TheStudentHandbookisanofficialdocumentthatisessentialandbindingforallstudents.Itis basedonthecurrentstructureandpoliciesoftheSeminaryPleaseusethishandbookasa referenceguidetoacademicandstudentlifeatGordonConwell.Itcontainsinformation regardingpoliciesandproceduresthathaveadirectinfluenceonstudents.Eachstudentisheld responsiblefortheinformationcontainedintheStudentHandbook Policyandprocedurechangesthatmightbemadeduringtheyearwillbeconveyed expeditiouslytominimizeinconvenience.Whenchangesaremade,itisthepolicyofthe Seminarytogivesuchnoticeaswillensureadjustmentwithoutundueinconvenience. TherootsofGordon‐ConwellTheologicalSeminaryreachbackover100yearstotwourban EastCoastschools:theBostonMissionaryTrainingInstituteandtheTempleProgramin PhiladelphiaThetwoschoolssharedmuchincommon.Itwasthelate1800sandimmigrants werepouringintotheircities,onlytodiscoverlittleaccesstoeducation.Bothschoolsdesired toengagethesenewresidentsinministryandpreparethemforthechurchandformissions.

GordonConwell’sfirststudentslearned,studied,dined,andlivedinKerrBuilding,oneofthe

Throughtheyears,theseschoolswouldthriveandgrow,changetheirnames,andultimately mergein1969asGordon‐Conwell.ButtheircommitmentstotheBibleandtotheGospel mandatesteadfastlyremained.WearegratefultoGodforthisrocksolidfoundationandfor thewisemenandwomenwhohavesustainedandnurtureditformorethanacentury.

INTRODUCTION

Priortothemerger,boththeConwellSchoolofTheology(previouslyTempleProgram)and theGordonDivinitySchool(previouslytheBostonMissionaryTrainingInstitute)hadstrong commitmentstodevelopingministriesinurbanenvironments.Thisdesiretoengage meaningfullyinthecitywascarriedforthinthecreationofGordon‐ConwellTheological Seminary,andfinallymaterializedin1976whentheCenterforUrbanMinisterialEducation (CUME)openeditsdoorsundertheleadershipofDr.EldinVillafañe.InpartnershipwithDr. MichaelHaynes,retiredSeniorPastorofthehistoricTwelfthBaptistChurchandTrusteeof Gordon‐Conwell,andDr.DouglasHall,PresidentoftheEmmanuelGospelCenter;CUMEwas createdinordertoprovidecontextualizedtheologicaleducationforpastorsandministry leadersinurbancommunitiesservingamongHispanic,AfricanAmerican,Caribbean,and Asianpopulations.

WhatbetterplacesthanintwourbanBaptistchurches:theClarendonBaptistChurchin Boston,whereRev.A.J.Gordonservedaspastor;andGraceBaptistTempleinPhiladelphia,led byRussellConwell.Openingtheirdoorstomenandwomenofallracesandethnicities,each introducedministryeducationdesignedspecificallyforpeoplelivinginthecity.Underpinning theeducationatbothschoolswasabiblicalfoundationthatstillanimatesourSeminarytoday: acommoncommitmenttotheauthorityofScripture,theexperienceofthenewbirthinChrist, biblicalorthodoxycenteredinChristandtheIncarnation,andthegreatthemeofmissions.

AfterthemergerofGordonDivinitySchoolandConwellSchoolofTheologyin1969,the newlyformedGordonConwellTheologicalSeminaryputdownrootsinSouthHamilton,MA. ThepropertywasoncehometoadevoutCatholicfamilywhowilledtheirlush118acreestate totheCatholicChurch.Aftertheowners’death,theChurchtransformedtheinheritedestate intoaCarmeliteJuniorSeminary.RelicsofthatSeminary’sdayscanbeseenaroundcampus.

Classesareofferedonweekends,evenings,andinoneweekintensives;andstudentscan secureadegreeentirelythroughweekendclasses.Studentsalsocoupleacademiclearningwith practicalministryexperiencebypartneringwithaprofessorandaseasonedChristianleader throughapprenticeshipatalocalchurch.

TheCharlottecampusbeganclassesin199293drivenbythevisionofcontextualized theologicaleducationPresidentCooleyandothersofvisionintheGordonConwell communitywantedtoaddressthespecificneedsofthechurchintheSoutheast,astronghold ofGordonConwellgraduates.Theprimaryobjectivewastocreateaprogramoftheological study,whichwouldutilizethecontextofministryasaprimaryingredientintheteaching learningprocess.Asaresult,theCharlotteprogramcontextisidentified,described, encountered,andutilizedasaprincipalfacetinthecurriculum.Theclassicalmodelof theologicaleducationhasbeenintegratedwithamentoredministryconcept.Thus,theoryis movedimmediatelytopractice,andpracticalapplicationbecomestheavenueforengaging theorytheology.Technologyisutilizedtoenhanceandfacilitatetheteachinglearningprocess. Today,theprogramhasbecomeamodelforintegratedtheologicaleducation.

