2024 Guide to Pride PALM SPRINGS

Page 1

PRIDE REPRESENTS RESILIENCE

Pride is far more than just a celebration or parade; it represents a deeply personal journey, a symbol of empowerment, and a collective stand for visibility and equality. For me, Pride is both a reflection of individual identity and of the broader struggles the LGBTQ+ community has faced over decades, and still continues to face today. It’s an opportunity to honor those who came before us, celebrate who we are, and look forward to a future where acceptance and love are universal.

Pride represents resilience. The history of LGBTQ+ rights, from the Stonewall riots to the AIDS crisis, and the continual fight for legal and social equality. Pride is a living testament to the people who fought, resisted, and persevered so that we could live more openly today. Every flag waved, every march walked, and every voice raised, is a reminder that despite oppression, WE ARE HERE, and WE ARE THRIVING!

Pride represents community. In a world that sometimes feels isolating, Pride is a celebration of belonging. It’s a chance to connect with others who share similar experiences, to feel less alone in our journeys, and to celebrate our unique identities within a vibrant and diverse spectrum. Whether it’s through friendships, family, or the larger LGBTQ+ community, Pride reinforces the idea that WE ARE ALL STRONGER TOGETHER.

Pride represents hope. Equality is still a work in progress, and the fight for justice and inclusion continues with a sincere hope for a better future. Through this continued work, we strive to end LGBTQ+ discrimination, violence, and inequality.

Pride represents love. Pride encourages us to embrace love, in all its forms, without apology. It’s about loving who we want, how we want, and celebrating that love. Pride encourages me to live fully and to love fully, and that, to me, is the greatest gift of all.

GED Magazine has always been about community, and we bring you this GUIDE TO PRIDE, PALM SPRINGS as a celebration of our community - in all its colors, its complexities, and its infinite possibilities. Please enjoy this resource during Pride Weekend and remember to live boldly, authentically, and unapologetically. Celebrate not just yourself, but everyone who is brave enough to live as they truly are.

VINCENT

STEVEN HENKE ETHLYINA CANNE

conic designer and ceramicist, Jonathan Adler grew up in New Jersey and found his love for ceramics at age 12, when he first used a potter’s wheel at summer-camp. After years in various career fields, Adler launched his namesake brand after leaving his day job to pursue his first love: pottery. In 1993, Barneys bought his collection of pots, and five years later, he opened his first store in Soho.

Later, Adler took an interior design job that put a stamp on Palm Springsthe Parker Hotel. Today, Jonathan Adler is a design company with retail locations worldwide, a thriving e-commerce site (jonathanadler.com), a full slate of residential and commercial projects, and a global wholesale business. Jonathan strives to create luxe and livable interiors that are seriously designed, but don’t take themselves too seriously.

I’m beyond excited to have the chance to speak with you! Your designs work so well here in Palm Springs. All of us locals, and visitors who have stayed there, associate you with the gorgeous Parker Hotel. Your name is a staple here because of your design work on the Parker. How did that come about?

Back in the day the owners of the Parker Palm Springs used to shop in my first store in New York City. They bought the property and gave us a ring to talk about designing it. And guess what? When the Parker calls, you pick up the phone!

I JONATHAN ADLER FOR THE LOVE OF GLAMOUR

Did you have a chance to spend much time in Palm Springs before the Parker?

I designed the Parker for the first time in 2004, and prior to that hadn’t been to Palm Springs. Twenty years and a few redesigns later, I like to consider myself an old Palm Springs pro - or at least old.

How has your experience in Palm Springs influenced your work?

Palm Springs is a singular place. I love the history, from its roots as Hollywood’s hedonistic hideaway, to the iconic architecture. Its groovy, modern vibe is present in so much of my work, I even launched a Palm Springs Collection of pottery in homage.

Palm Springs Pride is coming up the first weekend of November. Has the incredible LGBTQIA+ community here helped shape your opinion of Palm Springs?

I’ve been out, proud, and loud for eons, so the LGBTQIA+ community makes a trip to Palm Springs feel like returning home, in a sense. It’s a reminder of how lucky I am to live in a country and a time in which being gay is okay and a stark comparison to many places in the world that are not quite so welcoming.

Well, my balcony is over Palm Canyon and the pride parade passes right under me, so you’re welcome to come watch the parade! Have you gotten a chance to visit much since the pandemic?

I’m always dropping in to get inspiration and refresh any aspects of the hotel that I feel could use it. Like any good Californian, the Parker Palm Springs is no stranger to the occasional nip and tuck.

