W

hat comes to mind when you think ‘summertime’? Sun? Flowers? Swimming? Vacation? All are right! It’s also time to let your body breathe and be free of lots of clothing. Yes, it’s swimwear season—the theme of this issue! It’s my favorite season, perhaps because I was born on the second day of summer, which means another birthday is approaching (gasp). It’s also around this time each year that I spend a month vacationing in Europe, where I am originally from. This year I’m traveling to Paris, then it’s off to London for a few days where I will reconnect with my lovely cousins who live there and never fail to show me a good time. After that, I’m going to visit my favorite one and only sister and nephew in Spain. And then I’ll end this amazing trip by going on a yacht along the coast of Napoli, stopping in Capri, Ischia, Positano, Amalfi and a perhaps revisit Pompeii. Italy, j’adore! But ask me what I want for my birthday and I’ll tell you. First on my list (of course there’s a list) is the new Vertu Ascent blasted-titanium with polished stainless steel and red leather phone. This is the Rolls Royce of phones. My second most coveted item is the lavender Dior Granville tote in Ostrich—so superb! It will go perfectly with the trend-defining nail color from CHANEL, Paradoxal, a dark gray-violet. It emerges as the new statement-maker of the season. (p. 24)

16 GENLUX SUMMER / 2010

Lately, fashion designers have gone from designing clothes to designing homes, restaurants and hotels. Ralph Lauren opened another restaurant in Paris—which I will visit. He said his goal was to create a unique environment that captures the glamour, culture, and artistic spirit of the Paris he had fallen in love with. And have you visited or seen pictures of the luxurious Armani hotel in Dubai? Absolutely incredible. But that’s not all: how about designing a safe? Yes, you read correctly. Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld has designed the world’s most expensive home safe from Dottling: it’s called Narcissus. (p. 24) Now that’s pretty amazing! It’s just a matter of time before we see the new CHANEL Spa, or one day we might be flying on the very fashionable Hermès airline. Hmm…I actually wouldn’t mind that! This issue is another photographic success, with nine fashion spreads (other magazines have only one or two), and marks the first time someone is gracing our cover for the second time—the beautiful Jessica Alba. She’s so sweet and extremely down-to-earth— one of my favorite people in the entertainment business. We also love her publicist, Brad Cafarelli. A dream! Another class act is the handsome actor Jason Lewis (p. 34). His shoot, which included the gorgeous Ford model Laura Dunn, was a lot of fun. Now go, fashion divas! Rendez-vous à Capri!

It was a celebration of women as Women in Film presented the 2010 Crystal + Lucy Awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. This year’s honors went to Donna Langley, Courteney Cox, Zoe Saldana, Lisa Cholodenko, and Cynthia Pucheck for their work and contributions to the industry. The event, sponsored by MaxMara and Kodak, was a gala fundraiser dinner for Women in Film—a nonprofit helping women in the entertainment and communication industries through networking, education programs, scholarships, funds, etc.

Art and design and Hollywood merged in Beverly Hills as Diego Della Valle and Tod’s celebrated their new boutique opening in a celebration to welcome welcome MOCA’s new director, Jeffrey Deitch. Guests were welcomed to the new store which boasts a home-design concept unique to any Tod’s store. The evening featured the VIP showroom, which had been transformed into a 1940s supper club environment by Academy Award–winning production designer/art director, Dante Ferretti, and Academy Award–winning costume designer Milena Canonero. Canonero also designed a bag exclusive to the new boutique. A private dinner hosted by Della Valle followed at the Tower Bar.

It was all a bit of history repeating as South Coast Plaza welcomed Ferragamo’s ‘Creations’ installation, a temporary exhibit/installation featuring remakes of Ferragamo’s classic handbags and shoes that are found in the Salvatore Ferragamo museum. With handmade and original details and limited availability, the lucky purchasers were able to take home a piece of fashion history. Among those on display were the F platforms, the Carmen mirrored platforms, the Rainbow wedge, and iconic Ferragamo handbag designs. The original Creations installation is found in the Florence boutique, and only a handful of boutiques and concessions around the world sell the items—adding to their allure. The South Coast Plaza opening event benefited Camino Health Center.

Jason lewis keeps it cool Hot off Sex and the City 2, Jason Lewis tries to convince our Almie Rose that he’s just a normal, genuine guy.

