smoke vents

introduction

Smoke vents MCR-Prolight Plus are automatic smoke exhaust devices. The basic function of smoke vents MCR-Prolight is to exhaust smoke, combustion gases and heat energy from enclosed spaces (production floors, storage spaces, public facilities, etc.) to the outside of buildings, in order to protect human lives and property by: • maintaining escape routes with low smoke levels permitting effective evacuation, • facilitating fire-fighting action by easier location of the place of fire, • reducing the risk of destruction of the building structure by lowering the temperature, • limiting fire damage caused by smoke, hot combustion gases and thermal decomposition products. They may also serve the function of ventilation hatches, combined smoke and heat ventilators with daily ventilation, roof hatchways, as well as roof lighting. By using smoke vents, the investor gains the opportunity to: • reduce the fire resistance class of the building, • enlarge the acceptable fire zones, • lengthen the escape routes. Depending on the requirements of individual customers, MERCOR offers single-leaf and double-leaf smoke vents, on upright and skew curbs, in a wide range of opening dimensions and curbs heights. With prior inquiry, it is also possible to make curbs of dimensions not included in this technical guide. All steel elements of vents are protected with a zinc coating applied by hot-galvanising or electrogalvanising and chemically passivated. As standard, the bases are delivered with 20 mm thick thermal insulation. Individual selection of the thickness and type of thermal insulation is possible. The following filling types of openable leaf are used: • cellular polycarbonate, 10 to 25 mm thick, different degrees of transparency, different heat transfer coefficients, • single, double, and triple acrylic domes, • solid polycarbonate sheets, • laminar boards (e.g. aluminium – foamed polystyrene – aluminium) – so called “blind” filling. Detailed information about filling is given in the table (pages 37-38). Smoke vents MCR-Prolight are offered with the following control systems: • electrical control, • pneumatic control, • pneumatic-electrical control, • mechanical control. All these control systems may serve the function of smoke exhaust or smoke exhaust and daily ventilation. Opening of smoke vents may be realised both from the user level and automatically by thermal fuses, smoke exhaust control panels, or fire alarm signalling. Smoke vents of type MCR-Prolight offered by MERCOR satisfy the requirements of the technical approval ITB no. AT-15-6495/2005 confirmed by the certificate of conformity no. ITB-0920/W as well as the certificate of conformity in accordance with EN 12101-2: 2004

functions Continuous rooflights with integrated smoke hatches serve a triple function: • provide smoke and heat exhaust ventilation during fire, • provide lighting of rooms, • permit natural ventilation of the building. A continuous rooflight consist of a base and a dome.

6.0.2.

base of continuous rooflights The base of continuous rooflights is made of galvanised steel sheet of thickness 1.25 ÷ 5 mm and standard modular length 1000, 1250, 2500, 3000 mm. Standard base height is 300 mm or 500 mm. The base is equipped with a lower flange used for mounting the base on a trimmer beam or on the roof structure. Modular bases are connected with each other using bolted joints. The base is mounted to the foundation using self-tapping screws, plain screws,

mcr control systems pneumatic 9.

introduction Operation of smoke vents, as well as smoke vents with additional venting function, in spot execution or located in continuous rooflights, requires some activation devices for their opening and closing. These devices, or rather sets of devices, form a control system for smoke and heat exhaust or smoke and heat exhaust combined with daily ventilation. Depending on the type of devices used, a smoke exhaust control system may be executed as: • pneumatic system, • electrical system, • mechanical system, • pneumatic-electrical system (pneumatic part for smoke exhaust and electrical part controlling the ventilation). A control system for smoke exhaust and/or ventilation may be used in: • spot vents, • vents in arch-shaped continuous rooflights, • vents in triangular continuous rooflights, • vents in pyramid skylights, • vents in igloo skylights, • smoke exhaust windows. Smoke exhaust control systems are activated automatically by smoke detectors or by an increase of air temperature, and with a smoke vent they constitute an automatic smoke exhaust device. In accordance with the customer’s needs, apart from automatic activation, a control system may be equipped with devices permitting remote manual activation, as well as releasing from a fire alarm signalling system. In addition, integration with a fire alarm signalling system permits synchronised operation of the smoke exhaust system with the operation of sprinklers, smoke and fire curtains, fire partitions, operation of inlet ventilation, or with a system controlling the operation of aeration openings. A control system for smoke vents and ventilation hatches may be optionally equipped with adequate sensors and a weather monitoring unit, permitting the closing of vents opened beforehand for ventilation, in the case of rain or strong wind. The purpose of using automatic smoke exhaust devices is to remove smoke and fire gases from enclosed spaces (production floors, storage spaces, public facilities, etc.) to the outside of buildings, and to lower the temperature. These devices contribute to the protection of human lives and property by: • maintaining escape routes with low smoke levels, permitting evacuation, • facilitating the fire-fighting action by easier location of the place of fire, • reducing the risk of destruction of the building structure by lowering the temperature, • reducing the rate at which any fire spreads, • reducing the risk to human lives and limiting the fire damage caused by smoke, hot combustion gases and thermal decomposition products.

