In the first week of the term, our Year 6 cohort embarked on the annual tour to Canberra. Departing early Monday morning, the group arrived in Canberra by midday and began their activities. The students had an action-packed schedule starting with a visit to the National Capital Education Centre, where they learned why Canberra was chosen as the nation's capital and its architectural significance. They then toured the Royal Australian Mint's Visitor Centre, learning about coin production and the history of Australian currency.  At Government House, students were welcomed by the new Governor-General’s, aide-de-camp, who explained the GovernorGeneral's roles. The day concluded with a bus tour of Canberra’s embassies and high commissions.  The second day included visits to the Australian Institute of Sport, where students toured training facilities and tested their skills in the interactive Sportex Hall. They walked Anzac Parade, learning about significant war monuments, and toured the Australian War Memorial.

The National Arboretum provided a fun orienteering challenge, and students enjoyed some down time at Pod Playground. At the National Museum of Australia, they participated in the "Deadly Defining Moments" program, exploring significant events in Australian history through the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. A visit to Parliament House included a guided tour and a mock parliamentary session.

A highlight of the trip was the snow day at Selwyn Snow Resort, where students received ski lessons and enjoyed playing in the snow.

We are grateful to the College leadership, staff and parent volunteers for their efforts and support. Without them, the Tour would not be possible. We would also like to acknowledge the assistance of the Australian Government. The Australian Government supports these educational excursions through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program, providing $90 per student to assist with costs. This funding is greatly appreciated, as it helps ensure that all young Australians can experience their national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

Our annual Year 11 camp at Emu Gully tests the mettle of our students by giving them a hands-on taste of the difficulties Australians involved in historical events and theatres of conflict including WWI, WWII and Vietnam experienced.

Through immersive activities replicating aspects of the Western Front, Siege of Tobruk, Bridge over the River Kwai, Tunnel Rats of Vietnam, Hellfire Pass, the Kokoda Track and a night walk, students demonstrated the character values of courage, mateship, sacrifice and perseverance.

Our Year 11s rose to the challenge, displaying grit and leadership skills which will help them through their senior schooling.

Students relished a bushdance with The Smashing Bumpkins, driving bush buggies, tackling a paintball battle, watching the State of Origin and connecting over card games.

Primary Robotics

Some of our Genesis Robotics Club primary students competed in the RoboRAVE competition recently. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the process of designing new robotic inventions, then building and coding their ideas to compete in Entrepreneur categories of the competition. Both teams did an excellent job of promoting their product on competition day. Special congratulations to Ava, Amira and Heike whose team won first place in their division.

Year 10 Dance excursion to The Queensland Ballet!

As part of their Ballet unit of study, our Year 10 Dance class went on an excursion to the newly refurbished Thomas Dixon Centre in West End to watch the company’s performance of Bespoke. Compelling, challenging, and thoughtprovoking, Bespoke featured a triple bill by leading Australian choreographers. Our students were left inspired and motivated within their Dance studies Macbeth performance for our Drama students!

Our Years 9-12 Drama students had the privilege of having Shake & Stir Theatre Company visit Genesis to perform MacBeth. Our students were transported into the world of Shakespeare and immersed in the heartwrenching story of Macbeth. The production tells the story of how against a backdrop of political unrest, during an unusually bad bout of weather, appearances can be deceiving, and no one is to be trusted. Thank you Shake & Stir Theatre Company for challenging and inspiring our students!

P&F Bush Dance:

On August 3, a sea of flannel ascended on the Genesis Ball Courts for this years P&F Bush Dance. The event was a ‘smashing’ success, thanks in no small part to the incredible performance by The Smashing Bumpkins. The band had everyone one their feet and dancing the night away.

The dance floor was packed with students, parents and teachers, all joining together for line dance classics like the Heel and Toe and the Nutbush. Each song with its own ‘Smashing Bumpkins’ flare.

In addition to the music and dancing, the P&F served tasty BBQ along with snacks and treats, ensuring no one went hungry.

It was wonderful to see the Genesis community come together for a night of fun.

A huge thank you to the Genesis P&F Association and all the volunteers who helped make the evening such a success.

On July 30, we proudly hosted the second Youth Sports Stars Breakfast, an event dedicated to celebrating and inspiring young athletes within our community.   Schools from across the North Brisbane region attended and enjoyed a delicious breakfast provided by Norths Leagues Club.

The event featured a stellar lineup of speakers including Scott Neville (Brisbane Roar), Bryson Klein (Australian Ninja Warrior), Jade Ellenger (Brisbane Lions) and Blake Cochrane (Paralympic Swimmer), who also served as our MC.

Each speaker shared their unique journeys to becoming professional athletes. Their stories were filled with insights on resilience, the true meaning of success, persistence and overcoming fears.

Following the presentations, students had the opportunity to ask each of the athletes some questions in the panel discussion and get photos and autographs in the meet and greet.

A special thank you to our generous event sponsors whose support made this event possible:

• Moreton Bay Regional Council

• Peter Dutton

• Ray White Warner

• Norths Leagues and Services Club

• Genesis Sport and Aquatics

And of course, thanks to the students and staff of Genesis who attended and contributed to making this event such a memorable one!

Year 12 ATAR and QTAC Presentation

Recently, Mr Wayne van den Bos, the Director of the Senior Phase, presented an enlightening session on the ATAR and QTAC processes to our Year 12 students. This presentation aimed to demystify the university application procedures and provide students with a clear pathway towards their tertiary education goals and other post-school pathways.

The presentation covered the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) application process, guiding students through each step, from registering for a QTAC account to course selection, preferencing and key dates. Mr. van den Bos emphasised the importance of researching potential universities and courses thoroughly, advising students to consider factors such as entry requirements, course content, and future career opportunities. He also discussed options for obtaining early offers and how to submit EAS (Educational Access Scheme) applications.

Mr. van den Bos explained how to accept offers, including conditional acceptance and deferring. He also reminded all students who are eligible for an ATAR that they need to register on the QTAC ATAR Portal to receive their ATAR.

Students left the session with a deeper understanding of the ATAR and QTAC systems, equipped with practical advice on navigating the transition to university and making informed decisions about their future.

ADF Careers Presentation – Year 11

In early Term 3, our Year 11 students had the opportunity to attend the highly popular Australian Defence Force Careers Presentation, hosted by Corporal Nakita Kemp (RAAF- Royal Australian Air Force) and Leading Seaman Jacob Owen (Royal Australian Navy). What is always an engaging session provided an in-depth look into the various career options and benefits within the ADF, and the numerous opportunities to pursue further studies while serving. Students learned about the different pathways available to them after completing Year 12, gaining valuable insights into how the ADF can support their career aspirations and educational goals. For further information regarding ADF careers and the ADF work experience program, pop in to see the Future Pathways team or visit www.adfcareers.gov.au

Year 10 Work Experience Program

Around 100 students attended workplaces across various industries, including aviation, interior design, law, trades, teaching, allied health, childcare, and many more. Surveyed students reported that the program significantly improved their confidence and people skills, with 65% expressing interest in a second placement in Year 11 or 12 to gain further experience.

The program offers students opportunities to pursue work experience during their school holidays throughout Years 10, 11, and 12, with encouragement for more than one placement if needed. The Genesis Work Experience Program serves as a bridge to the real world, equipping students with essential life and employability skills, facilitating a smoother transition from educational settings to professional environments.