SUMMER / 2010 GENLUX 37

J

ason Lewis is an actor with a coolness previously embodied by Steve McQueen and Robert Mitchum. He is best known as Smith Jerrod, Samantha Jones’s actor boyfriend in the Sex and the City film franchise. Like in the movie, where Smith’s career burns white-hot, Jason finds life imitating art. But how is Jason different from Smith? “I just opened a bottle of wine,” is his playful response (Smith is sober). Lewis is chatting with Genlux from Lyon, France, on his way to a friend’s restaurant. He’s chill, and candid. When asked if he’s ever met a woman like Samantha in real life, he pauses before letting out a loaded, “Oh, yeah.” He elaborates, “When I was about 21, I’d moved to Paris and was on my own, and I met this great group of bohemian friends. And there was this one woman who was wealthy and single and sort of entertained the artists of the city. I think she took many a lover. I wasn’t one of them. Someone pointed out to me that she had set the lighting in her house so she knew where every light was, and if you watched her, you could see her move from pool of light to pool of light so she was always in her best light. I thought she was pretty incredible.” Indeed. Lewis began his career as a model, appearing in huge campaigns for Guess? and Tommy Hilfiger, among others. It’s probably not a huge stretch to say that he’s no stranger to female adoration. What, then, is a dating deal-breaker for him? “A sense of righteousness. A person who is unwilling to see things past their own nose.” Lewis has a great sense of humor about himself. When I ask him what his most overrated and underrated

aspects are, he replies, “My most overrated aspect is my looks; the most underrated is my incredibly charming, witty intelligence.” Then almost immediately pounces in with, “No, I’m kidding! I never rate myself. That was all sarcasm! I hope you make that clear.” He laughs, and it’s a relief to hear that his laugh comes from a genuine place and not one of presumption. You get the sense that he’s a real genuine guy. Aside from cleaning toilets, there’s no household chore he won’t tackle. “I do my own laundry, take out my own trash, do my landscaping, fix my own plumbing, my own electricity. I was raised that way. If it’s broken, I fix it.” He even takes a friendly ribbing in stride when I ask him if he always cleans his pool wearing a dinner jacket. “No, no… just when I have to.” He acknowledges that it can be awkward having to shoot so many sex scenes. “There’s definitely always a sense of apprehension and awkwardness to it. But in a way, I’m glad I had the experience because it forces you to face yourself.” He’s a talented actor who gives his Smith character a sense of naïveté and boyishness while also showing his strong side; it’s the perfect combination that made him so believable to so many loyal viewers. But where does he stand on a very serious and complicated issue? “Are you a fan of cats, and if so, are you a fan of cats dressed as humans?” There’s silence, and then that great laugh. “Yeah, I think cats are amazing. I don’t know that they need to be dressed as humans, though. That said, I dress my dog in sweatshirts all the time, so I would be okay with it.”

A

I

n The Killer Inside Me, the latest film by director Michael Winterbottom, a prostitute named Joyce Lakeland gets mixed up in a complicated affair with Lou Ford (Casey Affleck). Some of the scenes, like the one where Joyce gets her face pummeled during a sadomasochistic tryst, are so salacious and believable, it’s been reported that audience members at the Sundance Film Festival actually stormed out of the theater. Temptress Jessica Alba, 29, plays the role of Joyce and the reviews have been very good.

lba slips past the iron gates for our Genlux photo shoot at Smashbox Studios in Hollywood driving a black hybrid SUV with dark tinted windows. The large gates seal off behind her, shutting out an army of menacing-looking vehicles with cameras aimed out of their windows like rifles. “They follow me from my house and throughout the day,” Alba shares rather matter-offactly. “I try not to have interaction with them—especially because of my daughter. They’re strangers. You never know if they’re a weird stalker. They’re really invasive and pretty aggressive.” She chooses to defuse them: “I pretty much ignore them. The more energy I put into it, the more power it gives them.” Alba was eight months pregnant when we first photographed her for the cover of Genlux. Since then, she and hubby film producer Cash Warren moved into their new Beverly Hills home. “My house is warm and cozy,” she says. “There’s a lot of light and lots of little spaces for our child to be creative.” Coincidentally, it was their daughter Honor Marie’s birthday. “She’s two today!” Alba exclaims, “So it was a little over two years ago that we shot together.” I ask her how much baby weight she’d gained, and she pauses like no one else had ever asked the question. “Um…over 50 pounds… actually, over 55 pounds. I stopped counting at eight months because I got too depressed. I was like, ‘Whatever!’ I’ll deal with it after I have the baby!” Not surprisingly, she’s shed all of that weight, and finds herself back on all those “most sexy human” lists like AskMen.com’s Top 99, where she occupies number 5. (She previously held the number 1 spot, in 2006). Appropriately, the concept of today’s photo shoot with Moshe and Eddie Brakha, the brilliant father-and-son photographic team, is a kitschy, tongue-in-cheek guide on how to teach your child “life” lessons. And Alba’s all game. “Yeah! It’s cool! What’s fun about this shoot in particular is I get to play a character. I love that! I personally feel more self-conscious, shy and embarrassed if it’s all about me. But if I can play a character, then I feel complete freedom to just go for it.” Alba believes that her self-consciousness stems from her childhood. “I was picked on a lot. I was different. My dad was in the military, so we moved a lot, and so I was always the new kid. I had a bunch of illnesses, so I would have to take off from school for weeks at a time to be in the hospital. So the kids just thought I was weird.” And then