control system for smoke exhaust and/or daily ventilation – equipment

elements of a pneumatic control system – flow controllers flow controllers with thermal fuse Flow controller with thermal fuse, called also thermal release valve or thermal tripper, is used for feeding a pneumatic smoke exhaust actuator from its own CO2 cartridge or from a CO2 installation. The release of gas from the CO2 cartridge installed in the thermal valve occurs automatically after exceeding the nominal temperature of the thermal fuse – an alcohol ampoule – its breaking causes the release of the needle and punching the CO2 cartridge protection.

TAVE • function: local and remote opening of a vent in order to exhaust smoke (opening only), • thermal release valve accommodated for operation with an alarm box equipped only with manual emergency opening function, • may be used for single and triple pipe installations (see: Example executions of pneumatic control system), • 2 x 1/8” connectors, • integrated initial valve for deaeration of the system or for connecting other control devices (e.g. alarm box or ventilation box), • optionally, the possibility of remote releasing by electrical signal (CA-TEA-VVE) or pneumatic signal (CA-TPA-VVE), which permits cooperation with other control systems, e.g. a fire alarm signalling system.

The released gas is directed to the pneumatic smoke exhaust actuator, forcing the vent to lift: • variations: TAVE, TAVZ – pneumatic diagrams below, • disposable CO2 cartridge with threaded connection 1/2” UNF, • alcohol ampoules: for nominal temperatures of 68°C, 93°C, 110°C, 141°C, • maximum operating pressure: 8 MPa, • no tools are necessary to strain the needle and exchange the ampoule.

TAVZ • function: local and remote opening of a vent in order to exhaust smoke and closing of the vent (opening and the possibility of remote closing), • thermal release valve accommodated for operation with an alarm box equipped with both manual emergency opening and closing function, • may be used for double and four-pipe installations (see: Example executions of pneumatic control system), • 4 x 1/8” connectors, • integrated initial valve for deaeration of the system or for connecting other control devices (e.g. alarm box or ventilation box), • optionally, the possibility of remote releasing by electrical signal (CA-TEA-VVZ) or pneumatic signal (CA-TPA-VVZ), which permits cooperation with other control systems, e.g. a fire alarm signalling system.

control system for smoke exhaust with gas springs

description A variant of the pneumatic control system for smoke and heat exhaust is a system with smoke vents equipped with gas springs (oleopneumatic actuators). Actuation of smoke vents is effected by the energy of compressed gas in the gas springs. The vent is kept closed by a mechanical catch lock with thermal fuse. When the temperature rises above a certain level, the lock opens and the actuators expand, causing the opening of the vent. With adequate lock design (use of pneumatic micro-actuator), the system may be opened remotely by a pneumatic signal from an alarm box. Such a solution permits integration with central control panel for smoke exhaust and fire alarm signalling systems, when used with adequately configured alarm box. Key features of the system with gas springs: • lower price compared to other configurations, • this system cannot be used for ventilation, • after operation of the system, the vents are closed from the roof level. component elements • smoke vents MCR PROLIGHT equipped with gas springs and locks with pneumatic micro-actuators, • alarm box with CO2 cartridge. method of operation The system has the following methods of emergency activation: • automatic, controlled by the thermal fuse located inside the vent, • manual, from the alarm box, • automatic, by a signal from a fire control centre or fire alarm signalling system (alarm box with option HEA and control centre MCR9705 or MCR0204 is required).

