The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant. ~Salvador Dalí

T

his summer I visited Barcelona for the first time—home of famous Spanish artists like Gaudi and Dalí. Barcelona is in Catalonia, an autonomous community in northeastern Spain with the constitutional status of a “nationality.” People from there will tell you that they are not Spanish, but Catalan. They also speak their own language, which resembles French. I was blown away by the beauty of the architecture, the culture, and the number of things you can do—from visiting museums and cathedrals to art galleries, shops, and gorgeous jewelry stores. Which brings me to our holiday theme: Jewelry + Art—two of my favorite things. It’s still true that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, though we all could use an education on where the diamonds originate. Lita Asscher will tell you everything you need to now about them. She’s a sixth-generation diamantaire; her father is the co-creator of the Royal Asscher ® Cut. Royal Asscher is launching a Sierra Leone–focused charity effort called Star of Africa. Named after the

22 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2011

largest diamond ever found—the 3,105-carat Star of Africa (Cullinan) diamond, cut by the Asscher family in 1908, the project aims to improve infrastructure in Sierra Leone by creating funding for education and self-sufficiency programs. This Star of Africa, however, highlights the fact that the true Star of Africa, its most precious resource, is her people. (p.110) Jewelry in general puts a smile on my face, and gorgeous watches are no exception. In this issue, you’ll find the most exclusive and most expensive timepieces (p.115). We have produced yet another beautiful issue. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of our creative and talented team of people. It’s always a thrill to be working on our fashion stories and coming up with exciting ideas and themes. As always, I look forward to new challenges; but for now, enjoy our Holiday issue.

Bisous à tous!

While not blind to the challenges facing the country, ours, fortunately, has been a different experience. The people are warm and hospitable, and we’ve personally not witnessed violence of any sort. Granted, we’ve based ourselves in Punta Mita, a beautiful beachfront community just ten miles north of Puerto Vallarta. Our children attend an excellent school, are learning to spea panish, and have embraced the colorful Mexican culture. Through friends, we’ve had the chance to meet some laudable individuals who’ve welcomed us into their country. Among them are the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox, and his wife, Marta. Recently, I invited them to LA for this exclusive Genlux interview and photoshoot, hoping to return some of the hospitality that Mexico and its people have shown my family. tanding and sporting his trademar co boy boots, Presidente Fox swaggers onto our set, declaring in his exuberant, booming voice, “It’s always a pleasure to be here. THE IMPROBABLE DINNER Following the photo shoot, we got together at a very small wine cellar, tucked in the back of a restaurant (a big secret of presidents and dignitaries). The guests included my dear friends Shawn and Larry King, Rick and Kathy Hilton, and Genlux publisher Cecilia Moreno. Larry and Shawn kept the table roaring with laughter—tears were streaming. Shawn would later say she felt at one point that we were all being “punked”— that at any moment the hidden cameras would pop into view. Larry recalled, “Truly, if anyone would have passed by that alley, peeked into the room, saw what we were doing, they would have thought they were seeing things—with this eclectic group: journalists, TV personalities, editors and a president.” “The situation was so unique,” said Shawn. “It was one of those nights you just never think would happen. How do you make that one up?” At the end of the night all the men went outside to smoke cigars with the former President. Larry passed, however, citing his quintuple bypass surgery.

Autumn and winter are the best times for me. I adore the clothes and love covering up in yet another coat—this time the new black and white one from Miu Miu. GENLUX EDITOR AT LARGE

MAKE IT A LIMITED EDITION! —GEORGE BLODWELL I just returned from Istanbul Fashion Week. Yes, Istanbul. What fun to be “at-large” in Turkey—checking out their emerging designers’ collections, watching the shows, and taking in the sights and sounds of the country. I was so surprised by the energy and openness of the place. Imagine a city positioned in two continents—part in Europe and part in Asia. I predict Turkey will become an influential source of fashion, fabrics, and design. Wait and watch—you will be hearing and seeing much more about this land for sure. When it comes to style, men are all about their cars and watches. We all love a great watch. CHANEL has a limitededition black J12 Retrograde Mysteriuse. There are only ten of these watches in the world. It’s an attention-grabber. Dior also has a very nice limited-edition watch. With only one hundred made, it’s perfect for the guy who loves to impress this season.