she really rips at my heartstrings. “I would have asthma attacks, and I would have a breathing machine that was really loud. And when I would play sports, I would be on the sidelines with my breathing machine. It wouldn’t deter me from playing sports, but I got made fun of.” They’re not making fun of her anymore. Like playing Joyce in The Killer Inside Me, Alba enjoys tackling difficult material. She stars both as good and bad identical twins in Robert Rodriguez’s action thriller Machete (scheduled for release in September), and then, as effortlessly sexy and beautiful as she is, she morphs her expressive face into funny characters like the pharmaceutical sales rep in the third of the Fockers franchise, The Little Fockers, with Ben Stiller (hitting theaters in December). In both films, Alba shares billing with her favorite actor, Robert De Niro. Jessica Alba was born in Pomona, California, and grew up in a family that was big on respect—especially toward elders. She hopes to instill this trait in her own child, along with kindness and humility. “Treat others how you want to be treated—with the understanding that everyone is a human being trying to do the best they can,” she says, “Never treat anyone with disrespect because no one is better than anyone else.” So what enlightenment has Alba attained since becoming a mom? “I’ve learned so much!” she enthuses. “Like really, truly living in the moment and enjoying each day and really taking in simple things. To spend time with people you love—no matter what it is you’re doing—whether I’m finger-painting with my daughter at home or going to the grocery store.” Then Alba strides into a deeper introspection about contentment that her daughter has helped reveal. “Before, I would just go through the motions. I was always seeking, and it was always about work. It was always about ‘I’ll be happy when this happens or when that happens.’ It was about setting goals and not being content with the here and now. I was always striving for something else. Or like something better was out there. I’ve really learned to genuinely appreciate each moment. And to just enjoy the simple things. Like Honor saying a word she’d never said before…or wanting to dress up…or bath time—the simple little things. And not thinking that it has to be a momentous event to be happy or satisfied.” The teacher has become the student. G

Getaway: LAS VEGAS

gENLUXshop ROOMS WITH A VIEW

once a vegas-hater, sTEPHEN CHRISTOPHER visits the mandarin oriental, and RETURNS with a new perspective. Many tastemakers perceive an elegant Las Vegas as little more than a preposterous concept. Recent developments, though, like The Palazzo and the CityCenter, may have them rushing to recast their votes. The recently opened Mandarin Oriental furthers that notion by bringing real style to Vegas. It sits like a zenned-out, fourth-quarter Phil Jackson amidst the chaos of the crowd. We snared a new Mercedes-Benz E350 convertible for the drive to Vegas—a zippy convertible with a special AIRCAP wind deflector that makes riding with the top down nearly as windless as with it up. A one-touch button puts the top down for cruising down Tropicana Blvd.—perfect for warm summer nights. In a town where money really is no object, and back when there was plenty of it, the Mandarin Oriental smartly awarded their 400-room Las Vegas project to architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox, and interior designer Adam D. Tihany. The design duo has created an aesthetic masterpiece in the desert. Guests may opt to travel in style to and from the airport with the Mercedes-Benz S series airport transfer service (concierge is standing by). Since the hotel isn’t attached to a casino, you’ll love that there’s no ding-dinging of slot machines or pathetic faces of those pouring their pennies into the abyss.

Top optional: the new Mercedes-Benz E350, seen here pulling up to the Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, is the perfect weekend escape machine. mercedesbenz.com

The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas

The Mandarin Oriental group of hotels is considered by most luxury travelers as the top of the heap. Here, the same rule applies. With the exception of the elevators, where you can’t merely take one from the ground level to your suite (with some annoyance, you must transfer at the lobby level on the 23rd floor to another elevator), the hotel is picture-perfect. The guestrooms offer jetliner views and a nice assortment of techno gadgets like a hand-held control panel that enable guests to manage the lighting, room temperature and entertainment systems at the touch of a button. There’s even a smart valet cabinet alongside your door. Order the morning paper, or suit to be cleaned, and you needn’t even open your door. Open the small valet door and your goodies are waiting for you. The hotel offers plush watering holes and restaurants to keep you hydrated in the desert, like the Mandarin Bar on the 23rd floor. The bar offers stunning Vegas views in a quiet atmosphere that welcomes intelligent conversation. For dining, there’s three-star Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire’s first restaurant in the United States, Twist by Pierre Gagnaire, and the all-day dining establishment, MOzen Bistro, which features authentic Asian dishes and multinational fare. The 27,000-square-foot Spa at the Mandarin Oriental has 17 treatment rooms, multiple relaxation and water experiences, an expansive fitness center, and dedicated yoga studio. The tranquil environment is a completely holistic experience based on the union of modern techniques and Eastern traditions. You can also enjoy a magnificent pool facility with 20 cabanas and a pool café, serving seasonal, light fare. If you want to enjoy Vegas entertainment with the privilege of retreating to a quiet, luxury hotel and spa, this is it. If you’re a high-roller who appreciates supreme luxury, then one of the three lavish presidential suites on the hotel’s top floors (each measures over 3,200 square feet) is for you. Mandarin Oriental. Now, an elegant Las Vegas is no longer an oxymoron.

