Uber-talented Tawny Newsome is best known for nailing her roles in Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ and Space Force and as the voice of the gloriously insubordinate Becke Mariner Star Trek: Lower Decks. Whether singing with her band Four Lost Souls or dropping gems on her hit podcast, Yo! Is this Racist?, Newsome, who grew up a Trekkie, handles her cra with such charisma, she could probably charm a Ferengi out of their latinum. —SK
I’m at home in Los Angeles. I just went to the store, so I’m surrounded by groceries. A friend of mine is performing at the PCPA Pacific Conservatory Theater in Solvang, so I’m going to see the show and camp overnight in my teardrop trailer for the Labor Day weekend.
Your childhood? I grew up in the outer Bay Area, in Vacaville, which is known for its outlet malls and is home to one of the first In-N-Out Burger locations in Northern California. We were about an hour from San Francisco, the coolest city in the world, so we were always trying to escape the burbs and head into the city.
First job? I answered phones for my dad’s company, but that was more like he was paying my allowance—not sure if that counts. My first paycheck, from which I probably paid taxes, was from Hollywood Video.
Your heroes? I remember my mom’s friend, Karen, was a hero of mine, but that was just because she had a telescope and lived in a condo in San Francisco. I would see adults who seemed to be living a very free life, and I would idolize them.
Self analysis? In five words, I’m impatient, patient, loving, fast talking, and hungry. I’m always, always hungry. I’m literally putting away groceries now, and I’m like, what am I gonna make for dinner? But also hungry to live life, experience, taste new things, and travel. I always wanna be experiencing new things. To see as many countries as possible. I’m checking off a list of wild experiences in my life.

first time there. After that, I’m headed to Australia. Those will both be firsts for me.
Spiritual path? I mean, sure, because saying no sounds like I’m closed off to it, but I’m not looking for it. I’m content and open, and I know that when I take care of myself, that’s when good things come. So it’s not so much a path as it is just reinforcing that belief.
Biggest fear? Flying. I don’t fly well at all. But I do it all the time. So, you know, that’s what Xanax is for.
Binge watching? I just started rewatching Mr. Robot. I watched the first two seasons but then fell off. I needed to start over from the beginning. I’m really loving it.
Favorite getaway? I love Mexico City. It scratches the itch that visiting New York used to for me. It’s an ideal food city with incredible nightlife, and everywhere you go is always really beautiful.

don’t even do very much, but almost every one of them, I will send to my friends.
Charity work? The amazing thing about being part of the Star Trek franchise is that there are always opportunities to get involved in philanthropic events. So, whether it’s someone asking me to sit on a board or participate in a charity Dungeons & Dragons game with a bunch of other Star Trek actors for the LA Food Bank. Not only do I get to give back, but I also get to spend time with my extended Star Trek family. This past Christmas, we handed out toys at the Children’s Hospital.
Trek benefits? Being an actor can be lonely when bouncing from project to project. You make your friends where you can, but Star Trek has really been an instant, huge extended family. I’ve genuinely been looking for that ever since I started in the business.
really? So I don’t mind it, but I don’t put my stock in it.
Beauty secret? Sunscreen. I’ve just been into skin care since I was in my early twenties, and I never skip the sunscreen. I also notice significant changes in my skin and face when I’m experiencing a lot of stress, so I take proactive steps to manage stress effectively. That’s my biggest beauty secret.
People pleaser? No, I am not. It’s tough to be fair and to be direct but kind, but the only person I need to please is myself.
Cooking specialty? I’ve just acquired a large Traeger pellet grill, so I’m excited about the possibilities of smoking and pellet grilling. I’ve never been into that before, so I wouldn’t say I’m some incredible pit master because I just started. Hoarder trait? I can be cluttered, but I’m more of an austere person who keeps the space super minimal. I’ll have a junk drawer, or my closet will get a bit out of control, but in my living space and general areas of my home, it’s pretty minimal.
Next chapter? I’m in development on a workplace comedy. Nothing’s guaranteed, but I’m having fun writing it with my co-writer, Justin Simien, who created Dear White People. We’re excited to blend his sensibility with mine and bring it to the Star Trek universe. Hopefully, we’ll get a green light and keep making it.
Guilty pleasure? There’s an Instagram account called Poodle My Life, and it’s just videos of these weird poodles. And they

Your passion? Definitely getting to write and perform comedy. I love the feeling of making people laugh and bringing them happiness.

