GENLUX RT PRODUCES UGLY THINGS WHICH FREQUENTLY BECOME MORE BEAUTIFUL WITH TIME. FASHION, ON THE OTHER HAND, PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL THINGS WHICH ALWAYS BECOME UGLY WITH TIME. – JEAN COCTEAU Whether you agree with Monsieur Cocteau or not, one thing is for certain: art and fashion go hand in hand. Fortunately, the focus of our Holiday issue is ART, FASHION, and JEWELRY. As time has shown us, there’s always been a close synergy among the three. Many fashion designers found their inspiration from the art world. Coco Chanel, for instance, was influenced early in her career by cubism. In the 1960s the painted paper dress inspired by Andy Warhol’s art made its debut. In 2001, the iconic fashion brand Louis Vuitton began its long-lasting collaboration with artists like Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami and, most recently, 82-year-old Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, known for her polka-dot artwork. Wanna see for yourself ? Check out the gorgeous Keepall bandouliere 55 in my editor’s picks and let me know what you think. (p24) Speaking of an art+fashion collaboration, Fendi recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Baguette by featuring a special pop-up shop at Maxfield with an exclusive artist Baguette exhibition and auction. (p99) In addition, for the first time, the Italian brand launched a special ecommerce window dedicated exclusively to the Baguette world—from the iconic re-editions to unique vintage pieces…even a DIY package to create your very own handmade Baguette. Can’t wait to order mine. (Christmas is coming!) There are many reasons why I love this time of year. People seem to be more optimistic, joyful and more philanthropic. I also like the cooler weather (well, except for this year. As I write this, it’s 85 degrees in late October). I know I’ve said it many times before, but where did the year go? I can’t believe Thanksgiving is around the corner. Next thing you know, it’s Christmas time, which means my trip to Brazil and Uruguay isn’t that far off. I will definitely keep you posted on my travel adventures. Follow me on Twitter @SamiaArslane For now, please enjoy this fabulous holiday issue. Bisous à tous! —Samia Arslane

A

t first glance Stacy Tomlinson Gibson seems like your typical Texas socialite who has it all—big homes, private jets, long, thick hair, perfectly manicured nails and a walk-in closet full of couture dresses.

She owns her own custom home-building and interior design company, and is married to James, the man of her dreams. “I have no regrets in my life; I’ve been so fortunate to do anything I’ve ever wanted to do and have my family’s support,” Stacy says from her home in Plano, a Dallas suburb. The thirty-six-year-old hails from a family whose men dug their roots deep in oil and real estate—the kind of men whose success stands as tall as their ten-gallon cowboy hats. Her parents, Margie and Harold (both since remarried), raised Stacy and her sister, Tracy, in a world of affluence and influence. “My family greatly impacted the charity arena in Dallas in the late 70s, 80s and 90s by helping to fund and start numerous foundations such as the annual Cattle Baron’s Ball.” Stacy treasures her legacy and credits it for fueling her own entrepreneurial spirit. It seems she has it all, except for one unfortunate reality: She’s battling terminal cancer. “We’re never promised tomorrow, so live life to the fullest today,” she says. “Put God first, everything else second, and surround yourself with loved ones. It’s times like these you find out what you’re made of and who your real friends are, and I can count them on one hand.” Her journey with the disease started nearly ten years ago when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After enduring grueling rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, she was told the cancer had gone into remission…only to find out in 2010 that it had returned as terminal metastatic breast cancer. Though she says she struggles with having to face her mortality every day, she’s determined

to keep fighting. “It makes you rethink things you once deemed important, and obviously gives you a whole new perspective on life.” That perspective includes her involvement with charities like The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She’s quick to state her gratitude to her family, who have steadfastly stood by her side. “They’re starting a foundation in my name to raise funds and awareness for this type of cancer.” She’s also an active member of the Humane Society. “I find animals to be extremely therapeutic. I’m convinced that my old yellow Lab, Bailey, played a large role in helping me overcome my first battle with cancer ten years ago.” Stacy has undergone numerous surgeries, including a mastectomy, and continues weekly oncology visits. And although she’s had to alter her lifestyle, sticking to a mostly organic diet, she does find time to enjoy life in Dallas where she spends most days with her mom, shopping or relaxing at the spa, and sitting at home watching movies with James. Her desire is to continue looking toward the future. She’s drawing up plans for the couple’s 7000-square-foot dream home in Plano. She’s also writing a book about her experience going from Valentino to hospital gowns, and has been painting for an upcoming art gallery show. “I’m so thankful for my trials and tribulations because they’ve made me who I am today. I’m comfortable in my own skin, even though my skin is scarred from fighting cancer—they’re my battle scars and I wear them proudly.” G

