or more than three decades, the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards (affectionately known as The Chase) has been one of the desert’s most iconic and impactful evenings — a night when philanthropy, friendship, and entertainment come together to fuel health equity for tens of thousands across Southern California.

On Saturday, February 21, 2026, the tradition continues at the Palm Springs

Convention Center, proudly presented by Desert Care Network, as more than 1,000 guests gather to celebrate compassion in action.

MORE THAN A GALA. A MOVEMENT!

At The Chase, showing up means standing up. Every seat purchased, every sponsorship pledged, and every paddle raised become a force for good — supporting DAP Health’s mission to provide care to more than 88,000 people at 25

locations and eight mobile units.

Founded in 1984 in response to the AIDS crisis, DAP Health has grown into one of the nation’s most respected community health centers. Its unwavering commitment to inclusiveness and dignity has transformed lives for over four decades, ensuring no one is left behind, regardless of income, immigration status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

The Chase honors this spirit. Year after year, the event has attracted

The Temptations

Hollywood legends, Grammy-winning artists, visionary philanthropists, and courageous community leaders, all united by a shared belief that health care is not a privilege but a human right.

THIS YEAR’S SPOTLIGHT: LISA MIDDLETON

In 2026, DAP Health will proudly honor Lisa Middleton, whose leadership has left an indelible mark on Palm Springs and beyond. From expanding affordable housing to advocating for seniors, veterans, and working families, she has led with both heart and resolve. Her recognition with the Community Service Award shines a light not just on her remarkable achievements, but on the values she embodies: integrity, inclusivity, and the courage to lead authentically.

“Lisa Middleton has given so much of herself to this community, with heart, integrity, and a deep commitment to making Palm Springs a place where everyone belongs,” says DAP Health Board Vice Chair and Gala Chair Kevin Bass. “Honoring her is our way of expressing gratitude for the countless ways she’s lifted us all.”

A LEGENDARY SOUNDTRACK: THE TEMPTATIONS

Adding to the magic, The Temptations will headline this year’s gala. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winners of multiple Grammys, and the voices behind timeless hits like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” The Temptations are more than a musical act, they are living history. Their songs have defined generations, bridging divides and inspiring joy. For gala guests, the chance to sway to their soulful harmonies will be both a celebration of music and a reminder of the power of legacy, a perfect echo of The Chase’s enduring mission.

A TRADITION OF COMPASSION

Named in honor of Steve Chase, the world-renowned interior designer and philanthropist whose generosity helped DAP Health flourish in its earliest days, the gala has become one of Coachella Valley’s signature events. It carries his legacy forward, inviting each new gen-

eration to join the cause and invest in a future where everyone can access highquality, affirming care.

The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC) isn’t just a musical group—it’s a powerful voice and cultural cornerstone for the entire Coachella Valley. Founded back in 1999 (originally as The Caballeros), this dedicated ensemble has spent over two decades using the universal language of song to celebrate diversity, advocate equality, and build bridges of understanding. Their mission is clear: to be a chorus of gay men dedicated to entertaining, inspiring, and educating the community through musical excellence, community outreach, and civic responsibility, making them a preeminent voice for the LGBTQ+ community.

PSGMC delivers a world-class experience, typically staging two major concerts each year along with more than a dozen community outreach performances. They are also members of the national GALA Choruses organization. Looking ahead, the chorus is set for an exciting new chapter: they’ve been named an inaugural resident artist at the magnificently restored, historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs, solidifying their status as a vital part of the city’s cultural future.

Their upcoming holiday concert on

December 19, 20, and 21 - Bells, Brass & Sass - is set to be a spectacular concert and community celebration, featuring a wide array of holiday music, from familiar carols to multicultural selections.

Jerry R. Soria-Foust, Artistic Director of the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus tells us, “This is our most ambitious concert yet! The 120 members of PSGMC will take the stage for our inaugural concert at the beautifully and magnificently restored Plaza Theatre. This exciting holi-

day spectacular features familiar tunes, along with plenty of new or reimagined holiday songs. We are thrilled to announce that we will be accompanied by a 13-piece orchestra, which includes members of the acclaimed Desert Winds Freedom Band, additionally we will be joined by a variety of special cameo appearances, including Hula Palm Springs, Nigerian dancer Hassan Shaibu, soloists Kelly Groves and Luis Salcido, a local handbell choir, and DJ Galaxy!”

With music by Cher, Kelly Clarkson, Irving Berlin, and the Weather Girls, along with choral works by Dan Forrest and Eric Whitacre, it is sure to be a night to remember. Highlights include the opening number, “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas” by John Williams, and “Mele Kalikimaka” featuring the graceful movement and gorgeous costumes of Hula Palm Springs. “A truly unforgettable moment in the show will be Hassan Shaibu’s rousing movement, accompanied by drum ensemble in the Nigerian carol, “Betelehemu.” PSGMC has also commissioned two arrangements for this concert, both of which, are sure to become audience favorites,” said Foust.

