Silsbee volleyball gets defensive in rebuilding year By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com

Sometimes high school sports will take a hard hit from graduation that can prove to be a rebuilding year for the next season. Such is the case for Silsbee Head Volleyball Coach Lindsay Leach and her Lady Tigers team for the 2012 season. Silsbee is looking to regain its district championship form from last

season after the loss of eight seniors to graduation. “We have a good group this season that are willing to work hard,” said Leach. “They are self-motivated and seem to mesh well with one another. But we are lacking in experience with no proven leaders.” The Lady Tigers lost five of their eight seniors that saw ample floor time in its 2011 District 21-3A championship year before falling in the area round of

the playoffs. This season, 10 return to varsity with little or no experience in starting roles including four that did see some play time in the 2011 season. One player that Leach is relying on heavily to be a catalyst of the team will be senior middle blocker Erin Watson. She is listed at 6-4 and poses a threat in the middle for any given team. “She has all the right tools to be a great player,” said Leach. “Obviously, it will be intimidating for other teams to see her walk out on the floor. She is the type of player that can be a leader by example and we are hoping to get that from her.” Senior Ashley Waters will also be an integral part of the team this season. The 5-11 senior has enough talent all over the court and is listed as a utility player but is talented as a setter. Other seniors expected to see plenty of action will be Halun Harris, a 5-7 out-

Tiger Band get ready for a successful year By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

High School Band are gearing up for a fun and excitement filled school year. Patterson is returning for his ninth year as band director and prepared to lead the group through an amazing year. The theme this year is “Shades of Latin”, and the band will carry this theme to the UIL marching contest in October, that will take place at Port Neches Groves stadium. The “Shades of Latin” theme will boast upbeat numbers

as well as music with a classic Latin feel. The band is welcoming 22 new freshmen for a total of 68 band members. Drum majors Hannah Hayes and Autumn White will lead the band. The Silsbee Tiger Flag Corps will also be on hand to support and march with the band. Patterson stated that the band grew slightly this year and hopes that this will be a continuing trend over the years to come.

Patterson, who is more affectionately known on campus as “The Music Man”, is looking forward to helping the band grow and develop. Band members attended summer training in preparation for the upcoming season and while the heat was as always an issue, students fared well and the excitement of a new season outweighed the negatives of the heat. Students, teachers and parents alike, along with See BAND on PG. 6, SEC. 3

The Silsbee Tigerettes Drill Team is ready to start the 2012-13 football season with a bang. Director Jenny Chandler, who with her mother, Cynthia, have directed the team for the past four years. But this year, Jenny will be going at it without her partner in crime as her mother has retired to enjoy being a grandmother. This does not deter Chandler at all and she is full of excitement for the upcoming season. The 2012-13 Tigerettes are made up of 19 girls,

and of those, 10 are freshmen. "We have a young group and they are full of energy," Chandler commented. Officers for the 2012-13 school year are senior, Captain Lauren Kuebodeaux, First Lieutenant Whitney Hayes, a junior, Second Lieutenant Tiffany Marcental, a junior and Sergeant Alexis Porzadek, also a junior. Helping the officers are managers Shelby Hogan, Beth Young, Emilea Swearingen and Lain Eason. Managers provide a support system for the team and help keep things organized by keeping up

the costume closet, managing music and helping the girls stay organized. The Tigerettes attended the HTE Dance Camp in Richardson this past June for four days and took home three of the four awards given. The HTE Dance Camp is designed differently from other camps. It is a spirit and character building camp. Where some camps concentrate solely on competitive performances, HTE focuses on building character and well rounded ladies. "Instead of who dances the best, they look for the kind hearts," Chandler stated. The girls also had the honor of learning a hip hop routine from renowned dance instructor Ade Obayomi, who came to fame as a finalist on the popular dance show, “So You Think You Can Dance.” The girls learned 12 dances over the four day stay at camp and also

learned a new field routine that will employ wooden boxes as props. Two Tigerettes earned the honor of being inducted into "The Academy", an elite group of ladies who will have the chance to perform in Hawaii over Spring Break. Lauren Kuebodeaux and Tiffany Marcental earned a place in Kick Academy and Marcental also earned a spot in Dance Academy. The team will be selling Silsbee Tigers Football Signature Shirts on the first day of school through the first three weeks as a fundraiser and will also hold a fall dance clinic. The dance clinic is for kindergarten through eighth grade and will take place on Saturday, September 15. Chandler and the Tigerettes are looking forward to the upcoming season and promise that it will be an energy filled, fun season.