The Burberry pea coat is this season’s staple, and it comes in fashionable colors not just the typical navy, black or grey. Burberry adds super touches to the classic with epaulettes and back details. Talk about classic with a twist. I also love the Louis Vuitton boots with the zip-off ankle spat. Nice touch, LV! In the last issue, I mentioned bracelets gaining popularity for men. I came across these nice-looking ones recently, and when I heard that our troops are benefiting from them, I got goose bumps. I abhor violence and war, but to discover that these bracelets are made from parachute cord and can be undone to release as a rope or cord to hoist or tie up anything—I was touched that the troops could use them for fashion or, if need be, for practical uses. What a great idea! Go get ’em, guys. Enjoy…Love, George

INTERIOR MOTIVES

GENLUXSHOP

THE ART OF SEDUCTION —Vonetta Encarnacao & Sherryl White The role of the artist is to inspire, to shake things up, even if it’s ever so subtly, and release our minds from the ordinary. Art transfixes our senses and offers a revelatory explosion that fires our synapses. In this issue, we celebrate the work of true artisans whose brilliant minds have divined magnificent works. Living with art is one of the most rewarding luxuries life affords; each collectible comes together as if it were a single note in a grand symphony, orchestrating the beauty in your life. Rodarte fashioned this moving confection of a dress that intriguingly channels a warrior goddess. In a color reminiscent of spun cotton candy, pink silk georgette is masterfully pleated, draped and finished with hand-beaded Swarovski crystal elements and a sunburst gold pleated metal breast plate. The result exudes the aura of a female gladiator merged with a prima ballerina assoluta—a wildly feminine yet powerful couture creation. Here we present a dazzling ring inspired by the exotic Blue-eared Glossy Starling bird which hails from Ethiopia. Starring a 5-carat hand-carved Wello Opal set in 22K gold, designer Ornella Iannuzzi has managed to transport the essence of these splendid birds and the rich culture of this ancient land into her latest collection, aptly named “Lucy in Wonderland.”

New York–based designer Rebecca Koven presides over all things that shimmer with her intricately sculpted golden cuff dotted with diamonds. Offspring of the Fendi clan, Delfina Delettrez creates worlds with her exquisitely strange Tourbillon 8-Circle Bangle. The synchronized spheres wrap a galaxy of possibilities around your wrist. We paired the bodacious lines of Blackman Cruz’s leather pod chair with a striking chain decorated with lively birds, elephants, and deities. And their capricious Venetian Swan Chair looks like it could have been carved by the gods. We celebrate Vivienne Westwood, the grande dame of avant garde fashion, for her bold, spirited ensembles. Straight from the runways of Paris, this look dares you to be different. Express your wild side with an exuberant collector’s piece. Violet Obsession is a mammoth exploration of epic proportions: an uproarious electric purple rowboat with oars enclosed in amorphous forms. Intended to titillate and humor, it is an artist’s dialogue on virility and power. Its maker, Yayoi Kusama, holds a record for an auctioned piece at $5.2 million—the highest price ever paid for a work by a living female artist. Like love, art seduces and knows no bounds.

GENLUX APOCALYPSTICK

TRUTH’D—ALMIE ROSE

M

arge, it takes two to lie: one to lie and one to listen.” – Homer Simpson A friend of mine, who will remain nameless because she would seriously kill me, found herself in a bit of a mess. She suspected that her boyfriend was interested in another girl. She asked him and he denied it. So she decided it was a good idea to secretly read his journal. Sure enough, she found something in there that confirmed her suspicions and flipped out.

She wanted to confront him and demand to know why he lied to her. But then she would have to admit that she read his journal. Does this sound familiar? I’m sure this isn’t a new situation, but it seems that ever since the boom of social networking, people have re-determined what boundaries are. After all, if you post all of your personal information on Facebook, why would it be such a big deal for someone to snoop a little further? This is just my theory. If you don’t have honesty and trust in your relationship then you are, to put it delicately, absolutely screwed. Okay, that wasn’t putting it delicately at all, but I don’t know how else to say it. You should never, ever snoop through your boyfriend/ girlfriend’s phone, email, or journal. Ever. I mean really, why does this even need to be said? Why would anyone think it’s acceptable to do this? Why would anyone think it’s a good idea? Chances are, you’re going to find something that, it turns out, you didn’t really want to know after all, and then what? If you confront your partner, you’re admitting that you snooped. You are not justified. It doesn’t matter if you found out that your spouse was cheating; that doesn’t excuse anything. You want to know if your partner is cheating? Ask them. If they deny it, and you don’t believe them, you need to calmly

explain why you don’t and stress how important honesty is to you. Because you don’t fight lies with more lies. That isn’t going to lead to a good place. And if they still deny it, and it feels like a lie, and they don’t understand why it’s important to be truthful, then you need to reevaluate your relationship. You don’t want to be consumed by worry, or you’re going to turn into the crazy person who analyzes everything written on their Facebook wall. No one wants to be that person. That person is weak. My friend wound up angrily confronting her boyfriend with what she found, and instead of being furious he confessed (well obviously, it’s so much easier to confess after you’re caught) and begged for her forgiveness. He begged for her forgiveness! What?? Now my friend wonders if she should give him another chance, give their relationship another chance. At this point all they’ve proven is that they’re good at being deceptive and bad at communicating. What do you think they should do? Do you think I’m way off the mark and that her actions were justified? I’d love to get opinions on this one. (And before you accuse me of being a horrible friend, know that I’ve already given her my opinion on this and I got the okay to write about it. Girl knows where I stand.) Email me with your thoughts at almie@genlux.com.

