Are Reverse Mortgages Bad? T he reverse mortgage industry has been weathering a barrage of press that has been stressing only the negative side of a reverse mor tgage. The stigma associated with the subprime lending is now being unfairly attached to the reverse mortgage industry, owing perhaps to the slim fact that vulnerable borrowers are often interested in both products. There have been the isolated instances of dishonest individuals advising seniors to put reverse mor tgage profits into annuities or desperate family members and caregivers making unauthorized use of the funds. All of these stories revolve around a dishonest individual, not the reverse mortgage product itself. The reality is that last year HUD reported only two cases of fraud in the 115,000 in reverse mor tgages closed. The majority of fraud reported to HUD has been perpetrated by family members or financial planners and caretakers, not the mortgage personnel. Today’s seniors can be fully educated by loan officers on the positives and the negatives of a reverse mortgage as it may relate to them. The power of a reverse mor tgage to help homeowners enhance their living situation is remarkable. It helps convert a grueling lifestyle to a fulfilled lifestyle. Couples or individuals who

have closed on a reverse mor tgage tell of the want or need to change their living circumstances by supplementing cash flow, paying off existing mor tgages or other debts, covering health care costs, or adding a source of funds for emergency expenses or discretionary spending. It is the responsibility of the reverse mortgage industry and its loan originators to not only educate prospective borrowers about how a reverse mortgage can help, but also address the 800-pound gorilla in the room (A.K.A. false and misleading information), giving them the confidence they need to fully consider a reverse mortgage. We have to get the word out on the hundreds of thousands of seniors who are living a more comfortable life as a result of obtaining one. We at The Mortgage Outlet know that our clients have a tremendous rate of satisfaction with both their lenders and their loans. To get the true facts about reverse mor tgages, contact us at 631-589-3600 or david.bailey@themortgageoutlet.org.

Hearing Loss... You should hear what you’re missing!

H

earing loss is not just an ailment of old age. It can strike at any age, at any time, even during childhood. Many people are aware that their hearing has deteriorated but are reluctant to seek help. Many do not want to acknowledge the problem, embarrassed by what they see as a weakness, or feel they can “get by” without the use of a hearing aid. And, unfortunately, too many wait years before getting treatment. Time and time again, research demonstrates the negative impact that untreated hearing loss has on communication; so much so that there can be serious implications affecting professional and personal lives, and at times, lead to isolation and withdrawal. The signs of hearing loss can be subtle and emerge slowly, or they can be significant and come on suddenly. Either way, there are common indications. You should suspect hearing loss if you experience any of the signs below.

Socially: • require frequent repetition • have difficulty following conversations involving more than 2 people • think that other people sound muffled or like they're mumbling • have difficulty hearing in noisy situations, like conferences, restaurants, or malls • have trouble hearing children and women • have your TV or radio turned up to a high volume • answer or respond inappropriately in conversations • have ringing in your ears • read lips or more intently watch people's faces when they speak with you

Emotionally: • feel stressed out from straining to hear what others are saying • feel annoyed at other people because you can't hear or understand them • feel embarrassed to meet new people or from misunderstanding what others are saying • feel nervous about trying to hear and understand • withdraw from social situations that you once enjoyed because of difficulty hearing

Medically: • have a family history of hearing loss • take medications that can harm the hearing system (ototoxic drugs) • have diabetes, heart, circulation or thyroid problems • have been exposed to very loud sounds or single exposure to explosive noise

If you recognize any of the symptoms listed above, you should have a baseline hearing evaluation. Please contact the professionals at Island Better Hearing at (631) 271-1018 or visit www.islandbetterhearing.com

Dental Implants are Here to Stay Using dental implants to replace missing teeth and to support dentures is a very important part of dentistry today. But it took some time for it to be this way. When I was in my Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program in the late 1980s, dental implants were the “new thing.” Very few people knew about dental implants and it was difficult for patients to find information about them. Through the early 1990s dental implants were gradually becoming more accepted. It was still difficult convincing general dentists to give their patients the option of using dental implants to replace missing teeth. They didn’t want to try something “experimental” on their patients. Now, as we move into the second decade of the 21st century, the use of dental implants is widely accepted. It is hard to find someone who hasn’t heard of dental implants. Information is widely available, especially through the internet. Dental implants have become an integral part of dentistry. Now, almost every patient who needs to have teeth replaced should be given the option of having dental implants. Dental implants have passed the test of time. Once

they are placed in the jaw, they can last a lifetime. Very rarely does a dental implant need to be replaced. How many times have you had crowns or bridges remade because the supporting teeth developed problems? And full dentures need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years because they become loose and don’t stay in well. It’s not uncommon for a dentist to say to me, “I saw Mrs. Smith in my office recently and the implants you placed 10 years ago are still holding up fine!” So, if you are missing teeth, whether it’s one tooth, several teeth or all your teeth, you should consider using dental implants to replace them. They provide a timetested, long-lasting way of supporting crowns and dentures. For further information call Dr. David Miller at 631-499-7266 for your complimentary consultation to find out how you can benefit from dental implants.

Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry By Dr. Terry S. Shapiro - Serving Long Island for over 20 years

T

Two prospective patients came into the office recently with the same complaint. Both had lost all of their teeth and were wearing worn-out and ill-fitting dentures. Their dentures were loose; they had trouble eating foods they would have liked; their faces had that sunken-in look and they were in pain. Their previous dentists recommended implants to stabilize the dentures. The problem was that as they were both retired and on fixed incomes they could not afford implants. What to do? Yes, implants are a wonderful service and have revolutionized what we can do to improve lives. I love implants! But due to the laboratory and materials costs involved, they are expensive. My approach is different from

other dentists. I make new, customfitted dentures for my patients and explain to them that if the new dentures don't fit and function well, we can then add implants. My experience is that the denture patient does very well with the new dentures and often decides not to add the implants. Implants are always an option but they don’t have to be the first option. I believe that patients like these can be well served with wellfitting dentures.

