GENLUX AU REVOIR 2012, BONJOUR 2013! I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE COMING YEAR. ACCORDING TO ASTROLOGISTS, 2013 IS A DECISIVE YEAR FOR ALL OF US. DECISIONS, DECISIONS! I was fortunate to attend the magnificent 80th anniversary of the ‘Bijoux de Diamants’ collection, a celebration unveiling 80 new pieces from CHANEL fine jewelry, originally created by Gabrielle Chanel in 1932. Entitled ‘1932,’ this exceptional collection, composed of comets, stars, fringes, suns, ribbons and feathers, is a true wonder. These pieces draw their inspiration from motifs and symbols that colored Mademoiselle Chanel’s imagination. Their magical constellations of white, yellow and black diamonds, blue and pink sapphires and pearls project us into the very heart of a cosmic fantasy within a dream-like and timeless universe. Are you curious to see what it looks like? Go to my Editor’s Picks page and let me know what you think. I couldn’t resist showcasing the sublime Soleil secret watch. The boutique joins their new East Coast flagship and headquarters on Madison Avenue in New York. The designer’s iconic animal-inspired and colored jewels will be available at both boutiques. Architect Hamid Gabbay designed the new 2300-square-foot space with a ground-floor boutique and elegant upper-level salon. C

arolyn Manno strolls into the Luxe Rodeo Drive hotel for our photo shoot dressed stylishly in slim black jeans, black Michael Kors pumps, and carrying a Brahmin tote. She sports thick blonde hair and speaks with an engaging lilt, touches of self-deprecating humor, and often punctuates her answers with a question mark—like Annie Hall.

“This is my first time in LA, can you believe it? Everything’s cooler out here. You don’t understand…I live on New York’s Upper East Side. I’m an old soul. I’m too dorky to live downtown. I am such a loser. People say I look like I’m from Manhattan Beach…I don’t even know what that means.” With all due respect, Carolyn is by mere appearances not the person you’d expect to see covering live on-the-field interviews on NBC’s top-rated franchise, Football Night in America. One would, well…I, actually, would peg her covering the Miss America pageant before believing she could school me on the X’s (defense), and O’s (offense) of pro football. But there you’ll find her, mic in hand, firing questions at superstars like Ben Roethlisberger, the winning Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback. Carolyn’s a student of the game and keeps up on the coaches, players, rules, and even the history because, as she says, “At the end of the game, you never know who might emerge as the hero.” To get there, Carolyn’s certainly paid her dues. She rose through the ranks, cutting her teeth in the tiny town of Mishawaka, Indiana, where she covered high-school basketball. “Talk about sports in its purest form. Go to a highschool gym in the middle of Amish country. You walk in and the energy is real. It’s very pure at that level. All for love of the game, not a multimillion-dollar operation,” Carolyn says convincingly, until she finishes the thought, trailing into a resigned truth and a shoulder shrug. “As you climb the sports ladder, you see that erode bit by bit by bit, until you get to the top, and then…it’s just a business.” After three years in Indiana, she landed a gig in Boston where super sports teams like the Boston Celtics and Tom Brady’s New England Patriots play. “For women, it’s easier to get a job in sports than it is to keep it—and to be taken seriously. People see that you’re blonde, younger, they assume you don’t know what you’re talking about. The poorest treatment I’ve received in my career has been from those in the industry who are threatened by women in sports. You not