Additional team adds spice to tough District 21-3A By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com

The West Orange-Stark Mustangs continue to be the team to beat in District 21-3A and rightfully so when their defense stars on any given evening. But the Silsbee Tigers

bask in the shadows of the Mustangs and look to upend the 2011 district champions this season with its high-powered offense. The championship could come down to the one game when these two teams meet in what will be one good defense against one good offense. But thanks to the biennial realignment, all the teams in 21-3A will have to go through one more team added – Buna moves up from class 2A into the district. West Orange-Stark is coming off of a 10-4 DII regional finals appearance after going 5-0 in district play. The Mustangs return five offensive and seven defensive starters on an already loaded team. The core of the team returns for the Mustangs including highly regarded defensive linemen DE Trayvon Blanchard (6-3, 180) and DT Jerquis Beasley (6-0, 260). Also returning defensively are LB Daniel Woodson (6-0, 210), DB Ar’Tevin McDonald, CB Joe Lynch, DB Abear Simien and DB Quenton Tezeno. Offensively, the Mustangs return QB Jimmy Salter, TE Jamarcus Rhodes (6-3, 175), WR

Dre’ Spencer (6-0, 160) and WR Rashon McDonald. The Mustangs continue to improve each season under Head Coach Cornel Thompson. The Silsbee Tigers will give it their all against WO-S in hopes of dethroning the power this season. The Tigers have all the tools to do just that and the season could get interesting barring any major injuries to a Silsbee team that lacks depth. Silbee finished the 2011 season with an 8-3 record and reached the DI bidistrict round of the playoffs where they were knocked off by Huffman-Hargrave. The team returns six on offense and five on defense in a group that could be a solid contender for the top spot. The top two skill players return from last season including QB Patrick Reed and RB Floyd Spearman. OL Kanon Mackey will provide blocking. Defensively, the Tigers look to DL Seth Adams, LB Dusty Thibodeaux and LB Adam Valencia to carry the load. What’s better for Silsbee Head Coach Bobby McGallion is that if Silsbee does make the playoffs, they will enter DI and won’t have to face La Mar-

The Cardinals return two on offense and three on defense but still look to be a contender for the playoffs after finishing 8-3 last season and reached the bidistrict playoffs in DII. Returning on defense is LB Zach Cole (5-10, 222) and CB Tanner Cervenka. On offense, it will be RB Ashton Hunter (6-0, 185) and OL Josh Blanchard. No pushover of the district will be Orangefield, who could be a spoiler. The Bobcats return five on offense and four on defense from a team that finished 5-5 overall and 2-3 in district play. Orangefield is now under Josh Smalley, who was offensive coordinator at Bridge City prior to his new head coaching position. The Bobcats will ride the back of RB Carl Wiley (60, 170) who will get open by the blocking of TE Mason Sonnier (6-4, 215). Defense will be DB Eric Truncale (5-9, 170), LB Levi Shores, DL Ian Putman and LB Dustin Selman. The newest team to the district will be Buna moving up from the 2A ranks. The Cougars finished the 2011 season with a 7-3 record including a 4-3 finish in district, class 2A-DI. Buna returns six on offense and five on defense. Defense will be the name of the game for the Cougars led by DL Bryce Tippet (6-3, 235), DE Chris Champion (6-0, 215), S Glenn Patrick and LB Dalton Ford. Offensively, Buna will be led by QB Kolton Clark, TE Tate Lejuene and RB Sage Smith (6-1, 195).

Tigers taking one game at a time By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com The attitude may be work and one-game at a time for the Silsbee Tigers. But deep down, it goes beyond that in how this team is approaching the game in 2012. Silsbee lost three to graduation that may have hit hard, but the mindset to some talented players returning is that there is some unfinished business. Silsbee enters the 2012 season with some high expectations for a team that was eliminated from the bidistrict round of the playoffs in 2011 by HuffmanHargrave. “Our kids have been practicing hard and preparing to win,” said Head Coach Bobby McGallion. “We try not to get ahead of ourselves and will play from whistle to whistle. We do have some personal

goals but right now, we focus on getting comfortable with what we can do as a team.” Silsbee managed to earn a spot in the playoffs last season despite an unorthodox loss to Bridge City 6-0 and then falling to eventual district champions West Orange-Stark 24-13. The Tigers finished 2011 with an 8-3 record and enter a new season with four skill positions back of the six returning on the offensive side of the ball. Though the Tigers bank on a swarming defense, offense will provide plenty of firepower with the return of two juniors QB Patrick Reed (6-2, 180) and RB Floyd Spearman (6-2, 180). Though Reed only played seven games in 2011 as a starting sophomore due to injuries, the quarterback still managed

On the offensive line, the Tigers return senior C Ross Gilchriest (5-8, 190) and junior RT Kanon Mackey (6-4, 250). McGallion is working on finding guards to fill with two battling for position. Two starters will be named when the season begins. Returning on defense will be senior DB Coy Bird (5-7, 160) and CB Holmes in the backfield.

