STUDENT MEDIA spotLIGHT

Crystal Arroyo: Fashion icon and video producer. She majors in communications, has recorded and edited several videos for multiple departments at the college.

Sophie Lowry: Croc lover and graphic designer. She majors in communications and participates in creating graphic designs wherever it’s needed. Not only is she a part of the media program, but she is also a member of the cheer team!

Dalton Janoseok: Multitasker. This guy is responsible for the radio station, and podcast. He focuses on Media, Audio Engineering, and is the Sports Director for GC3 Media. He also takes part in several programs such as Quiz Bowl, Prism, and Choir!

Trina Lucero: Lovable Diva. She brings life to the GC3 Media program and works alongside Crystal and Dalton in video production.

She is passionate about creating videos and hopes to make a career out of it.

Alondra Fuentes: Hardcore fangirl.

A communications major who mainly focuses on writing stories for the GC3 Media website, and co-hosts the podcast along with Dalton and Giselle. She is also takes part in colorguard.

Giselle Martinez: Hardcore fangirl part 2. Also takes part in writing/ editing stories, co-hosts the podcast, has an undying passion for music and is looking into learning graphic design.

Mikkel: International student. He is from Brazil and came to GCCC to study. He often helps the media program with posting advertisments around campus.

Monet: Athlete and quick learner.

She has written stories and learned graphic design. Not only does she take part of the media program she also spends a lot of time playing softball.

Matiyron Easley: Refers to himself as “Peter Parker Daily Bugle”. He does a little bit of everything, he writes, takes pictures, but most of all takes part in graphic design.

Ernesto: Photographer. He has assisted the program by taking photos. He also is apart of SGA, Art Club and Prisim.

Cosmetology Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatments, here at Garden City Community College the Cosmetology program is located at the PENKA Building and is a 9-month program that teaches hands-on salon work and, students are expected to work 1,500 hours to graduate.

The program is currently being taught by Guillermina Hinde and Mia Horn. Current student Alissa Espinosa let us in on what the Cosmetology program is currently learning and some tips for incoming students or any students interested in the Cosmetology program. She also mentioned that current students are going over all of their haircuts again and are also having clients come in on Mondays and Fridays.

Some of the many things she has learned in the program so far have been perms, haircuts, coloring hair, scalp treatments, manicures, and facials. I also asked Espinosa about some of her favorite parts of the program and this is what she had to say, “My favorite part of this program is learning about everything and being able to work on clients to get the hang of working at a salon.” Espinosa also had some very helpful information to anyone interested in the program and anyone who is joining the program, “ If you’re looking to join this program something that students should expect is that you’re going to be there 9 hours a day and you’ll even have some Saturday schools. Something I recommend is always asking for help from the instructors while you can because once you are done with the program you’re on your own so appreciate asking as many questions and getting help from your instructor.”

Cosmetology looks forward to helping students who are interested in branching out in the Cosmetology field.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Whistable, Kent

Here at Garden City Community College there is a vast majority of ethnicities and cultures, not only do we have students from all over the US but all over the world.

Sharing a little bit of themselves we have a few international students here that are involved in athletics and other school activities. We asked students the differences between the US vs their home and to explain some of the most interesting experiences they’ve encountered whilst here.

Felix Mesquita is a student here, from England, not only is he 4675 miles away from home but in a completely different environment. Felix came here to play soccer, he stated “sports in the US are more competitive and taken more seriously.

While I’m sure Kansas is not like Whistable, Kent, Felix has said he’s enjoyed his time here.

Our second hig lighted International Student is Lutz Rubelowski. Lutz is coming up on the end of his freshman year and first football season as a broncbuster. He is from Hamburg, Germany, a little town surrounded by farms. A noticeable difference from America to Germany is the cost of education, Lutz stated, “College in Germany is free…”

Although the cost is different Lutz wanted to come here to study and experience new things. When asked what he liked about Garden, Lutz said he enjoys that there is a lot to do here because Germany is in lockdown right now.

These are just two of our international students, we are glad to have them here pursuing their education.

Coming to a place like Garden City Community College is a great experience for young adults to share experiences in a diverse community. This proves, not only “From Here You Can Go Anywhere”, but, from anywhere you can come here!

Seeing College Through The Eyes Of...

A High School Student

ASIA BRIGGS

I am thinking I will major in either Journalism or Psychology. I do not know that much about financial aid. I wish I knew more about the financial aspects and what all goes into it. I am looking at several different college websites and I have a college visit planned for April. When going into college I’m not sure what to expect.

VIVIAN LARA

I’m planning to major in Graphic Design. There’s so many different jobs I could do, from designing magazine and book covers to websites and apps.

I know that I can apply for FAFSA and get merit based scholarships if I get good grades. I’m looking at the colleges that have sent me mail or emails and seeing if they have what I want to major in and if I’d like to go to any of them. I also want to visit some colleges during the summer.

I remain undecided on which major or career path I plan on pursuing post highschool.

I am expecting a higher level of education experience and I am excited to experience college life. I expect and am excited to meet new types of diverse people. Something I wish I knew more about college would be how to easier attain more scholarships and how colleges evaluate possible students for attendance to their schools.

I am planning on a major in Metallurgical Engineering. I know a decent amount about applying for federal aid. I think for scholarships I know I need to apply to a lot of them, however the money is drying up. Right now I am taking dual credit and studying to prepare for college, I am also getting all the necessary materials ready. I’m expecting a whole new experience along with the opportunity to reinvent myself. I wish I knew more about what to expect from college.

I am going to K-State this fall. I am planning on majoring in Biology, not necessarily because I want to be a biologist, but because it leaves me options in case I change my mind. I know that I have filled out my FAFSA, and probably need to fill out some more scholarships. I be a little shaken up living away from home but I am also expecting to have a fun time.I wish I knew whether COVID 19 would be an issue during my college experience, and I sure hope it isn’t.

I plan on obtaining an English major for writing, also a cosmetology major. I’m aware of the Kansas scholarships but I haven’t seriously looked into them. As well as FASFA. Im not doing much at the moment to prepare for college. I’m just trying to make it through this year with good grades due the pandemic. Overall I wish I knew more, nothing is seriously taught to us as far as I know and we are not taught things that will actually be useful for living alone in college.

GRIFFIN’S Meet Allison Griffin, the head Athletic Trainer for Garden City Community College. “Alli” comes into Garden City in her first season with the Broncbuster Athletic Department. Before coming to Garden City, Alli spent 3 years at Arizona Western College where she worked as an athletic trainer for every team, insurance coordinator, adjunct faculty member, and clinical preceptor.

Alli taught three sports medicine courses while at Western and wrote four new syllabi to allow for more hands-on opportunities for the students. She established a relationship between the local residency program and the sports medicine department. This resulted in Arizona Western becoming a clinical rotation site for the residents and streamlining the physicals process for the athletic department. When asked why she chose to work here at Garden City Community College, she enthusiastically responded it was due to the competitive Jayhawk Conference. She also mentioned how it was a great place to start her career. Although her work day is usually the same routine daily, she enjoys creating relationships with the student athletes and coaches.

“Being an AT is one of the most unique parts of the medical field” she states.

“Everyday is a new day and that is what makes me so passionate with my carrer.”
