Comment As the year draws to a close, it is always a good time to pause and reflect, and to turn our thoughts towards the next year and beyond. Above all else, it’s fairly clear that Covid, and to a lesser extent, Brexit, will remain key factors for some time to come, especially to those with European colleagues and partners. With warnings of increasing death tolls across Europe (which could reach two million by March next year according to the WHO), it’s clear that supply chains will be stressed well into next year, and probably beyond that too. Given the challenges of Covid, it’s not surprising that for an industry underpinned by innovation, the last 18 months have not delivered the amount of significant innovations that we usually see. That’s not to say there has been a total lack of product introductions, but I would say it has been more about finessing and tweaking than completely new product releases. But the rise of automation and sophisticated software driving many of the new breed of machinery continues to grow. Alongside this is the undeniable breadth of materials with more sophisticated performance capabilities that are being released with alacrity – this, for sure, will continue to grow in the coming years. On the structural side of business, this year has seen the continued rise of agency and distribution companies, with some taking their offers to very impressive new levels. Echoing other factors in our lives, and a pandemic which has made us question much of what we took for granted, my feeling is that furniture and joinery manufacturers are going through a process of checking in with and looking for more from their suppliers – seeing if there are alternative, perhaps more advantageous partnerships on offer, with a more local, personal and serviceoriented set-up. In the medium term, it would not surprise me to see new contenders vying for customers’ favour, and I believe there may even be one or two well-organised UK subsidiaries establishing themselves in the near future, challenging the status quo. Of course, the one element I think we can all agree on that has been missing over the last 20 months has been major trade events. Some would have you believe they are no longer necessary – and while recently it has been a buoyant market, trade events are an intrinsic and important part of our business. I remain a fan of the pop-up events, and feel they too have a key role to play for those seeking a more one-to-one style event – but I feel most of us are yearning to attend a full-fat major trade event. Not only to examine the new tech and materials our businesses rely on, but also to interact with our peers, to feel the temperature, and of course to properly compare the market, which you cannot do at most in-house events. So, we look forward to what 2022 will bring, with ambition as always, looking for ideas and opportunities to help our businesses prosper – and hopefully some trade shows to nourish our thinking. Combilift wins Energia Family Business of the Year award 2021 Energia, the largest supplier of 100% green energy in Ireland, recently hosted its biannual awards ceremony virtually, with 19 awards being presented to Irish family businesses. Combilift has been recognised as the overall winner of the Energia Family Business of the Year 2021. The awards celebrate generations of families who work together, and this year’s ceremony focused on honouring businesses which have demonstrated outstanding leadership and resilience throughout the Covid-19 pandemic while continuing to thrive and grow. Around 200 family business entries were submitted for consideration by the judging panel. The criteria for success was a business which has drawn on its family values to build a successful company, one which acts as a great ambassador for the sector and makes a significant contribution to society and the wider economy. Combilift was nominated for two categories, Innovative Family Business Award and Manufacturing

Timberpak’s new site in Leeds Waste wood recycling and reprocessing company, Timberpak, has announced a significant investment into a site in Leeds. The six-acre site, on Cross Green Industrial Estate, will increase Timberpak’s waste wood capacity in order to meet the growing demand for recycled material from Egger UK. This material is used to produce carbon-negative chipboard at plants in Hexham and Barony, destined for the interior design and housebuilding industries. Previously owned by Hesco Bastian, the new site is perfectly located to service Timberpak customers in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. The investment reinforces the recycling company’s commitment to make more from

wood by storing carbon in waste wood that would otherwise be burnt or sent to landfill. Over the coming months, the site will undergo an extensive fit-out, with the installation of new picking and processing technology, to ensure the maximum amount of waste wood material can be processed. This investment will bring additional revenue to the area. The new site is strategically

located to benefit the large furniture groups, civic amenity sites and industrial users, which are regular suppliers of waste wood to Timberpak. The purchase signals a commitment by the company to continually invest in the business and ensure a secure and sustainable long-term supply of recycled material. will ensure we can maximise our output and protect one of our most valuable natural resources, wood. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to fully support our customers with disposing of waste material responsibly, and continue to grow our business. The recycled wood we supply to Egger UK makes up 40% of a chipboard panel, which is 100% recyclable following use. Our new site will offer additional processing and storage capacity to meet the demand from Egger’s production sites.” Paul Mack from commercial property consultant, Gent Visick, supported Timberpak with the purchase of the site. In addition to the new site, Timberpak has invested over £1.9m across its four existing sites. This includes the acquisition of three Liebherr loading shovels, one Scania tractor unit, three Legras walking floor trailers, two Sennabogon Electric 360 material handlers and 50 yard bins.

Lathams moves to address ‘lack of carbon understanding’ in industry Timber and materials supplier James Latham has released a ‘carbon calculator’ designed to direct customers towards more sustainable products. Built in partnership with the BioComposites Department at the University of Bangor, it is based upon detailed research into the embodied and biogenic carbon impacts of the products that it supplies. The calculator covers just over 70% of the total Lathams range, and focuses on timber products. In time, it will also incorporate composite materials that were out of scope for the first phase. Ewa Bazydlo, environmental manager at Lathams, says: “Reducing the environmental impact of our buildings is one of the key issues of our time. However, the understanding around sustainability is not consistent across the industry. “We’ve developed the calculator to help our customers to better understand the sustainability of the materials they choose as well as the expected performance levels that they offer.”

The tool calculates environmental impact by looking at the carbon footprint of products, from production through to delivery to Lathams’ depots. It also looks at how much carbon is stored within the wood’s structure, known as biogenic carbon. Each product then receives a rating from 1-4 (one being the highest, four being the lowest), based on the confidence that Lathams has in the data used for the calculations. The higher the score, the higher the quality of the data points that have been reviewed, for example an audited and published EPD (Environmental Performance Declaration). Lathams will be adding the carbon data to all invoices, delivery notes, and other key documentation to increase visibility around this issue. It is a move that Campbell Skinner, senior lifecycle assessment analyst at BioComposites Centre, argues is a positive step forward: “Companies have used eco-labels before, but the approach taken by Lathams is really innovative. For the first time

Management buyout at ATA Following a management buyout in November, ATA Engineering Processes has changed its trading name to ATA Engineering Products – and Mark Whitbread is now be the owner and MD of the new company. Having earned its stripes supplying tools for the aerospace Industry, ATA has built a first-class reputation for supplying CNC laser cutters, router cutters and woodworking machines. In a statement, Mark said: “We will continue to sell the same extensive selection of products and hope that we can continue our mutual beneficial working relationship with our customers. “I would also like to thank ATA customers in advance for their continued support and look forward to working with them all and growing our businesses together.” The company’s contact details remain the same. 01442 264411 sales@ataeng.com www.ataeng.com

that I’m aware, the confidence with which these footprints are presented is rated and placed foremost in the labelling. “Latham’s customers are being given a clear indication of the transparency with which suppliers are reporting their carbon footprints and this will surely nudge more companies towards independently verified reporting schemes, such as EPDs.” Ewa adds: “We needed a mechanism to rank our products and make it quick and easy for our customers to be able to specify more carbon conscious materials. As a large distributor, we have the relationships with the supply chain, which improves our ability to source and analyse the relevant data and make recommendations. “We hope that others in the industry follow our lead and improve the transparency around

these products so that we can work together to reduce construction’s impact on the environment.” To complement the calculator and share some of the insights from its research, Lathams will be publishing a Think You Know Carbon? guide. It will include an overview of the main issues in sustainability, a glossary of key terminology and steps that architects and specifiers can take to be more sustainable in their designs. It will also include highlights of some of the most sustainable products Lathams stocks, from manufacturers such as Accsys Technologies, which produce modified timber Accoya, and UPM Plywood, home to WISA plywood products. Four medals for skilled Blum workers at EuroSkills 2021 At EuroSkills 2021, the European vocational skills championship, young skilled professionals from across Europe came together in Graz to demonstrate their various skills. The four participants from Blum showcased their talent and took home one silver and three bronze medals. At the seventh European vocational skills championship, which was the first to be held in Austria, Kevin Emhofer (CNC Turning), Mike Fink (CNC Milling), Lukas Schwärzler (Industrial Mechanics) and Lucas Dolinar (CAD Design) were the four young professionals to take part from Blum. And the result is certainly something to be proud of – the quartet from Graz took home one silver and three bronze medals. Silver medal for Kevin Emhofer The 22-year-old from Hoechst beat some tough competition in the CNC Turning category to take home the silver medal. “At first I was just looking at my workpiece and thinking, how am I supposed to do this in the time I have? But then I just started to put into practice what I’ve learned, step by step,” says Kevin, giving an insight into the competition. As he had just completed his national service, there was little time for him to prepare: “That’s why I never expected to come away with silver. The team spirit with the coaches and the other candidates was invaluable. It took the pressure off me and meant that I was never alone throughout the long competition. It feels really good to have the medal around

my neck now,” says the European championship silver medallist in CNC Turning. Three bronze medals round off a marvellous result “We spent months preparing. The level at EuroSkills is really high and the three days of competition are very challenging. It feels fantastic to know that all the work was worth it and I’m happy that we were able to showcase our skills. The medal is the perfect reward,” says Mike Fink with a smile, as he reflects on his bronze medal in CNC Milling. Lucas Dolinar also secured third place in CAD Design: “The long and intense training that I did to prepare paid off and everything went to plan for me at EuroSkills. I just wanted a medal. I didn’t mind whether it was bronze, silver or gold. This made the feeling of actually going up onto the podium even sweeter,” explains the 22 year old. The fourth member of the Blum team also impressed in the Industrial Mechanics category of the international competition

and took home a bronze medal: “It wasn’t always plain sailing during the competition. I really had to keep a cool head. Right up until the end, I wasn’t sure if I’d done enough. Getting a medal is an indescribable feeling,” says Lukas Schwärzler. Exceptional performances by apprentices and instructors An international competition is always an exciting challenge for apprentices and instructors alike. “We are extremely proud of all our competitors and overjoyed by their outstanding achievements,” stresses Dieter Hämmerle, head of vocational training at Blum. “The best of the best compete at EuroSkills. The right frame of mind, nerves of steel and tolerances of a thousandth of a millimetre are crucial here. “Our intensive preparation, which includes mental coaching and team-building exercises, has definitely paid off,” explains Dieter, adding: “We are delighted that EuroSkills 2021 took place – despite all the setbacks. “This international competition is very important to us, as a company that believes in training and apprenticeships, because it also puts the quality of our vocational

training to the test time and time again. Everyone is talking about the shortage of skilled professionals. These kinds of competition are all the more reason to help counteract this. Next time, I hope that we can compete with even more participants – and perhaps some female competitors too.” Additional participants from Vorarlberg in Graz Two more apprentices from Blum, Jonas Brunner and Marc Domig, were able to participate without official scoring, using the event as an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming national championship. Four coaches and three experts from the Blum team of instructors were on hand at the big event and supported the young, skilled professionals. ‘Team Vorarlberg’ was completed by three other participants and one jury member from the Vorarlbergbased company. A total of 450 competitors across 45 professions took part – from 23rd-25th September 2021, competing for the coveted title of European champion in their categories.

Technical paper aims to ‘set the standard’ for measuring embodied carbon in timber construction Timber Development UK is bringing clarity on how to account for embodied carbon in timber construction, with a newly released technical paper. ‘Assessing the carbon-related impacts and benefits of timber in construction products and buildings’ explains how to account for carbon in timber buildings and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) by rigorously applying the latest British/European standards. This will prove useful for building designers, clients and contractors when assessing the embodied carbon associated with buildings and other structures, as well as product manufacturers and suppliers in demonstrating the carbon impact of their products.