Truth is a team sport. Living openly and honestly is a great start, but you need allies to amplify your amazingness to the top tier of the proverbial stadium. The crowd is on its feet. They’re ready to go wild. But wait!

Our opponents are on the attack. Their lying lips drip with bile as they grunt slander and sedition, creating a constant face-off between truth and treachery. A hush grips the gridiron.

Then suddenly, a voice of reason breaks the silence.

“When you see misinformation or hate aimed at any group, the most powerful response is accurate, thoughtful reporting. Facts are our greatest defense against fear, and our best bridge to empathy.”

Peter Daut tackles the complexities of communication in the conspiracy era. As the anchor of KESQ-TV’s evening news in Palm Springs, he debunks myths and dominates his field daily.

“I think of journalism as an act of public service,” Daut announces. “People

are overwhelmed with informationsome real, some not - and they need someone to separate fact from fiction. I stay dedicated by remembering that every story affects real lives. That’s why I lean on verified sources, data, and firsthand accounts. The truth might take longer to uncover, but it’s always worth it.”

Daut doesn’t just applaud authenticity; he exemplifies it.

“Visibility matters, especially for younger LGBTQ+ people who need to see that being yourself and being respected in your profession aren’t mutually exclusive. But being out doesn’t mean sharing everything. I’m proud of who I am, but my stories are never about me. I can be out and proud while holding myself to the same standards of fairness, accuracy, and balance that define good journalism.”

Punctuating his point, Daut declares, “Staying objective doesn’t mean silencing compassion. It means using truth as the guide.”

His radical empathy helped Daut expose the shameful and shocking abundance of arsenic in the drinking

ON THE AIR, OFF THE CUFF GET EXCLUSIVE WITH COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHAL

water of underserved communities in the Coachella Valley. But his tireless persistence went beyond the breaking headlines and into legacy territory. “The real impact happens in the weeks and months afterward. Following up is how we hold leaders accountable and show viewers that their voices matter. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, and if we don’t check back, important promises can quietly fade away.”

Daut started the critical conversation, and it won’t end until his passion becomes policy.

“Journalism isn’t just about exposing a problem - it’s about making sure something changes because of it.”

The piece earned Daut the prestigious and well-deserved Edward R. Murrow Award, an honor that delights him yet doesn’t define him. “The real reward

that fuel his philanthropic soul.

“There’s an incredible energy that comes from standing in front of a crowd that’s not only celebrating but giving back. Watching an event raise funds for causes like the Boys & Girls Club, DAP Health, the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast, Inland SoCal United Way, and the like, is pure joy because you see the best of humanity on display- - people coming together to make life better for others. That’s what really moves me. These organizations change lives every single day, and being even a small part of that impact is humbling and deeply fulfilling.”

One good deed can splinter and spiderweb into its surroundings to form a landscape of love. Hailing from Torrance, California, Daut has explored the entire country, covering topics as divisive as presidential elections and as devastating

“BE HEARD IS ABOUT THE COURAGE TO SHOW UP AS YOURSELF AND THE POWER OF STORIES TO CREATE IMPACT. IT’S PERSONAL BECAUSE IT REMINDS ME WHY I BECAME A JOURNALIST-- TO GIVE PEOPLE A PLATFORM AND HELP THEIR EXPERIENCES RESONATE. FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY, IT’S A CELEBRATION OF EVERY PERSON WHO DARES TO SHOW UP, BE VISIBLE, AND SHARE THEIR TRUTH, BECAUSE EACH STORY STRENGTHENS ALL OF US.”

is knowing that what we do, whether through storytelling or service, has a ripple effect. It reminds me that kindness and connection are still powerful forces in the world.”

The Murrow recognition is in great company; Daut is an Emmy-winner six times over.

“There’s nothing quite like that feeling when all the long hours, the interviews, the fact-checking, and the emotion come together into something powerful. It’s not about the trophy; it’s about knowing you told the story right. When someone says, ‘Your piece made me think differently,’ that’s the real reward. The Emmy is just the cherry on top.”

Among his avalanche of accolades, one of Daut’s most cherished achievements is the Above and Beyond award for his commitment to charity work. A fixture at fundraisers across the valley, he proudly donates his time to host galas

as the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting. But amidst the media maelstrom, he always searches for hope.

“Reporting in the Coachella Valley is a completely different rhythm than in bigger cities like LA, Dallas, or Charlotte. Here, the community feels more intimate - you really get to know the people behind the stories. In larger markets, the pace can be fast and the audience vast, but Palm Springs allows for deeper, more personal storytelling. It’s a privilege to cover a place where every voice matters.”

Daut regards the Inland Empire with a sense of warmth, both literal and figurative.