THE 2-WORD QUESTIONNAIRE WITH ARTIST DANA LOUISE KIRKPATRICK Your background?

Raised in D.C. by a single mom, moved around a lot, survived a lot, latch-key kid, I guess...attended a private school in D.C. on a full scholarship. Graduated with honors (Leonardo da Vinci Medal) from Georgetown University and left for San Francisco with my dog as soon as was possible. Spent six years in Los Angeles, and drove to New York City May 2010 to chase this... to work impossibly hard...to study at the Art Students League on 57th, where when I can’t afford sessions I sneak in. Jon Bresler, who owns LAFCO/Santa Maria Novella, gifted the elevator bay of his 6th Street Soho warehouse to use as studio space. To date, the most generous gift I have ever received. He handed me the keys to my life and told me to deadbolt the door. y first solo sho opened at ulturefi on the Lower East Side in September. I’m slated to y to rittany, rance for a six-month solo painting residency November 2011. Still move around a lot; guess it’s ingrained. Why art?

It’s the only time I feel OK. Art saves my life. Art heroes?

Most of them are dead—Picasso, Max Beckmann, Peggy Guggenheim, de Kooning, Matisse, Da Vinci, Pollock, JMB, Warhol, Haring, Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh. The live ones are Grayson Perry, Raymond Pettibon, Banksy, Cy Twombly, Julian

Po-Po NYC

Schnabel, Patti Smith, Chuck Close and Damien Hirst...whose work I used to loathe...but the man is f ’n brilliant…and meticulous. Damien is sort of the evil superhero. Art goals?

To improve. To keep making humbling mistakes. To eventually make something so powerful that someone is changed. New York City gives you two options: get really f ’n good or quit and leave.

Ali Vs. Liston, ‘64

Your loves?

Music, tagging the Lower East Side of New York, East LA, Point Dume in alibu, the top oor at , the Picasso Guitars show MOMA did this year, the scholarship kids at Silverlake Conservatory of Music, California poppies—the neon orange ones that grow along the freeway, Alexander McQueen. Pet peeves?

Cruelty, entitlement, the abuse of power, the total lack of art and music education in public schools, the West Memphis 3, and Gagosian. Favorite dream?

Flying fast and low through NYC. You’re wearing?

Black jeans covered in paint, ripped black t-shirt covered in paint, really old blac at pull on boots covered in paint. A lady got up and moved away from me on the C train this morning. Prized treasure?

Vintage gold abacus pendent engraved in French with ‘how do i love thee let me count the ways.’ It belonged to my grandmother. I never take it off. Dinner plans?

Best dinner is Café Stella in Silverlake...there is secret non-menu’d vegan gnocchi. The owners (Gareth and Christine Kantner) let me trade art for food when I’m in LA. In NYC, dinner is scarce these days.

RUSSIAN BEAUTY Born in Northern Russia, Olga Fonda moved to America by herself when she was only 14. Nothing scares her. She’s not only gorgeous, she’s also very smart. Don’t miss her performance in the DreamWorks movie Real Steel, in which she plays Hugh Jackman’s nemesis. How would you describe your personal style?

Mixed. I love the laid-back California beach look, but my Russian roots will always appreciate an opportunity to get dressed up in a classy European vintage ensemble! Christian Louboutin What’s your favorite item in your closet? Bambou pump, $795, I’m a shoe fanatic! I love Christian Louboutin... Christian Louboutin, I also really like the brand Vince. South Coast Plaza, 714-754-9200 What’s always in your purse? y i hone, hand saniti er, more acific eye cream, uaphor chapstick, and mints. I also like to carry a book, which comes in handy on the days I have a lot of downtime between meetings. What’s your weekend look?

During the day, I like to keep it simple with a BCBG dress or a pair of jeans and a James Perse tank top with sandals. At night, a bold-colored Gucci dress with heels. If you could wear only one designer from head to toe, including accessories, who would it be?

It’s hard to pick just one! I like to mix and match. I love vintage and high fashion, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Valentino and Gucci, to name a few. What’s your favorite low-price secret weapon store?

My friends’ closets! Just kidding! Gucci FW11-12

What’s your earliest fashion memory?

When stone-washed jeans and jackets hit Russia, I was all about it. Ha! What do you sleep in?

I like to sleep in an oversized shirt and boy-cut shorts. It’s comfortable, yet I still feel sexy.

TRENDING NOW! MAKEUP ARTIST EDWARD BESS How to create that flawless nude look!

Always start your makeup look by applying a moisturizer all over the face and allowing a few minutes for it to set in before applying foundation. I apply foundation with my fingers so I can control how much I’m using for the most natural finish. Concentrate foundation on the center part of your face and bronzer on the outer parts so you look lit from within.

