Chester Government Update

This regular trustee meeting began with a presentation by Don Rice of the Metzenbaum Center, providing information about the services they offer and the wide range of people (ages and abilities) that they serve.

Next, the board went into an executive session concerning union negotiations and employee compensation. Upon returning to public session, the room was full of friends, family, firefighters and supporters of Andy Nagy as he was sworn in as chief of Chester Fire Rescue. Nagy, who began his career as a cadet, has come full circle in his career. Lt. Scalese praised Nagy, commenting about his leadership and support when Scalese first joined the fire service and how he benefited from Nagy’s mentorship.

Next, a few residents spoke about their concerns regarding potentially re-zoning a residential parcel of township-owned land known as Parkside Park. It was explained that the property is zoned residential and it was merely a proposed change to the zoning map. This parcel was deeded to the township in 1811 to always and forever be used as “public parade grounds.” The use of Parkside Park has been, is and always will be consistent with the deed restrictions.

In Road Department business, there was discussion about getting crack sealing pricing for township roads from the contractor that will be selected by the Geauga County Engineer to do county roads. The board approved GCE plans for improvement to Pinewood Trail and Woodlands Trail. This work will be publicly bid and completed this season, and $10,000 was also approved for Osborn Engi-

Matilda Tumada shared her project, “Development of Antimicrobial Soap Formulated with Rambutan Extract and its Impact on Bacterial Growth.” She earned second place in Chemistry and received multiple special awards from the American Chemical Society - Cleveland Section, Cleveland Clinic - Lerner Research Institute and the William R. Sweet Award for Chemistry.

Robert Vash took third place in Engineering and was recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers - Cleveland Section for his project, “Presentation of an Alternative Lock Design.”

Both students were recently recognized at the West Geauga Board of Education meeting.

neering to assist with design specifications for repair of the salt dome (deteriorating concrete walls) and $45,000 was approved for Watts Excavating to assist the township with various pipe installations throughout the town.

A letter was approved requesting the GCE to identify the road right-of-way along the south side from 7505 Sherman Road to Hawken School. There are a significant number of dead pine trees that the township is evaluating for removal (reduce road hazards and likelihood of striking a power line). The township also approved a resolution for winter salt through ODOT in the amount of 4,000 tons +/-10%.

The board received from the Chester Zoning Commission and will advertise for a public hearing (May 15 at 7 p.m.) to consider amendments to our zoning resolution for side yard accessory buildings and permitting rooftop solar panels (see our website for more information).

Township Administrator Mark Purchase provided an update on the need to replace the aged treatment system for the township’s drinking water supply.

At the end of the public meeting, there was an executive session to consider compensation of public employee(s). No actions were taken coming out of that meeting and the public meeting was closed.

Memorial Day services will be at Chester Township Cemetery (Chillicothe Road) on May 26 at 10 a.m. We hope to see you there for this special event.

Obituaries

Dorothy Rhoades Herrick

Dorothy Rhoades Herrick, a.k.a. Moo, Omie and Grandma, a 52-year resident of Chester Township, passed away at her home, on April 18, 2025. She was almost 99 years old.

Born on Aug. 3, 1926, Dorothy grew up in Euclid, attending all grades at Shore School. In 10th grade she met her soulmate and love of her life, Tom Herrick, and during their col lege years they married.

Early life was in Euclid, where Tom and Dot, both being very community minded, were involved with the Euclid Jaycees. Then came the move to South Euclid, where school PTAs, (including a Wild West Carnival where ponies were brought into the school gymnasium), American Field Service and high school athletics garnered their support.

her passions.

January 1973 brought them to the farm in Chesterland and they eventually became very active in the Chesterland Historical Foundation. One of her favorite roles there was as program director, whether she was hosting antique appraisals or inviting speakers to come, and she was even the gal to start what is now the annual event of a flea market on CHF grounds every August.

Dorothy was a lifelong antique collector and dealer and eventually started two estate liquidation businesses that were wildly successful and a great joy and huge focus in her life, for over 48 years. And she was always a crafter — with some of her projects actually turning out well! Genealogy was another of

The Herricks traveled often, whether mystery trips with family or overseas with friends. They were incredibly generous and shared a magnetic personality and terrific sense of humor. Dorothys mantra was "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."

Dorothy is survived by her four children, Pamela (Dewey) Thomas, of Howell, Mich., Wendy (Paul) Nye, of Chesterland, Thomas Herrick Jr., of Chesterland, and William Herrick, of Newbury Township; five grandchildren, Peter (Jaimie) Nye, of Orange Village, Jeffrey (Abigail) Nye, of Cincinnati, and Kevin (Jenna) Nye, of Highland Heights, Helene Herrick, of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Shannon Herrick, of Woodstock, Vt.; five great-grandchildren, Allison and Iris Nye, Delilah and Herrick Nye, and Samantha Nye; and sister, Barbara Rhoades, of Twinsburg.

In addition, Tom and Dorothy were surrogate parents to some very special people: Helga, Kathie, Donna, Katy, Margaret, Dani, Duvy, Magic, Chrissie and Judy, not to mention extended family members.

Dorothy is preceded in death by Thomas G. Herrick, her beloved husband of 69 years.

The family wishes to express the most heartfelt thanks to The Hospice of the Western Reserve and especially our team leader, "Nurse Diane."

Any memorial donations can be made to the Chesterland Historical Foundation or The Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Notices should be sent in writing to: Geauga County Maple Leaf, P.O. Box 1166, Chardon, OH, 44024-5166 or emailed to editor@karlovecmedia.com.