Arthritis Arthritis is one of those diseases everyone’s heard of and think they know all about. Chances are, unless you have personal experience, either directly or through a family member, your ‘knowledge’ is probably mostly misconceptions, misinformation, and old wives tales.

by Deborah Norville

12 | Spring ‘10 | generations

My connection to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a very personal one. My mom suffered from RA. She was diagnosed when I was ten and the larger part of my childhood was colored by the stark reality that my mother had a chronic, debilitating disease. In just a few short years, she went from being the energetic, outgoing mother of four helping run the family business and the local Girl Scout cookie sale, to being bedridden because of joint damage. My mom was diagnosed with RA in the 1970s when very little was understood about rheumatoid arthritis. We knew it wasn’t the ‘other’ kind of arthritis, osteoarthritis, but beyond that it was pretty much an information void. These were the days before the internet so there was nowhere to turn for mom or our family to do our own research, to learn more about the disease, or what kinds of questions we should have asked her doctors. I have wondered if things might have been different if we had been better informed and were better advocates for my mom. That’s why I was happy to be a part of New Way RATM, a new online talk show focused on topics relevant to anyone dealing with rheumatoid arthritis. The show takes a whole life approach to RA and features interviews with experts on topics relevant to someone living with a chronic condition - nutrition, fitness, relationships and work/career issues. I only wish something like this existed when my mom was sick. There were few effective treatments when my mother was diagnosed, but I do wish that she could have known the encouraging news about exercise and how to move when you have a flare-up. If she’d heard straight talk about how to negotiate relationships when RA is part of the equation or the connection between nutrition and inflammation — I can only imagine how encouraging that might have been. People forget that the physical symptoms are only one aspect of RA. With chronic diseases, there is much more to manage than just aches and pains. It’s during the month of May that we celebrate Mother’s Day, always a bittersweet Sunday for me me to celebrate since my mother is no longer with me. May is also National Arthritis Month. The goal is to increase awareness of arthritis and to help the general public better gain a better understanding which can benefit both those with arthritis and people who are not afflicted with the disease. Most likely there is a person out there who’s recently learned they have RA and is wondering, ‘What now?’ There is a family member filled with misgivings about the future. New Way RA acknowledges the incredible difficulties that this condition presents, the experts in the show offer viewers new ways and new perspectives on how to live with this disease, rather than allowing the disease to limit you. I hope that viewers will not only have an expectant attitude, but they will also be proactive in asking the right questions – of their doctors, of friends and family, even of themselves. If you or someone you know is dealing with RA, I encourage you to visit www.NewWayRA.com to watch the full show, order a DVD and get some ideas for better ways to live with RA.

What is rheumatoid arthritis? Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is a systemic inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of motion in the joints. It is an autoimmune disease — one of many in which, for unknown reasons, a person's immune system attacks his or her own body tissues. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system attacks the synovium, which is the tissue that lines the joints. This causes an inflammation that can eventually lead to the destruction of the synovium and the joint.

heumatoid arthritis occurs in all types of people. But there are several characteristics that many patients share:

R

§ The disease often begins when people are between the ages of 30 and 50.

§ Rheumatoid arthritis is about three times more common in women than in men.

§ People who have close relatives with rheumatoid arthritis may be at increased risk of developing the disease.

What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis? The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis vary from person to person and can mimic those of other inflammatory joint conditions, sometimes making the diagnosis difficult. Common RA symptoms include: § Tender, warm, swollen, and stiff joints, often first noticed in the hands and feet and usually symmetrical; for example, both wrists are affected at the same time.

§ Stiffness and pain that are usually worse after waking in the morning and last at least an hour before improving with use and motion.

§ Tiredness, low-grade fever, weight loss, and a general feeling of malaise that may develop even before the onset of joint symptoms.

§ Systemic effects on other parts of the body, such as the tear and salivary glands, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

§ Soft lumps called rheumatoid nodules that range in size from a pea to a walnut, which occur in 20 to 30 percent of people with RA.

How is rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed? A primary care physician may be able to diagnose RA

by eliminating other conditions. But a specialist called a rheumatologist is better trained to detect the signs and symptoms of RA and would be more knowledgeable about the latest treatments.

What’s the cause of rheumatoid arthritis? Researchers have yet to uncover the cause or causes of rheumatoid arthritis. However, it’s thought that a combination of factors triggers RA, including abnormal activity of the immune system acting against the body — called an autoimmune response — genetic susceptibility, and some environmental or biologic triggers, such as viral infections or hormonal changes.

What’s the treatment for rheumatoid arthritis? RA patients use a combination of treatments to relieve pain, improve mobility, and slow down or perhaps even stop damage to the joints. A treatment plan may include: § Lifestyle modifications: exercise, stress reduction, healthful eating

§ Medications including non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic therapies § Physical therapy

§ Surgery to repair damaged joints

§ Alternative and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage, or biofeedback for pain control

Is there a cure for rheumatoid arthritis? There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis — but with the right treatment, the disease most often can be wellmanaged. The key to living comfortably with RA is adhering to your treatment plan and communicating with your doctor about symptoms and treatment side effects. www.generationsmagazine.com | 13

Five Tips for Finding Mr./Ms. Right Just three months shy of the big Six-O, I found myself suddenly single. My seemingly perfect marriage of 25 years was over. What’s a girl to do? Twelve days later, ignoring my girlfriends who thought I was moving too fast, I joined an online dating service. “Life’s too short,” I told them. “Why wait?” I was right. As I made my way through thousands of profiles and met hundreds – yes, hundreds – of men, I learned how to make the most of online dating, achieve my goals, and come out on top. I developed skills and created strategies that really worked. I met my Mr. Right. It took me three years

Here’s my theory: Everyone has a number. It’s like playing the slot machines. Put enough money in, and you’ll eventually win. That’s how it is with online dating. Date enough and you’ll eventually meet the winner.

to meet him, but – no, make that and - I had the best time! You can, too – if you follow these five tips.

