Bombing On Wall Street Story By: Rilee Harris

Citizens of lower Manhattan could expect more than rain on Sept. 16. 1920. Instead of soft patters of water drenching their clothing, many would feel the abrasive shrapnel as a bomb detonated just past noon.

On the Southeast corner of Wall and Broad streets stood the headquarters of J.P. Morgan and Co. The company had come out of WWI as the most influential banking company in the world.

As the bells from a nearby church rang, the normal hustle and bustle along the street began. Busy bodies went about their daily tasks seeing nothing out of the ordinary as horses and carriages passed by them. While most of them carried passengers, and other goods, one of them in particular carried something far more lethal. No one paid any attention as the buggy stopped in front of the Assay Office located just across the street of J.P. Morgan and Co. The individual driving the buggy took off down the street in a hurry. As the final bell toll rang in the air a new tone took its place as 100 pounds of dynamite detonated.

Those closest to the buggy either died instantly or were thrown feet away off the ground. The air once filled with the smell of moisture now smelled of ash and smoke. Cries and screams could be heard as the dust settled in the streets revealing the damage. Iron sash weights that had been placed atop the explosive acted as shrapnel. The metal slashed more than just innocent victims of the crime, to this day dents in J.P. Morgan and Co. can still be seen. Streets were now littered with glass and carnage. Even the inside of the building was littered with debris.

The once bustling street came to a screeching halt as hundreds of New York City policemen and Red Cross nurses arrived at the scene. The blast had initially killed thirty people. Later eight people would die from injuries. Despite the 38 deaths, hundreds of others lie wounded.

As investigations began, investigators struggled to figure out who and why. The bank was the obvious target. Many individuals claimed that the bank had gained profits from WWI but most of the victims were stenographs and clerks. J.P. Morgan was out of town when the bomb detonated. There were no leads to suspect anything else except terrorism.

Most of the blame turned to anti-capitalist communists and anarchist groups. These individuals had been blamed for many other bombings, so they seemed like a likely culprit. The fact that flyers had been found

moments before the detonation did not help their innocence either.

The flyers were signed by American Anarchist Fighters who threatened death should the refusal of freeing political prisoners remain intact.

Police also considered the Galleanists whose bombings were very similar to the Wall Street bombing. In particular, the use of iron sash weights resembled that of the Galleanists bombings. Sadly, the flyers were the closest thing that came to find a culprit.

The Bureau of Investigation, which is now known as the FBI, spent years trying to solve the case. However, the trail went cold. In 1944 the case was reopened, but as before, no culprit was arrested. It was concluded that the most likely culprit was a part of an Italian terrorist or Italian Anarchist group though no concrete evidence can prove this.

One day after the explosion, employees returned to work bandaged and beaten. The remain of debris had been thrown away. In hindsight, the debris could have held essential evidence for police. Yet, no one will ever know for sure.

Hard Ball: The Evoluation of Women’s Softball

One afternoon in the old Farragut Boat Club in Chicago, George Hancock invented indoor baseball. Legend says the game started with a broomstick for a bat, a boxing glove for a ball, and 20 men in a gymnasium who had been watching a Yale vs. Harvard football game.

That winter in 1887 it was played throughout other gymnasiums and soon swept through America.

In the spring the game shifted outdoors and was named ‘Indoor-Outdoor Baseball’. It’s popularity spread from Minneapolis and St. Paul, to Denver and Los Angeles. Eventually the game spread over the entire United States.

In 1925, the game was named ‘Kitten Ball’ which was one of the many names the sport went by. Other names such as Indoor Ball, Playground Ball and Diamond Ball were also popular names. Some lesser known names included Pumpkin Ball, Recreation Ball, Twilight Ball, Army Ball, Lightning Ball, Mushball, Big Ball and Night Ball.

Walter Hakanson, a Denver YMCA official and former ASA president and commissioner, suggested the name softball to the International Joint Rules Committee. ‘ In 1934 a tournament at the World’s Fair in Chicago was held where teams from all over America came to play. On opening day,

Ut eum autat aut “The years of persistent effort, constant promotion and unchanging faith of believers in softball proved to have not been in vain, for in 1934 softball came into its own. All over America hundreds of leagues and thousands of players enthusiastically accepted this major team game.” The Playground Association Softball Guide, wrote.

“The promotional activities of the ASA played an important part in stimulating the interest that has been developing for many years. The battle for recognition of this splendid game is over. Softball has won a place among America’s foremost sports.”

It wasn’t until 1943 that the All-American Girls’ Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was founded where 60 women had the opportunity to play professional softball.

After most of the men had gone overseas for World War II. The public needed something to keep their eyes on and what better way than with softball.

One of the most famous AAGPBL teams was the RockFord Peaches. Other teams included Kenosha Comets, The Belles, The Milwaukee Chicks, Daisies, and the Lassie.

Et laturesti blab int. Ga. Ut eum autat auThe Ladies on these teams had to face challenges that being a woman held. The girls on these teams had strict rules they had to live by in order to be a part of the team.

