At Genesis we believe in the importance of equipping students with a well-rounded set of skills which we believe will help students to succeed into the future. In recent McCrindle research (McCrindle, 2023), it was revealed that 87% of parents in Christian Schools believe that their child’s school plays an active role in leadership development. We certainly agree with this at Genesis and therefore place great value on the development of leadership skills. We believe in ‘everyday leadership’ which in simple terms means that for each of us our lives shape the people around us significantly every day. Sociologists tell us that even an introvert will influence 10,000 people over the course of his or her lifetime (Maxwell 2011). As a result, we endeavour to offer opportunities for students to develop and apply a positive leadership influence while at the College. There are many ways in which leadership development occurs at Genesis ranging from our more formal leadership year levels of Year 6, Year 9, and Year 12 to our leadership in various Co-Curricular activities, school-based programs, personal development programs and service-learning activities.

We recently reviewed our leadership model in Year 6 and 12 and expanded this to provide additional opportunities for student’s development, growth, and active involvement. I recently spoke with our Year 6 leaders about the importance of modelling the way - the significance of leading by example and walking the talk. We took time to align our school values with leadership behaviours and considered the impact that this would have on our school if these behaviours were to be consistently applied each and every day. One example the students thought about was our value of service. Students suggested an aligned behaviour with this value would be picking up and appropriately discarding of rubbish they found around the school grounds. We then spoke about the leadership influence that would develop from consistently applying this behaviour day in and day out.

I can’t help but think this lesson is so important for every person to embrace, for each of us can benefit from intentional behaviours being consistently applied within our lives. Can I encourage your family over a meal together in the coming weeks to discuss this concept with your children? What is one behaviour that could be selected by each member of your family that could be consistently applied over the period of the next 2 weeks? I wonder what impact this would have if reviewed two weeks later?

Education is an incredibly privileged vocation and as a school we are excited by the opportunities we have every day to encourage and nurture our young people in order that they may make a positive difference in our world.

Blessings

We are delighted to share the outstanding success of our Year 8 student team TACubed in the globally renowned Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior 2023 competition! Against fierce competition from more than 100 countries, our talented team emerged victorious.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior AI for Good Challenge is an international technology competition designed to inspire and empower students to utilise their creativity and teamwork to tackle real-world challenges through innovative solutions.

While participating in a global student challenge, students were introduced to technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and cybersecurity. The team designed an AI interactive mobile application that provides resources and techniques designed to relieve anxiety disorders and address mental health for children and teenagers.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior 2023 attracted the largest participation ever, with teams from diverse cultural backgrounds and technical expertise competing to make a difference. Our students' remarkable achievement amidst such intense competition underscores their determination, resilience, and passion for leveraging technology to drive positive change.

As a school, we couldn't be prouder of our Year 8 champions for their remarkable accomplishment. Their success serves as an inspiration for others, demonstrating that dedication, collaboration, and empathy can create powerful solutions that impact lives.

Earlier this month, our signature music event, the Mid Winter Gala, was a huge success featuring the College’s Secondary ensembles:

• Bella Voce

• Beginner, Junior and Intermediate Strings

• Junior Band and Concert Band

• Percussion Ensemble 2

• Brass Ensemble 2

History Week

We marked Queensland History week back in Term 2 with a week of History fun! Students had the chance to crack some history-themed codes before some movie lunches later in the week.

Business Week

Business Week is an institution at Genesis and students and staff alike look forward to purchasing from the businesses run by our Year 10 students. Sausage sizzle and pizza lunches were among a wide variety of treats offered for sale during the week. Year 10 students worked in groups to develop a business plan and pitch it to senior management before operating at Break 2. All profits raised from their ventures will be passed on to New Life Orphanage in Myanmar.

Civics and Citizenship

The last week of Term 2 saw Year 7,8 and 9 students spend a day learning about the key features of Australian government and their rights and responsibilities as citizens. A lot of fun was had developing political parties before running a campaign and voting in an election!