Tip Number 1: Be realistic. It’s not going to happen overnight. You have to kiss a lot of amphibians before you meet your prince (or princess). You’re going to meet more people you don’t like than people you do like. You’re going to be rejected. There will be times that you want to give up. But if you’re realistic, you won’t be disappointed, and you’ll keep going until you meet your Mr. (Ms.) Right. 14 | Spring ‘10 | generations

Tip Number 2: Be positive. You don’t have to try to convince yourself that every person you meet will be someone you want to see a second time, but you can still make sure that you come away from a first encounter with at least one positive thing to say about it, even if it’s that the coffee was good. Tip Number 3: Treat online dating like a second job. If you go about it half-heartedly, it won’t work. You have to give it your all. If you go about it passively, it won’t work. You cannot wait for others to contact you. You have to make the initial move. Now, I know this is often hard for women, especially older women, who think that men are supposed to make the first move. Wrong! If you don’t take it seriously, it won’t work. You can’t say, “Well, these aren’t great photos of me, but who cares?” The photos have to be the best photos you can possibly take. And notice, I said, “Photos.” Not “Photo.” You have to post more than one photo (three is a perfect number) AND they have to be recent AND at least one of them has to be a full-body photo. No matter what your body type is. And you have to write a dynamite profile, which takes time too.

Tip Number 4: Have fun with it. Remember, you can be serious about something, but still have fun with it.

Tip Number 5: Never give up. Here’s my theory: Everyone has a number. It’s like playing the slot

machines. Put enough money in, and you’ll eventually win. That’s how it is with online dating. Date enough and you’ll eventually meet the winner. Of course, you don’t know what your number is; so, you don’t know how many of those amphibians you’re going to have to kiss. Yes, it took me three years – and over 100 men - to meet my Mr. Right. But it only took him four months – and 12 women - to meet me. I believed that the more men I met, the sooner I’d get to Mr. Right. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that I went out with ‘just anyone.’ I only went out with men who seemed interesting to me, based on their profiles, and physically appealing, based on their photographs. And isn’t that the beauty of online dating? There are so many people to choose from. You just have to be the one to do the choosing (See Tip Number 4). Follow these five tips, and you can live happily ever after, too. You can make it happen. Speaking Out about Colonic Hydrotherapy With all the toxins we ingest, from processed foods to medication overload, it is important to educate ourselves on prevention and alternative therapy. Detoxifying our bodies through colonic irrigation has significant health benefits and can offer life changing results. The benefits of this procedure supersede those of laxative teas and or pills. Many people have their own vision on how they imagine this process taking place. Others have tried the procedure and maybe felt awkward or uncomfortable. Hearing Health A person’s quality of life can improve remarkably with better hearing skills. Sound is one of the major channels by which we come into contact with the world around us. Hearing well allows us to communicate with our family and friends and keeps us in contact with the sounds of life that surround us 24 hours a day. Studies have shown that persons with a managed hearing loss have half the number of visits to doctors and enjoy better social, emotional, and physical well being. These are good reasons to have your hearing loss managed.

Symptoms of Hearing Loss Some people may have a hearing problem without realizing it. If hearing loss is ignored or untreated, it can deteriorate. But hearing loss that is identified early can be helped through treatment. If you answer "yes" to three or more of these questions, you could have a hearing problem and may need to have your hearing checked by a doctor. Do I have a problem hearing on the telephone? K yes K no Do I have trouble hearing when there is noise in the background? K yes K no Is it hard for me to follow a conversation when two or more people talk at once? K yes K no Do I have to strain to understand a conversation? K yes K no Do many people I talk to seem to mumble or not speak clearly? K yes K no Do I misunderstand what others are saying and respond inappropriately? K yes K no Do I often ask people to repeat themselves? K yes K no Do people complain that I turn the TV volume up too high? K yes K no Do some sounds seem too loud? Walk your way to good health

20 | Spring ‘10 | generations

Walking and Wellness How would you like to add a few years to your life expectancy? You can do this and so much more by maintaining a walking program. Being one of the simplest and safest aerobic exercises you can do, walking will help you strengthen your bones, control your weight, and condition your heart and lungs. Consistency in your routine is one of the most important factors in developing a healthy physical activity program. Research has shown that people who walk approximately 20-25 miles per week outlive those who don’t walk by several years. Walking uses up oxygen, causing your body to burn stored fat. For example, you’ll expend about 100 calories by walking a mile. That might not seem like a lot at first, but just think about it. Most people average just under 3 miles through the course of their day. If you add an enjoyable morning jaunt or a brisk evening walk you could easily move 4 miles a day. If you walk 4 miles 4 times a week, you can burn 1600 calories! That’s half a pound of fat gone. Add more steps to your day while making sure not to eat more calories than you use, and your body can’t help but trim down. Another benefit to walking is that it strengthens muscles, which tones and shapes your body. The increased muscle mass boosts your metabolism. This means you burn calories long after you stop moving. And you don’t have to get all of your walking in at once. If you don’t have time for long walks, find pockets of time throughout your day for short jaunts. Whether you’re strolling through a mall, hiking through a park, or walking your dog around the neighborhood, walking lifts your spirits, clears your mind, and improves your health – all without fancy equipment, scheduled classes, or a high price tag.

“Whether you’re strolling through

Quick facts

a mall, hiking through a park, or

about walking:

walking your dog around the neighborhood, walking lifts your spirits, clears your mind, and improves your health”

V V V V

On average, every minute of walking can extend your life by 1.5 to 2 minutes. That’s about a 2 for 1 trade-off! Walking an extra 20 minutes each day will burn off 7 pounds of body fat per year. Longer, moderately-paced daily walks (40 minutes at 60% to 65% maximum heart rate) are best for losing weight. Shorter, faster walks (20-25 minutes at 75% to 85% maximum heart rate) are best for conditioning your heart and lungs.

