STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE W hen the pandemic shut down New York, photographer Andrew Matusik hit me up with a crazy idea. “What if,” he began, “we do a fashion shoot on the streets while they’re completely deserted. Just imagine,” he continued, “the model in the middle of Times Square, Grand Central Station, or Radio City Music Hall, with nobody else around. And what if we put her in one of those giant clear balls that kids roll around in at music festivals. We’ll call it, Life in the Bubble.” Never one to doubt Matusik’s beautiful mind, I bought in. Good thing. To be clear, the shoot in the ball wasn’t without its hitches. Laws wouldn’t permit photographing on the New York streets, so Matusik, armed with only his iPhone, took 12mp backgrounds and months later, shot model Kristina Peric in the bubble—in his Venice, California driveway. Mid-shoot, the pump that filled the bubble suddenly broke, so Matusik McGyvered a leafblower with duct tape to keep things rolling along. After a lengthy editing process, Matusik Frankensteined the pieces together—to perfection (p70). Next, I got a text from photographer Marc Baptiste. Our first shoot together was a 2007 GENLUX cover with Dita Von Teese. Back then, Marc was already famous, so I was excited—giddy, more like it—to shoot with him. To date, Marc has shot more of our stories and covers than anyone. This go ‘round, Marc suggested we photograph a fashion feature with gorgeous, muti-cultural (she’s half-Black; halfJapanese) model Aqua Parios. Marc brought on legendary stylist Freddie Leiba who dolled her up in beautiful gowns by Tom Ford, Vera Wang, Norma Kamali, Giorgio Armani, and more (p108). I suggested to Marc that we also do a shoot with designer of the moment, LaQuan Smith, and I tasked a talented young writer named Lou Mila Zapata with the honors of interviewing the brilliant young designer (p86). Equal billing goes to yet another favorite photographer, Geoffrey Ragatz. Geoffrey told me about a charming hotel in Palm Springs, where, he expressed, we had to shoot. He was right. Built in 1925, The Willows is one of those old Hollywood haunts that retains an elegant, decidedly 40s– vibe. Beautiful Italian actress Marta Pozzan came on our journey where we captured some stunning photos (p40). Not to be outdone, Robert Lynden (yes, another fave) shot actress Jade Albany Pientrantonio (yes, another Italian

actress) at his West Hollywood studio. Lynden is a master of lighting, successsfully capturing the essence of this woman who plays Rene Carpenter, wife of astronaut Scott Carpenter in National Geographic’s newest series, T he Right Stuff, about the Mercury Seven space program, (p50). As if the previously mentioned shooters weren’t enough— my cup runneth over. Enter Antoine Verglas, the internationally-renowned photographer, who has shot for Vogue, Sports Illustrated, Playboy, and now, ahem, GENLUX. His eye-candy images of actress Kaley Ronayne, photographed in his New York studio, drip with color and sweet emotion (p62). But wait, there’s more. Makeup artist Lucy Crawford called about a creepy abandoned house in LA that would make a cool vintage story. Amidst spiders big as cats, and floorboards ready to cave, the daring crew delivered (p30). Return shooter Samantha Rapp’s bad-ass street fashion feature easily checks all the right boxes (p96). Last but not least, is our beauty shoot with fresh-faced Chrisy Bori by Mitch Stone (p26). Mitch is super-talented both as a hairstylist and photographer. We first shot together when he was hairstylist on a GENLUX cover shoot with supermodel Estella Warren—still one of my favorite covers to date. And now, friends, philanthropists and fashionistas, please enjoy our GENLUX Holiday issue!

Marta Pozzan may have her roots firmly set in Italy, but when she speaks, you’d swear she was minted right here in California. With her heart set on acting, Marta immigrated to the US after college, shed her Italian accent, and now claims film roles. She also generously lends her time to Girl Powerful, the non-profit designed to offer young girls the tools to build a strong sense of self. Here, Marta takes a few minutes to respond to our GENLUX Two-Word Interview.

