From my travels across the UK this year and last, it has been heartening to witness businesses brimming with confidence and electing to invest in their businesses. The need to become evermore efficient to deliver increased competitiveness is at the core of this ambition, and it is these forward-minded businesses whose spirit and determination will underpin them in what will, for at least the short term will be more straightened times than we’ve seen for some time.

With rather depressing news leeching out from almost every quarter at the moment, I am, say it quietly, sensing a healthy robustness from our industry, for the time being. As the long, hot summer cools over the coming weeks, I look forward to an autumn and winter which will remain a positive one for UK furniture and joinery manufacturers. Judging by what I see and hear from many suppliers at the moment, despite the many challenges the furniture and joinery sector continues to trend well for machinery, equipment, fittings and components as UK manufacturers continue to invest to be more efficient and more effective.

John Legg, editorial director

Also worth mentioning at this point in time is that W Exhibition is almost 12 months away in September 24th-27th, 2023. We hope to bring you further news regarding the only live, side-by-side comparison event soon. And last but certainly not least on the events front, a few delegate tickets remain available to furniture and joinery manufacturers for the inaugural Furniture & Joinery Conference in October … full details on p26 and via www.fjconference.com.

Finally in this bumper issue, we present a clutch of our ever-popular installation articles featuring Nicklin Furniture, Hermann Miller, Huws Gray, Exorna Kitchens & Bedrooms, Mumford & Wood and Cheshire Mouldings.

I trust you enjoy the issue – and do keep up to date with what’s going via Twitter and LinkedIn, and don’t forget to sign up to our weekly Newsletter for the latest updates.

In the initial phase of onboarding technology, Unilin will use it for internal recycling at its Bazeilles production site, which has a history of cutting-edge production technology. Production capacity will gradually be increased to allow the recycling of externally sourced fibreboards and laminate floors with the goal to replace at least 25% of raw material with recycled fibres by 2030. This patented technology is a world-first and part of a wider investment programme in sustainable technology and initiatives, including a further €160m investment for projects over the next two years.

Unilin Panels already uses 100% recovered wood for the production of its MDF and HDF. This is wood sourced from waste streams of the timber industry and lowgrade timber from sustainable forest management and roadside maintenance. The new technology will combine with this recovered wood for production that moves closer to being truly circular. world first moves Unilin Panels Closer to circularity

Head of sales and operations at First Install, Mike McVey, commented: “By joining forces, we have extended our geographical capabilities and established a new multi million pound nationwide operator with the shared aim of becoming the first choice for the design, manufacture and installation of beautiful interior fit outs along with furniture and retail display installation, across a range of different industry sectors.

Transformational recycling technology from Unilin Panels reclaims wood fibre from HDF and MDF and gives it a second life. MDF and HDF boards are commonly used in furniture and interior design, yet it has been impossible to recover and recycle them for reuse. Unilin Panels is beginning its journey to change this, reclaiming the wood fibres from HDF and MDF in a viable way for reuse in the production of highquality fibreboards. Over time, it will lock-in 380,000 tons of CO2 per year in the circular production of fibreboards.

Salford-based furniture installation and interior fit out specialist First Install has been purchased by Ipswich-based Apex Joinery for an undisclosed sum.

Salford’s First Install acquired with plans for growth

Véronique Hoflack, president of Unilin PanelsMike McVey

www.apexjoinery.co.ukwww.firstinstall.co.uk

Véronique Hoflack, president of Unilin Panels, says: “Because of the use of adhesives as a binding agent for the wood fibres, no industrially viable method existed to recycle the fibres from fibreboard waste at the end of their product life. That means that the lion’s share is incinerated after use (on average 14-20 years). “We have now succeeded in developing a new and innovative process to recycle these wood fibres and reuse them for the production of new panel material. For example our decorative Evola panels or Quick-Step laminate floors. This new technology doubles the life of the wood fibres. This longer life will give new trees the chance to grow and, in turn, store CO2. A major step forward towards circularity.”

“In addition to being a mutually beneficial partnership, both combined businesses are committed to further growth and job creation and plan to bring additional complementary businesses on board forming an all-encompassing and experienced group that offers added value and choice for clients and give the client a compelling reason to choose us when selecting an installation, manufacturing and fit out partner.”

The acquisition strengthens both businesses creating a new multi-million pound partnership with operating bases in both the north and south of the country with the ability to deliver a wide range of bespoke joinery, manufacturing, installations, and interior fit out solutions to clients nationwide. With two offices and a combined team of more than 50 personnel, both First Install and Apex Joinery can expect to double turnover in the coming 12 months to more than £5million, with plans to recruit across all areas of the business and embark on a period of concerted growth by securing new clients right across the country. Both businesses bring a strong reputation for quality, expertise and operational excellence to the new venture which will seamlessly provide clients in the retail, leisure, hospitality, office, commercial and industrial sectors with a turnkey solution to installations and bespoke interior fit outs. The service will take ideas from vision to reality, covering the complete process from initial concept and design development through prototypes, production and manufacture, furniture and retail display selection and interior layout advice complete with comprehensive 3D visuals and flythrough animation to final installation and handover with warehousing, storage and refurbishment-related construction undertaken as necessary.

Despite initially doubling in size, turnover and service capabilities, customer satisfaction, attention to detail and a personal approach remain at the heart of every project for the newly merged team. Mike McVey will head up sales and operations for the new venture, drawing on his vast experience which includes Makro, Halfords and Manchester City Football Club (Kitbag) to name just a few past clients.Withboth companies established for more than two decades, First Install and Apex Joinery are renowned for excellence in their operating sectors; First Install delivering professional furniture installation and specialist fit out and Apex Joinery delivering high quality purpose-made joinery.

“Alongside innovation, safety and ergonomics they are also valued by our customers for their ability to optimise space, enhance productivity, drive down costs and enable more sustainable operation. We’d like to thank the UKMHA jury for this recognition.” www.combilift.com

Two of Combilift’s new electric powered products that have been showcased in Furniture and Joinery Production in recent issues - the Combi-FSE and the Combi-MR4 - have been shortlisted in the Ergonomics and Innovation categories respectively. The jury was also so impressed with the safety features of the 4-wheel 2-directional CombiFSE sideloader that they put this forward on merit for inclusion in the safety category.

The Archies Awards are known as the Oscars in the materials handling and logistics sector, and Combilift is therefore thrilled to have been nominated as finalists in no fewer than 3 award categories this year. Now organised by the UKMHA (United Kingdom Materials Handling Association) the awards honour the companies, teams and individuals in the industry who have innovated, raised standards and helped operators work more efficiently and safely.

The patented traction system in this new product plays a major part in ensuring the optimum performance of the Combi-FSE in all weather conditions. “The categories that we have been shortlisted in reflect some of the core characteristics of our products,” said Combilift CoFounder and CEO Martin McVicar.

The Combi-MR4 multidirectional reach truck incorporates Combilift’s new dynamic 360° ™ steering. Which provides unique 360° rotation on each of the 4 individual wheel sets, with two-wheel rear traction control, enabling seamless directional change of the truck while on the move, without the need to stop and change driving mode. This enables the Combi-MR4 to work in forward, sideward and crab steer mode guaranteeing swift operation and excellent manoeuvrability. The Combi-FSE – available in both 5,000kg or 6,000kg lift capacities benefits from Combilift’s most advanced steering system on its four wheeled trucks to date. The front steering axle sensors, linked to the Electronic Traction Control System on the rear axle enable the 2 independent 15kW drive motors to be controlled individually. The speed of each wheel is determined by the front wheel angle position, providing lower tyre wear, an unmatched turning angle and continuous traction at all times.

Leading independent kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturer J & J Ormerod, in Rossendale, Lancashire, has invested £250,000 in four new tractor units.

CNC World’s forthcoming open house will showcase on September 21st and 22nd will present its range of CNC router, plasma, laser, knife and waterjet machines – alongside its 3D printing machines – at its Dereham, Norfolk showroom. With Mark Rowe and Lorraine West at the helm, CNC World is the sole UK distributor for MultiCam Inc systems. At the open house event next month visitors will see live demonstrations of a range of machines with CNC World’s experts on hand to answer customers’ questions and application options.

MD Stephen Greenhalgh said: “As part of our policy of replacing our fleet every five years, we have just invested in four brand new state-ofthe-art DAF tractor units. “As we deliver to customers around the country and the drivers can be away for two to three nights, it is important that the cab and its accommodation is right. Part of our service to customers if that we only use our drivers to deliver our products and the customers appreciate the relationship that builds up with the drivers and that they are flexible to meet their needs.”

Holger Geesmann strengthens the Ninka management team

12 NEWS

He said it was essential for the company to have good, reliable and efficient transport stock. Transport manager, Brian Croisdale, started at JJO in 1998 working his way up from forklift driver to shunt driver, Class 2 driver to Class 1, assistant transport manager to department manager. He said: “We have 27 delivery vehicles, articulated tractor units, rigid lorries and vans. On Tuesday we will have a lorry in Peterhead in Scotland and another in Cornwall so we go the length of the country.

Holger Geesmann (55) has taken over the newly created position of general sales manager at Ninkaplast GmbH (Bad Salzuflen), the specialist for plastic moulding and surface finishes. Geesmann graduated at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in 1998 with a degree in engineering. The graduate mechanical engineer then worked successfully for many years in the supply sector of the furniture industry and therefore brings with him the necessary qualifications and experience to successfully carry out and further develop his new position as officer with statutory authority and member of the Ninka management board. With him, the management team of the company and the position of Ninkaplast in the market will be strengthened in the long term. Both the management and employees look forward to a trusting co-operation.

The vehicles are an excellent addition to the company’s fleet and have been praised by drivers, one, with 20 plus years’ service told his bosses his night in the cab was the ‘best night’s sleep’ he had had since starting at the company.

“No one wants to have vehicles that break down or need lots of repairs and maintenance. “This was also an opportunity for our lead driver Chris Fitton, who has been with JJO for more than 30 years, to help with the specification of the vehicles. The first journey out for the new vehicles was to Scotland and the feedback we had has been superb. The drivers report they are really comfortable.”

The company is also in a position to deliver machines from stock, and visitors will also be able to secure exclusive discounts at the event. The CNC World business was set up over 15 years ago after Mark had previously sold MultiCam Inc machines and Lorraine owning a machine herself. Lorraine decided to leave a previous role and buy her own MultiCam machine, setting up as a CNC machinist – so MultiCam is what we know. They were followed into the business by Mark’s two sons Jason and Justin, and more recently by two of his grandsons Haydan and Jordan who work across both sales and physically running some of the machines at our head office in Norfolk. CNC World provides cost effective, easy-to-use, programmable cutting, and additive manufacturing solutions for both large and small companies alike. www.cnc-world.co.uk

“In a week we complete around 1000 deliveries and clock up on average 20,000 miles a week. “As we became an Employee Ownership Trust last year, we all have a vested interest in purchases being good value for money, and this was my first opportunity to bring new vehicles into the fleet and I managed to make savings.

Stephen added: “Brian has a legitimate interest in saving the company money and by going the extra mile as it will benefit all the employees.”Lastyear, ownership of the nearly 155-year-old family-run manufacturer, with a main base in Bacup, was transferred to an Employee Ownership Trust. In March this year, the first payment bonuses were received by staff. million investment in new vehicles for J & J Ormerod

At the beginning of the year, Advanced Machinery Services opened its Wadkin Bursgreen academy with two trainers and now, eight months later they are going to have a new member in the training department. The new Trainer is going to cover the high demand of training courses in the London area and South of the country. One of the advantages that Wadkin Bursgreen academy offers, is a written quotation within 24 hours after the customer’s enquiry. As well as this, the customers can choose if they want the trainer to come to their workshop or have the training in the Wadkin Bursgreen academy in Leicestershire.SteveMcGloin, training director said: “Since we opened our woodworking training academy, we have been receiving more and more requests for training. We are very pleased to be receiving these enquires but, we need more trainers to cover all of these extra demands. We aspire to give the best service and offer closer dates to deliver the training as soon as possible”. Stephen continues: “Our intention is to have six trainers by the end of theTheyear”.Wadkin Bursgreen academy provides woodworking training courses for all the woodworking machines from novice woodworkers to trainers. The attendants can learn all about woodworking machines and ask all the questions to trainers with more than 30 years in the industry. Gary, Wadkin Bursgreen trainer said: “Some people in the woodworking industry still don’t know that by law, everybody working with woodworking machines must have an accredited certificate. We receive calls often asking if an experienced machinist can deliver training to the other operators and the answer is ‘no’. Unless the machinist has Train the Trainer accredited certification”.

The Wadkin Bursgreen academy started with the general woodworking training courses for novice, refresher and train the trainer. But now, you can get more specific training courses such as: – Profile moulder setting and operation training – Straight knife and profile grinding–Abrasive wheel safety – Chainsaw training courses Phil, the training manager said: “At Wadkin Bursgreen we work to deliver the best woodworking machinery training courses across the country. My goal as trainer is make sure that when I finished my job, all the operators know the risks and the right way to use them safely. I like to prepare and deliver interactive, interesting and useful courses.”Philcontinued: “We tailor every single training for our customers and I share my 30-year knowledge and experience with the students. want our attendants to learn and keep all the information to avoid accidents. Another thing that our customers appreciate is that we respond quickly to their enquiry and produce the certification as soon as possible because we know how important it is for them.” are looking for a place to your woodworking training, get the certificate for your new or want to know about the Wadkin Bursgreen academy, them

Microvellum’s platform can help you elevate your professionalism and improve your efficiencies when it comes to designing and drafting.

Design and drafting Producing submittal drawings, 3D models and presentation renderings for your projects can be a tedious task, but it doesn’t have to be.

Experience the design and function of your products with 3D modelling, rendering and other advanced visualisation tools. The platform combines the power of Microvellum’s product

Create a competitive advantage with a customisable woodworking platform

Microvellum, you can streamline your quoting, design, engineering and manufacturing processes with one platform.

That’s why Microvellum, a company specialising in AutoCAD-based CAD/CAM/CIM technology for more than 20 years, created a platform that can adapt to your specific processes, conforming to the way you want to quote projects, create drawings, engineer products and manufacture them. Leveraging a platform to optimise your process The days of chasing down project information from multiple software applications to complete a project should be over. However, many woodworking businesses still rely on disconnected software and manual workflows for each step of their process.

If you are using the same static cabinet software and product data as your competitors, differentiating your business from your competition can be challenging.