During our GENLUX Two-Word Interview, Sophie shares about her new music, her passion for helping others through her philanthropic e orts and her hopes to one day land on the Grammy stage. You’re wearing? My black Alo yoga set before my Pilates class. That is the most LA thing I may have ever said.
Your passion? My passion and my goal are to help people express themselves through the arts.
Describe yourself. Okay, in five words, I’m sarcastic, unpredictable, driven, manic, and creative.
Fashion collab? I launched a clothing collection with ACDC Rag and Gloomy Bear, which are two J fashion brands. I learned a lot about Japanese culture, and their teams were amazing.
Band Aid? Actually, the bandaid I wore on American Idol lives on through my alter ego, Pixel Girl, but not for Sophie Powers because Sophie Powers is more than the band-aid.
Guilty pleasure? Hot chocolate. I have, like, five of them a day.
Skinny secret? I work out every day. I have ClassPass, which I highly recommend. I’m really such a yoga, Pilates, or cycling girl. So, yeah, otherwise, the hot chocolates will take over.
Everyday style? My everyday fashion style is grunge streetwear in silver and white. But if I’m stepping into artist mode, it’s a full-on fantasy. Currently, I’m trying to hone in on a few colors
rather than 100 different colors at once—for both my brand identity and personal sanity.
Binge watching? The anime series, Frieren.
Beauty secret? Shai Shai undereye bag cream. It’s a South Korean brand. I don’t sleep enough, so it’s like a secret weapon.
Favorite getaway? My bed.
Your heroes? My mom, my dad, and my grandma.
Biggest regret? Not showing those I care about, how much I love them, and not showing enough affection towards others. And this is an everywhere, every day, and no matter what I’m doing, kind of ongoing thing.
Best trait? I think my friends would say I’m very nonjudgmental.
Embarrassing moment? When I was in 7th Grade, some boys found my audition for Matilda on YouTube and decided to project it in front of an all-boys school of about 300 students. Being sent videos of everyone laughing at it was so traumatic for me, honestly. I don’t think I kissed a boy for, like, two years. Being made fun of for something so important to me was very embarrassing—still to this day.
Bullying moments? So many things, but I was primarily bullied for my eccentric style, which led to conformity. Then, the conformity led to hating myself, which led to dropping out of school and then dressing the way
I wanted to again. Everything happens for a reason.
Flower or gardener? In my relationship, I’m definitely the flower.
Podcasts list? I think this is a little brutalistic, but I’m listening to the Murder in America podcast, which is really good. Also, The Mel Robbins Podcast.
Fashion inspiration? My fashion design is inspired by art in general. I could be inspired by watching a show, or a film, or through words from literature, or scenes from real life, like grocery stores that have a cool combination of colors. It’s really just everything and anything around me.
Musical motivation? My songs are about everything that I stand for, about encouragement, expression, and raising mental health awareness. So many ideas and stories need to be told.
Largest audience? Probably, 30,000 people.
Stage fright? No, I love it. I grew up doing musical theater, so I’m used to it. I’ve toured so much, and I’ve probably played over 300 shows.
Broadway dreams? If the opportunity comes, 100%.
Favorite musical? & Juliet on Broadway is so amazing. Max Martin is one of my favorite songwriters. And then the first play that I’ve ever acted in and seen a million times is The Lion King.
Favorite album? Probably In Utero by Nirvana.
AI music? It’s really frustrating and annoying because as an artist, you know, you live, die, breathe, eat, sleep, your art. Obviously, AI only exists because of what we’ve already created and thrives because of you or whoever you are as an artist. But, sadly, I think it’s here.
Lastest song? It’s called “Muddy.” Honestly, it’s about being shamelessly lustful. I think that’s super normalized in our society, and I’m embracing my sexuality now, at the age of, like, 21. Coming into myself as a woman. It was the next appropriate step. It’s one of my most provocative songs yet, but I’m excited about it. It’s about wanting to get muddy with someone.
Charity work? I’ve been participating in a beach cleanup with Palisades Cleanup after the fires. Then there’s Pacific Heart. Also, the Trevor Project is something I’m passionate about, which is helping to raise awareness surrounding mental health. I also support LGBTQ youth and transgender identities.
What’s next? Musically, I’m finishing a project that’s expected to come out next year.
Five years? I hope to be working alongside the artists that I looked up to. I hope to accomplish my goals and gain the respect of my peers for my work, which will help me achieve my objectives. That’s so broad, but it’s true.
Grammy future? That’s the plan. G

Saint-Tropez, May 25th 2024 – Among the world’s most desirable seaside destinations, Saint-Tropez conjures cinematic village scenes and internationally renowned hospitality. For the second consecutive year, Louis Vuitton proposes a new iteration of the restaurant, Arnaud Donckele & Maxime Frédéric at Louis Vuitton, at the White 1921 Hotel,located near its historical store. Opening on May 25th and conceived as an elegant oasis under the culinary vision of star chef Arnaud Donckele and chef pâtissier Maxime Frédéric, this multi-sensory concept puts forth inspiration and discovery, from the neo-gastronomy menu to the chic and breezy ambiance where guests can experience the summer art de vivre of Louis Vuitton.