GENLUXSHOP

YOU DON’T NEED A TEAM OF CELEBRITY STYLISTS TO GET SUPERSTAR LOOKS. HERE ARE SOME OF THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE THAT YOU CAN USE ON YOUR OWN HAIR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. —DAVEN MAYEDA GIVE TO GIVE BACK

The Hair Shop six-piece clip-in extensions, $300, LA, 323-930-4747, Santa Ana, 714-850-0707, hairpiece.com

IMPERFECT CURL

Ever wanted to get that cool and casual ‘undone curl?’ Try this innovative new curling iron! The Verge Bubble Wand creates messy, undone hair. There is a short clip to hold the root of your hair in place so it won’t slip out of the iron. Its ceramic NG technology locks in moisture to add shine and texture. The unique iron shape will help you create the perfect one-of-a-kind texture! How to use it: Wrap sections around the iron and leave about an inch of your ends unheated to keep your look modern. Try alternating directions with each section as you work your way from the back of your head toward the front. Spray with your favorite finishing spray to hold your unique style in place.

LOCK IT IN

We always see gorgeous, luxurious locks on the red carpet, but you may not know a secret: they’re not always real! If you have blonde or fine hair, you may want to invest in a highquality set of clip-in extensions. The higher quality the hair is, the finer the strands of hair will be in diameter—this will help blend your extensions if you’re trying to add length or fullness. By adding a couple of nice extensions to the back and sides of your head, you’ll instantly get volume and help hold your curl all day long! Invest in a good set; if you take care of it, it will last you a lifetime. Daven’s Hair Tip: Try the six-piece hair extension set from The Hair Shop.

ANTI-FRIZZ In California, there are high levels of mineral deposits in our water system. Even with a water filter, it can still leave the hair dry and unruly. Shu Uemura has created a magical leave-in cream with their signature Essence Absolue oil that can be used daily to reduce frizz created by humidity. Curlyhaired girls who want to rock their natural texture can use this cream to define curls while adding tons of luster and shine. Works great on damp hair to help prevent frizz all day long! How to use it: Try adding a small amount to the palms of your hands and run through your curls after you’ve waved them with an iron. The result is a great piece-y texture to your hair! Colure Haircare controls your frizzies with a special smoothing system that doesn’t

require any permanent commitments. How to use it: Wash and moisturize your hair with the Smooth Straight shampoo and conditioner. Add a couple drops of the Relaxing Elixer to the palm of your hands and apply them to your hair—midshaft first, then ends. Blow-dry quarter-inch sections with a round brush and you’ll instantly notice your blowout will be less frizzy throughout the day! Certified organic, Colure’s trio is packed with essential oils like green tea, mango, mandarin orange and lavender! Our SHERRYL WHITE digs deep for some artfully crafted furniture and accent pieces to send your interiors soaring. These inventive forms, rich materials, and luxe finishes add panache to your spaces. 1. The Mestizo credenza beautifully combines new-world materials with old-world methods. The intricate beaded pattern is meticulously hand-laid, bead by bead, by the indigenous Huichol people of western central Mexico. They continue to produce their craft in the exact same manner as their ancestors have since the 16th century. Finished in a high-gloss lacquer that looks as if it emanates light from within, this is an accent piece worthy of the spotlight. 2. This chair’s name says it all: Sit! Designer Ron Arad’s slinky chair with moving lines embraces the human form. Its capricious shape invites you to take a seat and enjoy a ride on this majestic wave of unbridled creativity. As an artist, architect and designer, Mr. Arad leaves traces of his credo around the world: “Boredom is the mother of creativity.” This hammered-steel chair, in a limited edition of 20, serves as a reminder to continuously engage your imagination. 3. Ceramicist Peter Lane brings home the concept of living with art. His work, entitled Mad River, presents a powerful, enigmatic image—part underwater dreamscape, part bronzed tapestry. Its otherworldly feel might evoke the ruins of an alien civilization—which would please the artist. His agenda is to “explore beyond my own vision.” This installation, crafted of tiles handmade by the artist (sans molds), can be customized for both interiors and gardens. Once you’ve feasted your eyes on this elaborate wall sculpture, ordinary tile will never look the same.