By leveraging

The AutoCAD-based design and drafting environment provides a familiar interface for those that already use AutoCAD. Professional 2D and 3D drawings can be created using a library of products that include instructions to automatically detail and annotate your plan, section and elevation views, saving you time and helping your team maintain consistency.

Quoting and planning Creating project quotes can be stressful but making them without knowing your true costs is even worse. Microvellum’s estimating tools are designed to make your life easier and enable you to quote your next project with confidence. The comprehensive quoting system allows you to include pricing and details for all of material and all your hardware, right down to the last shelf-pin and screw. You can easily adjust labour rates, material costs and factor in machining, edgebanding, assembly, shipping and installation times to your quotes – allowing you to create accurate reports that are designed the way you want to quote projects.

3D models from other applications such as Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks to create manufacturing data. For manufacturers that want the freedom to build custom products, Microvellum’s dynamic platform has the flexibility to exceed expectations. Manufacturing One of the most disconnected processes in many woodworking businesses today is the way manufacturing data is created. Often, relying on manual processes, or using a separate CAM software to create CNC machine programs, can result in human error or production delays.

The platform can also import and analyse

Microvellum’s manufacturing intelligence was developed to automate the design to manufacturing process. It seamlessly generates the optimized CNC programs from product lists or drawings for every machine in your factory –eliminating reliance on secondary software or manual programming. It helps you spend less time looking for information and asking questions, and more time getting work done. Reporting and project insights Microvellum’s platform stores all project data within a unified database – making it easy to access critical project data such as products, cut lists, materials, hardware, costing and other information needed for reporting purposes. The platform comes with many purpose-built reports you can customise, but also includes an integrated Report Designer tool that allows you to tap into the open database to access all your projects, products and parts across your entire organisation to create custom reports. 0800 680 www.microvellum.com0669

Engineering Most manufacturers have their own unique way of building products – whether it be construction options for certain cabinets, specific machining or even materials used for bespoke products. Without the right software, it may be difficult or time consuming to engineer products that meet your standards. Microvellum provides engineers with advanced tools for custom engineering of commercial and residential cabinetry, wardrobes and home organization products, office furniture, toilet partitions, interior fitouts, shopfitting, bespoke joinery, custom products and more. It allows you to take control of how your designers and drafters interact with the product data –letting you create custom interfaces, alerts and warnings, automated annotations and detailing, and other parametric features to products.

SCM’s first woodworking machine dates back to 1952. From that point onwards, a long history of global successes and acquisitions, first in wood-working and then in other materials. The Group has been led from the outset by the Aureli and Gemmani families.

The seventieth anniversary of the SCM Group, a global leader in machining technologies for an extensive range of materials and industrial components. The Group stems from SCM’s strategic vision that in 1952, saw the first woodworking machine produced in Rimini, establishing from that moment onwards, a precise mission: to offer the widest range of woodworking solutions at international level. Over time, the Group has developed technologies and taken over leading brands not only to complete all the processes involved in secondary woodworking but also in advanced materials, plastic, glass, metal and marble. A long success story that has resulted in today’s figures: €750m turnover in 2021 (90% exported abroad), over 4000 employees and a direct and capillary presence around the globe. It has been led from the outset by the Aureli and Gemmani families. SCM’s origins The Group’s history dates back to 1935, when Nicola Gemmani and Lanfranco Aureli, experts in mechanics and foundry work, started working together. In 1952, the first woodworking machine was created, L’Invincibile, designed by the engineer, Giuseppe Gemmani, Nicola’s son. This machine, which in the eyes of the founders had to be special, much simpler and more practical than those already on the market, managed to meet the needs of a market in the throes of a building boom and capable of every kind of furniture. SCM quickly created a complete range of woodworking machines that paved the way to conquering all the global markets. In the 1960s, Adriano and Alfredo Aureli, Lanfranco’s children, joined the founders. Together with Giuseppe Gemmani they led and expanded the company even further with the opening of directly controlled branches across the globe. In 1976, SCM developed the first machining centres and systems for solid wood windows and doors. In the mid-80s, they started acquiring well-known brands in different wood-working environments, that would consolidate the company’s global leadership: Mahros for automation systems (1984), Minimax for woodworking (1985) and at the end of the ‘80s, Gabbiani, Dmc and Morbidelli, leaders respectively in sizing, sanding and cnc panel machining centres. In 1992, the Routech brand, that marked the entry of SCM into the timber construction industry, and Stefani, an international pillar in edgebanding, were absorbed into the Group. In the years that followed, thanks to the development of other leading technologies and other acquisitions (Superfici in 2004, CPC and Sergiani in 2006, Celaschi in 2007), the Group further expanded its range to cover all the production requirements in the industry.

The research and development investments are another pillar: “Not only do we set aside 7% of the Group’s annual turnover for R&D - continues De Vito - but we can also rely on an Innovation team with multi-disciplinary skills that allow us to have an open, forward-thinking approach that goes beyond the specific applications of our sectors, once again to the full advantage of the customer.”

In seventy years, SCM has managed to establish an increasingly more direct and capillary presence internationally. How do you keep a global team united? Once again, De Vito is in no doubt: “With a very strong team spirit; the same one that allows us to continue along our growth path with a convergence of objectives that is not automatic, even in the most difficult times as has been the case in recent years during the pandemic. The centrality of the customer and a human as well as smart approach, are the values that guide us in our daily work in the industrial plants in Italy and the branches abroad. As well as this, we would like to continue to be open to collaboration and partnerships in every field (research, information technology, training, sales support, technical support, etc.) keeping customer value as our key goal.”

SCM Group is a global leader in technologies for machining a wide range of materials and industrial components. Across the globe, the group’s companies act as highly reliable partners to leading industries in a wide range of product sectors, from furniture to construction, automotive to aerospace, and yachting to plastic machining. SCM Group coordinates, supports and develops a system of industrial excellence in three large highly specialised production centres in Italy, with a turnover in excess of 750 million Euro, with 4,000 employees and a direct presence in all five continents.

The investment plan places sustainability in first place both for internal processes as well as products and services, “to offer the customer solutions that reduce the space occupied in the factory, machining times and margins of error, and keep down costs linked to energy consumption and waste of resources and material.”

‘We aim to be even closer to our customers with highly personalised solutions, tailored to suit their specific requirements. SCM is taking a further step in that direction to guarantee even more direct contact, from consulting and sales to after sales’

Stability, internationalisation, innovation and people: the values that have always been a part of SCM Group, as much today as in the past.

>>

Despite current uncertainties linked to the rising costs of raw materials and energy, SCM continues to invest even in its plants in Italy.

An SCM production line at Rimini

Luigi De Vito, SCM Division Director and Group General Manager has no doubts about their main objectives: “We aim to be even closer to our customers with highly personalised solutions, tailored to suit their specific requirements.” SCM is taking a further step in that direction to guarantee even more direct contact, from consulting and sales to after sales. De Vito continues: “To us, this means offering continuous and more valid support to our customers; fully understanding and anticipating what they really need, as well as providing even more pro-active recommendations.”Inordertoachieve this, SCM is investing in the skills of its global team, on the technical, sales and after sales side, and the Group’s training Campus centre is playing a key role in this.

SCM’S strategies: customer oriented SCM proudly celebrates this prestigious 70-year goal of accompanying the customer through each of the processes linked to the world of panels, solid wood, timber construction and woodworking.

“We are increasing the production capacity of our industrial sites that currently record an average production of 20 thousand machines per year. As well as expanding surface areas, we are carrying out modernisation work - like the work currently ongoing in Rimini - to achieve more eco-sustainable spaces congenial with our human resources. Another important driver is the digitalisation of our production lines, that sees the spread of lean processes and FCS (Factory Control System) control systems in the various plants, in line with Industry 4.0 requirements. The aim is to improve industrial organisation by enhancing integration of the factory with the IT systems”Lastbut not least, investments in foreign sales branches as was the case with the renovated SCM North America branch in British Columbia (West Coast), in Canada and the opening of new branches in India and Turkey, to guarantee a more direct and capillary presence on strategic markets.

For SCM, all this translates into digital and connected technologies designed for more efficient, sustainable factories; IoT systems that allow the customer to preserve and enhance their technologies throughout the entire life cycle; tools, such as the new My SCM portal, enabling a vast range of services to view, gather and analyse all the information on production performance in real time; a Service team that can deal more simply and effectively with cases, providing faster answers and “how to” solutions to guide customers in a knowledge sharing logic.

Simultaneously, the Group is upping its digital transformation process on two levels: internally, renewing organisational and international models with the customer throughout the customer’s journey, and at a level of the product and services offered “to be even closer to their business needs and jointly study the best strategy for smart manufacturing.”

SPECIAL FEATURE Fittings Components&

For some time now, consumers have been demonstrating a renewed confidence to invest in products which look and feel special, and perform enjoyably well in everyday use.

I hope you enjoy the special feature on fittings and components.

Taking the kitchen for example, the average consumer will want to create just the right look for them that performs as good as it looks – and savvy consumers who really know what they want and are less inclined to settle for second-best.

Taking a cursory glance the quality of finished products designed and produced by furniture and joinery manufacturers today is to bear witness to a level of sophistication, finesse and elan that our 70’s and 80’s forebears would find both incredible and hugely impressive.

In short, since the 90s, the democratisation of design and performance regarding fittings and components has elevated furniture and joinery designs to new highs to the point where these things have come to be expected, even from modestly priced furniture and joinery.

Comment

The last 20 years has seen a vigorous and renewed appreciation of our living spaces and we want our furniture and joinery to reflect that higher ambition, and to perform better than it ever has done. No respectable kitchen today comes without a slew of well-designed fittings and components: from high-performance often damped hinges, superb soft-closing draw slides, luxurious lighting options, an endless range of handles and knobs, a choice of amazing worktops in so many different looks and feels – and the end products, designed correctly, can be a show-stopper.

FITTINGS & COMPONENTS 35

So when it comes to investing in that desirable considered purchase, it will be one with excellent fittings and components, for we all know that higher-specification kitchens (and bathrooms) sell houses, so generally it is being seen as a safe investment – and long may that continue.

JET PRESS prides itself on giving customers the right solution. That sometimes means looking closely at the application and suggesting alternatives. Kevin Parr, the JET PRESS furniture industry lead, did exactly that recently for a customer. The customer in question makes trolleys used in hospitals and currently utilises a combination of bonding fasteners and weld nuts from JET PRESS’ sister company, Components Direct. Kevin visited the business and took a close look at its application. He came up with a recommendation using Rivet T-Nuts that would improve the quality and longevity of the finished product. Not a big sale for Kevin –but a great result for the customer. “Now is a very good time to buy a T-Nut insertion machine,” says Kevin. “Thanks to the Super Deduction tax break for financial year 2022/2023, you can save 25p off your company tax bill for every £1 you spend on a T-Nut insertion machine from JET PRESS. “For instance, if you spend £8000 on a floor-standing insertion machine you can save £1976 off your Corporation Tax Bill. You should take advice on how you finance your purchase to ensure you get the tax break. “If you invest more – in a Drill, Drive and Rivet T-Nut machine for instance – you can save even more on your tax bill. JET PRESS supplies a range of floor-standing machines, table-top machines and T-Nut insertion hand tools.”

The introduction of the Peanut insertion machines has made the components more accessible to small and medium sized businesses. Companies who wish to increase their production, add end-boring capability, reduce assembly time while creating strong and invisible joints (all at a fraction of the cost of other fasteners) are now able to do so.

IF’s Peanut Connecting System’s range of connectors and accessory products cover all areas of furniture construction; from the single carpenter using the hand-held jigs to companies withCNC machines. With the introduction of the insertion machines, small to mass-producing companies are able to utilise and benefit from this fantastic system too. Visit the IF website for full details of all components in the range - Peanut 1 for 3-axis CNC machines, the invisible Peanut 2 and 3 for jigs, boring and insertion machines and the invisible Peanut 2 Short for jigs and boring machines – along with information on all available accessories and the two new insertion machines. www.intelligentfixings.com

The end of August brought an exciting trip for Intelligent Fixings to the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta, USA. The Peanut Connection System has taken a quantum leap in recent months, culminating with the introduction of two Peanut insertion machines at the Fair! Intelligent Fixings’ collaboration with two major woodworking machine manufacturers - the German manufacturer Koch Technology, and the Italian manufacturer Omal Srl of Italy –have produced the perfect automatic insertion systems. The state-of-the-art insertion machines allow furniture panels to be machined with the innovative Peanut ramped key hole slot and then Peanut 2 or Peanut 3 components automatically inserted, producing furniture that can be assembled directly from the machine or flat-packed and then shipped to the end user to build on site. No clamping is required, the components self-clamp using the ramped key hole slot. The machines enable pendulum processing which maximises the working time of the machine, with one user processing hundreds of panels per day! The cost of the Peanut connectors is less than that of similar fasteners, so beautiful furniture with no visible connection is now an attractive and economical reality.

The development of these machines by Koch and Omal means they can now introduce the same technology into mass production lines. Excitingly, there are two market-leading furniture manufacturers currently looking to using the Peanut insertion machines for their production lines. Several machines have been placed on order even before their full promotion began! Intelligent Fixings, along with Omal and Koch, has been promoting the Peanut Connecting System and insertion machines across all social media platforms, including Youtube, Instagram and Linkedin. IF’s Youtube instructional videos have been particularly well-received.

