ince it’s officially spring, how about we wear as little clothes as possible? One of the biggest trends this season is shorts. If God has blessed you with gorgeous legs, then it’s your time to shine. I found that the Gucci black lux shorts will make your legs look like Elle MacPherson’s. (page 130) One of my favorite handbags is the Constance Elan by Hermès. (page 26) I have one in every color with the gold-plated H and the silver-plated H! It’s the perfect bag for nighttime. It’s happening again! It’s BritWeek time in Los Angeles! Last year, G enl ux hosted the first annual BritWeek Fashion Designer of the Year Awards and Fashion Show. We brought designer Todd Lynn over from London and gave him our first award and now we’re doing it again! This time, we are honoring luxury fashion designer Matthew Williamson with the award. This brilliant London-based designer is best known for his bright colors and bold prints, and has a long list of celebrity followers. This spring, he launched his new menswear capsule collection. It’s hard to believe that the luxury house of Matthew Williamson opened its first U.S. flagship store in NY only last year. Lucky for us, this is Matthew Williamson’s first fashion show in California. We are extremely proud to

GenLUX be the ones to bring this talented designer’s collection here for you to enjoy. Needless to say, our fashion photographers have done it yet again. Nine brilliant photo features by nine superb photographic teams: Erik Almås, BrakhaX2, (Moshe Brahka and his son, Eddie Brakha), Jeff Licata, Robert Lobetta, Andrew Matusik, Tracy Morris, Melissa Rodwell, Paul Schefz, and Elizabeth Waugh. Due in large part to their efforts, Genlux has become the premiere luxury fashion magazine produced in California. I have to admit, though, one of my favorite photoshoots is the Lydia Hearst cover story. The amazing boys of BrakhaX2, along with one of our favorite stylists, Jessica Paster, did a marvelous job capturing the candid and animated side of Lydia. Next to Linda (Evangelista, of course) Lydia may be the best model at getting right into character. She’s a really sweet, down-to-earth girl. (page 96) Naturally, we’d like to give credit where credit is due, and that rests on our enormously talented team of editors, photographers, stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, and models. I thank all of you.

The spring rains held off just long enough to celebrate the release of the Genlux spring 2010 issue with a party on the penthouse rooftop of the Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive. Guests enjoyed the beautiful white-tented setting while being surrounded by lights of Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills, as well as gorgeous-smelling candles from Apothia by Ron Robinson. The guest list included Angelic Zambrana (Precious), Patrick McDonald (Launch My Line), Kali Hawk (Couples Retreat, Get Him to the Greek), Barbara Lazaroff, Amanda Eliasch, Laura Dunn, Beau Dunn, Nicky Haslam, George Blodwell, Rupert Wainwright, Miss USA Crystle Stewart, and Demet Öger, among others. The 250 guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by the Luxe Hotel Catering, cupcakes by CRUMBS Bakeshop, cocktails from Kröl Vodka and Hansen’s, along with FIJI water, ONE Hope Wine and Ventura Limoncello Liquor. Host Jennifer Missoni drew guest Michelle Williams’ name in a raffle to win a Pythagore necklace from Christofle.

We go behind the scenes to reveal how our creative team achieved Lydia Hearst’s cover look! ANNIE ING WITH CELESTINE AGENCY ON GETTING LYDIA’S LOOK: FOR A MAKEUP ARTIST, THE CHANCE TO MAKE UP LYDIA HEARST IS A DREAM COME TRUE. LYDIA POSSESSES ONE OF THOSE RARE FACES THAT CAN TRANSFORM WELL INTO ANY LOOK.

Her expressive green eyes, high cheekbones and flawless skin inspired the cover look of the modern 60s. For a hint of the past and some drama, I used false eyelashes on top and bottom; then, to bring the look current, I used beautiful beiges and pinks—colors to enhance Lydia’s green eyes and gorgeous skin. 2

Annie Ing Makeup Artist Celestine Agency

EYE: “I used NARS Baby Girl on her eyes. The pink, sparkly flecks bring out the green. On the brow bone, I swept Shu Uemura Beige, which also plays with her great eye color and beautiful skin color. To add the fun 60s element, I used M•A•C false eyelashes. For the bottom lashes, to create that individual-lash look, I glued the lashes inverted. I used LORAC Front of the Line eyeliner just at the corners of the eyes to add a little depth. To finish, I love LORAC mascara. Because of all the soft colors used on her eyes, cheeks and lips, Lydia’s look is fresh and clean— with a hint of 60s-fun false lashes.” LORAC Front of the Line Eyeliner, $22, Sephora, ULTA

Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine, $30, shuuemura.com

LORAC Special Effects Mascara, $22, Sephora

LIP: “The Shu Uemura lip color is also supermoisturizing. The color complements Lydia’s eyes and skin.”

NARS Hungry Heart Highlighting Blush Duo, $39, narscosmetics.com

Shu Uemura Face Powder Sheer Colorless, $33, shuuemura.com

FACE: “To prep Lydia’s skin for makeup, I used Sircuit

Skin’s Molecular Mist. It super-moisturizes and plumps, and is completely non-greasy. Once her skin was moisturized, I sparingly used Giorgio Armani Silk Luminous skin foundation. Then I used Laura Mercier concealer under the eyes. A light dusting of Shu Uemura powder in translucent shows off her beautiful skin.”