We’re convinced. It’s the water. Australia’s non-stop export of beautiful blonde actresses presses on. This one, Jade Albany Pietrantonio, was born in Briancon, France, and grew up in the mountains of Sansicario, Italy, before heading down under with her ‘mum’ to Byron Bay. Now, the 5-foot-10-inch stunner is happy as a clam in LA, where she’s a full-time star. Catch her in National Geographic’s TV adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s book, The Right Stuff, the story of the first Mercury astronauts—now streaming on Disney+. Here, Ms. Pietrantonio takes on our Genlux Two-Word Interview.

One COVID-19 year into her 30s, and actress Kaley Ronayne still looks barely old enough to vote. The eldest of three girls, Kaley, who self-describes as fickle, wild, sensitive, passionate, and fun, grew up in Plymouth, a Detroit suburb. There, she EY led “a pretty typical, sheltered, Catholic-school-girl-suburban upbringing.” After a RO NA long list of acting credits, she finds herself in the National Geographic series, The Right Stuff, now streaming on Disney+. We caught up with the Aquarian at her New York apartment, only days before the presidential election, to answer the Genlux Two-Word Interview. UX

Your GPS? I am in my railroad apartment in Brooklyn, surrounded by books, plants, and candlesticks. It could change tomorrow; I keep rearranging my furniture. You’re wearing? I just had a Zoom audition, so I’m wearing a black polka-dot blouse from Reformation and Everlane blue jeans. Plus, gold hoops from a vintage store in Greenpoint. Your passion? Currently, I am passionate about saving our democracy. Three blessings? My health, my family, my friends. Your heroes? I love actresses who do both drama and comedy and don’t allow being pigeon-holed into doing one type of work. Women like Elizabeth Banks, Lake Bell, Rose Byrne, and past heroes like Lucille Ball, Katherine Hepburn, and Julie Andrews.

Childhood crush? Absolutely! Christian Bale in Newsies. Bullying memories? People used to tease me about my pale skin, which, looking back, is bizarre. That’s actually where my Instagram handle comes from. A boy once called me ‘Paley Kaley,’ and it made me really selfconscious. So I decided to reclaim it. Biggest heartbreak? I won’t name names, but I lost out on a theatre job I really wanted, and it made me depressed for weeks. That’s the first thing that came to mind, and now that I think about it, it was pretty mild in the scheme of things. And, I guess when relationships end, I always feel heartbroken. Guilty pleasure? Podcasts, shows, and books about murder. Cheese, natural wine. Happiest moment? I don’t think I have one single happiest moment. I have a collection of small happy moments that include performing, experiencing things with people I love, and laughing so hard that I cry.

Beauty secret? Drink a ton of water. And the Wilding Beauty Gua Sha Empress Stone.

Favorite charity? The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation does amazing work.

Nightstand gem? I am reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.

2025 goal? I would love to own a house! But as long as I’m acting in some capacity, I’ll be happy.

Everyday style? Right now, my look tends to be very Jackie O on vacation. But it changes a lot.

Kaley, please rate yourself from 1-10 .

Favorite getaway? I love being near the water, especially cold water. I’m obsessed with Maine.

Romantic: Hate to admit it, but I am definitely an 8 or 9. Not that I’m romantic, I just enjoyed being romanced.

Fantasy dinner? I’d have Dave Chappelle, Bill Murray, Megan Salter, Aretha Franklin, and Ruth Bader-Ginsburg. Favorite quote? “Feel the fear and do it anyways.” —Susan Jeffers Biggest regret? I wish I learned how to play an instrument. I guess it’s not too late. Best trait? I love to make my friends laugh, so I hope that’s what they would say! Character change? I’m always working to have more empathy towards others. Your hobbies? Reading, writing, jumping on my trampoline, and taking dance classes. Embarrassing moment? I’ve done too many embarrassing things to name, but they include laughing too hard and spitting coffee on someone important, falling off of the stage in the middle of a song, and thinking I was on a date when I wasn’t.

