STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE One of the perks (among zillions) of working on a fashion magazine is photographing our subjects at some genuinely fabulous private ranches and mansions, and this one is no exception. When we reached out to Kym Douglas’s team about featuring her in GENLUX, publicist Christine Mango suggested shooting Kym at her friend Patrick Nesbitt’s home. She said he had a lovely Montecito estate. That was an understatement. When I say his place is sprawling, no, it’s spraaaawling. Let me attempt to paint the picture. The grounds include a 43,000-square-foot home, a 17horse stable, a driving range with putting green, a duck pond with a butterfly habitat, and a full-size polo field (equivalent to nine football fields). His chunk of real estate is so large that he built additional residences—and continues to build them—around his own. Andrew Matusik and his team lugged their heavy lighting gear from one end of the vast property to the other (sorry, Andrew), but it was worth it. His incredible images of Kym possess the usual dose of Matusik magic (p.34). As I learned during our interview, Kym had been the recent target of several unfortunate circumstances including stage 3 cancer and the loss of her husband of 37 years. Not one to wallow, Kym’s soul shines brighter and more optimistic than any defeat, and she’s currently mending her sails. To the point, last month, City of Hope in New York honored Kym with their Spirit of Life Award. After getting to know her, it’s easy to see why people love this affable human and why she deserves the prestigious award. Françoise Kirkland, wife of legendary photographer Douglas Kirkland, texted me about featuring Italian actress and endangered animal advocate Tatiana Luter and suggested I try working with Dana Fineman, a protégée of Douglas. Serendipitously, Jennifer Gardner (my go-to hotel PR contact) emailed about the newly renovated Hotel Amarano in Burbank that morning. To round out our glam team, I brought on my new favorite LA stylist, Corinne DiGiaimo, my go-to LA hairstylist, Robert Steinken, and brilliant makeup artist Alfred Mercado. Taty (as her friends call her) is a firecracker! She’s petite but can light up a room (p.48).

Next, we photographed the ageless and beautiful Alana Stewart at her Zen’d-out Benedict Canyon home. For the past 13 years, she’s helmed the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, which aids cancer patients and funds vital research at many major universities. Once again, shooter Andrew Matusik did the honors, and I had the chance to interview Alana, who, side note, makes the best brownies you’ve ever had (p.40). In New York, Matusik photographed artist/model Renata Gubayeva (p.28). The Turkmenistan-born autodidact, raised in Ukraine, now resides in New York, where her art career is on the rise. Renata turned canvas for makeup artist Kisha Augustine, Pat McGrath’s right hand—the woman once deemed by Anna Wintour as, “the most influential makeup artist in the world.” On our cover: Venezuelan beauty Rosmary Altuve Gomez, whose philanthropic work includes human rights for indigenous people, ocean conservation, and climate change. Our returning photographer Samantha Rapp teamed up with stylist and GENLUX executive fashion editor Mindy Saad on some crazy good photos (p.76). On the Runway! There were so many great fashion shows this season, including Valentino, CHANEL, Jean Paul Gaultier, DIOR, and Balenciaga. Perhaps the most inventive was John Galliano’s Maison Margiela Artisanal 2022 collection show. In place of the pedestrian runway, he opted for an Old West shoot ‘em up multi-media show that combined BTS movie-making with a live theatrical performance. The models lip-synced through their lines while donning layers of his extraordinary ultra-bowed and embellished couture. Bravo, Galliano! G

Reynata Gubayeva was born in Turkmenistan and moved with her family to Ukraine at a young age. Growing up, she was the kid who was always creating artwork in the classroom. “To my family, art was not a serious profession,” says Reynata, “so I got a degree in economics.” To her surprise, she was able to pay for her education by selling paintings abroad. “I was shocked when someone asked to buy one of my drawings,” she says. At the time, she started modeling in different countries, making it hard to find time for her artwork. When she finally settled in New York, she became dedicated to her craft and received tremendous support. “Some perceive my art as dark,” she admits, “But for me, it’s just a fragment of life that I find remarkable enough to document this way.”

DOUG

Navigating the Kym Douglas Wikipedia page, you’ll find her laundry list of accomplishments: television host, bestselling author, comedienne, beauty, fashion, and lifestyle expert. Last month, at a ceremony in New York, the nonstop, optimistic, and cancer-free Kym accepted and added the prestigious Spirit of Life Award from the City of Hope to her resumé. She shares a bit about her life in response to our GENLUX Two-Word Interview. ™—SK Your GPS? I’m in my living room in Brentwood with my 15-year-old dog, Belichick, a white Maltese named after the Patriots coach. We just lost our Labrador named Tom Brady. I know, you can’t make it up. You’re wearing? Black Alo workout pants, a Target tank t-shirt, and CHANEL sneakers. Your breakfast? Two egg white patties and some blueberries. I had a smoothie with peanut butter, almond milk, frozen banana, and flax seeds. It starts out really good, and then it declines from there. Today’s schedule? I had some Zoom meetings for the upcoming City of Hope event in New York. Then I went to the post office to return some Amazon packages and to Lashlette—this great little place where I had a hydrogen facial and my brows dyed because I lost all my brows from the cancer. Your lunch? I went to Kreation and had a green juice with green Granny Smith apple, spinach, chlorophyll, pineapple, and ice. And then I said to myself, “Kym, you are so good; this is ridiculous; you need to treat