“The desert has always had a unique pull on me. There’s something about the light, the mountains, and the sense of community here that you can’t find anywhere else. The Coachella Valley is both peaceful and vibrant; it’s a place where people come to celebrate life, and that

energy is contagious. What makes it so special is the balance: it offers relaxation and serenity, but also this incredible spirit of inclusivity and joy. That combination makes it feel like home in a way no other place has.”

Adopting an aw-shucks tone, Daut explains that home is where the hubby is.

“My husband, David, is truly my best friend. We didn’t meet on an app; we met the old-fashioned way... in a parking lot! It was Halloween night in 2019. I was heading to the Arenas District in Palm Springs dressed as Clark Kent, and Dave - on his very first visit to Palm Springs - was a pirate. We struck up a conversation right outside the Rooster and the Pig restaurant, and what could have been just a brief exchange turned into the beginning of the greatest adventure of my life. And honestly, it’s reassuring to know that superheroes and pirates can coexist peacefully in the wild.”

We arrrre so happy for them! Pirate talk aside, Daut ponderously plunders the depths of life’s deeper meaning. “For us, it’s the simple joys-- enjoying a delicious meal together (Dave’s an amazing cook!), relaxing by our pool, and spending time with our dogs.”

Puppy love is a major influence on Daut’s enduringly optimistic POV.

“Animals have this incredible ability to love without judgment. No matter how chaotic the world feels, my rescue dogs Milo and Moo are a constant reminder of what truly matters: compassion, loyalty, and presence. They don’t care about your deadlines or headlines; they just want your time and affection. Supporting organizations like Guide Dogs of the Desert and Animal Samaritans is my way of giving back to the creatures who give us so much joy and grounding every single day.”

Fur sure! But humans also need to unleash their wild side every now and then, so this doggy daddy is eagerly anticipating the weekend of November 7-9 in Palm Springs.

“Attending Pride is like stepping into the happiest, most colorful block party you’ve ever imagined. You’ll hear music everywhere, see people smiling, and feel a wave of positivity.”

The local news legend conjures a

global stance as he continues, “Pride truly transcends borders and brings people together in joy.”

Daut is an emcee of equality, and his boundless benevolence will be on full display in the parade. He recounts, “When I opened the email from Greater Palm Springs Pride telling me I’d been selected Community Grand Marshal, I couldn’t stop smiling for hours. I felt deeply honored and humbled to be recognized in this way.”

In true PS fashion, the journalist joins drag queens and dignitaries alike in a royal procession of fierce festiveness. “What a joy to share this honor with my fellow inductees. Every one of them has made a real difference in their own way, and being a part of this group feels like joining a family of changemakers. I’m so inspired by their passion, their advocacy, and their heart. Together, we’re celebrating not just Pride, but the power of unity, love, and progress.”

Our solidarity is supersonic, so listen up! Daut discusses the significance of

“THE DESERT HAS ALWAYS HAD A UNIQUE PULL ON ME. THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE LIGHT, THE MOUNTAINS, AND THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY HERE THAT YOU CAN’T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE.”

this year’s theme on both a micro and macro level.

“Be Heard is about the courage to show up as yourself and the power of

stories to create impact. It’s personal because it reminds me why I became a journalist-- to give people a platform and help their experiences resonate. For the LGBTQ+ community, it’s a celebration of every person who dares to show up, be visible, and share their truth, because each story strengthens all of us.”

We form a tapestry of the triumphant, and Peter Daut is waving us into the winners’ circle.

“Pride is for everyone,” he concludes. “Celebrate who you are, honor those who came before, and lift up those who will come after. Be visible, be heard, and most importantly, be kind - to yourself and to others. That’s what makes community strong.”

Flex your individuality, summon your camaraderie, and put on your game face because Palm Springs Pride kicks off November 6th. Our rivals conspire to crush our spirit with hateful chants and libelous rants, but our truth remains undefeated.

We came to play, so stay out of our way.

Paradise Found Paradise Found

Casa Yvonneka, Puerto Vallarta’s #1

to Zona Romantica and the Malecon... Casa Yvonneka is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY – Los Angeles: Most of us have seen at least one of the seven Paranormal Activity films. They tell their stories using found footage from security cameras and other devices, which give them a feeling of credibility. The films are typically based around families who become haunted by an evil demon known as “Tobi” that stalks, terrifies and ultimately murders several members of the family and other bystanders.

One of those stories is now being presented as a play. In the stage version, James and Lou move from Chicago to London to escape the past … but they soon discover that places aren’t haunted, people are. An original story set in the world of the terrifying Paranormal Activity film franchise, this thrilling new play is from celebrated playwright Levi Holloway with illusions by Tony Award-winner Chris Fisher (Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Harry Potter & The Cursed Child). Movies can control where and what you see. They can use “jump scares” where something unexpected pops up, and any number of effects using film trickery. I would love for this play to be half as scary as it is advertised to be but that will be a challenge since it is playing at Los Angeles’s 2,000-seat Ahmanson Theatre!