Sensitive: 10!! I cry constantly. It’s good for you. Affectionate: It depends on the person and situation. But in a relationship, I am a 9. Judgemental: I am a 7 working towards a 0. Fashionable: 6, my style has improved over the years, but it’s just not a priority of mine. Competitive: 10, only when it comes to my career. And maybe some board games. Emotional: 8, I’m an actress! Forgiving: 5, I’m working on it. Nurturing: 6, working on it. Compassionate: 5, working on it. Critical: 10, my mother famously said it was my biggest flaw when I was like, 13. Generous: 7, only because I grew up with sisters and we shared things. Honest: 6, honesty is easier said than done! G

BREAKING BOUNDARIES Designer LaQuan Smith is the ‘perserverence pays’ poster child. The Queensborn autodidact – rejected by both FIT and Parsons – is now dressing the biggest names in the world like Beyonce, Kim K, and Rihanna. As LOU MILA ZAPATA finds, LaQuan, who made the Forbes 30-under-30 list, has even higher goals.

“What would she be wearing in New York on a hot summer day going to the club? She’s unapologetically sexy, and she is all about the sense of New York edge and glamour.”

Designer LaQuan Smith’s signature muse, the unapologetically glamorous woman, has always been vital to his brand. Influenced by his teen years growing up in Queens, New York, his love for style and fashion developed when he was 13, and his grandmother gifted him a sewing machine. “I remember I didn’t even know how to sew yet,” LaQuan says, “but I was always illustrating these supermodels walking on catwalks in these very sexy dresses.” With the nurturing support of his family, LaQuan was encouraged to be creative. “Growing up in a household full of women,” he says, “I was really able to appreciate beautiful, well-crafted clothing.” He was always running around the house asking his mom and aunt what they wanted to order; it was clear that a major fashion designer was about to be born. While his grandmother went to church in three-piece sets, he’d watch his mom get ready for a Friday dinner wearing leather skirts and lace blouses. “The things that I am creating now resonate with memories that I have of how my mom would get dressed.” Though he didn’t grow up in an environment where Gucci and Louis Vuitton labels were flying around, LaQuan counters, “It wasn’t about that. Style is what I was drawn to, and you don’t need lots of money to have style or to look good. If the fashion looks good and makes a woman feel beautiful and absolutely sexy, it doesn’t matter the price tag or the label that’s in the back of it.” Despite his passion, fashion design rarely offers an effortless path to success. LaQuan had no mentors or fellow fashion enthusiasts. “I didn’t have anyone to talk to about how to break into the fashion industry, much less start a fashion company,” he reflects. Moreover, both FIT and Parsons, the two prominent design schools in New York City, denied him admission. “Being rejected was discouraging in a way,” he laments, “because being a young black designer from Jamaica, Queens, New York means you don’t have much access.” With very little support, the autodidact forged a path in an organic and non-traditional way. “I was risk-taking and daring, it’s what got me here today,” LaQuan admits. By ignoring the negative voices and continuing to play with different silhouettes, “I got stronger as the years progressed.” One significant advantage was LaQuan’s proximity to Manhattan. Between the nightlight, the music, and the incredibly fast-paced environment, the city helped shape his design aesthetic. “New York has always been my source of inspiration,” he says. When creating new collections, LaQuan taps into his muse, “What she would be wearing in New York on a hot summer day going to the club? She’s unapologetically sexy, and she is all about the sense of New York edge and glamour.” His persistence paid off. Soon, all the big names in Hollywood came knocking. Beyonce opened her first show in LaQuan Smith. “That was iconic!” LaQuan exclaims. Shortly, he was dressing everyone from Rhianna to Kim Kardashian. More accolades followed, including one of LaQuan’s most prized accomplishments: making the Forbes 30 under 30 list. “I didn’t even see that coming,” insists LaQuan. “I was really proud of myself and my team for the hard work that we put into everything.” All told, LaQuan credits the steady growth of his brand to the tortoise-and-the-hare approach. “I’m not racing to become famous. I want to do things properly and slowly.” And that’s his advice to young aspiring designers, “Stay the course. Keep doing what you’re great at, because that is how you build an identity of clothing, and at the end of the day, you can’t deny good clothing.” G