control system for smoke exhaust and/or daily ventilation – control centre MCR 9705 v 2

control centre for smoke and heat exhaust MCR 9705 v 2 The control centre for smoke and heat exhaust MCR 9705 is used for actuation of devices of electrical smoke exhaust system of MERCOR on the basis of alarm signals from thermal or optical smoke detectors, manual smoke exhaust pushbuttons (RPO), or from another control centre (e.g. from a fire alarm signalling system, from a building automation system). The control centre is supplied with AC voltage 230 V~ and it supplies voltage 24 V= to the devices of the electrical smoke exhaust system. The controller is equipped with rechargeable batteries, therefore it is insensitive to supply voltage decay and it can operate for 72 hours after voltage failure. After that time a single actuation of the devices (e.g. opening of smoke vents) is possible. The control centre has the following features: • remote actuation of the smoke exhaust system devices by a signal from a fire signalling control unit (NC volt-free contact or 24 V= signal), • manual release by alarm pushbuttons, • automatic release by conventional (thermal or optical) smoke sensors, • indication of the control centre status by LEDs on the front panel and buzzer, • integration with manual smoke exhaust pushbutton RPO-1 and alarm pushbutton ROP, • transmitting information about emergency relese of the control centre (NC/NO contact and LED on pushbutton RPO-1), • transmitting information about voltage failure and defects (NC/NO contact and LED on pushbutton RPO-1), • transmitting information about opening of smoke vents (NC/NO contact), • monitoring of the stand-by status of all connected devices of the smoke exhaust system and presentation of possible defects on a panel inside the control centre, • manual opening of smoke vents for ventilation of the building during normal use (without activating the alarm status, separately for each group), • automatic closing of vents lifted for ventilation in the case of rain or strong wind, by a signal from a weather monitoring unit (has no effect on the emergency operation).

9.2.4.

Maximum number of electric actuators powered from the control centre depends on the actuator type (current consumption) and the size of central unit used – load capacity of current outputs, depending on the type, is from 1*5 A to 8*5 A. Maximum number of smoke detectors on 1 monitoring line, depending on the detector type, is from 8 to 10. Maximum number of alarm pushbuttons on 1 monitoring line is 10 for pushbuttons ROP without LEDs and 4 for pushbuttons RPO-1.The control centre MCR 9705 v 2 differs from the previous model in that it can be integrated with the pushbutton RPO-1 (it permits remote presentation of the control centre status and remote reset of the alarm), and the reduced number of lines (2) in the actuators circuit.Detailed information about the control centre for smoke exhaust MCR 9705 v 2 is contained in the technical and operational documentation delivered with the unit.

control system for smoke exhaust and/or daily ventilation – extension module MCR-R 04xx

technical data The extension module MCR-R 04xx is used for supplying power to 1 group of actuators 24 V= of total current consumption up to 48 A or 24 A, depending on execution. The module is controlled by a voltage signal 24 V= that may come from the control centre MCR 9705 or MCR 0204 (actuator line output). The device, in combination with a MCR central unit, ensures detection of defects of all connected actuator lines. The module is supplied with mains voltage 230 V~. The energy required for operation of actuators comes from a battery (24 V, 9 Ah), therefore the maximum time of continuous operation at the nominal load depends on module size e.g. for a consumption of 24 A it is 20 minutes. The battery charging time after complete discharge is approx. 10 hours.

The module MCR-R 04xx is equipped with signalling of the following states: • power supply 230 V~ correct green LED on • power supply 24 V= correct yellow LED on, • operation of actuators yellow LED on, • defect signal transmitted to the control centre in the case of defect of the actuator line or decay of power supply 24 V=. types • MCR-R 0424-2 2 output lines 12 A each, • MCR-R 0424-1 or MCR-R 0424K 1 output line 24 A, • MCR-R 0448-4 4 output lines 12 A each, • MCR-R 0448-2 2 output lines 24 A each, • MCR-R 0448-1 or MCR-R 0448K 1 output line 48 A. Typical variations are presented, “K” suffix = execution for curtains.

