Dear Prayer Partners, Greetings to you in the name of the Lord Jesus who delivers us from the hands of the deceiver and from the snares of the hunter (Ps 91:3). We are living in times when God’s children ought to be cautious but not fearful. The enemy may not directly attack us. But let us not forget that he attacks us through deception!

hope many of you have been blessed my previous letter where I had emphasized the absolute necessity for the church to lean on Jesus for our strength and not depend on Egypt. In this letter, I want the churches to learn from another attack that the redeemed nation of Israel faced, both before entering the Promised Land - Canaan and after. These attacks came through the Midianites and Moabites and we can learn a number of spiritual lessons from these. Who are the Midianites and Moabites? Midianites were the descendants of Abraham through his concubine Keturah (Gen. 25:1,4). When Moses fled Egypt, he went to Midian and sojourned there with Jethro, a Midianite priest and married his daughter (Exo. 2:15, 21). It appears the Midianites worshiped the LORDas when Moses briefed Jethro of the Lord’s doing, Jethro offered sacrifices to the Lord (Exo. 18:8-12). We also see that Moses highly respected and valued his father-in-law’s experience and knowledge of the Lord (Exo. 18:17-24). However, 2

these Midianites had business dealings with other nations and, in due course, began to believe in other religions, ways of life and magic (Gen. 37:28). It was similar to the Ishmaelite’s, the descendants of Abraham through Hagar, Sarah’s maid. Ishmael had the promise of God and His blessings and yet when Hagar got him married to an Egyptian girl, the Ishmaelite generation got corrupted. Moabites were the descendants of Lot, born out of incest with his elder daughter (Gen. 19:37). The Israelites were commanded that the Moabites should not be allowed into the presence of the Lord for 10 generations (Deut. 23:3). However, Ruth, a Moabitess, accepted the Lord (Ruth1:16), and became the great grandmother of David, the king of Israel. This was because of the mercy shown to her by Boaz, the kinsman redeemer who foreshadowed our Lord Jesus. The Moabites also had sold themselves to witchcraft, divination and magic. We see how the king of Moab, Balak tried to have Israel cursed through Baalam (Num. 22:5-7). When Israel arrived at the borders of Moab, on the east of Jordan, both Moab and Midian were in close relationship (Exo. 22:1-4) and therefore had the rule over Israel. What spiritual lessons can we learn? People who have heard the voice of the Lord and have received His promises can deviate when they get into wrong relationships like done by Hagar.Egypt was known for evils like magic, idolatry and divination from the early days of its existence. These practices can bring God’s people under bondage. One mark of these Ishmaelite’s was that they wore gold earrings (Judges 8:24) which had a bearing to their allegiance to false gods. When Jacob wanted to worship the Lord, as a family, on his way back from Haran, he asked all of them to put away the strange gods that were with themand be clean and change their garments. And we see that they not only handed over their strange gods to Jacob but also their The Call

earrings (Gen. 35:2-4)! Similarly, the Midianites mixed with the Egyptians and left following the Lord. This was due to their business relationships with Egypt. I am sure many of us know of Christian businessmen who are unable to perseverein their faith. They seek after foreign gods getting involved in astrology, looking for auspicious days, etc. For the sake of prosperity, they partner with black magicians. The Lord had clearly instructed Israel that He would not give the land of Moab to Israel and that they were not to trouble them (Deut. 2:9). Yet, the Moabites trembled at the number of Israel and their discipline and began to scheme against them(Num. 22:3). Even now, it’s natural for the unbelievers to get troubled at the increase of the followers of Christ and their discipline. The enemy is devising ways by which he can scuttle the discipline of God’s children. Despite clearly hearing God’s voice and prophesying God’s plan over Israel, due to covetousness, Baalam devised a cunning plan to make the people of Israel sin against God. He got the Moabites to entice Israel to commit both idolatry and adultery (Num. 25:1-3, Rev 2:14) and thereby leave their godly discipline. Listen to what Apostle Peter said: ‘‘Having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children; forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; but he received a rebuke for his own transgression, for a mute donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet. These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved. For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely The Call