In my store I sell merchandise with my own pop art, other local artists, and decor from brands I love, such as Jonathan Adler. One thing customers always ask me, and I’m curious, have you ever owned a home in Palm Springs? I’ve heard people say yes, and no!

I’ve never owned a home in Palm Springs and the truth is I don’t think I ever will thanks to the Parker - I wanted it to feel like you were arriving at the estate of your favorite glamorous, global, great aunt who you wish you had but never did. What could be better than that?

I see the Auntie Mame reference you just made there! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about Palm Springs! You can check out all of Jonathan Adler’s designs at JonathanAdler.com, and of course, in my store, Trevor Wayne, located at 901 N Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs or TrevorWayne.com.

Marking 40 years of advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community, the nonprofit outlines seven celebratory October and November events to coincide with the city’s Greater Palm Springs Pride celebration.

In heartfelt tribute to its 40-year legacy of advocacy, DAP Health is proud to announce its “30 Days of Pride” commemoration. The nonprofit will either host or participate in a series of eight related events throughout October and November, each of which will mark DAP Health’s unwavering commitment to every member of the LGBTQ+ community.

October 2: The Pride Honors Awards at the Hilton Palm Springs

Kicking off the series, DAP Health will be honored with the Spirit of Stonewall Advocate of the Year Award at Greater Palm Springs Pride’s Pride Honors Awards at the Hilton Palm Springs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This award recognizes DAP Health’s decades-long dedication to providing expert health care and social services to members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Coachella Valley and beyond. Speaking to the impact of this year’s honorees, Greater Palm Springs Pride President and CEO Ron deHarte says, “Their work inspires us all to strive for a future where everyone can live authentically and without fear.”

October 11: National Coming Out Day at Revivals Palm Springs

To mark National Coming Out Day, Revivals Palm Springs will host its all-day Gender-Affirming Sales Event, during which the entire store will replace gender-specific rack signs with ones that say, “Fashion Has No Gender.” Revivals will also offer 50% off all pre-loved apparel. Stressing the importance of this event, DAP Health Chief of Brand Marketing Steven Henke says, “Coming out is a lifelong process as we get to know and express our authentic selves. We want to celebrate that journey of self-discovery by inviting the entire community to shop for fashion without the limits of labels.”

October 18: Revivals After Dark Back Alley Event at Revivals Palm Springs

Revivals Palm Springs will host its biannual Revivals After Dark Back Alley Event from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., raising funds to support both health equity and the Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert. Since its inception in 2022, the insanely popular outdoor affair has raised more than $130,000 on behalf of LGBTQ+ health care services, and to foster community connection. This year, more than $25,000 is projected to be raised through the sale of leather gear, underwear, and other clothing, plus adult-themed art, books, magazines, novelties, and collectibles.

October 22: Vista Sunrise II Ribbon-Cutting

At 10:00 a.m., DAP Health will proudly commemorate the official opening of Vista Sunrise II, its latest onsite affordable housing complex, developed in tandem with the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition. The structure on DAP Health’s Sunrise campus in Palm Springs features a total of 61 units, with 30 dedicated to rapid rehousing, 30 for individuals with chronic illnesses and/or low incomes, and one for an onsite case manager. The ribboncutting will be in partnership with major donor Desert Care Network, which donated a gift of $2.5 million toward DAP Health’s Vision Forward Capital Campaign.

October 26: DAP Health Equity Walk

Presented by Desert Care Network, the 35th Annual DAP Health Equity Walk (founded in 1989 as the Desert AIDS Walk) will kick off from Ruth Hardy Park at 8:45 a.m. Celebrating its 40th anniversary of protecting and expanding health care access, DAP Health looks forward to another successful and impactful fundraising event, whose slogan for 2024 is “Because Health Care is a Human Right.” “All of us at DAP Health are so proud that we can put the invaluable lessons we have learned over the last four decades to use in improving the lives of members of the rainbow of communities that exist throughout Southern California,” says longtime DAP Health CEO David Brinkman. “Every dollar

raised by our generous participants and their supporters will go to fund health equity for all people.”

October 26: Equality California’s Palm Springs Equality Awards

Later that day, DAP Health will receive the Community Leadership Award at Equality California’s 2024 Palm Springs Equality Awards. Since 1984, DAP Health has remained committed to protecting and expanding health care access for the LGBTQ+ community. Today, guided by the voices and needs of every one of the diverse communities it serves, the nonprofit provides medical and social services to people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, orientations, and socioeconomic statuses at 25 fixed locations and eight mobile units from the Coachella Valley to the San Diego coast. This marks Equality California’s 25th annual event, whose theme is “Our Journey for Equality.”