JIMMY CHOO ‘BEYLA 85,’ $95, JIMMYCHOO.COM

The topic of fashion seems a bit trite under the current pandemic circumstances, but I force myself to get up and wear different clothes every day. I am particularly mad about the dresses by London-based brand Alessandra Rich. Rich loves the 40s look, with hemlines down to the ankles. For handbags, I’m loving the beautiful Escada Envelope bag in bright red. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with new makeup brands and practice my Kat Von D flick on the eyes. I try to look like the vintage blonde that I am. Socially, I have some amazing friends here in London who also enjoy dressing up, and so, on Sundays I host a lunch for all the waifs and strays who cannot cope—I being one. At least during this lock up or lockdown, I have listened to a few good books. I love listening through Audible to the classics, and Ernest Hemingway is my favourite this week. At the moment, there may not be glorious events to attend, not even virtual ones, but let’s stay active. With Pfizer’s announcement this week of a COVID-19 vaccine, who knows, we may be back on the red carpet next year after all. One can only hope. G

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT... BY LAURA DUNN LUXURY DIRECTOR

THIS MASK! Now here’s something that caught my eye and makes me think Follow me: @lauradunn Visit: lauradunnluxury.com

CLASSICS ARE A GIRLS BEST FRIEND!!

I was at the Polo Lounge last night with family and friends and wore a jacket that’s four years old. From the moment I walked in, until the moment I walked out, I received compliments on my ages old, classic tuxedo jacket by BALMAIN. You know the one — with the gold buttons and fabulously padded shoulders — that everyone said would be out in a New York minute?! Well, four years later, and my classic jacket still looks brand new and is still rockin’ the compliments. Olivier Rousteing is creating classics this season, so if I can give you one piece of advice.... spending the money on high-quality classics is money well spent. My tuxedo jacket was at the time pretty pricey... but looking back now... worth every penny!! balmain.com

DIVINE DINING

I will never write about something unless I have experienced it myself, but this restaurant is so hot right now, it’s almost impossible to get reservations. For good reason! My daughter, Beau Dunn, who went one week ago, said it was the best pasta she has ever had and one of the best dining experiences. The big hits: tiny burgers were coming in pink boxes and the waitstaff wearing Gucci outfits. I have a reservation in 3 weeks.... and... I am on pins and needles! maybe it’s not too bad wearing a mask after all! Israel-based jeweler Yvel has taken what is now an everyday must and made it into an everyday MUST-HAVE! This N95 with the highest filtration level has made it crystal clear that at 250 grams of pure 18k gold and 250tcw of natural diamonds is the most expensive mask in the world—$1.5 million! Yvel’s chic mask provides a shiny accessory that will hit the market at the end of 2020. Custom orders now being taken... so get yours in now so you too can save face in the middle of a pandemic! yvel.com

BEST READ!

Last week, Good Morning America reported on Adele’s dramatic weight loss. She credits UNTAMED by Glennon Doyle as her inspo for her new life. I was so inspired I ordered the book on the spot. So glad I did! What an inspiring and game-changing book! Easy to read, and the message is loud and clear... the braver we are... the luckier we get. The NY Times best-selling author paints a soulful picture of how to set our souls free. ... or anytime you wish for a radical change. $17, amazon.com

CARA’S KILLIN’ IT I, fortunately.... and unfortunately.... have really good taste.... translation: I normally write about the more expensive things in life. Today is a little different. I found an incredible collection that happens to be beyond affordable! Designed by actress, producer, writer, and activist Cara Santana, this collection captured my attention when I saw five different celebrities wearing the same gorgeous outfit. The long brown plaid coat, high-waisted pants with a bralette midriff top. STUNNING and all less than $250. I quickly

ordered... then the real test came when I opened the package expecting some really not-so-great fabrics. Much to my amazement... not only was the fabric higher than expected quality... it was so beautifully packaged... SO BEAUTIFULLY that there was not a wrinkle on any of the items. The outfit was more wrinkled in my suitcase than when they shipped from the designer. Cara, I am not sure how you are doing it... but BRAVO you beautiful girl.... for creating an affordable collection that’s dropdead gorgeous for the masses! carasantana.com