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer, $28, sephora.com

Robert Steinken Hair Stylist Cloutier Agency

“To get fullness, texture and volume, I started with damp hair and applied RUSK Thick Spray and blow-dried her hair with a large round brush. Then, using a large curling iron, I set the hair and applied a small amount of RUSK Thermal Serum to create shine and to seal in the wave. To finish off the look and maintain the changes throughout the day, I used Kiehl's Grooming Cream.”—Robert Steinken

The Queen answered; I am a fixture of ether and ash, I am a magnetic field hung in the tremendous arc of a white winter sky. I reside in a conversation of opposites, forever transfixed in a moment, broken from time’s progression, suspended between dusk and dawn but wholly within neither. I am bound to the floor of a room worn with age, a room I cannot locate, forever being lashed by light coming through its windows. I am an effervescent transfusion of rose petals in oil, of dried and windblown fields, of Elysium, of a scrap of secret paper forgotten on a northbound train.

William Randolph Hearst’s immense wealth was fueled by the sensationalist style of journalism that he is credited for inventing—but as Lydia Hearst, one of the heirs to that fortune, shares with STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER, she prefers living way under the tabloids’ radar.

ydia Hearst is not your stereotypical modern-day heiress. She doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs. You’ll rarely see her being chased by the paparazzi. She manages her own money, has never been on a reality show, and doesn’t see herself having a fragrance named after her anytime soon. Her only quirk might be her collection of rare and exotic beetles, butterflies and spiders that fill an entire wall of her New York City home.

“I’m much more of a homebody,” says Lydia shyly. “I know everyone says that, but I really am.” All of her sedate under-the-TMZ-radar living is ironic since it was her great-grandfather, William Randolph Hearst, who invented tabloid journalism eons ago. He made a fortune doing it. And built a castle to prove it. “I haven’t been to Hearst Castle since I was three or four,” Lydia recalls. “All I remember is milking a goat and drinking the milk from a bucket there. It was warm and grassy and probably wasn’t very sanitary, but it’s a sweet memory. I’d love to go back.” In 1950, the Hearst family donated the home to the State of California, but still owns the 82,000 acres of land surrounding it, including a priceless 18-mile stretch of undeveloped coastline. Lydia arrives for our interview at the Café Rodeo at the Luxe Hotel on Rodeo Drive wearing Acne jeans, a Helmut Lang t-shirt and Lanvin flats and carrying a Chanel handbag. She is much more petite than you’d expect of one of fashion’s top supermodels. She stands only about 5-foot-7 (size 0-2 dress). She wears just a touch of makeup over a flawless complexion, an asset she attributes to “staying away from the three worst things you can do to your skin: cigarettes, alcohol, and the sun. I don’t go in the sun at all— which is pretty obvious,” she laughs, pointing to her milky white arm. “And I drink a ton of water.” I’m ready to fire off questions about her mother Patricia Hearst’s 1976 controversial ordeal with the Symbionese Liberation Army (the SLA, as they were known—a complicated story in which Patricia served nearly two years in prison for bank robbery—though she would later be pardoned by President Bill Clinton); about her father, Bernard Shaw, her mom’s former bodyguard, who ended up marrying Patricia only two months after her release; and about the more-than-likely titillating details of Lydia’s personal fortune.

But Lydia leans in with her big, innocent green eyes, and softly whispers, “So…what do you want to know?” Her vulnerable demeanor derails my planned interrogation. Okay, I caved. I open with “So...how’d you become a successful fashion model?” and other more innocuous queries. “Eileen Ford of Ford Models spotted me at the Louis Lucari salon in New York. Neil Hamil and Eileen were the only ones who originally saw potential in me,” Lydia explains, “I’m shorter than most fashion models, so to help get me in the door we dropped the ‘hyphen-Shaw’ from my last name.” Their plan worked. Photographer Steven Meisel, indisputably the top (and highest-paid) fashion photographer in the world, was one of the first to call the heiress in for a casting. The casting, and ultimately the photoshoot, turned out to be any model’s equivalent of winning the Super Lotto. “My very first shoot was for the cover of Italian Vogue with Steven Meisel,” Lydia beams. The shoot stamped the Good Housekeeping (a Hearst publication) seal of approval squarely on Lydia’s forehead. “Two weeks after my cover came out, I did the Prada campaign with Steven,” she recalls, before rattling off the rest of her résumé. “I’ve done over fifty international fashion magazine covers. I’ve worked with top photographers like Terry Richardson, Steven Klein, Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino, Craig McDean, and Ellen von Unwerth.” Before she was Lydia Hearst, international supermodel, she was Lydia Hearst-Shaw of Wilton, Connecticut, born on September 19, 1987, who grew up living…well, the simple life. “Contrary to what most people think,” she says persuasively, “I didn’t grow up in Manhattan or Los Angeles. I grew up in a small town in the middle of the woods and I was bused to the local public high school.” Then she shares more things that, gosh darn it, (continued)

make her just like you and me. “My first car was a silver 1987 Volvo station wagon with a navy interior. It was my dad’s old car. As a junior and senior, I had an after-school job at the Outdoor Sports Center. I used to know everything about athletic wear.” Wait. C’mon, Lydia, you’re kidding, and I used to have a paper route delivering the San Francisco Chronicle (a Hearst paper). I really did. To this day, Lydia values her family over all else, and mentions that she talks to her parents often. “Like five times a day…but no, I’m not into the Skype thing,” she says about the latest telecom craze. “It kind of creeps me out. I actually put a sticker over my computer camera. I feel like I’d be the idiot eating cookies and watching a movie and realizing I’m broadcasting to the world.”