Nuremberg’s summer special works hard to create a buzz At the one-off summer special event that was the combined Holz-Handwerk and Fensterbau-Frontale exhibition, in the heavy mid-July heat in Nuremberg, the focus was on meetings and networking face-to-face, finding solutions and checking out new and existing products and discussing the latest industry issues. The familiar trade fair pairing announced its return with a summer edition featuring over exhibitors from 33 countries. Over four days, the over 28,000 trade visitors from more than 100 countries discovered design and manufacturing trends in furniture, woodworking and in window, door and facade construction. The exhibition comprised some 13 halls – although whereas was a veritable hive of activity, Fensterbau Frontale was less so. The thematic highlights included: the new forum A Practical Guide to Digitisation for Craftspeople, with short Ted-style talks and product presentations on the digitisation of business processes; the creatively inspiring special show DesignObjekt – ObjektDesign by the FSH (Bavarian Carpentry Association), the Holz-Handwerk Campus as a showcase for vocational training colleges and other advanced training establishments; the government-subsidised Innovation Made in Germany pavilion, the Fensterbau-Frontale Forum, the special show Green Deal on carbon efficiency and protection against climate extremes, co-organized by ift Rosenheim and NürnbergMesse; the tenth Architecture Window Facade Forum, new Expert Talks and the inaugural MetallbauTREFF. At long last, it was also possible to hold after-hours gatherings again: kaking the most of the fine (very hot) weather, the window, door and facade community held an unforgettable party on the exhibition centre lawns, while Holz-Handwerk birthday guests celebrated the anniversary of their industry gathering, including a sizeable number who had visited all 20 rounds of the event. Supporting programme Alongside attendees on site, interested parties who were unable to travel to Nuremberg had the chance to take part in the Fensterbau-Frontale FORUM online as a live stream. The programme,

as well as the guided tours and Practical Guide to Digitisation for Craftspeople forum were recorded, and the sessions and presentations which remain available at: www.live.frontale.de/en Personal encounters, good conversations and live demonstrations “There was great excitement about this faceto-face reunion in the run-up to the event, and this was also reflected by the mood in the halls,” says Stefan Dittrich, director of Holz-Handwerk. “We heard a lot of people saying how glad they were to finally be back at a trade fair again. For the 20th anniversary round of Holz-Handwerk, ‘discover, experience, do’ was once again seen an apt description for a fair with such a hands-on atmosphere that can only really be experienced live and on site.” Exhibitors particularly praised the quality of the conversations they had as well as the number of visitors in decision-making roles with specific purchasing intentions. Participants used their time to get detailed advice and discuss concrete ideas and projects. “We are thrilled by the huge response and the loyal support for the trade fair format,” Stefan Dittrich continues. Elke Harreiß, director Fensterbau-Frontale, adds: “Every sector needs a gathering. At exhibitions, industry stakeholders get plenty of opportunities to meet numerous international decision-makers, acquire new customers, see what the competition is doing and close ranks with fellow professionals. Digitalisation, sustainability, the lack of skilled personnel, material shortages and rising energy prices are just some of the topical issues that dominated the discussions in the halls and various forums. With the next event in 2024, we will once again be offering our customers the ideal platform to discuss the pressing issues affecting their sector.”

Returning to its regular schedule, Holz-Handwerk and Fensterbau-Frontale will reconvene 19th-22nd March 2024.

Conturex Vario XS is the latest addition to the long-standing Contoured range

54 HOLZ-HANDWERK REVIEW

Conturex Vario XS

Epic safety technology Making its debut at Holz-Handwerk, Holz-Her’s revolutionary SafeDetect technology was demonstrated on its newly extended Epicon CNC range. The introduction of SafeDetect means the operator can benefit from free access to the machine even when it’s running at full speed because the space above the machine table as well as the area in front of the machine is monitored for all-round protection.

Taking centre stage at this year’s HolzHandwerk, Weinig Group exhibited a wealth of ground-braking technology on its 1600m2 stand. The interactive stand, which was shared with panel processing machinery specialists, Holz-Her, demonstrated over 30 machines and innovative software and digital solutions, including the brand new Cube 3 automatic planer and Conturex Vario XS. XS Machine, XXL Possibilities

3 Is the magic number The third generation plug-and-play Cube 3 has been designed to offer bigger time savings, even simpler operation and enhanced standard equipment for an even better price-performance ratio. The trusted model, which was first launched over a decade ago, also offers more flexibility than ever before with performanceenhancing features that can be retrofitted to the compact planer if/when your production requires them, unlocking the full potential of the machine. From automated stackers to return conveyors for safe one-man operation, your Cube 3 can be tailored to suit your production needs now and in the future, while always guaranteeing perfectly right-angled workpieces.

The Conturex Vario XS is the latest addition to the long-standing Conturex range and the most compact to date. Launched in response to current trends in the window market, the XS has been designed with smaller manufacturers in mind. Benefiting from the same advanced technology used on larger industrial models, the XS offers exceptional machining versatility while benefiting from a remarkably small footprint. It’s capable of working with lengths from 175mm to 4500mm, widths from 20mm to 330mm and workpieces up to 6m in length. It also features PowerGrip Motion 2D/3D software enabling complete processing in a single clamping procedure and full freedom of the X, Y and Z directions with no additional set-up, making it suitable for batch one and series production as well as just in time manufacturing.

New launches from Weinig at Holz-Handwerk

55 Laser lines projected on the floor in real time continuously show the operator the safe zone surrounding the machine head. If this is encroached, the machine will stop, keeping the operator safe. What’s especially impressive is that unlike a machine equipped with a bumper system that needs to run at a very slow speed and needs to make contact with the operator to stop, SafeDetect runs at full speed, reducing as it gets within 1.4m of the operator and stops fully when within 700mm of the operator. When safe to do so, it will continue where if left off. Dust and offcuts do not trigger the stop phase as radar technology is in play. Connect with Weinig Available as a web or mobile application, the Weinig App Suite offers a wide variety of functions to keep you informed, including machine monitoring, trending, OEE, individual notifications and various analysis options. The latest update, which was put to the test in Nuremburg earlier this month, allows interlinked machines, production lines, complete systems and even an entire factory to be operated fully automatically and digitalised from order entry to the end product. With each function individually assembled and selected via a modular structure of the functions, each Control Suite is tailored to the operator’s needs for the ultimate Weinig experience. www.weinig.co.uk

The recent Holz-Handwerk event in Nuremberg saw the official presentation a range of impressive new Salvamac Group projects and accomplished innovations. “We exhibited at Holz-Handwerk not only to confirm our choices, show our machines, share our ideas and meet our partners, as we have done in the past and how we will do in the future, but also to kick off our new Salvamac projects and products. Something greater, a reality that has its roots in our tradition, passion and in the conviction that there are people and interpersonal relations behind all this. A project that finds a turning point in Nurnberg.” With those words, Christian Salvador commented on the presentation of Salvamac Group at Holz-Handwerk, one of the most important international events for solid woodworking. Salvamac co-founder Ziemowit Dolkowski says: “Our growth has been greater than 50% in recent months and it was a success that we really did not expect! A success that has not only concerned traditional and already consolidated products but the entire production range and which has led us to the creation of something greater: Salvamac Group.”

A consistent catalogue focusing on automatic cutting lines, but also on semi-automatic cutters equipped with devices that make them real cutting centres. In Germany, the prime choice of the Salvamac optimisers, the Salvapush 2000 Windows pusher optimising saw, was presented with a brand new version of software for windows production that allows anyone to manage it simply and completely – as with a smart phone – with website graphics and all the practicality for setting data of a large touch screen, in digital communication among all electronic components. Not only that, the recent developments in barcode data import and the relative just-in-time management systems – from the development of the customer’s order to the finished product –make it a unique solution for production processes even in single batches.

Salvamac cross-cutting – solid, simple, safe

Flexible and cutting-edge technical solutions make it possible to communicate both upstream and downstream with company software management, thus creating fundamental principles of industry 4.0. The cutting range is also complemented by the Classic cutting saws characterised by the three esses of Salvamac’s philosophy: solid, simple and safe: – Solid because they are designed and made to work even in difficult conditions and of heavy wood. The structure is completely made of hard painted steel, very thick and very resistant

Salvamac continues to move forward in its social and ethical approach to production, innovation by creating a true and relevant group that is based on the support of four production units in three different countries – obtain a winning mix of Italian heads and heart with dynamics, advantages and the competences of national realities in strong evolution In this perspective, the Salvamac Group multiplies itself exponentially in three segments.

The cross-cutting part specialised in the cutting and optimisation of wood, the Air&Painting department where the suction, air filtration, the wood painting systems find the reference point and finally the brand new Salvamac Selection, a real innovation that will be the great natural evolution of the Salvamac project.

The

A real novelty that the creator Christian Salvador defines as: “Our network and its strength will allow us to introduce new products for the solid wood industry every month, high-quality machines, as in our history, but at a price that allows more companies to choose the technological path.

As in the past, the choice of this edition is to show customers and partners, the latest versions of the new Voyager and Grande filter.

“The strategy is clear: to optimise the process and use every possible ‘country advantage’ to produce machines with the highest quality and affordable prices for the customer: this is the reason for choosing the Salvamac brand: machines that are simple to use and with which it is easier to cut costs and increase profits.

– Safe thanks to the two-hand safety control in an ergonomic position and the blade protection cover that allows to work in absolute safety – Simple because the ease of use is increased by the new successful Salvastop 100 device, the evolution of the numerical control length positioning and stop system. It is the real solution to save labour costs, waste of productivity and decrease human errors and finally forget to use the tape measure. Ziemowit Dolkowski continues: “We have worked hard to create the exclusive software, very easy to use thanks to an immediately understandable and effective, complete, powerful and flexible graphics. It includes five different sections and two different modes –stop or push”. Also using a 7in-PAD touch screen, in an excellent position for reading and programming, not forgetting the included and installed Internet tele-service software.

‘The strategy is clear: to optimise the process and use every possible ‘country advantage’ to produce machines with the highest quality and affordable prices for the customer: this is the reason for choosing the Salvamac brand: machines that are simple to use and with which it is easier to cut costs and increase profits’

“A true network creation that gives the missing added value to our customers and to the whole wood industry. We are ready for the new challenge”

Salvastop can be installed on the Classic 40, 50 and Classic 60 models, substantially transforming the entry-level models into real semi-automatic cutting centres, made even more interesting by the possibility of interfacing them with the management software already available in the company.

Salvamac Air&Painting: suction and painting at the highest quality and with the highest safety Thanks to Salvamac’s 30-year presence on the market, always oriented towards high quality products, the company is already conquering positions on various markets, with an offer that – remaining faithful to the Salvamac philosophy – ranges from painting booths, equipped with innovative sandwich panels to provide greater resistance and devices that significantly reduce consumption, to the ‘do it clean’ sanding benches.

57

In addition to the Painting department, which includes perfect solutions for companies of different sizes and needs, we are able to offer ultra-robust and efficient portable vacuum cleaners, bag filters or cartridges, as well as complete customised systems. This is the mission of the Air department, all with the clear intention of exploiting the great potential of the internet with more traditional sales and assistance systems, always focusing on what the customer really needs.

As part of the Salvamac project at HolzHandwerk in Nuremberg, the third branch of Salvamac Selection will be set-up: a selection of different products with the same culture and philosophy that distinguish the company as an international company.

58 HOLZ-HANDWERK REVIEW Making its European exhibition debut, Lamello’s first battery powered Classic X and Zeta P2 biscuit joiners took centre stage at this year’s Holz-Handwerk. To date, the Zeta P2 biscuit joiner and Classic X biscuit joiner have remained firm favourites amongst furniture manufacturers and a chosen hand tool for those looking for a fast and effective way to join panels and solid wood. The new cordless range, which will available in the UK from September 2022, offers users the same level of precision and flexibility as its predecessor, without being restricted by the need for a separate power outlet. A full range of battery pack options were also on display, showcasing just how powerful and lightweight the new cordless range is.

www.lamello.co.uk Lamello:

Lamello UK’s Shaye Chatfield says: “708 exhibitors from 33 countries took part in the long-awaited Holz-Handwerk exhibition, with over 28,500 people in attendance. For Lamello, this offered the perfect stage for us to present our brand new cordless Zeta P2 biscuit joiner and Classic X biscuit joiner, whilst demonstrating the ease, strength and flexibility of our awardwinning P-System connectors range. It was also brilliant to see so many machinery manufacturers presenting our unique CNC connectors on their stands. We had fantastic feedback and the interest around our extended product offering was really strong.” making a connection

The award-winning P-System connectors were also on show, with live demonstrations of the Clamex-P, Divario-P and Tenso-P takng place throughout the four-day event. Leading machinery manufacturers, including Homag, Holz-Her, Masterwood and Felder were also demonstrating Lamello’s unique P-System CNC fixings on a range of three, four and five axis CNC machines. This presented visitors with unique solutions designed to increase productivity and reduce the production time and labour costs commonly associated with furniture manufacturing and assembly.

Taka have developed a range of PUR adhesives that has been completed in recent years to cover all processes in the furniture industry.

59

To continue our journey through the product range, we need to talk about panel finishing with roller coater, where we use products with longer open times than glues for slot nozzle application. In this range we have the TK2308.40 for processes with different kinds of foils and the TK2308.75 for working with thicker materials such as HPL in sheets. The latest addition in the TAKA range is the TK2308.33, which is suitable for both applications: the slot nozzle and the roller coater for foiling flat panels with thin foils.

Finally, to have a full picture of the adhesives for the furniture industry, we need to mention a product for edgebanding such the TK3308.20 or the TK3308.5 with a transparent glue line for edges of various kinds and colours. We have listed several products known for their high quality and performance in the furniture industry that can be used for various processes, but is this enough? Based on the experience gained by TAKA-WPR over the years, we can confirm that even the best adhesive, if not applied correctly, may not lead to a final product that meets the quality requirements of today’s market. The exhaustive experience of WPR (wrapping machines) and Taka (polyurethane hot melt adhesives) have lead to the creation of the WPR-TAKA ACADEMY to work alongside each customer to optimise production processes, choosing the most suitable adhesive and suggesting the correct parameters for the above process to help guarantee the best possible production outcome and high customer satisfaction. The WPR-TAKA Academy is always available for production audits and different training programs for both operators and production managers. TAKA-WPR will exhibiting be at SICAM in hall 10 booth A15. To find out more, contact the WPR-TAKA Academy at academy@wprtaka.it or their UK agent Anthony Rook from BRIT-AD LTD. 07484 341294 - arook.ba@gmail.com - www. britishadhesives.co.uk

Application is key: the best adhesive does not automatically guarantee high quality products

TK2308.38P for profile and panel wrapping, TK2308.25P for profiles with complex geometries or rigid films, and TK2308.25PV for CPL.The use of CPL has been increasing significantly in recent years in the production of interior doors due to its high scratch and water resistance, which in combination with the HMPUR glue, gives doors and jambs a very high durability.

Visitors to the four-day event could explore the software specialist’s new EOS product family for license and data management, online shop and e-commerce solutions, as well as CAD+T configurator professional. The configurator, which automatically creates engineering drawings, parts lists, price calculations and exports based on predefined parameters, was demonstrated on interactive screen during the show to highlight how it can be installed in combination with an e-commerce interface. Also making its European exhibition debut was CAD+T’s brand new contactless parts tracking software. Using RFID technology, it detects the presence, absence and assembly stage of all parts required to fulfil an order, whilst also identifying plan deviations and measuring processes of individual production for errorfree parts tracking and connected production systems.