HOW TO PREP YOUR SKIN Tom Pecheux

A great trick I’ve learned along Jouer age-repairthe way is to apply eye makeup ing concealer, before any other makeup. That $24, jouer.com way, if you make a mess you can easily clean up smudges after your eyes are complete. I Edward Bess Black Sea hydration cream, $90, then apply hydrating creme to Neiman Marcus, Beverly plump the skin and allow the Hills, 310-550-5900 makeup to blend right in. It’s the perfect creamy consistency and gives just enough glow to look lit from within. Apply concealer under the eyes to lighten and brighten, then come in with foundation only where you need it. Finish the look with a swipe of bronzer all over and a soft blush on the apples of the cheeks. EDWARD’S SUPER SECRET!

The secret to perfect eye makeup is to apply shadow only in the crease where a shadow happens naturally. Keep the lid and under the brow light and bright. This trick works for a soft, everyday look and also for a sultry, smoky eye.

TRENDING NOW! TOP HAIRSTYLISTS ROBERT STEINKEN OF CLOUTIER REMIX AGENCY + SEAN JAMES OF FRED SEGAL SALON AND OPUS BEAUTY. TURN UP THE VOLUME! MY MUST-HAVE MANE MAKERS! ANYONE CAN ACHIEVE BIG, My favorite stylBumble and SEXY HAIR WITH A FEW bumble (really) ing products I thickening serum, use to create SIMPLE TIPS!—R. STEINKEN Bumble Bumble and bumble

Brilliantine, $21, TIP ONE: Try using pro products that build in body, bumbleandbounce and volume from the roots of your hair to bumble.com help your hair appear to defy gravity and give it more oomph. Root volumizers give your hair long-lasting lift. TIP TWO: Hair-thickening products create body and volume without weighing it down. How? Apply from the roots through to the ends. Blow-dry hair with a large- to mediumsize round brush. Take the hair in sections, holding it in an upward direction from the root while blow-drying that section. Once it’s dry, keep it wrapped around the brush and allow it to cool before releasing it. This cooling helps lock in lift and movement for a thicker, more luxurious appearance. TIP THREE: For added voluminous glam, pop in a few large rollers to the top, crown, and side areas of your head. Leave in a few minutes, and then brush it out.

$27, bumbleandbumble.com

MY FAVORITE VOLUMIZING MOMENT Anytime I get to create a head of luscious, voluminous hair is a great day! One of my fave moments was when I created a cascading, bouncing mane of hair for Sandra Bullock for the Oscars®. She appeared on stage looking radiant and stunning with her hair softly pulled up in the front and back off her face with smooth waves of voluminous hair cascading down her back and framing the sides of her face. When she moved, her hair moved, and took on a life of its own. The following day, it was all the sensation. Even Howard Stern said, “Wow, did you see Sandra Bullock last night? And did you see her hair?”

Free Your Mane restorative hair oil, $25, freeyourmane.com Solano 3300 Xtralite, $159, ulta.com

The Perfect Cut with Sean James of Fred Segal Salon and Opus Beauty What’s the right haircut? First of all, I take into consideration the shape and size of the face and look at what I’m dealing with— for example, cowlicks, texture and body. I look at the hairline to see what shape it can support (face shape, hair type, etc.).

Favorite styling products? For fine hair: Phyto Volume sprayed on towel-dried hair at the roots, or Volumista by Oribe applied the same way. Also for fine hair, Rene Furterer’s Dry Shampoo—it’s really perfect for any hair type.

For thick hair: I like the Kerastase Oleo Relax Slim. It creates a more manageable hair texture. Most important are the tools you use to dry and style your hair: A good medium-size Spornette brush is essential; the Super Solano Moda 3300 blow-dryer with ceramic technology is a must for a fast-drying, no-damage blow-dry; and if you need a flat iron, the Solano brand is the best and most reliable.

The most inspiring haircut of all time would be a cross between any of the Vidal Sassoon looks, but most of all the short crop he did on Mia Farrow, which has been my inspiration for Jamie Lee Curtis’s hair for the past 17 years, as well as the classic bob that I did on Jaime Pressly, which will never lose its cool in my book.

TRENDING NOW! TOP EXTENSION STYLIST NORMA BOUZA / CRISTOPHE SALON, BEVERLY HILLS Ready for hair extensions? Norma gives us the 411! THE 2-WORD QUESTIONNAIRE WITH HAIR STYLIST NORMA BOUZA Why hair? I’ve always loved doing hair since I was little. I moved to LA and started working on Rodeo Drive at the José Eber Salon. Your training? I observed and assisted in doing hair extensions for two years, and when it came time to get certified, the trainer came to the salon and did a one-on-one course with me. I took over the extension clientele and stayed there for about five years.

Custom extensions, coloring and getting extensions done fast! I have mastered the art of giving my clients the best in color matching—making the extensions undetectable. Clients won’t sit in my chair for eight hours, so my other specialty is finishing up a full head in about two hours!

Your specialties?

Of course every client is different, but my hair extensions typically last from two to six months.

They last?

On-location and house calls are essential for my clientele. From busy house moms to busy businesswomen, there’s not always time to make it into the salon. Also, celebrity clients often require privacy.