9 History

Y9 students hopped on a boat to visit St Helena Island in Moreton Bay. The island was initially home to a quarantine station before being transformed into the largest prison in Queensland for male prisoners from 1867. Students explored the remains of structures to learn more about the place of St Helena within Brisbane's history and the experienced of those who lived and worked on the island.

Dr Daniel Gullotta

Some of our Year 9 History classes had a visit from Dr Daniel Gullotta (a friend of Mrs Haywood's) who currently teaches religion and history as the Archer Fellow in Residence at Ashland University. Daniel spoke on The Gospel of Slavery and the Gospel of Freedom - how enslavers and slaves both used Christianity as a means to fight for and against slavery in Christian history. It was a great way to wrap up our study of the movement of people around the world in the 19th century. We're really thankful to Daniel for giving up a day of his holiday time to speak to us!

Legal Studies

Both our Yr11 and Yr12 Legal Studies classes made a visit into the Brisbane Supreme Court for a day of observing cases and seeing our legal system in action. The Yr12 class were privileged to meet The Honourable Chief Justice Helen Bowskill who kindly took the time to answer questions and take students through some of the key moments in a trial.

Ancient History

The Yr12 class visited the RD Milns Antiquities Museum at the University of Queensland for a hands-on workshop on Roman numismatics (the study of coins). Students got to handle real Roman coins and learned about the different meanings and messages they had.

What's coming up?

Year 7 and 8 will both have an all-day incursion with Living History where they will be able to immerse themselves in medieval and ancient Roman life!

Year 9 Business students are busy working on their products to present at our annual Trade Show!

Recently, our Year 2 students went on a trip to the Pine Rivers Heritage Museum. They got to see and experience life in the 1890s as they explored old fashioned play, did the washing and sat in a classroom complete with rows of wooden desks, slate boards and some very clear rules around manners!

What’s been happening inside your classroom?

In Year 3 in Science, we have been learning about Mrs Gren’s characteristics of living things. In Health with our teachers and Mrs Mason and Mrs Nadler we are learning strategies to control our emotions using the Zones of Regulation. We are learning about the difference between commemorations and celebrations in HASS. In Maths we are multiplying and dividing and becoming quicker at completing the multiplication grid in our daily drills and in English we are learning to write information reports about Australian animals.

What’s been happening outside your classroom?

We have lots of children learning in the FLA area working in small groups and also lunch time activities that we can attend during break. There is also a lot of construction happening in the Primary area. We have a Primary school that is growing!

What has been your 2023 highlight, so far?

This term we went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where we learned more about classifying animals into groups like amphibians, reptiles, marsupials and birds. We really enjoyed going into the enclosure where we could get pat and feed kangaroos.

What can we celebrate and share with parents?

On 9 August we videoed our songs for Grandparents day. 3R and 3W performed Lightning, while 3B and 3G performed I trust in you Lord. On this same day Mrs J the teacher from 3R brought her baby Ezra in to show the class. He was adorable and had tine little fingers and short dark hair.

Year 8 students ended their first semester with a three day camp at Adventure Alternatives at Kenilworth, from 21 to 23 June. Students scaled to new heights, tested their talents, explored beautiful bushland and deepened interpersonal connections. A highlight was the hike to the serene Booloumba Creek in Conondale National Park for an overnight sleepout in a tent, cooking dinner over a fire under the stars. Our students showed tremendous resolve and resilience as they tackled their camp activities.

A vote of thanks goes to the staff and parents who attended camp and helped provide the students with an enjoyable a trusting atmosphere, and a huge congratulations to all the Yr.8 students who stepped out of their comfort zone during the camp and gave new experiences a go.