A couple of years ago Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opened on Broadway. It was a well-told and well-acted story which incorporated more stage illusions than David Copperfield. It played in one of Broadway’s largest theatres and on tour at the Hollywood Pantages. I saw both productions and the effects were very visible and believable even in the large auditoriums. The same illusionist is on board for Paranormal Activity

The Los Angeles producers promise that “this world premiere play will haunt you long after the lights go out. We can’t say anything else.” They’ve also slapped an “R” rating on it for good measure. Plays at the Ahmanson Theatre 11/13 - 12/7.

THE FILMS ARE TYPICALLY BASED AROUND FAMILIES WHO BECOME HAUNTED BY AN EVIL DEMON KNOWN AS “TOBI” THAT STALKS, TERRIFIES AND ULTIMATELY MURDERS SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY AND OTHER BYSTANDERS.

PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESRT – Palm Springs: Palm Canyon Theatre, the longest-lived community theatre in the Coachella Valley, has produced Priscilla, Queen of the Desert twice in the last decade and it has been a huge success both times. They are once again staging it in time for Palm Springs Pride, and indeed, it is a musical that you can enjoy every several years.

Since you are reading this magazine, I take as given that you have seen the iconic movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. You’ll recall that two drag queens and a trans woman in Sydney are invited to do a drag show in Alice Springs, located dead center in the continent of Australia. They decide to drive a bus that becomes available. They christen the bus Priscilla and their journey with Priscilla is an adventure to be sure! One of the most ever-present issues is that Australia’s center is largely a desert with most of the population within 50 miles of the coast. That means that to reach Alice Springs, the queens must navigate their bus through hundreds and hundreds of miles of red sand.

Though the movie is virtually a travelogue, it transfers to the stage surprisingly well. It is a jukebox musical with such recognizable anthems as “It’s Raining Men,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Go West,” “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” and “We Belong Together.”

In the previous two PCT productions, Bernadette has been played by local character man Ron Coronado. He will once again play the role in this year’s production, and he will be joined by Noah Walberg as Adam/Felicia and Tegr Powell as as Tick/Mitzi.

The musical was first staged in Sydney in 2006 and on Broadway in 2011. It has toured numerous times to fairly obscure corners of the world. It’s a fairly tame way to see a drag show and also become part of a touching story. And it is indeed a very touching story. As our girls have bonded with each other as they face the challenges of the trip, we have bonded with them. When they finally get to take a picture on Ayer’s Rock, they label it “A cock in a frock on a rock,” and by that time, we love them. Plays at the Palm Canyon Theatre through 11/16.

IT IS A JUKEBOX MUSICAL WITH SUCH RECOGNIZABLE ANTHEMS AS “IT’S RAINING MEN,” “I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER,” “GO WEST,” “THANK GOD I’M A COUNTRY BOY” AND “WE BELONG TOGETHER.”

DOG SEES GOD – Palm Springs: The LGBTQ+ theatre company of Palm Springs, The Bent, is presenting Dog Sees God – Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead next month. The play was written in 2004 by Bert V. Royal. It isn’t often performed but seeing that The Bent is producing it, I’m excited. An “unauthorized continuation,” the play reimagines characters from the comic strip Peanuts as degenerate teenagers. Substance abuse, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion, sexual relations and identity are among the issues covered in this homage to the works of Charles M. Schulz. The lead character is called CB. He demands that no one call him by his full name, Charlie Brown. The other Peanuts characters are instantly recognizable, even with different names. Stoner Van burned his blanket and smoked it. The one-time pigpen-dwelling Matt is now never seen without his stash of hand sanitizer. Van’s sister is still doling out advice at five cents a pop, though these days she does it while institutionalized. We don’t actually see her until the second act when we learn she has been in rehab.

The Bent performs at the Palm Springs Cultural Center (formerly the Camelot Theatre). Their shows are attracting quite a following so you should purchase your reserved seating early. Plays from 12/5 – 12/21.

AN “UNAUTHORIZED CONTINUATION,” THE PLAY REIMAGINES CHARACTERS FROM THE COMIC STRIP PEANUTS

AS DEGENERATE

TEENAGERS. SUBSTANCE ABUSE,

EATING DISORDERS, TEEN VIOLENCE, REBELLION, SEXUAL RELATIONS AND IDENTITY ARE AMONG THE ISSUES COVERED IN THIS HOMAGE TO THE WORKS OF CHARLES M. SCHULZ.