November 2 – 4: Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival & Parade

DAP Health’s Community Health team will participate in the 38th Annual Greater Palm Springs Pride, providing health information, free STI testing, and vaccinations. “Participating in Greater Palm Springs Pride is always a personal highlight of the fall season, not just for me, but for everyone who calls DAP Health home in one fashion or another,” says CEO Brinkman. “At DAP Health, we have always fought for the LGBTQ+ community, championing health care access for more than four decades. Our recent expansion hasn’t weakened our commitment; it’s fortified our resolve.”

As a recipient of the Spirit of Stonewall Advocate of the Year Award, DAP Health’s employees will walk alongside the car in which Brinkman — who celebrated 18 years of service to the organization on August 2 — will ride during the Pride Parade at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 3. Landmark achievements under the CEO’s leadership include onsite affordable housing complex Vista Sunrise (for people living with HIV) on the Sunrise campus, the first adult HIV specialty dental clinic in Riverside County, an official visit to the

White House to celebrate the pioneering Get Tested Coachella Valley initiative, a sexual wellness clinic in Indio (eradicating barriers to accessing free STI testing and treatment in the eastern Coachella Valley), the absorption of the Borrego Health system and its 24 locations and 70,000 patients, and the recent unveiling of second onsite affordable housing complex Vista Sunrise II, also on the Sunrise campus.

November 7: Partners For Life Season Open Party

Rounding out “30 Days of Pride,” DAP Health will host its major donor Partners For Life Season Open Party from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the legendary Bob Hope House. Fans of architecture refer to it as a John Lautner house, in reference to the celebrated Los Angeles architect who designed it, but locally, it’s known as the Bob Hope House, a circular, 24,000-square-foot residence built 40-plus years ago for the entertainer and his family. Many observers have said the structure, with its sweeping, gravitydefying roof and 60-foot-wide oculus, looks like a spaceship parked on a rugged hill. When Hope first saw Lautner’s architectural model, he quipped, “Well, at least when they come down from Mars, they’ll know where to go.”

About DAP Health

Founded in 1984 at the dawn of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, DAP Health has been a pillar of support for the LGBTQ+ community in Palm Springs and beyond. With a focus on cultural competence and patient-centered, whole-person care, the nonprofit has expanded its reach across Southern California, offering a wide range of programs and services from the Coachella Valley to the San Diego coast. DAP Health remains committed to honoring its past while forging a future of health equity for all.

EXPLORING THE GAY RESORTS OF PALM SPRINGS

Humans are hoarders by nature. Ever since we could walk erect (more about that later), we have consumed ourselves with hunting, gathering, and collecting.

At work, we pile on responsibilities and job titles. Socially, we amass as many friends as we can. Stylistically, we feel compelled to shop the latest trends and trinkets, layering them upon ourselves and blotting out the world, like donning a suit of armor in an increasingly materialistic marathon of excess.

No wonder we have so much baggage.

That’s why it’s immensely liberating to strip everything away; to disconnect, to clean house, to “spark joy” and to commune with the basic elements of mind, soul and bodyody-ody. In other words: who needs swim wear? You’re on vacay, baby!

Palm Springs is a veritable naked nirvana. This otherwise humble hamlet is the undisputed Mecca of gay hospitality. So, pack your bags (lightly) and unpack paradise. Follow our lead…

Descanso

288 E Camino Monte Vista, Palm Springs www.descansoresort.com

Descanso, a newly refurbished, completely reimagined men’s resort in Palm Springs, has a casual yet modern take on the legendary Hollywood style of yesteryear, updated for the savvy traveler of today. Here, the lush garden blooms, the pool water sparkles, and more than one guest has been known to extend his stay. “The ambience says, “California garden patio.” Your inner voice will say “What took you so long?”

With a complimentary breakfast and poolside lunch, you ay not want to leave. But if you do, it is walking distance to all that Uptown Palm Springs offers. Descanso is a seamless blend of indoor/outdoor living, casual refinement, and a welcoming Hollywood Moderne vibe, bringing a fresh perspective to your next desert getaway. You can almost hear Cary calling you back to the pool.

Twin Palms

1930 S Camino Real, Palm Springs www.twinpalmsresort.com

Tucked away in one of Palm Springs’ most celebrated modernist neighborhoods, the historic Twin Palms Resort has been given new life as a quintessential getaway destination for discerning gay men.

This completely reimagined desert retreat beautifully balances the striking natural environment surrounding the property with the iconic architecture this Palm Springs neighborhood is famous for. Even the shape of the resort’s centerpiece, a stunning new swimming pool, mirrors the rooflines of the mid-century modern homes nearby. And of course, swimsuits are always optional.