60 HOLZ-HANDWERK REVIEW Whether you are a cabinet maker, shop fitter or an exhibition stand builder, individual design requires individual solutions. That’s where CAD+T’s extensive software solution portfolio comes in. Presented on its largest exhibition stand to date (measuring 60m2), visitors to this year’s Holz-Handwerk were able to explore the very latest design and visualisation applications, connected CNC/Nesting manufacturing software and complete ERP systems on CAD+T’s stand. Plus, brand new cloud-based applications set to enter the European market this year.

Martina Schwarz, CEO of CAD+T adds: “After such a long period of time, Holz-Handwerk was always going to be an important exhibition for the furniture manufacturing industry and it didn’t disappoint, with high footfall and good-quality discussions taking place on our stand. It was clear that the industry hasn’t been standing still during the pandemic. It’s shifted up a gear.

“For us, it was a brilliant event to display complete software solutions for the interior design and production industry and showcase the benefits cloud-based solutions can offer the furniture manufacturing industry and we are looking forward to the next edition in 2024.”

To demonstrate how simple it can be to integrate a Striebig vertical panel saw into your operational data flow, visitors were also given an opportunity to see Striebig’s latest optimisation software on its Compact and 4D models. ExpertCut allows you to take on parts lists from conventional CAD or ERP systems and optimise them directly at your office workstation. You can also use the program to process and manage orders, materials and parts lists quickly and easily.

Striebig’s brand new Optistock warehouse management module, launched at HolzHandwerk and part of the newly-extended ExpertCut system, is designed to help you manage your external remnant stock. During optimisation, remnants can be allocated to stock and recalled for processing when required. Optistock then adjusts the library of remnants, adding, labelling and numbering any new offcuts as they are created before allocating space in the stock. It is possible to book remnants out manually but Striebig’s Operator Station software, which works with a Windows-based PC, provides a simple graphic representation of remnants, making them easier to manage. Matt Pearce, managing director of TM Machinery adds, “Striebig is focused on creating and developing market-leading cutting solutions for the woodworking industry. It’s been a core part of the businesses for 60 years and the company continues to push ahead with new, ground-breaking cutting technology with all the hallmarks of a Swiss manufacturer. The new innovations on show at Holz-Handwerk are a great example of what’s to come from the world’s leading vertical panel saw specialist.”

Striebig’s brand new Optistock warehouse management module was launched at Holz-Handwerk for cutting large format panels up to 5000 x 2150mm that weigh up to 240kg. The new PAV system is also quick, offering an impressive feed rate of 5m/min under load and 10m/min without load.

64 HOLZ-HANDWERK REVIEW

Over the past few years, our company’s solutions have gradually become more comprehensive with the Palette Showroom

As a specialist for digitalisation in the skilled trades, Palette CAD is heading into the next chapter of the company development with the conversion from a GmbH (limited liability company) to an AG (public limited company). As from 25th July, the Stuttgart-based family business became Palette CAD AG after more than 27 years of existence. “Our success and our growth in the market show us that today more than ever we are the trend-setting digitalisation partner for the skilled crafts sector. Now we are joining forces for the next step towards the future of this sector,” says Walter Zinser, explaining the conversion to a public limited company. “Our recipe for success has always been our autonomy and independence in our work. This pillar and the family values of Palette CAD will therefore remain.”Today, Dr Zinser is the sole shareholder of Palette CAD AG and thus remains the company owner. Together with his daughters, Margarete Zinser and Dr Caroline Zinser, they constitute the supervisory board. “From now on, the future of the company will be shaped by a proven team of four. Chairman Volker Zeller will be in charge of organisation and finances, Frank Kobs of development and support, Dirk Böckstiegel of business development and export, and Elvis Grabic of sales and marketing,” says Dr Zinser, introducing the new company top management.

As director of sales and marketing, Elvis Grabic’s focus is on the market position in these very industry segments: “As an innovation leader, we maintain our market position in many areas of the skilled trades; in other segments, we want to successfully expand our brand. Our claim has always been – and will be even stronger in the future – to offer the best product for the needs of our users. In view of the increasing shortage of skilled workers in the skilled crafts sector, efficient, digital processes are therefore always at the forefront of our solutions.”

Conversion to Palette CAD AG – paving the way for the future

As the board member responsible for development and support, Frank Kobs believes that the continuous development of the product portfolio is crucial to guaranteeing end-to-end digital work processes in the skilled trades: “In the future, data fluidity will continue to gain importance in the market. Therefore, partnerships in the industry are even more important for us to achieve this and the associated smooth interfaces to ERP systems and other industry software. The Palette Cloud will also become more central in this context and increasingly simplify all areas of digital planning and collaboration.”

The aspirations for both the technological and economic further development of Palette CAD AG place increased demands on human resources management and corporate organisation, which are the focus of Chairman of the Board Volker Zeller: “For me, maintaining our management style and our corporate mission statement are of central importance. Our employees and their personal development, enjoyment and motivation at work have top priority. Of course, this also applies to the future workforce of Palette CAD AG, Because we are still looking for enthusiastic and talented people in many areas who want to work with us to take digitalisation in the skilled trades to a new level,” says Volker Zeller, describing the future course of Palette CAD AG’s personnel development. As Palette CAD AG, we specialise in 3D planning software for interior design and have been developing digital solutions for the skilled trades since 1994. From photorealistic 3D planning to the control of high-precision CNC machines in production, modern systems now seamlessly digitally map the entire craft process. Palette CAD is one of the pioneers and technological drivers of this development. With what is now our largest location in Esslingen, Germany, our company has been steadily growing on track for years. www.palettecad.com Passing the baton – Palette CAD is heading into the next chapter of the company development with the conversion from a GmbH (limited liability company) to an AG (public limited company)

A Midnight Dash

Earlier this year REHAU and Decorative Panels Lamination announced a new industry partnership. One which will see many benefits for both companies; increasing Rehau’s opportunity to sell laminated materials into the UK market on short, reactive lead times whilst allowing dp-lamination to add value to the product in terms of supplying the surface laminated onto board. The company is constantly adding to and evolving collections to enable them to keep their product offering up to date and relevant for customers. The latest RAUVISIO Noble Matt collection encompassing Noir HPLs and Brilliant Matt designs do just that and are the perfect addition to the dp-limitless range. Having been a customer of Rehau edging for over 20 years, the Decorative Panels Group have already established a great relationship. In recent years they have introduced their surface materials to their customer base starting with the RAUVISIO Crystal collection and have now expanded the offering to include the RAUVISIO Noble Matt collection. RAUVISIO Crystal Decor uses a 2mm transparent PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate) surface over a high quality impregnated digital print stone decor giving it a depth that looks like the real thing – be it wood or stone. Then there is RAUVISIO Crystal Mirror which has unrivalled light and flat reflection values that compare with a real glass mirror, but with half the weight and 10 times more break resistance.

RAUVISIO Brilliant Matt is available in eight colours and matching balancer. Perfect for vertical applications and harmonise excellently with RAUVISIO Noir HPL collection.

products available in a limitless number of possibilities. There is no commitment to purchasing in bulk and the offer is deliverable in quantities from as little as just one board. Detail is everything in this industry, and because Rehau scientifically test in lab conditions to meet or exceed the highest standards from the German kitchen industry – as set by AMK and TUV – this sets their products apart from others on the market. For example, there are other brands that offer vertical and horizontal surfaces in a soft touch with a scratch resistant surface. However, when you measure the light reflection at acute angles, some products on the market no longer look matt and you can see a reflection, as well as scratches not rubbing out with a sponge, or marks being left upon impact. None of these issues arise with the RAUVISIO Noble Matt collection. Trends have moved from high-gloss to softtouch matt surfaces and are now extremely popular and in demand from furniture and joinery manufacturers. The colour palette of the new RAUVISIO matt collection is perfect for the current market from the deep shades of After Dark, Olive Detour and Midnight Dash through to the contemporary take on greys and whites. Application includes doors throughout the home and all worktops including kitchens.

You can easily achieve the ‘all over’ trend within a kitchen using the matching horizontal and vertical finishes. Manufacturers want quality materials that can be sourced and processed easily, with a consistency that compliments their workmanship and allows them to offer a perfect finish on every product. Available now, the RAUVISIO Noble Matt collection is available from stock at Decorative Panels Lamination for nationwide delivery.

Durasein offers a hygienic and high-performance material that combines on-point design and accessible pricing, with ex-stock availability. Durasein added in a number of veined and concrete décors specifically with the kitchen sector in mind. If the past two years has taught us anything it’s that forward planning is key. Recognising current economic uncertainty, our portfolio will help kitchen companies should they need to branch out into other joinery projects such as bedroom and box room renovations and media units. The solid colours in Swiss Krono’s 25mm thick panels are ideal for creating dressing tables, desks, open shelves as well as wardrobe and storage units that maximise space. Swiss Krono One World panels in Ballet Slipper Pink (above) have been used here to create floor to ceiling wardrobes which make full use of the available space in this bedroom alcove. Responsible sourcing has long been an important consideration for furniture manufacturers and consumer demand is growing too, with more people wanting to take responsibility for their own personal impact on the planet. One World is an ideal product range for furniture manufacturers to get on board with. Swiss Krono is completely unique in producing the core board for the collection from 100% virgin wood material which meets and exceeds standard requirements from both FSC® and PEFC™. This ethos is mirrored by IDS and our entire product portfolio is compliant with European Timber Regulations, ensuring that customers have access to FSC® or PEFC™ certified options in each of our wood-based product categories.

We all know how much the pandemic and COVID-19 lockdowns impacted on how we lived and worked, and even though ‘normal’ routines resumed some time ago, we now have a greater appreciation for well-designed homes than ever before. Our homes were our sanctuary in those unprecedented times, and they also served as temporary workplaces, schools, gyms, bars and more. We continue to see the impact of these changes reflected in furniture manufacture, as homeowners continue to invest in, improve and future-proof their homes. The rise in home and hybrid working has naturally led to more people wanting to create home office hubs. Pictured here (left) are Swiss Krono boards in Toffee which have been used to create a large desk area and an adjoining storage unit built into the recess featuring open shelving and ample cupboard space for office items. In commercial offices too we’ve seen an upturn in companies investing in new furniture to welcome staff back, and there has been a move towards solo furniture instead of collaborative zones taking into account social distancing. In kitchens, flat panel doors have been a growth area with kitchen furniture makers moving away from bought in doors and instead recognising the cost engineering benefits of sheet material. We’ve seen growing demand within the Swiss Krono One World collection with plain colours and the more stylish prints being strong sellers. Reflecting the ongoing trend for bold, dark shades in kitchen design, there’s been greater interest in indigo, navy blue, dark greens, red and terracotta panels in addition to the everpopular whites, greys and neutrals. Pictured here (below) are Swiss Krono panels in Vetro Green which have been used to create a variety of sizes in flat-panel cabinets and to clad the large island unit. Complementing this, the premium Durasein solid surface range has recently been extended with 20 new designs which are ideal for creating worktops, island units and cabinet fronts.

A brand-new design experience has been switched on in Leeds and Lawcris is the one chosen to bring this vision to life. As soon as the lights go on, a very different, immersive installation awaits at Lawcris to promote Kronospan in a way never seen before in the UK. In addition to its LED-lit displays that immediately trigger the senses, its vibrant interior and unique presentation of the décors allow customers to visually and interactively experience Kronospan’s colourful portfolio. It’s a space where digital meets reality. Lauren Barker, head of marketing, explains: “We wanted to avoid the white, sterile, unnervingly open, noisily tiled, big echoing gallery concept which is so uncomfortable for customers to work in. We have created a fun and compact space where everything is close to hand. It has an enticing flavour of a comfortable loft layout. Customers can scatter their projects on the table, pick out large-scale door size samples, compare, contrast, mix, pile up and get more! Lauren continues: “Customers have never had the opportunity to see the Komplete Kollection in this way before. Customers are flabbergasted when viewing them on a larger scale for the first time. Décors such as the Flows and the Grange Oaks cannot be fully appreciated in an A4 format – to see them on a larger scale really changes everything. There are even routed slits in the table which allow customers to slot boards right next to each other and walk around to see how the light bounces off the surfaces. The addition of natural light really helps in the decision process when looking at contrasts and combinations.”

Kronospan have come a long way in the last four years. It is not only Lawcris’s design space they have invested into, Kronospan have spent more than £250m on their UK manufacturing base. The factory has been comprehensively upgraded, streamlined and future-proofed and the changes are evident everywhere. Part of this investment has gone into a brand-new cleaning line for their chipboard production. Dean Carroll, head of procurement, reveals, “We were invited to Kronospan in Chirk, near Wrexham, to see these developments for ourselves and came away speechless. Kronospan use a very high percentage of recycled timber in their chipboard, and this gives materials such as metal and stone the chance to be processed alongside the chips. “These unwanted items have tarnished Kronospan’s reputation in recent years. It’s been a hard sell to customers. However, since the new cleaning line was launched, things have most definitely changed. The technology is jaw-dropping to witness and is astonishingly efficient. Hearing the positive feedback from the market, I truly believe that customers can now have the confidence to buy the board once again.”Lauren concludes: “Kronospan’s ambition is endless. The major step to introduce brand new state-of-the-art technology to clean their recycled timber, alongside their investment into a new design space for the north, plus the exclusivity of their décors, is a significant transformation from a Kronospan of ten years ago. For the UK market, these changes have set the bar extremely high and boosted Kronospan onto a whole new level.

“It has such an appealing vibe. People are using the space as a unique extension to their own office. It’s a room where the doors can close and the worry about disturbing anyone is extinguished. Customers can play their own music and there is no fuss from our sales folk, well, unless they want it. We are truly blown away with the feedback we have had so far. For me as a marketing manager, working with Kronospan, who have devoted so much time and money into this space, has been truly worth it.”