Hot Tips for Summer! —George Blodwell I just returned from London where Amanda Eliasch, our fashion editor, celebrated her birthday with a party in St. Marks Church in Mayfair. Amanda graciously flew me to London to attend this event—I can’t thank her enough. I had a wonderful time. It was a spectacular event with a very glamorous crowd. From the art world came collector Kay Saatchi and practitioners Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Tim Noble, and Sue Webster. Star milliner Philip Treacy and style dictatrix Trinny Woodall partied with rock aristocracy represented by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Nick Mason. Also there were Princess Chantal of Hanover and Countess von Bismarck. Best head-dress? Heather Kerzner. Best dancer? Musician Magnus Fiennes. John Lewis was the florist, and Carl de Canada the deejay. And if Amanda topped the bill, then Best Supporting Actor was her decorator friend Nicky Haslam, whose outfit was pure Zorro in Ruritania. While in London, I was lucky enough to stay at the Langham oldest hotel in Europe. It has just gone through a multimillion-dollar makeover. The bathrooms are breathtaking. My morning breakfasts in the hotel restaurant were truly beautiful, with the pink coffee pot that perfectly matched the roses. I was in Heaven. I have to partake in high tea when I’m in England so I always frequent Fortnum and Mason in Piccadilly.

All I had to do was lie there for 40 minutes and watch as the red laser lights danced over my spare tire. And lo and behold, the results were amazing. Katie took this opportunity to also put an intensive collagen mask on my face, the latest and greatest from Purigenex ICM. I am so happy with the results. Listen up, men! Burberry has a très chic pea coat for summer. continues his reputation of great style with his lovely lavender jacket. am an insecure person. I am also a jealous person. These two comments are not necessarily related, though they go together like anger management and Sean Penn. Basically, I am the type of person who should not be on Facebook. But I am, and it’s getting to the p oint where I’m going to have to ask a trusted friend to change the password for me so I can’t get into it. I know, this seems drastic. But the Internet is getting out of control. I can Google anyone and discover anything: members of my high school class who now have awesome jobs, my boyfriend’s exgirlfriends who have effortless style, and an ex-boyfriend who now looks like a Great Depression–era farmer. Thank you, Internet, for this wealth of useless yet somehow unbelievably important information.

I like to think of my Googling not as insecure, insane stalking, but more like I’m the Indiana Jones of search engines; it is my job to sift through the ruins of ancient relationships (personal, professional, and romantic), deftly switching the precious facts I’ve gathered with a bag of uselessness, before the giant stone ball drops behind me and threatens to run me over. This is purely archeological. I need to see photos of a former close friend’s boyfriend to see if he’s cute (he’s not). I need to know if my ex-boyfriend is still in that band that kind of sounded like The Cars (he’s not). Then suddenly it’s 1:30 in the morning and I’m reminiscing about high school while simultaneously watching clips of Titanic on YouTube. This is not a healthy use of time. Especially when I discover that a former classmate of mine has a career I would pillage for. That’s right, pillage. As in plunder, pillage, rifle and loot. Real pirate shit. But instead of feeling happy for her and moving on with my own lovely life, I grit my teeth and click “next” to see more photos of her with Quentin Tarantino.

114 GENLUX SUMMER / 2010

Are others able to resist the temptations of Google and Facebook? My best friend was not. She was delighted to discover that her boyfriend’s ex had thick forests of hair under her arms. “Look,” she whispered, pointing a perfectly manicured nail at her computer screen. Her delight could not be masked. Her boyfriend’s ex’s Facebook page was practically the Ark of the Covenant. Questions that she didn’t want to ask her boyfriend—Is she prettier than me? What did she like? What did you two have in common?—were immediately answered with a Facebook profile and an album titled “Morning Hike.” It’s all out there. Sometimes, curiosity kills. Ninety percent of the Internet is full of things that you did not need to know and wish you never had known. There is the Pink Heart of Doom. When someone changes their Facebook profile to read that they are (or are no longer) in a relationship, a pink heart appears next to their name. When I was single, it seemed like all I saw were the fresh pink hearts of exes and flings past who had found love and wanted everyone to know it. I wanted to slam my laptop down and smash it against the wall into shards, then use those shards to key cars in parking lots. Would I have found out about their new relationships if not for Facebook? And why was I still Facebook friends with them anyway? Why is it that we’re friends with people on the Internet that we would never even give so much as a courtesy nod to in “real life”? The madness needs to end. I’m going to hang up my Indy fedora. It is actually not my job to uncover these precious artifacts of people’s personal lives. It’s like the climactic scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Indy and his friends are tied up and the Nazis open the Ark, unleashing pure evil. “Shield your eyes!” Indy shouts. “Don’t look directly at it!” I’m shielding my eyes from Facebook.