yourself.” So I went to Whole Foods and bought a bag of Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups, and I don’t want to tell you how many of those I ate. I’ll have something healthy for dinner and finish with some Yasso Chocolate Greek Yogurt bars. It sums me up: a little bad mixed with a lot of good. Beauty secret? I have three secrets: 1. Someone told me never to use oil on my skin—which is totally false—so when I turned 35, I started using oil-based makeup remover and an oil-based cleanser. As you get a little bit older, your skin gets drier, so adding oil plumps your skin. 2. My mother, who was Miss Scotland like 150 years ago, taught me to never go to bed with my makeup on. If it’s Christmas, my birthday, or New Year’s, I still take off my makeup. 3. It sounds cliché, and I don’t like to hear myself saying this, but true beauty comes from within. I think if you’re happy and you’re nice to people, your beauty radiates out! Beauty products? I like Make Nice by Nurse Jamie, Dr. Hauschka at Whole Foods, and my favorites are: 1. Retrouvé Ultimate Balm Body oil; 2. Womaness Let’s Neck

(neck moisturizer); and 3. Colorescience Sunforgettable Face Shield Bronze. It’s nice to switch it up, and give your skin a rest every once in a while. Bullying incidents? I didn’t face much bullying, but there was always a mean girl. I remember Kathy Tepper and I had a bump in the road in kindergarten. I got the red crayon, and she wanted it, and Steve Toldey gave me a valentine, and she liked him, and I didn’t like him, and I’m not making this up, but she held it against me until 12th grade. We never clicked. She was a little oil, and I was a little water. Kathy was the most popular girl and captain of the cheerleading team. I remember she didn’t want me to go to her birthday party. You know, Kathy was a small part of propelling me to leave Birmingham and to go further. Update: Kathy and I are friends on Facebook. Biggest worry? I have several. For a very long time, I felt safe and secure. I was married to my husband for 37 years. He had a 40-year contract under CBS that we thought would last forever. I was under contract with Hallmark with a show called Home & Family, and I was on

“I remember Kathy Tepper and I had a bump in the road in kindergarten...Steve Toldey gave me a valentine, and she liked him, and I didn’t like him, and I’m not making this up, but she held it against me until 12th grade.” The Ellen Show for 15 years. Then, in 2018, I got Stage 3 breast cancer, Ellen canceled her show, Hallmark canceled Home & Family, and my husband passed away—all within three years. I was a little boat in a big ocean without rudders, but my husband was always my anchor. I could have let that take me down, but I didn’t. All that said, my biggest fear is not feeling safe and secure. Am I ever going to work again? Am I ever going to be wanted in the television broadcasting world? Recent award? City of Hope in New York is honoring me with their Spirit of Hope Award, and my son will give me the award. It’s a great cause that raises money and gets the word out about this challenging disease we must eradicate. I have a great support system and have about 40 people coming out—what a great group of friends. Your heroes? My dad was my biggest hero. He was a carpenter with quiet strength and a wonderful moral compass. Being a little girl and watching your dad be a man of good character—both in and out of the house—was priceless. Also, my grandmother. She was one of the first female preachers in Scotland. Today, my

heroes are the unsung people. For instance, I live in a condo where the concierge, Roger, is morally a good man. He sits quietly behind the desk, checks guests into the building, and treats everyone equally. Those are my heroes. Any collections? Shoes. I have a million shoes, and I like Aquazzura and love Dee Ocleppo’s shoes. I also have a collection of little crossbody bags. Binge watching? The Staircase, on Netflix, the story of a well-todo family where the husband killed his wife by pushing her down the staircase ... or did he? I’m a Housewives of Beverly Hills fan—don’t judge me. I know Kyle and Kathy Hilton and Lisa Rinna. Horoscope truths? I’m a Cancer whose trait is being overly sensitive, and I can hold a grudge. Kathy Tepper! Talk about having a grudge. Holy crap! I don’t follow signs or horoscopes, but when I get my feelings hurt, I’m like a crab, and I pull in all my arms and feet and go in my shell and stay there for a while. Character change? That I hold a grudge for a long time, like against Kathy Tepper (Laughs). Honestly, it manifests in your