Joining them will be senior CB Montana Garcia (60, 180), who will also see time at wide receiver. FS Jordan Gore (6-0, 170) will also see playing time. Returning leaders on defense will be senior outside linebackers Dusty Thibodeaux (5-9, 180) and Adam Valencia (5-9, 180). Silsbee Head Coach Bobby McGallion (with whistle) is preparing his Silsbee Tigers for another repeat season in the playoffs in a tougher 3A division.

Returning defensive lineman junior Seth Adams (6-0, 280) will be the catalyst of the defensive line. Joining Adams will be senior DT Elijiah Miller (6-0, 180) and junior DT Jemarcus Myers (5-11, 210). The Tigers will undoubtedly lack depth this season and hope that injuries won’t be a problem. “It’s always a problem when it comes to injuries for any team,” said McGallion. “We hope to stay relatively healthy. Floyd is coming off of an injury and still working back to his normal self, but we should be fine by the start of the season.” The real test will be on Week 0 when the Tigers face perenial 4A power Port Neches-Groves at Tiger Stadium on August 31. But McGallion isn’t banking on an easy season when it comes to District 21-3A. The Tigers will have to battle top contenders West Orange-Stark and Bridge City for a playoff berth along with the addition of Buna, a team that moved up from 2A after the UIL biennial realignment. “We take it all one game at a time,” said McGallion. “We have Orangefield and Hamshire-Fannett that can sneak up on you on any

given night. This isn’t an easy district where teams roll over and quit.” Silsbee is counting on stingy defense to get the job done and swarm to the ball. The Tigers non-district schedule won’t be easy and could be the catalyst on how the season will go, barring injuries. Preseason polls pick the Tigers to finish in second place behind WO-S, but Silsbee feels like it is anyones game. “If we can take care of the games through the season, anyone can be district champions,” said McGallion. “We know who will be the tough games and we’ll deal with them when it comes time. For now, we concentrate on getting the season underway and playing each game.” Dusty Thibodeaux

Lamar Cardinals banking on improvement in 2012 After missing 21 years from the college football scene, the Lamar Cardinals have fielded a team for two years and appear to be on the way to fielding a competitive squad. Last year the team was 4-7 and 2-5 in conference play. This year they return 14 starters. They have a new defensive coordinator in Bill Bradley who was a school boy hero at Palestine High School and later gained fame at the University of Texas and in the NFL. He played in 114 NFL games

and holds career records for interception return yardage at Philadelphia with 536 and single season records for interceptions and return yardage. The squad will also have a new offensive coordinator in Larry Kueck. Though none of the players can remember it because it was before they were born, he served as the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator at Lamar from 1986-89. During the time he was at Lamar the school had

the most prolific passing numbers that it has had in history. This year he will have a couple of good young quarterbacks to work with in Ryan Mossakowski and Caleb Berry. The team will operate out of multiple sets but will primarily be a pro style offense. It will have a lot of movement. Defensively the squad has moved to a 3-4 defense, which Coach Woodard says fits the team’s style.

It is designed for guys who can run and move. It is the defense that Wade Phillips designed and Woodard is very familiar with it. The squad has a strong nucleus with 14 returning starters. These were bolstered by a number of late transfers including a group of four who transferred from the Oklahoma State squad that finished 2011 at 12-1 and ranked in the top three in the country. Possibly the area of biggest improvement could be the running back position. Last year the running back position seemed to be in good hands when DePauldrick Garrett transferred in to bolster the position. He gained 105 yards in his first game, two weeks later his season was over when he suffered a shoulder injury. This year he is back and looks bigger. Teammate Mike Vinson has more experience and the group has the added benefit of three newcomers. Herschel Sims is one of the transfers from OSU. Desmond Richards was an all state players at Magnolia High School who rushed for 2437 yards and scored 31 touchdowns. Darrell Harris was an all state selection who rushed for 2592 and scored 24 times for Waco High School. Last week they suffered a blow when Anthony Beard, a starting linebacker from Lumberton injured a knee and is expected to be out for the season. This is the second time he has injured the knee.

