A couple of days prior to our photo shoot with Jessica, we called Ms. Alba’s office to see if she’d like us to send a limo to shuttle her to and from the location. In less than divaesque fashion she said she would drive herself to the shoot. And even less primadiva than even that, she drove up in her own Toyota Prius. While not the getaway vehicle one would expect of such a superstar, I applaud her consideration of the environment. And as gas prices soar, it certainly makes more sense to pour money into a new pair of Bally platforms by Brian Atwood than a few tanks of petrol. We also didn’t receive a long laundry list of diva demands from Jessica either. On the contrary, she had no special requests. So then I thought, At the shoot, at the shoot! That’s where the diva will rear her ugly head. But even here, she was sweet as pie. Finally, when lunch came, catered by Sur Restaurant, I held my breath. Surely this is where she’ll have a meltdown about the food. Doesn’t every preggo deserve her quirks when food is involved? But all Jessica had to say was, “Thank you! Sur is one of my favorite restaurants. Gee, why didn’t I shoot for Genlux before?” Ladies, Jessica is definitely no diva. Switch gears. It’s time to slather on some Kate Somerville SPF30, put the top down on your MercedesBenz SL63 (if you’re so lucky), and drive off into the warm sunset. Or better yet, drive over to where I always hear the angels sing—why Neiman’s of course, to pick up some cute summer dresses. Leave your car in valet and stroll a half block up Bedford to Angelina’s on Bedford for some frozen yogurt with fresh strawberries (I love the décor in there, and I like their yogurt better than Pinkberry’s). Still feeling a little naughty for leaving your car in valet? Good. Now walk just a few doors north to Anastasia’s for your brows, then across the street to my favorite sunglass shop, Dan Deutsch Optical for the latest frames from Tom Ford. Dan and Ignacio are brilliant at helping to pick out the best summer frames to fit your beautiful face. I’m always in and out of there in 15 minutes and have never regretted a purchase.

Back at home, it’s time to swap out your Frette terry robes for the waffle ones and go lounge by the pool. Load your iPod with Hôtel Costes volume 8 or 9 and peruse your new copy of Genlux magazine. Ahhh summer!

I’d like to thank our wonderful friends and advertisers who were kind enough to gift our cover girls and models. Here are some that gifted Jessica Alba and Catt Sadler: ABS, Amatokin, Apothia by Ron Robinson, Aquage, Black Halo, Calidora Spa, Chaya, Der madoctor, Fruits to Remember, La Prairie, Libertas, Michael Stars, Moncalin Plush, Phyto/ Lierac, Privé Salon, Pure Hapa, Sur Restaurant, and Three Dots.

My family has been in the investment business for the better part of the last century. My grandfather, Henri de la Chapelle, was an early partner at Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis. My grandfather, Rudolph Eichler, founded Bateman Eichler & Co. in 1929. My father, Peter Eichler Sr., became chief executive of Bateman Eichler in the 1970s. I worked on the floor of the NYSE, developed investment products for E.F. Hutton and launched a money management division for Bear Stearns. To say that I have worked in this business my entire life is not an overstatement. My forbears taught me that to be a successful investor one must be an independent thinker. At Aletheia, we have always done our own research. Another important family trait I have incorporated is common sense in terms of valuation, risk and return expectations. I also believe common sense guides the amount of effort needed to achieve superior results. It takes an incredible amount of time and effort to add value in today’s challenging financial markets. At Aletheia we have combined a rich heritage, creative thinking and a tireless work ethic. We look forward to hearing from you. Peter J. Eichler, Jr. Founder, Chairman, CEO

I usually wear bright colors in the summer. But this year I’m in the mood for animal prints—especially leopard prints (must be my African roots suddenly emerging from nowhere). Or could it be that my mind’s already planning my South African vacation toward the end of the year? In any case, one of my favorite items right now is the Tuleh sheer blouse with the flower embellishment on the front—so darling! (see my Editor’s Picks, p. 98) The ultimate sophistication when paired with wide-leg pants. A John Hardy flower ring is so perfect for nighttime. It has a secret compartment to pour in your favorite perfume, so you can leave your bottle at home. That’s one item out of the bag! I’m going to Capri once again this summer, only this time I’ve promised myself not to over-pack. Just taking the essentials! A pair of white wide-leg pants, my jeans (can’t leave my J Brands behind), a couple of tees, my Trina Turk swimsuit, a couple of light dresses… wait, I already have two suitcases full. I need help! Maybe I should take some advice on how to pack light from a few of the best stylists in LA (p. 120)

I hope you love seeing Jessica Alba on our cover! She’s so sweet, humble and extremely beautiful inside and out. She’s my favorite so far. On a personal note, I’m saddened by the passing of Yves Saint Laurent. He was such an icon. I remember growing up seeing this intricate logo everywhere in my mother’s bedroom. It was on her perfume bottles, inside her clothes, her shoes, even on some of her jewelry. For several years I wondered, “Who is this mystery man who gives all these clothes to my mother?” Until one day, when I was around 10, modeling for a Benetton fashion show in Paris, I finally saw him. I will never forget that day! His unmatched genius revolutionized the world of fashion, and he will be missed. Like all the masters of this world, his legacy will live on.

BEAUTY escape How about this statistic? Up to 60% of what goes on our skin is absorbed--so what we put on our bodies is as important as what goes in them. That’s why it’s so beneficial to go organic whenever possible. You might also want to know that mineral and organic makeups are not the same. Mineral makeup has components that are good for you, but they’re not all natural or organic. Try to avoid parabens, the preservatives that act as binders in cosmetics. –Joanna Schlip

ALBA,BABY.