Imagine yourself here, the sun kissing your skin, the warm spa water easing your aches away, the San Jacinto mountains guarding your private sanctuary and sending you directly into relax mode. This is a one-of-a-kind destination, both relaxing and unforgettable. There is a chaise lounge under a big, yellow umbrella calling your name!

Santiago

650 San Lorenzo Road, Palm Springs www.santiagoresort.com

Home of the largest pool in the gay Palm Springs resort realm. Splash your worries away at Santiago, a wonderland of outdoor splendor. In addition to the aforementioned mega-pool, the grounds include a saline hot tub, gregarious gathering spaces warmed by a fire pit, and even a garden-side shower.

“Hang out” in the two-person hammock until your desires require more privacy, at which point you can retire to the boudoir. Each suite has a signature appeal, effortlessly blending a European color palette with midcentury modern angles. Honestly, why bother wearing clothes when you’ll only be upstaged by the dashing décor of your surroundings?

Santiago has a hearty legacy; the building has stood strong for over 80 years, and it has been proudly gay since 1995. Previously known as the Matador, this property is a beacon of beefy beauty – no bull!

Nestled enticingly along the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains, the resort offers bicycles to its guests so they can explore the grandeur of the gayborhood.

Triangle Inn

555 San Lorenzo Road, Palm Springs www.triangle-inn.com

Triangle Inn is a visual smorgasbord that fulfills all your voyeuristic cravings. Designed back in 1958 by the visionary architect Hugh Kaptur, this property was originally known as the Impala Lodge. Its geometric windows swoop dramatically upward, clashing and cavorting whimsically with the steel girders that lend a masculine spine to the structure.

Fast forward to the queer and now. The triangular edifice of this hospitable hotel has not only lent itself to the resort’s nomenclature, but the shape also evokes a defiance that is central to our culture. Pink triangle iconography reminds us of how much we have overcome and why we should – nay, must – revel in our homo hedonism at full velocity!

Simmer in a poolside playground or heat things up with a dozen of your new best friends, Jacuzzi style. As you lose yourself (and your inhibitions) in the frisky garden surroundings, you’ll find it hard to believe that you’re just one block away from the main drag in downtown Palm Springs.

INNdulge

601 S. Grenfall Road, Palm Springs www.inndulge.com

And speaking of indulgence, welcome to its namesake: INNdulge. This Warm Sands institution is constantly renovating and reimagining its deluxe accommodations to ensure maximum satisfaction to their lucky guests.

Some resorts throw around the word “cabana,” but INNdulge takes the concept to a whole new level of luxury. Each pastel blue gazebo features its own ceiling fan and misting system. Pull the drapes for private time or throw them wide open to embrace your inner exhibitionist.

Handsome, friendly Casanovas descend on the lanai every morning for breakfast and every evening for happy hour. Strike up a conversation and let down your guard, because you have officially arrived at the capital of inclusion.

Vista Grande

574 S. Warm Sands Drive, Palm Springs www.vistagranderesort.com

Variety is the spice of life, so multiply your pleasure at Vista Grande, the original gay-clothing-optional resort in the desert. This decadent destination is actually three estates in one, but you can stroll the grounds at will. On your nature walk, you’ll find two full-sized pools and plenty of full-size fun. And what most don’t know, right across Warm Sands Drive, you will find the fourth estate – Atrium, with its five rooms, fountains and separate pool. You can even buy-out the Atrium property for you and your friends and create your own party.

The steam room, for example, is a who’s who of ooh, yaas! Sweaty studs gather regularly in this sprawling spa, dropping their towels alongside their inhibitions. The shower in the center of the steam room provides a necessary blast of soothing chill. Emerging from the steam, you can gaze down at the waterfall flanking the eastern ridge of the property. The 10 (or more) man hot tub offers a front-row seat to the cascading majesty of the trickling H2O.

AN OASIS FOR ALL

Being embraced just as you are is what makes our community so special, and that’s worth celebrating today and every day.

Wishing everyone a joyful and happy Pride!

he rhythm of rebellion.

TThe allure of acceptance. The pulse of a party that ripples through the sultry autumn air of our greater gay paradise and beckons you to celebrate Pride in Palm Springs.

It is a thrilling soiree that welcomes queer revelers from around the globe. Inhibitions have no place here, as a rugged ridge of mountains embrace the festivities and guard us from the harsh realities of the world outside our oasis, if only for a fleeting, fabulous moment.

But safe spaces are never guaranteed. We must defend them, we must celebrate them, and we must understand the deeper meaning of Pride. It is an extension of the 1969 Stonewall uprising that demanded LGBTQ+ rights then, now, and forever; an initiative that is especially vital and vulnerable in today’s turbulent sociopolitical climate.