control system for smoke exhaust and/or daily ventilation – detectors

optical detectors Optical smoke detectors are used for detection of visible smoke that accompanies the outbreak of most fires. They permit the detection of fire in its early stages, while the material is still smouldering, which usually occurs long before the outbreak of open flame and noticeable increase of temperature. Detectors are characterised by resistance to wind, pressure variations, and steam condensation. They are highly sensitive to visible smoke. An optical detector consists of a set of two diodes. The first diode – an infrared LED – transmits a light beam. The second one, a receiver, is located in a labyrinth tunnel. In normal conditions, visible light from the outside or from the transmitter diode never reaches the receiver diode. When smoke penetrates the detector, the receiver diode starts to receive the light emitted by the transmitter diode and dispersed by the particles of smoke. This activates the detector and starts the alarm state. Detectors are equipped with visual indicators of operation (alarm) in the form of a LED, which facilitates finding an activated detector. In addition, if detectors are located in invisible places, they may be equipped with external operation indicators. Detectors are mounted in adequate sockets. Detectors are approved for use in fire protection systems.

control system for smoke exhaust and/or daily ventilation – detectors

heat detectors Heat detectors are used for the detection of fire hazards in rooms where a quick increase of temperature may be expected in the first stage of fire development, or in places where optical smoke detectors cannot be used. There are 2 basic types of heat detectors: fixed temperature type and differential type. Fixed temperature detectors react to the exceeding of a fixed threshold temperature. Temperature measurement is performed by an electronic thermo-sensitive element. Differential detectors are equipped with 2 thermo-sensitive elements (thermistors) – one of them is a reference thermistor and the other is located in a protruding part of the detector. In normal conditions the temperature of both thermistors is similar, and in the case of a quick increase of temperature the second thermistor heats up much faster than the reference one. This disturbs the system balance and activates the alarm state of the detector. Detectors are equipped with visual indicators of operation (alarm) in the form of a LED, which facilitates finding an activated detector. In addition, if detectors are located in invisible places, they may be equipped with external operation indicators. Detectors are mounted in adequate sockets. Detectors are approved for use in fire protection systems.

control system for smoke exhaust with gas springs

description A variant of the electrical control system for smoke exhaust is a system with smoke vents equipped with gas springs (oleopneumatic actuators). Actuation of smoke vents is effected by the energy of compressed gas in the gas spring. The vent is kept closed by a mechanical catch lock with thermal fuse. When the temperature rises above a certain level, the lock opens and the actuators expands, causing the opening of the hatch. With adequate lock design (use of electromagnet), the system may be opened remotely by an electrical signal (24 V–), which permits e.g. integration with central control panel for smoke exhaust and fire alarm signalling systems. Key features of the system with gas springs: • lower price compared to other configurations, • this system cannot be used for ventilation, • after operation of the system, the vents are closed from the roof level.

component elements The above smoke exhaust system consists of: • smoke vents MCR PROLIGHT equipped with gas springs, • electrical control centre of type MCR 9705 or MCR 0204 with battery, • optical smoke detectors (optionally),· ROP pushbuttons.

method of operation The system has the following methods of emergency activation: • automatic, controlled by the thermal fuse located inside the vent, • automatic, by a signal from a fire control centre (after connecting), • manual, using smoke exhaust pushbuttons.

control system for smoke exhaust – windlass

windlass – individual opening and closing with possibility of ventilation system properties • safe opening and reliable operation: locking is effected using the windlass with the self-locking system, located at the operator level, • closing again:a/ without any intervention on the roof,b/ provided by the windlass with automatic resetting, • ventilation: possible thanks to partial opening controlled from below using the crank, • smoke exhaust: constantly possible, even in the initial position of the vent opened for ventilation, • checking: correct operation of the outlet may be checked at any time, • maximum cord length – 15 m, • maximum number of pulleys – 4.

9.3.4.

principle of operation Mechanical control is a commonly used actuation system for smoke vents. When the release lever is pulled, a steel cord wound on a drum in a windlass is automatically released. The smoke vent will open fully, regardless of its initial position. Closing the vent again is effected using a crank, which is standard equipment for the mechanism. When necessary, the vent may be opened and

closed in order to ventilate the building. This is provided for by a crank mechanism with a high gear ratio with a self-locking system, permitting the opening of dome to desired position

window-based smoke exhaust system – smoke and heat exhaust components of window-based smoke exhaust system OSO-MCR • windows of adequate construction and louvered vents (under preparation); • control devices: electrical control centre for smoke exhaust MCR 9705 or MCR 0204, pneumatic alarm boxes, pneumatic ventilation boxes. • releasing elements: smoke detectors, thermal detectors in electrical systems, thermal release valves in pneumatic systems, thermal fuses in catch locks (system with gas springs), manual smoke exhaust control pushbuttons RPO-1 or ROP. • window actuators: electrical spindle actuators of type MCR W or chain actuators MCR L, pneumatic actuators of type Pxxx, gas springs; • actuator consoles; • catch locks for windows with gas springs.and additional equipment: • ventilation pushbuttons LT, • weather monitoring units (MCRP054 or WRS1b) with wind/ rain sensors.