TO MY GIRLS – San Diego: The Diversionary Theatre in San Diego is America’s third-oldest LGBTQ+ theatre company. Their shows are always excellent productions and always gay/ lesbian themed. Their theatre is located in a mostly residential neighborhood, University Heights, so allow time for street parking. It’s near several individually owned coffee houses which set the tone for the neighborhood – laid back and a bit herbal. The theatre itself is upstairs and seats around 80 people so you’re never more than five or six rows from the stage. The ground floor of the building used to house a box office and a counter where you could grab a drink. Over the past few years, it has been converted into The Clark Cabaret with its own lineup of entertainment Wednesday through Sunday. The entertainment is often, though not exclusively, gaythemed or gay artists.

This month’s mainstage offering, To My Girls, is the story of a tight-knit group of gay men who reunite in Palm Springs for a weekend of rekindling friendships and toasting the end of the pandemic. Their planned highlight of the outing is recording a lip-synched music video. Turns out a vacation in this dreamy town is not all fun and games when there’s gossip and grudges floating in the air. To My Girls is described as a hysterical yet deeply moving play about chosen family and how we move forward as a community in times of change and uncertainty.

The play has plenty of laughs which make the conflicts between the houseguests more impactful, but along the way, we get some campy singing and some pretty hot men running around in mini-Speedos (well, we told you it is set in Palm Springs!). Runs at Diversionary Theatre 11/13 – 12/7.

TO MY GIRLS, IS THE STORY OF A TIGHT-KNIT GROUP OF GAY MEN WHO REUNITE IN PALM SPRINGS FOR A WEEKEND OF REKINDLING FRIENDSHIPS AND TOASTING THE END OF THE PANDEMIC. THEIR PLANNED HIGHLIGHT OF THE OUTING IS RECORDING A LIP-SYNCHED MUSIC VIDEO. TURNS OUT A VACATION IN THIS DREAMY TOWN IS NOT ALL FUN AND GAMES WHEN THERE’S GOSSIP AND GRUDGES FLOATING IN THE AIR.

ROAMING WITH ROMA

The subject of the email was “Surprise.” It read, “On behalf of the Greater Palm Springs Pride organization, I’m reaching out to you to let you know the board of directors has voted unanimously to recognize you as the Grand Marshal of the annual Greater Palm Springs Pride Parade celebration on November 9, 2025. We are proud to recognize your unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community.” Honey, trust me when I tell you, ‘surprise’ is an understatement. I am gobsmacked, thrilled, and humbled by this incredible honor! I’m especially grateful for this recognition because in my 38 years as a Sister, accolades and awards have never been the goal. My drag has always been, and always will be, motivated by service and activism.

I moved to San Francisco from Grand Rapids, Michigan, after graduating from College in 1985. After work one day, a group of friends and I were sipping happy hour cocktails at the Midnight Sun. Suddenly, the door flew open, and in walked this drag queen/showgirl/clown/nun: I was mesmerized. She came over and addressed me by name. “Do I know you?” I asked. “It’s me, Norman,” She whispered.

Norman was one of my good friends, but he had never mentioned that he did drag. He told me he was Sister Luscious Lashes, one of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. I had never heard of the Sisters, but I quickly learned they were pioneers in HIV/AIDS education and prevention. The Sisters produced the world’s first safer-sex pamphlet called PLAYFAIR and were the first group to hold an HIV/ AIDS fundraiser for people who needed help with practical expenses like rent and toothpaste. I was impressed and inspired by their bravery, compassion, humor, and activism. It felt like my head and my heart exploded. I realized that I cared about my community and human rights. I wanted to be of service, fight for equality, and spread joy. I joined the Order in 1987. HIV/AIDS was ravaging our community. The obits were pages long, and every day our friends and lovers became visibly stricken with the disease. They suffered sudden, dramatic weight loss, and in some cases, their bodies and faces were covered with purple lesions after being diagnosed with Kaposi’s Sarcoma. Due to the fear and stigma surrounding AIDS, most of these men lost their jobs, their apartments, and often their family and friends were afraid to touch them. As Sisters, we would seek them out and engage them in conversation. After a heartfelt talk and maybe some tears, these men, many of whom had not had human contact in weeks, would ask for a hug. The Sisters always said yes. That’s when I knew I’d found my calling. This kind of one-onone ministry has always been at the core of my mission.

Leveraging my platform as a Sister, I’ve used my voice to create social movements and global campaigns. One of my earliest forms of activism was creating the Sisters’ Stop The Violence Campaign in 1989. Later, we added a whistle distribution and self-defense classes. That campaign still exists today. In 2014, I took on Facebook as the creator of the #MyNameIs campaign, a coalition of drag artists and other activists demanding the right to self-identify on the world’s largest social networking platform. This year, a slew of brutal attacks on predominantly gay men who use hookup apps made national headlines and hit home in San Francisco. This

prompted me, my Sister Shalita Corndog, and our friend, producer J Andrew of Liberty Lane Films, to create “Safety First, Sexy Second.” It’s a common-sense video and print campaign around safety when hooking up with strangers. You can see it online at thesisters.org/safetyfirst.

