into a posh property. The 16-story, 298-room hotel is now a national landmark, with uncharacteristic beauty and a mandate to preserve its unique “jailness.” An architectural aria, designed by Alexandra Champalimaud, it has won virtually every design award. Standard rooms are simple, while oth-

ers offer panoptic views of the urban skyline and the Charles River. I got a peek at the Ebersol Suite, where Christian Bale slept while filming T he Fighter, Gorbachev once showered, and Cameron and A-Rod got cozy. Dressed like the Michelin Man, I took the “T” four stops to Harvard Square, met an accomplice and bumbled around Cambridge and Harvard’s campus. I snuck inside empty classrooms with graffitied chalkboards, and wondered how on earth the Winklevii could have fit in those tiny chairs. We drank ale at the local brewery and then headed back to de-ice. After a relaxing bath and blowdry, I escaped downstairs to Scampo. The warm, polished and seductively lit Italian restaurant was a vacation from the frigid outdoors. I’d been set up with a quintessentially Boston itinerary by local entrepreneurs, and Scampo was first on their gustatory agenda. We devoured delicately rendered lobster pizza, a fresh selection from the mozzarella bar featuring Cape scallops and finished with the Wagyu sirloin. Even I didn’t know I could eat that much. We saved room for a nightcap, and split our time between Alibi Bar (the jail’s original “drunk tank”) and the Lobby Bar, both in the hotel and bustling. The next two days, we squeezed in as much as we could. We walked Boston Common, the central park

dating back to 1634, and watched bundled children ice-skate and sled. We window-shopped in Beacon Hill, filled with quaint stores and charming antiques. Strolled Newbury Street—New England’s Rodeo Drive—where Valentino, Burberry and the vanguard boutique Alan Bilzerian stand housed in renovated 19th-century brownstones. We also visited the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a Boston treasure and one of my favorite art experiences of all time. The museum, imagined by Gardner in the early 20th century, marries Venetian and Moorish architecture and shelters her uniquely personal collection of primarily Renaissance art. The center courtyard is a devastatingly serene botanical garden, showcasing specimen plants and sculpture. We’d worked up an appetite and had loads yet to check off the list: brunch at Towne Stove and Spirits, the newest from beloved chef Lydia Shire, dinner at Toro, a.k.a. “the most difficult reservation in town,” and drinks at Sonsie, a Boston must. On our last night, we found ourselves relaxed at The Playwright in Southie, enjoyed a Guinness with locals and watched the Boston Celtics put the Lakers to shame. Despite Kobe’s loss, my experience in Boston was all gain. Assuming I still have date two back in LA.

Think Swarovski and several things come to mind: glittering magnetism and enchantment, and a staple sparkle for many of today’s most sought-after designers. The world leader in crystal products, Swarovski is a brand that stands alone in cuttingedge collaboration with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld and Christopher Kane. But behind all the glitz is a savvy heiress who has transformed the family business of over five decades into an international empire of luxury and innovation. Austria-born Nadja Swarovski began her work at the company in 1995 and has since shaped it into a household name and fashion icon. Her projects have ranged from high-end chandeliers inspired by fifties glamour, to her extravagant Atelier Swarovski jewelry line available in breathtaking and otherworldly colors. She has also created a platform for up-and-coming talent: Swarovski’s Creative Services Centre, which donates its products and provides an education about forward-thinking uses for crystal to emerging designers. Nadja plays many roles—the beautiful figurehead, vice president of communications, and creative director—but it’s the little things (that accompany the finer things) in life which she enjoys most.