James playing for love of the game Joshua James graduated from Silsbee High School in 2009. He played his final game during the area round loss to Navasota that was played at Huntsville. He was a little undersized for a college player but had an ethic of hitting that not only jarred opponents but impressed coaches. When his high school coach Craig McGallion took a job at Lamar, he decided to attend Lamar University. He had experienced a lot of success in high school He was a two time second team all district player and made first team all area as well as first team all district his senior year. He had over 250 tackles and nine interceptions. In addition he participated in power lift-

ing and track. At Lamar, he played in the Cards' last two games of the season during his freshman year. He had a pair of tackles in Lamar's season ending 44-6 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State. One of the tackles was for a loss. Then he red shirted and

began to put on some weight. He is now up to 5-10, 195 pounds. His position has moved. He is now listed as a linebacker and expects to play some on the inside and outside. Though he is small for a linebacker, he is a hard hitter and likes to blitz a lot. Because of his aggressive style of play he has found himself a spot on the kickoff and punt teams. James is a non-scholarship player. He plays because he loves the game and he is working to earn himself a spot. To him college defensive players are bigger and faster guys than they were in high school. The play book is more challenging and he views college foot-

ball as a full time job. He now has set himself a goal to help the team win. James says, "During the last three years no one knew who I was. I want people to know I am here and important to this team." James now has three teammates on the team who also graduated from Silsbee High School. He brought up the subject that the freshman are very strong and they will be real good. He singled out David Hollyfield as a player that fans could expect to see doing good things on the field. James is the son of William James and Latrel Jackson. He has one brother and five sisters. He is majoring in kinesiology.

Gillam improves to solid player

Kyle Gillam is something special at Lamar. Last year he was by far the smallest starter on the Cardinals offensive line. Now after starting 22 straight games he is the anchor and leader of the line. As a redshirt freshman he started all 11 games and played all but three plays for the Cards. Last year the Cards had a few one sided games and he sat out a few series. He played last year with some really big players who transferred in but did not pan out. He consistently graded out the best. He graded out over 90 percent.

Today the 2-year letterman has put on some pounds. After starting college at only 235 pounds he has bulked up to 285. He Kyle Gillam

Area athletes shine at Lamar

Anthony Beard 6-0, 230 pound linebacker. He is a one year letterman who is a red shirt sophomore. He played in all eleven games last year and started six games.He finished second on the defense with 58 total tackles including 32 solos. He had 7.5 takes for losses. complex. He says the team has been spending a lot of time in the film room. Coaches have been spending a lot of time explaining how the offense works. He views the offense as tough and still in the building stage. He also sees the offensive line as younger but potentially a lot better. He quickly goes through the depth chart, starting with Justin Brock, a red shirt freshman at left tackle. Sean Robertson at right guard. He will assure you that he is happier with the situation than a year ago. Last year the team had to deal with a lot of injuries and some outside problems. While they had some big guys, the line was really kind of small. Though Gillam is the big man on the Lamar campus, he has taken the time to watch some of the younger guys at work and had words of praise for Brett Treadway of Silsbee. He noted that Treadway was one of the strongest guys and that he was pleased with the Silsbee guys. He also said, "You can expect to see Hollyfield on the field. He and Treadway are two of the strongest guys." Overall Gillam says,

"This is our third year. We have experience." He went on to say that he feels they will be much better this year. Gillam is looking for a championship kind of year. He is the son of Kevin Gillam and Nancy Borne He is majoring in human resources management.

Silsbee cheerleaders headed toward a winning season By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

The 2012-13 Silsbee Tiger Cheerleaders are geared up for a memorable season. Just as fans fill the stands to watch a Tiger game, they also fill the stands to watch and take part in the excitement of supporting their home team along with the cheerleaders. Cheerleaders have become an integral part of the football season and allow fans the opportunity to take part in the excitement, and the Tiger cheerleaders are no different. Whether it be pumping up the crowd with the fight song or handing out spirit items, the cheerleaders are along the sidelines, passing out support and spirit to drive the players on to victory. Teshauna Turk will lead

