Introduction to BGSU The mission of BGSU’s DPT program is to develop Doctors of Physical Therapy who create positive change in the lives of their patients and communities. We achieve this by teaching competence, innovation, application, research, inclusion and collaboration.

Our faculty, all renowned members of the physical therapy profession with a commitment to the education of the next generation of physical therapy professionals, have passionately and ardently created a two-year intensive curriculum designed to challenge and empower BGSU DPT students. Our Learning Model: Accelerated + Hybrid Accelerated Defined This approach allows completion of the DPT degree requirements in two years (versus the traditional three) while still meeting the established timing and content standards set by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Hybrid Defined BGSU DPT students experience the benefit of living anywhere in the country while still being a part of the BGSU community. The accelerated, hybrid DPT program infuses contemporary learning technologies and experiences into modern professional training for aspiring physical therapists. By combining the best practices of distance learning with live, face-to-face immersive lab experiential sessions, the student is prepared to grow through clinical experiences both in their respective community as well as at nationally recognized centers of health care.

How Hybrid?

Students come to campus to learn psychomotor skills in lab immersions, six times (two weeks each) the first year while concurrently engaging with faculty and classmates in virtual synchronous and asynchronous course activities. During the second-year students begin to participate in clinical education internship experiences and come to campus for two lab immersions. This learning style is highly collaborative, engaging, and rigorous; the accelerated, hybrid curriculum requires the student to be a selfstarter, highly organized, motivated and open to learning in new ways.

Accreditation: Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100, Alexandria, Virginia 22305-3085; phone; 703-706-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states. Bowling Green State University is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from CAPTE. On 11/29/2021, the program submitted an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. CAPTE Rules of Practice and Procedure January 2021 54. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.

Clinical Education Clinical education provides students with exposure to a variety of physical therapy practice settings and a wide range of patient populations across the lifespan. These fulltime experiences take place during the second year of study and immerse students into clinical settings as they learn to function as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Clinical education experiences provide students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to clinical situations under the direct supervision and guidance of experienced physical therapist clinicians. In clinical learning environments, students develop safe and effective skills in all aspects of patient care while also developing the ability to work as an integral part of the interprofessional healthcare team.

Clinical education is essential in developing our students into highly competent clinicians for successful entry into the physical therapy profession upon graduation. We are committed to providing opportunities that will allow our students to work in a wide variety of settings and ultimately be positioned to transition to a residency position after graduation if desired. The profession of physical therapy is moving forward, and our clinical education program is focused on keeping our graduates ahead of the curve.

WHAT MAKES OUR CLINICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM DIFFERENT?

Students will experience an inpatient and outpatient experience along with two different specialty settings in at least one medically underserved area to provide students with a breadth of diverse patient and practice exposure.

The clinical education team at BGSU begins the vetting process of procuring a variety clinical site agreements based on cohort demographics and program requirements. Students are invited to complete a “Wishlist” which will allow the clinical education team to match students based on their clinical education site desires while also considering the student’s past experiences, site location, quality of clinical faculty/site, student goals, and residency options.

Didactic courses taken concurrently during clinical education allow students to “bring the classroom into the clinic, and the clinic into the classroom”.

Students directly apply the concepts learned in these didactic courses to their patients and then share these clinical experiences with their class during case-based discussions and assignments.

A terminal internship experience in a specialty concentration allows each student to align their clinical education with their professional practice goals. These terminal experiences fully prepare students for postprofessional residency opportunities and/or entry-level practice in a clinical practice setting of their choosing.

CLINICAL FACULTY Clinical faculty are an integral part of our clinical experiences for students, and so we invest in those faculty by offering them access to library and Access Physiotherapy textbook resources as well as the opportunity to structure your clinical hands-on experiences to complement your online curriculum. Many of your clinical faculty in the final internship are specialists in their field, have completed residency or fellowship training, and are chosen for their expertise and eagerness to work with students.

NEXT STEPS

Accepted students will receive a link to a survey to indicate their preferences. We try our best to match clinical sites to student need. Students will be given a chance to review available sites and indicate preference durng the matching process.

Cost of Attending Tuition for the two-year BGSU Doctor of Physical Therapy program is $95,000. This price includes annual tuition cost of $47,500, books, a physical therapist toolkit/supplies and a treatment table for at-home skills practice. There are no additional university or lab fees, and books/learning resources are provided through the BGSU University Libraries databases and Evidence In Motion’s Learning Academy library and linked through the Canvas Instructure learning management system.

Travel Expectations The costs of attending do not include any travel or lodging requirements for lab immersion sessions or clinical education experiences. Students are required to make their own travel and lodging arrangements for these instructional periods. Any needed travel expenses and clinical education lodging will vary by student; during lab immersion sessions, most students will find local Bowling Green lodging options with classmates that are approximately $45/night per student.

FAQs Q1: I have not received my official letter of acceptance from BGSU, what should I do?

Please ensure that you have completed the BGSU Graduate College application as official letters of acceptance will not be issued until then. You will receive an email from BGSU Graduate College with log-in details in the two weeks following your acceptance email from BGSU School of Physical Therapy. If you have not received this email, please check your spam folder or reach out to us for more information.

Q2: My letter of acceptance indicates that I am being offered conditional acceptance, how do I get more details on the acceptance?

Conditional acceptances are offered to competitive applicants who have not completed all admissions requirements of BGSU’s DPT program and BGSU’s Graduate College. You would also receive an email from our Student Services Coordinator outlining any prerequisite coursework that needs to be completed prior to the start of the program.

Q3: Do I need to submit transcripts with my application to BGSU Graduate College?

If you have completed your Bachelor’s degree at the time of application to PTCAS and do not have outstanding prerequisites OR submitted transcripts for outstanding prerequisites through PTCAS, then you do not have to submit any additional transcripts with your application.

If you have not completed your Bachelor’s degree at the time of application to PTCAS, have outstanding prerequisites and have not updated them through PTCAS, you will need to submit the following: a. Official transcript showing completion of Bachelor’s degree b. Official transcript showing completion of prerequisite coursework Instructions for submitting transcripts to BGSU will be indicated on your official letter of acceptance.

Q4: How do I pay my tuition/seat deposit?

Tuition deposits are submitted through BGSU Graduate College. After submitting your application to BGSU’s Graduate College, you will receive your official acceptance from the university, together with a link to accept your offer and submit your tuition deposit.

Q5: I intend to enroll at BGSU DPT but am having trouble with paying the tuition deposit, what can I do?

Q6: Will I get a confirmation after submitting my tuition deposit?

Yes. You will receive an email confirmation from our Student Services Coordinator outlining next steps in the onboarding process.

Q7: When can I meet my future classmates?

Online orientation for the BGSU DPT Class of 2024 will begin Monday, June 6th, 2022. You will have the opportunity to communicate with your classmates during online orientation and will meet your classmates, faculty, and staff in person during onsite orientation in August 2022.