Crawling through tunnels, navigating a patient through a mudpit on a stretcher, tackling a paintball battlefield in a team….these are just some of the challenges our Year 11 students conquered at their camp at Emu Gully Adventure Education at Helidon Spa last week. Through storytelling and simulated war exercises, the students displayed tremendous grit, resilience, team work and leadership skills. Other highlights included driving twister buggies, a night hike, and kicking up their heels at a bush dance with Smashing Bumpkins. These shared experiences have generated greater unity within the cohort, bringing students together. The future is looking bright for the Senior Class of 2024!

Future Horizons Breakfast

Recently Year 11 and 12 students attended the inaugural Future Horizons Breakfast – hosted by Future Pathways It was a wonderful opportunity to hear inspirational stories from a panel of Genesis Alumni. The breakfast was hosted by the engaging Rebecca Parry from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Travis Grainger, Youth Pastor at Bridgeman Baptist Community Church gave a thoughtful and inspiring message about navigating change. The panel included a wide variety of alumni with graduates from 2013 through to 2019.

Jenny Nguyen, is a multifaceted professional who pursued a passion for history and the humanities during her academic journey. Her studies equipped her well for working in consulting and sales in the tech industry. Jenny shared about the importance of networking and maintaining work-life balance. Ben Lowbridge, Genesis graduand of 2013, is a Senior Software Engineer at Flight Centre Travel Group. Originally interested in web design, he discovered his talent for making things work seamlessly. With experience in corporate, not for profit and digital agencies, Ben says his career highlights include creating a tool used in the commonwealth games and working on national projects. Ben shared about his change in career focus during university and the lessons he learned about accepting change and valuing all learning.

Benjamin Redsell is an accomplished Aviation Ground Crewman who has served in the Australian Army for two years. In 2021, Benjamin commenced his recruitment and underwent three months of training before being stationed at various locations across Australia. After a severe accident Ben has been medically discharged from the Army and he shared a meaningful message about resilience after setbacks, and the importance of being open to new experiences and exploring different options.

2015 alumnus Jessica Traves is currently pursuing her final semester of the Doctor of Medicine at the University of Queensland and has just accepted an intern position at Toowoomba Hospital for next year. It was fascinating to hear about her love of Peadiatrics, a career in Medicine and the unique challenges it offers.

Gabrielle Grieg graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Drama and Studies of Religion Following a passion for learning and academia, Gabrielle is now in the final year of her Doctorate of Drama and finishing her thesis. Gabrielle shared about the importance of her faith in guiding her journey.

The attending students asked some excellent and thought-provoking questions around school leadership, mindset when finishing Year 12 and how to handle career or study redirection. The planning for next years Future Horizons Alumni Event is already underway.

We are thrilled to share the fantastic news of a young and innovative student's remarkable achievement at the Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards. The event, which aims to recognise and honour groundbreaking ideas that contribute to the growth and development of the community, showcased the immense talent and ingenuity of individuals across the region. The Awards serve as a platform to encourage collaboration, showcase novel concepts, and inspire others to take on the mantle of innovation. All Year 9 LEEP LINC students were involved in the program that supported the students with the development of their ideas through a series of workshops presented by Nicole Dyson the CEO of Future Anything.

Amidst a competitive pool of participants consisting of mostly senior students from the region, Kimberly Chambers-Tatters emerged victorious. The award not only highlights the individual's innovation but also emphasises the importance of fostering creativity and forward-thinking among our youth.

Kimberly's winning project, Telstra Shelter Assist (TSA), stood out for its innovative approach to addressing the issue of homelessness in the Moreton Bay region. The project's unique ideas around providing digital access to supporting services like finding shelter for people in need around the Moreton Bay area through the use of digital devices (e.g. IPADs) at Telstra payphones that contain free WIFI captured the attention of the judges, demonstrating a keen understanding of current challenges and the potential for transformative solutions.

Congratulations, Kimberly, Tia, Alana, Amelia and Amy, your achievements inspires us all and reminds us of the incredible power of innovation to shape a better tomorrow. We look forward to witnessing their continued growth and contributions to making the world a better place.