J

essica Alba is beautiful. That much we all know. And unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you also know that she’s expecting her first child with husband Cash Warren. But there’s a lot more to Alba than what meets the eye. Who knew she’d rather be a cut-up than a pin-up? And then there’s that lunch order that makes even pickles and ice cream seem tame. Alba meets me for this interview at Sur Restaurant in a most un-Hollywood manner: dressed down and exactly on time. No tattooed belly bursting out of a barely-there “maternity” outfit. Instead, she looks completely relaxed and unfazed and wears a simple Juicy Couture top and dark pants. She definitely looks pregnant—but still glamorous. “I’m wearing a lot of Juicy because of the empire waists, and it works whether you’re a size extra-small or extra-large,” she says. And don’t

bother gifting her with a pair of those jeans with the elastic panel. “Pregnancy jeans just do not feel good. Tight everywhere…I hate being uncomfortable! Comfort’s always number one with me.” And then there’s the food. Other than not being able to stand the smell of truffles, Alba says she hasn’t had any odd pregnancy cravings or aversions. But when the waiter comes around, she orders a fruit platter (continued on page 77)

By Marsha Takeda-Morrison (continued from page 74) with a side of Brussels sprouts. “I know,” she says with a laugh. “It’s a weird combination!” So how does an A-lister like Alba escape from the daily grind? Unlike the rest of young Hollywood, her downtime doesn’t involve a nightclub prowl with a posse of friends. “I like the beach. As desolate as possible,” she says. “No people, quiet, no footprints. Just sand and water.” But that’s not to say she’s averse to a little TLC. “I make more of an effort to pamper myself since I’ve gotten pregnant, because it’s kind of the only thing I can really do for myself.” Alba has made her name playing enticingly dark characters, from a troubled exotic dancer in Sin City to a genetically altered soldier in James Cameron’s post-apocalypse TV series Dark Angel. So it comes as a surprise that the one thing she’s always wanted to do is comedy. “I love Gilda Radner, Lucille Ball, Goldie Hawn,” she says. “I love making people laugh. It’s one of the reasons I started in this business when I was really young. I just never got a shot at doing it.” Not until now, that is. Alba finally gets to try her hand at comedy in Paramount’s upcoming The Love Guru, in which she stars opposite Mike Meyers. Alba plays a hockey-team owner who seeks out the services of Meyers’ hippie love guru in order to find what’s ailing her star player. She even brought her own interest in Eastern philosophies to the role. “I dabbled in Eastern spirituality— it totally makes sense to me,” she says. “Eastern religion makes you directly responsible for your actions. It feels like more of a direct path.” When it comes to early fashion influences, she’s quick to mention a ’90s movie starring a sitcom regular—a Married with Children regular, at that. “I loved Christina Applegate in Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead,” Alba enthuses. “She was seventeen and working in fashion.” And who influences her now? “Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren. Not frilly, and not overly sexy and in your face. More subtle, with a beautiful dress and a beautiful silhouette instead of the shortest or the lowest-cut thing.” But being pregnant has change Alba’s everyday style. “I feel like I’m more feminine. Where I usually wear jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers, that

doesn’t work at all being pregnant. I’m probably a little more edgy in my day-to-day when I’m not pregnant. Usually I like to wear a lot of men’s clothes and mix it up, but now I just tend to wear dresses.” Despite being practically a permanent fixture on Maxim’s Hot 100 list and having been FHM’s Sexiest Woman in the World for 2007, Alba is much more interested in impressing her younger audience than her admiring male fans. “I never put myself in those magazines; they put me in them,” she says. “I never really cared about it, to be honest.” Instead, she reserves her enthusiasm for her recent Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Favorite Movie Actress Award. “I love kids! I’ve always loved kids, and I’ve chosen to be in movies like Fantastic Four, where I’m playing a superhero and I get to become that for them. It’s great to be this iconic figure that’s not Barbie or Bratz, but strong and opinionated and sensitive and maternal.” But if you’re casting Fantastic Four XV, leave her kids out of it. Alba’s been in front of a camera since she was a child and had her first steady gig, on Nickelodeon’s The Secret World of Alex Mack, when she was only 13, but would she want her own child to go into show business? “No! Hell, no! Absolutely not,” she says. “The life that I had, it was for a reason. There was nothing else for me to do. There was something that I saw at a very young age, and there was a reason why I made such a bold decision early on. My kids are going to grow up really differently, with a lot more opportunities, especially educational opportunities and a different kind of financial stability that I just didn’t have. “I’m going to push school and art. If they decide at the end of the day that they want to be in the business, then they’ll just be that much more rich in culture and knowledge and prepared to really do something that’s significant instead of, ‘Oh, I’m just doing it because my mom and dad are doing it.’” Not that following in Alba’s footsteps would be a bad thing. Glamorous and down-to-earth, serious and funny, adults love her, but so do their kids— why, she could probably even get them to eat their Brussels sprouts. G

editor at large’S pickS Get out there and enjoy the summer! —George Blodwell

It feels so good to be alive and to relish all the wonder around me! Summer’s here, and it’s time to enjoy beach picnics, lying by the pool, sailing, garden parties, traveling with friends and loved ones, and even—dare I say it—getting a bit of color on our bods. As I flit about our wonderful city looking for the latest and greatest in style and fashion, I’m delighted to hear from cognoscente just how much they love Genlux. It is, after all, the only exclusively fashion and beauty magazine to come out of Southern California. For this issue I’ve chosen a few hot items worthy of your attention. –George Blodwell Peace Monocle Magnifier. Around Oscar time I could be spotted proudly wearing my peace symbol magnifying monocle. In fact, it’s been a blessing because my reading glasses frequently elude me, and with this peace piece around my neck I can quickly see who’s calling my cell, or read the menu at my favorite trattoria without the dismay of realizing that my glasses are in my car or at home on the desk. It’s great to be stopped by all the kids saying they love my peace sign. Hyperbaric Chambers. Recently I escorted one of my friends to a Santa Monica skin clinic where the doctor was enthusiastic to offer his hyperbaric post-procedure, raving about its ability to accelerate the healing process. Wanting to find out more, I visited Global Hyperbaric in Beverly Hills. After my first treatment, my skin looked better—practically glowing. And my sleep had improved. The second or third time around my allergies actually disappeared! Of course, I’m not the only one privy to this treatment; I personally know two superstars who are chambering with amazing results. The chamber can even be brought to your home, office, or movie set.

Cellulite can be your worst enemy, especially during bathing-suit season. While there are no magical cures, increasing circulation to the affected areas by using a body scrub can help to decrease cellulite’s unsightly appearance. Plus, exfoliating with a body scrub is a must before applying self-tanner, as it helps to even out the color of the product, resulting in a natural all-over glow. Do double duty with these sweet-smelling body scrubs. Thom Fleming Mochanilla Body Scrub contains pure Dead Sea salts and pure vitamins. $28, Avalon Hotel, 310-277-5221; thomflemingskincare.com

Dr. Forouzanpour on Cellulite

The lumpiness of cellulite is caused by fat deposits that push and distort the connective tissues beneath the skin. 90% of post-adolescent women go on to develop cellulite. The causes of cellulite are poorly understood and could possibly be due to heredity, skin thickness, gender, the amount and distribution of body fat, age, race, hormonal factors, diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking. There aren’t any miracle products, treatments, or medicines that can make it go away; however, eating a healthy diet and keeping muscles toned by regularly exercising to reduce body fat seem like reasonable approaches to keeping the body as taut and smooth as it can be. While the FDA has approved massage and combined laser/massage therapies, these costly and time-consuming treatments are approved only for a temporary decrease in the appearance of cellulite and require ongoing treatments to maintain any effect. —Dr. Forouzanpour, Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group, 8500

Exfoliate: “For optimal results, exfoliate your skin before spray-tanning or self-tanning.” Moisturize: “Moisturizing is key prior to tanning! Always remember to moisturize a bit more on dryer regions, such as elbows, knees, hands, and feet. When choosing a moisturizer, make sure the ingredients are water-based instead of oil-based. Oily moisturizers may inhibit the spray tan or self-tanner from penetrating the skin.” Avoid water: “An important tip for those who spray-tan or self-tan is to avoid getting the skin wet—showering, swimming, even perspiring—for four hours after being sprayed.” A couple of don’ts prior to spray-tanning: “Don’t wear deodorant; don’t wear makeup.”