MAXMARA MAVEN

nicola gerber maramotti talks about travel, packing, and three things she couldn’t possibly leave behind. Nicola Gerber Maramotti was born in Germany, studied in the U.S., and now lives in Italy. In 1991, she met her husband, Ignazio Maramotti, chairman of the MaxMara Fashion Group. Since then, she’s been working for the company as director of European retail development. Together with Luigi Maramotti, chairman of MaxMara and Ignazio’s brother, she was instrumental in developing the company’s Max&Co. brand in Italy and abroad. The couple has four children.

Who is the MaxMara client?

The MaxMara client is an international and cosmopolitan woman— contemporary, sophisticated, interested in the quality of the garments she purchases.

t was years ago, in the middle of a workday, and I was standing in the center of the Santa Monica Airport Barker Hangar during that sacred time of year known as the Barneys Warehouse Sale. As usual, crowds of half-dressed, very intense women were milling about, searching for The Amazing Deal. Having already done plenty of damage among the shoes, I moved on to the cardboard boxes and started digging. Then I saw it. The La Perla label. And it was La Perla’s Black Label. At least for me, that’s the Holy Grail of fine lingerie. With that label, whatever it was, I was going to buy it, and love it, and make it fit.

After much untangling, I had my reward: a black demi bra and matching thong (in my size!) in the finest mesh, with a beautiful architectural structure created by stripes of boning material encased in satin. And it was a steal. I can only describe my emotional state at that moment as utter euphoria. That’s the magic of La Perla. It’s lingerie so fine, so precious, so well made, that even if no one ever sees it, wearing it just makes you feel good. So last November, when the company opened a new location in the luxurious new Malibu Lumber Yard shopping mecca, you could practically hear the Westside’s female population sigh with delight. “The Lumber Yard is a one-of-a-kind retail environment,” says La Perla North America CEO Suzy Biszantz. “We were excited about the opportunity to open a second boutique in the Los Angeles market and to become a part of the Malibu community.”

wear and lingerie, including my favorite, Black Label, which the La Perla company wittily describes as “a White mix of irony and deluxe transone-piece gressions,” and La Perla Studio, with a best-seller at this location. “The Studio snakeskin collection offers a more modern and conprint temporary design with styles in microfiber detail, and stretch tulle that are always a client favor$357 ite,” says Biszantz, adding that it also includes “premium-quality soft cotton pants and tops that make for perfect loungewear and yoga styles.” Clearly, La Perla knows its market; after all, nothing screams “Malibu” like an uber-high-end yoga pant. For obvious reasons, the label’s swimwear lines— “renowned for innovative couture hand detailing,” Biszantz says—are also a huge hit at La Perla Malibu. But the store has already become something more than a retail hub. One of Biszantz’s goals for La Perla is to support charitable organizations in the communities where La Perla boutiques are located by hosting in-store promotions and shopping events. To that end, the Malibu store recently threw a “swimwear-focused” fête that benefited Heal the Bay and was hosted by Perrey Reeves and Jen Rade. “La Perla is aware of the increasing importance our clients place on philanthropy, and believes that these local charity organizations have a positive impact on their communities,” Biszantz says. Super-sexy lingerie and a social conscience—I like it!

As for me, I know lightning doesn’t strike twice, but I’ll continue to dig through cardboard boxes at the Barneys sale, hoping for another La Perla–related eureka moment. And La Perla Malibu carries the brand’s complete line of swimuntil that happens, I’ll see you in Malibu. La Perla, 3939 Cross Creek Rd, Malibu, 310-456-7078, laperla.com

NEW attitude Still going strong after 48 years, the Greta boutique has withstood fashion’s fickle finger. Now, as the 86-year-old Greta herself shares with our Almie Rose, the real secret of successful style lies in one simple Gretaism.