Charlie Law, sustainability director at Timber Development UK, says: “The construction and built environment sector is responsible for nearly 40% of global CO2 emissions, and a significant proportion of this is through embodied carbon accumulated within the construction and manufacturing process. “Regulatory and professional focus has for the past four decades largely focused on operational carbon, such as heating in buildings, while embodied carbon emissions have been overlooked – but this is beginning to change. “Across the built environment professions there is a rising wave of awareness that if we are to build to net-zero carbon, we need to tackle how we account for embodied carbon. “This paper seeks to help unify how we account for embodied carbon within timber buildings and structures so we can better understand, measure, and address these emissions in order to reduce their environmental impact. “Along with the likes of Part Z and the Climate Emergency Design Guide, this paper seeks to help build understanding and drive forward low-carbon construction, and set the standard for measuring embodied carbon in timber construction.” Timber Development UK worked with Jane

Charlie Law, sustainability director at Timber Development UK

Anderson of ConstructionLCA to develop this paper, the first technical paper from this newly formed membership organisation which is aiming to bring together the entire timber supply chain. Timber Development UK was formed in 2021 by the merger of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA). By combining the membership of these two organisations, Timber Development UK has more than 1500 members, which extend all the way from sawmill to specifier. This paper is free to download from the TTF website – https://ttf.co.uk/download/tduktechnical-paper/

Timber import patterns shift rapidly to meet high demand in Q3 The market has proved responsive to high demand for timber in the UK, with imports sourced from a far broader range of supplying countries in Q3. Demand for timber and panel products during the summer months of 2021 was at record levels, with import volumes over 3.2 million m3 in these three months alone. August became the third consecutive month when import volumes exceeded one million

cubic metres, with softwood imports surging to meet the uplift in construction demand. Softwood imports in June, July and August 2021 were +33% higher than the same months in 2020, when demand for softwood began to recover during the first lockdown. A broader spread of countries have also been supplying this softwood to the UK in these three months compared to the same period in 2020.

Softwood import volumes significantly increased from many countries, including from Latvia by +53% (+175,000m m3), Germany by +93% (+120,000m3), and Canada by +195% (+12,000m3). Other product groups followed similar trends, with hardwood imports rising by +30%, with substantially higher volumes arriving from the Baltics, Croatia and Hungary. However, it was softwood plywood imports which saw the most radical change in Q3, with an increase in supply from China by +372% (29,800m3). David Hopkins, CEO of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF), says: “The timber industry has gone through a period of unprecedented demand through the summer as people invested in home improvements and maintenance. “The changing trade patterns

New area sales manager appointed at Weinig UK Andy Morgan has been appointed as the new area sales manager for leading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Weinig UK. Taking over the role from Dean Grimbley who, after 35 years with the company is moving on to pastures new, Andy will be responsible for Weinig machinery sales in the Midlands. With over 20 years of experience as a bench joiner and woodworking machinist – and more recently, a software configurator and trainer for the woodworking industry – Andy’s interest in bespoke joinery and carpentry, combined with his comprehensive knowledge and technical understanding of woodworking machinery, makes him the ideal person to strengthen sales and develop key relationships with new and existing customers in his area. “My background sees me approach things differently,” says Andy. “I’ve been a Weinig customer myself – spending seven years operating and maintaining Weinig’s Conturex machines – and during that time, I worked closely with Weinig’s aftersales and technical support team.

“I built great working relationships with them, and the support was the best I’ve ever encountered. Because of this, I firmly believe in Weinig’s product and service offering. I can be open and honest about the build and performance of Weinig’s machinery and the support that comes with it because I’ve experienced it first-hand. This was a huge driving force behind my decision to work for Weinig, and I’m excited to be working for a company that is so well respected in the woodworking industry.” Malcolm Cuthbertson, MD of Michael Weinig (UK), adds: “Andy is a time-served wood machinist with a detailed understanding of the mechanics behind our machines. This, plus his experience working outside the manufacturing industry – helping joinery companies integrate control software into their production processes – makes Andy a great fit for Weinig, and I’m confident his skillset will make him a valuable asset to the Weinig team. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Dean for his 35 years of service, and the whole team wish him all the best in his next position.”

seen here show a resilient and innovative timber supply chain that is capable of harnessing new markets to satisfy the high domestic demand seen throughout the summer. “As mentioned in our recent market statement, we expect demand to slow further in Q4 and in the new year as colder weather and post-Covid restriction spending habits ease demand for RM&I and private housing. “It is likely however that demand for timber will remain strong as the Government looks to achieve climate targets, particularly as they emerge from COP26 with firm international commitments. “Timber is essential to building low-carbon in the UK, and this is reflected in the recent Net-Zero Strategy, with the Government endorsing a policy plan to increase the use of wood in construction.”

Global Forests need Global Governance – Tropical Timber Accord launches at COP26 A major new initiative to tackle illegal deforestation and strengthen legal governance frameworks in tropical forest producer countries and within international timber supply chains was recently launched at COP26. Billed as a ‘call to action’ from the global private sector involved in forest management and timber production globally, the Tropical Timber Accord - ‘Global Forests need Global Governance’ highlights that strong, inclusive legal frameworks are essential for the sustainable management of tropical forests, which underpins all other climate policy ambitions. The paper proposes a new governance approach for the global tropical forest sector, based on national standards within an international framework. Crucially, it also proposes supporting an international secretariat to administer and oversee the development of this framework. Produced from a series of workshops with trade associations and businesses throughout the tropical production belt and facilitated and led by the UK Timber Trade Federation (TTF), the Accord is supported by associations in consumer nations including China, Europe and the UK. Vel Gnanendran, climate and environment director of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, says: “We really welcome this call to action that the TTF has facilitated. We have to be able to support growth in countries across the world where the forests are an important economic resource, but at the same time, protect and support our climate-change objectives.” Sheam Satkuru, director of operations of the International Tropical Timber Organisation, says: “Protecting and growing our global forests cannot be left to ‘one-sided’ approaches, but must be within a continual dialogue which supports sustainable production and shares the cost of enforcement. “The tropical timber sector has a key role in achieving the forest management and conservation goals of COP26, and this requires the private sector, governments and civil society coming together

Meet the team – Darren Ismay, service engineer at TM Machinery to promote governance and sustainable management of resources.” David Hopkins, chief executive of the UK Timber Trade Federation (pictured), adds: “This is the first time that the global private sector of the forestry management and timber production industry has come together to speak with one united voice to advocate for greater global governance and enforceable legal frameworks in supply chains and within producer forest

countries. Now we need to start to put some of the detail behind those pledges into action, with a far stronger global legal framework governing the management of forests and the trade through the supply chains.”

Meet Darren Ismay. While you may not recognise his face, if you have bought a reconditioned woodworking machine from TM Machinery in the last five years, you are sure to have experienced his work first-hand … A self-proclaimed motorbike enthusiast and former racer with decades of experience working in manufacturing and motor mechanics, Darren joined TM Machinery in 2016 as an in-house engineer with responsibility for coordinating all machinery shipments going in and out of the warehouse, and refurbishing a wide range of used machinery. In the last six months, Darren has completed his level 3 apprenticeship, and is now a fully qualified engineer. “Refurbishing machinery is a big part of my job and an area I take great pride in,” says Darren, 50. “I am currently working on five machines, each needing varying levels of refurbishment. It’s my job to get them looking and working like new. “Every machine is thoroughly cleaned before being stripped down, with parts serviced and replaced. The machine is then set up and fully tested before being shipped to its new home. “No job is ever the same and I really do love that – it keeps me on my toes. You also need to be a real problem solver, be open to approaching each project differently and have an eye for detail to get the job done well.” Darren admits that he knows the machines he works on well – he’s even able to pick up on some faults

through the tone of the motor – but this is where his technical abilities and passion for the industry shines though. This is not just a job for Darren, it is his hobby. This is a man that spends his weekends maintaining and prepping bikes for racing events and rebuilding models that date back to the 1970s. “The job is a good fit for me,” says Darren, and it is clear to see why. His recent qualification has built on his existing skillset, with assessments in technical drawing, electrical testing, pneumatics, hydraulics and advanced maths for engineers. “It’s been over 30 years since I last stepped inside a classroom,” admits Darren, “but it’s been a brilliant experience.” “It was always going to be a challenge, but my enthusiasm and experience working at TM has contributed massively to my development. It feels really good to work for a company that wants to invest in its staff and values the work we do. Because of TM Machinery, I’m now able to complete on-site machinery installations and offer on-site maintenance and repairs to our customers, while continuing to refurbish machinery. I get great job satisfaction out of my work, and knowing that I have a great team around me really adds to this.”

Made Smarter creates 60 digital leaders Furniture manufacturers prepare for the challenges of a digital future with leadership programme Two furniture manufacturers are among 60 firms pursuing smarter manufacturing through Made Smarter’s innovative leadership programme. Pendle Doors, based in Darwen, Lancashire, and Inscape Interiors, a manufacturer of commercial cubicles, washrooms and fitted furniture, based in Chorley, Lancashire, were among the trailblazing businesses to embark on the programme. Sixty digital leaders now have the vision and the skills after five cohorts of managers and directors at SME manufacturing companies completed the Made Smarter Leadership Programme through the Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), the University of Liverpool (UoL) and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). The programme encourages current and future leaders to develop a new way of looking at their business and create a clear strategy to enable the adoption of digital technology, including how that can drive the net-zero agenda. It uses a blend of workshops delivered by academics and experts in digital and leadership, site visits to SME manufacturers which are already on the journey of adopting digital technology, facilitated-learning sessions, and special project ‘sprints’ to test new ideas. The programme also uses peer-to-peer coaching to create a trusted network of leaders, many of whom have remained in close contact. With 60 SME leaders now empowered to transform their businesses, manufacturers across the North West are now being encouraged to register their interest for the next

cohort intake, which started on 10th November at Lancaster University. Reflecting on the success of the programme, Donna Edwards, director of the Made Smarter Adoption Programme in the North West, says: “I am delighted that the leadership programme has helped create 60 new digital leaders by giving them time out of their business to reflect on the bigger picture and share ideas and experiences alongside their peers in manufacturing, and then return to their own business and develop a digital strategy to create growth and efficiencies. “They are among hundreds of manufacturers in the region grasping the opportunities offered by Made Smarter, which include expert, impartial technology advice, digital transformation

workshops to help take that first step to transform a business, funded digital technology internships, and support with technology adoption projects.

Paul Mills, Inscape Interiors

“I would encourage SME manufacturers to make contact with Made Smarter to find out how we can help with leadership development, skills, and how to adopt technology the right way.” The programme, which takes place over eight months, includes seven workshops led by both academics delivering leading-edge thinking and business practitioners demonstrating adoption in real business settings. Delegates will also embark on ‘sprints’ where they will test their ideas with other business leaders to build engagement and learn from each other.

Professor Angus Laing, Dean of Lancaster University Management School, says: “When we co-created the leadership programme with Made Smarter, our hope was to create a space for leaders to build their confidence, capacity and capability, to identify, test and adopt new technologies. “It is clear from the feedback from so many of the leaders from the five cohorts who have now embarked on this programme that

they have reaped great benefit from taking vital time away from the business to develop a strategy to adopt hi-tech and digitally based manufacturing techniques into their own production processes, while bringing employees and other stakeholders along on their digital transformation journey.” Registration for the next leadership programme is now open. www.madesmarter.uk