Maximize Your Walk Any form of walking burns calories and improves muscle definition. However, to get the most from your walk, concentrate on these main points: Choose distance over speed. It’s better to walk at a steady pace than walk too quickly and have to quit early. As your fitness level improves, you can speed up gradually. Go for the hills. To help build your muscles, alternate inclines. Try walking up stairs, bleachers, or hills. Warm up slowly. Walk the first few minutes at an easy pace to get your body prepared. If your start is too brisk, you risk burning only the immediate sugar supply in your body rather than the stored fat you want to lose.

Oh - What Decorating Can Do When Re-inventing Your Life Today’s boomer and boomer- plus homeowners are my favorite clients. It’s so much fun to see people re-invent themselves as I renovate and decorate their homes.

By Natalie Weinstein Allied ASID For further information on Interior Design please contact Natalie Weinstein at 631- 862-6198 or www.natalieweinstein.com.

Amazingly, transformations generally occur in both (home and client, that is) with one following swiftly on the heels of the other. “How can that be," you ask. The answer is a simple one word explanation - change. If people are willing to change their homes - modernize, update, pare down, open space and find a new, yet timeless style, they will next look at themselves with the same critical eye. For many years I have believed with all my heart that your surroundings deeply affect you, for good or bad, knowingly or not. A nurturing and empowering home is your safe haven if it is clean, organized, and maintained. What you put into it will return to you tenfold, and I’m not only talking about money. Change often comes when homeowners have lived in their home 2530 years, or they are relocating to downsize or create another lifestyle. This is a golden opportunity and most folks seize it. I did, which only proves that some

of us in the decorating game actually practice what they preach. About 11 years ago my husband and I sold our home in Nissequogue and purchased a condo near Smith Haven Mall. Going from almost 4500 square feet to 1950 square feet was a bit of a challenge, but by utilizing space to its max, we achieved our goals. Ample storage and entertaining space in a warm and inviting atmosphere, a floor plan incorporating a master bedroom on the main floor, and no exterior maintenance, were the things we were looking for and got. I look back now & laugh at the moving process with my dear pack rat “can’t have enough tools” husband and 30 + years of stuff. Many dumpsters later and 50 boxes marked “Bernie’s important stuff” safely stored in our old barn at the office (yet to be opened more than a decade later), we entered the next phase of life. We settled in, made new friends, walked to the mall, the movies, the supermarket and adapted to the changes. One huge change was in Bernie who now, after 35 years, embraced “neat

and orderly,” if not completely organized (hey, you can’t have everything). It was so funny to watch as he became the “reformed clutterer” at my seminars. I, too, took a good long look at myself and decided it was time to shape up in my new surroundings. Blessed with “tall” genes, I could hide a few pounds easily, but the few had turned to too many. As a 43rd wedding anniversary present to myself, I hired a personal trainer, started a healthier eating regime, changed my hairstyle and turned back the clock. (No-no face lifts!) Bernie, too, adopted my eating habits and finally had the scale heading in the right direction. Anyone can be motivated to change. Sometimes, unfortunately, it’s when bad things happen health-wise. I’d rather see it occur for a happy reason like entering a new stage of life in your home whether you’re staying or moving. Take a picture of your “80s” house & put it in a memory box. Then make a plan to create a new lifestyle for the “you” of today. Your home is a great place to begin and the rest will follow. I know. Next time, we will focus on making your home a fun destination for friends, family and most of all - you.

Salads Healthy and light, salads are a quick and nutritious meal any night of the week.

S

alads have always been a favorite of mine. Using a variety of ingredients, flavors and textures are what produce interesting and tasty main meals. The dressing can be bottled or your own. Add fruits, cheeses, fish, beans and meats, even your leftovers (grilled chicken, chopped steak, turkey or ham, eggs and veggies) and you have created another meal.

Greek Salad Top with strips of grilled chicken, lamb or beef

2 Tbsp olive oil, extra virgin 2 Tbsp water or chicken broth 1 tsp lemon zest 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1/4 tsp table salt 1/4 tsp black pepper, freshly ground 3 Tbsp dill, or mint, fresh, chopped 3 Tbsp scallions, sliced 1 1/2 cups tomatoes, ripe, diced (about 7 small tomatoes) 1 1/2 cups cucumbers, diced, seedless (about 1/2 large cucumber) 8 medium olives, Kalamata, pitted, chopped 6 cups lettuce, Romaine, shredded 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese In a medium bowl, whisk together oil, water, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt and pepper until blended; stir in dill and scallions. Add tomatoes, cucumber and olives; toss to mix and coat.

White Bean and Salmon Salad with Lemon Dressing Salmon and beans pair wonderfully with citrus in this nocook meal. 15 oz canned white beans, drained and rinsed 16 oz canned salmon, pink, flaked with a fork, bones removed 1 small red onion, diced 1 bunch arugula, stems removed, chopped 1/4 cup parsley, fresh, chopped 1 tsp lemon zest 1 tsp thyme, fresh, chopped 3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 Tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp table salt 1/2 tsp black pepper, freshly ground Combine all ingredients in a large bowl; mix thoroughly and serve.