The Golden Touch According to Forbes. com, the multibillion-dollar Hearst Corporation ranks in the top 100 of America’s largest private companies. It spins its golden web across real estate, publishing, television, radio, entertainment, syndication and interactive media. At last count, they own 53 newspapers and over 200 magazines, with stakes in the A&E Network, Lifetime, the History Channel, and ESPN. Tack on the family’s 42-story Hearst Tower on 57th Street in New York and their 47-story Hearst Tower in Charlotte for good measure, and it’s doubtful that opening an overdraft-protected checking account for Lydia’s children’s children may ever be a concern.

One thing Lydia spends money on is her collections of books, posters, and bugs that fill her New York home. Yes, bugs. “I collect first-edition books. I have Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures Underground and Mark Twain’s The Diary of Adam and Eve. I also collect original-print film posters. I have Blowup, Citizen Kane (the Orson Welles film based on the life of William Randolph Hearst), 8 1/2, and Midnight Cowboy. There’s also one wall that’s covered in framed butterflies, beetles, spiders, and almost every rare and exotic bug. My favorite is the Egyptian Scorpion. It’s a beautiful purple and pink bug. I wouldn’t want one crawling on me, necessarily, but I love looking at it. If you’re ever in New York, you’ll have to come to tea and see it.” Um, no, that’s okay. Lydia is also a tireless volunteer. In a lower and serious voice she explains, “I went on a mission to Cairo for Operation Smile (an organization

that performs surgery on needy patients with cleft lips and palates). It’s a life-altering experience to witness the drastic change that happens overnight for these patients.” Lydia anticipates going back on missions twice more this year. “When I’m in New York, I deliver meals three days a week for an organization called God’s Love We Deliver (a food-delivery service for those stricken with HIV/AIDS and other debilitating conditions). Lydia is also a contributor to The American Friends of Versailles (a nonprofit that helps care for the grounds and fountains there). “Actually, the best concert I’ve ever seen was Jimmy Buffet performing a benefit there. It was so random. Here he is singing “Cheeseburger in Paradise” at the Palace of Versailles! What are the chances of that happening?” Now in Los Angeles, Lydia is ready to take on acting. She’s studying with coach Penny Allen and is represented by Chuck James at ICM. “We actually met on the set of John Waters’ Cry-Baby when I was only four. My mom was in the film, and he represented her. I work with Wilhelmina as my new print agent—they are a great team. I also don’t see any reason why I can’t transition into other aspects of the arts. At least as models we know that we can look good on camera, and now with high-def...easy.” Surprisingly, to this day Lydia has not worked with a Hearst publication—a lineup that includes Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and Town and Country. “I’ve only worked with Condé Nast,” she claims, adding, “But is there anything better than Vogue? Vogue is Vogue— it’s like winning an Oscar. But don’t get me wrong, I love Harper’s too!” she adds with a wink, just in case Glenda Bailey might be listening. G

BRITWEEK and Springtime are here! —George Blodwell These are exciting times—what with springtime smiles and the arrival of BritWeek festivities. BritWeek kicks off with a star-studded soccer match, the British Consul General’s garden party, and the charity ball with Sir Richard Branson. For you fashionistas, we have our G enlux British Designer of the Year Award and fashion show. This year we are honoring Matthew Williamson, and the Genlux fashion show will showcase his fabulous collection. Call for your tickets to this event before they sell out (310-275-5700). An homage to the late Alexander McQueen might even be in order. I will miss him and his genius tailoring and rebel sprit.

Pastel suits abound this spring/summer, and Sir Paul Smith is right on cue. This season, Sir Paul’s sneakers are fun and quirky—wear them. Lanvin suits and summer coats are spectacular. You must try one on! Lanvin has left out the back of the collar—a subtle and very effective twist. Etro, master of color combining, has some breathtaking shirts to add sophistication to any outfit. Tom Ford shirts with discs add a new take on classics with this simple but clever design. The black-diamond cufflinks and ring from David Yurman are so cool, they’re hot. Then, of course, there’s always Gucci!

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? —by ALMIE ROSE

ometimes, with a freakish Hulk-like passion, I really hate the Internet and text messaging. It’s too easy to get in touch with people, and that’s the problem. It’s almost impossible to play hard-to-get when you are literally not hard to get, and no one else is, either.