New HOMAG woodWOP software makes wood processing effortless With the release of the latest generation of woodWOP in Q4 2021, HOMAG has dramatically improved the functionality of its market-leading CNC programming software. This most recent edition is branded woodWOP 8. Unparalleled success story The woodWOP success story began with its launch in 1991 and its development now spans over 30 years. The success of the woodWOP software is arguably unparalleled within the wood processing industry. Since its launch, more than 30,000 CNC machines have been equipped with woodWOP and 60,000 licenses have been sold to satisfied customers. At the heart of this easy-to-use software is the innovative large graphic area in which the workpiece is displayed in three dimensions. Trimming and drilling or saw cuts are programmed quickly and easily by entering the machining parameters and are displayed realistically in the graphic. Significant development leap made in collaboration with professional carpenters HOMAG has always excelled at involving its customers in the improvement of its products. This collaboration has been continued with the further enhancements of the woodWOP software. HOMAG’s product development team worked closely with professional carpenters to evaluate the developmental requirements of the software to produce woodWOP 8. The newly developed software now provides woodworkers with practical wizards for easier processing. This has made working with the woodWOP software more convenient, userfriendly and ultimately faster than working with its predecessor. Key innovations of woodWOP 8 at a glance 1. Contour wizard provides improved support for beginners New workpieces can be programmed more conveniently. For example, template files will be stored for circles, L-shapes or other curved components. This has a significant advantage in terms of time savings and it reduces novice operator problems. 2. Feature recognition for the automatic attribute identification With the feature recognition technology holes, grooves and slots are directly recognised in a 3-D workpiece model. The appropriate

machining macro is generated for automatic subsequent machining. This represents a significant acceleration in the conversion from CAD import to the machining program. The optimal use of existing data is also ensured. 3. Formula view and additional help graphics to simplify operation The woodWOP 8 programming process is faster and easier than before, with incorrect operation minimised. The software’s variable table has also been extended and upgraded to deliver new operational possibilities. Minimum and maximum values can be defined, selection lists can be created and help graphics can be stored for illustration. New properties such as ‘Hide’ (hide line) and ‘Boolean’ (input via checkbox) along with two views – the list view and form view – make programming clearer. 4. Glueing wizard for efficient edgebanding The glueing wizard is integrated directly into woodWOP 8. With this wizard, all work steps for edgebanding are generated automatically after defining the contours and corners. The revised technology database provides support for situation-dependent inputs, C-angles and heating power. The import of edge images from external CAD systems is also possible with the new wizard. So an even faster creation of programs with edge glueing is ensured. 5. Formula wizard for the easy creation of complex formulas The new formula wizard makes creating formulas extremely easy. The user has everything in view in the multi-line formula field. Building blocks such as mathematical

functions, variables and conditions are at the user’s fingertips for assembling his formulas. The formula components are highlighted in colour. This means that even complex formulas are clearly displayed. In addition to the formula result, partial results can also be calculated. These useful features support the simple creation of extensive and variable programs. Mass changes to macros for quick and easy adjustments With the transfer of parameter values, mass changes to macros can be made quickly and easily in just four steps, as outlined below: 1. Make changes in a macro. 2. Transfer one or all parameters to the parameter clipboard. 3. Select all other macros to be changed. 4. Insert the parameter value(s). Significant improvements and added value Commenting on the new software, Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s managing director said: “The development of the woodWOP software has been incredibly well thought out. The new and updated functions of the software make wood processing operations safer, easier and quicker. “The latest version brings great added value and, like all previous editions of woodWOP, is intuitive to use. A notable increase in functionality, along with time-saving operation characterise the new woodWOP 8 software.” For more information on woodWop 8, visit the news section of the HOMAG UK website to watch the presentation video and download the product brochure. Looking back on a record year Considering the obstacles and challenges that seemed to constantly pop up in 2020, the fact that forklift manufacturer Combilift had a record year is a cause for celebration and proof that certain sectors are experiencing healthy growth. Company CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar attributes some of this success to the relentless rise of ecommerce – already noticeable pre-pandemic but which has mushroomed in the last year or so. For some manufacturing and retail sectors, working from home drove demand for certain products, as did the lack of opportunities to travel, which saw rising spending on home comforts and garden accessories, which in turn had a knock-on effect on Combilift’s order books. “In 2020 we produced a record 6830 units, and our predicted truck order intake for 2021 is at an all-time high,” says Martin. A quick look back over 2021 proves that, as ever, the engineers and the R&D department in Monaghan were busy. In February the launch of the new AME-OP order picker was announced, and this variant of the Aisle Master articulated forklift will be much appreciated by companies that are under pressure to get orders processed, picked and delivered as quickly as possible. This is a stand-on electric powered truck, a main feature of which is the step-through operator compartment. The low floor height of just 280mm enables convenient, single-step access from both sides of the truck, which speeds up order picking compared to the operator having to get in and out from a seated position. Crucially, for maximum versatility, the AME-OP offers all the key advantages of the conventional Aisle Master – indoor/outdoor operation for loading/offloading and for stock replenishment at other times during shifts when order picking is not required.

As reported throughout the year, many Combilift users are switching to electric fleets for environmental and sustainability reasons, and Combilift’s expanding range of electric models is helping customers to reduce their carbon footprint. The first electric C-Series truck was built over 18 years ago, and now more than 60% of the manufactured units are electric, with availability in almost all models across the range. The new Combi-XLE was launched in September, and this multi-directional forklift with up to five-ton lift capacity combines quiet, emission-free operation with powerful

performance for a wide range of industries and applications. Since electric-powered trucks do not have traditional combustion engines, or hydraulic transmissions, there is no longer any need to check and top up engine fluids/ lubricants, resulting in longer intervals between services, ultimately saving costs. Looking forward now and not back, Combilift is exhibiting at W22 in February, so at long last there will be an opportunity to catch up once again with the team at the NEC – stand G700 – and to check out new Combilift products up close and personal. www.combilift.com

Business Sentiment Index (BSI) – optimism at record levels The Close Brothers Asset Finance Business Sentiment Index (BSI) has continued to rebound, rising to record levels as confidence returns to key sectors – most notably in manufacturing, which broke through the 40-point mark for the first time, in spite of the well-publicised supply chain delays, slower new order growth and rising material and labour shortages. According to the monthly purchasing managers’ index, manufacturing production increased for the 16th consecutive month, and jobs growth was registered for the ninth month running. Manufacturers remained positive for the year ahead, with nearly two thirds of firms predicting their output would increase during the coming 12 months, compared to 6% expecting a contraction. This confident outlook was attributed to recoveries in both domestic and global markets, reduced difficulties from supply chains, Covid-19 and Brexit, and planned new product launches. Challenges facing manufacturers include production schedules being disrupted by a combination of input shortages, longer supplier lead times and capacity constraints, including difficulties with staff shortages and hiring staff with the required skills. Average vendor lead times also increased significantly because of delays to air, land and sea freight, staff shortages, COVID-19 and Brexit disruptions, a lack of delivery drivers, and port delays.

About the BSI The BSI is calculated and based on business owners’: • appetite for investment in their business in the coming 12 months • access to finance and whether they have missed a business opportunity through lack of available finance • views about the UK’s economic outlook, and • thoughts on their likely performance in the coming 12 months Appetite for investment Firms’ appetite to invest increased strongly, returning the sector’s strongest figures ever

recorded for this measure. More than three quarters of respondents indicated that they plan to seek funding for business investment in the coming 12 months. Looking ahead at potential headwinds, 65.3% of manufacturers have pinpointed Brexit as a cause of concern, saying it has made it both more difficult to buy from – and sell to – the EU. Missed opportunities Nearly half of manufacturing firms have missed a business opportunity because of a lack of available finance, despite the availability of Government-backed loans. Many businesses now require additional finance to enable them to invest in growth and continue their recovery. Cashflow is, by some distance, the biggest concern manufacturers currently have, with 34% selecting the option. This is followed by competitive pressure, late payments (both 14%) and the lack of skills staff (10%). Economic outlook Positivity about the economic outlook continued to rebound after a strong increase earlier in the year. Over half of manufacturers (52%) expect the economy will continue to grow, while a further third anticipate a ‘slow path to prosperity’. Only 7% feel there has not been any real economic growth. Predicted business performance After a surge in business growth confidence in April, 44% of manufacturers predict their operations will expand, up from 39%. Nearly half (46%) think they will ‘stay the same’ into 2022 – only 9% foresee a contraction. www.closeassetfinance.co.uk

Edging Supplies

Edging Supplies was formed in July 2018 by Kal Sandhu and Derrick Gray. Based in Malvern, Worcestershire, the company was set up to supply the furniture manufacturing industry with edgebanding and ancillary products. With over 25 years’ involvement in this market and a good customer base built up over many years, Kal and Derrick were well placed to set themselves up – so long as they had a good supplier base behind them. Edging Supplies’ major supply partner is TECE, based in Turkey. TECE, which was established in 1987 and is known as a major producer and supplier of edgebanding worldwide, has supported Edging Supplies since its conception. It is with suppliers like TECE and many more that the business is able to give such a high level of service and support to its customer base. Edging Supplies’ ethos of quality, service and reliability is closely aligned with its suppliers in this ever-demanding world. Edging Supplies has a comprehensive range of edgebandings and ancillary products which it stocks at its warehouse in Malvern. There are over 400 product lines and more than two million

metres of edgebanding, all available on a nextday delivery. Edging Supplies holds a range of products, from ABS, PVC, melamine, and veneer edgebandings to ancillary products such as selfadhesive cover caps, repair waxes, edgebander adhesives and panel cleaners. sales@edgingsuppliesltd.co.uk www.edgingsuppliesltd.co.uk Kal Sandhu 07384 810271 kal@edgingsuppliesltd.co.uk Derrick Gray 07384 810106 derrick@edgingsuppliesltd.co.uk

Impressive AES-based turnkey operation for leading joinery business SJS Joinery provides creative and mostly bespoke solutions for architects, designers and property developers. Needing to improve its capability and flexibility, they called on a trusted partner to create a completely new process. John Legg visited to see how things were changing for the Liverpool joinery firm.

With a vision to provide around 1000 kitchens per year as well as other creative capabilities, Specialist Joinery Services (SJS) required a totally flexible solution to cater for the increasingly challenging demands from its designer and architect clientele. Having previously worked with J & C O’Meara based in nearby Ormskirk, SJS reached out to their MD, Carl O’Meara, to carry out an initial appraisal based on their requirements. “Having worked with SJS MD Ian McMurray previously, I had a fair appreciation of the type of output they produce and the clientele they work with, and it was clear to me that they would significantly benefit from a CNC nesting

machine – and other solutions allied to that – which combined would add another level of capability and flexibility to their successful business,” explains Carl. Mindful of investing in the technology that would accurately reflect its customers needs, SJS researched its clients’ current and likely future requirements before moving forward, and it was clear to Ian and the SJS team that a more efficient machining solution was needed. After a considerable period researching possible alternative options, SJS made the decision to once again invest and move forward with J & C O’Meara and its impressive AES range.

The key to the new set-up was the AES Extreme 2132 Automatic Nesting Line machine, an impressive, heavy-duty CNC nesting machine designed for optimum precision, productivity and reliability. The version at SJS features a lift table, automatic bed cleaning, automatic removal of nested sheet and automatic conveyor removal on the outfeed. The machine was specified with two Becker 250m3 vacuum pumps, 10 HSD vertical drills, a 9Kw HSD router head and a 12-position rotary toolchanger. In addition, an AES Sirius 950M CNC drilling machine was also part of the investment package. The combination of the nesting machine and the drilling machine provides SJS with the ultimate flexibility, allowing cabinets to be constructed to any preference, from face

fixings, to screwed and cam and dowel. For true handle-less, it is also far easier to cut the notches on the Sirius, being equipped as it is with a router head. Alongside this, SJS also required additional and more flexible edging options, so a Cehisa Pro 12 edgebander was also ordered. SJS decided a more efficient and flexible edgebanding solution was needed because not only did they need to cater for standard-style edges, 0.4-2mm in thickness, but they also wanted the ability to apply a solid wood edge up to 8mm thick using PUR glue. The machine was also supplied with the nesting solution, allowing the panels to be edged successfully even if they have been pre-drilled, typically when edging doors which have the 35mm diameter hinge hole already in place. To execute the company’s vision and product design, SJS had long relied on the skills of a master draughtsman, who, at the time of my visit, was looking forward to taking a step back

Examples of SJS’ impressive joinery work

SJS Joinery MD, Ian McMurray

“The whole project from start to completion was professionally handled by Carl and his team” and enjoying a well-earned retirement and time with his wife. Although it was also envisaged that the working relationship would likely continue on a consultancy basis, the design side of SJS needed to move forward to cope with the anticipated additional workload. Once again, J & C O’Meara provided the answers. “We supplied SJS with a CAD parametric cabinet design package to allow the quick and easy design from a single cabinet through to a full kitchen,” explains Carl. “The cabinet design is then broken down into component form then run through Alphacam Standard Automation Manager to create an optimised nest for the AES Extreme 2132 nesting line. The Polyboard software also allows users to select the preferred fixing methodology allowing any parts requiring end-drilling to be processed and run through the AES Sirius 950M CNC drilling machine. When creating the nest, the relevant data can be printed out with each part labelled manually, including part orientation for easy identification

during secondary processing such as drilling or edgebanding.” In terms of woodwaste management at SJS, with the introduction of the new machinery it was found that the existing bag-style dust units were not going to be adequate. “We supplied a centralised 16,000m3/h multifilter dust unit – with a clever part separator to prevent small offcuts being pulled into the fan – complete with automatic shaker for filter cleaning. Needless to say, this is proving to be an optimum solution for SJS at this time. “It was also decided that instead of manually having to remove and handle the waste, the dust unit would be integrated directly with a briquette machine, with the briquettes being used as fuel for the company’s existing woodburning space heaters. The briquetter supplied was capable of processing up to 100 kg/hr of woodwaste and is suitable for compacting MDF/MFC dust generated from the CNC, as well as joinery waste produced by the traditional machines,” points out Carl.