One of their many rules included how the ladies dressed and appeared in public.

If the player’s hair was not shoulder length or in bobs then they would be fined. If the player wore shorts and slacks out in public they would be fined. And if she smoked, drank, or went out into public without makeup she would be fined. The players also had to have a chaperon to enforce these rules and to keep the players in line when out.

The players also had to attend a mandatory charm school. They were required to learn proper etiquette, how to apply makeup, and even how to woo a date. Most of the girls in these teams were athletes who had been raised on farms so they had been knowledgeable about these things.

Finally, the players must wear the uniform they were provided, which was a short skirt. The uniforms were designed by the AAGPL’s founder’s wife. There was no negotiating, and oftentimes players sustained injuries due to the uniform.

The league’s popularity gradually grew and by the end of its second season more than 250,000 fans were attending the games.

The league ended in 1954 with only five teams remaining; Fort Wayne, South Bend, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Rockford. The sport gave over 600 women an opportunity to play professional baseball at a level that had never before been attained.

These women made history and blazed a path that many women today follow. Today more than 3.5 million girls play softball and because of them, women have a chance to play collegiate softball which is offered at ove 1,600 colleges.

harsh guitar riffs, and screaming lyrics all remind people of the stereotypical music genre of rock. No one would dare think that a music genre such as jazz, had a huge impact on shaping rock as we know it today.

Despite its growth in popularity, rock is still a young music genre. Rock originated in the 1940s, but it was heavily influenced by jazz, country, and the blues, all popular music genres back to the 1920s. Jazz has always had an influence in many genres of music even hip-hop. In fact, hip-hop also influenced rock. In many ways, rock artists were influenced by a variety of music genres.

t 1950s, was heavily influenced by classic blues. Also was known as the “father of rock and roll,” Berry developed rhythms from the blues that helped shape the rock and roll music. Future artists like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were heavily influenced

by Berry’s music. His rhythms deriving from the

blues, clever lyrics, and electronic effects on his guitar, broadened the horizons for the music genre. Future artists influenced by Berry soon expanded from single artists to several musicians completing albums of songs.

By the 1970s rock had become a popular form of music. Rock has always been a Ro genre of muge sic inventrW ate ed and rs re-

invented itself. Led Zeppelin gave rock a darker and heavier tone than before. Led Zeppelin helped kick start of new forms of rock known as hard rock or heavy metal. Artists like Pink Floyd help develop the rock genre of punk. Lesser known bands such as Pere Ubu helped shape the rock genre of industrial rock. While not as popular as heavy metal, or punk, industrial rock still influenced later bands and artists.

Though the past few decades had been a growth in popularity for rock, the 1980s seemed to be like a downfall. The music had grown boring and stale without new creative content. However, English bands such as Depeche Mode began demonstrating more introverted styles of writing. This new experimentation lead to the creation of post punk and also influenced American bands such as R.E.M.

to experiment with post punk elements. Bands such as these were dubbed college rock because of their popularity on college radio stations. By the end of the 1980s this form of rock derived so much from the traditional style of rock that it was renamed alternative rock. With Nirvana’s song “Nevermind� released in 1991,

the subgenre alternative rock became a dominant form of popular music. Sadly, alternative rock began to lose popularity after the suicide of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana.

However, despite the sudden drop in popularity, mainstream rock, or alternative rock, rose in popularity once again thinks to Limp Bizkit. Limp Bizkit mixed hard rock with rap creating the hybrid rap-rock. Staind and Puddle of Mudd were influenced by Limp Bizkit. However, they took a different approach and focused on melodic hard rock rather than integrating rap.

By the 21st century most successful acts followed their ancestors from the 1960s. Even though many of these band sounded much different than their predecessors, they still incorporated genres that influenced rock artists in the 1960s. Linkin park incorporates hip hop and metal while 3 Doors Down provides a contemporary spin on hard rock traditions.

Even though rock continues to change, one thing is for sure, it will continue to influence artists and fans for many years to come. Who knows maybe another form of rock will show itself in the near future.

Rewind the clock a century to the year 1920 and life as we know it today was simply part of the imagination. Nowadays, people have the entire world at the tip of their fingers with instant access to the World Wide Web. From ordering food, buying vehicles, setting up appointments, and attending school, the options provided by the internet are limitless.

Not to mention the entertainment it can supply. While the internet can provide just about anything, it is hard not to include

all the different types of technology tha can be found in nearly every home acr the world. From those who are privileg and living in a first-world society to th who are not and living in a third world country, a mobile phone is one piece o technology that is owned almost every where throughout the world. Technolo has crept its way into our hearts and ho as the years have passed regardless of if realized or not. entertainment and news, there are a few places worldwide that don’t contain certain tools of technology that simplify daily tasks. As the years have come to pass media outlets, and technological advancements, have made their way through a long line of history. These technological advancements began with the end of the first World War in 1918. As soldiers began to return home from the rugged World War, they seemed to have a renewed outlook on life. The 1920s were a period of revolutionary development and financial liberation for citizens in the United States.