Cartier is rolling out its third annual LoveDay festivities to the sound of music on June 19, with guest DJs spinning in its boutiques in all major U.S. cities, including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Beverly Hills; a fresh set of LoveCharity bracelet ambassadors—each one a music industry heavy-hitter; and of course, the jeweler’s latest line of the charity bracelets. Each bracelet intertwines miniature Love bracelets—one in 18K white gold and another in 18K pink gold—accented with two signature screw motifs, and features a luxurious, knotted-silk cord available in a variety of colors, each supporting a different philanthropic cause. A well-known supporter of the arts, Cartier has reached out to eight of the recording industry’s most sought-after talents to represent the new LoveCharity line: Janet Jackson, Fergie, Good Charlotte, Eve, Common, Hilary Duff, Emmy Rossum, and Ashanti. “Cartier is thrilled to have the support of such inspirational celebrities who have joined together to raise awareness for important charitable causes,” says Frederic de Narp, president and CEO, Cartier North America. Cartier aims to surpass last year’s donations as new brand ambassadors join the effort and are eager to make a difference. Over the last two years, Cartier has donated more than $2.24 million to sixteen global charities, including The Art of Elysium, which seeks to enrich the lives of artists and critically ill children. Founder Jennifer Howell sings the praises of Cartier’s Love Charity program: “The 2007 Cartier Love initiative not only helped us reach nearly 20,000 hospitalized children in the greater Los Angeles area, but the money raised from the campaign was designated to the expansion of our self-esteem program for girls, Girl Talk.” This year’s bracelet ambassadors support a wide variety of charities: Janet Jackson’s cause is the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (gunmetal cord), Fergie for The Peapod Foundation (orange), Good Charlotte for The Richie Madden Children’s Foundation (deep-jade-green), Eve for Women in

Transition (peach), Common for The Common Ground Foundation (khaki), Hilary Duff for Blessing in a Backpack (purple), Emmy Rossum for Susan G. Komen for the Cure (pink), and Ashanti for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (royal blue). “I want to contribute new programs to keep kids looking forward to and focusing on their future,” says Ashanti. “I also want to bring programs that appeal to girls just as much as the guys. I am really excited! It’s so important to instill values and goals in our children early so they want to have a better future filled with opportunities and choices.” Since Cartier introduced the iconic Love bracelet more than thirty years ago, it has become the ultimate symbol of love and commitment to a thriving relationship. In the summer of 1969, a romantic young Cartier designer named Aldo Cipullo conceived the bracelet, insisting that upon its launch, it only be sold to couples. Posh celebrity pairs such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen, and Nancy and Frank Sinatra visited Cartier’s Fifth Avenue boutique, where they locked up their love and formally exchanged the tiny screwdrivers that fasten the bracelets. The widespread popularity of the Love bracelet inspired an entire collection, including rings, cufflinks, earrings, and in 2006, the LoveCharity line. During the LoveDay celebration, all bracelet ambassadors who have participated in the LoveCharity initiative since its 2006 launch will have their bracelets available and ready to lock on. Ambassadors from previous years include Sarah Jessica Parker for UNICEF (blue), Eva Mendes for The Art of Elysium (navy), Usher for New Look Foundation (gold), and Rihanna for Believe (sea-foam green), to name a few. For every LoveCharity bracelet sold, $200 will be donated to its corresponding charity. And since there’s plenty of love to go around, 10% of Love collection sales made during the LoveDay celebration will be donated to partnered organizations. How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you? Well, I’m

What shoes do you bring? Hmm… the Miu Miu wooden-heel platform, Steve Madden gladiator sandal, Christian Louboutin rope-wood platform (a steal at $450), John Galliano platforms in pink, and Dries von Noten pumps. What handbags? I have this Jimmy Choo coral leather messenger bag—I love it! What’s your favorite item this season? That’s sooo hard. It’s like asking which puppy I love more! Our children could keep each other entertained while we enjoy some well-deserved time off from all her red-carpet appearances! What’s your favorite place to escape to? My pool at home in Los Angeles with my phone nowhere to be seen—and Europe in the summer to see family and old friends. I left my hometown, London, in the nineties, and I have to get my fix of culture and inspiration whenever I can slip away from the crazy pace of celebrity red-carpet dressing! I’m dreaming of more trips to Asia, South America, and Africa, and I’m fascinated with the evolution of Dubai. What do you pack? As little as possible so I have a good excuse to shop! I love searching for unique, special things when I travel. What three items can’t you leave behind? These are my staples: Tom Ford sunglasses, my Pucci sundress, and my gold-flecked straw sun hat. How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you? Lately I’ve been wearing these fabulous silk dresses by Issa.

My favorites have colorful, graphic florals that are perfect for day or night. I just add accessories, a fun lipstick, a clutch bag, and I’m ready! What shoes do you bring? My Christian Louboutin red espadrilles for day, Roger Vivier gold flats for shopping and museum trips, my Jimmy Choo 120mm bronze crystal sandals for dancing, and Mary Norton jeweled flats for when my feet need a glamorous rest. What handbags? Let’s not forget travel luggage! A very chic Louis Vuitton roll-on that I bought on my last trip to London that matches my vintage set, my Bvlgari huge ivory tote, which is great for the beach, a Roger Vivier white python buckle bag for day, my YSL zebra clutch, and a Judith Leiber vintage gold clutch for evening. My clients value my discretion, so all I can say is that if you notice anyone who looks really great without ever looking like they’re trying too hard, they might be one of my clients.