5. Italian-born artist Paolo Ulian created the Vaso Vago vase by hand, extracting its undulating silhouette from majestic Carrara marble. Paolo comes by his love and connection to Carrara marble by birthright. He was born in Massa-Carrara, Italy, and attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara. The languid shape of this vase was extracted from three slabs of marble and forms a 24-ring sculpture. Limited edition of 25. 6 & 7. Artist Brenda Houston has had a long love affair with jewels and gemstones. These days her work finds her sourcing the most alluring gems and minerals from such exotic locales as Uruguay, Brazil and Morocco. Under her graceful watch she becomes a conduit to unearth the hidden allure in nature’s bounty to bring us highly coveted art shaped from natural materials. This bronze box is hand-forged, so no two are alike, then washed in gold and topped with quartz crystal. The illuminated nesting table features rough-edged agates from Uruguay resting on a bronze base hand-cut to echo the form of the agate and washed in gold and platinum.

4. Artist Lonney White’s encaustic paintings are an amusing discovery of the subtle nature of textures. He blends encaustic wax with metal alloy to create a supernatural world of free-formed shapes that drip with light and emotion. Upon closer inspection you can begin to feel the artist’s movements as he creates each piece. Like moving through a labyrinth, Lonney’s layered strokes lead you into an introspective, meditative state. It is at once peaceful and hauntingly lyrical.

THE ARTISTS BY ALMIE ROSE

I

have a weakness for artists— writers, photographers, musicians, the occasional actor—and I’m sure I would have a crush on a painter, but I’ve yet to meet one in Los Angeles. If a man is creative, I’m into it. But in LA it can be hard to separate the men who do art because they love it from those who do art because they want to be famous. Here are my humble suggestions for finding a true artist and how to spot the ones who aren’t. You’re probably not going to find your artist at a wrap party. Sometimes those delicate neckbeards tag along with their West Hollywood junior agent friends, but this is not their natural habitat. I’m sorry to tell you this, but you’re going to have to venture to… Los Feliz / Silverlake / Echo Park / Downtown Los Angeles to find these blessed souls. And before you ask, yes, they will probably be broke. Use that as a reassurance that they are definitely not doing art because they think it will make them rich and famous. Downtown is a hot mess of art galleries. And in Silverlake, walk down Sunset Boulevard and you’ll find rows of delightful little ramshackle lounges and old-school music venues, like The Echo. The Downtown LA Artwalk is not a place where you’re going to meet anyone, but you will find some pretty decent food trucks, and that’s almost as good. The Venice Artwalk, aka Abbot Kinney First Fridays, offers a better chance of interaction, since it’s smaller than the Downtown sprawl. You can duck into delightfully cramped galleries, one by one, and observe art like photos of a naked woman

wearing a horse mask, or a sculpture of a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal. These are great talking points. Simply find an attractive man, casually stroll next to him, stare at the art, and then make a breezy comment. It’s good to have an opinion but you don’t want to start with, “Wow, this is just an abomination” because you don’t want to then have him turn to you and say, coldly, “I’m the artist.” But you also don’t want to start with something like, “Oh, isn’t this nice?” Some tried and true phrases for commenting on art include: “Well, isn’t this something?” and “Now this is different” and “So, it’s come to this” and “Damn, I love this city.” Try those. The key is to emphasize this so as to really sound like you have an opinion. The whole thing is that you have to talk to people. People go see art because it’s a community experience. Otherwise you could just buy a painting and stare at it in your house, or download that new underground hip-hop/bluegrass band and listen to it by yourself, a single tear rolling down your cheek. There’s a lot of weird and wonderful stuff being produced by LA artists, and it’s worth getting out of your comfort zone to see what there is to offer. Don’t complain that LA doesn’t have culture if you’re not willing to go see it.