Caribbean Turkey and Couscous Salad

1 1/2 tsp curry powder, divided 1 tsp ginger root, fresh, grated 1 tsp olive oil 1 cup uncooked couscous, plainvariety 1/3 cup plain fat-free yogurt 1/4 cup cilantro, fresh, chopped 2 Tbsp reduced-calorie mayonnaise 2 Tbsp mango chutney 2 Tbsp water 10 oz cooked turkey breast, torn into thick shreds or cut into bitesize pieces 1 cup grapes, red, seedless, halved 1 cup pineapple, fresh, diced 3/4 cup mangoes, fresh, diced 12 pieces lettuce, Boston-variety 1/4 cup scallions, sliced 1 1/4 oz cashews, unsalted, roasted, coarsely chopped (about 4 tbsp) (optional)

Bring 1 1/2 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of curry powder, ginger and oil to a boil in a small saucepan. Add couscous; remove from heat and let stand, covered, until water is absorbed and couscous is tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer couscous to a large bowl and fluff with a fork to separate grains; place in refrigerator for a few minutes to chill slightly. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir yogurt, cilantro, mayonnaise, chutney, remaining 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder and 2 tablespoons of water together until blended. Pour over couscous; toss to coat. Add turkey, grapes, pineapple and mango to couscous mixture; toss to mix and coat. Apples or melon also work well in this recipe.

In addition to the great views, the course plays over a variety of terrain comprising of both park and links land settings. The ever-shifting shore breeze guarantees a stern test and a round that never quite plays the same way twice.

Tallgrass At Shoreham Shoreham, NY, 11786 (631) 209-9359 This 18-hole, par 72 Scottish links-style course measures just over 6,500 yards from the back tees. Constructed on more than 150-acres of Long Island farmland, Tallgrass boasts wide-open fairways and well manicured greens, and strategically placed pot and waste bunkers.

Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course Montauk, NY, 11954 (631) 668-1100 This legendary championship course with spectacular views of the ocean is built on rolling terrains with many fairways, greenside white sand bunkers, deep punishing rough and 5 waterholes. Most of the greens are elevated, undulating and well bunkered. The almost constant wind of the Atlantic ocean and Block Island sound makes this course very difficult.

Golf Injury Prevention Many injuries occur early in the season before proper conditioning has taken place. Such injuries may affect soft tissues including tendons, muscles and ligaments, as well as the joints of the upper body. Attention to technique is critical to avoid injury, which can result from overswinging, twisting the spine, an incorrect grip or hitting the ground during the forward swing.

To avoid back injury: Rotate the shoulder and hip about the same degree during the backswing. Keep the spine vertical during the follow-through, avoiding any hyperextension of the spine.

To avoid shoulder and elbow injury: Shorten the length of the backswing, ending with the club head at a 1 o’clock rather than 3 o’clock position. Strengthen rotator cuff and scapular muscles to prevent overuse or tearing injuries. Strengthen muscles of the chest and back, which generate the power of the swing. Study the mechanics of proper swing with a pro. Slow the velocity of the swing in order to produce less shock to the arm when the ball is struck.

To avoid hand, wrist and elbow injuries: Select larger and softer club grips. Use a neutral grip to hold the club. Select irons with larger heads and lower vibration. Graphite shafts can lessen vibration. Select the correct club length. Strengthen forearm muscles through exercise. Physical conditioning of appropriate muscles along with careful attention to correct technique tends to limit injury. Hitting practice balls with shorter irons is a good means of loosening the muscles and avoiding strains. Additionally, a consistent warm-up routine and corestrengthening exercises should be part of an overall approach to injury-free enjoyment of the game. www.generationsmagazine.com | 27

Time May Be Right to Convert to Roth IRA Do you regularly contribute to a traditional IRA? If so, you’re taking an important step toward building financial resources for retirement. But it’s possible that you could take an even bigger step— by converting your IRA to a Roth IRA. And you may have two especially good opportunities to make this conversion in 2009 and 2010. Before we examine why this may be so, let’s take a quick look at the differences between a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA. Depending Which IRA is on your income level, your “better”? There’s no contributions to a one right answer for traditional IRA may be tax everyone. Generally deductible; regardless of your income, your earnings speaking, though, grow tax deferred. With a the combination of Roth IRA, your potential tax-free contributions are never earnings and no deductible, but your RMDs might make earnings grow tax free, provided you’ve had your the Roth IRA an account for at least five years attractive choice for and you don’t start taking most people. withdrawals until you’re 591/2. However, if your modified adjusted gross income exceeds certain levels ($120,000 per year if you’re single and $176,000 per year if you’re married and filing a joint return), you can’t contribute to a Roth IRA. Here’s another distinction between the two types of IRAs: With a traditional IRA, you must start taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) when you reach 70-1/2. But if you own a Roth IRA, you are never required to take distributions, so you can let your money grow as long as you can afford not to touch it. Which IRA is “better”? There’s no one right answer for everyone. Generally speaking, though, the combination of potential tax-free earnings and no RMDs might make the Roth IRA an attractive choice for most people. Additionally you have access to the money you put into the Roth taxfree and penalty-free at any time, as long as you are not withdrawing earnings. So, if you have a traditional IRA, you might wish to convert it to a Roth — if you can. If your adjusted gross income is more than $100,000, you can’t make the conversion in 2009. Also, keep in mind that any conversion will require you to pay income taxes on your pre-tax contributions to your traditional IRA and any growth in your account’s value. If you meet the income limits for a conversion in 2009, you might want to consider doing so, because your tax obligation for a Roth conversion might be lower in 2009 28 | Spring ‘10 | generations

than it would have been in previous years. Following last year’s steep market decline, the value of your IRA may be down significantly — and, generally speaking, the lower the value, the lower the tax bill upon conversion. Furthermore, if your income is somewhat dependent on the state of the economy, you could end up with lower earnings in 2009 — another factor that could lessen the tax impact of a Roth IRA conversion. Even if you don’t make the conversion in 2009, though, you may still want to consider this move next year. Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, you can convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA regardless of your income level. tips to healthy nails

It’s important to have healthy nails. And, like everything else, you have to work at it. These five tips can help you keep your nails looking their best!

1

• Keep your nails dry and clean - You can prevent bacteria from growing under the nails by cleaning your nails regularly and thoroughly drying your hands and feet after bathing. It’s also important to wear rubber gloves when cleaning with soap and water.