To add perspective to our eternal quest for equality, we look to local luminaries for inspiration. The exclusive interviews below reflect a spectrum of activism and artistry. After all, the queer community is comprised of drag queens, warriors, and policy makers… sometimes all within the same soul. So, let’s get to know the individuals who elevate Pride from an abstract idea to an urgent anthem.

DAVID REESE

News Director, NBC Palm Springs

“For me, Pride is self-realization. It’s the freedom to celebrate who I am… without fear of what anyone else thinks. Coming out of the closet was one thing, but truly learning to love myself took years. It’s easy to internalize the negative things directed at the gay community, even though we live in one of the most inclusive places in America. But when you finally get to a place where you can say, ‘If you have a problem with my sexuality, it’s your problem, not mine’ and really mean it, you’re living your pride. So, for me, that’s the true meaning of Pride.”

As the news director at NBC Palm Springs, Reese strives to capture the full spectrum of the queer experience.

“I really work hard to ensure that NBC Palm Springs is inclusive yearround. That’s not an agenda; it’s a recognition of this community and what’s been happening around here for years that was generally overlooked by mainstream media. For Pride, we’ll cover as many different community events as we can. And one of the directives I always give the news staff is to make sure our coverage is reflective of the diversity within the LGBTQ community. TV News can tend to gravitate to the extremes… showing the almost naked guys dancing on a truck or Dykes on Bikes. And while they’re part of our community, they’re not representative of everyone. If we’re going to show those images, I also insist we show same-sex couples with their children and PFLAG and other members of the community, so our coverage is truly representative… and not gratuitous or sensational.”

His messaging is simultaneously refined and rebellious.

“Now more than ever, we must stand up and be seen,” announces Reese. “Just look at the trans community. I’ve heard comments like

‘That’s new, they weren’t around when I was young.’ Uh, yes, they were. They were just forced to hide in the shadows so you didn’t see them. Now they’re organized and mobilized, and we need to stand with them. They’re taking a huge amount of heat and when any of us are threatened, we’re all threatened. This is not a time to take our civil rights for granted; there are organized efforts across the country to take them away. Our neighbors and friends need to know us and understand our fight so they can support us. Staying silent is not an option.”

Living out loud is David Reese’s lens, and his POV is a kaleidoscope of dazzling diversity.

“Pride has so much to offer that everyone can find their thing and their tribe,” Reese summarizes. “Who doesn’t love making new friends in unexpected places? However you ultimately decide to celebrate Pride, I hope it’s more than just a party. I hope it makes you feel connected to the larger community. Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what we’re all looking for? To be included.”

AARON ALLEN MARNER

2024 Pride Parade Grand Marshal

“Gay Pride means a lot to me,” declares Aaron Allen Marner. “It’s something that I carry with me every day.”

Marner creates evocative, urgent, euphoric visuals that have earned him a place in the pantheon of Palm Springs artists. “My work has been built on incorporating different styles, experimenting and trying new things or ideas to keep consistently making things that look fresh and new. I am inspired by other artists, architecture, nature, fashion, pattern work and people. I am always looking for new concepts in order to retool my craft.”

The resulting aesthetic is a cacophony of juxtapositions. Marner’s pieces are on full, fierce display at Peepa’s and V Wine Lounge in the heart of town, not to mention his own website, arronallenart.org. Truly, Marner captures the human condition in all of its fractured fortitude and connects the viewer to his empowered societal sensibility.

“Community is about people of all aspects of life being able to coexist with one another. Supporting one another. I think the biggest thing that resonates with me when I think about the word community is having a sense of belonging. A lot of the times being gay you do not feel that all the time. Feeling like an outsider, not only as gay people but people in general when you are typecast as a minority, ‘other,’ or looked at as differently because you do not fit what society has deemed as ‘normal.’ I think the community should be ever changing and adaptable to the nuances of what is considered to be normal, and inclusion should always be held in the highest regard. As a community, we must make everyone feel welcomed.”

It is this very zeal for inclusivity that has earned Marner the coveted role as 2024 Pride Parade Grand Marshal, and he is an enthusiastic ambassador for the core values of the celebration. “The theme of Be You speaks

to me heavily. I think as a gay man I am inherently different from others, but that is what makes me so unique and makes the community so unique - having a plethora of representation throughout it. I always encourage people to be themselves and consider myself as a man who can sit, talk to, and hang out with anyone. I’ve always had an ability to connect with anyone, no matter their walk of life.”