“The complete order was project managed working closely with SJS from initial consultation, through to the design and planning of floorplan for optimised workflow, to delivery, off-loading, assembling, commissioning and training.” This was a substantial installation, and from initial visits to understand the customer’s requirements through to completion, this is becoming typical of a calibre of full, turnkey projects J & C O’Meara offers. SJS MD Ian McMurray concludes: “The whole project from start to completion was professionally handled by Carl and his team – and I know I can rely on the J & C team whatever my woodworking machinery requirements to give me valuable advice and insight which gives my business the necessary production cpabilities to enable me to staisfy the needs of my clients. I can’t recommend Carl and his team highly enough!” 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

JJ Smith helps Shoalwater Timber Frame increase productivity by +25% Located in the south-east of Ireland, Shoalwater Timber Frame is a leading timber frame manufacturer specialising in the production of passive houses. The company was established in 1999 with a vision to produce high-quality timber-frame (TF) houses, which at that time was a new concept in Ireland but attracting a lot of interest. It was soon approached by a local building contractor which, in conjunction with Wexford County Council, set out to design and manufacture an affordable housing scheme. Shoalwater was the only TF company in for tender and, despite being in a market dominated by concrete, won the contract. The rest is history, with the company continuing to lead the industry in this ever-expanding and important building sector. In order to meet increasing production requirements, Shoalwater recently took delivery of a new Stromab CT600 fully programmable crosscut saw, for making straight or angled cuts for its frame components. Supplied by exclusive UK and Ireland agent, JJ Smith, the machine has now been in operation for several months, and Shoalwater has been very pleased with how things have gone. “First off I would just like to say a quick few words to thank all the guys at JJ Smith for their exceptional service during the purchase and installation phases of our new Stromab CT600,” comments director, Donal Mullins. “This is not our first time dealing with JJ Smith, as we purchased our original Stromab saw from Martin

Stromab CT600 for angled cutting

Shoalwater director, Alan Walsh

Smith a few years ago. Despite being worked very hard day in, day out, it has rarely has given us any trouble. However, we were limited to straight cutting only.” Donal goes on to add: “As with all businesses, it was time to improve our productivity, both in speed and accuracy, and to find a machine that gives us the variability to process up to 95% of

our components at the one workstation. After some excellent information and advice from JJ Smith sales director, Ian Stanley, we purchased the CT600, which was expertly installed by their technician, Alan Reid. “To say it has reached our expectations would be an understatement. Programming is extremely easy – the saw is quick and you have the option of reducing or increasing the run speed depending on what the cutting process is. We had the flexibility of ordering a 7m infeed capacity pusher, which has worked out really well. In addition, as the machine comes with an enhanced software optimisation package, our waste has also reduced significantly. “There are many other positives I could mention, but this machine has been a massive gamechanger for Shoalwater, currently increasing the speed of our processing by up to +25%, and we are still learning faster ways of utilising this great piece of equipment”. Ian Stanley comments: “It was a pleasure to work with Donal and his team on this project, and we are delighted that the new Stromab CT600 has exceeded their expectations and is making such a big difference to their production. We look forward to working with them again in the future.” 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

The benefits of the Wadkin Bursgreen wall saw/vertical panel saw

A panel saw is a basic machine that everybody working within the woodworking industry would need in their workshop to convert various panel products. The classic panel saw is the sliding table panel saw, with a wide worktable and large footprint. The vertical panel saw – or wall saw – has become very popular, too, as an alternative to the traditional sliding table panel saw. This article examines the main advantages to customers considering the vertical panel saw, from the Wadkin Bursgreen team’s perspective. What is a vertical panel saw? The vertical panel saw, or wall saw as it is better known, has long been a valuable space-saving option for space-starved workshops. The panel to be cut remains static throughout, and the saw head and saw beam travel vertically or horizontally to perform the cut with ease. The advantages of a vertical panel saw Space saved is one of the biggest benefits. At under 7m2, the wall saw compares well to a 3.2m sliding table saw which uses 35m2 of valuable floor space. There are a lot of workshops with restrictive space, and these vertical saws help them a lot.

Operation is another huge benefit. Generally, a one-man operator can work perfectly on their own. Cutting and loading this type of machine is easy for the operator, and the heavy-duty construction ensures they are very accurate. If the operator needs assistance loading the machine with large, heavy sheets, this can still be achieved with another person, or with the purchase of a vacuum board lifter which helps with health and safety issues and lessens damage to the product and machine. There will be less stress on the operator as they will move the saw head not the heavy, awkward sheet. Another benefit is the cost of this machine. Sometimes, for the size that you can cut on a vertical panel saw, they are cheaper than some panel saws of the same size. Wadkin Bursgreen wanted to provide a very good-quality wall saw for its customers, with the best Wadkin Bursgreen tradition, but keeping it at an affordable price. The premium and standard machines are very competitive with the company’s competitors. Though more of a consideration than a direct benefit, the Wadkin Bursgreen team feels that it makes sense for customers looking for a wall saw to consider the delivery and installation of

the machine. In their view, it is vital that the company from whom you buy a saw offers you a complete service – it is important that skilled engineers install your machine. Wadkin Bursgreen has Wadkin Bursgreen vertical saws and sliding table panel saws in stock. sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

SCM’s Smart&Human Factory for Star River Bay Group

One of the most recent lean cells developed by SCM in the last few years has arrived in China at one of the country’s giants in the contract sector. It is an integrated flexible line of more than 2000m2 for the production of furniture components, installed in the early months of 2021 for the Star River Bay Group and its new YuFeng Factory established in Conghua, Guangdong. It is its technological configuration that makes this solution especially advanced in terms of automation and production flexibility – a concrete example of Smart&Human Factory devised by SCM to meet the needs and critical situations of mass customisation. The Chinese group, a giant with a turnover of €2b, needed to invest in new factories to

internally produce contract furniture for its tourist and commercial structures. This is how the YuFeng Factory project came about – an impressive 200,000m2 space for machining wood, incorporating 11 warehouses over three floors, with each one specialising in a specific product area. For this new and ambitious project, SCM supplied not only an integrated flexible line for the production of cabinet components, but also five Superfici lines for painting and another 50 standalone technologies for different fields of application, representative of SCM’s vast and varying range. An integrated flexible line for the production of cabinet components Top precision, automation and production

flexibility are the backbone of the Smart&Human plant, developed by SCM for an average production of 1000/1200 pieces/shift. The line includes cells for nesting, edgebanding and drilling, all managed by Maestro active watch supervision software. This allows for the production process to be managed and controlled by monitoring the status of the individual machines in real time and of the whole line, optimising production performance. Area nesting This cell sees two machining centres in action for ‘morbidelli x200’ state-of-the-art nesting that combines top speed with maximum flexibility in the cutting outlines of the panel. Both are fitted with input roller conveyors with a QR code labelling system.

45

Once the nesting is completed, the cut-tosize panels are directed towards two outgoing conveyor belts. A first articulated robot picks up the panels one by one to be unloaded at an average speed of 4.5 pieces per minute. A second robot sorts the panels and directs them either towards the edgebanding area or, in the case of subsequently recovered scraps, to an offloading storage station – ‘porcupine’. Edgebanding area This area features a ‘stefani cell H+’, synonymous with maximum personalisation, top productivity levels and excellent machining quality. This highly flexible cell means the various parameters of the panel (shape, thickness, edge, gluing quality, etc) can be changed without stopping the production flow. The ‘stefani cell H+’ is preceded by a 30-level vertical buffer that acts as a store for depositing the incoming panels from the nesting area and is integrated with a ‘mahros brush’ automatic loading station and by another ‘mahros brush’ outgoing unloading and panel-return device. The process functions like a closed machining cycle – each time an individual edge is completed, the piece is unloaded from the line while other pieces will complete the process. This optimises and speeds up the machining of panels with different edges.

Drilling area Once the edgebanding is completed, the panels are conveyed in two 30-level vertical buffers that once again act as a ‘plenum’ (holding area) between the edgebanding cell and the subsequent drilling area. In order to guarantee higher production levels here, the client has selected to install two lines operating in parallel, both made up of a highly flexible automatic drilling centre and ideal for batch 1, ‘morbidelli ux200’. After drilling, the panels leave and converge in a single roller transporter that transfers them to a machine designated to cleaning the surface. Subsequently, all the pieces are transported to the sorting station. Sorting and unloading area This area in the line developed by SCM is strategic. It is at this fully automated sorting station that, based on the information supplied by the factory MES, the individual orders are put back together, and the customisation of the

cabinets’ components is completed. This advanced storage system is made up of two articulate robots that work at a speed of 3.5 pieces per minute, two multi-storey warehouses and a system with double-layer roller conveyor that allows the pieces to be received from the drilling machine and simultaneously sent to the unloading area. When all the components in an order arrive in the warehouse, the MES software gives the order – the components are directed towards the unloading area where, thanks to another two robots, they will be placed in transfer trolleys. These are manually moved to the packing line, where the MES software co-ordinates the work of those in charge of packing so that each box is well balanced in terms of weight and final size. With this solution, SCM has managed not only to meet the needs of Star River Bay Group, but supply a highly innovative plant in line with the most advanced demands made by the Chinese market. www.scmgroup.com

“I just wish I’d bought one sooner!” A manufacturing company in Kent has purchased a woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Pandor is a bespoke door and panel manufacturer, making fire doors, acoustic doors, panelling and door frames to order. The company was established in 2014 and operates from an industrial unit in Sittingbourne. Like many manufacturing companies, Pandor was hiring skips each week to take away its manufacturing waste, and having to use space heaters to offset the cold of the workshop in winter. As a result, the management team decided to invest in a new woodwaste heater which could solve both those issues, while saving the company money. “It just made sense to invest in a woodwaste heater!” Says the MD of Pandor, Mike Hill. “I’d seen other companies use them, so they’ve been on my wishlist for a while, but now just seemed the right time to invest in one, rather than keep paying for services like waste disposal and heating.” A bit of research led Mike to Wood Waste Technology, which comes highly recommended for its British-made woodwaste heaters. After a quote and site survey, Pandor ordered a WT10 heater, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers in February this year. Mike says: “Buying a woodwaste heater is such a sensible decision as it offers such good value for money. I just wish I’d bought one sooner! The team at Wood Waste Technology was so helpful, and the heater is fantastic. “We’ve put in the biggest heater we had space for, as we generate so much waste wood every week, and we really wanted to reduce our reliance on skips and how much waste we send to landfill. I’d highly recommend that any woodrelated manufacturing businesses investigate the benefits of investing in a woodwaste heater.”

MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “We’re delighted to have helped Pandor save money on heating and waste disposal. “We’re happy to have a noobligation chat with any business who is looking into alternative solutions, to help people understand whether it’s the right investment to make.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of woodwaste heaters,

from small, hand-fired units to larger, fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of woodwaste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau – a German manufacturer of

dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems. This powerful yet gentle routine maintenance solution is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

UK woodworkers leap into the future of manufacturing with Microvellum software For more than 20 years, the CAD/CAM/CIM technology specialists at Microvellum have been dedicated to improving efficiencies and expanding capabilities for woodworkers utilising their highly customisable, AutoCADbased software. The open architecture platform has been developed to optimise the workflows between estimators, designers, drafters, engineers and production teams, reducing redundancies and maximising efficiencies for wood product manufacturing. 2D and 3D architectural drawings created with the system include embedded production data, allowing for the seamless creation of manufacturing reports and programs for automated machinery. When Martek, a professional joinery and fit-out contractor based in Croydon, was asked about how Microvellum had streamlined its design workflows, MD Derek Galloway replied: “We work with a lot of architects. The fact that Microvellum is essentially an extension of AutoCAD provides us with a seamless transition from the design and approval stage, right into the production stage of a project.” Typical users of Microvellum’s software include companies producing architectural joinery, residential cabinetry including kitchens, bathrooms, and bedroom furniture, as well as commercial interior fit-outs for office, hospitality, education and healthcare environments. John Fallowfield, owner of Shopfit UK and MIPOD Solutions, recently said this about his experience of using the system: “With Microvellum, we have the power to design and engineer what we want, and how our clients want it built. It has equipped us with the confidence to tackle any project, in any market, no matter the complexity.” The platform includes built-in toolsets and algorithms that can help eliminate the need for secondary CAM software for part programming, tool pathing, scrap management, part labelling and other related manufacturing activities. When asked about how Microvellum impacted their business, representatives from Unitech Oxon, a family-run kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer based out of Banbury, said: “Implementing Microvellum was a gamechanger. Not only did it help us provide more flexible options for our customers, but it also helped move us into the future of manufacturing, where everything is centralised and connected. We can make changes to any product, and, with the click of a button, our production team has the updated CNC code, drawings, and reports.” The Microvellum team is comprised of

individuals with deep roots in the wood industry, many of whom have extensive woodworking experience and are former end-users of the software. They are dedicated to equipping people with the tools and knowledge to streamline the way they work. Scott Purdom, owner of Lamin8 Scotland and Robert Sinclair Interiors, a Scotland-based manufacturer focused on residential and commercial products, had this to say about their integration of the software: “Microvellum has changed the way we do business. Their staff in the UK have not only assisted us to get the best out of our software and machinery, but their extensive knowledge of manufacturing has also helped us to streamline our operations, enabling us to be more professional and efficient.” Microvellum is headquartered in Oregon, US, and is proud to currently boast over 6000

users worldwide, with the majority located in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US. The company’s expansion into the UK market with support, service, and sales teams started in the spring of 2020, and continues to be a primary target for the company’s growth plan. “As an end-user of the software for over 15 years, I have experienced the transformational impact of Microvellum. If you’re looking for new ways to maximise your efficiencies and grow, you need to consider what a Microvellum solution can do for your business.” concludes Daniel Mesecke, UK account manager at Microvellum. Holz-Her’s Streamer 1057 XL edgebander is already eliminating the need for the community to iron edgings on by hand

Weinig UK partners With BloQs Leading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Weinig UK, has announced a new partnership with BloQs – a not-forprofit organisation based in Enfield, North London. The business model, which centres around a shared workspace that is available for furnituremakers, joiners, carpenters and designers to rent, provides small business owners with the machinery, training and support needed to grow their business. Al Parra, co-founder of BloQs, explains: “Space is a valuable commodity in London, and small and start-up businesses are often priced out of the market when looking for suitable workspaces. Then there’s the cost of equipment. For many, it’s simply not financially viable to invest in the latest machinery or technology to assist them in their work. That’s where BloQs comes in. “As London’s biggest makerspace designed for the professional maker, our members can book a workspace that is exclusively theirs and have access to machines and equipment that would otherwise be out of their reach. Members can simply book a time slot on any of our digital machines – following a compulsory safety assessment and optional one-to-one training – giving them complete flexibility to come and go as they please.”

The new 32,000ft2 workspace will house five new machines from Weinig UK and sister-brand Holz-Her UK

53

“For us, we saw this partnership as a way of giving something back to the industry, nurturing new talent and helping facilitate people’s journeys within it” In recent years, BloQs – whose premises sit within a £6b regeneration area – has been awarded £1.35m by the GLA, which was matchfunded by Enfield Council. “This award has given us the means to grow so we can support thousands of makers and creators across a range of disciplines,” says Al. “The capacity of our new home means we’ve been able to forge a new relationship with renowned machinery manufacturer, Weinig UK. With their support, we are able to offer our members even more access to state-of-the-art machinery that has the potential to open up a whole new realm of possibilities for them.” The new partnership comes as construction on a new, purpose-built building to home BloQs nears completion. garden, shop and event space, will house five new machines from Weinig UK and sister brand, Holz-Her UK, each with varying levels of automation, bridging the gap between its existing, traditional woodworking machinery and the very latest innovations in solid wood and panel processing. A three-axis Dynestic 7505 flatbed CNC and five-axis Pro-Master 7125 CNC will be positioned alongside a Sector 1254 vertical panel saw and Weinig Cube Plus four-sided planer. Members will also have access to a Streamer 1057 XL edgebander, eliminating the need for the community to iron edgings on by hand. Malcolm Cuthbertson, MD of Michael Weinig (UK) says: “We immediately got a sense that the founders of BloQs wanted more than just machinery from their machinery supplier. They wanted a partnership that would return longevity and ultimately, a company that would invest in their vision.

“For us, we saw this partnership as a way of giving something back to the industry, nurturing new talent and helping facilitate people’s journeys within it. And what better way for us to engage with the woodworking community than by supplying them with the very latest technology on the very best machines? “This gives us an opportunity to showcase our machinery to a wider audience, and for them to get first-hand experience using it. For us, it’s a brilliant opportunity to invest in our industry’s future and those working in it, and we’re excited to see new and existing members take full advantage of BloQs’ new machinery line-up.” Machinery installations are now nearing completing, with the opening of the new premises set for December 2021. Surfacing & Decorative Panels

New updates for the EGGER Decorative Collection The EGGER Decorative Collection 202022 is a designer’s dream, offering the very best decors and textures, with a focus on the latest design trends. This collection is extensive, incorporating high-end finishes and reproductions that were well received when the collection was launched in February 2020. Now EGGER is adding eight new decors to enhance its Decorative Collection. These carefully chosen designs feature bold tones and textures, proving once again that EGGER is continually at the forefront of the decorative market.

Panelco always commits to EGGER’s UK Decorative Collection, including any additions that it feels stand out to enhance the offer. The PerfectSense range is a prime example of this – Panelco added 10 additional decors on top of the standard collection to give additional variety and design options. That being said, Panelco has decided to add a further decor alongside the eight new EGGER decors that were due to launch at the beginning of December. Antique Rose U325 ST9 is a soft, dusky pink uni-colour that blends with a variety of decors, from grey tones to subtle woodgrains,

and also combines well with matt black for a modern look. Panelco has observed green as a flourishing colour trend, favoured for its natural look and feel. The company is starting to see this shade feature in kitchens, bedrooms, offices and furniture as a way to bring the outside in. This trend is not surprising given the recent increase in people working from home. EGGER has recognised this, and is adding three striking new greens to its collection, each carefully selected and chosen for its natural tones and ability to contrast and blend. One design in

55

particular that stands out is Fir Green U699 ST9, which symbolises the feel of nature people increasingly seek in their everyday lives. Alongside this, EGGER is introducing five new woodgrains which perfectly co-ordinate with the new uni-colours. Hints of green, grey and brown allow for blending and contrasting, and it is obvious that these colours have been carefully chosen to offer an array of design choices. The new woodgrains – H3180 ST37 Brown Halifax Oak, H3149 ST37 Smoked Riffan Oak, and H1186 ST37 Dark Brown Garonne Oak – are additions to the already successful EGGER Feelwood collection, a traditional range which replicates wood with its texture, look and versatility. H3422 ST19 Brown Grey Urban Pine and H1371 ST19 Grey Beige Rift Oak feature the ST19 structure, a close reflection of veneers which create a high-end look and feel but with all the added benefits of melamine and chipboard. Brown Grey Urban Pine H3422 ST19 is a beautifully crafted mixture of varying tones, which suits so many styles – ideal for use in the kitchen or bedroom. For Panelco, these eight new decors highlight a growing trend of mix and match decors to create a flowing interior, or a stand-out piece. The EGGER Decorative Collection offering remains one of the largest selections of carefully crafted decors. Panelco is firmly committed to stocking the full collection, so interested parties should get in touch for information about all of the new designs available. The full UK collection is held ex-stock in 18mm, with matching edging tape in both 2mm and 0.8mm, including the new decors. 01782 392100 www.panelco.com/egger-2021-update

58 SURFACING & DECORATIVE PANELS

New Quasar showroom ‘shows’ company at its best!

Covid-19 may have created many challenges, but it has provided one County Londonderry veneer company with a very positive opportunity. In September this year, Quasar took the opportunity to not only ‘take stock’ of its business, but to show it off in a brand-new veneer showroom. “Even prior to the onset of the pandemic, we had become aware of how quickly our business was expanding,” comments company owner, Alan Dickson, who had worked as a saw doctor for 44 years before deciding three years ago to specialise in surfacing and decorative panels. “Our business had already started to expand rapidly before the pandemic hit, but during the first lockdown it grew spectacularly. We were delighted by the unprecedented level of business, but it quickly became clear that we needed to offer our customers – both new and potential – an increased range of services, including the ability to see our fantastic panels on display.” The only problem that the company had was that its location, Shivers Business Park in Toomebridge, did not have any units available on site. Fortunately, fate stepped in when the adjoining unit became available in January 2021 and, unsurprisingly, Alan jumped at the opportunity to create the showroom. “The showroom enables customers to see and touch the quality of panels Quasar has to offer,” he says. “The sample panels are beautifully displayed on the walls of the expansive showroom and show our work off at its best.

“From our beautiful range of Natural, Dyed, Designer and Reconstituted veneers, every veneer is subjected to our perfect attention to detail and crafted into a range of fantastic surfacing and decorative panels that are sure to complement every domestic and commercial fit out!” Needless to say, Alan is delighted with both the showroom and the very positive response from the potential customers, who are travelling to it from all over the island of Ireland. “Everyone has said that the panels are really shown off to their best,” he says. “Even existing customers, who have already purchased our products, have said that they’re blown away by the ranges that we have on offer, and being shown them in this way simply adds to the attraction. “There’s no doubt that the showroom has given us a new, increased market share, and we anticipate that this will continue well into 2022 and beyond. Our order books are practically

overflowing but, as the only showroom in Ireland, we’re delighted to continue welcoming new and existing customers alike!” Customers who are already familiar with the beauty and style of Quasar’s craftwork, are equally delighted by the new showroom. “We’ve worked with Alan and his team at Quasar on quite a few occasions over the years,” comments James McErlean, MD of Alex Jane Ireland, which is based in the neighbouring village of Castledawson. “We’ve always been delighted by the quality of the products and the excellent level of customer service, but the showroom has really added a new dimension to the business. We’re constantly complimented by our customers about our decorative panels and it’s great that we’re able to signpost potential customers to the showroom.” 028 79 659694 marketing@wearequasar.com www.wearequasar.com

Lathams Launch Carbon Calculator Reducing our environmental impacts is one of the key issues of our time. However, there is a lack of understanding around the sustainability of the materials that we use. • The confidence Lathams has in the data that enabled these calculations (i.e. where it came from and whether it has been audited). Each product then receives a confidence rating from 1 – 4 (one being the highest, four being the lowest). The higher the score, the higher the quality of the data points that have been reviewed, e.g., a published EPD (Environmental Performance Declaration). However, even the lowest scoring products must still meet stringent supply requirements; the rating is more about whether the data is based on an estimate or actual performance.

Helping the market A helping hand is available from James Latham, which has carried out extensive research into the embodied and biogenic carbon impacts of the products that they supply. The result is a carbon calculator. Focusing on timber products, it covers just over 70% of the total Lathams range. In time, it will also incorporate composite materials.

How the tool works The tool uses publicly available data, including official data from manufacturers as well as a wider literature review. It calculates the environmental impacts by looking at: • The carbon footprint of the product (how much carbon is produced during its production and delivery to Lathams) • The carbon that has been removed from the atmosphere (via photosynthesis) and is stored within the wood’s structure (Biogenic carbon)

“We feel that this is the start of the journey for us as we seek to improve the approach to sustainability within our industry,” said Ewa Bazydlo, Environmental Manager at Lathams.

• A series of CPD seminars • The launch of “Think You Know Carbon?” – a detailed guide that includes an overview of the issues, terminology and steps that people can take to be more sustainable in their designs • A promotional campaign throughout winter to highlight sustainable products • A partnership with Futurebuild in March 2022

“We have been working closely with academic institutions, market leading suppliers, designers and developers to guide us through this process. We want to be sure that we can offer the right help and products to our customers, who are increasingly looking to understand this area.” Lathams is adding the carbon data to quotations, delivery notes, and other key documentation to increase visibility around this issue. The firm is also planning several promotional activities, including:

Bring harmony to interiors with Decorative Panels Lamination Over the many years since Decorative Panels Lamination pioneered the use of paper foils, considerable developments have been made which now see these products being used in a wide variety of marketplaces – from domestic, education and healthcare furniture manufacture to shopfitters and exhibition installation. The dp-decor range from Decorative Panels Lamination features the latest woodgrain, fantasy and uni-colour designs developed in conjunction with the leading printers in the world. Combining these finishes with the vast range of substrates – including MDF, chipboard and dp-lite (the company’s very own lightweight hollowcore product) – takes the dp-decor range to the next level. The latest addition to the dp-decor range is Marine Blue. Evoking the sea and sky, it gives interiors a sense of depth, warmth and elegance. This deeply rich, inky blue will never feel cold, and will give a touch of subtle elegance within any space, from homes and offices to public spaces.