I was told that it’s a good thing to want people to know that you like them. Big Bird was always hugging people and had lots of celebrity friends hugging him back. Even DeNiro hugged Big Bird. On Valentine’s Day you would bring in bagfuls of paper valentines, one for everyone, and you would get one from everyone too, because that’s just how it worked. E.T. reached out and touched Eliot with his finger, and that damn kid almost fell to the ground he was so excited. So when did it become a bad thing to let people know you were interested? Or, more accurately, how often can you call and/ or text someone before you look desperate and undesirable? How much is too much? I’ve been on both the giving and receiving end of Constant Texting Syndrome (or CTS). It’s just so easy to send a quick thought out to someone else. With a flick of your finger you can ask someone, “Watcha doin?” and not have to wait on the other end of the line, trudging through the valley of awkward silence that you sometimes cross when on the phone. You know those conversations. They begin with such hope and vigor, where your voice is about two octaves higher than it should be, and quickly descend into silences so bizarrely spaced that you eventually ask the other person, “Are you high?” If you’re lucky, they are. Then you can think, “Oh, this dying conversation has nothing to do with me, thank God” and ask them if they’d rather talk about Fraggle Rock. But if you send that innocent, breezy ”Just wanted to see how you’re doin” (never with a G on the end, because you’re keepin it casual) text and you don’t hear back, you suddenly feel like you want to

118 GENLUX SPRING II / 2010

kill yourself. “They’re probably just napping” is the first reasonable explanation you come up with, but before long you find yourself rehashing everything you know about them and their lives, mentally mapping out what you think they’re doing with their day, stealing clues from previous emails and online profiles the way birds steal crumbs of food: “I know that Bo likes to jog in the mornings, so he’s probably off doing that, and then later he’s probably having a lunch meeting and I know he has a show in a few days so he’s probably at band rehearsal and he’ll probably get to my text/voice mail as soon as he’s done with that unless it’s a Thursday, in which case he’s probably visiting his brother and they probably went to see that new John Cusack movie because he has a Say Anything poster hanging in his room so he’s probably catching the 9 o’clock show at The Grove.” Hopefully, you know someone who can slap you before you get to this point. The worst thing to do is send another text. That’s the quickest way to Crazytown. It’s like buying a first-class ticket. It doesn’t make sense; this technology was created for us to get in touch with each other at a faster and easier rate, but God forbid you actually do that. Sometimes we pretend that the Internet doesn’t even work. “Maybe he just didn’t get my email,” you think, as if the Internet is an old bus that breaks down from time to time. You also do this when someone you’re trying to avoid sends a barrage of emails. “I’ll ignore this, and if they question me later I’ll tell them my Internet was down.” It’s the new socially accepted lie, like “Sorry, there was traffic.” We all buy it because the other option is that we were purposefully being ignored, and that’s unbearable. I think if either party is saying more than the other person, it’s probably too much (or if for every text they send, you send three to five). By “saying,” I literally don’t mean “saying”; I mean that new medium of sending messages out into space through phones or computers or magic or however it works, I have no idea. To me it’s magic that anyone is ever able to function at all. We’re a complicated species.

BRITWEEK FILE-O-FACTS: TEA COZY

GENLUXSHOP GENLUXSHOP BRITISH INVASION THE BRITISH AREN’T COMING—THEY’RE HERE! AND WE HAVE THEM TO THANK FOR THESE JOLLY-GOOD FINDS AND DESTINATIONS. —SHANNON L. BOWEN In 1939, after Britain and France declared war on Germany, the British Ministry of Information created an ad campaign to boost the morale of the British people, putting up posters with slogans like “Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory.” But the most intrinsically British of the posters—which read “Keep Calm and Carry On”—was never issued. A bookseller discovered a copy of the poster nearly 60 years later, and now it’s available as a work of art. I like this version, with an antiqued Union Jack in the background. Framed, $124, decorativethings.com The china, the finger sandwiches, the trifles, the scones… Few traditions are more quintessentially English than afternoon tea, offered daily 2:30–5 p.m. at the Montage Beverly Hills. Caviar, or sturgeon roe, has long been a delicacy sought after by royalty all over the world. And for almost a century, Petrossian has been the purveyor of choice for those in the know. But Petrossian’s LA outpost, once a simple café and caviar shop, is still a bit of a secret. Recently reborn as a posh but comfortable white-on-white space, the restaurant offers culinary delights like a foie gras crème brûlée. And the boutique is replete with temptations like fine jams and pâtés, French chocolates, and of course, a caviar selection that is simply nonpareil. Petrossian, 321 N. Nikki Sixx and Kelly Gray trade quips on truths, rumors, and who will play them in their inevitable biopic. (Don’t hold your breath, Johnny Depp.) —marsha takeda morrison Say what you will about what goes on backstage at a Mötley Crüe concert, but in 2006 it was also the scene of a meeting that would launch a clothing powerhouse. This is where St. John Knits scion Kelly Gray met Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, and having discovered their shared love of fashion, would go on to start Royal Underground. As you can see, these two go together like, well, rock and roll. I’m sure you’ve told this story a thousand times, but for the 1001th time, how did the two of you meet? GRAY: Well, Nikki always says this is a bad thing, but we met backstage at a Mötley Crüe concert. SIXX: It doesn’t sound very good to say that I met Kelly backstage at a Mötley Crüe concert. Somehow that just doesn’t sound right. GRAY: But Nikki, to me that just sounds like a normal place to meet! I was at a concert with my friend Tommy [Lee] and he invited me to a Mötley Crüe show. I was very apprehensive about going because I’d Googled their concerts and I was nervous it might be a little rough for my appetite. I showed up wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress and Manolo heels. I was quite fascinated by Nikki—I called him Mr. Sixx because I didn’t know what else to say. He let me go on calling him that for quite a bit longer. SIXX: We’ve spent the rest of our relationship with me trying to get her to reenact that—calling me Mr. Sixx. But it doesn’t happen so much anymore. She just calls me Mr. Late. Considering your backgrounds, you seem like a classic case of opposites attracting. GRAY: It’s kind of like two magnets! It’s an attraction and opposite points of view, made up of strengths and weaknesses. SIXX: With Kelly’s experience and life in fashion and my experience—not in the fashion industry, but living a life of fashion since I was a kid—we fit together like a hand in a glove. From the outside it’s like the odd couple, but from the inside it’s like it makes perfect sense. GRAY: Nikki has a great eye for fashion and detail, and the art of Royal is in the details. He has a way of putting himself together, and ninety percent of the population aspires to look that cool. It’s my job to try to translate that and make it possible for everybody to look like that.