Marner’s skill for outreach ironically stems from his adolescent experiences of marginalization and masculine exploration.

“Being a man who came out at 16, I feel like being gay has always been a part of my life. Being a man who played sports, who did not see a lot of

examples of other gay men who were like me until later in life, I felt like an ‘other.’ Going to Pride allowed me to meet other individuals of all walks of life and gave me a sense of belonging.”

Thus began the artist’s romance with representation, a mission that has traced the path from his formative years in Phoenix to the heights of Palm Springs passion.

“The message for me is always Love,” concludes Marner. “Love of self. Love of others. I think the theme of Be You speaks for itself, and I hope that people feel inspired to show up and do just that. Enjoy life, the skin they are in, express themselves wholeheartedly and have an amazing time!”

BRIAN O’CONNOR

Steering Committee Chair, HRC Palm Springs

“I’m honored to serve on the National Board of Governors for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and serve as the steering committee chairperson for HRC Palm Springs.”

Empathy surges within O’Connor as he continues, “I have benefitted in many areas of my life from the first four decades of work by HRC for our community and today I feel a calling, a strong sense of duty, even an obligation to continue supporting the work especially since we are witness to such bold discriminatory actions towards our Transgender community members.”

We must combat ignorance with defiance, and the bravest gesture is simply stepping up and standing out.

“When WE SHOW UP, equality wins!” beams O’Connor. “HRC shows up at more than 250 Pride Festivals nationally, including Palm Springs. This is often the first-time a younger (or new) community member will see and be introduced to the organization and learn about the importance of our work in the name of equality; electing fair minded politicians who serve as our allies to pass the Equality Act and our focus to defeat all discriminatory legislation at the national, state and local levels of government.”

Taking a page from the Beastie Boys, O’Connor is urging us to fight for our respective right to proverbially party - on November 2nd, to be precise.

“The HRC Palm Springs Garden Party is the preeminent fundraiser for the Human Rights Campaign in the Coachella Valley which brings together more than 500 HRC members, advocates, allies and supporters - in the name of equality. Supporters and their guests ‘show-up’ in festive and colorful garden party attire to enjoy an afternoon of community, connection and inspired action. Produced by an all-volunteer planning committee, the Garden Party is the biggest fundraiser in the region for HRC Palm Springs

and features a robust silent auction where guests are encouraged to bid high for equality. In 2023, the HRC Palm Springs Garden Party was recognized by HRC Headquarters in Washington, DC as the Signature Event of the Year and Community Event of the Year.”

Philanthropy flourishes in the desert, and every blossom brings us closer to realizing our collective core values.

“Pride means living openly and authentically while embracing our unique style and self-expression,” concludes O’Connor. “As human beings, we have so much in common, and yet it is our diversity and individuality that makes life and the world around us interesting. It’s the spark for creativity, ingenuity, innovation, and evolution.”

SABRYNA WILLIAMS

(aka Anthony Mauricio Moñtano) Drag Ambassador

“Pride to me means being able to express openly and happily who you are,” exclaims emcee extraordinaire Sabryna Williams. “Thanks to the people who paved the way for us, we are able to be free about who we are regardless of identifiers and come together as a diverse community of amazing individuals!”

Haters, take a hike - Williams has no time for your nonsense.

“Events like Pride are important to show the world that no matter what our opposers may think of us, we love who we are, and we aren’t going away! It’s important that we stand together as a community and stand up for ourselves, both socially and politically! Election Day is not far from Pride this year, and this will be a time to ‘drag out’ the votes and make our voices heard! I will always advocate for our community to vote, vote, VOTE!!!”

We approve this message. And we double approve of every damn appearance Williams makes. You can usually find her hosting Sunday Tea N’ Shade at Boozehounds (www.boozehoundsps.com) for a raucous Sunday afternoon lunch show with The Lunchettes: Aria Skys Williams, Athena Kills, and weekly surprise guests. She is also a regular performer at Chill Bar, Toucan’s, and One Eleven.

“I’ll be hosting Not Your Grandma’s Bingo: Pride Edition at Chill Bar downtown Palm Springs with amazing giveaways on Saturday of pride weekend! Friday night and Saturday night I will be hosting and performing at Boozehounds Palm Springs for our amazing dog friendly and outstanding Pride events!”

So, get ready for some ruff love, y’all. This drag queen from New Mexico is a fiery Latina and has come to slay.

“Always remember that Pride is about loving yourself and allowing yourself to mingle with people from

all different walks of life. Take this year and remind yourselves where we came from and, with the election coming up, where you want YOUR future to go! We are masters of our own destiny and thanks to events like Pride we can show the world that our future is bright!”