House calls?

I have a very private and discreet room with two stations at the beautiful Cristophe Salon in Beverly Hills.

Your location?

What’s next? When a client comes in for a complimentary consultation, we discuss why they want extensions, how they work, and what maintenance is involved. Then we move on to matching the hair color and how to care for their extensions at home. I place the order for the extensions, which often arrive within a day or two. Then the client comes in for an amazing transformation!

y mother visits me twice a year from Europe—in the spring and in the fall. This time she wanted to get away from LA for a few days, but didn’t want to go too far. Only a couple hours’ flight, Cabo San Lucas seemed like the perfect place to escape to. This was my first time in Cabo, and it was also the first time my mother and I took a vacation alone, just the two of us. We stayed at the Auberge Esperanza Resort, part of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection. I was expecting a beautiful resort, and nothing more. Well, this little trip was an enchantment. Esperanza is by far one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been to. Spread across seventeen lushly landscaped acres overlooking two secluded coves on the Sea of Cortez, the resort offers earthy elegance with its collection of warm-hued casitas, winding stone pathways, waterfront pools, accommodations and restaurants, all with spectacular 180-degree vistas of sky and sea. I had the most exquisite time ever. We had a two-bedroom suite, so spacious and bright, with a humongous balcony with a Jacuzzi, lounge chairs, and a dining table that could accommodate eight people. And it seemed like we had our own private beach. The hotel is so well designed that you really feel like the place is yours. Even when the hotel is full, you never run into people. Every morning, we had breakfast on the terrace, overlooking the ocean, our eyes fixed on the horizon in search of whales and dolphins which, sadly, we never saw.

124 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2011

I’ve been contemplating taking culinary classes for a few weeks now. Had I had this sudden passion for cooking while I was there, I would have joined Chef Gonzalo Cerda for a few refined grilling classes, using fresh herbs and freshly caught fish to prepare traditional Mexican meals. The food was exceptional—the most refreshing and tasteful dishes I’d had in a long time. My mother’s guilty pleasure was eating ceviche every day for lunch along with guacamole and chips, delicious salads and juices made from fresh fruits. If your palate fancies some dish not listed on the menu, the amazing Chef Cerda will make it for you. It’s as simple as that! My mother was craving (for a long time) a chili con carne. If I didn’t know her, I would have sworn she was pregnant. It was hot and humid, about 100 outside, but that didn’t stop her from asking for it. When they brought it out and she had her first bite, she gave a sigh of bliss. Every week, the resort organizes an authentic Mexican fiesta on the oceanfront patio, highlighting foods from various regions of Mexico, with live music and a dazzling fireworks display. An outdoor marketplace is also available, featuring souvenirs, jewelry and other crafts by local vendors. Of course, we bought a few things. My mother is already organizing our next trip there, but this time we’re bringing the whole family. And maybe we can all take cooking classes, if that’s still something I’m interested in a few months from now. Stay tuned.

ecently we photographed one of our fashion features (Genlux, Fall 2010) on the 157 lush, wooded acres of the Calistoga Ranch in Napa. The ranch is partly resort and partly residences. Between takes, in calm, restful, quiet surroundings, we saw deer traipsing through the 100year- old trees and bright green moss delicately draped over immense boulders. Nestled in all of this glorious nature are 23 beautifully designed architectural dwellings. Each of these 2500-square-foot eco-friendly structures is a private home—a part of the Calistoga Ranch Residences. We jumped aboard the convenient golf carts that shuttle guests throughout the vast property and found ourselves at the private Lakehouse restaurant that overlooks (what else?) the property’s private Lake Lommel. Fronting this lake is a beautiful expanse of lawn—perfect for a romantic afternoon picnic. We photographed our fashion model in many other locations around the property including the swimming pool, bucolic hiking trails, in the wine cave, and spring-fed bathhouse. Lovers of Napa Valley and the Wine Country (and who isn’t?) might want to consider ownership at the Calistoga Ranch Residences, now offered through Napa Valley’s most exclusive private residence club. Let’s say, for example, that on Thursday, you decide to jet up to Napa on Friday for the week. You call the ranch and request that your fireplaces be ready, that your fridge be stocked, and that your list of selected meals be catered and