If you could take one of them on vacation with you, who would it be, and why? I’ve

had a teacher for 35 years; he was 13 when I met him. He’s my spiritual teacher (to limit his title). To me, he’s the most significant person on the planet. His title is Maharaji, though his given name is Prem Rawat. No one could come close to impressing me like this being. Of course my favorite traveling partner would be my son, James, but if you’re referring to my clients, Annie Lennox would be second. She has a beautiful soul.

If you could take one of them on vacation with you, who would it be, and why? As far as

Kate Somerville Protect SPF 30, with UVA / UVB, $35, katesomerville.com

What’s your favorite place to escape to?

It’s a tie between Tahiti and Hanalei Bay in Kauai, Hawaii. What would you pack? A couple of pairs of drawstring linen pants, a pair of jeans, and a pair of black pants and a few cotton white shirts with my favorite Dior tie for night. I’d take a lightweight black jacket and a few black Ts. Persol sunglasses. What are three items can’t you leave behind? My son. My computer. My credit cards. What are your travel essentials? A bathing suit

from Dolce, some great reading material, like The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Kate Somerville skincare and her wonderful sunblock.

de Grisogono Doppio watch, $54,000, degrisogono.com

How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you? Black

pants with a beautiful Helmut Lang belt, a white shirt, and my de Grisogono Doppio watch. For a woman client’s day-to-night look, I would have her pack a black dress, some colorful shoes and jazz it up with some nice jewelry or funk it up with some local jewelry with beads and shells! How many pairs of shoes do you bring?

Three or four: black and gray Cesare Paciotti shoes, Ferragamo or Tod’s slip-on loafers, and a nice Italian sandal from D Squared. How many bags or handbags? I bring a nice distressed leather bag by Marc Marmel. He makes these amazing distressed leather numbers. His bags look like they’ve been around a hundred years. David Beckham was running all over Europe with them. Marc Marmel Herman bag, $1265, Antoinette, Santa Barbara, 805-969-1515

whom I would bring on an island, I am so fortunate to really get along with everyone I work with. The intensity of award shows and publicity can strain a relationship, so it’s important that we share a strong friendship and that my client have a great deal of trust in me. Most of my clients are actually some of my dearest friends, so I would have trouble choosing one. What’s your favorite place to escape to? Hawaii, the big island—because it’s a quick flight to escape from civilization. What would you pack? Pucci bikini and scarves. Leonard silk dresses—the wrinkles fall right out. Any Sari Gueron or Isabel Marant dresses or individual pieces; they’re all perfect for dinner dates with my husband. Linen shorts and Ray-Ban aviators. What three items can’t you leave behind? My husband and twin daughters, Zoey and Sydney.

what are you buying?

Genlux’s Shannon L. Bowen discusses all things shopping with the chic women behind some of LA’s top restaurants. WHO: Cindy

Choi, marketing manager, Chaya & Associates (Chaya & M Café restaurants), Beverly Hills SHOPPER ID: My style is very versatile, and I love mixing vintage with a modern twist. I usually know what I want when I go shopping, and I hate trying on clothes in shops. WHERE ARE YOU SHOPPING? I’m addicted to online shopping! I always check out shopbop.com and revolveclothing.com; however, since I work right off of trendy Robertson Boulevard, it’s hard not to be tempted by shops like Intermix, Madison, and Diavolina. I also love walking around Third Street [in Los Angeles] and checking out boutiques like Satine, Hillary Rush, and Milk. WHAT ARE YOU BUYING LATELY? This season I’m trying to bring more color to my wardrobe, like bright silk dresses from Myne that I can wear to everything from business meetings to happy hours with the girls. I also love young, up-andcoming designers like Nuj Novakhett, Crispin & Basilio, and Beckerman. As for accessories and jewelry: CHANEL! Always CHANEL! And I love BIG black rings or pieces from Made Her Think. HIDDEN TREASURES: Two words: sample sales! I’m fortunate enough to live in LA, where so many designers such as Rachel Pally, Black Halo, and Rock & Republic open up their showrooms and warehouses for bargain hunters like me. I just bought a gorgeous classic silk blouse at the Guy Baxter sample sale, and I love it that much more because I didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it. I’ve even scored great one-of-akind pieces. ACCESSORY FAVE I CRAVE: A girl can never have enough bags. I like to splurge on one fabulous piece once a year. Right now, I have my eye on a big woven-leather tote bag that’ll be perfect for work as well as weekends.

WHO: Nathalie Pouille-Zapata, co-owner, Sur Restaurant, West Hollywood SHOPPER ID: I consider myself a bargain hunter. I love to mix trendy designer pieces (especially accessories) with local designer clothes. I love to bring back exotic pieces from my trips to Buenos Aires, Playa del Carmen, and of course, Paris! WHERE ARE YOU SHOPPING? Can’t miss a Billion Dollar Babes sample sale; love Barneys and Maxfield Bleu. WHAT ARE YOU BUYING LATELY? Just got a pair of Louis XVI armchairs at the Rose Bowl Flea Market—can’t wait to stipple them up in black paint and cover them up in a rich lilac velvet. Also, a chartreuse Chloé dress at Wasteland for less than $100. ACCESSORY FAVE I CRAVE: I love sunglasses. They help everyone to be glamorous even on a “not so good” morning. I am running right now to get myself a pair of “Whitney” by Tom Ford. Tom Ford Whitney HIDDEN TREASURE: Just fell in love with Kiki de frames, $360, Dan Montparnasse on Melrose—the design of the Deutsch Optical, store and garden is so inviting, and you just Beverly Hills, want to buy (almost) everything!

I love the shoe collections from Sergio Rossi, Madison, metal clutch, $3725, Christian and Christian Louboutin, David Yurman jewelry, Nancy Gonzalez bags, Ferré blouses, Etro coats, and Armani blazers. gENLUXshop WhO: Brooke Mueller, real estate investor, philanthropist WHere are you heading on your summer getaway?

Palm Beach, Florida. It’s where I grew up, so I’m very familiar with it and feel very much at home there. It’s the best place to spend summers, and I always try to go back whenever I can to see family and friends. Where do you stay?

With my family! My parents and little sister still live there and have a great place right on the ocean. It always feels good to be at home. However, now that I’m getting married, The Breakers or Mar-a-Lago might be more appropriate. What do you TAKE with you in your carry-on?

I can’t travel without my iPod. I always have to stop in the airport gift shop and get a paperback book and magazines and chocolate. I’ve been trying my best to remember the rule about “no fluids over three ounces.” The last time I forgot, it was a nightmare, and I had to re-check all my cosmetics and almost missed my flight. Do you tend to over-pack or under-pack?

