Theology of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

AsaChristianlearningcommunitywhosemissionistopreparemenandwomenfor ministry, wehaveacharge “to work with churches towards the maturing of students so that their experiential knowledge of God in Christ is evidenced in their character, outlook, conduct, relationships, and involvement in society.” Inthiswork, weareguidedbythefollowing theologicalunderstandingofdiversity, inclusionandequity.Thefoundationforour understandingofdiversityasanessentialelementinDivineunityis:creation, theTrinity, theGospel(Luke4:16-30),theChurch’smission(Matthew28:16-20),andeschatology (Revelation7:9-10).

God’screationistremendouslydiversewhilealsounifiedinbringingglorytotheone, triuneGod.God’screationofhumansisdescribedas“verygood,”andthatincludedthe diversityalreadypresent(Genesis1:31).Thisdiversityinimage-bearersreflectsthe Trinity’sunity-in-diversity.

AdamandEve’srebellionandthebrokennessoftherelationshipbetweenhumansandGod hasmarredallhumanrelationships,includingbrokenrelationshipbetweenracesand ethnicities.Godcondemnsallinjusticeandoppression,butespeciallypreyingontheweak ormarginalized(Isaiah10:1–4).God’sgreatlovebroughttheincarnation,andits expressiononearthculminatedinthecrossasJesusdiedforoursins.Divineloveflowed fromdivinejusticetowardhealinghumaninjusticepreeminentlythroughChrist’sselfsacrifice.God’sholiness,justice,andresurrectionpowerisourhopeforreconciliationwith GodandthefoundationforourlifetogetherasthepeopleofGod(Ephesians2:14–18).

Godcallsustowardacommunityoflove,justice,andrighteousness.Asmembersofthe householdoffaith,wecometogetherinourdifferences wecannotbethefamilyofGod withoutthosewhoaredifferentfromus(Romans12:3-8).Thisinclusionaryposture, characterizedbyloveinourcommunities,ourdiscipleship,andourmissionisevidenceof lifeintheSpiritofGod(1Corinthians12:12-27).Additionally,wemustbeajust community oneofequityandrespectasweserveandhonoroneanotherasbetterthan ourselves(Philippians2:3).

AmidaworldthatisfarfromtheGardenofEden,wefindeasyevidenceofevilintheform ofcorruption,discrimination,abuse,enmity,slander,hatred,andmore bothinsystems andinindividualpractices.Therefore,welamentandrepentfromanywaywhichwehave participatedinthisevil,activelyorpassively,andpursuethemanifestationofGod’slove, seekingforgivenessfromeachotherandfromtheLord.Godintendsforustolivein shalom,andwelongforthevisionofRevelationinwhichhumanityflourishestogether worshippingintheunmediatedpresenceofGodinHisholycity:

“After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. And they were shouting with a great roar, ‘Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!’” (Revelation7:9-10,NLT)

Whilewewait,wearecalledtoprayforandworktowardacommunitythatreflectsthe natureofthetriuneGod:oneoflove,justice,andrighteousness.