window construction It is possible to use in the system the windows embedded in the building. The key feature of windows in the smoke exhaust system OSO-MCR is the efficiency of operation – opening and closing. Special attention should be given to accurate fitting of the casement to the window frame, not causing the jamming of these elements. Window types for use in the window-based smoke exhaust system OSO-MCR: • bottom or top hinged windows (to the outside or to the inside of the building), • hinged windows with vertical opening axis (to the outside or to the inside of the building), • hinged windows with horizontal opening axis located in half of the window height. Windows may be made of: • impregnated wood, • PVC of increased resistance to impacts and with internal steel sections, • aluminium protected against corrosion by anodising or painting. application The window-based smoke exhaust system OSO-MCR is designed for: • smoke and heat removal in the event of fire inside the building, using the windows mainly in staircases of public facilities, in passages and atria of shopping centres, • ventilation of rooms in normal use conditions, without tripping the alarm state, • aeration (providing sufficient inflow of fresh air) in buildings where an automatic aeration system is used apart from windows, see page 77.

determination of smoke exhaust and aeration surface area Obtaining a particular surface area of smoke exhaust in the system OSO-MCR is dependent on the window size and the actuator stroke. For windows with aerodynamic active area tests results available, these results should be used. If no tests results are available, the active area should be determined in accordance with the specified principles and the drawing (in accordance with EN12 101-2): 1. Determine the geometrical surface area of the opening P: P=H*B 2. A A = C V * P As the aeration surface area, use the geometrical surface area of the opening P (in accordance with PN-B-02877-4:2001).

window-based smoke exhaust system – air inlets

principle of operation OSO-MCR with electrical control The electrical system consists of: windows equipped with electric actuators, and the control centre MCR 9705 or MCR 0204 with detectors and manual smoke exhaust pushbuttons The system can be released as follows: • automatically, controlled by a smoke or thermal detector, • automatically, by a signal from a fire alarm signalling system through the control centre MCR 9705, • manually, using smoke exhaust pushbuttons. Closing of windows after their emergency opening (cancelling the alarm state) occurs after prior removal of the cause of alarm and after resetting the alarm with the “reset” pushbutton, and then by using the ventilation pushbutton or the “vent closing” pushbutton. Electrical control panels may be installed near a smoke exhaust window or in a building monitoring room. They are supplied with voltage 230 V~. The operating voltage (supply to actuators) is 24 V=. The control panels are equipped with batteries permitting system operation for 72 hours after a mains voltage outage, and after that time a single emergency opening of windows is possible. The controllers feature visual and audible (MCR 9705) signalling of the operational status, which permits easy identification of the source of alarm or location of a system defect. The system status signals are repeated on the pushbuttons RPO-1. The system may be equipped with additional devices, i.e. the ventilation pushbutton LT and the weather monitoring station with wind sensor WM 1 and rain sensor RS 1. The ventilation pushbutton LT is used for opening and closing of windows for ventilation during normal use of the system, without tripping the alarm state. The purpose of the wind/rain sensors WM 1/RS 1 is to automatically close the windows opened for ventilation in the case of unfavourable weather conditions. OSO-MCR with pneumatic control The pneumatic system consists of the following elements: windows equipped with pneumatic actuators with thermal valves, optionally with CO2 alarm box and pneumatic ventilation box.