2 3 4 5

• Don’t bite your nails or pick at your cuticles - These habits can damage the nail bed. Even a minor cut alongside your nail can allow bacteria to enter and cause an infection. • Moisturize your nails frequently - Just like your skin, nails need moisture. During the day, be sure to rub lotion into your nails when moisturizing your hands. • Never pull off hangnails – it will almost always result in ripping living tissue. Instead, clip hangnails, leaving a slight angle outward. • Watch for problems - If you have a nail problem that doesn’t go away on its own, make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked.

Think back to your early twenties. You are strolling through the cosmetic department of your favorite store in the mall and the perky girl behind the counter beckons invitingly, “Would you like to find out what season you are?” With a twinge of curiosity and possibly even excitement, you head over to the counter during which time you are spritzed by the equally perky perfume tester. The makeup salesgirl then eyes you intently as you sit in the chair awaiting her sage advice. With a smile, she then declares confidently, “you are definitely a spring! Go with corals, peaches, teals and periwinkles! “ And so you did. For years, in the back of your mind those words affected your choice of makeup and clothes. You limited yourself for fear of going outside your “season.” Sound familiar? It happened to all of us. Now, we are older and definitely need to update our thinking! The season determination is made to reflect which colors best suit your natural hair and eye color and skin tone. The colors we wear in both clothing and cosmetics need to compliment our natural tones. The problem we face as we age is that those natural tones change, and that means we need to change how we compliment them. At forty-something, although we might still be that “spring” or “autumn”, we simply cannot wear those teal and coral shades in the same way we did

in our twenties. We need to update our techniques. Let’s look at skin tone first. Examine your face honestly. Has your skin tone lightened a bit over the years? Have age spots appeared, are wrinkles visible, have your lips become slightly thinner, maybe your eye circles become a bit darker? Any or all of these are common with age. Foundations need to cover our flaws better, but also need to be shearer so they don’t appear heavy. Using a sponge to blend foundations and cover ups is essential. You don’t want makeup caked in a laugh line or eye wrinkle. That will actually age your face more than the wrinkle itself. Also, try a moisturizing bronzer. Bronzers can add a tint of color without looking harsh or heavy on the skin. Make sure they blend naturally into the color of skin in the neck area. Nothing looks worse than the “chin line” after foundation is applied, at any age. The season color choices you have held onto since that fateful day in the mall can still hold true. In general, the best advice for any color is…blend. Look at the colors in your season, and wear them with an easier, more blended look. If you are a spring, then enjoy the teal shadows, but lighten the impact. Apply the color sparingly, and blend it out into a gradual fade. Line the eye, but blend into a thinner hint of color at the lashline. Avoid iridescent colors. A brightly shimmering eye shadow is a definite no. The only place for a light

beauty focus iridescence would be a small amount just under the brow for highlighting purposes. For your lips, go with a sheer lip color as opposed to the thick, opaque lipstick products. As for blush products, apply your blush, be it a cream or powder, with a lighter hand to lightly tint the cheeks. Another issue to update is hair color. If your hair color has changed drastically, you might want to reevaluate your season choices. If you have gone from dark to light, or added reds to your hair, you have changed your palette considerably. Make sure your makeup color choices reflect your hair color now – not back then. There is no reason to avoid color after forty. On the contrary, rediscover your season colors and wear them with new vibrancy. Now the fun part…let’s find your season. The season colors fall into two categories…warm and cool. Spring and autumn season colors are warm, and summer and winter season colors are cool.

Spring - pale, softer colors are best. Hair color: flaxen, honey or strawberry blonde, any shade of red, light auburn, golden brown or medium gray. Eye color: shades of blues or greens or a golden brown. Skin tint: creamy ivory, peachy pink or peachy beige, freckles if a redhead, golden beige or golden brown, likely to have rosy cheeks. Springs look best in chocolate browns, light blues, medium violets, clear reds, peaches and yellows. Avoid black, white, burgundy or anything too dark. Best eye shadow colors are apricots, golden browns, browns, aqua, teals, blues and greens. Lip colors should be peach, coral, pinks, and red (not too dark). Avoid browns and purples. Blush tints are warm pink, peach, and coral. Jodie Foster is a spring.

Autumn - rich, golden, spicy,

Winter - sharp, intense, rich colors are best. Hair color: dark brown, medium brown, often lacking highlights. Eye color: brown, deep hazel, gray, possible blue or green Skin tint: beige, no pink undertones Winters look best in grays, blacks, whites, royal, true or icy blues, emerald greens, light yellows, reds, navy blue, pinks, royal purple. Avoid orange, gold, brown, tan, ivory or peach. Eye shadow colors are gray, blue, smoked blue, mauve and ash tones. Lipstick colors are burgundy, bluered, plum and red. Avoid oranges, red browns or any browns. Blush tints for winter are rose, light burgundy and mauves. Elizabeth Taylor is a winter.

Summer - soft neutrals and pastels, muted colors are best. Hair color: flaxen, light, medium blondes, very light browns. Eye color: blues, greens, aqua, soft hazel. Skin tone: pinkish beige, fair with visual pink in skin. Summers look best in rose, light burgundy, lemon yellow, lavender, sky blue, white, blue green and cocoa brown. Avoid black, green, orange, gold and purple. Eye shadow colors are ash blue, turquoise, mauve, light brown and plum. Lipstick colors are burgundy, plum, brown and clear red. Avoid orange red, light pinks, red brown. Blush tints for summer are pinks and shades of rose. Michele Pfeiffer is a Summer. Now that you’ve found your season once again, have fun with the colors. The worst thing we can do as we mature is give in to that neutral, colorless way of thinking. There are wonderful ways to celebrate the colors that look best on you. Remember, fabulous at forty, fantastic at fifty, sensational at sixty …. you get the idea!