2023 Year 10 Work Experience

Work experience was once again a very valuable experience for our year 10 students. With most work experience taking place in the student free week at the start of term 3, students undertook placements in everything from allied health to teaching, farming, veterinary science and many different trades.

“They have helped me to understand a lot more about different careers in the legal industry and I have been encouraged to pursue careers that are not in criminology, but rather other areas (such as employment law)” Eliza Daniel, Yr 10 (Pine Rivers District Court / Corney & Lind Lawyers).

“My favourite part was going around the different careers on the base and experiencing the different simulators. The best thing was getting to watch a few jets taxi and take off, while standing a few hundred metres away from the tarmac.” - Jessica Black, Yr 10 (RAAFThe Defence Work Experience Program, Air Force Aviation Program for Women)

Through their placements, students develop a valuable understanding of their preferences which has helped them refine their subject choices for years 11 and 12, develop essential life skills and connect to their future goals.

Manga Illustrator Visit

During the final week of Term 2 a visit from Author and Manga Illustrator, David Lovegrove was organised through the library. David held a workshop for each of the year 6 classes during which he shared his skills and experience relating to the Japanese art of Manga. These workshops were hands on and incorporated links to Japanese language and culture. The highlight of the workshop was David’s specialty skill in ambidextrous drawing – his ability to draw and spontaneously generate symmetrical pictures using both hands simultaneously. Each student was encouraged to let go of their technical expectations and have a go at putting their own potential ambidextrous skills to the test. Overall, the workshop was enjoyable, insightful, and most importantly, inspirational for budding artists and illustrators.

This month, a team of 25 students and staff headed to a residence in Kallangur for a special MAD Backyard Blitz. Across the afternoon, student volunteers dug up garden beds, trimmed branches, planted trees, cleaned out a garage space and even started a vegetable garden for a very deserving couple.

It was wonderful to see the students serve members of our community in such a tangible way. Thanks to our Pastoral Care team for coordinating this activity and of course to each of the students and staff who gave of their time to take part.

Tuesday the 25th of July and Tuesday the 15th of August were when the Year 9 Boys and Girls were visited by and trained with Tim Alexander from Krav Maga Training Academy as well as his amazing assistants.

Besides engaging in various practical safety skills and self-defence, Tim engaged in deep and worthwhile discussions with the students about what it means to be a man or woman in respecting one another in today’s society, being prepared for any situation, and Conflict Resolution.”

CREDENTIALLING OPPORTUNITIES

Skills Portfolio

Employers are seeking employees who are educated, possess real world skills and experience.

With a focus on supporting students to be work ready and future-focussed, the College has developed an online Skills Portfolio. The Skills Portfolio is an online hub that assists students to identify, track, monitor and upload evidence of the skills they have acquired during the schooling years. Skills are categorised into four different areas including:

• Work ready

• Future ready

• ‘The extra mile’

• Areas of excellence

The Skills Portfolio can be accessed through the Future Pathways intranet or through Student Café. Students in Years 10 and 11 now have access.

The benefit of the Skills Portfolio is that is allows students to record and store evidence of skills, but also visually identifies areas which perhaps require further attention.

Looking for a job?

Use the Skills Portfolio to stand out from the crowd by providing a prospective employer a summary copy of your portfolio.

Short Courses and Micro-credentialling Opportunities

Additionally, if students are looking to upskill in an area or gain additional qualifications/credentials, we have developed a partnership with Australian Online Courses. These courses are self-managed and selffunded and additional to a student’s workload. Students in Year 10 and 11 are encouraged to take a look as there are courses which focus on a diverse range of skills. The College has secured a 15% discount on all course fees. Please use the code genesis23 to obtain this discount.

Students will be assisted in navigating and accessing the Skills Portfolio during Personal Development lessons.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Nichola Welsh for further information at n.welsh@genesis.qld.edu.au or the Future Pathways department at futurepathways@genesis.qld.edu.au

SKILLS PORTFOLIO & SHORT COURSES +

At Genesis, we are committed to constantly evolving and improving the way we deliver communication and information to our families.