Advancements in material technology within the printing industry has brought incredibly high levels of design realism and colour depth to the finished product. Digital technology used in the creation of the artwork and the engraving of the printing cylinders, plus the development of the optical lacquer technology, have contributed not only to the visual appeal of designs but have also added tactile qualities that have previously not been available. The surface resistance of paper foils has also increased, with the majority now being able to meet FIRA 6250 and BS6222 severe use – making them ideally suited for use in kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, on all but worktops. Of course, one of the significant advantages of using paper foil as a surface material is that, as well as being flat-laminated to board, it can be profile wrapped to provide fully matching parts. This creates the perfect solution for framed doors, corner posts, pelmets and any matching moulding requirements. Partnering with Addmaster (UK), who, with its Biomaster product range, pioneered the use of antimicrobial additives, Decorative Panels can now offer surfaces which inhibit the growth of bacteria by up to 99.99%. Decorative Panels has offered antimicrobial products within its portfolio for over eight years, but now, as can be imagined, the interest for these has accelerated. To cater for this demand, a much wider offering than before will be rolled out across the dp-group companies using sheet materials and edgebanding, which will offer the highest possible product protection, independently tested to ISO 22196.

Biomaster uses silver-based antibacterial additives, recognised for centuries to have no harmful effects, and already extensively used in medical, food and water applications. The inbuilt antimicrobial product protection does not wear off or leach out. The potential applications for

such products are vast and not limited to the healthcare environment. Decorative Panels can now meet the demand for increased levels of hygiene within all areas of everyday life. 01484 658341 info@decorativepanels.co.uk

Dust Extraction & Woodwaste Management

Flexible filtering from Dustraction When faced with a new factory unit to house its growing components manufacturing business, Oliveti Cubicles turned to a leading woodwaste extraction specialist, Dustraction, to provide a custom-built extraction solution for its new premises in Leicestershire. “We had simply outgrown our old premises in Willoughby and we needed more space if we were to continue working on such a broad range of construction projects,” begins Julian Beardsell, cubicles department manager at Oliveti Cubicles. “The old unit homed an old extraction system that was simply not up to the job anymore. It was out of date and we were spending increasing amounts of time trying

to keep the system healthy. It was clear that we couldn’t take the system with us. Instead, we needed to invest in a new, low-maintenance system that could offer us ongoing reliability, solid performance and room to grow.” With a six-year lease on its new premises in Leicester, Julian was also keen to futureproof his investment. “We have grown significantly since we began trading, and adding new machinery to our line-up is inevitable. With this in mind, we also needed a system that could offer us a minimum of +30% expansion.” This led the components company to Dustraction’s door. “I work with a lot of Leicestershirebased businesses and I was keen to use as many local companies

as I could during the relocation process,” says Julian. “I received quotes from several extraction specialists but Dustraction was my first and last port of call. I found them to be the best overall value. They were not necessarily the cheapest, but they offered a clear and concise package. They also gave me confidence in their abilities from the off, and offered the infrastructure needed to complete the job in a competitive timeframe.” The initial stages of the project required Dustraction to work closely with Oliveti Cubicles, and the first step was to create a workshop floor plan. In order for all criteria to be met – including the simultaneous use of an edgebander, dimension

saw, vertical spindle moulder and four-sided moulder – a Dustrax No 27 Series filter system was installed. The system itself, which has been designed to handle a total air volume of 3.32m³/sec (7035 cfm), utilises a tubular, sock-type filtering system, and comes complete with an automatic shaker cleaning mechanism. In order to fulfil Julian’s expansion requirements, the system’s modular bolted construction also allows for later fitting of further filter chambers, bagging base extensions and increased fan power. “Disruption to the team was minimal throughout the installation,” explains Julian. “Dustraction was working in an empty building and it didn’t have

an existing extraction system to work around. The only thing the team needed was electrical supplies to different parts of the equipment and access to hoists and positioning equipment. This allowed for the first stage of the installation to be completed in under six weeks, with the tails for each machine attached to the ducting, ready for the machines to be dropped into place.” It was at this point of the installation that the components manufacturer received an order that needed to be completed quickly. “We were just about ready

to start moving machinery into our new workshop when we were given a time-sensitive job to complete. This stopped the final stage of the installation being completed for over eight weeks.” Julian continues: “This is where Dustraction’s understanding, co-operation and experience came into play. They were happy to work around us and, when we were in a position to relocate, the second phase was done quickly and efficiently to limit any downtime. Each piece of machinery was connected as per the floorplan, and our technicians

and Dustraction’s engineers went through each machine, one-by-one, to make sure everything was in full working order. “Having the support from Dustraction at that stage of the installation was very important, and their flexible approach to the whole project made working with them a real pleasure. If I had to sum up my experience of working with Dustraction, I would have to say they were efficient, obliging and on budget!” 0116 271 3212 info@dustraction.co.uk www.dustraction.co.uk

COP that! “Well at the least, COP26 has grabbed the headlines in early November,” comments Chris Franklin, MD of Ranheat Engineering. “Greta Thunberg is now a household name. This young Swede (born in 2003) is now challenging world leaders to take immediate action for climate change. “Ranheat Engineering, the UK’s leading and longest-established manufacturer of industrial, wood-fired boilers and heaters, also has its roots in Scandinavia. Ranheat was originally founded in the town of Randers in Denmark over 50 years ago. “So, why did Danish technology lead the way? It wasn’t climate change that drove the development of biomass-burning boilers 50 years ago, it was lack of alternatives. The UK was an island of coal in a sea of oil and gas. “Denmark had no coal, no oil and no gas supply, but what Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia did have was biomass – originally in the form of straw and wood. “I worked for Ranheat Energy A/S in Denmark over 30 years ago. Originally, the products were made in Denmark, but production in the UK moved to Northamptonshire in 1990, so for over 30 years Ranheat’s products have been made in the UK. The growth of biomass-burning equipment in the UK was driven by escalating world oil prices, not by climate change, at that time. How different to now. “COP 26 has not put the use of biomass in a good light, with many references to Drax power station using wood that has travelled thousands of miles from Sweden or Canada or other faraway places, often by ship and lorry, to get it to site.

An early on-farm Ranheat boiler

“So how does this affect the UK’s woodworking industry? By making more products from wood, we help the environment in many ways. “Firstly, we are using a renewable resource to manufacture with. Take the case of wooden windows against UPVC. At the end of life, the wooden window can be turned into energy – not the case with plastics, often non-recyclable. Furthermore, the waste material from the manufacturing process can be used to heat the production unit. This means that all the timber is either turned into product or used for energy. “So, world leaders should be encouraging wood as a chosen material over other nonrecyclable materials or materials that have a

high carbon footprint to manufacture – bricks and concrete, for example. “Holland recently announced that 20% of new homes to be built in Amsterdam are to be made from wood. It is claimed that this will reduce the city’s carbon emissions by 220,000 tonnes per year. “All companies in the UK wood-manufacturing industry should be promoting wood as the material to use for construction of buildings, homes, furniture, and fittings. This will help create a sustainable industry that can be seen to be doing its part to reduce the effects of global warming. “Over the last 30 years, Ranheat has developed industrial, wood-fired boilers and heaters that can burn all wood and wood-based products efficiently, including natural timber, chipboard, MFC, MDF and plywood, in either the form of extracted sawdust and shavings or granulate from a wood-chipper. “As well as utilising the by-product effectively, it also cuts down on transport of having to take away waste from a manufacturing site for disposal, so cutting out emissions from lorries in doing so. “Ceramic flue gas filtration also removes harmful particulate, and wood contains no sulphur. By correct design of the combustion system NOx and CO are also minimised. “So, the use of biomass correctly will have a good effect on climate change. The UK woodworking industry can help Greta meet her targets – every little helps!” 01604 750005 www.ranheat.com

J&C O’Meara has continued success with SAF Teknik’s dust extraction solutions SAF Teknik manufactures a complete range of dust extraction machinery, from the mobile single-bag units through to large capacity multi-fan dust units. In 2018, J&C O’Meara introduced the very first AES/SAF dust unit into the UK. It was supplied with one of the AES Extreme Automatic CNC Line nesting machines, giving an ‘all-in-one’ solution to a company manufacturing outdoor kitchens and nesting Tricoya sheets. From that point, J&C O’Meara regularly supplied the SAF dust units when supplying a new CNC, which naturally lead to the company bringing in further dust units for its stock. “To be honest, at first the idea of importing dust units didn’t really excite us that much, as we weren’t aware there would be much demand for another dust unit on the market,” comments Carl O’Meara, MD of J&C O’Meara. “However, it quickly became apparent these units fitted a niche area of the market for companies looking for a high-powered unit but in a compact form.” One of the most popular series of

the SAF Teknik dust extractors are the STK series, which are enclosed units with multi-filter construction and auto shake to clean the filters. These units also have collector bins which are quick release and offer a more clean and efficient means of collecting and removing waste when compared with the traditional-style bag units. The STK units also have a part separator which, in the case of CNC, prevents small offcuts from being sucked into the fan area and

potentially causing damage. “Customers have been very positive about these new dust units, commenting on how powerful and yet how quiet they are in use,” says Carl. “From importing just a few units to see how they go, we now bring in trailerloads of different models, including the STK 3500, 5000, 6500 and 10000m3/h. We also hold in stock the single- and twin-bag, multi-filter mobile dust units, which are often connected to sliding table saws. These also

have the multi-filter construction, allowing a greater airflow and giving more efficiency for the dust extraction.” As well as supplying the standard-style dust units, as part of a complete manufacturing cell for a company looking to produce around 1000 kitchens per year, J&C O’Meara supplied a 16,000 m3/h dust unit to extract several machines. It was mounted directly above a briquetting machine, so there was no handling of the waste. The briquettes were then used as fuel for the wood-burning space heaters within the factory. Recently there has been a stronger partnership between J&C O’Meara’s CNC partners, AES and SAF Teknik, to reflect this, the latest designation for the dust units being AES (manufactured by SAF Teknik). There are full details on J&C O’Meara’s website for the different models available, along with a brochure download giving detailed specifications and floorplans for each model. 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery. co.uk

Three ways to save time on site Natasha Hickling, brand & communications manager, Häfele UK, shares advice on how joiners can work smarter to save time and improve their efficiencies. Whether driven by the surge in home improvements, a workforce shortage or simply a desire to improve their profitability, most joiners are looking for ways to save time and work more efficiently on site. Fortunately, the need for speed, while keeping up quality, is something we understand well. We’ve developed a wide range of products and services to help tradespeople work with ease and speed, and at the same time, maintain their solid reputation. Fewer tools. More speed At Häfele, we have focused on making furniture construction as tool-free as possible. An example of this is Ixconnect CC 8/5/30, a claw connector for wooden drawers that can be used without dowels. Because it has an innovative claw, it compacts the chips in the front panels of wooden drawers for quick fixing of panels and sides over 12mm. When combined with a rear panel connector (Ixconnect RPC D 5/24) that clamps the rear panel with the side walls, Ixconnect CC 8/5/30 reduces the number of drill holes needed, dramatically cutting down assembly time and giving complete precision. It’s also entirely concealed once in place. While a simple piece of hardware, products like Ixconnect make a big difference. In fact, it halves the number of holes required and can reduce assembly time by up to -70%.