You might also ask that your individual stock of fine cabernets and Champagne be brought up from the wine cave, and, oh what the heck, chill the Champagne and have it ready for pouring the moment you step in your front door. All this service is brought to you by Auberge—those renowned purveyors of fine luxury resorts. The Ranch also offers their Vintner Member Program. It provides owners unique access to the storied winemaking lifestyle of the Napa Valley and an exclusive insider relationship with the families and iconic wineries in this world-renowned area. This group of handpicked Vintner Members includes some of the larger, more recognizable wineries in the country, as well as small, award-winning artisan winemakers. Vintner Members include Far Niente Winery, Grace Family Vineyards, Quintessa, Silver Oak Cellars, Robert Mondavi Winery, and Nils and Kirk Venge, the highly respected winemakers behind Calistoga Ranch’s private label. The celebrated and diverse Vintner Members provides owners with a wide range of unique, entertaining and educational experiences. In addition to private tastings and dinners at Calistoga Ranch throughout the year, Vintner Members host new-release celebrations, harvest festivals, and pairing classes that are exclusive to owners. Owning a piece of this heavenly place starts at only $475,000 on a fractional basis. At its essence, Calistoga Ranch provides its owners with a spectacular home in Napa Valley without any of the hassles normally associated with a vacation property. apa Valley is a magical place to visit. The bucolic valley, with acres of vines, rolling green hills and pastoral bliss, hasn’t gone unnoticed. After Disneyland, Napa Valley attracts the most visitors in California about five million each year, with most visiting in the summer months and during harvest in the fall.

You can avoid the crowds by visiting at other times, or by planning ahead. For the best restaurants and wineries you’ll want to make reservations well in advance. While reservations are always a must, there is a third route for those seeking privacy and calm in the wine country. For my most recent trip I stayed at Auberge du Soleil, a small private village of a hotel in the Rutherford hills overlooking Napa Valley. Have you ever stepped into a hotel lobby and felt your cares drop away? The Auberge is a serene world all its own. The check-in process started with a glass of light white wine and a walking tour of the soothing grounds, the pool, spa, and sculpture gardens. When our meander set us at the door of our ‘maison,’ we found all our bags neatly stowed, and a charcuterie platter waiting. I don’t remember what we had planned for the rest of the day. (Auberge has the mysterious power to make your other

126 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2011

plans go away.) We opened the rather good welcoming bottle of Rutherfordsourced Cabernet, found a nice spot on our private terrace, smiled at our good fortune, and touched glasses. If you decide to stay at the Auberge du Soleil, plan on spending an entire day doing nothing but decompressing on the grounds. There are few things more indulgent, and the concierge is thoroughly obliging. Another good choice is the Bardessono in Yountville. Like the Auberge, they also feature a full spa experience, but the Bardessono is located right in the heart of Yountville—the gastronomic epicenter of Napa Valley. There is no need for a designated driver to dine at the French Laundry, REDD, Bouchon, étoile, Ad Hoc, or Bottega—they’re all within easy walking distance of the hotel. (You’ll catch the free Yountville Trolley for étoile.) With so many wineries to visit, your day can get a little hectic. Keep in mind that Napa isn’t all about wineries. The valley itself is a jewel. Bike rides, ballooning, walking tours of St. Helena and Calistoga, and picnics are fun too. You’ll have an easier time, and experience more of the valley, if you plan one major excursion per day. With that, here are our suggestions for the perfect 24 hours in Napa Valley. 8:30 a.m. Walk to breakfast. If you’re in Yountville, walk to Bouchon Bakery for pastries and coffee. If in St. Helena, amble over to Model Bakery for the same. Staying at Auberge du Soleil? There’s no

question: Have breakfast on your private terrace overlooking the valley below, all the while glowing in warm, if fleeting, self-satisfaction. You are experiencing the pinnacle of luxury. 10:00 a.m. Here’s a perfect way to start the day: Meet your appointment at Schramsberg Winery (707-942-4558) to tour their Champagne caves and sample their wonderful bubbly. Schramsberg is one of the oldest wineries in Napa Valley. Their story is fascinating, as is the process of making sparkling wine. Their Blanc de Noir and late disgorged sparklers are the match of any French Champagne. Tours ($45) are by reservation only and start at 10 a.m. An alternate winery tour for Cabernet lovers is Spottswoode (707-963-0134). Spottswoode is one of my top 10 Cabernets. Their tours are only on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. and cost $25. Noon. Time for some retail therapy. Head over to St. Helena to taste olive oils, ogle the pastries at Model Bakery, and window shop in the cute threeblock-long town before having lunch. Stop in at Olivier (1375 Main Street) and taste olive oils from the great copper urns. Arbequina was my favorite and is now our household oil. The Model Bakery (1357 Main Street) is just a few doors down. Stop in for a pick-me-up, but save room for lunch. Explore the fun stores in the Mayberry-esque shopping district. 1:00 p.m. There is no end to the good choices for lunch in the valley. Mustard’s is a favorite among winemakers, and just a few miles south of St. Helena. Brix offers Napa’s upscale versions of hamburgers, salads, crêpes, and ultra-thincrust pizzas, and is just a hundred yards further south. And then there are Michelin-starred restaurants—but they are better savored for dinner. Since you have to make your appointment at Opus One, walk around the block to Cindy’s

Taste test: The writer drops by Lambert Bridge Vineyard tasting room.