Kelly, is it true that the mannequins in the Beverly Hills St. John boutique are based on your likeness? GRAY: Yes, it’s not a myth! They used to be, but not anymore. But yes, the rumor is true! Do you still wear St. John?

GRAY: I had a pretty amazing collection, and I’m not going

to say it gets as much wear as it did in the old days. I’m a big fan of Royal now; I’m quite proud to be embraced by the music industry.

And Nikki, do your Crüe bandmates wear Royal Underground? SIXX: We wear St. John knits. [laughs] The guys love RU, as do so many of my peers. I was on tour with Mötley recently, and Joe Perry was opening for us. Backstage I noticed that Joe was wearing the same RU cashmere zip-up as me. We just started laughing—it was almost like we called each other before the show and said, “Now, you wear the black one...” Any plans to branch out the Royal Underground brand into non-fashion endeavors? GRAY: Nikki and I have talked about so many ideas and so many wonderful things to put our brand stamping on, but it’s kind of like juggling—you want to make sure you can juggle all the balls without dropping one before you throw in another one. And so at this point it would be like throwing in knives instead of oranges. SIXX: It’s hard, because we get excited and we’re like, “Let’s do a Royal Underground hotel!” and people say, “What? You’re insane!” But part of the excitement of doing something like this is that there’s always an element of complete insanity. Why do something like this? Chances are failure. Who would play the two of you in “Royal Underground: the Movie?” GRAY: [laughing] I’ve got mine, but now I don’t want to say because I’m embarrassed! Nikki, I’d pick Johnny Depp for you. SIXX: What? For me? I’m way more handsome than him! GRAY: Well, I’d pick Keira Knightley. SIXX: There you go, The Movie. We’ll put that on our wish list next to furnishings and hotels. And we’ll reconvene with this conversation in ten years and see where we’re at.

After more than two centuries, Asprey, purveyor of the finest in British luxury goods, is upholding the tradition of superb craftsmanship. —Shannon L. Bowen

A

ll luxury goods are not created equal. Any discerning shopper worth her stilettos knows that. Once upon a time, the logo of a storied fashion house ensured that an item was truly exclusive: crafted by skilled artisans and made of high-quality and often rare materials. Now, such genuinely special goods are much harder to find—unless you’re at Asprey, where, after more than 225 years, the highest caliber of craftsmanship remains the order of the day. Originally established as a silk-printing business in the English village of Mitcham in the late 1700s, Asprey opened its flagship store in 1847 on London’s famed Bond Street, where it also installed a collection of workshops— for gold- and silversmiths, watchmakers, leather workers, jewelers, and designers—that still exists today. The brand quickly evolved into one of the world’s foremost purveyors of luxury goods, including fine jewelry, timepieces, silver, china, crystal, and leather goods, and earned the first of its royal warrants, from Queen Victoria, in 1862. In 2006, the brand even received its own coat of arms in recognition of its commitment to unique craftsmanship and luxury. Appropriately, Asprey’s only West Coast boutique is located in the Beverly Hills Hotel, no stranger to royal visitors. “With the Beverly Hills Hotel, there is a very private feeling, and our shared clientele made sense for us,” says store manager Dominique Sachs. “Asprey has long been a favorite of Hollywood royalty as well as British royalty. … The privacy of the boutique in the hotel has great appeal to those with a high profile wishing to shop for jewelry or

special gifts.” Special gifts, indeed. The brand has a long tradition of catering to the whims of its wealthy and wellknown clients. In 1925, HM Queen Mary commissioned a necklace for HRH Princess Margaret’s 18th birthday. In 1930, the Maharajah of Patiala commissioned five teak traveling trunks, one for each of his wives. And in 1973, a bespoke chess set was commissioned for the birthday of none other than Ringo Starr. And you too can walk into the Beverly Hills boutique and commission something extraordinary. Bespoke commissions are “highly important to the brand, and so many of our customers want to create something completely unique—something just for them,” Sachs says. “With our resources and workshops, we can do just about anything our customers dream up.” Of course, the shelves at Asprey are already full of the stuff of dreams, like the 1781 collection, which includes two must-have handbags available in crocodile, python, and ostrich and a weekender in calf leather with crocodile trim—all fashioned after an early traveling satchel. There’s also the Mayfair square, an oversized, envelope-shaped clutch that’s proving especially popular this season. Clearly, after more than two and a quarter centuries, Asprey is sticking by one of its original ad campaigns, which proclaimed “articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.”