ARTIST PROFILE: NANCY BERRY JETSETTERS

GENLUXSHOP Ms. Berry’s Fruitful New Career

Nancy Berry, who once helped shape the careers of the Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson, and other superstars as vice-chairman of Virgin Records worldwide, is now focused on her own creative outlet as a photographer—a nomenclature that wasn’t easy to call her own.—Stephen Christopher

curiouser and curiouser, nancy berry self-portrait

I

t took me a long time to put the word ‘photographer’ with my name,” says Nancy Berry. “It took someone as talented as Matthew Rolston to believe in me before I finally started to.” Her photographs are, like those of famed photographer Cindy Sherman, predominately self-portraits taken in open spaces. She uses a special infrared camera that allows multiple exposures— up to ten in one image. “I’m one of the few who use a Fuji IS Pro. They’re used in forensics. Sotheby’s has one. Christie’s has one. UCLA has one. I have two.” She couples this with a wide variety of props that she calls her ‘effects’—found objects that interact with the sunlight to create myriad interesting lighting results. The photographs become one-of-a-kind images that, theoretically, could never be reproduced. To ensure this further, she destroys all effects used in the making of an image. Also, none of her images are retouched. The

104 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2012

result is art…or as close to art as photography can be. Berry’s photographic journey began five years ago when the pain of a breakup tore apart her self-confidence. In need of a therapeutic outlet, she settled on empowering herself through nude self-portraiture. “Had it not been for that pain, I would still be putting my creative artistic talent into somebody else.” So out of something negative came something extraordinary. Many of Berry’s self-portraits are beautifully composed, striking nudes. “It really irritates me that a guy can take a photo of a nude woman and it’s art. But if you’re a woman taking a nude photo of yourself, as I do, in nature, just like Edward Weston, and okay, I’m not comparing myself to Weston, but why is it when a woman takes a picture, it’s suddenly narcissism or something other than expressing yourself as an artist? I wonder how many times Cindy Sherman had to deal with the ‘n’ word: narcissism.” The therapeutic side of Berry’s journey, once the dominating part of the equation, now seems to be the bi-product of her success as a photographer. Not only has she

amassed an impressive body of images that she’s readying for a series of new books, she also seems genuinely happy with her new career. “I’m going to be doing this the rest of my life. Unquestionably. I hope that I’m brave enough to continue to photograph myself. Even right now I don’t look good—I need to lose ten pounds. From a vanity point of view I can say I’m not looking very good, but that’s not what my photography is about. It doesn’t matter. I can look back and see different phases. This is what I am right now.” Berry also wants to share the empowering side of her creative exploration with others. “My mom is 77. She’d never done anything artistic in her life—ever. On her 75th birthday I bought her a canvas and some paints. She said, ‘I can’t paint.’ But she sat down and painted the most incredible landscape: color, perspective, proportion. Just amazing. This is one of the things I hope to do—to inspire people, particularly women, to not be afraid, regardless of age, to tap into their creative side. I feel there are so many women who say, ‘I could never do that.’ I say, try! Pick up a camera and see. It’s like opening a new world.” G

Muramasa Kudo is a sculptor and watercolorist whose paintings are in the private collections of Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola, Bill Clinton, and many others. Here, Kudo responds to the Genlux two-word questionnaire. Why art? Since my childhood I have been

fascinated with nature and all artistic creations which make people happier and more peaceful. That is why I wanted be an artist. Your passion? To create as much as possible in accordance with nature for other people, and to live a comfortable daily life in beauty. Woman in Three loves? Art, Nature, Humanity.

I have no favorite, because all paintings are different. There are so many great paintings past and present…so many wonderful paintings. Your medium? Mainly, I paint with Japanese calligraphy ink—Sumi ink—and watercolor, but I do not hesitate to use any other mediums. I have used all mediums. Painful memory? Too many to write. The most painful was abuse; the most miserable was hunger and no love. Joyful moment? I enjoyed calligraphy so much

I was so scared …he drowned in the water. His family asked me, “Do you know where my son is?” I said, “I don’t know where he went after I played with him next to the river.” I’m so sad and so scared. Then I wake up from my nightmare. But after I wake up I’m thinking about my dream. Was it true? Have I forgotten because I wanted to forget? Best dream? I was playing with my German shep-

From humble art beginnings, to a solo show in 2007, to now—having earned artist-in-residence status at the Rauschenberg Foundation, Yassi Mazandi has quickly become a recognizable force in the art world. Without formal training, Yassi employed passion, perseverance and the encouragement of a loving husband to pursue her art career. She experimented with every medium—drawing, sculpture, painting, and photography—and he praised every sketch and scratch along the way. Eventually, her art caught the eye of Patti Birch, a noted collector and trustee of the Metropolitan Museum, who taught Yassi how to look at art. This year Yassi received some prestigious news. She was invited as one of the first four individuals to become artists-in-residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation program on Captiva Island, Florida. Why art? Sustenance, interpretation. COFFEE TABLE BOOK: ANTONIO JETSETTERS

