The Nice Carnival

It is one of the key events of the year on our beautiful Riviera, one of the treasures of local and world heritage. This year he celebrated his 150th birthday. A look back at the history of the Nice Carnival, which warms hearts in the middle of winter.

The first edition dates a priori from 1294, writings stating that the Duke of Anjou attended. Carnival is first and foremost a popular celebration. Influenced by the Venetian carnival, masked balls and masquerades are in vogue. A few years later, we are in 1876, it is the appearance of the Battles of Flowers. At first we only talk about a simple exchange, then over time they are staged and poeticized. A real show in its own right, notably due to the imagination and talent of local gardener Alphonse Karr (who gave his name to a famous street in Nice). In the 19th century, Nice being the essential place for winter holidays, the carnival aims to promote the city, to show its assets, its art of living. A festival committee was created in 1873 which made the carnival a real show with entertainment, parades with floats. 2 artists from Nice imagine a float with His Majesty Carnival, the king has just been born. In 1892, Polichinelle, the traditional puppet of straw and rags which had hitherto been immobile in the prefecture square, was transformed into a royal Triboulet on a float. In 1893, a queen was annexed to him. It is then the 21st edition, it is time for the king to get married! An idea of Alexis Mossa (Painter and designer of many tank models) Until 1892, plaster confetti was used (a fertility ritual for women) also called Italian confetti. Paper confetti makes its appearance, more modern and more “comfortable” above all less dangerous. It made its appearance the previous year at the Paris carnival. Plaster confetti was finally banned from use in Nice in 1955.

The Nice Carnival, like many other events, has known its dark hours. The first and second world wars relegated the king. In 1939, the King came out with an equivocal theme «King of Joy and Laughter». 1991, also sees its carnival canceled, too many risks of attacks it is the Gulf war. 2020, the Covid 19 which plays trouble and Nice cancels the last 2 outings. 2021, the pandemic prevents the King from going out. The King of the World’s Treasures comes out with great fanfare to everyone’s delight. For these 2 weeks of festivities, more than 200,000 people attended the outings of the King and the Queen, no less than 20 tons of confetti. But it is in 2018 that the largest float parades with the King of Space 20.5m high!

A meager glimpse of what is a tradition in Nice, it is as noble as the Carnivals of Rio or Venice. A delight but also a wealth of memories that each person born in Nice has, whether with their parents first and with friends as they grow up. Because yes, I’m talking to you about a time when we could follow the floats in the company of big heads and where each of us was part of the party, on the sole condition of being disguised. A time when the float passed your friend held out his hand to you and you ended up on the float throwing flowers and confetti at the crowd with jaw-dropping giggles. But that was before…