Referredtoasthe“HolyHill”bylocals,GordonConwellsitsatthehighestelevationin Hamilton.OurfamilyfriendlycampusissituatedjustnorthofBostonandafewmilesfromthe ocean,allowingstudentsandfamiliestobenefitfromNewEngland’srichheritageand resources.

HistoryoftheCharlotteCampus

GordonConwell Jacksonvillewasfoundedin2006attheimpetusofacommitteeofalumni pastorsinJacksonvilleandotherchurchleaderswhowantedtobringourcommitmentto educationalinnovation,academicrigor,andfaithfulnesstotheGospeltostudentsalready engagedfulltimeinministryorthemarketplace.InitiallyanextensionsiteoftheCharlotte campus,GordonConwell Jacksonvilleisnowourfourthcampus.

TheJacksonvillelocation,whichgraduateditsfirstclassin2010,offersthreeATSaccredited degrees:theMasterofDivinity,theMasterofArtsinChristianLeadership,andtheMasterof Arts(ChristianThought).Itsadultlearningformat,modeledonthatoftheCharlottecampus, emphasizesbothhandsontrainingandinclasslearning.

AsaChristianlearningcommunitywhosemissionistopreparemenandwomenforministry, wehaveacharge“toworkwithchurchestowardsthematuringofstudentssothattheir experientialknowledgeofGodinChristisevidencedintheircharacter,outlook,conduct, relationships,andinvolvementinsociety.”Inthiswork,weareguidedbythefollowing theologicalunderstandingofdiversity,inclusionandequity.Thefoundationforour understandingofdiversityasanessentialelementinDivineunityis:creation,theTrinity,the Gospel(Luke4:1630),theChurch’smission(Matthew28:1620),andeschatology(Revelation 7:910). Weholdtoabiblicalstandardforhumanflourishingandthuswillleavebehindall behaviorsanddesiresScripturecallssin,suchasgossip,falsehood,stealing, drunkenness,racism,violence,anunforgivingspirit,andsexualimmoralityofalltypes, suchas,byexampleonly,pornography,andanysexualactivitiesoutsideofthe covenantofmarriagebetweenonemanandonewoman,includingpremarital intercourseandadultery.

Godcondemnsallinjusticeandoppression,butespeciallypreyingontheweakormarginalized (Isaiah10:14).God’sgreatlovebroughttheincarnation,anditsexpressiononearth culminatedinthecrossasJesusdiedforoursins.Divineloveflowedfromdivinejustice towardhealinghumaninjusticepreeminentlythroughChrist’sselfsacrifice.God’sholiness, justice,andresurrectionpowerisourhopeforreconciliationwithGodandthefoundationfor ourlifetogetherasthepeopleofGod(Ephesians2:1418). Godcallsustowardacommunityoflove,justice,andrighteousness.Asmembersofthe householdoffaith,wecometogetherinourdifferences wecannotbethefamilyofGod withoutthosewhoaredifferentfromus(Romans12:38).Thisinclusionaryposture, characterizedbyloveinourcommunities,ourdiscipleship,andourmissionisevidenceoflife intheSpiritofGod(1Corinthians12:1227).Additionally,wemustbeajustcommunity one ofequityandrespectasweserveandhonoroneanotherasbetterthanourselves(Philippians Amid2:3).

HaroldLindsellLibraryComputerLab(Charlotte) Computers and printers for student use are available in the Harold Lindsell Library. The computers provide students with access to the Internet, Microsoft programs, and library resources. Students can schedule usage and are encouraged to consult with Library staff for assistance. Students are limited to one-hour of usage if there are others waiting to use the workstations. Students may not connect personal laptop computers to the computers or printers.

GordonConwellTheologicalSeminary 23 password are used to access email, portals, printing and library resources. In most cases, the student username is the student’s first initial plus last name. For example, John Smith’s user ID would be jsmith, and his email address would be jsmith@gordonconwell.edu. If there is more than one user with the same first initial and last name, the system automatically assigns a number at the end of the username (example: jsmith9). TheSeminaryreaffirmsthebiblicalprinciplessetforthinitsCommunityLifeStatementasit seekstosupportstudentsintheirtheologicalendeavors.TheSeminary'scommitmenttoits missionstatementrequiresthatallstudentsbeaffordedanenvironment,whichpromotes intellectualandspiritualgrowth.Tothisend,theSeminarymayengageininvestigations, whichcouldresultinaprocessdesignedtobringaboutrestorationforthestudenttothe community,shouldheorshebefoundinviolationofanyaspectoftheCommunityLife Statementoranyotherinstitutionalcodeofconductthatinterfereswithorlimitsthestudent’s, aswellasthecommunity’s,abilitytofulfilltheiracademicgoals.

ProcedureforConductingaMisconductReview

1. Thecampusspecificguidancecommitteewillconductaninvestigationofthe allegationsbroughtagainstastudent.Theinvestigationincludesthefollowingsteps: a. Confirmthename/identityofthestudentinquestion. b. Gatherallmaterialfacts. c. DetermineallegedinfractionasstatedintheCommunityLifeStatementorother publishedinstitutionalcodeofconduct. d. Ifnecessary,takeanyappropriateactions,includinggovernmentand/orlaw enforcementagencies. e. Seeklegalcounselasdeemedappropriate.