GENLUXSHOP Antonio: Fashion, Art, Sex & Disco

The book’s title says it all. Four words that defined the life of Antonio Lopez, the gifted artist whose works made him the most influential fashion illustrator of the 60s, 70s and 80s. A man whose life was as big and flamboyant as his brushstrokes—Stephen Christopher

Antonio with Jerry Hall by Norman Parkinson, for British Vogue, 1975

I

t’s seems crazy to think that more than 25 years have passed since the free-flowing fashion illustrations of Antonio Lopez (1943-1987) dominated the pages of The New York Times and Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily and Interview magazines, and for up-market labels like Norma Kamali, YSL, Valentino, Missoni and Versace. Living in Paris during the 70s with his creative partner, Juan Ramos, Lopez was entrenched in the fashion scene. Together, they helped launch the modeling careers of Jerry Hall and Grace Jones, among others, and worked with design royalty like Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. Returning to New York City in 1976, Antonio documented the sexy influence of athletic-wear, puffy, down coats, and break-dancing style, inspiring such designers as Norma Kamali and Anna Sui. New York publisher Rizzoli brings us the first complete monograph on Antonio (as he signed most of his works). Antonio Lopez: Fashion, Art, Sex, and Disco, by Roger Padilha

108 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2012

Vanity no. 7: Capucci, 1983 and Mauricio Padilha, is a colorful and brilliant account of the life of one of the most prolific and influential fashion illustrators of the sixties-to-eighties. “Antonio sadly became forgotten after his death,” says Roger, “We felt that it was time to showcase his genius. So much of what’s out there in the blogosphere and fashion magazines today is inspired by things that Antonio did first.” Mauricio added, “We really wanted to cater this book to the new generation of fashion lovers. Anyone over the age of 40 in this industry already loves Antonio, and of course we want those people to love the book as well, but we chose images that we felt would appeal to a new generation that does not know who Antonio was.” The book features drawings, illustrations, paintings, photographs, and fantastic mixed-media journals, and showcases his most iconic works, as well as never-beforeseen Instamatic photos, behind-the-scenes Polaroids, letters, and ephemera which, together, provide an understanding of the extraordinarily talented artist, and convey Antonio Lopez’s enduring influence on fashion today. While the Padilha brothers did not know

Antonio with muse Cathee Dahmen, 1964 Antonio personally, Roger shares why it’s better that way: “We’re able to look at the work objectively without any sort of emotional tie to it to really select what will stand the test of time. Also, we’ve met some of our idols before and learned the great lesson that it’s never a good idea to become friendly with someone whose work you admire—it taints things!” G

Being the younger sister to a photographer like Alex Prager, whose work has shown at the Museum of Modern Art, can be a bit intimidating—especially when that younger sibling is also an artist. The good news is, Vanessa Prager can glean some valuable advice from big sis, like never give up—that eventually things would evolve in their own way, and in her own style. It seems to be working. Last year, Vanessa created a painting titled ‘Crowd with Ryan Gosling’ for the New York Times Magazine, and her upcoming exhibit titled Hours will show at the Richard Heller gallery in Santa Monica from November 10 through December 15. We consider it a must-see! How would you describe your personal style?

I’d say feminine but laid back. I really do love dressing like a girl, but I also want to be able to get into anything… so I don’t want clothes holding me back.

Marni wooden wedge, marni.com

What’s your favorite item in your closet?

Possibly my Marni wooden wedges. They’re very simple but cute. What’s always in your purse?

Smith’s Rosebud minted rose lip balm. I add a little stain into the pot so I can mix it in each time. Steve Jobs’ biography. That guy was a genius. What’s your weekend look?

An easy dress and my pink WeSC tennis shoes.

Photographer: Josh Shultz / joshuashultz.com; Stylist: Sophia Banks-Coloma / sophiabankscoloma.com Makeup & Hair: Christina Buzas for Artists by Timothy Priano; Location: Aline Media, Hollywood

What are you reading?

Smith’s Minted Rose lip balm, $8, Sephora.com

If you could wear only one designer from head to toe, who would it be?