the girls for the 2012-13 season. Turk, a teacher, is returning for her tenth year as cheerleading director and says her girls are more excited and dedicated than ever. The varsity squad has twelve members and the junior varsity has seven members, with some who have been named "All American Cheerleader" by the National Cheerleader Assosciation. Natalie Turk and Kailey Colvin will serve as captain and co-captain of the varsity squad. Both are seniors this year and have cheered with the Tigers in previous seasons. Both girls will bring experience and leadership to the team. The varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming season. Both attended camp

over the summer and have been practicing their routines over the past couple of weeks. Turk stated that fans will be both surprised and pleased with the progress the girls have made over the summer. The varsity cheerleaders are planning to host a cheer camp for younger girls. The camp will allow future Tiger cheerleaders the opportunity to learn a routine and perform it with the varsity cheerleaders at a later date. They will also be selling the 2012-13 Silsbee Tiger Signature Shirts during the first three weeks of school to help with fundraising. The shirts will have the signatures of all cheer, drill team and football players, as well as other athletics. It takes dedication and self discipline to be a successful Tiger cheerleader.

2012 Kountze Varsity Lions

New system may be key to success for Lions

Football is underway at Kountze High School and for the second straight year the team will have a new coach, a new system and new group of players contending for positions on the starting team. Tracey Franklin who has coached at several area schools, and had his last head coaching position at Chester, has taken the approach that all of the posi-

tions are wide open. He is watching the players to see who will emerge as starters for the coming year. He hopes to be able to determine who the starters will be after the Lions three way scrimmage on Friday. The competition starts at quarterback where Rowdy Teel, Justin Harper and Graylon Arnold are all battling for a starting position.

Harper and Arnold both threw passes for touchdowns during the Lions scrimmage against West Hardin last week. Jamazdan Powell, Tyler Brown, Marcus Williams, Isiah Owens, Keilan Jones, Ashton Whittle, Jace Warren, Eric Briscoe, Earnest Hafford and Javonta Powell are all seeking a look at running back. yards rushing last year and Powell had moments of brilliance. Powell had one reception for a touchdown during the Lions scrimmage with West Hardin last week. Darrion Harper, who caught passes for over 600 yards last year, gives the wide receiver corpse some solid experience. The 5-10, 145 pound receiver runs a 4.6 second 40. Blake Best, Deontra Morgan, Jaydon Cunigan, Alexander Orsot and Xavier Scott will be joining him in the battle for time at wide receiver. The team has a good group of players in the battle for playing time on the offensive line. The group includes Braden Franklin, James Bottley, Devin Sangwin, Tyler Parker, Michael Jones, Michael Gandy, Taylor Smith, Josh Chevalier, Caleb Darby, Ryan Parish, Jermaine Poncho, Vern Thomas and Brent Booker. The defense was stifling against an outmatched West Hardin squad. Middleton is looking for candidates on the defensive line from a group that includes Braden Franklin, James Bottley, Devin Sangwin, Tyler Parker, Isiah Owens, Michael Jones, Alfred Powell, Michael Gandy, Vern Thomas, Ryan Parishand Josh Chevalier. Kountze band aiming for sweepstakes

The Kountze High School Band has a tradition of excellence and this year they have 53 musicians in grades nine through 12 to attempt to earn another Sweepstakes award. This year the band will be under the direction of drum major Alexus Flowers. In addition to being the Drum Major, the senior also serves as the base line captain of the drum line. The band has two assis-

tant drum majors. Both of these musicians are juniors. The pair includes Joey Schoenfeld and Megan West. West is the captain of the flag corpse, which has five performers. Meagan Tantillo is the band captain. This year the band will be performing a show that they call "Fire and Ice". Band Director Bobby Fife says that the music is characterized by songs such as "Fire and Brim-

stone", "Ukrainian Bell Carol", "Icycles" , and "Firebird". The band began working on the show during the summer and it is anticipated that at approximately half of the music will be in place by the time the first show takes the field. The band is unique because it appears on the field in a variety of uniforms. It includes one volleyball player, a cheerleader, three drill team member, and half a

dozen football players. Fife says that the conflict is no problem. The band director is proud of the variety and quickly assures you that the variety is not a problem. Sometimes the variety of activities that they participate in draws them away from the band, but Fife says, "they are worth the problems." As a group the band has a one of the most positive attitudes of any group that he has taught in years.

The band is actually very young. Of the 53 members there are less than half a dozen seniors. The oldest group in the band is the drum line. Fife, who is in his 15th year as band instructor, will be assisted by Brad Long, who is in his 11th

year. Brent Gibson joins the staff as the new percussion instructor. He came to Kountze from Bridge City. Courtney Courts is the color guard instructor. She works part time at the school.

Newton, East Chambers teams to beat

The Newton Eagles are the team to beat year in and year out in 10-2A Division I. This year promises to be no different, but there is no shortage of challengers for the Eagles. Coach W.T. Johnson has seven offensive and seven defensive lettermen returning off a team that finished district play at 6-1 and went far enough in the playoffs to be an area finalist. The Eagles are led by quarterback D. J. Dean, who passed for nearly 1,300 yards and rushed for 672. He is also one of the teams best defenders and is sure to be a recruit that college coaches will be looking at closely. In addition ,Kevin Shorter carried the ball for 1,250 yards and Brandon Johnson picked up over 1,000. The squad appears ready to compete far into the playoffs this year, however, they did struggle and show some weak spots in their season opening scrimmage against Silsbee. East Chambers would appear to be the primary challenger. They have five offensive and five defensive starters returning off a team that went undefeated in district play and was a regional finalist last year. They are led by all-state running back Glenn Roberts, who rushed for 2,027 yards and had 28 touchdowns. He also had 252 yards receiving. East Chambers has developed into being a traditional power in the district. The school has good numbers and Coach Russ Sutherland has a deep

squad with 16 returning lettermen. This year Kirbyville returns to Class AA. They made it to the state finals during their last two years in AA but then a move to AAA was a turn for the worse. Last year, with new coaching and a shortage of players, the wheels came off. After years of making deep runs in the playoffs, Kirbyville finished the season with a record of 2-9. Because the district they were in was weak, they were able to squeeze into the playoffs after finishing with a 2-2 record in district play. The playoff drive ended soon. Coach Greg Neece should have an opportunity to regroup this year. The squad will be at least competitive and could easily squeeze into the playoffs. They do have size with a line led by Jacob Keene, a 6-5, 275 pound lineman and some skill players with Quinton Jacko at wide receiver and runningback Red Haywood who gained 833 yards on the ground and 373 through the air. The Wildcats defense is led by Harold Brooks. Most of the teams in this district have the potential to challenge for a playoff spot. None of the teams have more athletic ability than the Kountze Lions. The Lions have solid numbers out with over 85 players looking for a spot on the varsity. They have speed and size. They have a new coach. Kountze always seems to have a new coach. Part of this may be the frustration

that coaches go through at KHS. Year after year the school is dominant at basketball and competitive in other sports but struggles on the grid iron. New coach Tracey Franklin will attempt to break the pattern. He has three offensive and five defensive starters returning off a team that finished play in 2011 with a record of 3-7 and was 1-9 in district play. However, they could have easily won a number of more games. Offensively they are led by Earnest Hafford and have good receivers in Darrion Harper and Jamazdon Powell. This year Franklin named James Harper as his offensive coordinator and Frank Middleton as his defensive coordinator. Middleton brings something new to the team after playing years in the NFL He knew success from his youth when he won many honors at West Brook and was selected as one of the first Willie Ray Smith winners. The Lions defense was dominating during the Lions season opening scrimmage against West Hardin. The Woodville Eagles coached by Steve Fentress have five offensive and four defensive starters returning off a 5-6 team that was a bi-district finalist last year. The Eagles finished district play at 4-6. The strength of the team is the defense led by linebacker Marcus Harrison, defensive end Felix Johnson and defensive backs T.C. Mitchell and Phillip noble. This group could also challenge for a playoff position. The Anahuac Panthers have a new coach in Marty Murr and have eight offensive and seven defensive starters returning. This should be a good nucleus to challenge for the playoffs. They have a solid running back in Justin Artis who is over 200 pounds and gained over 1,000 yards. Quarterback Wyatt Raymond started two games last year and should be ready for full time duty. The Panthers real challenge will be to regroup after losing coach Darrell Barbay. The Warren Warriors have eight offensive and eight defensive starters returning off a squad that did not win last year. The team is led by quarterback Kolton Perfect and wide receiver Bryce Glosson. To have success, the team will have to show a lot of improvement.

The Hardin Hornets have seven offensive and nine defensive players returning off a team that finished play in 2011 with a record of 3-7. Like a lot of teams in this district the Hornets will be trying out a new coach. On paper the strength of this team is its size. The club has a group of huge lineman led by Dusten Collins (290) and Corey Mettlen, (330). If they play as big as they are the team could be a problem for opponents. At the end of the season expect to see the standings led by Newton and then in order; East Chambers, Kirbyvllle, Kountze, Woodville, Anahuac, Hardin and Warren.

Big 12 Newcomers look to dethrone Sooner Nation

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com As much as the Oklahoma Sooners have dethrottled the competition in Big 12 play, newcomers to the conference show no fear in what lies ahead. Now that Texas A&M departed to the SEC, for what they call “bigger and better things,” Texas and Oklahoma look for more competition to fill the gaps left behind in the struggling Big 12. The Texas Longhorns will continue to make strides and could get better from its 8-5 (4-5 Big 12) mark from last season. After taking a 4-0 start to the 2011 season, the Longhorns looked poised for a chance at the Big 12 title until a crushing by Oklahoma 55-17 that set the tone for the rest of the season. The Horns return eight offensive starters and six defensive starters. Quarterback has been the question mark for the Horns all of last season and entering spring, that question still remained. Texas Head Coach Mack Brown continues to utilize both returnering quarterbacks David Ash (6-3, 222, so.) and Case McCoy (6-2, 200, jr.) until one significantly grows better. But until then, the Longhorns will also need help in the wide receiver position. Running backs will be no problem now with the addition of highly touted RB Johnathan Gray of Aledo. He joins SchertzCibolo prodigy RB Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron of Mesquite in the backfield, that is poised to be one of the best in the

nation. Defensively, the Horns will continue from its end to the season, which described them as dominating. Texas held the high powered offense of California to 10 points in the Holiday Bowl to claim in victory and end the season on a high note. The Horns defense will be a force to reckon with in 2012 with strong defensive ends Alex Okafor (6-4, 260, sr.) and Jackson Jeffcoat (6-5, 250, jr.). But the best of the de-

fense may be the secondary with safety Kenny Vaccaro (6-1, 215, sr.) and corners Carrington Byndom and Quandre Diggs, who could be the best in the Big 12. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz returns and hopes for a better season defensively for Texas while highly touted former Boise State offensive coordinator Brian Harsin continues to mold the offense into shape. The Oklahoma Sooners will continue to be a top contender for the Big 12 regardless of the loss of defensive stallworts Travis Lewis and Corey Nelson. But returning QB Landry Jones will feel the pressure after losses at wide receiver that could pose a problem for the Sooners. Oklahoma returns eight on offense and seven on defense from a team that finished 10-3, 6-3 in Big

12. The Baylor Bears may have lost RG3, but Head Coach Art Briles feels the Bears will continue to be contenders off of a 10-3, 63 Big 12 finish that saw them win the Alamobowl in a shootout over Washington 67-56. Building off of a prolific bowl season, the Bears return eight offensive and seven defensive starters. Nick Florence (6-1, 205, sr.) of Garland will take the reigns under center with big shoes to fill. Baylor welcomes Oregon transfer RB Lache Seastrunk after he had to sit out the 2011 season under NCAA transfer rules. But the question lies in Baylors defense, which was ranked low in the Big 12 last season. Though seven returners enter the

Realignment makes it tough for Rebels

Realignment did no favors for the Evadale Rebels. For several years they have dominated their district. Even though they play in the smallest eleven man conference, they managed to win 16 games in the past two years and finished play last year with a record of 6-5. This year they will have to prove their worth to win the district championship. They have been placed in a district that includes Tenaha, the defending State Champions of Class 1A Division II. The Tenaha Tigers were 14-0 last year.

Joining the group is the Mount Enterprise Wildcats. This team finished last season at 11-2 and lost to Tenaha in the Regional finals. The other two teams in the district are the Burkevlle Mustangs and the Sabine Pass Sharks. Coach Mark Williams has plenty of weapons to enter the season. He has five starters returning on offense and five on defense. Offensively Williams son, Wes Williams leads the way. The 5-10, 175 pound senior has experi-

ence and should provide leadership for the team. One of his primary targets is Matthew Totten who is the only two way starter returning on the team. He played wide receiver and defensive back last year. In addition, the squad has a pair of offensive linemen returning in Braiden Burford, and 5-10, 230 punt Matthew Akridge. Jacob Connor, a 5-9, 160 pound junior is returning at one of the outside linebacker positions. 215 round junior Tristan Reeves and Brandon Harvey are both returning starters in the defensive line. The team has a number of players who saw action last year and figure to battle for starting positions this year. Among them are Kendall Phillips, a senior receiver/defensive back, Matthew Strickland a junior running back /linebacker, Kaleb Trahan, a junior who will play in the line. Two sophomores, Dalton Clack and Tyler Marks should see action in the line and Hunter Jackson who started at tight end, could see action at linebacker. Garrett Bartosh and Corey Stringer are getting strong looks at receiver and defensive back.

Lady Rebels anticipating repeat championship season The Evadale Lady Rebels opened what they anticipate will be another championship season with a 3-1 win over Newton. Coach Debbie Hollyfield has developed a tradition of excellence on the Evadale campus. Last year the team went all the way to the area round of the playoffs before losing to an Iola team that played to the championship game. That team finished district play undefeated and won a district championship. This year they hope to repeat. Hollyfield says the team is not as strong offensively as last your but they have more leadership and more game experience. She went on to declare that this team was loaded with seniors. She says most of the players have played together since junior high and they are totally team oriented. The group includes two girls who make up the middle blocker combo that are

2012 Lumberton Junior Varsity Raiders

DISTRICT 11-1A-DII averaged 56.6 points per game last year. The Mount Enterprise Wildcats finished last year with two losses. Both of them were to Tenaha. They lost to the Tigers in the regional finals. The Wildcats squad has six offensive and six defensive starters returning off the 2011 squad. One of the starters, fullback Hunter Ammons, a 510, 175 pound runner carried the ball last year 313 times for 2,543 yards. The Evadale Rebels won a district championship in 2011 and finished the year with a 6-5 record. They have a solid corpse of players and a veteran coaching staff to design a game plan to force their highly thought of opponents to stumble. In addition, the Burkeville Mustangs have won state championships.

Last year they were bi-district finalist and they have seven offensive and six defensive starters returning off that club. This squad has two big backs and a history of producing top notch runners. Sabine Pass is the unknown quantity in the district. They are a part of the Port Arthur school system, and while it appears that they don't have the talent to compete with the other four schools, they often have individuals of high quality who play for them. In recent years they have been showing improvement and could be ready to take a step ahead. This point before the games start counting, Tenaha has to be the favorite with Mount Enterprise second, followed by Evadale and Burkeville.

District 10-2A Division I has had the reputation of being the toughest district in Southeast Texas. At the same time the Class 1A division II district has usually been the softest. This year the 2A district is still tough but 11-1A Division II took a giant jump forward and it can lay claim to being the toughest district in Southeast Texas. The Tenaha Tigers, with six offensive and seven defensive starters returning off a 14-0 squad that won the State Championship last year, have to be the favorite to win the district. They are probably the favorites to win the 2012 state championship title. Tenaha has a running back returning who carried the ball 155 times for 1,409 yards and 17 touchdowns, and another who picked up over 600 rushing yards. The offensive juggernaut

The Lumberton Raiderettes have dominated halftime along with the Mighty Raider Marching Band. This year plans to be no different. This year, fans can look forward to the largest group of Raiderettes than

ever before. The group has a total of 34 girls, with seven returning seniors, 10 juniors, six sophomores and 11 freshmen joining the team. Officers for the 20122013 Raiderettes are Captain Katie Deaton, who served as First Lieutenant last year, First Lieutenant Calli Roberts, Lieutenant Mallory Domingue, Lieutenant Katelyn Kirk, Lieutenant Emily Majors and Lieutenant Baylie Fox. This year fans can expect to enjoy the Raiderettes traditional oil derrick routine. The oil derrick routine has been a long standing tradition at Lumberton High School, beginning in the late 1970's.

Raiderettes will be adding a new prop routine to the line up, which allows them to incorporate large wooden boxes into the routine. They will also be debuting their jazz, kick and pom routine. Director April York, a graduate of Silsbee, will be returning for her fourth year to lead the team and will also have new Raiderette Assistant Director, Hope Swearingen, also a graduate of Silsbee. This will be Swearingen's first year as assistant director. The Raiderettes will be competing in the American Dance Drill Team Contest on Galveston Island and will be taking three officer routines and three team

routines. York stated that while it takes a lot of work and time management for the team to attend the contests, with all of their other responsibilities, they do look forward to and enjoy the competition. To raise money for the coming contests and events that the girls will attend, a fall clinic and a spring clinic will be held as their main fundraising events. The fall clinic allows younger aspiring Raiderettes to learn a routine and perform with the Raiderettes at a home football game. The spring routine allows them to learn the routine and perform at See LHS on PG. 33, SEC. 3