Speed vs efficiency Innovative, time-saving products are just one way that manufacturers like us can help joiners and furniture manufacturers maximise their workload. In recent years, we’ve extended Häfele to Order, a bespoke service which allows users to specify products to exact size, quantity and finish. While customers regularly use this service for items such as wardrobe rails or sliding door gear, joiners can now use Häfele to Order for bespoke timber drawers too. Crafting beautiful, handmade bespoke timber drawers takes skill, care, attention, and time, but sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day. Through the service, customers can order handmade, solid timber drawers personalised to their needs and complete with full dovetail joints, in up to a two-week turnaround. The Häfele bespoke timber drawer service is completely made to order, meaning customers can tailor their requirements against a long list of design and personalisation options. Let there be light A similar approach can also be taken to lighting. Loox by Häfele has been developed specifically for the furniture industry. A simple, modular, plugand-play system, it can be easily incorporated into designs to create that all-important wow factor. Grab a Peanut fix from Intelligent Fixings After a challenging two years, and with the W Exhibition/Elements 2022 show at last going ahead in February, the Intelligent Fixings team is excited at the prospect of once again showcasing its innovative range of furniture connectors. This clever connecting system comprises of the original one-machining process Peanut 1 – a self-clamping single component connector designed for CNC nesting machines and requiring only one machining process. The Peanut 2, a self-clamping, invisible connector, plus its shorter version, the Peanut 2 Short, are both made for end-drilling machines as well as for use with the Peanut jigs. The P2 is perfect for 90° joints in 15.3mm+ panels. The P2 Short enables 45° joints to be made in 18mm+ material, along with easy faceto-face connections in 15.3mm+ panels. The Peanut 3 completes the IF’s family of connectors. This connector is the company’s solution for boring and insertion machines for the high-speed production lines of medium-tolarge manufacturers. Excitingly, the collaboration between Intelligent Fixings and two large, well-known machine companies will bring to the market a bespoke insertion machine in the very near future. The demand for Intelligent Fixings’ new Peanut Jig and Peanut Mini Jig for hand-held routers has been phenomenal. These enable small workshops, carpenters on-site and all other woodworkers to use and enjoy the benefits of the Peanut system.

The two high-quality Peanut jigs make producing 45° and 90° joints quick and simple. Recent updates, driven by customer feedback, have brought new features to both jigs. Most exciting of these is the ability to use two other invisible connecting solutions – loose tenons and dowels – which makes both jigs versatile tools for any woodworker. The bespoke Peanut Cutter is needed for use with the Peanut connector, in every form of machining. The cutter is now available in 8mm, 12mm and half-inch shank sizes. These robust cutters are made from solid carbide. The Peanut Connecting System has continued to increase in popularity, helped enormously by Intelligent Fixings’ Instagram posts and the numerous instructional videos available on the Intelligent Fixings YouTube channel. An increase in Intelligent Fixings’ popularity

is also due to the invaluable support and enthusiasm of woodworking YouTuber, Peter Millard, from the 10 Minute Workshop channel. Intelligent Fixings’ market growth continues to increase, not just in the UK but globally. The company’s engagement with keen distributors around the world means that the Peanut is now available in most countries. The full list of IF’s global distributors can be found on the Intelligent Fixings website. Visit stand G650 in the Elements hall at the NEC Birmingham’s W Exhibition 2022 to see the full range of products in the Peanut Connecting System. The enthusiastic and skilled Intelligent Fixings team will be ready and keen to feed every visitor’s hunger for a Peanut fix! www.intelligentfixings.com

REHAU reveals new range of monotonic matte surfaces In response to increased demand for incorporating monotone finishes in the home, REHAU has introduced an elegant new range of surfaces available in 12 timeless matte finishes. The Rauvisio Noir range is crafted with high-quality materials to provide a modern, yet effortless look. From the nature-inspired Boxcar Blonde and classic Maltese Mist, through to the urban Silver Lake and Midnight Dash, the range offers a hue to suit any design – subtle or dramatic. The array of colours to choose from can be used to add a “flawless” finish to any kitchen, says Rehau.

The intense colour depth surfaces are scratch and fingerprint resistant, to maintain an untouched finish, even in the busiest of rooms. All components are also edgebanded with zero-joint technology, providing a seamless, heat- and moisture-resistant joint that prevents the build-up of germs to maintain a clean and hygienic surface. The chemical- and stain-resistant finish makes the Rauvisio Noir range as suitable for food preparation in the kitchen as it is for open-plan dining spaces and cupboard doors. With a choice of either monotonic laminate

matte surfaces available in 3050 x 1300 x 0.9mm, or pressed panels of super-refined MDF surrounded by laminate, available in 3050 x 1300 x 19 and 6mm, there are different options from which to choose to make the space bespoke. Edgebanding, floating shelves and custom cabinet doors are also included in the Rauvisio Noir range, to suit a wide range of projects. Jonathan Heginbottom, national sales manager OEM for Rehau Furniture Solutions division, comments: “There is a real split between those who want kitchens with more striking colours and those who are after more subtle and calming designs. The Rauvisio Noir range caters to both of these tastes with a selection of sleek, matte finishes. Whether people are looking to add depth to the kitchen with dark counter tops or create a more open feel with lighter neutrals, the selection of monotonic hues offers a solution for all. “As more people are spending more time inside during the pandemic, the kitchen truly has become the heart of the home, with families congregating here and using the space for different purposes. This has led to open-plan spaces becoming more popular, as kitchens have become more of a focal point, so customers want to use this to showcase craftmanship. Many are opting for a mix of matte and gloss finishes to produce a multi-dimensional, tactile experience which adds exciting contrast. As tastes continue to change, we are always developing new product lines to match.” www.rehau.com/uk-en/rauvisio-noir-surface

Titus’ furniture hardware solutions have been improving homes around the world for decades. They increase the quality and facilitate RTA furniture, giving significant competitive advantage to manufacturers and improving the consumer experience. Titus’ most popular components are the Quickfit TL5 ‘Full Metal Jacket’ dowel, which provides optimal strength and reduces home assembly time by -50%, and the T-type concealed hinge, which has a tool-free 3Way snap-on mounting. The T-type hinges, with integrated soft closing, are suitable for use on a wide range of doors with thicknesses up to 34mm. Their unique 3way snap-on mounting system makes them exceptionally easy to install, even on large, heavy doors with multiple hinges. The range has recently been extended to include pie-cut (bi-fold) hinges for corner cabinets, which fit standard drilling patterns and feature convenient ‘double-lock’ opening. This means users can either open just one door leaf to get excellent access into the cabinet interior, or they can fully open the doors by locking the hinge cup, making the door leaves work as one. The innovative Quickfit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials. In addition, the new dowels offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to -50% for home-assembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically

using TITUS FastFit machines. To complement its hardware range, Titus offers new TeraBlack (Titus Enhanced Resistance Application) versions with a darkgrey non-reflective finish that is not only visually appealing but also highly resistant to corrosion. TeraBlack products fully meet the requirements of designers and consumers looking for unobtrusive yet attractive cabinet hardware. The product range includes new versions of the T-type hinges, TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels, shelf supports and push latches. The best of tradition and technology

Hettich’s renowned Sensys hinges can enhance traditional cabinet design with the most advanced furniture technology. The best furniture often features in-frame doors, and it is easy to see why. For kitchens, bathrooms and all living spaces, in-frame is the enduring hallmark of quality cabinetry. When combined with top-performing hinges, in-frame can offer the best of tradition and technology – a fact not lost on Hettich, which has developed a solution to allow users of in-frame furniture to enjoy the benefits of its award-winning Sensys hinges.

Colin Patterson, marketing manager, Hettich UK

All you need for in-frame Hettich’s door set for in-frame furniture comprises two 26.5mm hinge spacer plates and the necessary fixing screws, designed to be used in conjunction with a two-part hinge plate and half overlay hinges. A similar solution exists to allow in-frame drawers to benefit from Hettich’s market-leading drawer runner systems, including Quadro and Actro 5D, with their high load capacities, durability and precise, smooth action. But, keeping the focus on Sensys, these simple and effective spacer accessories are part of Hettich’s comprehensive line-up of adapters to allow its hinges to be used with a whole range of door styles – from extra thick/thin doors to glass – and to address specific challenges such as doors at 45° to the frame. It is an approach that ensures technology enhances rather than restricts design flexibility and creativity. Discreet and silent The benefits and convenience of Sensys significantly enhance in-frame furniture while remaining discreet. With integrated Silent System, doors have a wide automatic closing angle of 35°, and outstanding performance means fewer

hinges are needed on larger doors. Elegant cover caps and finish options, including Obsidian Black, ensure that there is no compromise on aesthetics. Easy fitting and adjustment mean the doors will sit perfectly square within the frame. “In-frame is a classic design format which has stood the test of time,” says Colin Patterson, Hettich’s UK marketing manager. “By bringing it up to date with the best in fittings technology, it can now offer a whole new level of function and user satisfaction. Sensys has been successfully installed on thousands of in-frame kitchens, and offers performance and style which stand the test of time.” 0161 872 9552 info@uk.hettich.com www.hettich.com/uk

Kinvaro T-Slim – a new dimension of invisibility Overhead wall cabinets are still one of the most popular storage solutions in the kitchen. With Kinvaro, the Grass portfolio offers a range of different flap-lift mechanisms. This has been extended with the addition of Kinvaro T-Slim. The motto is ‘Super. Slim. T-Slim.’ Kinvaro T-Slim is the thinnest, most efficient fitting ever developed by Grass. It combines purist looks with outstanding durability and the art of perfect movement in a unique way, and in 2020 was honoured with both the Red Dot Design Award and the German Design Award. Reduction is what it is all about. “If less is more, then maybe nothing is everything.” This quote by pioneering architect Rem Koolhaas inspired the development of Kinvaro T-Slim. The new flap-lift mechanism makes the dream of invisible fittings come true – and will therefore provide furniture designers all over the world with inspiration. “We have been a furniture industry pioneer for over 70 years,” says Grass flap-lift mechanism product manager, Harald Küper. “With Kinvaro T-Slim, we are adding a new chapter to our innovation history. After the first-ever concealed hinge or the invention of the double wall drawer, we have now developed a new dimension of invisibility with Kinvaro T-Slim.”

Kinvaro T-Slim blends into the furniture almost invisibly, thereby unlocking completely new possibilities for overhead wall cabinets in response to the current trend. Particularly wide, rather than tall, storage Grass solutions with liftup flaps are currently undergoing a renaissance. Whether fitted at eye level directly above the kitchen worktop, sink or cooker, above a desk or the television in the living room, or next to the mirror in the bathroom – overhead wall cabinets with flaps are an essential design feature in modern interiors. A movement mechanism that does not distract from the design The challenge here is obvious, as every technical detail is visible on a piece of furniture fitted at eye level. This fact prompted the development of Kinvaro T-Slim. Grass’ engineers have managed to reduce the complex mechanism of a lift-up fitting down to an overall size of 12mm. This minimal size provides furniture designers with maximum flexibility. Anything is possible, from a minimum side wall thickness of 16mm upwards. In material terms, there are hardly any limitations – wood can just as easily be used as MDF, and Kinvaro T-Slim’s effect on the furniture’s aesthetics really comes into its own on glass front flaps with aluminium frames. The fitting becomes one with the furniture. “The best movement mechanisms distinguish themselves by the fact that they give precedence to the design of the furniture they have been fitted to,” says Grass flap-lift mechanism product manager, Harald Klüh. “Kinvaro T-Slim perfectly exemplifies this philosophy.” Besides the obvious aesthetic bonus, this reduction in size offers another advantage – the flap lift-up mechanism takes up very little room, so the available storage space can therefore be used to its full potential. The Kinvaro T-Slim flap lift-up mechanism joints are mechanical masterpieces made of nickelplated steel. Moving Kinvaro T-Slim’s five-part

jointed hinge arms reveals a fascinating display of well-co-ordinated technical sensuality – nothing seems to be left to chance. The precise interaction of the matte shiny leverage elements follows a cleverly choreographed sequence of forces – apparently designed to defy the laws of physics. This effortlessness is also transferred to the user – the cabinet front is so easy to move that it appears to be lifted up by an invisible force. The soft-close technology, already proven millions of times over, ensures an elegant, gently dampened closing movement, a comfort feature that is particularly important on overhead wall cabinets. With an opening angle of 107°, the flap opens well beyond the user’s area of movement – conveniently, it can therefore stay open without getting in the way. It comes with an integrated opening angle limiting stay, that prevents the front from being lifted up too high on overhead wall cabinets that are mounted directly below the ceiling. It can also be equipped with Tipmatic, for handleless cabinet versions. A wider range of fitting possibilities When it comes to the fitting options, the latest Grass product offers several possibilities. Kinvaro T-Slim can either be inset or overlaid and screwed on, the most commonly used alternative in the industry. The design of this fitting version is also impressively slim and space-saving. No tools are needed to fit and remove the two-part covering pelmet. The flap-lift system can therefore also be adjusted after it has been fitted, if necessary. It is attached to the front with a clip, a solution that is as elegant as it is simple. The fully adjustable spring tension can be adjusted from the front – to ensure that the fronts move easily and elegantly. Kinvaro T-Slim is also available in a choice of design versions – Grass offers the mechanism in its standard colours, Ice, Stone and Silver. A paintable covering pelmet is also available – it can simply be painted to match the body finish. www.grass.eu

Furnica adds sliding door systems to UK market range Furnica announced at the beginning of the year that, in response to a number of enquiries from its customers, it was going to introduce high-quality sliding door systems for carpentry companies and private clients to the UK market. The most important challenge in introducing sliding door systems into the UK market was to ensure stocks of aluminium and steel profiles, as well as all the accessories required to manufacture the completed doors. Furnica now intends to dedicate part of its warehouse in Rugby to maintain stock levels so that the first customers can be served this month. “At the moment we are doing our best to respond to the demand from our clients, both carpenter companies who manufacture wardrobes and cupboards with sliding doors, and individual customers using the application for ordering sliding doors on line,” comments Kamil Siedzielnik, Furnica’s CEO.