One thing that is for certain is aside from the stringent measures too ensure this product remains 100% recycled, the design and the aesthetic are always at the forefront of this stylish product. It is clear to see that the passion has been carefully intertwined into the designs and finishes of this unique range, all of which started with the founder Mauro Saviola who pursued and believed in his ideas until they became a reality. Today’s mission statement is a strong and clear message: “We are today a real and worthy example of Circular Economy. Staying faithful to our story first and foremost continuing to do business with the greatest respect for the environment through eco-sustainability and a recycling ethic.” Saviola is able to recover over 7.2 million tonnes of waste wood across their network centres, a process that allows more than 70,000 trees to be saved every day. Panelco and Timbmet are proud to partner with this incredible innovative company which fits perfectly within their collective focus. The Trend-A-Porter UK collection is available from stock offering a carefully selected range of designs. The decorative elements combined with unique textures make this product a real stand out. Perfectly designed for the furniture and interior market this collection really gives an exclusive feel. Artistic patterns, rustic authentic woods, cracked burnt structures, elegant lines, natural sensations and marbling effects are just some of the styles you can expect to see. HPP gives timeless Shaker-style beauty a contemporary twist Bradn new to the range, the Halstead features a slimmer 60mm profile and a raised centre panel 80

“We first started supplying the slimmer Shakers as special-order doors, but the demand has grown to such an extent we think it is the right time to include them in the range. The demand is coming via the retailers, and it’s being driven by people seeing the contemporary look on places like Instagram.”

The Shaker-style takes its name from The Shakers, a religious sect first formed in England in the 18th century but whose members later fled to America to escape persecution. It is renowned for its minimalistic characteristics and clean lines. All the new additions will sit in HPP’s Aspire vinyl-wrapped range and will be available in solid, glazed, and angled options. Aspire door are all made-to-measure as standard. Chris adds: “For me, the market still feels very positive. For example, when we look at orders that have been received over a weekend through our online ordering system, it’s still very buoyant.

HPP’s ever-popular Caraway, Johnson and Shaker doors, all part of the Aspire range and all featuring a traditional 90mm outer profile, are being complemented by the new range reflecting the increasing demand for a slimmer profile –sometimes nicknamed skinny Shakers.

HPP sales manager Chris Essex says: “The Shaker style is a huge part of the market at the minute. We’ve seen that with our Caraway door, for example, which is proving hugely popular; they’re included in almost every other order. When you look at that with the modern twist it is very contemporary.

Treviso has a 60mm slim profile based on the Caraway style door, which is a solid one-piece outer frame with an angled recess to the centre panel.

A growing trend for a contemporary twist on the Shaker-style door has prompted Hill’s Panel Products, the Oldham-based board, doors and fittings manufacturers and suppliers, to build on its range of timeless Shakers to create four new, modern doors – including one completely new style.

Established in 1980 in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, Exorna Kitchens & Bedrooms has recently invested in three new HOMAG woodworking machines – a DRILLTEQ H-600 CNC processing centre, a SAWTEQ B-300 beam saw and an EDGETEQ S-500 with XES 200 glue unit station and boomerang return system. These latest additions to the company’s plant list take its total number of HOMAG machines to eleven. “We’ve been investing in HOMAG machinery and software since the early 1990s,” explains Exorna Kitchen’s director, Andy Oliver. He continues, “Not only has it proved to be the most technically advanced and reliable machinery we’ve ever had, but it is all controlled using the same intuitive woodWOP software. That’s a real benefit for our operatives who can quickly adapt to and use the different machines because of the woodWOP software commonality.

“After a production interruption, it then preheats the glue application unit to minimise downtime before use. Also, cleaning or glue change can be done automatically without interrupting production on the edge banding machine.

Exorna Kitchens invests in three new HOMAG machines

The only issue with PUR glue is that there can be challenges involved in processing, particularly if there are extended interruptions to work, such as overnight or over the weekend, when the glue can go off. To avoid this Derek Reid recommended Exorna invest in the HOMAG XES 200 glue station which provides several benefits as Reid explains: “It’s a compact little unit with a footprint of less than 1m2. The XES 200 stores the glue application units in a vacuum; this delays the bonding time so that the PUR glue does not harden.

Exorna’s HOMAG EDGETEQ S-500 edge bander

Installations84

‘These production benefits were really important for Exorna because one of the key performance requirements for the new edge bander was to significantly increase output capacity and quality’

“Our latest EDGETEQ S-500 is a case in point. We were looking for an edge bander that would increase our output capacity whilst at the same time enable us to take advantage of the benefits of PUR glue. PUR provides an almost invisible glue line between the panel and the edge tape; it is also much more resistant to moisture and has higher thermal resistance properties, so it’s ideal to use in the manufacturing of kitchen cabinets and work surfaces.”

“Over the years, we established an extremely strong relationship with Derek Reid from ElectroTech Machinery who represents HOMAG here in Northern Ireland. Derek’s knowledge of both HOMAG equipment and our own business means he can help us identify the exact machinery for our needs, each with precisely the right specification of options.

The DRILLTEQ H-600 has increased output three and a half times for Exorna

“These production benefits were really important for Exorna because one of the key performance requirements for the new edge bander was to significantly increase output capacity and quality. The XES 200 glue unit, along with the boomerang return system for the EDGETEQ were vital components in helping them achieve this.”

85

“Another benefit with HOMAG equipment is the way it holds its value; this is probably more important to us than return on investment. As a business, we depreciate all our machinery using a 20 % reducing balance method and when we sell the HOMAG machinery it is always worth far more than the book value would suggest.

“Replacing ageing machinery also has an impact on energy consumption. All the latest HOMAG machines have been engineered to minimise the use of power. Given the way energy costs have risen this year and are predicted to continue to rise, the energy efficient running of the HOMAG machines definitely has a positive financial benefit to Exorna.”

“The addition of the new HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 panel dividing saw means we now have three saws in the business. As well as increasing our cutting capacity, its extremely rugged pressure beam means we consistently achieve first-class cutting quality. The SAWTEQ B-300 also has a very compact footprint for such a high performance saw, so it was relatively easy to plan into our facility.

The service HOMAG offers in Northern Ireland via Derek Reid and Electro-Tech Machinery is first-class, and one we can always rely on for help whenever it is needed,” concludes Andy Oliver.Fora demonstration or further information on HOMAG woodworking machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424 or email info-uk@homag.com. www.homag.com

Local service from the global brand leader “Finally, one of the most important factors for us in selecting a machinery supplier is the local service levels they provide. It is vital that any supplier has a first-class local service set up so we are never left in a situation were our machines are out of action for long periods.

Replacing aging machinery and increasing capacity Exorna invested in the HOMAG DRILLTEQ H-600 CNC processing centre as a replacement for an aging Italian CNC and it has had a big impact on production as Andy Oliver enthuses: “The HOMAG DRILLTEQ has been a huge success, increasing production capacity by about three and a half times. What’s more the accuracy and quality of processed pieces are superb.

The very well-ordered Nicklin Furniture Ltd has completed an improved production set-up for its panel-based furniture and joinery production business. It’s latest acquisition – a Kündig Brilliant sander – has proven to be a gamechanger. John Legg visited the Tyneside business to see how they were faring. Nicklin’s oblique sanding option delivers productionimprovedquality 86

The owner, David Nicklin, welcomed me to the business by looking back and talking openly about a crossroads for the business when it had shown good growth – but with the attendant extra equipment, space and staff.

INSTALLATIONS 87 >>

“As you see the business today, it is distinctly different in how we organise the way we work compared to our recent history,” David explains.

Arriving at the modest unit on an ordinary small industrial estate, visitors will undoubtedly be impressed by the high level of organisation, craftsmanship and dedication to excellence found within. The best way to get an overview of the business is to go straight upstairs to the showroom and design department – all comfortably and professionally fitted out –which overlooks the smart production set-up on the shop floor below.

“I had a design degree, and went to work in London, didn’t like the office life, came back up to Newcastle, and I literally started doing odd jobs – that was my introduction to this business. I soon set up the company in 2008 with no real ambition to grow it, and a few years later, here we were with a double-the-size facility (compared to the current set-up) with a tiered management structure of project managers, foremen and craftsmen – but looking closely at the figures, it wasn’t so great. So by 2017 it had become clear that this was not as efficient as when I started the business, things had to change.”Thestyle of the business required an intervention to a simpler, clearer work flow,

David Nicklin with the crowning acquistion to his company’s revitalised production process – the Kündig Brilliant sander

The showroom and the design team area has a clear overview of Nicklin’s impressive production floor

Situated on the northern banks of the river Tyne in Newcastle, Nicklin Furniture Ltd is an impressive and well-disciplined furniture and joinery manufacturer with a renewed and efficient business model dedicated to creating fine, bespoke interior products for its clients in London, UK and across the world. Nicklin designs and crafts bespoke furniture and interiors, to clients directly or via interior designers who typically know what they want, recognising standards of quality and service which stand apart from the norm. With over a decade of experience operating within the most demanding interiors market, the company has a thorough and practical understanding of the issues and challenges faced for projects ranging from a single piece of premium quality furniture to whole home fit-outs, all craftsman-made in Newcastle. Every aspect of Nicklin’s service from assessment to design, production, implementation and aftercare is tailored to individual requirements.

The compact footprint belies the Brilliant’s stellar capability with its game-changing 10° oblique head

The design team’s glass-fronted crow’s nest office overlooks the equally splendid and incredibly neat and well laid-out production floor. The key hardware includes a CNC, an edgebander, a panel saw, a surface planer, and various small classical machines – and the company’s latest acquisition, a Kündig Brilliant wide belt sander.

David says this scenario effectively replicates the early phase of his career, which was, and still is, proving to be a much more efficient way of working when focused on high-end bespoke work of this nature. “The purchase orders, materials in … it’s all booked in by a person rather than a system, there’s a real sense of engagement, ownership and responsibility. Then all the little nuances that you need with bespoke work are dealt with by a human, not a system … because that simply doesn’t work,” says David.

The business now has two main sections to its production, a panel processing area, which is where the Kündig machine comes into its own, and there is the traditional joinery work. According to David, most elements of the company production have been robustly invested into in order that the company can efficiently cope with all manner of production requirements.

88 INSTALLATIONS with a smaller workforce, and a smaller factory footprint with individual job management –anything ranging from a single cabinet to the entire floor of a house – being managed directly by an individual.

>>

Although the company’s production process is managed by individuals on the shop floor, in many ways Nicklin’s process is linear and directed by the design team. “We say: clientcomponent, component-client,” says David, “this means that our design team is responsible to the components – we don’t have production guys correcting design issues, these are sent back to the design office and this actively improves their skill levels and keeps client communications consistent.”

“With all the areas of production newly sorted with fresh investment, the sander is proving an absolute linchpin in our drive for process efficiency – and we thought long and hard about what we needed and what we would go for.“When we researched sanders, we looked at getting the process perfectly right, and we unanimously agreed that components cannot be almost-done, they must be done right, first time. This was agreed despite the fact that many suppliers we spoke to said that “it’ll be alright – yes, of course there would be some re-working, touching-in and so on, but everybody doesDavid’sthat!”response to that was clear: “If you can’t ‘With all the areas of production newly sorted with fresh investment, the sander is proving an absolute linchpin in our drive for process efficiency – and we thought long and hard about what we needed and what we would go for’

Whilst Kündig machines are more expensive than similarly specified sanders, only Kündig comes complete with a 10° oblique sanding unit – and, say it quietly in these cash-strapped times, that additional investment makes all the difference. In fact, it makes the Brilliant a bit of bargain.“Although the machine only operates at very low hours for us, that’s almost irrelevant,” says David, “it’s still utterly integral and an important gain for our production process. “Previously, where all our guys had their own dedicated orbital sanders, extractors and sanding discs, I reckon there’s maybe just one left here now, and it’s hardly ever required. Almost without exception, components that pass through the sander go straight through to the spray shop.”

“We visited Carl at Kündig Ltd for a demonstration before we ordered our machine and it was a concise and informative demonstration. It just did what Carl said it would do, and I didn’t want or need a long, drawn-out demo … so we just went in and were there for about an hour, it was job done! To date it has performed exactly how we expected.”

WoodworkingInterestingly,Machinery.whenlooking for the right sander, David’s research was less about talking to manufacturers, but rather engaging with fellow users. With no disrespect to dealers and distributors, David firmly believes that hearing direct from fellow operators is the best kind of advice because they tell you the pros and cons without erroneous claims and distorted validations.

With the calibre of the work Nicklin produces, and the time pressures furniture and joinery production businesses are under, Kündig’s patented oblique sanding technology is clearly a major win for Nicklin, and clearly, Kündig is fast-becoming the go-to choice for operators who are focused on high quality and efficiency in their businesses Kündig’s Brilliant range offers the same features as the Premium series does, but contains at least one unit with its patented oblique sanding technology. In simple terms, Kündig’s exclusive oblique sanding technology instinctively acts the way experienced wood workers would do – through pivoting of the sanding unit, the sanding grit’s cutting ability and belt life improves and undesirable sanding traces that are typical for almost all wide belt sanders do not show on the work piece. Of course, other sanders will appear cheaper by comparison, but as many customers readily attest, pass the work through a Kündig sander and it gets the job done in a manner that few others can compete with. Especially so when you take into account the almost entire lack of remedial hand-sanding required for a perfect finish. With a Kündig sander, it seems a superior level of finish comes as standard. orderly production process using quality technology throughout, results in a superior finish that is the standard for Nicklin Furniture and their clients

Trust in HOMAG solutions

Responding to customer demand “From the company point of view, we are now more able to support our sales team who are being asked to make special products or enhance our standard items with real wood

Herman Miller extends HOMAG relationship with new new CENTATEQ E-310 edge bander

Founded in 1905 in Michigan, USA, Herman Miller is a design led office and home furniture manufacturer. The company’s purpose reflects the desire of all its brands to leverage the power of design to improve people’s lives – its mission is to pursue design for the good of humankind. In line with this, the UK division recently invested in a HOMAG CENTATEQ E-310 CNC edge bander with a powerEdge Pro Duo gluing unit.

Herman Miller extends HOMAG relationship with new CENTATEQ E-310 edge bander

“Our sales team was seeing an increasing demand for real wood premium edge finishing and our old process to achieve this was very rudimentary. It was labour intensive and had a high cycle time, making it very inefficient.

“The CENTATEQ E-310 CNC with the Pro Duo unit offers us the versatility of being able to produce real wood edged products in a one step process. At the same time, the same Pro Duo unit has a hot air facility giving us the ability to cost-effectively apply our standard edging as well.“For us, the hot air option on the powerEdge Pro Duo gluing unit offers a big advantage; it achieves a zero joint finish but with significantly lower running costs than our larger, high volume laser edging machines. This means we get the same high quality end product but with a much lower capital

“The E-310, however, stood out on its own due to its performance capabilities, lifetime value, accuracy and the quality of finished work pieces. And, because it is controlled with HOMAG’s woodWOP software, it was much easier and quicker for our operatives to become proficient running it. If we’d have bought another brand of machine it would have been much harder to get to grips with.