Backstreet Kitchen (1327 Railroad Ave., 707-963-1200). Cindy Pawlcyn is the gastronomic force behind both Mustard’s and the Backstreet Kitchen. Backstreet offers a California take on good home cooking including salads, fish, hamburgers, and fresh pies. Another option, for another day, is the remarkable Dean & Deluca Market in St. Helena (607 South St. Helena Hwy) where you can put together an extraordinary picnic lunch. Take it to the beautiful V. Sattui Winery just down the road and enjoy it al fresco with, perhaps, another tasting and tour. V. Sattui is just south of Dean & Deluca on Highway 29 at 1111 White Lane. 2:30 p.m. Opus One is one of the most sought-after California Cabernets, and reservations are a must. The tour ($50, 800-2926787) is limited to 12 guests and takes you through the cellars and vats of the winery, ending with an intimate tasting of the current vintage. Allow 90 minutes. 5:30 p.m. Time for the spa. If you’re staying at Auberge du Soleil or Bardessono you can take the baths at your hotel. Otherwise, ask your concierge for a recommendation. If you’re like me, you’ll specify that you want a spa with a sauna or a mineral bath and a shower. Auberge takes only guests at the hotel, but Bardessono takes drop-ins. 7:00 p.m. Take a quick nap and relish the warm glow from your massage. 8:30 p.m. Dinner! So many restaurants to choose from. Redd (6480 Washington St., 707-9442222) in Yountville is Californiamodern cuisine in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. If the weather is nice, ask to sit on the patio. The French Laundry (6640 Washington St., 707-944-2380), also in Yountville, is world-famous and has three Michelin stars. The most romantic may be the Michelinstarred restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, with terrace views of the valley. (Breathtaking sunset view.) Equally romantic is the Michelinstarred étoile (1 California Drive, 707-944-8844), in Yountville. It is owned by the Champagne house Domaine Chandon and located at the winery.

J

ust west of Napa Valley, Sonoma is a quieter land. There is no mileslong line of cars down Highway 29 in the summer. Most of the wineries are walk-in or bike-in–friendly. And biking is something I’d try in Sonoma but never in Napa. raffic in Napa can be swift and thick on the narrow and curvy roads. We found Sonoma’s idyllic backcountry nearly deserted. Our base camp, the little town of Healdsburg, is much like St. Helena in Napa, but more serene with a shaded town square in the center. We checked into the Les Mars Hotel (27 North Street, 707433-4211) just off the main drag. It is a very European elais Chateaux that at first seems slightly out of place in California’s backwoods wine country—until you allow the warm furnishings and fourposter beds to envelop you. ur room had a fireplace and a luxurious bathroom with a spa tub for two. The staff was warm and accommodating as well, offering bottles of water whenever we left and a glass of wine whenever we returned. We chose bikes for our wine country tour. After breakfast on the square we walked to Wine Country Bikes (61 Front Street, 707-473-0610) for a fitting, helmets, and directions. A nice plus is that Wine Country Bikes will retrieve your rentals at Les Mars if you arrange it in advance. They sent us out to West Dry Creek Road, an unhurried lane of sycamores, oaks, California buckeyes, blackberry bushes and dappled sunlight. This is a rustic and easy ride beside the vineyards that includes some gentle slopes. We liked it because auto traffic uses a parallel road, leaving West Dry Creek empty except for the occasional vineyard tractor. The route took us past Lambert Bridge Vineyards (4085 West Dry Creek Road, 800-975-0555) where we stopped for our first taste.

The winery is set among beautiful butterfly gardens with shaded picnic tables. Since we were riding bikes we kept the tasting to a minimum and headed to the Dry Creek General Store (3495 Dry Creek Road, 707433-4171), just across Lambert Bridge and past several more tasting rooms. We bought pâté, sandwiches, chips, and drinks and brought them back to the butterfly gardens for a picnic before heading back to our hotel and a massage. If you choose to ride, keep in mind that it can be hot midday. Get an early start, bring plenty of water, and taste wine with discretion. Our round trip took 3½ hours and covered about 14 miles. There’s nothing like a massage after a bike ride. Healdsburg has several day spas, but try the full-service spa at the Hotel Healdsburg (327 Healdsburg Ave., 707-4334747). You can relax by the hotel’s pool afterwards. For a casual dinner our first night we chose Barndiva (231 Center Street, 707-4310100). My dinner companion squealed with delight when our waitress delivered the “Artisan” plate. It had every charcuterie goodie imaginable along with a crunchy, crusty country sourdough bread. The fried chicken was paired with frisée and lardon, crisp potatoes and a fried egg. Barndiva serves hearty bistro fare in a relaxed atmosphere that marries perfectly with Sonoma’s local wines. The next evening we dined at the Michelin two-starred Cyrus (29 North Street, 707433-3311), in the same building as Hotel Le Mars. As Michelin-starred restaurants go, I would rather dine at a restaurant with two stars rising than any other restaurant in the world. Cyrus’s star is rising;

European Charm: The warmth of the Les Mars Hotel’s 17th Century antiques, four-poster beds, and fireplaces matches its hospitality.

they should have three very soon. Next to La Pergola in Rome, this may have been the finest meal I’ve ever enjoyed. We were served nine courses, fourteen dishes in all, from caviar to mignardises, each paired perfectly with wine selected by sommelier Christopher John. We were most impressed with Christopher’s wine selections. They were neither exotic nor iconoclastic, which is unfortunately where many less talented sommeliers go to impress. Instead they were perfect, classic matches for each of chef/owner Douglas Keane’s marvelous dishes. Cyrus alone is a reason to visit Healdsburg. So many things make for a memorable trip: the companion you travel with, the sun in the sky, the wine in your glass. It all comes together in Sonoma.