I always over-pack, but I’m trying to get better with that. I don’t know why it is, but I always feel the need to pack all my new favorite clothes, even though I end up wearing the same outfit the entire time.

What’s your Palm Beach look?

I grew up always running out of the house to the beach with my friends, so I’m usually in a sundress, floppy hat, sandals, and big sunglasses. It’s fast and easy to put on, and I don’t have to worry about my hair or makeup.

Ferragamo sunglasses, $335, Sunglass Hut, sunglasshut.com

What kind of swimsuit do you wear?

I’ve always worn a two-piece bathing suit. My current favorite bikini is by Eres. I have a few of them in different colors. What’s in your beach bag?

Pretty much the same as in my carry-on bag, except with a towel. My airport gift shop book and magazines, my iPod, and of course sunblock SPF30. What’s your favorite thing to do on vacation?

There is nothing more relaxing for me than lying out in the sun and reading a book. Don’t get me wrong—I can also spend hours in the spa. I’m addicted to massage! So they’re both great.” Fortunately, even if you can’t have Wearstler redesign your entire home or office, you can still incorporate a bit of her cosmopolitan aesthetic into your life—and you only have to go as far as Bergdorf Goodman, where she launched a home-accessories boutique this past fall. What’s more, earlier this year, she introduced an eight-piece

Never content to rest of her laurels, Wearstler also has her eye on the fashion world and plans to pursue her own clothing line, which she says will “translate the rich colors and incredible details that The are my take on interiors” into apparel. “I want to eventually Mykonos have freestanding stores that would house the fashion, the Box, $995, accessories, and the furniture—the whole look.” Considering her grand plans and already grand achievements, it’s safe to say that Wearstler deserves an escape of her own, and for that, she chooses Asia. “There are so many different places in Asia I absolutely love,” she says. “From Japan, to Vietnam, to Thailand— it’s the culture, it’s the design, it’s the people, it’s the cuisine, it’s everything.” Indeed, even a casual glance reveals the importance of Asian culture and design to Wearstler’s style. And considering the raves her projects have drawn, fans and clients alike should hope that this year, the hard-working Wearstler makes plenty of time for a summer vacation of her own.

Hotly pursued purses and a brand-new clothing line in the works—Rebecca Minkoff’s got it all in the bag. BY shannon bowen

Some people have all the luck. Some have a great work ethic. Some have a knack for seizing opportunities. A lucky few have all three, and Rebecca Minkoff is one of them. It all began in 2001, when she cut up a T-shirt like artisans do in the Caribbean and gave it to her sister-in-law. “I did that to an ‘I Love New York’ shirt,” Minkoff recalls. “My sisterin-law wore it out to dinner, and she was eating dinner with Jenna Elfman, who’s a family friend. Jenna was like, ‘I love it,’ so I made her one. I sent it to her on September 9, 2001, and she got it on the 12th.” That was a fateful week: One would be hard-pressed to find a person who doesn’t know what happened between those two days. The next thing Minkoff knew, Elfman was wearing the ‘I Love New York’ shirt on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Leno was saying how much he liked it, and Elfman was telling a national audience, “Thanks, it’s Rebecca Minkoff.” “It started this huge thing,” Minkoff says. “For eight months I made these shirts—just in my apartment.” Minkoff, a Southern California native who learned to sew at the age of 8, had already had some success with her own clothing line. But it was with handbags that her brand would achieve new heights. And again, Elfman would be the catalyst. It was 2004, and the two were having dinner. “I’m doing a movie, and a bag is part of my character; it’s a really important part of the role. Will you design me a bag?” Elfman asked Minkoff. “I took that The Morning After opportunity—I had no idea how to do this or what I Mini in Persimmon, was going to do—and I told her yes,” Minkoff says. $550, shopbop.com “I didn’t tell her I didn’t know what I was doing!”

Minkoff did some research, found a vintage bag she liked, came up with some ways to make it her own, and took it to a leather store in New York. The store charged her “an obnoxious amount of money—I didn’t know it was obnoxious at the time,” she says with a rueful laugh. She had two samples made: one for Elfman and one for herself. But things happen: the bag didn’t end up in the film, and the film didn’t end up in theaters. Minkoff’s sample, however, caught the eyes of passersby on the street, and she decided to seize the day. She’d always wanted to do bags, she says, so she took that as a sign. At the time, Minkoff’s longtime friend Ilaria Urbinati was the buyer for Satine and a writer for Daily Candy. Between the boutique and the blog, that bag, the cheekily named “The Morning After Bag,” became famous in its own right. It’s since been seen on the arm of every Hollywood starlet from Lindsay Lohan to Jessica Alba to Jessica Simpson, and it’s still Minkoff’s most popular bag. But it’s not remotely her only bag. There’s the Nikki, the Steady, and the Market, among others, as well as a new addition, the French Tote—“Our theme for that bag is Paris and traveling,” she explains—and Minkoff and Urbinati are set to launch a new clothing line in February. Minkoff looks poised to seize the day—again. And luck has nothing to do with it. Rebecca Minkoff handbags are available at Bloomingdale’s, 59th Street, NY; Neiman Marcus, Short Hills, NJ; Saks Fifth Avenue, 5th Avenue, NY; and Fred Segal, Santa Monica and LA. rebeccaminkoff.com

gENLUXshop BRINGING GLAMOUR BACK With a brand-new Sunset Plaza boutique and a sophisticated eyewear collection at Ilori in Beverly Hills, couture kings Badgley Mischka are raising the bar for everyday luxury in LA. BY shannon bowen

Mark Badgley and James Mischka

Some things just go together, like guts and glory, risk and reward, fame and fortune. In LA, we have our own uniquely matched pairs—some for the worse, like cars and congestion, and some for the better, like sun and sand. This spring, we welcomed back a beautifully matched pair, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, whose former Rodeo Drive store has been sorely missed. With the unveiling of their opulent two-story boutique at Sunset Plaza and the arrival of their eyewear collection at posh Beverly Hills eyewear emporium Ilori, Badgley and Mischka are back in town, and as always, they’ve brought glamour with them. “The Badgley Mischka woman has always been about timeless glamour and elegance,” says Badgley. “She’s a woman who appreciates fabrics and a little bit of vintage, and likes to indulge herself, and loves quality and luxury.” Badgley Mischka’s luxe looks fill a certain void in the city’s fashion landscape, because while Hollywood and glamour have always been synonymous, Los Angeles is known as much for tracksuits and tank Fall 2008 tops as it is for red-carpet couture. Platinum Sportswear top, $198; skirt, $368; jacket, $568, Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, 310550-5900