escape from the ones who live in error’’ (2 Pet. 2:14-18). Today there are thousands of Balaam’s in our churches. They have name, fame and honour just as did Balaam. They pray as Balaam prayed, ‘May I die a righteous man’, but their end will be similar to Balaam who was destroyed by the sword of Israel (Joshua 13:21, 22). The women of Midian who joined Moab to seduce Israel were also slain by the sword of Phinehas. (Num. 25:7, 15). Our hearts are broken and grief stricken and we shed tears at the doctrines of Balaam that is practiced today which preventsGod’s people from inheriting the nation for the Lord. Failure in the Promised Land Eventually God brought His people into the Promised Land by the hands of Joshua and they began to inherit it. Gradually however, as laziness and carefree attitude set in, they failed to fulfill God’s commandments and became wicked. God then delivered them to the servitude of Midianites for seven years (Judges 6:1), during the time of Gideon. What was the root cause of it? The Lord had clearly commanded the Israelites to avenge the Midianites following the incitement of Balaam: ‘‘Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites’’(Num. 31:2). Moses sought to obey the Lord and he said to the people: ‘‘Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the Lord’s vengeance on Midian’’(Num. 31:3). But what did the people do? ‘‘The sons of Israel captured the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods they plundered’’ (Num. 31:9). Moses was angry and asked them, “Have you spared all the women? Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor (Num. 31:15, 16). The Call

So we can see the effect of disobeying the Lord’s command. There was fear, lack of safety, loss, plunder of their labour in the fields, nation being spoiled and such endless sorrow, all of which was a result of not obeying God’s command entirely. The result - Seven years of horror and anarchy! Then when Israel cried unto the Lord, He spoke through a prophet saying; “you did not obey my voice” (Judges 6:10). But God, looking at the pitiable condition of Israel who were trembling at the gods of Amorites, in His graciousness raised up trembling and weak Gideon to be a savior to Israel against Midian. What is our responsibility? The Lord is eager, even today, to raise up men and women who can rescue His people just as did Phinehas and Gideon. Even today, the Lord is eager to raise up Phinehasas and Gideons, Where are the righteous, Those that hear the voice of the Lord, The eyes that see whom the Lord has marked for Himself? Where are those who are burdened for the nation, Those that proclaim with the leader? Not beholding what’s in their hand, But the one’s beholding the sword of the Lord? Where are the warriors who turn night to day, The ones ready to break what ought to be broken? For Israel God gave a promise: ‘‘A multitude of camels will cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah’’ (Isa. 60:6). ‘‘For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; But the Lord will rise upon youand His glory will appear upon you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” (Isa. 60:2, 3). Considering this promise let us arise, for it is time. Whatever The Call

we may have lost, let us look to the hands of the Lord. His word that a little one shall become a thousand and a small one a strong nation is eternally true. The need of the hour is for men and women to arise to rescue people from slavery, hypocrisy and deceit of the present day Midianites and Moabites in our midst.

Crafty and deceitful preachers Abound in all our churches, Let’s identify them fearlessly, For the Lord of Hosts is with us endlessly.

By Him let’s destroy that we ought to, And remove the taresby His strength. Turn it into a garbage those we ought to be rid of, Pluck and cast away that which has to be moved.

Like unto the zeal of Phinehas and Gideon, We will commit to such a life. Restore and preserve even the backslidden, Follow Jesus as a Soldier for life.

People may grope in darkness, Earth may quake and dust flies all over, The earth of old fades and disappears, He is the refuge - may we show to the World.