Over the coming weeks, we will be introducing some exciting new changes to the way you access and action information related to the College and your child/ren.

The first phase in this journey is the introduction of Single Sign On (SSO). SSO will make your login experience with Parent Lounge, the new APP and My School Connect completely seamless – no more remembering multiple passwords.

SSO for the currently App and Parent Lounge launched Thursday, 17 Aug. Keep an eye on your inbox for an email with a link to set up your account. This will replace the need for you to use and remember your parent code and password and will reduce the number of times you have to login.

You will be able to login to Parent Lounge using one of the following four identity providers: Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook, provided that the email address with the provider matches the one we have on record for you.

If you currently have one email address registered with us, then you will have one login account that you will need to share with your spouse/partner if applicable. If you have provided an email address within the Email 1 (Mother) and Email 2 (Father) fields, then both email addresses will receive their own login account. To check or update the email address/es on file for your family, please log in to Parent Lounge and update your email as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about SSO or need help updating your email address, please contact the Parent Lounge Helpdesk.

Did you – or do you know – a student who finished Year 12 in 2013 or 2003? If so, please share our upcoming Alumni Reunions!

Family Friday Pancake Breakfast:

The Family Friday Pancake Breakfast is has fast become a much-loved tradition at Genesis. More than 300 pancakes were served to early risers who braved a chilly morning in favour of a delicious breakfast and community connection.

Following the breakfast, families joined together for a short time of worship in Oasis Church.

Thanks goes to our P&F Association for hosting the breakfast, the many volunteers who came and served and our Pastoral Care team for putting together a wonderful worship service. Family Friday will be back again next term.

Youth Sports Stars Breakfast:

The energy was electric at our inaugural Youth Sports Stars Breakfast earlier this month!

Hosted by Genesis, this event brought together schools from across Moreton Bay for a morning of camaraderie and inspiration as students heard the incredible stories of some of Queensland’s brightest sporting stars.

Genesis students, including participants in our STEEP program attended the event which was held at Norths Leagues Club.

Paralympian Blake Cochrane (OAM) set the stage for an unforgettable morning as our MC. Students then heard from world champion Iron Woman Courtney Hancock, Queensland Reds Ryan Smith, Queensland Firebirds Lara Dunkley, and Former Australian Boomer Matthew Hodgson.

A highlight of the morning was the coveted game of captain ball where some lucky students had the chance to join a team with one of the sporting stars and battle it out for bragging rights (and some chocolate)!

The morning concluded with a Question-and-Answer session and a special opportunity for students to meet each of the stars, take some photos and get some autographs.

The event would not have been possible without our sponsors including Best Wilson Buckley Family Law, Norths Leagues Club Kallangur, Moreton Bay Regional Council (inc. Mayor Peter Flannery, Cr Yvonne Barlow, Cr Mick Gillam, and Cr Cath Tonks) and Peter Dutton. Thanks also to Genesis Sports and Aquatics and Vorgee for their donation of lucky door prizes.

The event was a wonderful display of community and a great celebration of sport in our region. We are already looking forward to next year!

The Great Genesis Picnic:

What an incredible day we had at The Great Genesis Picnic! It was GREAT to see so many Genesis families come together as a community for an afternoon of great food, great music, and great community connection.

Hosted by the Genesis P&F Association, the event featured performances by Emerge Youth Band, Ethan Beer, and Dan Warlow. There was also lots of fun to be had on the inflatables and in the animal farm.

The highlight of the event was The Great Race, which saw students, parents and teachers come together for some friendly competition.

The heats saw Team Alex claim victory – twice, but they were pipped at the post in a contentious finale event. The teachers joined in the fun for the final and battled it out against the students. After a fierce contest it was Team Jake who took home the trophy… and some goodies from our friends at GYG Warner.

Big thanks to our Hospitality students who prepared more than 500 delicious meals on the day and of course to the Genesis P&F Association all their efforts in planning the picnic.