“Life’s become so casual,” Badgley says. “But we find that there’s still a novelty for a woman who loves to get dressed up. Even younger girls who grew up with sportswear and very casual kinds of clothes—we’re finding more than ever that they love to buy a beautiful evening dress or beautiful cocktail dress and put on something that feels really special.” The glamour of the Badgley Mischka brand is a lifestyle as well as a look, and the designers’

expansion beyond eveningwear and bridal into areas such as readyto-wear, home, fragrance, fine jewelry, and eyewear makes the label as much about everyday life as a night on the town. “It’s about glamour and luxury in every day,” says Mischka. “Eyewear is a perfect example, because you can be so glamorous so easily with a pair of sunglasses. You can look very utilitarian, or you can look glamorous and sophisticated.” But glamour and sophistication come from more than just appearances. A true luxury brand, Badgley Mischka has always been devoted to quality and detail (witness its signature beadwork and embroidery), and its Couture Eyewear and Active Eyewear lines are no exception. Looking to partner with an eyewear expert as devoted to quality as they are, the designers turned to Sama Eyewear’s Sheila Vance, who had met them as a customer years before. “She’s so into couture details and quality; she doesn’t take any shortcuts,” Badgley says. “She’s just a dream of a partner.” The result of their collaboration is dreamy indeed, with such fine details as feathers, pearls, and Swarovski crystals. It’s classic Badgley Mischka and just right for adding a touch of glamour to one’s everyday look—even, if you must, to a tracksuit. Badgley Mischka Couture Eyewear Amanda frames in Pearl, $445, Ilori, Beverly Hills, 310-860-0634

gENLUXshop On the road again

It’s summertime, and you’ve got places to go and people to see. Here are some of the season’s to-diefor destinations, and of course, objects of desire. – Shannon Bowen You’ve traveled halfway around the world, and you could just hop off the plane and wing it, hoping to stumble across that amazing bar you heard about … or was it a bazaar? Or you could get some advice from the experts at Luxe City Guides, stylish pocket-sized guidebooks with real-life advice about the best-of-the-best hotels, shops, and restaurants in destinations like Bali, Paris, Phuket, and Rome. Opt for a Luxe Bespoke Grand Tour Box and fill it with 12 guides of your choice (if you’re staying stateside, look for the just-launched LA and Chicago editions). $110, luxecityguides.com

Nothing adds a hint of luxury to a little black dress or a crisp white shirt like a pair of diamond earrings. But the traditional diamond stud, while always a classic, could use a little update, which is why we adore Philip Press’s two-piece diamond earrings, which have a detachable ring of diamonds—perfect for changing things up. They’re a brilliant piece of travel jewelry: Wear just the studs one night, then the studs with the rings the next, because diamonds really are a girl’s best friend. $1720, Philip Press, 8605 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, 310-360-1189

You’ve had it with the hustle and bustle of LA, and you’re ready for a picturepostcard-perfect getaway, complete with tropical cocktails and island vistas. Happily, the newly renovated Waikiki Parc Hotel, just paces from Waikiki Beach, is offering its Parc Sunrise package, which includes daily breakfast for two and complimentary hotel parking. Lounge at the heated rooftop pool or head down to the beach for some good old-fashioned sun and sand. Twonight minimum stay, fourth night free, deluxe mountain-view room, $265 per night; ocean-view room, $306 per night. 2233 Helumoa Rd, Honolulu, 800-422-0450, waikikiparc.com

The buzzed-about Huntley Santa is right in our backyard, but it feels like a world away. Thomas Schoos is responsible for its elegant, eclectic, and appropriately beachy design (reach out and touch the white-on-white “piranha wall”—we promise it won’t bite— and note the chocolate-brown stingray skin at the reception desk). Each of the hotel’s 209 guest rooms enjoys a gasp-worthy view of the Santa Monica oceanfront, along with creature comforts like 300thread-count Matteo linens and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. But before you venture out of the hotel, venture up: Ride the glass elevator along the building’s façade to the hotel’s crown jewel, the Penthouse restaurant, bar, and lounge, for a world-class meal against the blue backdrop of the Pacific. 1111 2nd St, Santa Monica, 310-394-5454, thehuntleyhotel.com Monica Beach

For all manner of creative types—from producers, directors, and location scouts to photographers and stylists, who need to set just the right scene—top-notch location company Image Locations has all the answers. Check out their Location Swatch, which puts the firm’s myriad locations in the palm of your hand. $79.99, Image Locations, 9663 Santa Monica Blvd, Ste. 842, Beverly Hills, 310-871-8004, imagelocations.com At the sophisticated Thompson Beverly Hills, home of BondSt sushi, there are more than a few super-cool corners to hide out in, like the mezzanine lounge, aka the BondSt Lounge, designed by Christian Schultz of Dodd Mitchell Designs. It’s the perfect retro-chic spot for whiling away the wee hours with a cocktail in hand. 9360 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills, 310-273-1400, thompsonhotels.com

gENLUXshop You’re going on vacation, and the packing madness has begun. Sunblock? Check. Passport? Check. Adorable loungewear from Scanty? Double-check—because as one journalist recently learned, hotel-room doors are very heavy and tend to close behind you when you step outside to dispose of the roomservice tray, and the next thing you know, you’re in the lobby and looking sheepish—unless you’re clad in Scanty’s Neo Flower Child chemise, in which case you might actually turn heads. $70, Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, 310-550-5900; scantyclothing.com

These days, travel is sort of like a triathlon. The first leg is from your front door to the airport. The second is from the curb to your seat on the plane. The flight itself is a distant third. You’re going to need a shot of something to get you to your destination, which is where Java Monster Chai Hai comes in. With imported tea, real cream, and Monster’s energy and spice blend, this is the power-up you need to run the gauntlet of airport security. Monster Energy Java Monster, $2.49, Chai Hai, available at Whole Foods, Beverly Hills, 310-274-3360

Smythson has been creating travel goods since its original store opened on London’s New Bond Street in 1887, and the company’s passport covers, travel wallets, luggage label and myriad other travel accessories have been a mark of luxury and sophistication ever since. Amsterdam’s witty and whimsical fashion duo Viktor & Rolf have struck again, but this time with a bottle of bubbly, literally turning Piper-Heidsieck’s Rosé Sauvage Champagne on its head…ahem, cork. When braving the wilds of LA in the summertime, think sexy, shimmery ’70s safari. —Dawn Shand Johnson Tips for summer from Brett Freedman / Vanitymark Clients include Kelly Clarkson, Rosario Dawson, Carmen Electra, Paris Hilton, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Lucy Liu, Reba McEntire, and Jordin Sparks.