W

hen I arrive to interview Greta, of the venerable Beverly Hills institution, I am greeted by Greta herself, wearing a hip Vivienne Westwood T-shirt and her signature gold Greta jewelry. I introduce myself. “What’s Genlux?” she asks. “I’ve never heard of it.” I explain to her who I am and whom I write for—when I’m interrupted. “She’s playing with you,” laughs Victoria, Greta’s self-proclaimed right hand. Greta breaks into a smile and laughs—the first of many. Her poker face is so good she could work as a double agent. Although she’s 86, Greta has the mind of a 20-year-old. This is evident when you browse her store (a 48-year-old mainstay) and see her wild, yet also strangely defined, designs. From the outside Greta looks like a perfectly nice, typical Beverly Drive boutique. Inside, it’s large—and bright white; everything looks clean and everything gleams. But tucked seductively in the racks and displayed on glass tables, you’ll find pieces like a black and white fringed military jacket, a white A-line Mod-looking shift with black vinyl patches, and the most exquisitely beaded mini dresses. “Where does your inspiration come from?” I ask Greta, amazed. “Everyone asks that same question,” she muses. (Oops.) “From here,” she says, pointing to her head. She has a lot to draw from. She left Vienna at 11 years of age and headed for England. When she was about 20, she returned to Vienna and started her fashion empire. In her younger days Greta was known for using a walking stick, and not because she needed one. Spats were also one of her personal touches. Complementing Greta couture are lines from Sachin + Babi,

Vivienne Westwood, Sarah Pacini, Majestic, Basix Black Label, and many others. This summer season Greta is busy making one-of-a-kind bridal party collections. She specializes in mother-of-the-bride, mother-of-the-groom and custom-made bridal gowns. I spy one long, creamy white Empire-style piece. The top is pintucked, complete with embroidered flowers. One bride opted for detailed beaded minidresses as bridesmaid gowns. There is no one type of customer here. They range from old to young, from coast to coast, from all over the world. While in the store I saw an older gray-haired woman try on a coat, and later a young blonde woman tried on an outrageous miniskirt. The boutique has something for everyone and has become a favorite for Beverly Hills wives, though being one is certainly not a requirement to shop here. “Dressing is an attitude,” Greta declares with a clever smile —a good mantra for the store. The pieces here are exquiste. The choice of fabrics devine. Even a simple skirt is accentuated with a stunning array of pleats and detailed handwork. Each piece is a work of art. Truly exquisite. Shopping at Greta feels like a little girl’s dream of having access to an eccentric yet madly stylish dress-up closet. But this is no dream. This is the woman who launched the careers of major European designers and now collaborates with Alvaro of James Galanos fame. And there’s no sign she’s slowing down. When asked for advice, she pauses and offers, “Keep going. Don’t let the age bother you.” She would know. That, and “Wear it from the shoulders.” I immediately take her advice, sit up straighter and roll my shoulders back. Like Victoria said earlier, “No one says no to Greta.”

I

was 10 years old the first time I visited the Waldorf-Astoria. I remember stepping out of the cab and looking at this colossal building decorated with colorful Christmas lights—feeling overwhelmed with excitement—and so impressed with the majestic Park Avenue entrance. Many a high-profile personality has stayed there. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor maintained their New York residence in The Towers. John and Jackie Kennedy spent their wedding night in a Waldorf Towers suite, and many movies were shot there as well. Earlier this year, I visited New York to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and revisited this legendary landmark. This time I chose to stay at the Waldorf Towers, a boutique hotel adjacent to the WaldorfAstoria with its own entrance and lobby. The atmosphere is homey and serene, there’s no fuss or craziness of a huge lobby. The furniture reminded me of a French chateau. Crystal chandeliers hang from the high ceilings, casting a sparkling glow on

My suite was spacious and elegantly appointed with French and English antiques, as well as museum-quality reproductions. After a rough day, the best way to unwind is to pay a visit to the gorgeous 14,000-square-foot Guerlain Spa—one of the few in the world. Located on the 19th floor, the view will take your breath away and the zen décor, inspired by the hotel’s legendary Art Deco design, will transport you to another world where you are the queen— with everyone catering to your every need. The Waldorf-Astoria was the world’s first skyscraper hotel, and remains one of the world’s largest Art Deco buildings. It took a decade and $200 million to restore the finery of its grand public spaces. LESS PAIN, MORE GAIN The future of plastic surgery promises less discomfort, faster healing, and better outcomes. Davis B. Nguyen, M.D. tells Genlux readers how. —Dawn Shand Johnson

What is an example of a cutting-edge surgical technique you employ? How does it represent an improvement over older methods?

The most cutting-edge surgical technique I am utilizing right now is a minimally invasive endoscopic browlift in combination with the use of fibrin glue wound sealant. A forehead lift or brow lift is intended to raise the upper eyelids and brows, reduce forehead creases, and soften frown lines. The endoscopic approach to browlifts represents a significant improvement over older methodologies wherein a large incision was made across the entire length of the forehead. The older technique is more invasive, can result in an unsightly scar and can negatively affect the patient’s hairline—and the results can appear unnatural. I use an endoscope (an instrument with a probe at the tip that transmits images to a TV screen), which allows me to perform a browlift by making only four small, well-concealed incisions in the patient’s hairline. Furthermore, I use fibrin glue to seal the wound bed, which inhibits the collection of fluid

underneath the skin. This results in less bruising, less swelling, and faster healing. Most important, the overall results of the procedure leave patients appearing natural and refreshed. What are some recent advancements in non-surgical cosmetic procedures?

