Emergency personnel work on the scene of a two-vehicle head-on collision that claimed the life of Silsbee High School senior Jamarcus Myers on Easter Sunday. Four others were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, one with serious injuries.

Head-on collision claims teen Silsbee senior falls victim to a crash on Easter Sunday, weeks before his high school graduation.

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com A two car accident on FM 418, just west of Silsbee, claimed the life of a Silsbee High School senior and left four others injured. According to Department of Public Safety Troopers, the crash occurred at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, when a 2001 Ford truck driven by Jamarcus Myers, 18, attempted to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone while

traveling eastbound on FM 418. The Ford struck a 2008 Dodge truck head-on. The Dodge truck was driven by Michael Thompson, 48, of Buna. Myers was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Kathy Simpson. Thompson was transported to St. Elizabeth by ambulance with serious injuries. Three other passengers in the Dodge truck were also transported to St. Elizabeth hospital with unknown injuries, according to reports.

The crash remains under investigation by DPS investigators and more information will be released when available. A community memorial service was held at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 22 on the football field of Silsbee High School. Family, friends, community members, and students honored Myers' memory with song and prayer. A candlelight vigil will also be held Thursday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Silsbee.

Kountze man pleads guilty in fraud case

On or about May 5, 2007, Thornton’s wife incurred a charge on her personal Citi Bank Advantage Credit card in the amount of $627.83. On May 15, 2007, Thornton wrote a check made out to “City Master Carpenters” on the HCDRA checking account. He then signed the check on behalf of HCDRA. The check was then sent, along with a copy of Thornton’s wife’s credit card statement to Citi Bank where the HCDRA check was processed and her account credited in the amount of the check. Thornton knew that the charge was not made for the benefit of HCDRA, and he intended to convert the funds for his own use or that of another to pay off the outstanding credit card debt,

A 53-year-old Kountze man has pleaded guilty in connection with his role in theft of government property, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales today. Tony Lynn Thornton, Sr. pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with theft of government property of a value of less than $1,000 today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin. According to information presented in court, in August 2007, Thornton was the executive director and also served as a member of the board of directors of the Hardin County Disaster Recovery Alliance (HCDRA), a non-profit organization chartered by the State of Texas. HCDRA’s main function and purpose was to operate exclusively for charitable, educational,

and faith-based purposes, including but not limited to improvement of the condition of victims of Hurricane Rita, giving priority to the elderly, the disabled, the poor and the underprivileged. Thornton controlled and operated the HCDRA residential repair and renovation program. As part of his duties, Thornton selected contractors that were used to repair hurricane damaged homes in Hardin, Jefferson, and Orange Counties. Thornton was to secure the payment for the contractors after each repair job was finished, and inspect and verity that the work was completed. Thornton maintained control over the JCDRA checking account, often writing and signing checks to pay HCDRA vendors and contractors.

Audit comes back with positive results.

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com The City of Silsbee is on track to make budget after a review of financials presented by City Manager Tommy Bartosh on Monday. "We are actually doing extremely well," Bartosh said. "We are halfway through the year and at or below 50 percent on our budget." Both expenditures and revenue columns reached the average of 50 percent levels, which is on target for councilpersons. The biggest revenue has been fines and forfeitures at 52.76 percent at the halfway point of the fiscal year. While Bartosh says that the sales tax is still good at 48.59 percent, they expect better numbers during the second half of the year. Bartosh also said that an increase in building permits in the city has helped the license and permits column tremendously.

Also an increase in industrial/distribution has reached 49.5 percent. In expenditures, water/sewer is at 54.34 percent and the police department is at 54 percent. General expenditures are at 41.98 percent. Bartosh says that a big portion of expenditures will be spent in the summer with projects that include the overlay of Howard Road. In an audit report presented, the city is in good standing with $2.3 million in the fund balance. The audit report showed $3.8 million in revenue, $3.4 million in expenditures and included a transfer of $234,000. The audit report was approved unanimously with one councilperson absent, Thomas Tyler. The economic development audit report also showed a positive fund balance of $486,083 that included $96,000 in expenditures.

Transgendered woman returns to work in a different position at Lumberton ISD.

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com Laura Jane Klug, the transgender substitute teacher who was suspended from her job at Lumberton Independent School District has returned to the district as an employee, though she will not be teaching in the classroom. The district came under scrutiny after concerned parents contacted Superintendent John Valastro and the LISD school board regarding the effect of her presence in the classroom with students. Klug was "temporarily relieved from her duties" after word spread of her being a transgender substitute teacher. Parents and community members gathered at a school board meeting on Thursday, April 10, to share their position and opinions, for and against, Klug being employed by the district. The race for U.S. Congressional District 36 has turned somewhat dirty when Ben Streusand unleashed a barrage of negative television ads and telephone polls. He is accusing Brian Babin, the leader in the race, of raising taxes exorbitantly during the time he served as mayor and city councilman for the City of Woodville, and as a board member of the Woodville Independent

School District. Babin responds, that while he was mayor and on the Woodville City Council, they lowered taxes over 70 percent. He stated that while he was a member of the Woodville ISD Board of Trustees in the early to mid 90's, the school district had to comply with the equalization of "Robin Hood" legislation forced on them by the Democratic controlled Texas Legislature. Babin continued on, "Through it all we managed to keep taxes down and still provided for the students while protecting the tax payers of the district." The Robin Hood mandate was ruled unconstitutional by the Texas Supreme Court two years later. Babin went on to explain that Ben Streusand does not even live in Congressional District 36. He lives in Congressional District 10, which runs all the way to Austin. Babin says that Streusand has never held a public office, or position in which he has had to balance a budget, or make hard decisions. His points were supported by Mandy K. Risinger, the city administrator of Woodville. She says, "I recently saw a political advertisement on local television claiming that property

within the districts, then setting a tax rate that will produce the needed revenue to operate the district. The Silsbee Bee publisher heard the statements by the Ben Streusand campaign during a phone interview several weeks ago, and challenged them on the basis of their statements. The Streusand campaign refused to release any statements. District 36 has not had local representation during the past two years. During that time period, Steve Stockman was the elected congressman. When he took office, he lived outside the district. He later stated that after the election he moved into the district. There is no law that requires a Congressional representative to live within the district that he represents. It is possible that all the congressmen from Texas could live within the city limits of Austin, Dallas or Houston. This is legal but leaves many areas under represented. Both Streusand and Stockman have received heavy support from members of the Tea party, who seem to believe that the representation of their objectives is more important that the representation of the people of the district. If you want real representation of your district, you need to vote for the representative from your district and in this instance it is the man from the county to the north of us – Brian Babin.

taxes increased 36 percent in the City of Woodville during the 1980's. I have reviewed the ad valorem tax rates for that period and find that claim to be false." She went on to say that the ad valorem tax rate fell from $1.25 in 1980 to $0.37 in 1989. The Tyler County Appraisal District also responded with a letter from Eddie Chalmers, Chief Appraiser for Tyler County, about school tax rates in Tyler county. The Texas Legislature created a new financing formula that consolidated the 1,058 school districts into 188 County Education Districts (CED) for the 1991 and 1992 school years. These CEDs set a tax rate for their county schools based on the total wealth, or the taxable value within their district. The rate was then applied to each taxable property as part of the school taxes. The school boards were then able to set a much lower school tax rate than previous years because of the CED levy. Each property owner paid school taxes to both the CED, and to the school district. The Supreme Court ruled in a 7-2 decision on Jan. 22, 1992 that the County Education Districts were unconstitutional. The CEDs ceased to exist for the 1993 tax year. In 1993, the school districts had no choice but to revert to the previous method of calculating tax rates. That method consists of taking the total taxable value