GENLUX MASKNE—THE LATEST SKIN EVIL. —GINA MARÍ

Now that face coverings have become a new way of life, it’s important to effectively deal with something that troubles many—MASKNE. Those breakouts caused by covering our faces for extended periods of time. First, resist the temptation to overtreat the area by over-exfoliating and over-drying. Instead, focus on repairing and restoring.

Hello, Honey.

Clean beauty is essential to me. I’m currently loving Bradley

Keep it Clean. My go-to combination is Furtuna Skin’s

Beauty’s Buff-N-Stuff.

Acqua Serena Micellar Essence followed by their Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm. These products,

It’s an all-natural dual purposed facial and body treatment that effectively exfoliates dead skin while nourishing and hydrating with organic honey. Bradley Beauty Buff-N-Stuff, $75, ginamari.com

made with clean and organic ingredients, nourish the skin, and promote healing. Pro Tip* Don’t treat your mask like your keys – treat them like your intimates. Furtuna Skin Acqua Serena Micellar Essence, $78, Furtuna Skin Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm, $165, ginamari.com

Treat Yourself.

I’m so excited to now offer a professional grade LED light device for at-home use. I’ve teamed up with Lightwave, and we’re offering the REACT 1200 device. Now everyone can enjoy a professional LED treatment in the comfort of their own home. It provides many treatment protocols that stimulate cellular turnover to improve the skin’s tone, texture, and overall quality— healing you from the inside out. Lightwave React 1200 Device, $2500, ginamari.com

It’s My Honor.

Hyaluronic is a wonderful ingredient that helps your skin retain moisture. Honor MD’s Hope 2O is my go-to, and it’s perfect for layering under any moisturizer for an added boost of hydration. It also has plant-derived bioactive peptides that help protect and repair skin from blue light, which is especially helpful now that so many work from home. Ninka B’s At-Home Facial Beauty Tools

Nowadays, skincare products for at-home use are pro-level, which means it’s easier than ever to delay signs of aging and boost your skin’s beauty in the comfort of your bedroom. I’m sharing my aesthetician-approved tools and formulas to help transform your skin. A relaxing and rewarding facial treatment will help you unwind and bring back a youthful glow.

1. Pro-level Cleansing!

The first step to healthy skin is to wash away surface impurities such as dirt, oil, sweat, pollution, and make-up residue. It is essential to dedicate a few minutes each day AM/PM to cleanse your skin thoroughly. Include the Foreo Luna device with your choice of a cleanser to your daily routine, and you will achieve the perfect canvas for the following steps. Ninka B. recommends: Foreo LUNA™ 3 Normal Skin Facial Cleansing & Firming Massage Device, $199, nordstrom.com

BEAUTY

GENLUX

2. Exfoliate to Refine!

Exfoliation is a step every skin needs. It is the extension of preparing your skin for further treatments. By doing so, your pores will appear smaller. The skin will be more even-toned and radiant. One of my favorite exfoliating ingredients is lactic acid because it is universally beneficial for every skin type. In particular, I am fond of the Sircuit Skin Double Trouble 5% Lactic Pomegranate Açaí Peel. Using this peel will truly bring the spa-like experience with the benefits of professional exfoliation. Ninka B. recommends: Sircuit Skin Double Trouble 5% L-lactic pomegranate acai peel, $75, sircuitskin.com

3. Steam Cleaning!

I never skip steam during in-office facial treatments. Steam has many relaxing and detoxifying benefits, which now can be enjoyed at home. Dr. Dennis Gross Facial Steamer technology creates luxurious micro-steam that purifies and softens the skin’s surface— priming it for the next step: exfoliation. Ninka B. recommends: Dr. Dennis Gross Pro Facial Steamer, $149, sephora.com

4. Boost Collagen! After 20, we produce 1% less collagen in the skin each year. Luckily, LED Light Therapy is clinically proven to stimulate cells which boost collagen production and fibroblasts. My favorite OMNILUX LED enables professional-grade treatments at home. Based on the same high-quality medical-grade LED technology that you’ve come to expect at an in-office treatment. Ninka B. recommends: OmniLux Contour™ Face, $495, glowfromhome.com

5. Moisturize!

Retrouvé moisture locking formula, replenishes as it hydrates. It’s packed with a powerful proprietary blend of lush and effective vitamin-based and revitalizing ingredients. You’ll see and feel the difference—instantly. Retrouvé Intensive Replenishing Facial Moisturizer, 30 ml/1 fl oz, $445, retrouve.com

6. Mask Up!

Top makeup artists are buzzing about these pricey-but-worth-it eye masks from Paris that help the stars get ready for their closeup. Prèdirè Paris Golden Stem Cell Anti-Aging Eye Mask, box of 12 one-time use masks, $925, predireparis.com

7. Catch the Wave! ZiiP uses electrical waveforms to help the skin produce collagen and elastin, heal tissue, stimulate lymphatic drainage, increase blood circulation, and diminish bacteria in the skin. Use Ziip Golden Conductive Gel treatment serum with masque-like effectiveness to help with the process. Ziip unit and gel, $495, ziipbeauty.com

Our Samia Arslane jets off on a luxury vacation to the Ocean Club Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas

A few months before the pandemic hit and our world stopped, I planned a trip to the legendary Caribbean hideaway, the Ocean Club Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas. I landed late at night and couldn’t see much of the landscape. All I remember is the warm gentle breeze on my skin—instantly putting me at ease. Blonnie, the very colorful and giggly security officer welcomed me at the gate. A real delight! The next day and during my entire stay, I encountered cheerful and kind people just like Blonnie. A classic representation of the island spirit. fourseasons.com/oceanclub/

MUST STAY:

This breathtaking property is located on Paradise Island right along five miles of stunning white-sand beach with jawdropping ocean views. My suite was elegant, spacious and overlooked the ocean. The large furnished balcony was my favorite spot to enjoy my morning coffee while reading through my emails. Every evening, I would indulge in a hot bubble bath filled with the Hermès amenities, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil. Love that scent!

MUST WED:

The inspired Versailles Gardens with the dramatic arches of a 12th-century Augustinian cloister is the perfect place to get hitched (keeping that in mind for later). It is a picturesque location for nuptial celebrations with spectacular sunset views over Nassau Harbor.

GENLUX MUST GOLF:

With views of the Atlantic Ocean and Nassau Harbour, the Ocean Club Golf Course is stunningly beautiful. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this 18-hole, par-72 course stretches over 7,100 yards on Paradise Island’s peninsula.

MUST DINE:

Photos: Luxury World Traveler

Before dinner, check out the DUNE bar; the vaulted ceilings and open siding make it the best spot to enjoy the sunset and savor an iconic Bahamian cocktail. I loved watching the elegant and fun crowd interact with each other. It gets busy on the weekend. Right next to the bar is DUNE, the first island restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The menu emphasizes French-Asian cuisine with a seafood twist. I loved the delectable grilled lamb chops with smoked chili glaze, broccolini, and mashed potatoes.

MUST SHOP:

To get into the island spirit, you must go shopping. Bahamian Hand Prints has island-inspired fabrics in vivid colors. Great place to buy gifts to your loved ones! bahamahandprints.com/

MUST INDULGE:

MUST SIP:

Every day, at the Martini Bar, the Bahamian high tea is served. I enjoyed local sweet and savory treats while sipping a delicious cup of tea from the expansive selection. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a glass of Champagne, right?