Madewell. I love that line...it’s girly, colorful, a little preppy. What’s your favorite haircare product?

Batiste dry shampoo—a complete life saver, and I very much like the texture it gives my hair. What’s your earliest fashion memory?

I was very particular about my clothes when I was little. I had two colors of leather saddle shoes that I had to keep in perfect condition. This one dress I loved and wore everywhere. It was floral, hung off the shoulders, and had a massive, larger-than-my-head white bow in the front. I felt good wearing it. What’s your favorite home item?

My Sonos speakers. Play 5 and the Connect:Amp for my record player. I can control all my sounds from any room. What kind of watch do you wear?

A vintage gold Swiss watch that says Prager on its face. My boyfriend gave it to me and I love it. Kai eau de parfum, $76, Barneys New York, Beverly Hills, 310-276-4400; Kitson, Fashion Island, 949-719-2360

Who’s your favorite artist or photographer?

Balthus. Also really into a local artist, Mel Kadel right now. What’s your favorite scent?

Sonos Play 5, $399, Target, West Hollywood, 323-603-0004; sonos.com

If I wear any scent it’s Kai. Growing up, there was this gardenia bush down the street that I used to stop and smell regularly. Brings back good times. What’s your favorite vacation destination?

Kauai, for sure. A total change of pace—super-relaxing and insanely beautiful. Do you overpack or underpack?

I’ve been underpacking, but for some reason that gives me less anxiety than overpacking. Something about having too much unnecessary stuff just bothers me! What’s your go-to boutique in LA?

BEAUTY HAIR HERO

GENLUXSHOP ASHLEE NORMAN gets inside the head of celebrity hairstylist Neeko Abriol, partner at Salon Sessions, and finds out that being a top stylist is like being a CIA agent or Navy Seal. me simple things—like how to pin and how to create a base for a style. What are some of your superpowers?

I talk a lot (laughs). No, seriously, one of my superpowers is I love ‘becoming’ my client. As hairdressers, we do hair the way we were taught— styling from the back of the head as the client is sitting in front of us. When a client does their own hair, their angles are all from the front. So when I do hair, I do it from the perspective of the client, as if I were sitting in their chair—that way they can recreate the look at home. Even when I do celebrities’ hair, I don’t do them so over-the-top that regular people think, ‘There’s an unobtainable look.’ My work relates to the client. What are your secret weapons?

Oribe products are the newest thing. Unlike other product lines that require cocktailing and layering, Oribe has got it to the point where each product is a one-shot thing. You can cocktail it, but you don’t have to. What advice would you give aspiring hair heroes?

What does it mean to be a hair hero?

It’s those who often do good, but are rarely acknowledged for it. Hair heroes go around changing the world, but people don’t even know about it until the world changes. It’s like being a CIA agent or Navy Seal, like in the movie The Recruit. What makes you a hair hero?

I am? If so, maybe it’s my ability Oribe Apres Beach to make ‘normal’ people feel Wave and Shine Spray, like they’re stars. Maybe they’re not on the $35, barneys.com red carpet, but they’re at their jobs, running their business, and that’s like the red carpet. Who are your hair heroes?

Oribe and Noah Hatton. Oribe is a star, but he’s still so real, he’s a hairdresser. He’s not in it for the fame, he’s in it because he does great hair and he loves it. Before meeting him I didn’t understand fashion; it all seemed corny to me. He came into my world and taught

Don’t forget to keep the main thing— the HAIR! Don’t go running after creating your own product line, or endorsements, or even getting more clients right away. If you love what you do and do what you love, everything will fall into place and people are going to run to you. It’s also understanding that photoshoots are a collaborative effort— amazing photographers, clothing stylists, makeup artists, models, and hairstylists all come together to make that picture. If you understand how fashion works and make Oribe Apres Dry every one of your clients walk Texturizing Spray, $39, oribe.com around like a moving picture, then you’ve hit it on the head. But the main thing I bring to the table is just hair.

Apply a generous amount of False Lashes mascara to upper and lower lashes. It’s a great effect to apply mascara to top lashes in three parts. First, apply to the center of lashes straight up from the root toward the arch of your eyebrow. Next, apply a coat to inner lashes toward your nose. Lastly, apply mascara toward your temple on outer lashes. This technique will ensure a full fanned-out application of mascara. With an eye-lining brush like M•A•C 210, apply a thin line of Little Black Bow fluidline to the top lashline. Do an extended cat eye and create a more almond-shaped eye.