LES HABITUDEs. classic with a twist. les habitudeS’ April TONG is known around town as ‘the dress whisperer.’ HERE, she shares her uncanny ability to pick out the perfect dress with our own Almie Rose.

he outside looks like a castle, the inside a museum. Eartha Kitt’s C’est Si Bon slinks out of the speakers. A wall is lined with white slips hanging from racks; above them is a shelf covered in thigh-high black leather boots. This is Les Habitudes. “We’re not trendy,” says April Tong, the store’s resident ‘dress whisperer’ (coined by her adoring fans/customers), “We’re more classic.” Or, maybe, judging from the juxtaposition of a lacey embroidered gown with hard metal jewelry and a shearling coat, ‘classic with a twist.’ Founded in 1982, Les Habitudes is a Los Angeles standby for stunning and original bridal and evening wear. Celebrities have gone from the Robertson store to red-carpet events and their own weddings in Les Habitudes gowns. Does one need to be famous to shop here or is it merely recommended? “We’ve helped everyone,” April stresses. “Everyone! People fly from out-of-state or overseas just to shop here—from, I would say, any financial background. We have people who just shop our sales. It runs the gamut.” One can understand why. Pieces in this store, some adorned with semi-precious gems like amethyst and rose quartz, are breathtakingly beautiful and unique, and furthermore, any dress can be customized to accommodate anyone, including Les Habitudes’ youngest customer, a 10 year old. “We actually cut adult dresses down to size, which is really fun. We never say no. At least I never do.” What’s one of the more unusual requests they’ve had? “Tessa Virtue won a gold medal for ice dancing, and her mother came in here in November of last year. She said, ‘This is going to be an odd request, but do you ever do skating outfits out of these dresses?’ And I said, ‘I’ve

never done it, but I’d love to try.’ ”Precautions needed to be taken: for example, would Virtue need to jump in them? “‘Well, there’s lifts. It’s a little different from actual figure skating; they don’t do axels and stuff like that, but they do do lifts. So I said, ‘Come in, and bring the leotard, and we’ll do it.’ And we did it.” A customer emerges from behind a dressing-room curtain, wearing a beaded gown that looks as though it was practically sculpted on her. She looks perfect. “You’re a hot-looking mom!” April gushes, without a trace of false sincerity. “I picked hers,” she explains. “I just put it on her. I said, ‘Put this on,’ and she made a face but said OK. And she bought it.” Is this what customers mean when they call April a ‘dress whisperer?’—how she somehow instinctively knows what would look good on whoever walks in? She laughs. “I eyeball ‘em. It takes me three seconds. Three seconds or less. They don’t know I’m doing it. I can’t help it. I already did you! I know you’re not looking for anything, but I can’t help it.” Since I have to make everything about me, I have to know, what would April pick out for me? “Well, just from looking at you, you’re a fun, funky style.” (It may have been my Michael Jackson military-style jacket with my Serge Gainsbourg T-shirt that gave that away.) “I’d definitely do a two-piece. I’d do a black skirt, I’d bustle that up.” She points to one serenely draped on a mannequin. “I’d put you in leather boots, and I’d tell you to match that with a T-shirt. And get one of those [another point] sweaters, and you’re out of here! And one of those leather jackets.” And she’s absolutely dead-on.

SEEING SPOTS

If you’ve recently welcomed a little bundle of joy into the world, you’ve probably been less joyful about the accompanying melasma, or “preggers mask,” an unwelcome tan or dark facial discoloration that gets worse with exposure to sunlight. While melasma often disappears spontaneously after you’ve given birth or stopped hormone therapy, explains the Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group’s Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour, sunscreen is the most important factor when it comes to successful results, and “treatments like Topicalde pigmenting agents can facilitate the process.” ¶ You can try Cosmelan, a combination of depigmentation agents that decreases the production of melanin, the culprit behind sun spots and hormone-

induced melasma. “The initial treatment with Cosmelan is always done in the doctor’s office and involves evaluation of the skin type,” says Dr. Forouzanpour,“followed by cleansing with a degreasing agent in order to remove dead cells, skin oils, and old debris.” Once your skin is squeaky clean, a Cosmelan 1 mask is applied and left on for six to ten hours, depending on skin type (you can go home wearing the mask). After the appropriate amount of time has passed, remove the mask with water and a neutral cleanser, then immediately apply mesoestetic Hydra-vital factor K cream. (DON’T) LET THE SUNSHINE IN! FROLICKING POOLSIDE AT CHATEAU MARMONT? DR. DAVIS B. NGUYEN HAS SOME WISE WORDS ABOUT REPAIRING SUN DAMAGE—AND MAKING SURE IT DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN. —DAWN SHAND JOHNSON Double-Board Certified, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Davis Nguyen trained at Harvard, Yale, and with the famed Dr. Kamer of the renowned Lasky Clinic. Here he gives his tips on sun damage and sun protection: Photo: Lee Brubaker

EXPERT OPINION

GENLUXSHOP

What level of SPF do you suggest that people wear, and how often should it be reapplied?