Loss stretches across community I didn't know Jamarcus Myers, nor had I ever spoke to the popular 18-year old senior athlete from Silsbee High School. I remember him playing defensive tackle for the Tigers his senior season, and I do remember taking a photo of him recovering a fumble at a game. On Sunday, tragedy struck when the community learned that he had lost his life in a wreck on FM 418 on Easter Sunday. Being a small community that is close knit, the news traveled quickly, albeit with questions as to what happened. All most people knew between the hours of 9-10 a.m., is that Myers was involved in an accident, and it didn't look good. Though everyone prepares for the worst, receiving the news is never easy to handle. Silsbee High School students reached for their phones and sent text to each other, and even tweeted each other. That morning, as I was dressing, I heard sirens from my home

in Silsbee. I even heard a helicopter. Fearing the worst, I looked at my wife and told her something terrible has happened. A bad accident somewhere. My inner journalistic side wanted to grab my camera and notepad, and chase down the sirens. Though I was dressed for Easter church service, I was a tongue away from telling my wife and stepdaughter to go without me. It was a little after 10:30 when I received a text from a friend, and fellow colleague that was once in the newspaper business. He asked me if I was going to the "wreck". I responded that I had no idea what was going on, and that I was on my way to church. His response was simple – Enjoy the beautiful Easter serv-

ice. I did not know a thing, even while at church. But something was eating at me. Yes, being a journalist, I was eager to find out what was going on because that is our nature. But at the same time, I knew it was terrible, and I was scared to find out. During service, my mind wandered, and suddenly I began to have thoughts of dear family and friends that were lost. I began to lose it and tried to control what would have been weeping. I prayed for someone and prayed for my lost loved ones to care for this person. I don't know what, or who I was praying for, but my intuition was strong and vibrant on Easter Sunday. I read my horoscopes each day and always see how my Zodiac sign is very intuitive about things and about people. For me, it is very much true and spot on, unfortunately in some cases. Sometimes I don't like being intuitive because, sometimes,

knowing isn't always the best thing. When we left church, my stepdaughter shared the news she had learned via Twitter that Jamarcus had lost his life. I immediately went on my Twitter feed and saw the hundreds of condolences from students of Silsbee, flooding the feed. Jamarcus was a special kid and made an impression on hundreds, whether he knew them or not. Almost every post was either about his smile, his sense of humor, or his caring heart. Something told me not to go to this wreck. And something told me to pray for him as I wept for his soul in church. He left a lot of memories for a lot of Silsbee High School students. Now it is their turn to share what he gave them. I'm looking forward to meeting his young man some day, and seeing him smile to welcome me.

Patterson home named Garden Club Yard of the Month The Silsbee Garden Club has chosen the home of Frances Patterson at 1245 Gentry Road as the April, Yard of the Month. The country styled cedar home sits on two acres and is dotted with many bushes, trees, and

flowers which are native of this area. The native plants are thriving, and are in many stages of blooming and budding. On each side of the front yard are two Grancy's gray beard trees and two wisterias, balancing the yard for the many areas of interest there. The gray beards came from the woods and have a unique beard-like bloom dangling from the branches. The wisterias are natural of the area also. An old iron pump is in the middle of a future flower bed in the center of the yard. A black cauldron sits ready for some more trailing petunias to come boiling over its sides. The flowering plants haven't been planted yet, but Ms. Patterson is ready to put them in. Vines of roses hold a few future blooms as they climb up a fence supported by three bird houses. Driving by the home, one can see double azaleas, a fiery-red Japanese maple, and a berried yaupon near the road. Deeper into the yard are wild azaleas, bridal wreath, a purple magnolia, and loropetalum, mixed with a few oak trees. Near the home is a large palm tree with a magnolia beside it. A hedge of red-tip bushes boarders the driveway. Not all of the plants and trees are mentioned here but each one

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com Members of the Hardin County Sheriff's Office, Crime Victims Assistance Program, Silsbee and Kountze Police Departments, Hardin County Health Department, Hardin County Adult and Juvenile Probation, and many other agencies, gathered together last week to participate in the creation of the Hardin County Child Fatality Review Team. The Hardin County Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT) is a part of 200 teams across the state that combine the expertise of broad array of disciplines with a mission to reduce the number of child deaths within the county. The team's purpose is threefold: understand the safety risks for children, raise public awareness of risk and work to reduce the number of preventable child deaths, and to work with other state-wide CFRT's to promote public awareness and make recommendations to the governor and the legislature for changes in law, policy, and practice to reduce the number of preventable child deaths. Texas Child Fatality Review Teams were established in 1995 by legislation and currently have 73 local teams that cover 206 of 254 of Texas Counties. The teams are made up of members from healthcare (including physicians and nursing staff), Child Protective Services, law enforcement, the court system and child advocacy departments, as well as school principals, counselors and other professionals who are equipped to understand the many factors involved in child deaths and can help to identify protective factors that could prevent future deaths.

This was the first official meeting of the new Hardin County CFRT. The meeting, which was a "planning" meeting, included information and training led by Susan Rodriguez, who is a part of the State CFRT. Members went over several instances of child deaths, whether it be accidental, homicidal, suicidal, or natural causes. In each case, the members examine reports and medical records in confidence to try and identify risk factors and protective measures that could be taken to prevent future deaths. Some of the cases examined involved child abuse trends, drownings, ATV child rollovers and accidents, and distracted driving. Rodriguez educated members of several factors and statistics of child death including that the highest number of children that die from child abuse are ages four and under and that a large number of accidental deaths occur when there is a change in a routine or habit. Other factors discussed were the high amount of deaths of teens who die in automobile accidents while texting and instances of suicide of teens after being bullied. Accidental deaths such as pool and lake or creek drownings, and deaths in house fires, due to lack of smoke detectors, were also covered. In each case, members tried to determine a pattern and if any amount of education and public awareness such as seat belt checks, the donation of smoke alarms, and education of the signs of child abuse could possibly prevent a death in the future. Colwell is working with other members of the team and local businesses to create community activities that will help educate citizens on the prevention of child death. With summer approaching, the group is hoping to recruit volunteers and local businesses for sponsorship of a possible ATV and Pool Safety Day that will promote education. Chief Mark Davis of the Silsbee Police Department, who is a member of the Hardin County CFRT was

careful to explain in an interview that this is not a "cold case review". "This is a collaborative effort between many agencies to examine cases, look into what led to the death and see if there is any information and/or education that we can bring to the community as public awareness to help prevent another death," Davis said. "In the blink of an eye, a life can vanish, and if we can prevent that somehow then we are going to do everything we can to bring that information

to the public." Both Davis and Colwell both said that all information discussed in the meetings is and will remain confidential. No specific case information will be shared with the public. The ultimate goal of the Hardin County Child Fatality Review Team is to come together and prevent child death. "There is power in numbers," Chief Davis said. The Hardin County Child Fatality Review Team will meet again in two weeks.

Mind Over Matter Silsbee senior sprinter making fourth regional appearance. By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com After seven years of running sprints competitively, Silsbee sprinter Chanissey Fowler will say that she would be lying if she still doesn’t get nervous. Stretching in her lane, focusing down the path to the finish line, and getting down on the starting blocks – the butterflies take over. But once that gun fires, Fowler is off to the races and perfectly focused to the finish line. The small framed senior is timid when talking about her races, but she speaks volumes through her running. “From the seventh grade to now, nothing ever changes,” Fowler said. “I still get really nervous before a race.” Running in the seasons high school meets throughout track season may be nerve-wracking for Fowler, but when it comes to racing at the coveted UIL State Track and Field Championships each May, then it is a whole different story. Fowler has been good enough her entire high school career to qualify for the state meet in the 100-meters, and also two sprint relays. But with experience comes success, and Fowler is aiming for her third state appearance in four years. She will be competing at the regional track meet this weekend at Turner Stadium in Humble, qualifying in the 100-meter dash and also the anchor in both the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay. Running has been her passion since seventh grade, being the youngest of two

girls, she didn’t quite follow the footsteps of her older sister being a star basketball player for Silsbee. Besides track, Fowler has played volleyball, but her heart is running. “As soon as volleyball season is over, I start training,” she said. Fowler competes in school track and has also competed in AAU track during the summer. Her fastest time of 11.83 in the 100-meter dash was set at the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bear Relays this season. She ran the race in 12.2 at the area meet recently. She is destined for another state appearance and sets a goal to never quit. With idols like USA sprinter and Olympic medalist Carmelita Jeter, Fowler has a chance to do her best at the meet. Last year, she finished in first place at the class 3A Region III finals of the 100meter dash, but settled for seventh place at the state meet. “Being in Austin was overwhelming to me,” Fowler said. “Just the whole experience was unbelievable.” She may have more gold medals than one can imagine through four years of running track in high school, but Fowler isn’t quite ready to give it up. She plans on college after high school and is hoping to continue her track career, particularly at Lamar University in Beaumont. But her ultimate goal is the Olympics. “It has always been a dream of mine,” she continued. “I

won’t give up trying.” In the meantime, Fowler knows she will be nervous this weekend, but ready for the challenge. As she says, people may be talking to her pre-race and they think she is ignoring them. In reality, she is focused – and ready for another state appearance. Kountze High School had a boys pairs team and a mixed doubles pair qualify for the state tournament at the regional tennis meet last week. The mixed doubles team of Madison Read and Austin Marshall won four straight matches without losing a set. In the first round, they defeated Edgewood by scores of 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, they defeated Central Heights 6-0 and 7-5. Then in the third round, they dropped White Oak 7-5 and 6-2. Read and Marshall then faced a different team from Central Heights in the finals and the Kountze team came away with a victory 6-3, 7-5. Both Marshall and Read plan to attend school at Lamar University after graduating. They both plan to concentrate on academics and put athletics behind them. Marshall has been one of the all-around athletes at KHS. He was a first team all district player at wide receiver, kicker and cornerback while on the football team. Then he was a contributing member of the basketball team. He ran track and ran a leg on both the 800- and 400meter relay teams that placed. He also ran several sprints but failed to qualify in the sprints.

He was a member of the mixed doubles team that was first this year at regionals and hopes to win at state. He is an outstanding student who is a regular member of the Kountze Honor Roll. He also is active in the Wildwood Baptist Church. Madison plans to study business at Lamar after graduating from KHS. She has run cross country and played a little basketball while at KHS but her main sport has been tennis. She went to state in the mixed doubles as a sophomore and now has won district and regional meets. She will make another trip back to the state tournament as a senior. The boys team of Landry Linn and Drew Anderson are returning to state. They placed second in the state meet last year. Both boys are outstanding students. Linn is a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council. His future plans are to attend Lamar or East Texas Baptist University and play tennis. He has played many sports in high school. He ran cross country and went to regionals with the varsity team. He played basketball and was the leading scorer off the bench for Kountze.

The Lions mixed doubles team and the boys doubles teams both qualified for state. The group includes: (left to right) Madison Read, Drew Anderson, Landry Linn and Austin Marshall.

Linn is active in the youth group at Wildwood Baptist Church. Drew Anderson is the valedictorian at KHS this year. He is in NHS and on the Honor Roll. He is the Senior Class President. In addition he is the vice president of the FFA. He also is the captain of the drum line and is the drummer at the Happy Valley church. He runs cross country and has been a regular member of the tennis team. His future plans are to attend Lamar and study biology and obtain a pre-med degree. He hopes to become an orthopedic surgeon. All four of the students are members of the Christians in Action club. During their junior year the team of Anderson and Linn won districts and then were second at the regional meet behind a team from White Oak. At state, they placed second behind the same team

from White Oak. This year promises to be different. They won district and had their only serious challenge at the regional meet from a Kirbyville team that they had already defeated a couple of times during the year. In the first round, they defeated a team from Sabine Gladewater 6-0, 6-0. In the second round they dropped to a White Oak team 6-1,6-2. Then in the semi-finals, they beat a pair from Centerville 60, 6-1. They met the Kirbyville squad in the finals and both teams were in for a real test. Anderson and Linn won the first set 6-4. Then they lost 7-5. The seventh went to extra games before the Kountze pulled off the victory 7-6. Both the mixed doubles team and the boys doubles team will be competing in the state meet on April 28-29 at Texas A&M University.

Tigers sweep Hamshire-Fannett GUS’ TIRE SHOP Partain’s double sparks Tigers in fifth. By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com The Silsbee Tigers are closer to a playoff spot after sweeping Hamshire-Fannett in the second game of the season. Silsbee (15-6-1, 7-3 in 213A) remain tied with West Orange-Stark (19-4, 7-3) in the league standings for second place behind Bridge City (202, 10-0). On Friday, it looked to be a pitchers duel against the Longhorns, now standing in fourth place in the district. It took five innings for both teams to get on the scoreboard with Hamshire-Fannett taking the honors on a 2-run lead at the top of the fifth inning. Hamshire-Fannett scored its two runs on Silsbee errors. Lead off batter Johnson reached on a single and Longhorns third baseman Hicks reached on a fielder’s choice. Silsbee tied the score at the bottom of the fifth inning with a single that drove in Chase Partain and Chris Nesbitt with no outs. Colby LeBlanc scored on a wild pitch and the Tigers took

Lady Tigers edge H-F in final district game Silsbee to face Huffman-Hargrave in bidistrict. By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com The Silsbee Lady Tigers needed a seventh inning rally in a big way and came away victorious in a nailbiter as Tiger Softball Field on Friday. Silsbee (16-8, 7-5 in Dist. 213A) defeated Hamshire-Fannett 32 to hold on to the fourth position in the league standings. Silsbee will face no. 26 Huffman-Hargrave in a best-of-3 series beginning on Friday with the first game at Huffman-Hargrave High School at 7 p.m. The second game will be at Silsbee at 5 p.m. and if a third game is needed, it will be played 30 minutes after Game 2. On Friday, Silsbee got on the board first after a run by Kaitlin Kerl, who led the bottom of the first inning with a single. Kerl scored on an RBI from Bailey Root. Hamshire-Fannett tied the game 1-1 at the top of the second inning after a wild pitch scored pitcher Biggett, who had reached on a single. In the fourth inning, Silsbee regained the lead 2-1 when Tia Martin singled to drive in Kaitlynn Halverson, who had reached on a single on two outs earlier. Silsbee pitcher Bailey Root struggled in the sixth inning giving up two walks, and two singles that drove in shortstop Broussard. The run tied the game 2-2. The Lady Tigers left one stranded at the bottom of the sixth inning when Halverson reached on a walk. But two routine outs gave Hamshire-Fannett a chance to lead at the top of the seventh. Root found her rhythm in the seventh inning and gave the Lady Tigers a chance at the victory after fanning three of the four batters she

an RBI. April Rawson was 2 for 3 and Halverson was 1 for 1. Root went all seven in the circle for Silsbee, giving up two earned runs on six hits while fanning 13 Hamshire-Fannett batters.

Lady Rebels battle to co-dist. title By Scott Loar The Evadale Lady Rebel softball team has battled all season long and they had the opportunity to make one last stand on Tuesday of last week as they completed the regular season. After a senior night victory, they tied for the district crown for the no. 1 seed and earned a bye to the area round of the playoffs. Evadale faced Hull-Daisetta, a team that defeated the Lady Rebels earlier in the season. The Lady Bobcats entered the game with a single loss while the Lady Rebels had two blemishes on their record. Evadale’s 13-3 victory sealed the co-championship and Coach Rusty Minyard could not be more proud of his team. “They battled all season long and this championship was fought for and deserved as the team rallied every time they faced adversity,” he said. In the game, Wendy Williams was 1 for 4 with two runs and two RBI’s. Cassie LeBlanc was 1 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, Haleigh Ashworth was 1 for 4 with a run and four RBI’s, Jordy Conner was 1 for 4 with a run and two RBI’s, Hannah Oldbury went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI’s, Camilla Howard was 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI, and Britney Curtis was 2 for 3 with a run scored. The team will host Orange Community Christian in a warm up game on Thursday afternoon as they await the winner of the bidistrict round. At press time, the two teams that will square in that round are still not determined as districts have until Wednesday to certify

the teams that have made the playoffs. Seniors Brittney Curtis, Camilla Howard and Amy Mid-

kiff were recognized before the game for their commitment to the team and the leadership that they provided to the team this season.

The Boys & Girls Club of Hardin County is currently raising funds in order to provide a summer program this year. To fully fund the summer program, we need to raise $30,000. Our summer program is much needed for the economically disadvantaged working parents. Parents can’t afford the cost of day care leaving them searching for adequate supervision of their children while they are at work this summer. Our summer program is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This allows the parents to drop their children off before work and pick them up after work. We charge a mere $45 for the entire summer, making this affordable for all. We provide the youth a free breakfast and lunch each day. This is important because 93% of the youth we serve are on the school district’s free lunch program. Many of the children we serve would go hungry or lack proper nutritional meals during the summer. The Boys & Girls Club of Hardin County provides a safe, affordable, positive, and fun place for the youth during the summer. We prevent youth from getting involved with drugs, alcohol, gangs, juvenile crime, teenage pregnancies and violence. Youth get involved with these hazards when they are unsupervised or neglected. Our summer program is critical to the welfare of the Hardin County youth and disadvantaged families. Please consider a contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of Hardin County so we can provide our program this summer. Evadale Rebels continue to roll through district play By Scott Loar The Evadale Rebels continue to roll through their district opponents with ease as they defeated Sabine Pass 13-0 and Leggett 16-0 in action last week. In the Sabine Pass contest, Chris Moore got the win as he pitched a no-hitter striking out 13 Shark batters. He issued one walk but it was wiped out on a double play. There was an error in the fifth inning, but all in all it was a dominating performance on the mound. Adrian Valencia went 3 for 3 with four RBI’s while Moore helped his own cause going 3 for 3 with a home run and a double and three RBI’s. The team traveled to Leggett on Friday a game originally

scheduled for Thursday due to bad weather. The game was played at 2 p.m. Matthew Terry picked up the win tossing a one hitter while striking out eight. Cody Ingram was 3 for 4 with a home run and scored two runs. Moore went 2 for 3 and Colby Thompson was also 2 for 3. The Rebels have two games left. Senior night on Tuesday against Hull-Daisetta and then traveling to High Island on Friday. The Friday game is somewhat in question as High Island has a regional track meet that would affect players in both sports. The game could be pushed to Saturday and even as late as Monday at 2p.m.. It all depends on player availablity. The showdown that lies ahead

could be with Big Sandy. Both team have split the season and it will likely be headed for a onegame playoff to determine which team will enter the playoffs as the no. 1 seed from the district that gets a bye in the first round of the playoffs. But if the High Island game has to be played on Monday, then the playoff with Big Sandy would be at a neutral site Monday at 7 p.m. in order to be legal with UIL rules. “We have two games this week and need to take them one at a time,” Coach Mark Williams said. “We can’t control what happens with the High Island game, all we can control is ourselves. We will do what we need to do, when we need to do it! That is the only way we can play it.”

Little Dribbler Tournament The Silsbee Little Dribblers will hold their first annual Jamarcus Myers Hardwood Classic tournament to raise funds for their trip to the National Tournament in Bryan. The event will be held in Silsbee on April 24-26. Over 30 teams from Beaumont, Diboll, Brookeland, Warren, Livingston, Cleveland,

Navasota, Nacogdoches and more have confirmed that they will be present for the games. The varsity and senior games will be held at Silsbee High School. The major and junior games will be at the middle school. During the tournament, donations will be taken to benefit the

family of Jamarcus Myers who was no. 56 on the Silsbee Tiger Football team last year. The SHS senior died in a two car accident on FM 418 on Sunday. For more information people can contact Ricky Maze, Sr. at 767-4647 or Tamika Renfro at 466-1503.