76

The system can be released as follows: – automatic from the thermal trippers on the basis of temperature increase, – manual from the CO2 emergency box. Optionally, the system may be integrated with control centres for smoke exhaust MCR 9705 and MCR 0204 and accept signals from RPO-1/ROP, from a fire alarm signalling system, and from smoke detectors, after equipping the alarm boxes or thermal valves with electromagnets. The thermal release valves contain a thermal fuse and a CO2 cartridge, and they should be mounted in the space near the actuated window/windows. Alarm boxes contain a CO2 cartridge and a manually controlled valve.Closing of windows may be effected manually or from alarm boxes – depending on the configuration of the box and the pneumatic system.Equipping the system with a ventilation box permits the opening and closing of windows for ventilation. The ventilation box may be additionally equipped with electromagnet(s) in order to accommodate integration with an automatic weather system (see electrical system) and ventilation pushbuttons. OSO-MCR with gas springs The system with gas springs consists of the following elements: windows with catch locks and gas springs. The window is held closed by the catch lock. Release of the lock may occur after exceeding the operational temperature of the thermal fuse (fusible or alcohol type) built into the lock. After release of the lock, the window is opened as a result of the action of springs and it remains in this position. Closing of the window is effected manually. Catch locks, after equipping with pneumatic or electric microactuators, may be controlled from the CO2 emergency box or from the control centre for smoke exhaust MCR 9705/MCR 0204, respectively.

smoke curtain

smoke curtain - description A curtain wall is a vertical partition mounted on the inside to the roof or ceiling, preventing the spread of smoke and fire gases in a horizontal direction. One of the possible executions of a curtain wall is the automatic rolled smoke curtain MCR KURTYNA PROSMOKE. The use of an automatic rolled smoke curtain allows architects, apart from ensuring safety and satisfying the regulatory requirements, to shape the space as desired – this solution does not prevent the lighting of the building interior. Due to small overall dimensions and low weight, it requires no special structural solutions, and may be fitted easily into any room. application A smoke curtain, as one of the elements of a smoke and heat ventilation system, is used to separate a smoke container in the building, within smoke exhaust zones, by division of the space under the roof or ceiling into smaller parts. In combination with smoke vents MCR-Prolight and inlet openings, MCR KURTYNA PROSMOKE permits: • increasing the operating efficiency of vents by accumulation of smoke in smoke reservoirs within a zone, • maintaining escape routes free of smoke, • reducing the damage caused by smoke and hot gases, optimising smoke control. principle of operation of rolled smoke curtain MCR Kurtyna Prosmoke In the stand-by state, the curtain is fully rolled. When the alarm state is identified, the curtain controlled by the control panel MCR 9705 or MCR 0204 is fully unrolled until it reaches the designed curtain height. The unrolled curtain fabric prevents smoke and hot gases from penetrating to other smoke containers. The lowered fabric may be rolled using an electric motor. Operation of the curtain is controlled by the control panels MCR 9705 and MCR 0204 used for controlling smoke exhaust devices. Depending on the system configuration and the used devices, curtains may be actuated on the basis of a signal from smoke or heat detectors, from manual pushbuttons (ROP or RPO-1), or a signal received from a fire alarm signalling system.

construction of MCR Kurtyna Prosmoke MCR KURTYNA PROSMOKE may seal off openings of height max. 8 m, of width dependent on the number of used curtain modules. Smoke curtains consist of the following basic elements: • special non-combustible fabric MCR TK G1 or MCR TK G2 (silver-grey colour), • winding shaft with actuator enclosed in a casing of galvanised steel sheet, • lower ballast of the curtain made of galvanised steel sheet, • power supply module, • optional side guides, • control centre MCR 9705 or MCR 0204. The curtain dimensions, and in consequence the device size and the used actuators and control devices, are determined in each case on the basis of the customer’s requirements. The curtain is made of a special non-combustible fabric of dimensions adequately adjusted to the opening sealed off by the curtain. The fabric is wound on the shaft by an actuator enclosed in the casing. The casing is mounted to a lintel, roof, ceiling, or wall, using adequately selected fasteners. Correct unrolling of the fabric and correct positioning of the curtain in the alarm state are ensured by the linear ballast (bottom bar). In addition, the curtain position in the alarm state may be fixed by optional side guides mounted to walls or pillars. The curtain is rolled and unrolled using an electric actuator powered with safe voltage 24 V=.In the case of curtains of considerable length, the device is combination of several modules as described above. The curtain control system is supplied from mains 230 V~, and in the case of a mains supply failure it may operate in stand-by state for 72 hours, and then be actuated once. In addition, the control system provides monitoring of the supply lines of the curtain actuator.