For daily exposure, I recommend a minimum of SPF30. For prolonged sun exposure, like during vacations or outdoor events, I recommend a broad-spectrum physical blocker with titanium and zinc, like Solar SPF58 ($35).

Photo: Lee Brubaker

What treatments can you do to correct sun damage?

Fractionated CO2 laser is an ablative resurfacing treatment that corrects hyperpigmentation (sun spots) and improves fine lines, wrinkles, tone, and texture of the skin. The CO2 laser removes layers of photodamaged skin, encouraging cellular turnover and the formulation of new collagen, the effect of which is a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. A minimum of three treatments is required, at one-month intervals, in order to see maximum results. Due to the laser’s fractionation, downtime— which was once three to five weeks—is now a mere three to five days. A series of three treatments for the face costs $3000.

Significant correction of sun damage—and the hyperpigmentation effects of conditions like melasma—can also be achieved with a Vi Peel treatment consisting of a combination of phenol, TCA, Salicylic acid, Retin-A, and Vitamin C. Application is relatively quick and can be done during your lunch hour, with peeling occurring on the third, fourth, and fifth days after treatment. Full healing takes one week. Vi Peels can be repeated in a series over several months and “boosted” for maximum effect. At the Linden Clinic, the cost of one treatment is $300; a series of three costs $750; and each “booster” costs $50. What sun protection products do you suggest for post-procedure Photo: Michelle Hood skin?

Following a laser or Vi Peel treatment, it is particularly important to avoid re-damaging the skin through overexposure to the sun. I advise patients to wear sunscreen daily, like Kinerase’s Procedure Recovery with SPF30; unlike many exfoliating anti-aging moisturizers, its gentle ingredients will not irritate or harm delicate post-procedural skin. It is specially formulated to hydrate and protect skin, encouraging faster healing and enhancing the results of a given treatment. As a surgeon, one of my primary concerns is post-procedural healing and optimal scar management. I advise my patients to use a two-step system to protect their incisions: Start with a thin layer of Kelocote silicone scar gel, and once it dries, apply Kinerase’s Procedure Recovery with SPF30 ($45) for optimal scar protection and healing.

DR. NGUYEN’S SUN DAMAGE SOLUTIONS!

Dr. Nguyen’s post-laser moisturizer of choice is Kinerase Procedure Recovery with SPF30. A gentle moisturizer, it’s perfect for preventive protection from the sun’s harmful rays. $105, available at Dr. Nguyen’s office.

140 GENLUX SPRING II / 2010

“For optimal scar healing after any surgical procedure,” says Dr. Nguyen, “patients should use a silicone scar gel like Kelocote layered with a sunscreen like Kinerase’s Procedure Recovery with SPF30. Protecting your scars from the effects of the elements and the sun’s damaging rays will help to ensure that they gradually fade away.” $45, available at Dr. Nguyen’s office

Vi Peel treatment, with phenol, TCA, Salicylic acid, Retin-A, and Vitamin C, is great for evening-out skin tone; lightening, brightening, and correcting the damaging effects of sun; and treating melasma stains. One treatment, $300; series of three treatments, $750; booster treatment, $50; available at The Spa at Linden Clinic For more infor mation contact: Davis B. ON THE GREEN SCENE

IN BEVERLY HILLS, GIGI’S STANDS FOR “GOING GREEN” —DAWN SHAND JOHNSON

“When I started as an apprentice in a salon in 1961, I was 11 years old. At that

time the products were toxic and had very strong chemicals. This caused the clients as well as the hairdresser to develop allergies and health problems. Around 1984, I started mixing natural ingredients—vegetables, acidic fruits, herbs—for use in coloring, highlights, straightening, and other treatments. A perfect green salon environment is one without toxins in the air or irritants on the clients’ hair and scalp, but one that still leaves the hair soft and shiny and the scalp healthy.” —GiGi, GiGi Vision Hair Salon, 434 N. Roman Salon eco-colorist Danielle Kelly on nontoxic hair coloring:

BLEACHING & LIGHTENING: “Color lines that

lift pigment from the hair shaft have to use chemicals such as ammonia. In my search for an eco color line, I found that a lot of products claiming to be nontoxic actually contain large amounts of ammonia. The eco-friendly color line I use has no ammonia and does not lift pigment—it only deposits it. It’s herbal-based, not petroleumbased, which is good because part of being green is not just avoiding toxic chemicals but using renewable resources such as plant-based products like lavender oil or walnut extract, which has been used to dye things for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples of North America. The color also has oleic acid, a component of camellia oil, and is similar to a person’s natural sebum. Best of all, I am able to help people feel better about themselves without destroying the eco-system.”