earth colors are best. Hair color: golden blonde, copper, red, brown (usually with a golden or red highlight) Eye color: brown or green, flecks of gold Skin tint: golden or peachy beige Autumns look best in orange, dark red, gold, yellow, teal, creamy white, green, periwinkle, beige, turquoise, dark brown, bronze. Avoid black, navy, gray, pink, burgundy, purple and red. Eye shadow colors are beige, apricot, brown, copper, muted greens and smoky turquoise. Lip colors are brick red, orange, red coral peach, rust, mocha and brown shades. Avoid frosted shades and tawny peaches. Sophia Loren is an autumn. www.generationsmagazine.com | 31

Exposing a Silent Killer: Protecting Yourself from Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms While diseases like prostate cancer and heart disease have become household concerns, abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), the 10th leading cause of death in men age 55 and older, have been overshadowed by more prominent diseases for far too long. It’s time we pull back the curtain and take a closer look at this serious disease and how it can be both detected and prevented. by Dr. Mark Adelman An AAA, which is one of the conditions associated with vascular disease, is a bulge that develops in the body’s main blood vessel, the aorta. As the aneurysm expands within the aorta, the chances of it rupturing increase. However, AAAs generally develop without noticeable symptoms. Often times, people do not realize they have an aneurysm until it ruptures, giving the disease its “silent killer” status. In fact, the survival rate for patients with ruptured AAAs is only 20 to 50 percent. It is suspected that AAAs are passed down from generation to generation as they are most common in patients with a family history of aneurysms. Men are also more likely than women to develop an AAA. When women exhibit aneurysmal disease, it is usually correlated with a very strong genetic predisposition to the condition. Although the condition is asymptomatic, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can reduce your chances of developing an AAA. Offering another reason to limit high cholesterol foods, maintain a moderate amount of exercise, and avoid cigarettes, elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure have also been proven to increase the likelihood of developing a potentially fatal AAA. AAAs may be detected during a routine medical examination. Sometimes during a physical exam, a physician may be able to feel an AAA below your ribcage or above your belly button. Currently, AAAs are most commonly detected incidentally during xrays being performed for other reasons. For example, patients with kidney stones, back pain, or gastrointestinal problems will often undergo a MRI or CAT scan and it’s during these tests that an aneurysm is identified. However, because even experienced physicians can sometimes miss an AAA, at-risk 32 | Spring ‘10 | generations

patients should consider an ultrasound screening specifically for AAA. This short, noninvasive examination of the aorta can easily identify nearly all AAAs. In fact, Medicare advises and reimburses AAA screening at the time of enrollment for male Medicare beneficiaries age 65+ who have a history of smoking www.vascularweb.org/professionals/Government_Re lations/National_Aneurysm_Alliance_SAAAVE_Bill/i ndex.html If you are diagnosed early with an AAA, it will typically be evaluated on a periodic basis to determine its rate of growth. Once it reaches a size at which the risk for rupture is increased (approximately 5 cm in diameter), intervention is often recommended. A physician may offer two types of intervention. Traditional, open surgical repair has been used to treat AAA for more than 50 years with success. However, in the last 10-15 years, a minimally invasive approach that uses stent grafting has gained popularity in repairing the AAA to prevent rupture. This procedure, called endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), is typically done during an overnight stay in the hospital and involves two small incisions in the groin. A covered stent is introduced through the groin and into the aorta. Once in place, the stent serves as a liner to the aneurysm, similar to placing a tube in side of a damaged tire to prevent the tire from bursting. It’s important to remember that by making simple lifestyle choices, you can reduce your risk of developing an AAA. Moreover, even though patients with AAA typically do not show any symptoms, the condition is easy to detect with minimally invasive ultrasound technology. As with all serious medical conditions, if you are at high risk for aneurysms, or suspect you might have an AAA, you should be evaluated by your internist or your vascular surgeon. Dr. Mark Adelman is the Chief of Vascular Surgery for New York University Langone Medical Center.

“Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?” Personal property - all our stuff - is an issue that is getting more play these days, thanks to Oprah and her shows about hoarding. More and more often, there are stories in the newspaper and on TV about the crisis of “stuff” in people’s lives and homes. Dealing with the issues that surround personal property is usually postponed until there is a crisis or an immediate need arises. The transfer of personal property is often considered secondary to the titled assets such as homes, bank accounts, cars, and stock portfolios. But for families, the process of the disposition of personal property is often more heart-wrenching and can be fraught with emotional responses from the participants. There are various resources available to help individuals and families deal with the issues, in advance of a crisis. One resource is the workshop and workbook developed by Marlene Stum of the University of Minnesota Extension Service. Marlene’s research project with hundreds of Midwestern families identified several steps and concerns. From that research, she developed the workbook and worksheets to help clarify the issues. The first thing to remember is that this is a sensitive issue and there are no magic formulas for transferring property. It is important to recognize and acknowledge that within any family there may be long-standing concerns and expectations that will affect even the desire to start the discussions. However, remember that by starting with “I” statements and indicating that beginning this discussion is important to you, it will get the process started. You may choose to meet together or individually, just to get started. Remember to stay on topic, listen carefully and clarify any concerns and finish the conversation. You have set the stage to move forward with more discussions and actually get into the decision process as well. Please keep in mind that your “stuff” is your “stuff.” It does not belong to anyone else until you choose. Take some time and think about your goals as well. You may even want to write them down as they come to mind. Ask yourself - do you want to contribute to society and donate to your alma mater, a university, a museum, local charity, or philanthropic organization? Do you want to preserve family rituals and memories? Do you want to preserve family secrets? Do you want to improve family relationships? Do you have other goals that are important? Do you have co-owners who need to be consulted? What is the most important outcome for you? 34 | Spring ‘10 | generations