PAMPERED+POLISHED With the recent multimillion-dollar renovation of the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel Spa, TRACY O’CONNOR finds that maybe money can buy happiness.

here’s an expression running rampant in LA. Perhaps it’s even made its way to the Midwest. That phrase is crazy-busy—or crazybusy—if there’s such a thing as a compound adjective. It’s used with careless abandon, the way teenagers overuse ‘like’ and surfers mumble ‘dude.’ But sometimes that’s exactly how we feel. My solution? Visit the Spa at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel with a companion. I chose my mom. Now that the luxe Nail Bar, age-defying Natura Bissé facial treatments, and organic Kahina body services have just launched, there’s not a rival within radius! Thanks to Spa guru and director Daisy Tepper, this earthly trinity should be on every Angeleno’s to-do list. A multimillion-dollar renovation established this spa as one of the most opulent in the country, and it’s home to a steam-lover’s paradise: The Aromatherapy Crystal Steam Room, Ice Fountain and Experience Shower, a.k.a. a little slice of heaven, this hot and steamy cosmic wonderland will have you catatonic and embryonic (in a good way) in moments. My mom and I started our daycation with Cobb salads poolside, a few steps from the Spa. I opted to be polished to perfection in the new Nail Bar, and she sauntered off to her facial. I selected a ruby-red-slipper shade for my toes, à la Dorothy, and a ballet-slipper shade of shellac for my fingers, and sunk into the custom-built pedi-lounger.

Plushest on the planet. The mani/pedi chairs at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel Spa.

Mom finished her facial and joined me for a glass of bubbly while my red delicious polish dried. She waxed poetic about the skill of her facialist, Gillian, and the beauty of the space as I made a note to self: Whether solo, or for afternoon pampering with friends, the new Salon is truly special. It’s light and bright, with an indoor/outdoor terrace, choice of complimentary libations/valet parking, and a finger-friendly menu of small bites. There’s a private entrance for high-profile guests and brand new/clean/pristine tools for the OCD. The lineup of colors, by CHANEL and the chem-free line Butter, puts it at the top of my list. And it’s hands-down the ideal place for a glamorous take-over with friends; it will shelter up to ten. All the perks make it a justifiable indulgence. The ‘No-tox Lift’ was Mom’s “best facial experience ever”— and she looked five years younger. Strategic massage and acupressure flushed toxins, while a seven-minute peel and scalp treatment awakened the face. Microcurrent therapy oxygenated skin cells and energized muscles, lifting the brow and cheeks into a youthful position. Finally, a micronized algae mask soaked the skin in essential nutrients and left her with an unearthly incandescence. I’ve never seen skin look pearlescent, but hers did. Glowy and polished, mother and daughter emerged personifying a new compound adjective: Crazycalm. Or Crazymellow. Hmm. Maybe just relaxed, rejuvenated and really grateful. Solange Azagury-Partridge has one rule for creating her wildly cool, sensual and alternative fine-art pieces: surpass any expectation of how precious stones and metals should be combined. With iconoclastic flair, her jewelry designs have been celebrated by fashion fanatics and art critics alike, attracting an eclectic client base of rockers, artists and celebrities. Solange opened her first shop in 1995 in the heart of Westbourne Grove, London. Here she began her internationally acclaimed themed collections which include Kinetic, fine jewelry constructed with movable parts; Delicate, featuring childlike patterns with black diamonds and stones; and Platonic, informed by “the truth and beauty of mathematical forms found in nature.” Following her 2003 nomination for the Design Museum’s prestigious Designer of the Year Award, her work became a permanent fixture in the coveted jewelry gallery of the Musée des Arts Decoratifs du Louvre. Solange was then named creative director of the luxury brand Boucheron. Although her three-year tenure was brief, she clearly made a lasting impact—her hire was publicized as one of Tom Ford’s “smartest moves,” and, as The Independent reflects, “It is Azagury-Partridge’s expression of passion that catapulted Boucheron back into the limelight, adding a little more sparkle to Gucci group’s crown.” She continued her reign of eye-catching collections, and in 2008 her designs became a permanent exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Sebastian Barquet in New York. For someone with such an esteemed career, Solange enjoys the beauty of everyday life and travel, finding solace in the street vendors of Venice Beach or at the Chateau Marmont.—By Courtney Fortune ON AND OFF THE PLANE:
