01 Tranquili - Tree
The Tranquili-Tree is a project from my 1B Studio Course. The goal of the project was to design and model a pavilion to be placed in Waterloo Park, that would accommodate for the current lack of shading. For this project I worked with Stephanie Leaper, Micah Jonker and Sunny Sun. Our inspiration behind the Tranquili-Tree was to create a pavilion that would blend in naturally with the features of the park around it. However rather than replicating the appearance of a tree we decided on pursuing the experience of sitting under a tree. We wanted to emulate the feeling of relaxing under scattered shade while also relieving people from having to sit on dirt and uneven ground. Furthermore, we desired to bring people within the widespread park together, and create a small and protected community of interaction, especially during these times of isolation
The Tranquili-Tree has a modular design consisting of three identical structures. The structures are each made of three large glulam columns that form a triangular shape at the base and connect to the roof above. The roof is a beam system consisting of 9 large hexagons subdivided into equilateral triangles with 12 additional triangles to connect the hexagons together. The covering of the roof structure utilizes glass with printed designs to create the dappled lighting effect that we desired. This project was created using Rhino and my main responsibilities were the pavilion elevations, foundation detail, bench connection details and roof plan.