In my nearly four decades in the habit, I have marched and stood in solidarity with people of color, women, the transgender community, queer youth, the unhoused, those struggling with addiction, sex workers, and more. I have had the privilege to host events and appear on stages around the globe. In the process, I’ve been able to contribute to raising millions of dollars for charity. Often, people come up and thank me for all of my “work.” That always gives me pause because none of this feels like work. As Sisters, we vow to “expiate stigmatic guilt and promulgate universal joy.” We also take vows to the community we serve and to “never take ourselves so seriously that we forget to have fun.” That last one is my favorite. I’m not that serious, or that special. I’m just out here trying to do what I can in my short lifetime to make the world a tiny bit better place for having been here - and I’m having a lot of fun doing it!

I’d like to thank the Board of Directors of Palm Springs Pride for this recognition. I’d also like to thank my Sisters for inspiring me and all you do for your communities around the globe. Most of all, I want to thank all of you, my vibrant LGBTQ+ community, for embracing and supporting me all these years. I am consistently impressed by the compassion, generosity, and unbridled queer joy each of you brings to this world. I can’t wait to see everyone and celebrate YOU with PRIDE!

P.S. - I hope you’ll join me for Mx. Pinapple Cabaret - Palm Springs at Oscar’s on Wednesday, November 19. I’ve assembled an amazing cast of some of my favorite adult industry stars, live vocalists, and drag legends for a night filled with glamour and queer joy! We are raising money for the life-saving free and subsidized mental health services provided by pineapplesupport.org. For more info and tickets, visit OscarsPalmSprings.com.

BILLY L’AMOUR GIVES US L’IFE SHE

SINGS! SHE STYLES! SHE SLAYS!

When life hands you lemons, make a mess. Mash ‘em, douse them in vodka, fashion them into a Carmen Miranda headpiece - get crazy, get creative, and become the lemon queen of your own lemon party!

Quickly changing the subject, the world just loves to define us. We’re told what role to play, and which dreams to deny, but what if we just threw lemons at all of that? Sour up expectations, spread your proverbial wings, and seize every damn day with an appetite for variety.

“I’m very lucky that as a ballet dancer, as a singing drag queen, and as a wig stylist, I’ve been able to do what most people would probably consider impossible.” Billy L’Amour chuckles at her own unconventional ambitions, but she’s laughing all the way to the bank. “They’re the worst ideas for a career, but I’ve been able to make a living doing what I love, and I really think that’s part of the purpose of life.”

And she’s living at full volume! A comedy queen with lewks for miles and pipes of gold, Billy is the toast of the gayest town on gawd’s green earth: Palm

Springs. But it wasn’t always sunshine and brunch realness.

“I grew up in Palm Beach, which was much more conservative,” she recounts. “They didn’t show movies like Trick in theaters in the ‘90s, so I went with a friend. We skipped school and we went down to an art house cinema in South Beach and we saw it, and I’ll never forget it.”

Escapism flourished in Billy’s burgeoning POV. “I came at drag in a different way than most people. My first drag job was in an all-male drag ballet company. I was a ballet dancer for many years of dancing on point, and I danced all over the world, so for me, drag comes from being rooted in the tradition of theater. It wasn’t in nightclubs and nightlife. My inspirations were Jim Bailey, Charles Pierce, Danny La Rue, all of these old school theater queens who could sing, act, tell jokes, do characters, and they were really just these kinds of Renaissance men who are also these larger than life queens/women.”

From an early age, Billy developed a verve for versatility. It guided her from idolizing trailblazers to collaborating

with them. Just ask her Bosom Buddies co-star Sherry Vine.

“Sherry and I have a long history that she was not aware of. She’s an icon. She’s been doing drag for over 30 years. I had the little drag queen paper doll cutout book in the ‘90s that had Sherry Vine in it… I would see her perform at a club called Barracuda in New York City in the late ‘90s early 2000s. Every night there was a different drag queen there and every week they would do a two-hour brand new show. And all the queens came to party and laugh and kiki and it was just such a creative, magical time and left such a huge impression on me and that is one of the reasons why I’m doing the Velvet Rope Cabaret L’Amour now, because I’m now doing that every week to sort of get that out. I need to create. I need to do that. I need to connect with people. So, it’s taken me back to my roots.”

When asked to elaborate on the fabu festivities, Billy doesn’t disappoint.

“I’m creating a brand new show every Thursday at 7 o’clock at the Velvet Rope Hotel, which is a gorgeous Hollywood Regency style fantasy world. You don’t

“I’M VERY LUCKY THAT

A

BALLET DANCER,

AS A SINGING

QUEEN, AND AS A WIG STYLIST, I’VE BEEN ABLE TO DO WHAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD PROBABLY CONSIDER IMPOSSIBLE.”

even feel like you’re in Palm Springs when you’re there; it’s really special. So people: dress up, come out, and have a gay old time filled with comedy, glamour, and a lot of heart. We’re really creating something special there. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before.”