“Cheeks and lips—one word: glaze! Summer is a great time for stains, tints, and glazes. They look so natural and give the skin a ‘health from within’ glow. The big shades this summer are berry or wine shades. If you want to update your lip color, I suggest topping with a fab gold gloss. The gold will warm up the juicy lip color and give it a vibrant sunset feel. For cheeks, it’s all about a dewy finish. I’m a huge fan of creamy blush for the hotter months. It really molds with the skin and gives cheeks a just-pinched perk up. I just did Rosario Dawson for an event and used the combo of a sheer prune glaze topped with gold lip gloss, and it was fab!”

There is a fine line between looking luminous and bouncing off light like a solar panel. On my actresses, I like to use a highlighter to give certain areas a pop. EXPERT OPINION DR. KEST

gENLUXshop

All Over:

FUN IN THE SUN

As the weather starts to heat up, Dawn Shand Johnson asks Dr. Kest what to look for in sun-care products. Are there skin treatments you should stay away from if you’re planning a sunny vacation? Stay away from any laser or light-based treatments. Which treatments are effective for treating sun damage? IPL (intense pulsed light), laser peels, acid peels—you can also use them on your chest and hands.

Noodle and Boo Play-Day Sunscreen SPF30 fights UVA and UVB rays—because babies need sun protection too. $22, noodleandboo.com; Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, 310-550-5900

What level of sunscreen do you suggest? Any level 15 and above. More important than the SPF is how much of the product you put on.

FACE:

Amore Pacific Natural Protector SPF30/PA+++ with Asian botanicals protects against—and helps to reverse—signs of aging. $65, Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, 310-550-5900

How often do you need to reapply sunscreen? Often—every couple of hours, especially if you’re outdoors or in the water.

Prescriptives All Weather Friend Daily UVA/UVB Sun Protection SPF40, with titanium dioxide for broadspectrum UVA/UVB protection. $26.50, prescriptives.com

What’s the difference between “waterproof ” and “water-resistant” when it comes to sun-care products? Waterproof products can last up to 90 minutes in the water, whereas water-resistant products do not last as long. People can become sensitive to waterproof products and may want to use water-resistant ones instead.

Editor’s Pick: SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Combination Antioxidant Treatment contains L-ascorbic acid, alpha tocopherol, and ferulic acid, $135; Active UV Defense Sunscreen Cream with SPF15 is water- and sweat-resistant. $29; drugstore.com; amazon.com

What key ingredients should sunscreen contain? For UVB protection: Padimate O, Homosalate, Octisalate (octyl salicylate), and Octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate). For UVA protection: Avobenzone. For UVA/UVB protection: Octocrylene, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and Mexoryl (ecamsule).

Zia Skin Basics Daily Moisture Screen SPF15 with cucumber is paraben-free and protects against UVA and UVB rays. $20.95, Whole Foods, Beverly Hills, 310-274-3360; zianatural.com RawMinerals Active Veil SPF20, $25, rawnaturalbeauty.com

Nicole Paxson Cosmetics UVA and UVB Makeup offers sheer to heavy coverage Cream Foundation with SPF30, $40.50; bronzer with SPF15, $30.50; concealer with SPF30, $23. The line was created to help women suffering from skin problems and allows for maximum coverage if needed. Nicolepaxson.com

What can be harmful in sunscreen? Octocrylene, octylmethoxycinnamate, and benzophenone-3. These three substances are proven to increase the amount of free radicals and reactive oxygen species in the skin after they have penetrated into it. What’s the difference between UVA and UVB rays? UVA is long-wavelength light; UVB is shorter wavelength. UVB is responsible for direct DNA damage, tanning, burning, and certain types of skin cancer. UVA is absorbed at a deeper level; it causes DNA damage through the production of free radicals in the skin. UVA light is more responsible for collagen breakdown and aging.

What should you look for in sunscreens if you have sensitive skin? Zinc oxide and titanium oxide work great for protection against UVA and UVB rays. Heliocare oral dietary supplement with antioxidant properties that combat the effects of aging and sun exposure add another layer of protection from free radicals. Dr. Kest recommends two pills a day in the summer and one a day in the winter. $60, heliocare.com; thekestclinic.com

with an anti-aging arsenal that includes lasers, needles, peels and more, cindy kokesch treats each patient on a face-by-face basis.

Cindy Kokesch confidently and carefully zips a path across her patient’s face— zapping “trouble” areas as she goes. If you happen to be the fortunate one under her care, this is when you value her aesthetic sensibilities as much as the $50,000 laser she holds steadily over your right eye. Yes, letting someone alter your personal aesthetics is about as personal as it gets. So, as Cindy puts it, “It’s important to find a professional who offers the attention and customized skin-care treatment plan to help maximize your own gorgeous, youthful beauty.” And what are the results of her laser artistry on her priceless canvases? Besides looking younger after a mere 40 minutes through stimulated collagen, smoother skin tone, balanced red and brown discoloration, and tightening of the skin, this amazingly painless laser treatment leaves its patients with a healthy pink glow without unwanted side effects—none. There’s also dramatic improvement in uneven skin texture, pore size, and fineline wrinkles. The bottom line is you’ll probably look younger for your next high school reunion. Cindy’s other aesthetic treatments: laser hair removal, leg vein removal, Botox Cosmetic®, Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and chemical peels. The medical literature is starting to reflect this trend, with a couple dozen studies published now on açai (though there are more than 2,000 papers on resveratrol). The use of these compounds in oral-supplement form remains a bit speculative at this time, though.” —Dr. Richard Baxter, chief medical officer, Calidora Spa

gENLUXshop FLIGHT PATH

One-stop travel shop Flight 001 will have you ready for takeoff—and coming back for more. BY shannon bowen

Flight 001, 8235 W. Third St, Los Angeles, California 90048 Red Eye Pak: Eye mask, earplugs, Jao lip balm, LA Fresh hydrating lotion towelette, dental refresher, Chiclets, and a bookmark, $18 Flight Passport Holder with transparent side pockets and personal data card, $16

“I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” So said Robert Louis Stevenson, who really did move, leaving his native Scotland to venture all over the globe. But Stevenson didn’t have to stuff his cologne and pomade into a plastic bag and walk barefoot through airport security. Today, the inconvenience of flying is enough to send any adventurer in search of something that will restore ease and pleasure to the travel experience. But for the design-savvy traveler, the pickings are slim. There are plenty of iPod cases and over-the-door toiletry bags to be had, but most travel goods are utilitarian at best— unless you’re shopping at Flight 001. Flight 001 (pronounced “flight one”), a one-of-a-kind travel store that carries everything from Samsonite Black Label luggage to peppermint hand sanitizer, is the brainchild of business partners who, while flying from New York to Paris in 1998, decided they’d spent way too much time preparing for their journey.