WHAT TO AVOID:

“The key ingredients of shampoo and conditioner a person should look out for and avoid are parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are not good for the environment, people, or hair color.”

Kim Vo Embellish with Blue Lotus Volumizing Masque is free of sulfates and sodium chloride. $45, kimvo.com

HIGHLIGHTS & BLOND HAIR: “If a client

wants highlights and wants to stay in the non-toxic realm, I lowlight the hair with shades of eco-friendly color, making their existing hair color the highlight. This illusion of highlights creates dimension and shine. For gray hair, I deposit several levels of blond eco-friendly color, using the same technique as traditional highlights. Lastly, if a client just can’t live without their blond color, I will meet them halfway and use a less toxic color to lighten the hair. The less toxic color has lower amounts of chemicals than traditional color lines; still, I only do this for highlights, not as an all-over tint.” Danielle Kelly, Roman Salon, West Hollywood, 310-854-1030, romansalonla.com

sircuit skin cosmeceuticals’ Michael Wolfgeher tells our ALMIE ROSE how he went from deniM and inseams to moisturizers and serums. About eight years ago, Michael Wolfgeher was a denim impresario who said he practically “bled blue.” Now he’s the man behind Sircuit®Skin Cosmeceuticals, a skincare line loved by celebrities from Jeremy Piven to Charlize Theron. Having started in Wolfgeher’s garage, Sircuit is now available across the country and on the Web, and shipped off to places as far as Norway. Tell us a little bit about your background. I’m originally from Tacoma, Washington. I moved here 25 years ago and got involved in the garment business and made jeans for a living. I had quite a big company in the ’80s––Steele Jeans. We rocked it. We were at $70 million. And then it kind of went bust.

Sircuit®Skin Cosmeceuticals o.m.g. anti-aging serum, $150, sircuitskin.com

And you came out unscathed? I came out totally unscathed, but I also came out not wealthy. (Laughs) I kind of stumbled on this skincare opportunity. After I left the garment business, I had a T-shirt company. During all this time of traveling for the company I was starting to look pretty haggard. I would stop by Neiman Marcus and Barneys and all the stores, and talk to the women at the counter. I would buy everything they recommended. I’d bring it home, put it on, and break out. Every single time. And I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what it was. So I asked a friend who was into skincare, “If you ever run across anything I need, let me know.” Within a few days, he brought over a little sample and said, “You gotta try this—it’s using a new tech called Chiral technology.” I took it, went upstairs, washed my face, and was floored. It was the weirdest thing—the only way I can describe it is that my skin felt right. It was one of those “Oh my God” moments. When I came downstairs I asked, “Do you have a moisturizer?” And he said we could make one. We just kind of started this little thing, and I developed a line for myself. But coming from my background in the garment business, I didn’t have any

insight into the cosmetic business. So I spent about eight months shopping all the department stores, did a lot of research in the technology, and thought, “I’ll give it a shot.” How did you get your product out there? In the first six months we did skincare parties. That was sort of a test market for me just to see if what I felt about the products was translating. People flipped out, and we sold a lot of product. Then we branched out, and everyone said, “You have to have a website.” Once we had the website up, everything just kind of happened. We started in the house, in the garage, and we kept going until we literally took over the entire house. Everything in the living room and dining room was computers and people and employees. Now we’re in a new building that we completely redesigned, and it’s beautiful. What makes Sircuit Skin Cosmeceuticals different from other skincare products? Our product is pure product. So many other products are just a little bit of whatever is good—and then a lot of water, preservatives, and other stuff. And so we formulated a whole different way than what companies do today. It’s superconcentrated; you need just a little bit. The success of our company is simply based on the fact that not only is our look appealing, but the products perform. They go way beyond what people expect from a skincare line. What’s the signature product? There’s not necessarily one specific product we’re known for. The o.m.g. serum is a popular one. Great name. People really respond to our names. But when I did it eight years ago it was very controversial, and I took a lot of flack for it. I knew that what I had inside the bottle was very unique, so I had to position the line in a really unique way.

Genlux Out-of-Towner

As Coco Before Chanel reminded us last year, a determined woman can do anything she wants if she only puts her mind to it. But Englandborn designer Paula Thomas doesn’t need reminding. As “strong,” “assertive” and “elegant” as the women who love her edgy, rocker-chic clothes, she’s already lived the dreams of countless young fashion addicts. After a successful career as a model—Thomas’s first fashion memory is of being on the cover of ID magazine in London—she ventured behind the scenes, becoming the creative partner of Julien MacDonald. But she was destined to set out on her own, and after consulting for a number of Milanese fashion houses, she pursued the dream of her own label. In 2006, Paula Thomas for Thomas Wylde—now simply Thomas Wylde—was born. With her line now sold in 183 boutiques around the world, and a diffusion line, menswear, fragrance and eyewear collections in the works, it’s no wonder that Thomas cites as one of her fashion icons a woman who “built a company and a business by herself ”: Coco Chanel. —Shannon L.