That’s saying a lipstick-shellacked mouthful! Billy is as busy as a one-legged streetwalker, frequently collaborating with her favorite peeps: Deven Green and Handsome Ned. “Deven and Ned are two of the best people I have met on this planet. Not only are they extremely talented and can do and create anything, but they are salt of the earth, show up for you at the drop of the hat when you need them kind of people. My husband and I went to get married at the courthouse and we didn’t have a witness and we called them. They were there in 17 minutes and we got married.”

From the personal to the professional, Billy’s besties bolster her soul. “I’m continually inspired by them because they’re hustlers like me. They never stop,” she declares. “It’s important as artists and just as people in general for us to have other like-minded people who are trying to get the most out of this life while we can.”

Billy is a businesswoman with a capital BUSINESS, and her clients are flipping their lids.

“When I’m styling a wig the time disappears. It just flies by. I’m in the zone,” she beams. “I’ve been very fortunate that

it’s grown into a pretty lucrative business for me. I have manufactured my own line of wigs like my colleagues Raquel Welch, or Eva Gabor, or Vivica Fox.”

Even if you’re not in the market for a new ‘do, Billy can tease your piece, so to speak. “I’ve gotten to style wigs for Kate Pierson from the B52s, so many Ru girls, just so many incredible experiences and ones that I also can’t talk about because of NDAs.”

Oh, this tea is scalding hot. Spill it, gurl!

“Coco Peru has only ever one worn one wig in her entire life, but I gave her a makeover.” Gregarious giggles eclipse Billy’s words as she describes how she unveiled “Post-Covid Coco with her gray streak in her hair - she’s been wearing that one wig for the past five years!”

But Ms. Peru isn’t just Billy’s muse; she’s a mentor.

“Coco Peru told me after seeing my last show that she does her political activism by confronting people to their face with it in her shows. She said that I do my political activism by making them come to me and welcoming them into this whole world of drag. And before they know it, they’re in it and they love it. I never discuss politics in my shows… I feel that I want to build bridges right now in the United States of America. It doesn’t seem like anybody wants to build a bridge. And so I just want to have two hours where we can all let go of all those

labels and connect and laugh and just share an incredible experience together.”

In the impeccably manicured hands of Billy L’Amour, politics are a playground. Even hot-button issues like gender are handled with whimsy and wit. “I am very fluid. He, him, she, her - but when I am in drag, if I am called ‘he’ it does make my skin crawl a little because it’s like, was that a read?’ I work pretty hard on looking as good as I can, like, how dare you call me ‘he’? But I don’t take myself that seriously.”

Indeed, her shows are a mix of bawdy barnburners and torch song triumphs. They’re filled with sexy satire, sexy seduction, and sexy-fried sexiness… and heart.

“These are experiences that every human being: gay, straight, trans, noncis, whatever, any labels you want to put on the outside, because on the inside, we all have those same experiences.”

Billy grounds her shows in the relatable while launching her themes into the stratosphere.

“You’re going to be welcomed into my world. Everyone is invited to the party. We are gonna laugh, feel our feelings, and celebrate each other. You’re going to leave feeling on cloud nine, and want to take all of that glamour and that sense of fearlessness and joy and playfulness out into the world.”

Waxing reflective, she traces a path from the queer-and-now all the way back to her curious kid-hood.

“I’m so proud of the little gay boy in the ‘90s watching the RuPaul show on VH1 and Wigstock the documentary, looking at the drag queen paper doll cutout book and actually even sneaking out of school to go see Trick in a movie theater in South Beach when I was a teenager. I never would’ve thought then that I would be getting to do all of these things and so it’s a reminder for me and I guess to everyone that the universe has amazing things in store for us. We just gotta keep on keeping on.”

You’ve come a long way, Billy - and we’re thrilled to follow your lead. So, kick ordinary in the crotch, tell limitations to take a hike, and see/hear/experience Billy L’Amour immediately!

MOVIES ARE SO GAY!

NOVEMBER 14

THANKS - Schedule your cheat day to coincide with the release of The Running Man because Glen Powell is a tasty snack. He smirks, he sweats, he smacks his own ass in a pair of very fortunate tighty-whities… oh, and he’s also trying to survive against all odds as the entire nation is gunning to kill him. Set in an apocalyptic hellscape, TRM depicts a world of rich a-holes who amuse themselves by terrorizing poor people. So, it’s basically our current timeline. Ouch.

‘TPASS THE GAY GRAVY (SLURP) AND DIG INTO THESE NOVEMBER FILM RELEASES is the season for gratitude and attitude. The holidays bring gaudy, festive treats along with travel obligations and stress by the sleigh-load. So how can you remedy the November ick? Answer: with a flick!