only have to prove you belong to your audience, but to your peers. It’s the jealousy thing. It’s the, ‘Why are you here?’ More often than not, it isn’t the case, but I’ve carried that chip on my shoulder.” As you might imagine, for someone like Carolyn, being in those testosterone-filled stadiums could present other challenges. “Sure, I’ve been in uncomfortable situations. That’s valuable experience: learning how to deal. For example, one pro athlete happened to be married, and he crossed the line. Not like a physical pass—more like an inappropriate text message. Once you slap their hands, it’s over. It’s a game for some of them and they’re not used to being told no. Part of what we do as reporters is exchange information. If you’re a guy and you’re in a locker room and you’re trying to work with a story, you could say, ‘Hey man, here’s my cell number.’ I want to try to do the same thing to establish that trust, but as a woman I’ve had to learn how to navigate certain situations that a man wouldn’t have to face.” Not to be deterred, Carolyn is staying the course. “I’m passionate about sports for the psychological aspect of it. The life of these athletes is similar to a model, who at a young age is scooped up out of nowhere—might come from a bad situation, is thrown in the limelight and is jetsetting around the world. Even my own story of moving out of the Midwest and not knowing where I’m going next—I can relate to that a little bit. It’s a common thread.” Then Carolyn shares about her inauspicious start in sports broadcasting. “I’m on the plane on the way to Chicago with these two huge bags which I then have to carry on a train. So I’m struggling to get through the turnstile and I finally get there and all I remember is calling my family, crying, telling them I’m in this rundown extended-stay motel with just a bottle of wine and a hot pocket and it’s Thanksgiving…and…I…can’t...do...this. It was difficult, but before I could process it, I was off and running. And that’s how I’ve approached every single phase of the career. It’s wild, right?” G

THE VOICE

Last summer, Kristin Chenoweth, while on the set of The Good Wife, suffered a frightening accident. Still on the road to recovery, the Tony and Emmy award winner shares with our STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER about being grateful for life, and how she’s not wasting any time getting back on her size-5 feet again. T

o set the mood for her Genlux photo shoot, Kristin Chenoweth requests opera music—a genre that we’ve never played, nor, to be honest, has it ever really come up. We fumble around on Pandora, finally settling on Maria Callas. A track from I Puritani beams out of the Sonos speaker and Kristin’s demeanor morphs into this fabulously relaxed state of deep reflection, like she’s just slipped into a bath of soothing warm water. She closes her eyes, mouthing the words.

Rewind to last July, when, on the set of The Good Wife, Kristin suffered a very unfortunate accident. Heavy lighting equipment came crashing down, smacked her in the face and slammed her to the ground. She hit the back of her head on the curb with such force she suffered a skull fracture, cracked some teeth, fractured her jaw, and now has rib, neck and hip issues. She was out cold. Her speech was also affected and it took a few months before she could even get words out. Fortunately, one thing that wasn’t affected was her four-octave-range voice. “I would rather sing than eat. If I lost my voice…” She pauses, noticeably holding back tears, “The fact that my neck is still a problem, my nose is broken, but my voice is okay. My gift is singing and if I lost it…I’d be really sad—you’d be speaking to a very different girl. I still can’t dance, yet. But I’ll get there.” Kristin steps out in front of photographer Martin Rusch in a Valentino signature red jumpsuit and looks six feet tall. She is perfectly proportioned—with long legs and a short torso, well, relatively speaking. In photos, you’d never suspect that she stands more than a foot shorter than that. She shares that her diminutive 91-pound physique was her greatest impetus for success. “I think by being petite…no, I’m not petite, I’m little. It’s very easy to get lost in the crowd. It’s forced me to not be afraid of things. I was forced to go out there and be seen and heard and be taken seriously,” she says in a young voice that sounds likes she’s about 12 or 13. “I was teased and got made fun of for the way I sounded too, but I’ve never let that hinder me or hold me back either.” One thing for sure, this dynamo is serious about her craft. A classically trained coloratura soprano, Kristin has quite the esteemed résumé. She is best known on Broadway for her Tony Award–winning role as Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Five years later she was nominated again for her performance in Wicked. On television, she’s been nominated for an Emmy four times: twice for Glee, and twice for Pushing Daisies, for which she won once. Currently, she’s working on a big concert date for PBS’s Live from Lincoln Center concert series, airing on February 15. It will feature works by American

composers and will lead to her European concert tour. When it comes to heroes, Kristin has a few. “My mom. She’s had a great life, but a little bit of a tough one. She’s strong and fought through two bouts with cancer. I certainly do love Barbra Streisand, Dolly Parton, and Julie Andrews—for their talent and for staying true to who they are. Oh, and my dog too! Her name is Madeline Kahn Chenoweth. She just gives me unconditional love—she’s been through a lot with me.” Her love of animals instigated Maddie’s Corner, a charity that gives to many organizations helping to keep animals from being euthanized. “Right now, we’re focused on animals displaced by Hurricane Sandy. I’m hoping that over the next five years I’ll devote more time to it. I love children and animals.” For as much as she’s overcome obstacles, doubts, fears, there’s one she’s never tackled. “I’ve been teased my whole life for it, but I’ve never had sushi!” she says with a pinky extended to vow trying it before year’s end. Kristin, who’s also a bit of a germaphobe (she always carries a container of Purell hand sanitizer), comes off secure and confident in her own skin. “I have my insecurities, but I have self-esteem. It’s something that my parents gave me. I think self-esteem is the most precious gift a parent can give their child.” Back at the shoot, Kristin tries on—and looks elegant in—a Chagoury Couture gown studded in crystals for the cover shot as Callas’s heart-wrenching rendition of Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro fills the air. Looking about a decade younger than her “certain” age, she looks stunning in the MAC Glamour Daze makeup applied by her longtime makeup artist Jill Cady with a brilliant Valley of the Dolls hairstyle by Robert Steinken. Despite the injury problems that still plague her, she’s thankful for every moment of her life. “Life is a blessing. Not to sound dramatic, but I’m grateful for that. I wouldn’t be very good at an office job, so I’m grateful that I get paid for what I love to do. I’m blessed because even though I don’t have children or a husband, I have a great family. I go home and load the dishwasher just like everybody else.” G

I’ve spent the last six months making my film The Gun, The Cake and The Butterfly. I decided to make a film because my ex-husband said I would not be able to do it. Of course that made me furious, so I put together a script and went ahead with some good friends. George Blodwell came and styled it. His cutting-edge ideas matched mine. Having traveled to Marrakech, Thailand, Paris and New York to shoot, I needed clothes that always looked good. My favorite was a black Victoria Beckham dress with white cuffs and collar. I love white near the face—it makes you look so much younger and fresher. I have a passion for simple clothes; I like chic with an edge. Dresses that look good in the day and even better at night. With Oscar season coming up and people wishing to be at what they consider to be the right parties, a word of advice: Enjoy where you are, you’re right where you’re meant to be.

BLACK TIE WITH A TWIST—GEORGE BLODWELL I would like to wish all our Genlux readers a Happy New Year. On a recent trip to New York, I decided to spice it up a bit for Elton John’s event. I chose a military jacket by J Gerard, which Donna Karan loved. Another event was Bergdorf Goodman’s 111th Anniversary gala at the Plaza Hotel. I wore a red velvet vintage jacket and received so many compliments—even landed on the evening’s bestdressed list. Many of you will have extravagant awards season parties to attend; some will say black

tie or evening. I want to urge you to be creative. The main ingredient to this look is a white shirt, bow tie, black pants, and an interesting jacket—don’t box yourself in! Find an alternative to the black jacket. So what if you’re noticed? You might even make their best-dressed list! Lov e, Geor ge

An electrifying encounter between internationally renowned fashion designer Jeremy Scott and the Smart Fortwo electric drive has produced a fascinating new take on the Smart Fortwo: an electric car with a ready-for-lift-off design full of lightness and joie de vivre. Called the “smart for jeremy,” the vehicle has wings—a familiar trademark of the American designer. The wings light up like igniting rockets to form avant-garde tail lamps. The smart for jeremy showcar, a variant of which will launch next year as a limited edition, was unveiled on the eve of the LA Auto Show at Jim Henson Studios to the musical accompaniment of M.I.A.

NEW YEAR’S GRIEVE BY ALMIE ROSE

lot of people hate New Year’s Eve. They say it never lives up to the hype and that it always disappoints. If it is disappointing, it’s basically because you’re setting it up to fail. All you have to do on NYE is have fun. That’s it. You don’t need to complain about crowds, traffic, or how it’s always a letdown. Just put on your party dress and have fun. Even if all you’re doing is sitting at home having your own Law & Order marathon (and I mean the original with Chris Noth and Jerry Orbach), the same rule applies: just have fun. “Oh who cares, it’s just another night,” you say. SO WHO CARES, JUST MAKE IT FUN! P.S. Fun. Remember Y2K? Did you and your brother also run to the computer after midnight to make sure it was still working/ hadn’t blown up/was not possessed by the jolly AOL man who had such pride in his voice when he announced “You’ve got mail!”? And what happened? The computer clock flipped from 12/31/99 to 1/1/00 and no one died. But we partied like maybe we were doomed. And we had a good time. That was one night when that old line, “Live like there’s no tomorrow” felt a little real. We should live like that all the time. (Responsibly) It’s so rare to meet someone who lives life like it’s really theirs. Like it doesn’t matter what people may think if they show up alone at a dinner party, or if they’re wearing something so outrageous, even Bjork and Lady Gaga don’t want dibs. They just own it. They own their lives. Your resolution shouldn’t be to lose weight or read more or find a mate; your resolution should be to just live your life. Not to let it happen, but to live it. And about having that husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/ lover: someone convinced us that if you don’t show up to a party with a date and you don’t kiss at two seconds to midnight and you don’t spend the rest of the evening making passionate slow-motion love to George Michael’s Careless Whisper, then you have failed at having a good year. It’s not true, and that person is a jerk. You don’t need a date on New Year’s Eve. Seriously. I give you permission to spend the night with your friends or by yourself or with your cat, as long as you feel good about it! Don’t set yourself up for sad times. Set yourself up for fun times. It’s easier. All you have to do is be open. G

A cool French bistro in the middle of Beverly Hills? Thanks to Olivier Rouselle, how about right On Rodeo? Unfortunately, one of our best-kept secrets of Beverly Hills may not be so secret any more. The Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel,, our long-standing favorite stop for a quick bite or cozy meal while shopping on the street of dreams, just landed a big-name chef—so it’s about to get very popular over there. The new restaurant and bar concept, which officially opened last month, was inspired by the original history of Rodeo Drive, which pays homage to the streets of Paris. Inspired by a classic French bistro, On Rodeo presents a new, innovative menu of signature dishes developed by executive chef Olivier Rousselle. Rousselle, whose culinary voyage spans three continents, has even cooked for Prince Charles, the Queen Mother and other members of the Royal Family. In South Africa, he helped bring La Couronne Hotel and Winery to worldclass status along with award-winning chef Peter Goffe-Wood. “This is a momentous day for the hotel and Rodeo Drive— as we’re celebrating its rich history and adding a notable destination to the Golden Triangle,” says Marcus Mueller, general

If the getaway of your dreams includes reconnecting with your soul, as our CHERYL WOODCOCK discovers, there’s a spectacular ocean-view property with stunning sunsets, locally harvested meals, and inspired décor waiting for you—the 5-Star Four Seasons Hotel & Resort Punta Mita Mexico.

I

Lap of Luxury Four pools surround the property—perfect for sun worshippers and swimmers alike

n 1960, a young Canadian architect named Isadore Sharp opened his first Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto. Originally called the Four Seasons Motor Hotel, it was built in one of the least desirable parts of the city—the only area Sharp could afford. The success of this hotel led to more, but it wasn’t until expanding into London a decade later that the company transformed into a luxury brand on par with the royals’ favorite, Claridge’s, and the Connaught, which had entertained well-heeled guests since 1815. Soon, Four Seasons hotels were catering to elite business and leisure travelers worldwide. One of the brand’s stunning achievements is the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita Mexico. The property nests in a 400-acre private nature preserve just northwest of Puerto Vallarta. Traditional Mexican-style casitas sprawl amidst lush gardens, their red-tiled roofs kissing the sky. Designed by Diego Villaseñor and Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, the resort opened in 1999 and features 173 rooms, suites and lavish private villas. The property’s inviting exterior is peppered with sculptures, torches, and fire pits. The interior, designed by Maria Isabel Gómez and Gina Parlange, showcases a breathtaking contemporary art collection. The hotel’s elegant accommodations were redesigned in October 2012 and feature a blend of chic Mexican architectural authenticity and the high-tech connectivity we value. The color palettes reflect the sparkling sea, white sand, and abundant sunshine. If food is your passion, the Resort offers four outstanding restaurants and three lounges under the direction of execu-