body with weight or disease. I want to let go, but I have a very hard time. Physical change? I wished I was taller for a long time, but I don’t anymore. I’m happy being petite. One good thing society is doing is encouraging women to embrace their bodies. I’m proud of my body for getting me back to good health. Spirit animal? I would say a unicorn or the butterfly would be a good one because of its metamorphosis. Teen advice? I’d tell my younger self, “Kym, trust your instincts. Instead of running and asking every Tom, Dick, and Harry for their advice, just be still, trust your instincts, and you’ll be fine!” What’s next? I’d love to check back with you on this in a few years. I hope that little boat in the middle of the ocean gets a new sail—a little taller and wider than I had before. I have two big daily magazine television projects in the works and a new podcast with St. John’s Hospital called Your Healthy Dose, where I interview doctors on new treatments from headaches to heart surgery—a deeper conversation than telling women which lipstick color to wear. In 2009, when The Farrah Fawcett Foundation asked Texas-born actress Alana Stewart to head their non-profit, she admitted she didn’t have a clue as to run one. Fast forward more than a decade at the helm and Alana considers it her life’s purpose to help comfort those who have cancer. She takes a moment to reflect on our GENLUX Two-Word Interview.™—SK

Your GPS? We are in my backyard in Benedict Canyon, which I love because it’s so peaceful and zen. It’s my Bohemian paradise. We just finished our amazing GENLUX shoot with photographer Andrew Matusik. You’re wearing? I love comfort! I’m wearing my favorite very soft denim, wide-leg, high-waisted Rag & Bone jeans, a Kurt Cobain t-shirt, and comfortable white patent Birkenstocks. Early years? I was raised in east Texas and went to high school in Houston. I joined Trans Texas Airways as an airline stewardess to save enough money to go model in New York. That airline job lasted nine months. I was 19. Modeling break? I went to New York with a $500 settlement from a rearend car accident and a free plane ticket from the airline. I stayed at a $7-anight hotel. To earn money, I started as a fit model at a factory. I went into Ford Models with pictures from a high school beauty pageant. As I was sitting in the reception room, Eileen Ford popped in and asked me, ‘Who are you?’ To the receptionist, she said, ‘Why are you keeping this young girl waiting?’ She took me in, introduced me to

the bookers, and sent me down to Bonwit Teller to do my makeup. Then she started sending me out to get pictures. I took photos with Francesco Scavullo for Harper’s Bazaar. She sent me to model in Paris for a year and I was in New York for another year when I met my thenfuture husband, George Hamilton. I moved out to LA and was with the Nina Blanchard agency. Childhood bullying? The boys teased me; they called me Wilt and bird legs. I was very selfconscious because I was tall and gawky, and all I wanted was to be short with big boobs. The boys were never interested in me. I remember things changed one day when I walked into high school class, and all the football team boys whistled, so I turned around to see who they were whistling at, but it was me. Everyday style? I love summer because it’s about flowy, comfortable clothes like Boho dresses. Beauty regimen? Augustinus Bader face cream, and I use a lot of oil. Tim Quinn started this new line, Halo 42, with this amazing body oil. I noticed my hair thinning from antibiotics, so I started taking prenatal vitamins and it’s getting fuller again.

Beauty secret? It’s all in how you think. Let’s face it; it’s also your genes. My great-grandmother was half Cherokee, and my other great-grandmother was American Indian. Guilty pleasure? Prince Street Pizza, and In-NOut burgers, where I get a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate milkshake. Binge watching? I just finished The Offer, the story about the movie The Godfather. I loved it because I knew so many of the people from those days, like Bob Evans, Al Ruddy, and Ali McGraw. I liked Inventing Anna. Your hobby? I love to cook and bake. When my kids come over, they want me to cook all my Southern recipes, like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, turnip greens, and cornbread—all the foods my grandmother cooked. I make pecan pie, chocolate pie, and coconut pie. It’s three days of cooking. Baking specialty? I make the best, most decadent, most fudgy chocolaty brownies—the best brownies you’ve ever tasted. Fantasy dinner? I’d invite Johnny Depp, Kid Rock, and I’d throw my two exhusbands (George Hamilton and Rod Stewart) for

a hoot. I never met my birth father because my parents divorced when I was little, so I’d have him, too. When I moved to New York, my father’s mother wrote to say he’d died. My mother married my stepfather when I was nine and he was an amazing father to me. True love? I’ve had a few loves of my life. If there were anybody still in my life and who I love as family, it would be George Hamilton. Our marriage ended not because of anything anyone did. He is a wonderful man who makes me laugh. First kiss? I was 15 and there was this really cute guy, Dave, my first crush. Then in high school, this guy got a kiss, but that’s all! I was a strict, good Southern Baptist girl. My grandmother and I would go to church on Sundays —when we would get a ride because we didn’t have a car. We lived in a modest house with no indoor plumbing and an outhouse. Philanthropy work? I’ve headed The Farrah Fawcett Foundation since 2009. Farrah was a really close friend, like my sister. When she was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, she asked me to film her journey. It was never intended to be a (cont. on page 47)

“The older I get, the more I work on myself spiritually to be a kinder, better, more compassionate person. I don’t always measure up, that’s for sure. But I try to be aware of setting that goal for myself.” Favorite getaway? I’ve always loved the desert—I like the heat. I just stayed at the La Quinta Resort.

show, but NBC offered her a lot of money, so I produced Farrah’s Story, which received an Emmy nomination. The documentary was about her treatments in Germany. We all thought she would survive because she was such a fighter. Faith leap? The man handling Farrah’s estate asked me if I would head up her Foundation, and I told him I didn’t know anything about running a foundation. My good friend Sherry Lansing said, ‘Oh, you’re smart, you’ll figure it out. Just do it.’ So I did. I started to learn all the ins and outs; rules and regulations. I never thought it would be a full-time job, but it has. Your purpose? When you’re doing something that helps other people and not just doing it for yourself, it gives you a purpose in life. I think this is where I’m supposed to be. Our goal is to make people lives better who are suffering from cancer. Research funding? We fund cutting-edge research at Brown, Duke, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Harvard, and others. We receive the grant requests and give them to our scientific advisor, Dr. Lawrence Piro, who was Farrah’s oncologist, for approval,. We also have a

Three blessings: 1. My children: Kimberly, Sean and Ashley; 2. My two granddaughters; and 3. Waking up healthy every morning.

ALANA IN FARRAH RED SWIMSUIT AMERICAN FLAG TSHIRT, $25$30 (BASED ON SIZE), THEFARRAHFAWCETTFOUNDATION.ORG patient assistance fund for those in need. Farrah died of anal cancer, so we focus on all HPV cancers. We have an HPV dream team with Stand Up to Cancer. We try to assist in underserved areas where people are more likely to need help. We’ve done a lot of really good things. I think Farrah would be really proud of the work we’re doing. Charity rules? From day one, I’ve been a stickler for following the rules. Farrah left us enough money to take care of our administrative costs, so 100 percent of donations, like our upcoming TexMex Fiesta in on Oct. 20, go to research and patient assistance funds. Farrah’s poster? Farrah got the rights to the red

bathing suit image by Bruce McBroom about six months before she died. I was with her in Germany when the attorney called with the good news that she’d received the rights. She left her intellectual property, which includes rights to her likeness, to the foundation. So when anyone wants to license the red bathing suit photo, they come to our foundation. You’ll find many items with the photo on our website, [ farrahfawcettfoundation. org.] One hundred percent of those sales go to funding the research projects. We plan to sell an NFT (non-fungible token) of the photo. Go-to restaurants? I love the food at Mr. Chows, e. baldi, and Craig’s is where I go the most.

Your sign? I’m a Taurus. I’m determined, stubborn, and hard-headed, which are the character defects of being a Taurus. I’ve learned to like and accept myself as I’ve gotten older. I’m proud of the person that I am now. It’s taken a lot of work and hard knocks to get here. Spiritual path? I’m a good person at heart. I can have setbacks, but I have a strong faith in God which helps me get through tough times. The older I get, the more I work on myself spiritually to be a kinder, better, more compassionate person. I don’t always measure up, that’s for sure. But I try to be aware of setting that goal for myself. Your dream? I love my kids and grandkids and, more than anything, I want to see them be happy and healthy, and successful. If I could see that, I would die happy. Not anytime soon, thank you. G

Tatiana Luter invites me for coffee at the San Vicente Bungalows, the trendy LA private club for the cool kids—think Soho House meets the Chateau Marmont. The place matches Taty’s vibe: Chill, low-key and reserved, dabbed with a whole lotta sexy. She shares about her life during our GENLUX Two-Word Interview.™ —SK

Your breakfast? I skipped breakfast and ate some vegetarian nuggets at my mom’s house. I usually do smoothies with vegan powder and collagen; it produces amazing results for my skin. Your birthplace? I was born in Milan, and I’m half-American and halfItalian. My great-grandmother was Ukrainian. School Bullying? The boys teased me for my high forehead, Adam’s apple, and big chin. There was this girl named Greta who bullied me when I was six years old. It was so bad. We would take the school bus for 30 minutes, and she would tell me, ‘I will kill you. I don’t want to see your face, and you need to hide in the bus.’ So I quit taking the bus. I had nightmares about this child. I was a little kid sitting in the back, and she would come to threaten me. Today, cyberbullying is a problem. That’s what worries me about social media— it’s getting out of control. Luckily my daughter isn’t spending a lot of time on it. It’s scary all these suicide challenges and online games. I made a rule on Sundays that we won’t use our phones. It’s not healthy to be living 24-7 with your phone. Your family? My parents met while my dad was modeling in the 90s, and

my mom worked for Cosmopolitan. I’m the oldest child. My sister is studying at Ole Miss, and my brother is in Dallas studying to be a broker. I have a beautiful daughter, 13, and my son is now two and a half. College days? I went to a top film school in Italy, where all of my colleagues are now big stars. After studying for two years, I came to America when I was 25. When I arrived the only people I knew were Douglas Kirkland and his wife, Françoise, because they photographed me for Glamour magazine in Italy. Beauty secret? I make my own masks using avocado, and I use olive oil on my skin—a beauty secret of Sophia Loren. I just received some Algenist cream from Revolve, which is really good. My daughter is the skincare addict in the family. Makeup secret? I don’t use much makeup. When I was 13, I learned to do a cateye, so I can do that in the car with my eyes closed. Handbag contents? In my Titziano Colasante pochette are some Dior Rouge 999 red lipstick, credit cards, a driver’s license, and some KamaliKulture glasses. Your passion? Horseback riding. I used to do

jumping. My mom has a house in Ojai, so I love to go there to ride. I also enjoy hiking. Happy place? Home with the kids. Wherever my kids are is my happy place. Guilty pleasure? I’m a coffee addict! I have six to eight cups a day. I’m funny about how I drink my coffee—I take my time and enjoy it. My favorite is Lavazza. Closet faves? My CHANEL ankle boots, my mom’s leather jacket I’m wearing today, and a collection of leggings—that’s all I wear. I’m obsessed with anything with stars. Binge-watching? All of them! Emily in Paris, Stranger Things, Euphoria, and I also like dramatic series like Dexter, Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones, and I love West World. Oh, and Ozark and The Queen’s Gambit. Favorite Actresses? Susan Sarandon, Wynona Rider, Julia Roberts, Jessica Chastain, Keira Knightley, and Natalie Portman. Craft honing? I can do a pretty good French accent, but I need to work on my British one. Childhood crush? David Beckham. Fantasy getaway? I would transport to medieval

times like in Game of Thrones and be royalty. I’m sorry, but let’s dream! Sage advice? I would advise my younger self to: 1. Trust your instincts and don’t overthink. 2. Don’t listen to too many people’s opinions. 3. Don’t waste too much time—be decisive. 4. Follow through. DNA change? I have naturally curly hair and wish it was straight or wavy. I also wish I were two inches taller! I really wanted to be a model when I was younger, but I was always too short. Character change? When someone is not nice, I struggle with letting things go. I have to learn to let go. I also want to be less naïve. Italian benefits? In Italy, the culture is a little warmer than here. For instance, if someone walks into a party at an Italian house, you say hello to everyone, or the host introduces you to everyone. In Italy, the country stops in the summer for two weeks—I wish they did that here. Biggest regret? Not learning more languages like French. My daughter speaks three languages. My son will speak four. Your cause? I’m an activist for animal rights. I produced a conceptual documentary about

endangered animals in collaboration with Earth League International (ELI), featured in The Ivory Game. It stars 25 actresses, including Paz Vega, who portray different animals. Andrea Crosta, the CEO of ELI, is a badass. He spends his time in nature doing missions worldwide to protect animals. Think about it. When an elephant is poached, the people who kill the animal are convicted and jailed, but Andrea’s work is getting to the top of the chain—finding those responsible for moving the cards from their mansions. The executors of the crime. Andrea’s main tool is cyber intelligence. He’s passionate about his mission to help these animals. That’s why he has the support of Dr. Jane Goodall and other influential supporters of his non-profit. Biggest fear? Flying! I do fly, but I wouldn’t say I like to fly alone. I’m scared of turbulence. That’s why my daughter was born. I once missed my plane to return to Dallas, so I stayed in Italy and flew with her father to Mexico City, where she was conceived. I guess sometimes, missing a plane can be a good thing. G

To earn money for university, Venezuelan-born beauty Rosmary Altuve Gomez took on a modeling assignment, and the script flipped. What was to be a springboard to a career became the career—and a successful one—finding herself tapped for top brands like L’Oreal, Revlon, Pinko, Intimissimi, and more. As she shares during our GENLUX Two-Word Interview ™ her passion is helping important causes dear to her heart.

Your GPS: I’m in an apartment in New York, and my home is in Mexico City. Your Hometown? I’m Venezuelan. I was born in Bocono, Trujillo, a small town about a 7-hour car ride from the capital of Caracas, Venezuela. My childhood was very happy, and my parents did their best to give me a good education. Your breakfast? I had a ham, cheese, and avocado sandwich with a cup of coffee, and I always have coffee to wake up. Your sign? Aries. I’m a fire sign—so I light up pretty quickly. Everything makes me explode. Model’s life? I didn’t decide to be a model— life pushed me to do it. When I started university, I worked during the day and studied at night. There came the point when I couldn’t afford university, and an opportunity came up to model in Chile for six months. I earned enough to finish university, but another option came up: going to Mexico City to model. I then traveled to Paris, London, Milan, Miami, and New York.

Model agencies? I’m with Monster in Milan; Premier in London; Premium in Paris; Elite in Spain; and Fusion in NY. Brand campaigns? I’ve modeled for Intimissimi, L’Oréal, Giovanni Raspini, Mos Mosh, Revlon, Chevignon, Ripley, Kiko Milán, Pinko, Twinset, Nasty Gal, Iro, Urban Outfitters, and Calvin Klein. Physical change? I wouldn’t change anything. I’m pretty happy with how I am.

Three blessings? 1. Being able to travel; 2. My health; 3. Being able to help others and being aware of their needs. Travel advice? When I visit a new country, I try to see more than the usual places people visit, and it helps me understand their culture, needs, and opportunities to do good. I would suggest the same for my fellow travelers. Favorite movie? Alice in Wonderland

Favorite getaway? Either London or Mexico City. When I retire, I’d like to move to the beach like La Paz, a beautiful place.

Guilty pleasure? Eating too much! I love salty food like pizza, hamburgers, and hot dogs! Oh, and pasta. Oh, my gosh!

Charity work? I’m passionate about a number of challenges facing our world. 1. The indigenous peoples and their lack of basic human rights; 2. Ocean conservation fishing policies and the protection of our coral reefs; and 3. Climate change and our need for renewable energies. We also have a plastic waste problem in East Africa slipping under the radar. Please contribute to Planet Buy Back, which helps eradicate ocean plastic and other important causes.

Character change? I have a strong personality, so I’d like to be less intense with others. Fantasy dinner? I don’t have a chance to see my friends often because I’m always traveling, so I would have a long dinner with all of my girlfriends. Spirit animal? A white horse. Reincarnation desire? I’d like to come back with more consciousness being able to remember my past lives. G

EDITOR’S PICKS Like Ri-Ri, I’m addicted to this voluptuous Fenty Skin lip oil! I also love that FENTY SKIN is 100% clean, vegan, and cruelty-free. Do you have a favorite scent this summer? I know, I do, and it’s called Wind Flowers by The House of Creed. The sweet Indian jasmine wrapped around the Tunisian orange blossom and fruity peach keeps my spirit up, while a warm flurry of sandalwood, praline, and musk tones brings to life the luminous fragrance. 84 GENLUX SUMMER 2022

It’s Rule Britannia time in London as flags are flying, Corgis are the fashionable dog, and we celebrate Her Majesty’s powerful time on the throne. At 96, she is an inspiration to us all to get up and carry on. Last week, she displayed her sense of humour by having tea with Paddington Bear. Throughout the UK, we honour her greatness through charity and private events. It’s been a very patriotic time, and I raised the Union Jack and wore a purple coat by Debbie Von Bismark. I watched our British Air Force fly in sequence. I was thrilled to catch up with friends visiting from America like artist Nigel Daly and his charming wife, Louise. We sang along the streets and went to The Mall. I lunched and laughed with Lady Victoria Hervey, and took a Tuk Tuk through our streets with man-about-town George Blodwell. Ascot starts this week, so I shall wear a new top hat by Victoria Grant and tails. As you know, I am not one to wear a conventional dress covered with flowers. Today, the vintage website 1stDibs caught my attention offering an AW1993 Atelier Versace museum-quality gown showcased by Stephanie Seymour in their campaign that season. Bit of sticker shock eyeing its pricetag of $150K. Perhaps more of a shock to think that this dress debuted almost 30 years ago already! I’m also fancying these Yohji Yamamoto ensembles or the new GUCCI cat-eye sunglasses or a pair of Saint Laurent sky-high platform booties—any, or all, would be a more prudent purchase than the Versace. Have a lovely summer, my dear friends. G

GENLUX Five Summertime Essentials

My life’s mission is to create a beautiful future for your skin. Summertime requires us to stock up on the essential product—Sunscreen! Below you will find a few of my favorite products that I like to have on hand during these hotter months. -Ninka B @ninkabskin

4. REAPPLY, REAPPLY, REAPPLY!

1. PROTECT YOUR LIPS

The skin on the lips is prone to sunburns and dryness. My season’s favorite is the Colorescience Lip Shine with SPF 35. It wraps your lips with nourishing hydration and protection. There are several colors to choose from, and it’s the perfect item to keep in your pool or beach bag. Ninka B recommends: Colorescience Lip Shine SPF 35, $34, colorescience.com

Choose water-resistant sunscreens and reapply often. Sunscreen stays active for 80 minutes or less while swimming or sweating, so reapplying is even more critical while being active outside. I’m a big fan of EltaMD Sunscreens for the body. Ninka B. recommends: EltaMD UV Sport Broad-Spectrum SPF 50, $53, dermstore.com.

2. FLAWLESS PROTECTION

Hands down, my favorite sunscreen for facial skin is ZO Skin Health

Sunscreen+Primer SPF 30. It blurs out pores and smoothes texture and skin’s imperfection. Heavy makeup is not needed during summertime, especially when you have this particular sunscreen! Ninka B. recommends: ZO Skin Health, Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30, $67, zoskinhealth.com

5. SUMMER HAT

3. BRONZED SKIN

Something about looking sun-kissed symbolizes a great vacation, making us feel more radiant. These days, we don’t have to lay in the sun to achieve a golden tan. Try Sircuit Soleil+ firming mineral self-tanner. This luxurious lotion leaves the skin with a beautiful tone with added science-forward ingredients to promote skin firmness. Must-have! Ninka B. recommends: SIRCUIT SOLEIL+ firming mineral self tanner, $48, sircuitskin.com

Nothing’s more irresistible than a beautiful, well-fitted summer hat—even more so if it has built-in sun protection like the Lady Daphne by Eric Javits, a two-tone fedora featuring a generous 4.5” brim that provides protective shade for your head, face, neck, and ears. It is rated 50+ UPF, effectively blocking up to 95% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays to help prevent sunburn and overexposure—plus it looks great on everyone! Ninka B. recommends: Eric Javits Lady Daphne, $450, ericjavits.com

❣ Protecting skin integrity and preventing sun damage is the mantra for this season. I wish you a fantastic summer adventure!

GENLUX Sunburn Happens

It happens to all of us, especially the young ones: We forget to apply sunscreen and boom—sunburn! During these hot summer days, the sun’s rays are brutal and can injure sensitive skin in minutes. We get damage control tips from skincare expert Michael Wolfgeher at sircuitskin.com. Here are his four Skin Rescue Tips to pin on your fridge.

1) TAKE A COOL BATH OR SHOWER... not a

scratch or scrub away flaking skin can sometimes be overwhelming as the skin heals and recovers. The best way to soothe itchy, peeling skin is to apply a thick, hydrating crème or mask. For instant relief, apply a thick layer of Sircuitskin’s Cool Lychee Wa™+, and let the soothing, nourishing relief from Lychee fruit and Mangosteen set in. Wipe away with a cool compress after 15-20 minutes.

TIP: As the tub fills up, toss a few chamomile tea bags into the water for additional soothing benefits.

2) KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED!

TIP: Before bed, apply a thin layer of Cool Lychee Wa™+ and sleep in it. You will wake up with moisturized, revitalized, happy skin!

Immediately after sun exposure, apply an aloe-based moisturizer with a cooling effect like Sircuitskin’s Cool Aid™ Gel Moisturizer. This lightweight, soothing moisturizer will calm and nourish the skin while providing skinstrengthening ingredients to calm inflammation and keep your skin healthy.

3) REMEMBER: ANTI-OXIDANTS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND! When your skin is

We suggest spritzing your skin throughout the day with Sircuitskin’s Molecular Mist™+.. This lightweight mist will infuse your skin with silky hydration and intelligent, high-tech anti-oxidants like Spin Trap and L-Ergothioneine®,, making it the perfect after-sun solution.

Year-Round Garden Goodness

Summer yields tons of warm-season vegetables. If you grow your own, you’re probably inundated with a surplus of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, and warm-season produce. Even my neighbors say, ‘Enough!’ By Kelly Emberg - The Model Gardener

Trust me, I have shoved many overflowing bags of veggies in the unassuming arms of whoever dared to step foot in my house. Even my neighbors, who gladly welcomed my fresh produce early in the season, kindly let me know they have had enough. The challenge is to figure out what to do with the surplus? Stop worrying about wasting your bounty! There are perks when it comes to a bumper crop! Extend your summer harvest for months to come. Start preserving now!

PICK AT THE PEAK

First things first! If you want tastier produce pumped with nutrients and moisture with a longer shelf life, harvest early in the day while it is cool. For those early birds, picking your vegetables 6 hours before sunrise is the optimum time. Once the sun hits the fruits and veggies, their pulp’s temperature rises. Every 5 degrees of lower temperature, when harvested, can extend the life of your veggies for three days. Be careful with those tasty homegrown tomatoes. If you pick them overheated, once cooled, you’ll find your tomato’s texture grainy and mushy with less flavor.

CURE YOUR CROPS

Not all vegetables can be cured and stored. Select ones that can, like dried beans, garlic, onions, potatoes, and winter squash. Once harvested and cured, they will keep for months. Curing entails holding your produce at a specific temperature for a short time, then moving them to a cool, dry place for storage. Curing in warm temperatures allows the outer skins of vegetables to dry and harden before storage, preventing rot. It also heals your produce’s blemishes and wounds through this process.

98 GENLUX SUMMER 2022

For long-term storage of garden vegetables, here’s what you need to know: 1. To minimize excess moisture, harvest after a few days of no rain. 2. Don’t harvest too early or too late, only when mature. 3. Always pick the best quality specimens for storage. 4. Avoid bruising or scratching. 5. Once harvested, do not let them sit in the sun. Cure your vegetables in shallow and wellventilated containers, in a covered, wellventilated area, with a steady temperature. A basement, shed, or even an attic would work. AIR CURING Air curing involves drying the moisture out of plant material. Sagebrush, bay leaves, tea leaves, and herbs are ideal for curing. At the end of a season, harvest these plants by cutting the stem at the base and hanging the entire plant upside down in a wellventilated dark shed, barn, or garage for a month to dry them completely. Or, harvest small leaves and stems from the plant, then bundle them together to cure and hang in a closet or a dark location. DEHYDRATION Dehydration was the earliest form of food curing. Because curing increases the concentration and decreases the water in food, the microbe growth that causes food to spoil is impossible. You can dry your produce the good old-fashioned way by the sun, or you can invest in a dehydrator and not wait for the weather.

SUN DRYING Drying fruit that isn’t sweet or completely ripe intensifies the sugar content and flavor. When drying in the sun, place your fruit on a rack and space the fruit, so they don’t touch, then cover them with a double layer of cheesecloth, protecting them from hungry birds and insects. Wait for those hot days and nights when the air is at least 95 degrees to prevent fungus. Daily, turn the fruit over by placing a second rack on top and flipping it over. Dry to desired texture and flavor, then store in airtight containers. DEHYDRATOR Electric dehydrators allow you to control the temperature and proper air circulation, making the process foolproof. Save summer herbs, create homemade fruit roll-ups, dry fruits and vegetables and experiment with flavor combinations. FREEZE WITH EASE You can freeze pretty much anything and use it at a later date. A great way to extend the season! TOMATOES The best way to keep those tasty tomatoes beyond their season is to freeze them! Wash them, cut out the core and into quarters, and freeze on a flat surface where the pieces don’t touch. Once frozen, store in the freezer in a large plastic bag. When they thaw, the skins slip off easily. SMALL BATCHES Chop peppers, cube summer squash, cut kernels off the cob, and harvest whole green beans: put in lidded containers, freeze them, and use in soups, pasta, or other dishes through the winter season!

KELLY’S SUMMER MUSTHAVES

WINTER SQUASH Curing a butternut squash improves its flavor dramatically. Pick butternut squash when it turns tan and an acorn squash when its underside turns a deep orange, but both will taste much better once it has been cured a month later.

POTATOES – between 55 to 65 degrees and 95 percent humidity for two to three weeks. SWEET POTATOES – between 85 to 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity for a week. WINTER SQUASH – between 80 to 85 degrees for two to three weeks at 70 percent humidity.

Ball® Regular Mouth 12-Pack 1-Pint glass canning jars, $14.99, Bed Bath and Beyond

SHELLED BEANS AND PEAS - Shell them when their pods are thoroughly dry. Keep them

warm and dry for up to two weeks.

FREEZING FRESH HERBS Freezing herbs is fast, easy, and retains much of fresh herbs’ taste, smell, and nutrients. Not so pretty when thawed for salads or garnish, frozen herbs retains the flavor of fresh-picked herbs long after the growing season has ended. BARE Meaning freezing herb leaves instead of on the stem. Spread dry, clean whole or chopped leaves onto a baking sheet, freeze overnight, and put the frozen herbs into sealed containers. IN WATER Pack ice cube trays with chopped or whole leaf herbs, cover with water, and pop into the freezer. Once frozen, transfer the cube into a Ziploc bag or airtight container. IN OIL Remove stems. In a food processor, pulse to blend a cup of fresh herbs with 1/4 cup olive oil. Transfer into ice cube trays. Once frozen, move cubes into an airtight container.

CANNING Canning is becoming a lost art. It’s easy to run to the grocery store and pick up what you want. The best things about canning is you save money, you know what is in your food, and it’s a way to prolong the season. Vegetables, meat, and poultry require a pressure canner. Canned food provides a shelf life of from one to five years. PRESSURE VS. WATER BATH A water bath canner is a large pot in which you can boil water. You can water bath foods like jellies, pickles, and most high-acid foods. Extend your summer’s harvest and stock your kitchen with garden goodness all year round! Whether you’re growing your own or buying it at the farmer’s market, it is nice to know you can take control of your food supply by preserving.

On my quest to find the perfect weekend getaway, I landed on a Southern California favorite—Ojai. A lovely retreat destination to relax and recharge. After the painless 90-minute drive from Los Angeles to Ojai, I stopped to check out a few of the local shops on Ojai Avenue, the town’s main street. Then it was round the bend to the Ojai Valley Inn—think bright white architecture, lush golf fairways, and friendly smiles from an attentive staff who ferried me to my casita with a grand view of the mountains—what a serene sight! I strolled the grounds and stopped for a snack and a glass of wine at The Oak—one of five dining spots on the sprawling property. From every angle, this place is postcard perfect and a must-stay for merely relaxing with a book by the pool, or taking on some of the activites like golf, tennis, or a horseback ride through the valley.

If fashion’s taught designer Stefano Pilati anything, it’s how to successfully drape the human body—shaping the collections of Cerruti, Armani, Prada, Zegna, and Yves Saint Laurent. Now, Pilati’s expanded those design principles into the home décor arena vis-à-vis his recent furniture collab with PINTO—the super high-end, 50-year-old Paris-based brand helmed by new owner and co-artistic director, Fahad Hariri. Inspired by his own personal style of draping furniture around his home in Southern Italy, these elegant limited-edition pieces embody an organic yet thoughtfully structured aesthetic. —Stephen Kamifuji