I am really pleased with the recent emergence of injectable fillers containing lidocaine, like Juvéderm XC. I routinely use dermal fillers to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and to add volume to parts of the face that have lost collagen. The addition of the numbing agent lidocaine to this popular product affords my patients significantly greater comfort during Photo: Michelle Hood treatment. Given that injectable treatments need to be repeated two to three times a year, I welcome any advancement that helps to improve my patients’ comfort level during the procedure. Are there any other new tips, tricks, or products you recommend?

I’ve had great results using oxygen treatments to speed wound healing for my post-surgical patients. During these 30-minute sessions, post-procedural skin is nourished by a direct infusion of healing vitamins, nutrients, and oxygen, leaving the skin revitalized, supple, and healthy. As part of my comprehensive post-operative regimen, I also require that patients apply Kelo-cote, a silicone-based scar gel, to their incisions two to three times daily. Kelo-cote hydrates, protects, and normalizes collagen synthesis, thereby helping to ensure nearly invisible scars. As far as anti-aging products are concerned, Kinerase’s New C8 Under Eye Treatment is meeting a pressing demand for a painless solution to those pesky, dark undereye circles. The combination of Vitamin C and the Snap-8 neuropeptide also helps to reduce redness and puffiness and improves the appearance of fine lines around the eye. It has been a big hit with patients.

CORAL MOTIF Celebrity makeup artist Bruce Grayson, whose clients include Katie Holmes and Sharon Stone, gives us the lowdown on this season’s hot shade, coral—and the right way to use bronzer.—Dawn Shand Johnson What’s the best way to wear the coral look this summer?

Coral is a great color for summer because it looks so fresh. The color brightens the face—alone, as a sheer wash over the top of cheekbones, or it looks fantastic when paired up with a bronze shader under the cheekbone. Try Benefit

Bruce Grayson Solo Artists / Olay

What’s the right way to wear bronzer?

Avoid bronzers with too much shimmer, as they tend to add texture and highlight skin imper-

fections. Instead, use a matte bronzer and medium blush brush to shade your cheeks and jawline. Use a mini flat bronzer brush and round, circular motion to apply a dusting of color over the entire face. I like Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder, which comes in a variety of natural-looking colors.

“During warmer months, brows grow more quickly, so it will be easy to embrace this season’s 1960s ‘California Girl’ look and opt for a fuller, more natural brow.

A clean, well-maintained, classic-shaped brow will brighten and open up the look of your face. Start off by evening your skin tone with a concealer or light liquid foundation; then brush on a tawny-colored blush or bronzer (try my signature powder—it’s smooth and light, just right for summer). Next, if you use a pencil to highlight the brow bone, use either a beige or light-pink pencil, and draw a line directly under the brow along the brow bone, then blend color with a small, firm brush. If you use a cream shadow, apply a few dabs of a light beige or soft pearl shade directly under the arch with your fingertip or a small foundation brush. And remember, never over-tweeze. If you’re not sure what hairs to pull, put the tweezers down. Between visits to a brow specialist, keep your brows under control by tweezing obvious hairs that have grown below the actual brow line and between the eyebrows.” —Karen Scott, brow expert, Karen Scott Cosmetics, 310-553-5126, KarenScottCosmetics.com

SMASHBOX SOLD Adding to its stable of stellar cosmetics brands that include Clinique, Prescriptives, Bobbi Brown, M•A•C, and more, the Estée Lauder Companies Inc. announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics, Inc. The acquisition is expected to close in July 2010, subject to certain conditions. Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics was founded in 1996 by brothers Dean and Davis Factor, great-grandsons of the makeup legend Max Factor. “The Estée Lauder Companies is the ideal home for Smashbox,” said Dean Factor, CEO, Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics, Inc. smashbox.com

NO FAT CELLS A new treatment called Carboxytherapy offers a new weapon in the fight against everything from fat and cellulite to uneven skin tone. It involves the “injection of carbon dioxide, or CO2, in small amounts into the skin and the fat layer beneath the skin,” explains Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour of the Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group. “The presence of carbon dioxide in the tissue stimulates a number of cellular and chemical reactions, including increased vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), which causes more blood flow to the area. In turn, that results in collagen-production stimulation and the breakup of fat cells, which translates to skin tightening and skin color improvement.” Results can become more visible a few days after treatment, and repeat treatments are often required, but bruising and recovery time are minimal. $300–$600 per session, Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group, 8500 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 1020, Beverly Hills, 866-NEW-SELF, perfectself.com