Identify the enemy right, Sound the trumpet everywhere, May we arise against those who war with us For this is a sign of revival - Be aware. In His Vineyard Bro. D. Augustine Jebakumar

BLESSED OF THE LORD It is not about we ourselves calling us a blessing. A stranger calls Abraham’s servant ‘Blessed of the Lord’ (Genesis 24:31). Abraham calls his servant and commits him the task to find a wife for his son Isaac and forbids him to not take a girl from among the people he lives, the Canaanites and to not take Isaac to the place where Abraham came from. (Gen 24:3,5,6) Abraham’s servant Eliezer, completely committed this endeavour to the Lord in prayer (Gen 24:11,12). He not only prays for the task but also for his leader which shows his great love & respect for his leader. We can learn the following traits from this chapter from the life of Eliezer which made others to see him as a blessing. • Bound by the Covenant. He knew that he was sent on this task with a covenant that his master made and at no point did he compromise or break the covenant. • Complete commitment of the endeavour to the Lord. • Careful in every step of the work proving his trustworthiness to his leader and the task. • Continually looks for a confirmation from the Lord. • Totally available to be conducted (led) by the Lord. Such a blessed man could enjoy all that was prepared beforehand (Genesis 24:32,33). May the Lord help you to be committed to His purposes & to be completely led by Him so as to be blessed and to be a blessing! Blessings, Bro. D. Augustine Jebakumar

Missionaries Threatened and Believers Ostracised in North Bihar for the Faith GEMS missionaries and believers of Boriya (PEACE 3 Zone) and Manigachi (Maithili Zone) are constantly threatened for believing and preaching Jesus. Boriya – Continuously Threatened A group of fanatics affiliated to the Sangh gathered together on 1st February 2018 and threatened Bro. Susheel Kumar who is serving at Boriya in West Champaran. He and his wife Sis. Chandra are missionaries here. Since then they are receiving continuous threatening from this group to leave the place and to not preach the gospel. Pokhar a village in Manigachi came to the church along with eight other men & media and threatened the missionaries and falsely accused them of converting through allurement of money. For three hours the missionaries and Christian believers were forcefully detained. The opposers called for the police and the missionaries and believers were taken to the police station. In front of the police, the Mukhiya threatened the believers that they are set apart from the village for believing in Jesus and that all facilities will be denied for them; the police were a witness to this and did not take action against the Mukhiya or promise protection for the Christians. On 5th February newspaper Dainik Jagran published a false news on this incident in the title ‘Conversion in the name of Prayer’. Traditionally the Kanjar people have taken onto robbery and/ or begging for their livelihood. But the love of Jesus and the power of the gospel is transforming them to become good citizens; and they are now educating their children and doing other jobs. Joseph had engaged in conversation with the other passengers. Angered by their sharing of their faith, one of the passengers had called his associates who waited for the bus to reach Bettiah. As soon the bus reached and the passengers came down, they held the believers’ captive, which included women also and caught hold of the missionary and began to severely thrash him. As soon as the news reached the GEMS church at Bettiah where the meeting had begun, Dr. Ashok (Associate General Secretary, GEMS) and Bro. Palanivelu (Zonal Superintendent, PEACE 3) went to the Town Police Station. The police had reached the spot and took Bro. Joseph to the Government Hospital and treated him. When the S.P. of Bettiah Mr. Jayant Kant was reached over phone, he said that the issue looks like a matter of Human Trafficking. When the SHO of Town P.S. Mr. Nityanand Chauhan was reached, he said that he had received a general complaint of conversion. When they both were asked for the specifics of the complaint, The Call

they took back their words and promised to file F.I.R. and to investigate the matter to nab the culprits. It’s very sad to see the keepers of the law & administration trying to frame the victims instead of protecting the rights of every citizen and to uphold equality and justice. Though such an incident of violence against the Christian believers happened, the meeting continued and the people were blessed & inspired by the word of God. Bro. Paul Abraham (NW Regional Director) coordinated the meeting and along with Dr. Ashok, Bro. Bharat (Sugajeeva Ministries, Chennai) shared the messages.

Pray for the persecuted and traumatized missionary and believers of Bagaha to be strong in the Lord. Pray for those who opposed and persecuted that they may know the love of Jesus. Pray for all the believers who attended the camp to grow in the Lord as effective witnesses.   The Call