“The ethos of Herman Miller demands that every product we manufacture has to be premium quality, and to achieve that, we have to invest in the best machinery available,” explains the UK company’s Head of Engineering, Martin Waller. He continues, “Here in the UK we have been investing in HOMAG product for over 25 years and we now have six HOMAG models on our plant list. “Our latest asset is the CENTATEQ E-310 CNC edge bander with a Pro Duo gluing unit. There were two key reasons we wanted this machine: the first was to replace an ageing CNC from another manufacturer and the second was to provide us with the flexibility to offer real wood edge finishes in addition to our standard edged products.”

92 INSTALLATIONS

“Additionally, cost.this latest generation of head has a number of technical advances which produce a more accurate application of the edge tape, especially when it comes to butt joint features.”

“Although we are a single manufacturing site in the UK, globally as part of the Herman Miller group, we have over 30 HOMAG machines including many edge banders. This gives us a real confidence in the HOMAG brand and is one of the reasons we didn’t hesitate to invest in the new CENTATEQ E-310 CNC.

“Another benefit of the woodWOP software is that we program work remotely from the office and, because the CENTATEQ uses woodWOP, it is easy for our programming team to adapt to the new machine rather than having to learn something very different.”

Zero joint edges with HOMAG’s hot air system

“Because we spent a lot of time at the front end refining the specification of the machine and conducting performance trials with several potential machine suppliers, we knew exactly what the CENTATEQ would deliver. And it has not disappointed. In fact, based on the success of the E-310, we have ordered an additional HOMAG machine; the new machine is a five-axis CNC processing centre which is due for delivery in September. “Ultimately, HOMAG offers us a one stop shop. All the staff in the UK and Germany, are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Consequently, we have strong relationships with people in both locations, and they’re always on hand to discuss our needs,” concludes Martin Waller.Fora demonstration or further information on HOMAG woodworking machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424 or info-uk@homag.com. www.homag.com

Flexible training schemes “The training options from HOMAG are another plus point from our perspective. They give us the opportunity to ’pick and mix’ between different training methods to suit the operators’ skill levels.

93 edge banding. The CENTATEQ CNC gives us the capacity to fulfil this demand more efficiently.

“For the CENTATEQ E-310 CNC we sent two people to HOMAG’s Schopfloch headquarters in Germany for the full training, whilst three other operators undertook remote woodWOP training with HOMAG UK. This flexibility enabled us to maximise the training opportunities for our team.”

HOMAG’s powerEdge Pro Duo gluing unit

“What’s more, the UK government’s Capital Allowances – Super Deduction – currently offers 130% first-year relief on qualifying plant and machinery investments until 31 March 2023. This makes investing in new machinery very attractive, and we wanted to take advantage of this before it ends.”

‘Although we are a single manufacturing site in the UK, globally as part of the Herman Miller group, we have over 30 HOMAG machines including many edge banders. This gives us a real confidence in the HOMAG brand and is one of the reasons we didn’t hesitate to invest in the new CENTATEQ E-310 CNC’

The complete package from HOMAG “We didn’t buy the new edge bander on a ‘return on investment’ basis, rather it was a business continuation decision with the added flexibility that came with the performance capabilities of the Pro Duo gluing unit.

Founded in 1990 from a single branch in Anglesey, Huws Gray has rapidly expanded over the past 30 years to become the UK’s largest independent builders merchant. Through organic growth and acquisitions, most recently Ridgeons Timber Merchants, the company has expanded to over 100 branches across England and Wales providing a one-stop shop for trade and DIY customers. To help keep pace with its growing customer base, the Huws Gray looked to leading machinery specialists Daltons Wadkin for expert advice expanding its wood mill. A new purpose-built mill was constructed at the Huws Gray head office in Llangefni. Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin, visited the site to see what improvements could be made. Andy comments: “It was a pleasure to work with Huws Gray. A number of their existing machines were still fit for purpose, while others could benefit from upgrading to take advantage of more modern machining technology. We have vast experience working with local and national timber merchants supplying robust well engineered products from leading European manufacturers. Huws Gray already have a number within the group so were already familiar with their attributes. The Salvador SuperUp is continuing to prove very popular – safe 90° cross-cutting with retracting front guard. The Graule radial arm cross-cut again is again very popular for deep sections and provides versatility for angle cutting when needed”. As part of the turnkey solution, Daltons Wadkin worked with specialist extraction manufacturers, The Woodwork Dust Control Company, to supply a fully integrated LEV system to service the legacy and new mill machinery in compliance with COSHH regulations. Following successful installation of the LEV and machinery, the Daltons Wadkin ‘red team’ of trainers delivered certificated training for the Huws Gray machinists. A legal requirement for all machine operators, training courses are tailored to the individual needs of the learners with no power points – all training is hands on with practical assessment.

Intorex TMC automatic

The decision to invest in a new Intorex TMC came as result of increased demand for modern style contemporary designed twisted or stop chamfered spindles and newel posts. Whilst Cheshire Mouldings already have in place machinery to produce this type of product, the production output on the Intorex CNC is much higher thanks to the automatic hopper feed loading and the fact the parts can come off already finish sanded. The TMC which has nine CNC controlled axis is equipped with a horizontal shaping head, horizontal sanding head and a saw blade for turning. In addition there is a router head, with 10 position rotary tool changer. The machine for Cheshire Mouldings was also specified with the optional tenth CNC axis for a narrow vertical sanding belt for sanding turned parts. This specification of machine provides a high level of flexibility to produce a wide range of simple or complex shaped or turned stair parts. Totally separate to the TMC, the LNX CNC rotary sander was ordered to provide increased capacity for the sanding of turned balustrades. This machine has automatic loading, twin CNC controlled flat sanding belts, and brush back sanding units. To minimise manual lifting and handling the machine was equipped with a series of flat and inclined conveyor belts that means just one operator is able to both load the machine and also box up the finish sanded spindles.

comments: “It has long been our practice to invest in the very latest CNC equipment, and it is our belief that this is the only way to help satisfy the demands of our customers and also keep ahead of our competitors.” He adds: “We have worked with both Intorex and their UK agent JJ Smith for many years and as result they clearly understand our requirements, and are able to provide us with the correct equipment for the job. We are very pleased with both machines and in particular are excited by the new design possibilities the TMC CNC will give us.” 0151Smith548 working centre

To keep ahead of the rapidly changing UK market for windows, Essex based Mumford & Wood recently invested in the state-ofthe-art HOMAG CENTATEQ S-800 CNC machining centre. This windows CNC is the latest addition to the plant list of HOMAG machinery operated by the company. The advanced CNC is designed to increase output and productivity whilst maintaining Mumford & Wood’s reputation for quality and service to core customer groups including architects, developers, designers and owners of aspirational homes. “Over the last 10 to 15 years, the UK market for windows has changed dramatically,” explains Mumford & Wood managing director, Dion Panting. He continues, “The design of windows and the components used to make them have become far more complex, while batch sizes have become smaller, more bespoke and with much lower volume requirements. “Compounding these issues, is a lack of skilled labour throughout the construction and manufacturing industries. This means that house builders are reluctant to use just primed and unglazed windows onsite; they want fully finished windows ready to simply fit into the building. The latest CNC windows machining centres HOMAG has led the way in advanced CNC window machinery for many years and the company’s latest iterations, the CENTATEQ S800 and S-900 have raised the bar even higher. Phil Pitchford, HOMAG UK’s CNC specialist takes up the story, “When it comes to windows CNC machines, we view every sale as a project. We start the process with an initial meeting in Germany where we involve the tool and software suppliers to discuss the parameters with the customer.“Wediscuss all of the individual window profiles the customer wants to make and we evaluate all the tooling suggested by the tooling supplier to ensure suitability. “The next step is to make certain that the software team can program what’s required. This might sound obvious, but very few CAD|CAM systems on the market can drive a CNC windows machine because of the complexity of the process.

“We use our own woodWOP parametric software which has become recognised as the industry standard and, together with the tooling manufacturer and the customer, we prepare and test each window system on the customer’s machine, using their timber, tools and ERP output. Mumford have invested heavily in KLAES software over the years and it represents the backbone of their company.

“When Mumford & Wood go out and see a customer, they design the windows, cost them and the KLAES software provides all the timber, glass and ironmongery requirements etc., effectively creating a bill of materials for the job. Then, using the HOMAG interface, we merge the details into the woodWOP software to generate the individual component programmes to yield a fully finished workpiece. “Before we deliver a CNC windows machine to the customer we carry out one or two weeks commissioning at the factory using their tooling systems. Then we do the same when it’s delivered to the customer’s facility. It’s a lengthy process, but it pays in spades.”

100 INSTALLATIONS

‘The results we’ve achieved with this new machine have been outstanding. We even managed to process 270 components (pieces of wood) in one nine hour shift which is unheard of in complex window manufacturing. This is partly due to the the rapid load cycle of the machine’ CNC

Powerful and versatile production

“Add to this the flexibility of the machine, the output speed and quality, and the value for money, and it becomes clear why the decision to invest in this machine was relatively straightforward.“Aspartofour due diligence, we visited a factory in Germany which was operating a similar windows CNC and this gave us confidence that the machine would deliver exactly what we were looking for.”

Limited competition in the marketplace

First class training and support “The training and support HOMAG provides prior to and after the machine has been installed is first class. Once they’d trained our operators on the basics, they remained onsite for a further two or three weeks to make sure everything was working as it should and we were running at full production.

“Once we’ve loaded one table, that will start processing the work and at the same time we can load up the second table ready to run as soon as the first table finishes. This re-clamping in cycle eliminates a huge amount of the downtime you get with other machines and is why our throughput is so high.”

There are few manufacturers on the market that can offer this type of CNC machine or the level of service that HOMAG provides. Dion Panting again, “A major attraction to us was the extremely compact footprint of the CENTATEQ machine, the HOMAG service and the benefits of the proven woodWOP software.

“To improve the versatility of the CNC and increase the productivity, we specified both four- and five-axis heads for our CENTATEQ S-800. This enables us to use the power of the four-axis spindle for the heavy operations such as counter profiling and rebaiting. The 5-axis is then available as a second head that can spin over off the vertical and do any operation using the full power and spindle. “The results we’ve achieved with this new machine have been outstanding. We even managed to process 270 components (pieces of wood) in one nine hour shift which is unheard of in complex window manufacturing. This is partly due to the the rapid load cycle of the machine.

CNC BMB profile splitting window processing

“The benefits the CENTATEQ S-800 has delivered for us are many. Perhaps the most important is that every part comes off correct and finished to the premium quality standards we demand. Basically re-working is a thing of the past and because components are fully finished in one clamping, the risk of damaging each piece of timber during the manufacturing process is much less,” concludes Dion Panting. The system is incredibly user friendly and any one in the workshop can learn to use it in a very short time”.

Accurate and efficient face frames with Hoffmann at Truwood Products104

Truwood Furniture was founded in 1984 by Gordon Cook. In 1993 it moved to its current site and after humble beginnings is now supplying both traditional and contemporary rural designs to independent retailers and distributors, as well as direct to the trade. The Flintshire company based in Mold, North Wales, has been using the Hoffmann system for some 20yrs now. MD Gordon Cook is such an enthusiastic devotee that he originally helped Hoffmann UK MD, John Galvin, develop and fine tune the system. That system originally incorporated the Morsø guillotine alongside the Hoffmann MU2 to manufacture the perfect Face Frame joint every time.

The latest Guillotine is fitted with the Glide stop positioning system on the fence which gives Truwood instant and accurate setup times for different components. “It’s a superb system” says Gordon “which saves us significant time, is easy to use and 100% accurate every time. The guillotines will cut out joints, including haunch joints, in hardwood components that have been pre-moulded to include an integral cock bead. The perimeter and internal cross section of the face frame fit together perfectly and once the Hoffmann key has been inserted into the routed keyway slot the frame will have permanent and accurate structural strength and accept the cabinet door or drawer front as a perfect fit”.

Because all products end up being fully bespoke, the speed and accuracy of the Hoffmann system has been crucial to Truwood’s success. At the workshops in Mold, they operate two Morsø guillotines and still use the original Hoffmann MU2 router (now superseded by the greatly improved MU3).

Light woods are popular at the moment, because they have an inviting effect and are easy to combine. This is definitely true for the wood of Mediterranean stone pine with its elegant and at the same time rustic appearance. Ostermann supplies ABS edgings with stone pine décors in a wide range of variants - in addition to the classic version, there are many more colours and structures to choose from. In the past, stone pine was traditionally used for the masts of large ships. In living rooms, its warm wood tone and distinctly contrasted grain add a Mediterranean touch. However, the processing of the soft wood with many resin inclusions is not easy. High-quality décorative surfaces help circumvent this problem and still achieve a natural look and feel. At Ostermann, carpenters/cabinet makers will find matching ABS edgings. The spectrum ranges from a naturally light stone pine décor to almost white tones to grey, brown and even black variants. For the entire range, type in the search item “#Highlights06” on the Ostermann website www. ostermann.eu.

Cool Scandinavian colours: white Loft Pine and Jacobsen Pine blue The chic pine grain is extremely versatile and by no means only suitable for lovers of Mediterranean interiors. Those who prefer clear lines in Scandinavian style will find in the ABS edging White Loft Pine wooden structured an even lighter décor with a white base that combines particularly well with pastel shades or maritime blue tones. If you want to apply a delicate blue directly on the edge, check out the ABS edging Jacobsen Pine blue wooden structured. It shows grey and cool blue veins that harmoniously complement each other. Perfect for Scandinavian design!

Warm Mediterranean shades: Fano Pine nature The stone pine, also called Italian stone pine or, after its external shape, umbrella pine or parasol pine, is a subspecies of pine and its lightest representative. Due to its yellow tint, the wood appears warm and has a fine appeal. The grain clearly stands out against the light base tone, creating a contrasting play of colours that gives the elegant softwood a rustic mark. The Ostermann edging Fano Pine nature wooden structured is based on exactly these natural stone pine characteristics. And not just that: the “wooden structure” of the ABS edging also feels deceptively real. Tip: To really bring out the natural stone pine décor of your board and edging, you can combine them with white furniture elements. The mix will create a nice but subtle contrast.