In the second half of November, Furnica plans to deliver the necessary profiles and accessories for the manufacture of sliding doors to the UK warehouse, and the stock levels maintained will enable Furnica to deliver accessories within four working days for its customers in the UK. “Later this year, we also plan to introduce a special application for designing and ordering sliding doors online,” adds Kamil. “In the application, the customer enters the dimensions of the door and chooses the profile colour and type of filling. Within four weeks, one of the companies co-operating with Furnica will deliver the manufactured sliding door to the indicated address. “Furnica is currently looking for companies in the UK who would like to start working with us to manufacture sliding doors for individual customers who wish to order them online. “We are looking for carpenters who already manufacture sliding doors, who would like to work as an Furnica Authorised Dealer. From our side we will provide training and the necessary tools.”

Furnica intends to focus primarily on the supply of aluminium and steel profiles and accessories to the UK, and will outsource the entire sliding door production and delivery process. “We do not intend to manufacture readymade sliding doors,” explains Kamil. “All orders received online, via our website, will be forwarded to dealers who will use our systems to manufacture and deliver the finished doors to our customers. “For companies willing to co-operate, Furnica has prepared very attractive price conditions. As a manufacturer and distributor of furniture accessories, Furnica does not plan to make money on serving retail customers, and therefore intends to transfer its services to a network of co-operating companies.” To further support its partners, Furnica will soon be introducing Lacobel in several colours, EGGER 10mm board and a wide range of mirrors in various colours. www.furnica.co.uk

Salvador SuperPush 200 optimising defecting crosscut saw

As the end of 2021 fast approaches, Daltons Wadkin celebrates being named as the top-performing agent worldwide for sales of Salvador crosscut saws. “We have been working with Salvador for almost 15 years,” announces Alex Dalton, MD at Daltons Wadkin. “The partnership has gone from strength to strength, and we are now Salvador’s premier agent, both in terms of turnover and units sold. The early years involved a lot of hard work, but we have firmly established ourselves as the go-to name for automatic crosscutting solutions.” As sole agent for the Italian manufacturer in the UK and Ireland, Daltons Wadkin has seen exponential sales growth in Salvador products over the past three years, with 2021 breaking records once again. Alex attributes the continued success to two key factors.

“Firstly, Salvador products are just awesome – not my words, but the feedback from our customers,” he says. “As a dedicated manufacturer of automatic crosscut saws, they have spent over 35 years developing a range of robust, reliable cutting solutions that are now the industry standard for many sectors.” The second key element in why customers are choosing Daltons Wadkin is support and backup. The service team now includes 20 regionally based mechanical, electrical and CNC engineers, providing on-site support as well as remote telephone and NET assistance. “When customers invest in high-production machinery such as Salvador crosscuts, support

is absolutely paramount,” continues Alex. “It is not enough that the product is fantastic. If a machine goes down, we must react instantly. “We have invested heavily in our engineering team and spare parts stock to deliver unrivalled customer care across the UK and Ireland. This, I believe, sets us heads and shoulders above the competition. Daltons Wadkin + Salvador = customer success.” Daltons Wadkin offers over a dozen different models of crosscut saw to suit almost any application, from traditional radial-arm saws to fully automatic chain-loading crosscuts for high-volume production. Salvador continues to push the boundaries of programmable crosscutting technology with a comprehensive range of labour- saving, cost-cutting solutions that are becoming the industry standard for manufacturers of garden furniture, studios, sheds, timber-framed buildings, fencing, joinery products, pallets and cases. Customers can expect a professional experience working with Daltons Wadkin. Beginning with the sales process, detailed discussions and working demonstrations help define production requirements. The engineering team then puts in place a turnkey installation package to cover delivery, commissioning and operator training to help ensure maximum return on investment. Ongoing telephone and remote NET support is provided for the lifetime of the machine, with optional planned preventative maintenance contracts also available. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Edgebanding with Henkel Technomelt PUR adhesives Henkel offers an exceptional range of PUR adhesives supplied in Granules, 2kg blocks, 20kg drums and 200kg drums for all known edgebanding machines and applications, and they are also available in ME (Micro Emissions). “The tried-and-tested, market-leading Technomelt 270-7 has a proven winning background and is probably the most versatile grade on the market, offering exceptional high performance,” says Ian Kenyon, Kenyon Group MD. “However, it’s not just the adhesive that makes Henkel PUR adhesives the market leader, it’s the technical and on-site support offered by both Henkel and Kenyon’s that separates us from the rest of the field. We don’t just sell adhesives, we live them, and this includes supporting you!” The Henkel Technomelt PUR 270 adhesive range provides exceptional performance benefits, including high heat resistance and cold temperature flexibility, high water resistance, high initial strength, and a very high final bond strength. However, with a variety of applications within the market, several different grades have been formulated to meet the different operational demands.

Technomelt PUR 270/5 This is designed for machines that operate at very high feedrates, up to 80m/minute. As a result, and to ensure demand is met, it is only available in a 20kg drum. This grade is also available in a Micro Emissions (ME) version. Technomelt PUR 270/6 Particularly suited for BAZ/contour edgebanders, where thick edging material might be used on curved edging applications, this is available in 2kg blocks and 20kg drums. Technomelt PUR 270/7 Henkel’s flagship and most popular polyurethane hot-melt adhesive (PURHMA) for edgebanding provides a high standard in both quality and performance. The lowest viscosity of all of Henkel’s PUR adhesives, it allows for tight joints and zero glue lines on all common edging

materials. It is available in 2kg blocks, 20kg drums and granules, and is a popular option as it reduces the outlay for specialist application equipment. Technomelt PUR 270/9 ME Henkel’s original Micro Emission (ME) offering provides all the performance benefits one experiences with Technomelt PUR 270/7, but contains less than 0.1% isocyanate monomer, reducing vapours by up to -90%. This is ideal for companies looking to reduce stockholdings that contain hazardous labelling. Available in 2kg blocks and 20kg drums . Contact the below for more information on the Henkel Technomelt PUR adhesives and cleaners available through Kenyon Group, or impartial advice on any adhesive problem. 0161 627 1001 www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Perfect ergonomics, right around the corner Electrically height-adjustable desks are now almost standard – for both private and commercial furnishings. As a rule, these are typically rectangular desks – but, with the new REDOCOL e-Desk Pro 90° table frame, corner solutions and even conference tables can be designed to be height adjustable. Anyone who thinks height-adjustable desks have to be rectangular does not know about Ostermann’s REDOCOL e-Desk Pro 90° table frame. Three lifting columns, available in traffic white, anthracite grey, jet black and white aluminium, build even large corner solutions or entire conference tables to be built. Carpenters and cabinetmakers can find all relevant product information using the search item #edesk on the Ostermann website (www.ostermann.eu). REDOCOL e-Desk Pro 90° REDOCOL e-Desk Pro 90° is suitable for tabletops with widths of 575-800mm and lengths of 1100-2000mm. It has a load capacity of up to 120kg and can be adjusted with the three-stage risers to heights of 600-1250mm. The delivery includes the classic table frame, an extra single column, two adjustable crosspieces and materials for the electronic controls.

For retrofitting – the single column To retrofit or convert existing table constructions with REDOCOL e-Desk Pro, the additional single column required for corner solutions can be purchased separately. The simple variant – REDOCOL e-Desk Eco For carpenters or joiners who only need the simple variant, the e-Desk also comes in an eco design. This is also available in four attractive colours. The two columns have a simple, two-stage riser that can be set to heights of 7001180mm. The frame can carry up to 100kg. Do not forget the cables To prevent the cables for electricity, network, desk lamp, etc from dangling down behind the table, Ostermann supplies a variety of accessories for cable organisation. The experts recommend a cable duct with a table connection for height-adjustable desks. www.ostermann.eu

AAG introduces new M-Series of waterjet cutting machines

A leading supplier of CNC machining solutions to a wide range of industries, AAG has now added the M-Series of large-format waterjet cutting machines to its WARDJet portfolio. It includes a number of new design features that enable easier access to the material being processed, faster cutting speeds and maximum utilisation of the processing bed area to further reduce material wastage. The M-Series is available in a choice of four different-sized models – 2540, 5040, 7540 and 10040 – with respective cutting envelopes of 2.5 x 4, 5 x 4, 7.5 x 4 and 10 x 4m. Purpose-built for the cutting of industrystandard material sheet sizes, the M-Series incorporates WARDJet’s proprietary MOVE intuitive software, which encompasses multiple machining functions. It also features a triple-head cutting configuration that enables radically increased productivity levels and easier switching from single- to triple-head cutting,

contingent upon the size and volume of the material being processed. A new gantry design makes it easier to load and offload material while the machine is running, with the integrated helical rack-andpinion drive system featuring a multi-teeth configuration, enabling cutting speeds of up to 35m/min. This system also ensures more even distribution of the workload, quieter machine operation and ultimately a longer-than-normal machine life. The latest Apex-60 5-axis cutting head further extends the performance of the M-Series, and in particular its ability to handle threedimensional work. Key benefits of the Apex-60 include the ability to cut any angle from 0-60°, thereby opening up many new possibilities and applications. The Apex-60 also greatly increases the speed and efficiency with which ancillary finishing can be carried out. This would otherwise require

additional machine shop staff and add to operating costs. With a Z-travel capability of 304.8mm, the Apex-60 will also accommodate the processing of the thickest materials likely to be encountered, and with no compromise on quality. In common with all waterjet cutting machines supplied by AAG, the M-Series will handle a wide range of materials that traditional CNC routing/ cutting systems cannot effectively handle. Typically, these include stainless steel and other non-ferrous metals, alloys such as brass, bronze and zinc, stone, marble, ceramics, glass, fibreglass, high-density plastics and laminates and solid and composite rubber. The M-Series is fully upgradeable to meet customers’ future production requirements, and is supported with free product training and ongoing online technical support. 01952 291600 www.wardjet.com

Makita continues to provide the power As part of its new October product releases, leading power tool manufacturer Makita UK revealed a number of new 40VMax cordless machines that have been added to its XGT range. The new, high-powered products provide a one-battery solution to handle the most demanding jobs and environments, without sacrificing run time. 40VMax LS004G XGT Mitre Saw Driven by a 40VMax brushless motor, this XGT 260mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw provides a no-load speed of up to 3600rpm for high-power cutting that is comparable to corded machines. The rail-forward design allows users to maximise workspace, as the machine can be positioned next to a wall and its single sliding system enables smooth operation to produce superior cuts. Its 48° bevel range and 60° mitre range are easily adjusted with quick lock and release, making it simple to achieve the cut required. This impressive tool is also packed with safety features including Auto-Start Wireless System technology (AWS), enabling the machine to connect to compatible dust extractors via Bluetooth. When applied, the dust extractor is powered on and off while the saw is in use. An LED light improves task visibility, and, for greater safety, an electric brake stops the blade in seconds.

“Our XGT platform was designed to provide professionals with even more power to meet high demand applications with ease,” comments Kevin Brannigan, marketing manager at Makita UK. “All of our XGT solutions are engineered with built-in programming, which provides digital communication between the battery and the

tool, so that both work together for optimum performance and sustained power. “We are pleased to expand the XGT range with our latest 40VMax and 80VMax equipment and tools, so that professionals can fully experience a truly cordless job site.” www.makitauk.com