We’re previewing the best and worst movies of the month with a rating system we like to call Thanks & Spanks. Intrigued? Play on…

NOVEMBER 7

THANKS - Experience an intoxicating adrenaline buzz, courtesy of the sci-fi thrill ride Predator: Badlands. The film’s tagline is “Hunt First, Last Chance,” which sounds like every gay bar at last call. Explore the most dangerous place in the universe on this side of Costco on a Saturday morning. The plot revolves around a plucky cyborg who helps the title creature battle monsters, mayhem, and severely misguided dreadlocks. The hair horror… The hair horror… SPANKS - And now for something *really* scary. Have yourself a maga little Christmas with two toxic titles arriving just in time to spoil the season. Kelsey Grammer ruins The Christmas Ring and Kevin Sorbo stinks up the screen in Christmas Eve. Apparently shot on a camcorder in Ben Shapiro’s basement, these yuletide tumors metastasize merriment with a ho-ho-holy s*** these “films” are bad. Crappy holidays! THANKS - Christy is fun for the whole family. Quick question: your family is into hardcore lesbian boxing dramas featuring drug abuse and mullets aplenty, right? Thought so. Sydney Sweeney slugs her way into Oscar contention as the most successful female fighter of the ‘90s, right up there with Punchy McGee and Girly Gloves O’Malley. Confession: we legit couldn’t think of any other female fighters from the ‘90s, so we made up those names. Anywho, this movie is a knockout!

SPANKS - Pass the potatoes because Nicolas Cage is bringing the ham. He chews so much scenery in The Carpenter’s Son that he’s gonna get a biblical bellyache. In the trailer, Cage screams, “My faith has been shattered!” and his Karen-esque hairdo screams, “I’m gonna call your manager!” Centered around the childhood of Jesus Christ, we’re hoping there’s a scene in which the precocious kiddo turns water into juiceboxes. If not, this unholy mess will be unwatchable.

THANKS - The crafty crew from the first two Now You See Me films is back for a third installment, and they’re adding the deliciously devious Rosamund Pike to the proceedings. These mischievous magicians can make diamonds disappear faster than your panties at a Bad Bunny concert. Ta-da, ta-DAYYUM!

NOVEMBER 21

THANKS - If you haven’t already purchased tickets to see Wicked: For Good, you’re officially homophobic. It’s the queerest thing coming out for Thanksgiving, which is traditionally the comingout-iest holiday there is. So, tell your obvi-gay cousin to save their “big announcement” for Xmas because you’ll be watching WFG on repeat all damn week. How gay is this sumptuous sequel? Let us count the ways. Elphaba is demonized by a charlatan dictator who smears her in a propaganda campaign that would make Newsmax blush. There’s even a moment in the trailer when the misunderstood witch caresses a golden brick - we can thank her for Stonewall, y’all! Seriously, this is a fierce feast for the senses; the gowns flow like brunchtime mimosas, the

notes shimmer from the actors’ sublime sing-holes, and the themes bristle with urgency. Trust us, bestie: when you see this triumph, you’ll be changed for good.

SPANKS - Brendan Fraser plays an actor (what a stretch) who gains redemption by being a father figure for hire in Rental Family. This might be a quality movie, but it has the audacity to premiere the same day as Wicked: For Good, so we pre-hate it. Next!

SPANKS - Cactus Pears is the title of another movie that has the nerve to go up against Wicked 2. What’s it about - a cactus or a pear? Better question: who cares? Next!

SPANKS - There’s a gawd awful animated Christian movie called David and we can’t even finish this sentence without retching robustly and religiously. Ne–[puke sounds] Next!

NOVEMBER 26

THANKS - Our only critique of Zootopia 2 is that the voice cast is so good, we wish they appeared on screen rather than being animated. This would satisfy our enduring fantasy of Idris Elba as a furry. Grr, woof, etc! The everenticing Elba is joined by mega talents like Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan, Quinta Brunson, Macaulay Culkin, Bonnie Hunt, Patrick Warburton, Shakira, Jenny Slate, Tommy Chong and Fortune Feimster. But perhaps the casting coup of the century can be summed up by this blunt bullet point on the Zootopia 2 Wikipedia page: “Ed Sheeran as Ed Shearin, a sheep.” Baaaarilliant!

THANKS - Imagine you’re torn between two men. Now imagine it’s not a typical weekend in Palm Springs, but instead an Eternity of love, loss, longing, and laughter. This new tragicomedy delves into an afterlife filled with mirth, mysticism, and ménage à troiseseses. Will she choose the hunky, chiseled war hero or the hunky, chiseled funny guy? Um, why don’t the two hunky, chiseled fellas just choose each other? The end, amen!

You know what? We’re still mad at all of the movies that aren’t Wicked: For Good. Spanks all around! And thanks for reading/watching/gaying it up with us this holiday season. Gobble responsibly.