Point A to Point B but wants to do so in comfort and style—even when it comes to those pesky plastic bags. “We try to be ahead of the new regulations,” John says. “Even when the Ziploc bag thing came into play, we immediately went out to find the coolest Ziploc. And traveling is difficult now, so we’re trying to make it more comfortable, with the blankets and the pillows and the slippers.” Blankets and pillows and slippers indeed: From a 100% natural Scottish cashmere throw that’s lush enough to double as a cozy wrap, to a leopard-print neck rest, to a pair of pink cashmere slippers housed in a silk drawstring pouch, the items on offer at Flight 001 are enough to make you settle in and enjoy the ride. But Flight 001 isn’t just about what it dubs “jet comfort.” It’s also about organization and efficiency, both of which are key to any well-planned getaway.

“Five hours later, it was all pretty much done,” says co-founder Brad John, who, like his Flight 001 partner, John Sencion, has a design background. “Our focus was really to bring a different dimension to travel products. First of all, it was to have everything under one roof, and it was also to appeal to a much more cool customer—you know, like our friends from Seventh Avenue.”

One of the company’s most innovative products is Spacepak, an exclusive packing-bag system that maximizes space and keeps clean clothes separate from dirty laundry. “If someone’s buying luggage, we try to show them the merit of this system. I swear, they all come back to buy more components and to buy for all their friends,” says John. “Once you travel with it, you really do become obsessed.”

The concept took off, and the company now has seven U.S. locations, one in Dubai, and more in the works—all designed like retro airplane cabins.

With Flight 001 obsessing over how to best fulfill your travel needs, you can focus on enjoying yourself. After all, as the saying goes, life is about the journey, not the destination.

Considering how challenging travel has become since Flight 001’s inception, the store is a boon to anyone who needs to get from

Hot Lines: Literature Noir, Chulo Pony, and Green Dragon

Long on fashion and short on attitude, Violetgrace is putting the fun back in shopping. BY shannon bowen

Violetgrace, 7021 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles 90038, 800-540-0018

Tucked away on the up-and-coming stretch of Melrose Avenue just east of La Brea is a charming little shop that’s still a bit of a secret—but it won’t be for long. Violetgrace, with its quaint black-and-white pinstriped awning and elegant but cozy interior (look out for the black crystal chandelier—you’re going to want to take it home) is another sign of the gentrification that’s been happening all over Melrose. “I love this neighborhood, so I wanted to do something here,” says owner Dorit Wolf, a petite brunette powerhouse with an easy laugh, a quick wit, and a voice you could hear above any crowd. “I feel very at home. And it’s also the friendliest neighborhood; all the shopkeepers know each other.” Staying true to the neighborhood’s character, Wolf is taking Violetgrace, which opened in August, in an artsy—but not snooty—direction, hosting shows with works by local artists and decorating the boutique with unusual, original pieces. “I think it would be awesome to have LA designers who nobody knows, and give people a place—a forum—for their art, whatever variety it is,” Wolf says. “A gallery doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.” But even if you can’t tell your Manets from your Monets, the clothes on offer make Violetgrace worth a trip. A quick look around the shop reveals Wolf’s keen eye. There are casual-chic Bibelot cashmere sweaters with leather embellishments, an effortless black sequin cocktail dress from New York’s Walter, and lacy underthings from Flora Nikrooz. There are also must-have James Jeans, flirty little day-toevening sheath dresses from Fluet (perfect for travel), and casual duds by Young Fabulous & Broke.

Doing a quick show-and-tell around the boutique, Wolf— who describes her own personal style as “sexy and a lot of black and gray; my friend just said I look like a Jewish mom going to a funeral”—demonstrates a passion for picking out beautiful pieces. “Literature Noir—it’s such a great name, and it’s such a sexy line!” she enthuses. “And Chulo Pony—they have really awesome, super-interesting stuff. And Green Dragon, which is the best basics line—it’s soft, cottony, just really comfortable loungewear.” But the clothes aren’t the only draw: shopping at Violetgrace is just plain fun. The friendly staff is like the girlfriends you wish you had, happy to lend a hand and give you an honest opinion. In a town rife with uppity salespeople, that’s refreshing. After all, coming out of the dressing room can be hard enough, even without a room full of attitude. Considering Wolf’s take on the boutique business, it’s not a surprise that the vibe at Violetgrace is one of casual camaraderie. “I love fashion, I love clothing,” she says. “I come in, have fun, make the world pretty.” 7021 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038; 800-540-0018; violetgrace.com

Adriana Lima might be the quintessential 21st-century supermodel. She’s got it all: the friendly vivaciousness of the girl next door, the coveted physique of—what else?—a Victoria’s Secret runway star, and an international allure she owes to her multicultural heritage (she’s a native of Brazil, but her ancestry is French, Portuguese, Native American, and Caribbean). Exotic as she might be, however, she is no stranger to American shores. Not only is she one of Victoria’s Secret’s most famous faces (and bodies), Lima has to her credit high-fashion magazine covers, her own fragrance (Secrets), and a major color cosmetics contract with Maybelline. Not surprisingly, she has been photographed by some of the fashion industry’s most famous lensers including Gilles Bensimon, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, and Ellen von Unwerth. She’s even a star on what is arguably one of the most significant measures of fame today, YouTube, where her buzzed-about Victoria’s Secret commercial for Super Bowl XLII has been viewed more than 50,000 times—and counting. –Shannon L. Mac, some DVDs—I love Ugly Betty, so my past few trips were spent watching Season 1. I also love dramas, so I’ll watch any drama on DVD.

Have drinks? Bar Marmont is nice, and so is the Stone Rose Lounge. I also like the restaurant Dominick’s. It’s not a bar, but the bar is relaxed, and the bartenders are wonderful. Get gorgeous? Ona Spa [on Beverly Boulevard in LA] Go for a hike/walk? Venice Beach

ON AND OFF THE PLANE What’s in your carry-on? Plenty of magazines. I always have National Geographic, and it may sound strange, but I love reading the airline magazines— they always have great features on various places, so they’re a super resource to plan a getaway. Queen Helene cocoa butter [hand lotion] is great; it absorbs easily, and it’s natural. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm and Blistex Medicated [lip ointment] in the white tube, not the balm. My iPod, my