tive chef Phillippe Piel. Much of the fare, including the coffee, is locally sourced, including the sumptuous red snapper, mole paste, Bahía de Banderas lobster, mahi mahi, and achiote paste. And there are plenty of ways to work up your appetite. Try ten tennis courts, four Fore Play pools, scuba diving, surfing, fishing, yachting, Not one, but two horseback riding, weight training, yoga, or Jack Nicklaus– snorkeling. If you’re lucky enough where golf designed 18-hole is your game, not one but two 18-hole Jack golf courses Nicklaus courses await you. Under the marvelous guidance of general manager John O’Sullivan, an accomplished artist and poet, and resort manager Jose Adames, Four Seasons Punta Mita has flourished. Of the many magnificent Four Seasons properties around the globe, I can say unequivocally that Four Seasons Punta Mita is in a class all its own. The property prides itself on privacy and security, and for good reason. International film stars, politicos, and industry titans all find refuge and renewal under the warm Mexico sun. Rumor has it that Microsoft chair Bill Gates has slept here. If it’s true, he might have been on official business. He and Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia purchased 95% of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in 2007. A half-century after he opened the doors of the Four Seasons Motor Hotel, Sharp, now an octogenarian, continues as chairman of a company that thrives as one of the most opulent hotel and resort chains in the world. And the Four Seasons Punta Mita Mexico is the shining jewel in its crown. G

FOOD+WINE PROFILE: KLOBERDANZ

GENLUXSHOP Jake Kloberdanz had an idea. What if every time you sipped on a nice glass of Chardonnay, part of what you paid for it would go to charity? That idea turned into the fastest-growing ‘cause’ wine brand in America: ONEHOPE Wine. And the rest, as they say, is history. Here, Kloberdanz takes part in the Genlux two-word questionnaire. Success formula?

Luck, guts, smarts, heart. Your inspiration?

I’m inspired by the opportunities we have to be part of a totally disruptive shift in business models, culture and consumer expectations. We’re creating a global brand of good by building a family of lifestyle companies that are making a social impact. We are the inventors of and experts in cause-centric commerce, and I’m inspired to help all businesses do what ONEHOPE and other social enterprises are doing. Favorite companies?

Apple, for their ability to make everything simple and first in class. Virgin, for their scalability as a brand and their ‘hip factor.’ Warby Parker, Newman’s Own, and Target for combining great products and services with big-time social impact. Charity: water for the way they quantify their impact and make their donors feel something with their donation. Greatest satisfaction?

The opportunity to take a step in any direction I want each day with regard to my career, passions, and the opportunity to do something big for the world. The fact that I’ve combined three of my favorite passions in life: social impact, wine and technology. Favorite charities?

There are many other great organizations out there to donate to, but some of my personal favorites are Share our Strength, Snowball Express, Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Movember, charity: water, and Kiva. Favorite day?

I wrote a quote on the glass wall in our office the other day with a marker: “Mondays are like Fridays for people who love building businesses.” Favorite getaways?

I love Costa Rica, British Columbia, Spain, Italy and Thailand, and I’d love to get back to all of them someday, and explore others. What’s next?

In addition to launching ONEHOPEcoffee. com we also recently launched Hope-

Half of all profits from each bottle sold are donated to a different cause per varietal. Chardonnay: women’s causes; Sauvignon Blanc: the environment; Cabernet Sauvignon: children’s causes; Zinfandel: US troops; Merlot: international relief and awareness; Reserve Pinot Noir: various causes through the ONEHOPE Foundation

AtHome.com and ONEHOPEweddings.com. Hope at Home is our at-home wine program. We’re building a thriving community of social entrepreneurs who make a living while creating a social impact. Think Tupperware parties, but with wine and causes. ONEHOPE Weddings is helping couples to integrate a social impact into their wedding experience to make it more meaningful and memorable for them and their guests. Lastly, we’re starting to really develop The ONEHOPE Foundation as its own separate but synergistic entity in partnership with our for-profit company. The foundation is an opencause platform focused on creating social impact with organizations that have a transparent dollar-toimpact ratio. Want to know more about what makes ONEHOPE unique?