Dark tones for cosy interiors: Jacobsen Pine black and silver Pine wooden structured It’s getting darker - but by no means less homely. If it is well combined, dark wood makes for a stylish interior without being oppressive. The black edging Jacobsen Pine black wooden structured is softened by grey and brown lines. It thus combines the elegance of dark furniture with the comfort of natural wood décors. A slightly lighter variant with a finely structured base is the ABS edging Silver Pine wooden structured.

From Europe to America: Ponderosa Pine In addition to the Mediterranean stone pine, Ostermann also offers a décor variant “from overseas”. The ABS edging Ponderosa Pine wooden structured owes its name to the Pinus ponderosa, the North American counterpart of the Mediterranean stone pine. The edging shows a greyish-brown colouration with typical strong grain. Its rustic look perfectly matches brown ponderosa surfaces with annual rings and knotholes. In terms of colour, it combines well with for example warm and dark colours, such as a strong burgundy or a deep fir green.

When managing director, Adrian Hall took over the business five years ago, the building already contained a wood waste heater, but it was quite old and hadn’t been very well looked after. Adrian didn’t want to be without a wood waste heater, having become reliant on it to dispose of waste wood and generate free heating, so he decided the business needed to replace it with a newer model.

A timber manufacturer has purchased a replacement wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to continue to save money on waste disposal bills and heating costs. Stoneleigh Timber Engineering Ltd is an independent manufacturer of roof trusses, floor joists, stairs and timber wall components based in Wiltshire. The business manufactures its products from a 1940’s building that used to make spitfire components. Although the large building provides the business with lots of manufacturing space, it’s a cold, draughty building to work in during the winter.

As Wood Waste Technology had been out to service the original boiler, Adrian contacted Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology to purchase a replacement. Adrian explains: “We generate 40 cubic metres of waste wood each year, so a wood waste heater is vital to our operation, especially as we aim to make our business as carbon neutral as possible. The WT15 burner ticks a lot of boxes for us, as it’s a good piece of kit at the right price – plus we’ve always found the team at Wood Waste Technology to be especially helpful. The new heater is fantastic, and performs even better than we hoped it would, giving us greater heat output than the original burner. We’re delighted we purchased a new one from Wood Waste Technology.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “Wood waste heaters help businesses to save money on heating, reduce waste disposal costs and provide carbon neutral energy, which are all extremely important factors in today’s economic climate.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German of engineered and

Philipp Stahl – skilled master painter and application engineer at Festool – shows how a meticulous refurbishment with the appropriate expertise can work true wonders in window restoration

Pfau Joinery from Pfungstadt (near Darmstadt/Frankfurt am Main, Germany) worked on windows up to five metres high in the Grand Ducal Palace of Darmstadt. Every single window is examined, repaired, sanded and then painted so that it shines with renewed splendour

Renewed splendour for old wooden window frames and casements

After all, a window that has “aged gracefully” has more than earned the right to be treated with care – not to mention the pretreatment and aftercare. A little forethought goes a long way First and foremost, care means preserving as much as possible of the original material. The same applies, of course, to window constructions in typical old buildings in need of modernisation. Before a window renovation begins, it is essential to assess its current condition in advance. This is easiest to do if the window is removed and placed on a suitable underlay so that it can be examined in close detail: Where are defects present? How badly is the paint peeling off? Is the window putty still intact? Can the frames still be used? How much of the frames can be preserved? How old is the wood and the coating? What kind of coating system is in place?

‘Going full speed ahead isn’t necessarily the best way to reach your goal. And that applies to oscillating as much as it does to the sanding work that comes after it’

Renovating windows is a complex task. This is particularly true in the conservation of cultural heritage, but is also increasingly the case for the modern and sustainable handling of existing materials like wood. A meticulous refurbishment with the appropriate expertise can preserve a window construction for many more years of use. The professional renovation of old windows is normally a complex endeavour for the craftspeople who are tasked with this. So it’s all the more important to give thought to the work well in advance and to make decisions based on sound knowledge and, ideally, on experience – not theoretical, but practical. Suppose you’re suddenly presented with a hundred-year-old window in need of restoration. A tricky task.

The VECTURO cordless oscillator in conjunction with the StarlockMax segment saw blade can also be used to remove the window putty completely Application engineer Philipp Stahl recommends removing the old coating from the defective area using the ROTEX RO 90 geared eccentric sander set to “coarse” for heavy material removal

As window frames and casements have few flat surfaces and many edges, the sanding disc size and geometry and the material removal capacity of the RO 90 make it ideal for window restorations. “It’s right here that the RO 90 demonstrates its advantages over hand sanding or other types of sander. I know that sanding by hand is very popular at this point but, in the long run or with too many window frames, it isn’t particularly effective. Also, particular care is called for when sanding close to the edges on windows – whether by hand or with a sander.

With the VECTURO OSC 18 cordless oscillator and the Starlock universal saw blade, unstable and rotten wood can be removed easily and sparingly.

A particularly good way to get this done quickly and accurately is with the VECTURO OSC 18 cordless oscillator,” insists Philipp Stahl – skilled master painter and application engineer at Festool. “If you meet resistance when cutting, it’s advisable to ease off rather than use force because too much heat doesn’t do the old wood anyGoinggood.full speed ahead isn’t necessarily the best way to reach your goal. And that applies to oscillating as much as it does to the sanding work that comes after it. Of course, the aim of coarse sanding is to remove material, whereas fine sanding is all about the quality of the sanding finish. Yet there are subtle gradations in between.Application pressure and speed control are excellent ways to adapt to the work,” says Stahl. In terms of technology and ergonomics, the VECTURO has everything you need for sawing, parting, scraping and cutting. Yet more importantly, however, it makes working in each of these applications every bit as easy as it is precise. And it starts with adding and changing attachments. In this regard, Festool trusts in the innovative tool holder StarlockMax.

Where necessary, old window panes should be removed.

The next work step, where necessary, entails the meticulous removal of the window panes. “For the complete removal of the existing window putty, the cordless oscillator in conjunction with the SSB segment saw blade proves ideal,” Stahl advises. “For the next work step – the removal of the old coating in the defective areas – we recommend the ROTEX RO 90 geared eccentric sander with the four functions of coarse and fine sanding, polishing and delta sanding. “In the coarse setting, the gear drive is engaged, providing excellent material removal capacity and ensuring the fast and effective eradication of the old coating. For finer material removal, you set the RO 90 to fine. Intact coatings can then be lightly sanded and roughened for subsequent coatings. For corners and rebates, the delta sanding pad can be fitted without any additional tools. In this way, the same tool can be used to sand or roughen the surface in every corner.

Step by step: good thinking

From experience, we craftspeople know that sanding damage to the glass is difficult to rectify afterwards. The same applies to silicone joints, by the way, because once these are damaged, they almost always need to be completely replaced – and then it starts to get really expensive,” explains application engineer Stahl.

Working on windows: no problem with the right equipment

The cordless oscillating tool with StarlockMax tool holder works as a system to provide 100% power transmission and maximum work progress. “This means that, when sawing, cutting or making ultra-precise plunge cuts, you can work even faster and more accurately. As an addition to the positioning accessories, we’ve developed a dust extraction device specifically for the cordless oscillator. Dust-free working is therefore possible in any situation without your view of the cut being restricted,” Stahl explains. “Particularly practical: The battery pack is not an intrusive clip-on module, but is instead incorporated ergonomically in the handle. The brushless EC-TEC motor is impressively smoothrunning and its speed can be electronically adjusted with stepless control. Just like the gear unit, it is connected to the case by means of elastic damping elements, an arrangement that reduces vibrations to allow continuous use for up to eight hours.”

111

“Old coatings that are no longer intact and loose sections of wood need to be removed or, if necessary, rough-sanded for closer examination. Areas of failed adhesion or defective knotholes have to be removed first.

“For precisely these kinds of applications, we recommend the use of our protectors. These protect against damage to the window pane.

Thanks to the intelligent quick-change system, the saw blades can be changed in under three seconds with no additional tools required: Simply release the clamping lever, eject the tool, position the new tool and click it into place. Fast and safe working

For fine sanding, simply set the RO 90 to “fine”. In addition, the sander can also be fitted with the delta pad quickly and without any additional tools, which enables craftspeople to sand narrow rebates and corners on the windows without any fuss >>

‘It’s right here that the RO 90 demonstrates its advantages over hand sanding or other types of sander. I know that sanding by hand is very popular at this point but, in the long run or with too many window frames, it isn’t particularly effective. Also, particular care is called for when sanding close to the edges on windows – whether by hand or with a sander’

After old coatings and the defective material have been removed, it is advisable to inspect the condition of the repair area once more

For the rebuilding of the window, the best way to start is by applying the DRY FIX UNI wood stabiliser from Repair Care with a soft brush. This increases the adhesive strength of the coating and the lifespan of the wood

After the DRY FLEX has sufficiently cured, any excess build-up can now be sanded level. Stahl recommends using the ROTEX RO 90 geared eccentric sander set to “coarse”

Rebuilding the defective areas

After the old coating and defective material have been removed, the condition of the repair areas is inspected again. “For the rebuilding of defective areas on windows, we’ve discovered that the system from Repair Care combined with our own system solutions delivers optimum results,” says Stahl.Following the condition inspection, the DRY FIX® UNI wood stabiliser is applied to the defective areas with a soft brush. This strengthens the adhesion of the subsequent DRY FLEX® wood repair compound and thereby prolongs the life of the window. For application of the wood repair compound, the two components are mixed with a putty knife on a smooth surface. The repair area can then be built up with DRY FLEX and worked to a smooth finish with the putty knife. Afterwards, the DRY FLEX wood repair compound is worked smooth across the defective area. It is essential to ensure that the voids are completely filled in with no inclusions of air. After the wood repair compound has cured, any excess build-up can now be sanded level. “We recommend using the ROTEX RO 90 with the “coarse” setting. After sanding, the worked area should be inspected once again. Particular attention should be paid to the transition between the wood and DRY FLEX wood repair compound. It must produce a flat surface,” Stahl explains.

After it has been sanded level, the worked area should be inspected: The most important factor is a flat surface on the transition between the wood and DRY FLEX wood repair compound

Before the pane is fitted, the rebate must be primed and the DRY SEAL® window putty applied in the rebate with a cartridge gun. After this, the pane can be fitted and the second layer of the DRY SEAL window putty applied and smoothed to a water-repellent finish. The finishing touches involve the obligatory primer, undercoat and top coat or paint, which can be applied by brush or roller.Modern and long-lasting window restorations are today subject to quite different stipulations, often also from a cultural heritage point of view: We preserve what needs to be preserved. It is crucial that all craftspeople approach the work with great care backed by professional experience.

New features that fulfil the four foundation blocks With any new concept, the experts at Vollmer aim to achieve four key delivery parameters for customers. These are increased flexibility, productivity, reliability and quality. Alluding to this, Thomas adds: “We met the goals by creating more stable processes in the new machines to provide better grinding results at the cutting edge. This was the fundamental reason for the new CNC control, motors, new features for oscillation, grinding and cutting speeds.”

Previously, a customer would need 10-15 minutes to undertake this reset/change-up. Of course, some customers only undertake this saw type change once a day, but others repeat this a few times a day. It’s now done immediately, saving the customer time.”

Thomas Wenger presenting the two new machines to the press at the GrindingHub Show

“Flange saws are very prominent in the wood industry and this will make it much more flexible to accept different types of saw blades.

Discussing the concept behind the two new machines that will supersede the CHD 270 and CHF 270 saw blade processing machines, Thomas says: “The CHD and CHF machines were based on a completely different construction to our new technology. The CHF side grinding machine was designed in 2000 and the CHD face and top grinding machine was designed in 2004-05 – we continually evolved these machines, but we reached the limit of what could be achieved with the existing construction and this was reflected in the machines at the end. Now, with new drives and software technology on a new foundation – we can add new features for our customers.”

The major advantages of software The four pillars of flexibility, productivity, reliability and quality are often interwoven in the very DNA of machines – overlapping with each other. With the new CS and CSF machines, Vollmer has pushed the boundaries of software technology on all fronts. As Thomas states: “On the CHD machine, the software automatically recognised the end point of grinding, and that was it. We have evolved this to increase output

“Looking at flexibility, one important thing is the integration of an additional axis, the R2 axis. This cross-axis at the saw carrier makes it possible to grind saws with a flange. Flexibility was previously limited because saws were manually set. Now, this is completely flexible as you can mix saws with different flange heights and even mix saws with and without flanges.”

“We identified our development goals and we started to design the CS and CSF machines. So, the base, the housing and many other elements are completely different to before, but components that have proven their stability and accuracy over many years remain. We have designed both new machines with the same kinematics, housing, structure and polymer concrete base, so we can have a modular foundation. This makes it easier for us internally to streamline production and reduce lead times. It also makes the machine easier for the operator to handle as there is greater synergy between the CS and CSF machines. This creates uniformity with regard to loading, setting-up, the view and ergonomics and also the“Thisprogramming.”uniformity of technology was our target, adopting the same CNC, operating philosophy and also the latest drive technology. In the past, we used some servo motors with standard synchronous motors. Now, all motors, grinding spindles and axes are servo driven. We have seven motors on the CSF side grinder and eight on the CS face and top grinder, this includes linear CNC axes plus three CNC grinding spindles on the face/topper and two CNC grinding spindles on the side grinder. The servodriven grinding spindles provide a higher quality saw blade and we can now conduct different in-feed and cutting speed rates on each tooth. This improves the surface quality of the cutting edge and brings more flexibility into the grinding process. Customers can now do whatever they wish.”Expanding on the servo motors, Thomas says: “Previously, standard motors had power and encoder cables, by evolving to the OCT (one cable technology) hyperface technology there is just one cable. This means there are fewer cables and switches, reduced power consumption and it is easier to change a single cable – something that reduces the future service costs for the customer.”

If it is left closed, there will be scratches in the gullet area, if you open the clamp and push the next tooth - you need to hold the saw blade somewhere. This is why we use the rotating flange together with the centre brake, so we can open the clamp and push the tooth to the next position. This eliminates scratches at the centre or around the gullet area at the end of the process.”

Working for Vollmer for 24 years and spending over 14 years in product management, Thomas Wenger has incredible industry experience in the circular saw marketplace. With the new CSF860 side grinding machine and the CS860 face and top grinding machine both making their worldwide exhibition premiere at the GrindingHub exhibition in May, we speak to Thomas about the arrival of the two new machines.