TIM VINCENT

President, Brothers of the Desert Tim Vincent lives on the forefront of progress. “I have dedicated 30+ years in my professional life to advocating for health equity in marginalized communities,” narrates Vincent. “We need to understand some of the unique challenges we face and recognize our strengths and resilience as individuals and as a community to truly address our health needs.”

Compassion is his strength and community is his calling.

“I am the board president of Brothers of the Desert (www.brothersofthedesert.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Black gay men in the Coachella Valley and beyond.” Vincent continues, “Our purpose is to change the dynamics that produce isolation and disconnection among Black gay men. All our programs and social events emanate from our mission, and everyone is welcome to attend.”

The gregarious gatherings have quickly defined the group as a cornerstone of Pride in Palm Springs.

“Since our inception as a non-profit organization five years ago, we have participated emphatically in the Pride celebration each year, marching and letting people know who we are and how much we support our larger community. Last year, Brothers of the Desert was named Organization of the Year, which meant a lot to us. We got to ride atop a convertible (bucket list), wave to the crowds, and receive so much love and support. It was an incredible experience. We will be marching and celebrating in the parade again this year.”

Attendees will recognize Vincent by his warm smile, and he’s also bringing his formidable philosophy to the proceedings.

“Pride is about celebrating one’s confidence and self-respect in living your truth and being your authentic self. It is essential to the social, spiri-

tual, physical, and emotional well-being of our community. For members of the LGBTQ+ community, this can be a challenge to attain and for those who identify as Black and LGBTQ+, the access to feeling a sense of pride can be even more difficult.”

But breaking barriers is Vincent’s superpower, and he’s sharing it with the world, along with the following advice to guests of Pride in 2024: “Be open and grateful to giving and receiving unconditional love and support from people to boost your sense of pride. It is a powerful feeling. Have fun and meet new people!”

On November 9th, Brothers of the Desert will present Real Talk: Real Health, a Wellness Summit preview event with Dr. Leo Moore. The event will be held at the Mizell Center from 9am to 12pm and guests can register at www.brothersofthedesert.com.

Affliction festers in the shadows. When we are alienated, we don’t receive the healing help we need because we’re almost invisible to the medical elite. That’s why the most powerful words that a healthcare provider can say are: The doctor will see you now.

Steven Henke understands how essential it is to be seen. As Chief of Brand Marketing at DAP Health, he is a maestro of messaging and a wellspring of compassion. “We want everyone, regardless of their background, to have access to the care and support they need to live a healthy and authentic life. We believe that healthcare is a human right, and our work is guided by the voices and needs of the diverse communities we serve. Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that by addressing the social drivers of health, we can create a more just and equitable society for all.”

Inclusion is the best medicine, and Henke has a prescription for Pride. “From providing expert health care services to fostering community connections, our work is driven by the belief that everyone deserves to live their healthiest life. The values of Pride fuel our commitment to health equity and social justice, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of our community have access to the resources they need to thrive.”

When access is no longer an obstacle, the healing begins, and happiness is just around the corner. These are the principles of Pride.

“Pride is a powerful celebration of authenticity, community, and resilience,” Henke explains. “Pride means being unapologetically true to oneself and embracing the diversity that makes our community so vibrant. It’s also a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality.”

This isn’t just pleasant rhetoric; he’s bringing his caring crew to Palm Canyon, the heart of the festivities. “Our Community Health team will be at the Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival,

providing health information, free STI testing, and vaccinations. We encourage anyone in need of support to visit our website at daphealth.org, where they can find more information and access the services they need.”

But Henke’s calendar of care extends well beyond the weekend. “This year, DAP Health is celebrating our 30 Days of Pride commemoration, which includes a series of seven events throughout October and November. We’re kicking off with the Pride Honors Awards, where we’ll be recognized as the Spirit of Stonewall Advocate of the Year and continuing with events like National Coming Out Day at Revivals, the Revivals After Dark Back Alley Event, and the DAP Health Equity Walk. Personally, I’m looking forward to participating in the Pride Parade on November 3rd, where our team will walk together to show our solidarity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Togetherness is a team sport, and Henke is eager to coach us all to victory.

“As we gear up for Greater Palm Springs Pride, I want to remind everyone that Pride is not just a celebration—it’s a statement. When we come together, we’re showing the world that we stand strong, united, and proud of who we are. Every year, when I walk in the Pride Parade, I make a point to make eye contact with as many people along the route as possible. I do this because I know there’s at least one person visiting from a small town where it isn’t safe to be LGBTQ, and they might be experiencing their first Pride. I want to make sure they go home knowing they have a community here and that they are never alone.”