HOLIDAY 2012 GENLUX 121

Need to add some color and shape to your lips, fill in those brows, or want to hide unsightly scars? For many notable Hollywood women, Jessica Canseco has been doing just that. Most reality shows have at least one “normal” character (or seemingly normal), the one stable force you might even consider grabbing coffee with. Take The Beverly Hills Housewives, for instance. Who wouldn’t want to chit-chat over shrimp scampi with Lisa Vanderpump? Or go bowling with Jeff Lewis from Bravo’s Flipping Out? Or let Michelle Duggar from 19 Kids and Counting babysit your own. Which brings us to VH-1’s new dramafest, Hollywood Exes, where the divorcees of famous men are thrown into the fiery pit of unnecessary controversy. There’s Nicole Murphy (Eddie’s ex), Sheree Fletcher (Will Smith’s ex), Andrea Kelly (ex of R. Kelly), Mayte Garcia (ex of some guy formerly known as…well, you know), and our featured player, Jessica Canseco. She’s the show’s most normal, who really is a small-town gal from Ashland, Ohio. Jessica has two exes: Jose Canseco, the ex-baseball player; and Dr. Garth Fisher, the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon best known for being on that ex ABC show Extreme Makeover. For the past five years, Jessica’s owned a successful highbrow medical aesthetic career. She’s a paramedical and cosmetic tattoo specialist with her practice in the platinum triangle of Beverly Hills. What that means is she can fill in your needy brows, add some pink to your lips, or line on some permanent mascara. “Basically, the goal,” as Jessica tells us, “isn’t to make it look like you just popped out of the makeup chair, but that you look natural, refreshed and glowing 24/7/365.” The flipside of these purely cosmetic treatments are Jessica’s incredibly serious procedures. After the tragedy of mastectomy, in the final phase of a patient’s restoration, she’s able to create a naturallooking three-dimensional areola (around the nipple), helping to boost a woman’s confidence and self-esteem. In other instances, she’s able to cover up the embarrassment of hair loss or hide unsightly scars using special camouflaging tattoo treatments. While her bread and butter comes from adding tattoos, Jessica’s future plans might involve a laser to remove them. Because even though we’re smart enough to know that love isn’t always forever, that 2 a.m. tattoo with your ex’s name seemed like a really good idea at the time.—SC For more infor mation on Jessica Canseco’s medical aesthetic services, visit jessicacanseco.com

DESIGNER PROFILE: KIMBERLY MCDONALD

GENLUXSHOP Kimberly McDonald is on a roll. As ELIZABETH SAAB finds, the jewelry designer is launching her first boutique and expanding her brand to include home products. Last year, her jewelry caught the ear of the first lady—literally. How did you decide to start a jewelry company? I was a curator for private jewelry collections for many years, and I began to design some pieces myself. One day my best friend, now business partner, said to me, “You need to start your own line.” Within a month we had booked a trip to Tucson for the gem and mineral show in search of inspiration...and I found it. What inspires you? Nature. Color. Individualism. Why do you think women gravitate toward your jewelry?

Geodes, agates, and the other materials I use are very close to their original, natural form in my jewelry. They speak to you in a very intimate way. True luxury is having something that is finely made and individual to you...and I believe that describes my work, and why it has been so well received. When you found out that Michelle Obama wore a pair of your earrings, what was your first reaction? I was extremely proud. First Lady Michelle Obama in Kimberly McDonald black geode and ruby earrings, 2011 State dinner for China, Photo: Getty Images

It was the big state dinner for China and I received a text asking if she had my earrings on. Since I didn’t know it was even a possibility, I was obviously shocked...but very excited. What’s the biggest key to your success? I make what I love. My good friend Nicholas Varney once told me, “Buy materials that you find beautiful and make with them things you would love to wear.” I live by this mantra! What advice would you give to a young woman starting out in this industry? Do it only if you really love it. Don’t think of

Kimberly McDonald for Forevermark 33.46ctw diamond bangle set, ForevermarkDiamond.com

it as a money-making expedition. And have a person involved who will keep it real with you. How did you decide to open your first store – especially when so many retailers are struggling in this economy? I wanted a

small jewel box from which to present the “world of” KMD. As we expand into decorative pieces for the home, lifestyle, and scarves, it’s important to express the brand vision in one place.

124 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2012

What’s next for Kimberly McDonald? Oh, I think I’ll stay still for a bit and enjoy the new store and beautiful home collection...and continue to create bespoke jewelry pieces. Favorite accessory? My stack of geode and diamond macrame bracelets. I think the macrame bracelets are the epitome of casual luxury. They’re fine, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind, but they’re also cool and comfortable. Just my style! Favorite no-fail outfit? Anything by Raquel Allegra—she has

such an organic and laid-back style.

FOOD+WINE OSTERIA DRAGO

GENLUXSHOP

You’re Welcome: Celestino Drago does it again. Delicious fare in a warm and inviting interior.

Sunny Sides: Pop open Drago’s Raviolo with white truffles and (surprise!) a perfectly poached egg delights the senses.

Hard to Beet: Try Drago’s Beet Salad with creamy burrata cheese for a taste of heaven.

For over 20 years, Celestino Drago has tantalized our tastebuds. Now, as JEFF LIPSMAN finds, chef’s at it again.

B

ad luck for Santa Monica brought good news for West Hollywood this year. Drago’s celebrated run at Wilshire and 20th came to an end in January when Celestino Drago shuttered his eponymous eatery after 21 years.

Faced with a difficult remodel, he decided that moving was the better choice. His new restaurant, Osteria Drago, occupies the old Il Sole space on the Sunset Strip. I visited the restaurant on their first day of lunch service, and again the following week for dinner. Celestino was in the kitchen both times, watching over his new baby like a nervous father. “I have to get the word out,” he said, looking around at the empty lunch-service seats.

128 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2012

Celestino has no worries, but day one is perhaps not the best time for self-reflection. Like Drago before it, Osteria is where Southern Italian cuisine meets elegance and imagination, and the food is again wonderful. Celestino takes special pride in serving seasonal dishes. Featured on both the lunch and dinner menus is a Raviolo. This is a palm-size ravioli stuffed with ricotta and egg yolk, topped with summer truffles. Cut into it and the egg yolk oozes out like a poached egg on corned beef hash. Bring the fork to your mouth and your senses are flooded with the heady aroma of truffles. Nonna never made pasta like this. Also recommended, and quite a bit lighter, are the Beet Salad with arugula, burrata, and pistachio dressing and the Frutti di Mare, a marinated seafood plate with shrimp, squid and salad.

On my return dinner visit I ordered the Raviolo again. I couldn’t help it, but this time I split it with my dinner companion. We also enjoyed a tasty Pappardelle with roasted pheasant, and seasonal morel mushrooms and the Bran ino, European sea bass, one of Celestino’s best dishes. Celestino came to our table to say hello. Just then the door opened and in walked Jane Fonda with a lap dog. She and Mitzi sat at the table across from us. I turned to Celestino and shrugged my shoulders. I whispered to him, “What can you say if Jane Fonda sits down for dinner with her dog?” Without missing a beat, he smiled and replied, “Ms. Fonda, what would your dog like to eat?” For Osteria Drago, it seems the word is out. Osteria Drago, 8741 W Sunset Blvd, WeHo, 310-657-1182, osteriadrago.com

What is it about Parisian women who emanate such cool, unfussy flair? It’s an unspoken, unabashed grace that’s just oh, so French. Womenswear designer Vanessa Bruno is no exception. She is a talented beauty with impeccable taste, who Times UK editor Lisa Armstrong calls “the designer fashion editors actually wear.” Born in Paris in 1967, Vanessa began her career in fashion as a model at the age of 15. She developed a growing attraction for design, which would lead to her work under the mentorship of Dorothée Bis and Michel Klein. In 1992 she launched her brand, Vanessa Bruno, with a boutique in Paris and another in Tokyo. It was here that she established her much sought-after brand as one that embraces the simplicity of balanced softness, shape and mixed textiles. Luxurious wool and silk draped dresses in classic cuts, Vanessa’s latest F/W line is a collection of muted, dusky colors, and perfect for winter. “I like my clothes to look effortless, with the right cut in a beautiful, relaxed way,” she tells Drapers. “Customers don’t want to be caricatures—they want real clothes for real women.” While in LA, Vanessa enjoys visiting the Getty and fine Japanese dining at Nobu.