“We also have a new ‘centre brake’ feature. In the past, we would put the saw carrier on the machine and the saw blade would rotate on the flange. When processing coated or strobe saw blades, the carrier could leave scratches on the blade - so we created a carrier that rotates with the blade. In the end, there is a centre brake and clamping plate on the gullet that opens when we push the tooth to the next grinding position.

Vollmer introduce two new saw blade sharpening machines

“Nowadays, we are increasingly calculating production costs per square metre, especially in saw service centres that have limited space. To free up capacity without building a new hall or facility, this new technology will reduce the production cost per square metre for customers, as the machines can produce more blades per day.”Software for the Sawmill

115 by up to 20%.”

The evolution of software is also helping Vollmer to bridge the skills gap for its customers. As Thomas continues: “If you look at our VPulse or

Precision and quality With Thomas already emphasising how software is reducing data input requirements, ‘air-cutting’ times and manual measuring processes – the software cannot undertake such tasks without the supporting hardware. And here, Thomas acknowledges the ingenuity of the new measuring technology: “The stable production processes are derived from three measuring devices. First, we have the Renishaw MP250 measuring probe repeatable to 1µm. It has high-end 3D precision unnecessary on machine tools that only require single point contact. We use the Renishaw MP250, as its spherical system provides remarkable accuracy regardless of contact point direction and we need this as our face and top grinders, measure all around the tooth.”

“The new optional software takes the calculation work away from the operator. At present, the operator measures the grinding length on the face, top and chamfers. If the customer has trapezoid geometries, the straight part of the tip can be longer than the chamfer, which means some faces may need more grinding than others. The new software calculates where the customer starts and finishes the grinding pass - doing everything automatically. The customer no longer has to measure the difference between the flat surface and chamfer. The in-process cycle reduces noncutting times. For example, a tip with a 15mm surface area on the top face may only require 12mm of grinding on the chamfer. Our software automatically calculates this, so 3mm of ‘aircutting’ per tooth is eliminated.”

The Vollmer CS860 >>

Emphasising the software evolution with the new CS machine, Thomas says: “In addition, the customer now has less data to input. There are just two main pages and this has always been our strength, but we have now simplified this furtherby integrating more measurement functionality. One page for the face and another for the top grinding - and the customer can activate particular features just by entering a one or a zero. Previously, the operator would measure each parameter and programming was a combination of having the saw blade on the left-hand and the programming screen on the right side. Vollmer only used to measure the hook angle, but now we also measure the clearance and bevel angle. Once the operator activates the feature, he no longer measures –just inputs basic data like tooth shape, number of teeth – and that is it. This eliminates much of the ‘pre-measuring process’ that can be two-tothree minutes per blade.”

Integrating software and Industry 4.0 Expanding upon customer support: “We have also incorporated Industry 4.0 technology with our software. Now, if an end-user has quality concerns with their saws, our customer can undertake a final inspection before dispatch. When a saw is complete, a measuring sequence can be applied to one tooth or all teeth on the blade. Our customer can select their measurement parameters. This process creates an XML file for quality and traceability to ensure each saw is 100% correct. Previously, saw manufacturers and service shops used manual measuring equipment and inspected every fifth or tenth saw blade for conformity - and then recorded the data. Now, a fully automated sequence can be integrated to save considerable time.”

Bridging the skills gap

“One cost reduction per square metre contributor is the new pocket grinding feature.

Vgrind, we have a different user interface that is more well-known in 5-axis CNC grinding, but operators in that field are different to the sawmill industry. Our software explains everything with pictures, simplifying the process for operators with no background knowledge of saw blades. The two pages of content that an operator has to complete, are the same as before - but data input is significantly less. We always aim to increase automation, as our customers have a challenge with staff skill levels. Once upon a time, a saw shop would have many staff that could programme machines. Now, companies with 30 to 40 staff may only have one or two employees that can do this. This is a challenge we are undertaking to support our customers.”

“The second system is the brand new measuring cube for the grinding wheels. It has an absolute fixed point and it gives absolute knowledge of the grinding wheel position. If there is a temperature fluctuation in the machine or spindle, this fixed point will compensate for all other parameters. It is very stable and fast. We can measure the grinding wheels whilst

“From a flexibility perspective, we also added a multi-surface program where the customer can input up to 30 lines. This allows the user to program three multi-surfaces, and the multisurfaces can be added to one facet or 90. We have also extended the diameter range to 860mm from 840mm.”

“This patented technology reduces production times. As an example, if you eliminate 3mm of air cutting on a 60 tooth saw blade, that is 180mm of air cutting. If you are grinding at 4mm/sec that is a saving of 45 seconds on a single blade.”

The guys in the sawmill industry are re-tipping saws and using the saw body 2, 3 or 4 times.

These companies heat off the old tips and before brazing-on new tips, they manually regrind the pocket seat – a labour intensive job. We’ve added this is a fully automated process. So, if customers have taken the teeth off the saw body, it can be added to the stack and the pocket will be reground. In the high-end metal industry, pocket seat grinding has to be very precise. They may be milling or laser cutting the saw body to tolerances of +/-0.1 or 0.2mm, this is too high for manufacturers producing metal cutting saw blades – we can now automate to much higher precision levels.”

From an internal perspective, Thomas concludes: “We are now moving to a point where 90% of our new machines will be built upon a modular platform. In our ‘frozen zone’ from order to delivery, this time can now be much shorter because we can be more flexible in building up the machine. We can change from one machine to another and add the optional units more flexibly – this will reduce our lead times, costs and increase our production flow.”

Product development and the future “I’ve been having weekly meetings with my worldwide sales colleagues for over 14 years. We collect all the sales engineers and customer requests - the list is huge. The base point for our development is the well-built technology from before. We analyse the technology and how we can improve the machines, but on the other side, there is a huge list of customer requests or needs. So, we have to understand the customer requests and integrate them with product development - and from that point, we identify what functions we need, and how they can be incorporated into the hardware and software.”

With regard to the changing requirements of the market in the face of the pandemic and rising energy costs, Thomas says: “The level of automation is the biggest factor. Machines need to make more and more by themselves. This is what we see in the market and it is one of the most important factors for us.

"Our Industry 4.0 technology has provided comprehensive remote support during Covid and our energy efficiency and productivity enhancements are reducing the cost per square metre of production for our customers – we will always drive this forward.”

“This grinding wheel measurement is preprogrammable, but the manufacturer generally knows they need to recalibrate the wheel every 5 or 10 saw blades. The customer can define the measuring point, whether it be by the number of teeth or saw blades processed. Furthermore, the customer is not losing production time – a concern in the past. As an example, the wheel measuring process takes 20 to 25 seconds and it can be undertaken simultaneously with the saw blade changeover takes 25 to 30 seconds when using a double gripper system or roughly 50 seconds with the single gripper system. This effectively enables every saw blade to be measured to a precision level of roughly 2µm to guarantee process stability without losing production time.”

Sustainability Adding to the reduced energy consumption comments, Thomas is keen to allude to Vollmer’s sustainability credentials: “Vollmer always aims to drive down energy consumption costs for our customers. LED lighting has been used for some time, but we also incorporate technologies like automatic ‘end of shift’ switch off. Furthermore, no Vollmer machines use hydraulic systems. This eliminates hydraulic oil, the potential for spillage or contamination of the coolant and the wider workshop. This also removes the need for filter changes.”

“What’s more, with Industry 4.0, we can undertake service from anywhere. We can update the machine components and software remotely. Our remote system can also email the customer when a batch of saws is complete, or if there is a disruption during a production cycle - emailing the customer their complete machine status. The active dashboard can be accessed via a mobile phone or tablet to provide a complete up-to-date status report.”

116 PRODUCTS the machine changes the saw blades. In the past, it was necessary to compensate the grinding wheel by measuring the tooth - this was unproductive time. Integrating this process increases grinding stability whilst reducing unproductive time.”

“For example, in the past, we had the electrical cabinet at the back of the machine - but if you have three machines alongside each other, there is only 900mm of space between the machines. The customers have fed this response back to us and on the new machines, we have moved the electrical cabinet to a side where customers would have the gangway.”

“We have now added our third measurement device to the new side grinder - our acoustic sensor that was on the CHD machine. This promotes very fast setups by combining technologies. With the Renishaw probe, we probe the raw and finished tooth, with the measuring cube we measure the grinding wheel and with the acoustic sensor, we are bringing everything together by checking the tooth with the wheel. The wheel senses the tooth and the acoustic sensor knows if we have the right infeed – making all three measuring devices work together.”Toachieve such precision demands a robust foundation as Thomas says: “Vollmer is the only manufacturer that uses a concrete polymer base. Very few competitors use a cast iron base; most build machines by constructing steel machined components. Our polymer concrete foundation makes our machines different from our competitors - it puts our quality and precision on a completely different level.”

Productivity From a productivity perspective, the automatic blade measuring calculation is saving 5-20% of in-cycle ‘air-cutting’, the new saw carrier and flange system eliminate 10-15 minute changeover times, manual measuring of 2-3 minutes per blade is eliminated and there is also the elimination of 25 seconds of non-productive wheel checking, new automated pocket grinding and much more. Despite all this, Thomas adds: “The new machines are much faster than the older machines. The new base models are 2-4% faster than the old machines and this is credit to the new drive technology. The new drive technology enables us to locate and move the axes more dynamically. This has also enabled the automatic sensing of the grinding passes, which is reducing the air cutting. The machines are consuming upwards of 10% less energy, as the drives are more efficient than before. So, you have 10% less energy consumption with a 20%+ productivity improvement. By adding these factors together, we are reducing the ‘cost per saw’ for our customers and reducing their cost per square metre of production.”

‘The workforce hated changing the bags and hated tipping them into a hopper by hand. It was also a huge Health & Safety issue with masks and overalls needed. A very unpleasant job!’

“The need to constantly change bags meant that production was often interrupted for ½ hour each time the bags needed changing. Often the bags were forgotten and then overfilled resulting in hazardous dust spillages. The new storage silo means that the production can run uninterrupted, and the waste can be burnt 24/7.

“Mounted under the conical silo out-feeder there are two Rotary valves. There is also a small cartridge filter on the transfer screw (inclined) the second rotary valve is between the transfer screw and the feed stoker. This long feed screw and twin rotary valves, ensures no air is transferred from the extraction system to the heater (150, 240, 300, 450 or 600kW) Note heavy duty bends on duct as customer had installed a hogger to deal with off-cuts – no more hand loading on this site!” www.ranheat.com

Ranheat Engineering is a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment. As the company’s MD Chris Franklin explains in his latest in a series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production, he looks at converting bag mounted dust extraction systems to use with a new silo and heating system. “The above shows a typical floor mounted bag extraction system where the customer spends more time emptying bags than machining –normally, this happens when a new CNC router is installed,” explains Chris. “Depending on the physical size of the filter it is mounted on a Ranheat 3m or 4m diameter silo of between 14- and 50m3 storage capacity. In the shed on the right was an existing small warm air heater trying to use bags of dust, it was too slow and too labour intensive. The workforce hated changing the bags and hated tipping them into a hopper by hand. It was also a huge Health & Safety issue with masks and overalls needed. A very unpleasant job! “Ranheat don’t make or install dust extraction systems, but used a local dust extraction contractor to modify the ducting. The system was to replace a hand loaded off-cut burner and a small hand loaded silo as a dust burner.

“This represented a huge saving in labour, not only in changing the bags but hand loading the dust and off-cuts. The factory was also warm in the cold winter mornings, The summer winter diverter means the plant can run all the year round for the safe and effective disposal of fine MDF dusts from high speed machining.

“This is the same filter with the bag plenum removed and bolted directly onto a flanged upstand on the silo roof. The silo is fitted with accredited silo burst panels on the dirty side of the filter. An automatically-fed 150kW warm air system was installed fed from the new silo of 21m3. The existing six-bag extraction system held only just over 1.5m3 of extracted dust before the bags needed changing.

Nick Betteley, technical director at Stakapal, is a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI), he offers his advice on making sure your storage racking remains safe and fit for purpose. Stakapal have over 55 years’ experience manufacturing storage solutions for the furniture and joinery industry. As Full SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) members, we play a very proactive role in the development of standards for the storage industry in the UK. Did you know that your racking also plays a critical role in keeping your employees safe? After all racking has the potential to cause serious damage to people and property. Some of the common storage problems include racking not levelled properly, items loaded incorrectly for the storage design, overhang of goods and uneven load distribution or not implementing a regular inspection routine to identify any damage to your racks. Safety in racking design The overall safety of your racking systems begins with the design and manufacturing process. Careful consideration should be given to the range of products you are storing, the required loading capacities plus relevant lengths andWhatdimensions.typeofmechanical equipment such as forklift trucks are you using? Are there adequate aisle widths to provide a safe working environment? For all areas of your site including handloaded pedestrian areas, how will your staff interact with the system?

Annual inspections You need to engage a trained inspector to undertake an Expert Inspection on an annual basis. A SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) approved racking inspector (SARI) satisfies the HSE’s criteria for a technically competent person to carry out an annual inspection as per HSG76 guidance.

Safety in installation Once your design has been finalised you also need to consider the integrity of the installation process. Even the smallest change in its original design configuration and non-adherence to installation tolerances can affect the structural integrity of the racking. That is why it is a legal requirement, under the HSE’s Construction Design & Management Regulations 2015, for business owners to check the installers credentials.Installation of racking is a skilled job and should only be carried out by experienced and qualified installers who assemble to the manufacturer’s specification. Stakapals’ in-house teams, are registered and put through SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) which is a unique initiative from SEMA that aims to raise safety standards at the point of installation. Safety in signage It is a legal obligation for each racking structure to have a Load Notice securely and clearly visible. The Load Notice is a key safety item that should be supplied by your provider to ensure your racking complies with PUWER regulations. It is one of the first things any HSE inspector will check when visiting your site. Safety in maintenance Staff should be encouraged to immediately report any damage they see so that it can be assessed. Visual inspections should be conducted on a regular basis (usually weekly) which can be undertaken by a member of staff who has received appropriate training. They will check that loading is specified according to the load notice, ensure correct usage of the racking is being followed and identify if there are any missing or damaged components. Inspections must be properly documented with any issues acted on immediately. Where you find damage that affects the safety of the racking system, offload the racking and introduce controls to prevent it being used until remedial work has been carried out.