Acknowledgement is a crucial component of healthcare. Henke is excited to meet as many of you as possible because the more, the healthier.

“Join DAP Health at the parade, the festival, and at our events. Let’s make this Pride one to remember— because Pride matters, and because YOU matter.”

ETHLYINA CANNE

“Pride to me is so much MORE than partying and parades. It is a time to celebrate the diversity of others and myself. In the world we live in today, every walk of life, every gender, every color of skin, EVERYBODY attends Pride festivals and thank goodness they do. Pride is a time for me to come together with others and celebrate being free to just be. It is a time for JOY, which for those who know me, know that I’m always up for those moments.”

And her triumphant track record proves it.

“I had the absolute honor of being last year’s ‘Community Grand Marshal’ in the parade and had a very robust performance and appearance schedule. This year will be toned down a bit, but Saturday you can catch me at the local Kiehl’s store in downtown Palm Springs. This in-store event will take place between 1pm and 3pm. I use Kiehl’s skin care religiously and love all the products. At 51 years young I need to take care of my skin more than ever. I mean, this face has got to stay right and tight for at least 10 more years, as I’m nowhere near ready to hang up these heels. We will be doing in-store skin assessments, helping customers with targeting areas of their skin they are concerned about, as well as having some fabulous raffle prizes and sample items to try out.”

Fleshing out more of her fab agenda, Canne continues, “On Sunday, I will once again be in the Pride Parade, where we will be debuting the new company ‘Drag & Fly Sightseeing Tours’ (www.dragandflytours. com). This experience will be the first of its kind, combining the rich history of the Coachella Valley, a tour aboard a customized one of a kind ‘Mobile Theatre’ hosted by your drag queen tour guide ‘Miss B. Guided!’ This tour of our desert oasis will launch on Friday, November 8th, departing from the brand new much anticipated Thompson Hotel on Palm Canyon. It is going to be something so fun and fresh, with a detailed history starting with the Cahuilla Native American people leading up to present day. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the lucky 13 guests aboard each intimate trip will exit the theater with a new mindset (we hope) and some interesting history they were unaware of. Locals and tourists alike will be waiting to board, so be sure and add yourself to the waitlist for special updates pre-launch.”

Like a lingual ballerina, Canne pivots our convo from the heights of exploration to the depths of the discrimination we now face.

“Well unless you live under a rock, you are aware of the mission to roll back basic human rights of the LGBTQ+IA in this country. I am still in shock at the recent hate that has come out towards our community and especially the ‘Anti-Drag’ laws which are completely ludicrous and unjustified. Drag has been around forever. I mean even one of the Vice President candidates in this upcoming election has recently had a picture of himself in ‘drag’ surface. We are not trying to groom your children. We are not trying to turn your children gay, and we certainly aren’t performing for an audience of them in a bar that is 21 and over. DRAG IS NOT A CRIME. What is a crime is the fact that some priests are molesting young boys, creating a lifelong issue of trauma and mental health issues for them. And the kicker to this crime… they don’t get arrested; they just get moved to another church and get to do it all over again. And don’t even get me started on those beauty pageants where the three-year-old contestants look to be about 30 years old. Now that, my friends, is the definition of ‘grooming,’ not the drag queen at brunch or story hour spreading some JOY. In this present day, I believe PRIDE is MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. If you would like to donate to help fight these awful initiatives, please donate to the ACLU Drag Defense Fund.” When asked what elements of Palm Springs Pride inspire her, Ethylina dons

her signature aw-shucks aplomb and answers, “My gosh where do I begin with this question? I am inspired by kindness and acceptance. The overwhelming majority of community members that give back to every organization they can, when given the chance. The pride in the people who live in this desert oasis, and the diversity of the people who choose to call this place home. I feel so lucky to be living amongst so many wonderful people, that I sometimes have to pinch myself and ask, ‘Is this really the place I get to call home?’ I am so grateful every day for the opportunity to do so, and the community here is what makes it so special.”

On behalf of said community, we thank you back times infinity, Ms. Ethylina Canne, and we give you the last word on Palm Springs Pride: “It’s really quite simple: Be you! Be fabulous! ...and don’t let ANYONE try and dull your light. Get out there and spark some JOY in others. That JOY will come back to you more and more when you do so, and those are the moments that truly matter in this life.”

You can also find Ethylina on the second Sunday of the month at The Roost Lounge for Ethyl’s Place Bingo presented by GED Magazine.

So, as we embark on this year’s joyous journey towards Pride, let’s honor the thought leaders above who galvanize our safe spaces. May we dance with deeper meaning, love without limits, and forge a more vibrant queer community.