10 Ways to Prevent

Kidney Disease By Simon E. Prince MD

Dr. Prince

of North Shore Nephrology in Manhasset NY is a boardcertified nephrologist, specializing in chronic kidney disease and hypertension. For further info please call (516) 365-5570 or visit www.nsneph.com

Evidence suggests that kidney disease is on the 5. Embrace a healthy lowrise in our country. Recent statistics, provided by calorie diet Watching your diet is one National Kidney Foundation, are quite disturbing. More than 30 million Americans, including children, suffer from Kidney disease. 1 in 9 Americans will eventually develop some form of kidney disorder in their lifetime. More than 7,000 of our fellow Long Islanders are undergoing intense kidney replacement therapy, known as dialysis. The number of Americans waiting for kidney transplant continues to increase. A new name is added to the waiting list every 12 minutes. Sadly, most people are in denial when it comes to their kidney disease risk. Here is why: there is no pain, no symptoms, no sense of discomfort in the body, which means that there is no reason to be concerned and no need to see a doctor. Before being diagnosed most patients don’t even realize they have a problem. Our kidneys are vital organs. I hope my suggestions below will serve as a guide to your kidney health and help you maintain a productive lifestyle for years to come.

1. Keep track of your cholesterol High levels of cholesterol lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. That’s why you should closely monitor and control your cholesterol level. I suggest you embrace a healthy diet, proper exercise, and if necessary, use medications prescribed by your physician.

2. Develop a weight loss program Significant weight gain can lead to a decreased kidney function. To shed those extra pounds it is crucial to develop a healthy exercise routine combined with an appropriate diet. You don’t have to engage in lengthy or strenuous activity. Quite often, housekeeping duties, gardening, playing with your kids or walking your dog can make a difference.

3. Quit smoking Smoking can cause chronic kidney disease (CKD) and it increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Using tobacco products can result in hardening and narrowing of the arteries. This, in turn, puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease.

4. Stay well-hydrated It’s essential to develop an appropriate hydration strategy and drink plenty of water. Don’t consume too much, 8 cups of water is usually a norm, but individual needs may vary. 36 | Spring ‘10 | generations

of the most important aspects of preventing kidney disorder. Most people who suffer from chronic kidney disease have an enhanced reaction to salt. Reduce salt and sodium intake and eliminate high fat diets from your diet. Those with more advanced cases of CKD should limit phosphorus-rich foods, such as milk, whole grains, dried beans, organ meat, chocolate, cola drinks, etc.

6. Control your diabetes Diabetes is the most frequent cause of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). That’s when the loss of Kidney function progresses to the point where you need dialysis or transplantation. If you carefully monitor your blood sugar levels, you are more likely to prevent the onset of small blood vessel disease which leads to progressive CKD.

7. Avoid certain over-the-counter medications Beware of certain medications that can worsen your kidney function. Even common over-the-counter pills, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen, or some herbs and supplements, can facilitate kidney ailments.

8. Have your blood pressure checked regularly High blood pressure is the second most common cause of ESRD. It can lead to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, or kidney disease. I highly recommend regular monitoring of your blood pressure and aggressive therapy.

9. Watch for symptoms of anemia If you regularly experience fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, or dizziness, you might be anemic. If left untreated, anemia can contribute to kidney disease.

10. Follow-up with your Kidney Specialist The only way to find out if you have kidney disease is to get examined by a qualified physician. Checking kidney function is a simple procedure, requiring a physical exam and blood and urine testing. Studies indicate that closely monitoring your kidney function with a nephrologist increases the longevity of your kidneys and prevents the need for dialysis. Concluding Thoughts: Kidney disease is a chronic condition. It does not go away and tends to get worse over time. Fortunately, it can be treated and deterioration may be prevented. The sooner you find out about your condition, the sooner you can initiate treatment and get back to living a healthy and productive life.

Cosmetic Dentistry at any Age So you really think you are too old for cosmetic dentistry? Well, you should know that cosmetic dentistry can brighten a smile of any age. My eldest patient is 96 years old and she is still proud of her smile. I recently added composite bonding to her two front teeth and removed some yellow fillings – relatively inexpensive and a one visit procedure. Depending on your age and health, several cosmetic dental procedures are available, ranging from teeth bleaching and bonding to more complex procedures consisting of porcelain veneers, ceramic crowns and implants. A simple whitening procedure can brighten teeth that are yellow or gray from age. There are several options ranging from drugstore brighteners to custom dental trays or inoffice whitening, depending on your budget and the quality of whitening desired. Composite bonding is another procedure that can be used to close a space between teeth, to repair chipped teeth or to replace worn-out silver fillings. The composite material is chemically bonded to the tooth and polished to match the remaining tooth surface. For a more long-lasting solution, the modern porcelain veneer offers the most esthetic result. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that bond to the teeth. The porcelain veneer does not discolor and requires less tooth reduction than conventional crowns.

If a tooth is too damaged for a composite or porcelain veneer then an esthetic crown may be the answer. Today we have all-ceramic crowns and Zirconia crowns that are more life-like than the porcelain-to-metal crowns in by use for the past 30 years. Terry S. Shapiro, D.M.D. People are always embarrassed to 20 Old Post Road smile if it is only to uncover a missing East Setauket, NY 11733 tooth. Today the dental implant is a 631-751-4433 durable replacement that functions like www.drterryshapiro.com the missing tooth. A less costly option to replace a missing tooth is the bonded bridge for areas of light function or the conventional bridge, both of which can be fabricated of all-ceramic materials. Some cosmetic procedures are elective, but other times the unsightly teeth are symptomatic of underlying dental disease. So a cosmetic procedure may also be an investment in your dental health and might even be covered by your dental insurance. Teeth bleaching, composite bonding, porcelain veneers, all-ceramic crowns, bridges and implants are all cosmetic procedures, sometimes just different ways to solve a problem. Talk to a highly trained cosmetic dentist and explore what is the right solution for you!