LEAN IT OUT At the Sports Club/LA, and Brentwood’s Burn 60, a new class called Lean It Out is proving to be all the rage among women in their 30s, 40s, and up. “As a 40-something mother of a 6-year-old, I understand the challenges women face as we age,” says instructor Christine Khoury. “To age gracefully and stay fit and beautiful, we just need the tools to find balance in mind and body.” Integrating a variety of techniques Khoury has learned over the years, the class includes ballet movements, Pilates, stretching, and Khoury’s signature core (ab) work; plus, it involves no impact. “We use resistance bands, body weight, and light weights to strengthen and tone, combined with a blast of heavier resistance to really lean you out and get rid of bulk.” Khoury emphasizes beauty and determination. “I don’t allow women to wimp out or give up! I encourage them to feel beautiful and strong. It is a safe environment free of the competition that other gym classes can foster. There is also a mental and nutrition aspect of the class.” The Sports Club/LA, 1835 Sepulveda Blvd, 310-473-1447; Burn 60, Brentwood, 310-476-5656

Catch some rays—or a wave—at these exclusive Southern California resorts. —Shannon L. Bowen A grand escape right in our own backyard, Hotel Casa del Mar is a Santa Monica beachfront resort steeped in history. Founded in 1926 as Club Casa del Mar, a posh beach club and hotel built in the Renaissance Revival style, it was where the glitterati of the day went to kick up their heels and put their toes in the sand. It’s been many things since its early days—a military hotel and a Pritikin Longevity Center, among others—but in 1999, it underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation that restored its ’20s glamour. Now, you can dine al fresco by the property’s plunge pool, pamper yourself silly at the Sea Wellness Spa, and enjoy chef Michael Reardon’s much-loved market-fresh cuisine at Catch Restaurant & Wine Bar—all in an environment that celebrates the history and downright rollicking fun of the Roaring ’20s. From $395. 1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica, 310-581-5533, HotelCasaDelMar.com

A veritable garden by the sea, La Costa Resort & Spa is just 90 minutes south of LA, but it feels like a world away. Whether you’re looking for fun in the sun or just some luxurious R&R, this beautiful Spanish mission–style property will not disappoint. How could it, with 400 acres of amenities? You can spend your day teeing up on its two PGA championship 18-hole courses, working up a sweat on one of its 17 tennis courts, or lounging at one of its eight heated pools or five Jacuzzis. After all that, you’re going to need a visit to the spa. With its 42 treatment rooms, 15,000-square-foot spa courtyard, and famed Chopra Center at La Costa, the Spanish colonial–style Spa at La Costa is the perfect place to rejuvenate both mind and body. The resort also boasts award-winning cuisine—don’t miss the seasonal menu at the BlueFire Grill—and, for the kids, Splash Landing, replete with pools and slides. Low season from $237; high season from $265. 2100 Costa del Mar Rd, Carlsbad, 800-854-5000, lacosta.com

But keep going or you’ll miss the Lobby Lounge, the perfect perch for cocktails at sunset. Hotel eatery One Pico, with views of the boardwalk and the Pacific, is still one of the best restaurants in town—and a superb spot for Sunday brunch, while the pool deck, renovated by sought-after designer Michael S. Resort guests also enjoy access to the Monarch Bay Beach Club, where you can dine on the sand or try your hand at surfing. Golfers will appreciate the 18-hole oceanfront course (the St. Regis is California’s only resort with such a course), and spa aficionados will be delighted with the beautifully appointed Spa Gaucin, which “celebrates life, love and wellness.” And let’s not forget the food! Genlux Out-of-Towner

Bathing suit season. Three words guaranteed to douse your carefree, summertime vibe with a big splash of cold water—unless you’ve discovered designer Melissa Odabash, whose two-piece suits Vogue declared “the Ferraris of the bikini world.” A former runway and swimwear model, Odabash rebelled against the “hideous” looks she had to wear. (“When I was about 8, my mother used to wake me up to watch all the European fashion shows, and I used to comment on how I would change the lengths and styles,” she recalls.) Determined to do better, she crafted some bikinis by hand and shopped them around Milan. Soon after, she conquered the Victoria’s Secret catalogue, which counted her zebra-print bikini as its best-seller. ¶ Odabash doesn’t rely on heavy padding or over-the-top embellishments to create a sexy bathing suit; instead, she uses choice lingerie materials and smart, wearable cuts, and replaces the underwire with fine twisted elastic. Like one of Odabash’s fashion icons, Sophia Loren, the result is “classic, sophisticated, and incredibly chic”—and most of all, flattering…which is what every woman wants when stepping out and baring all. ¶ And Odabash hasn’t stopped there. She’s also glammed up iconic brand Speedo for its 75th anniversary, introduced a sleek ready-to-wear collection, and earned raves with her must-have beachwear line of caftans and cover-ups. Suddenly, it’s summertime, and the living is easy… —Shannon L. Bowen Rowena floor-length empire-waist caftan with drawstring, $370, odabash.com