Coming back from one of the deadliest wars to a prosperous rise in the economy not only gave soldiers a new sense of hope but all Americans as well.

There was now an option to use new forms of credit and disposable income. With the ability to make purchases using credit Americans began to purchase luxury items like radios, automobiles, telephones, phonographs, and household appliances such as vacuums and washing machines. Along with the possibility to make these purchases, Americans began to spend their spare time engaging in leisure activities like attending silent movies and enjoying broadcasted radio events. Media and advertising took this opportunity to steal the spotlight, working together in an unspoken partnership with technology. With a spike in the consumption of consumer goods,

this was the perfect chance for advertising to use broadcast media as well print media to reveal new products and services available to the American people.

Radio used this time to thrive providing its listeners with not only advertisements for new products, and services, but also provided a chance to keep up with political speeches, news updates, and live sports broadcasts. Although print did well in the advertising industry, print advertising did not reach as many individuals compared to broadcasting which took the media by storm. By reaching a larger area of consumers, radio was able to bring American families together as a culture without even intending to do so. During this time, the media brought the citizens of America together by broadcasting live at the same time for the whole nation to hear. It is believed that more than half of all American homes kept a radio as a household essential to stay up to date with current events. As time moved forward, so did technology. Within the 1920s decade,

Franklin D Roosevelt was one of the presidents who used the broadcasting system to reassure the American people during this time of economic crisis.

Over the course of 100 years, there have been more technological advancements than can be named in one setting. As each day passes it has continued to develop and progress. Media platforms have made new strides and have become the way of mass communication among countries around the globe. Living during a time where technology was only a fantasy is hard to fathom. There has been so much progress that in today’s world living without technology is now the fantasy. Technology today shows no signs of slowing down in advancements and will affect generation, old and new, to come.

A long time ago (100 years) women were expected to “Stay in the Kitchen.” Do as they are told, speak when spoken to, and know their place.

What exactly was a women’s place? Before the 1920’s Women’s Suffrage movement, the role of a women in society was to follow the rules of the patriarchy. This meant not being able to wear skirts or shorts three inches above the ankle (if so, there would be a fine), not being able to have an individual passport if married, not being hired elsewhere because they were seen as unfit due to their sex, and most importantly not being able to have the right to vote. Women having the right to vote is the beginning of change in the American society known today. The fight to vote started way before the 1920’s, it can be traced back all the way to the 1820’s.

During this time, before the civil war reform groups such as moral reform societies, temperance groups, anti-slavery organizations women played a key role. Soon women began to break out of the mold of what an ideal women is supposed to behave like. The Seneca Falls Convention that took place in 1848 fueled the understanding that women “were autonomous individuals who deserved their own political identities,” (2019). Although, during the civil war the movement lost drive, after it was picked up again and in 1890 the National American Women’s Suffrage Association was formed. Change started to happen in west around 1910 where states such as Utah and Idaho had given women the right to vote. Again another war (WWI) slowed the movement but only ended up justifying the it because it showed women were just as patriotic as the man. In due time, with a fight that took 100 years to win, the 19th Amendment on August 18,1920 was ratified. Women had the right to vote. As of that day, the change in laws and societal rules for women still continuing changing. In fact, there are important acts passed in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980’s, and all the way to today that have helped shape the society for American Women. Before the 1960’s women were not given equal pay nor could file for divorce, despite the circumstances. In 1963 the Equal Pay Act was formed to prohibit the discrimination of sex in payment of wages by employers engaged in commerce or in the production of good for commerce. Despite this act there is still trouble today with equal pay in the United States for Women, but this act is simply the start on paper that says there should be equal pay for all. Next in the late 60’s attitudes towards divorce began to shift. In the 1920’s divorce would not be accepted if the judge thought it was a solvable problem or simply because it was the fault of both spouses. However, in1969 in California the first “No Fault” Divorce statue was signed into law by Governor Ronald Reagan. Following, all states have done the same. mental Protection agency, title IX provides that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any eduction program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (1972). This made going to school and receiving an education for women much easier as they were situations were power was abused and women would not be able to receive the same opportunities in school that men could. Known as a land mark legal decision, on January 22, 1973 the U.S. supreme court took down a Texas statue banning abortion and made it legal across the United States. According the the court, a women’s right to an abortion was understood in the right to privacy which is protected by the 14th amendment. Abortion was illegal in some states before the case but only if a women’s life was in danger. Due to this reasoning the number of illegal abortions increased and soon an interest in challenging anti-abortion laws took place.

Following this legal decision more than ten years later in 1989 the supreme court affirms the rights of states to deny public funding for abortions and to prohibit public hospitals from performing abortions. This case was taken to the supreme court level, known as the Webster vs Reproductive Health Services. Due to this decision, a women getting an abortion became more difficult and there were protests held against the decision that didn’t sit right with women at all, especially those of low income that relied on public facilities. Subsequently the 90’s brought more change for women of the united states. While the abortion laws seemed to become more limiting as time passed by there was a one specific highlight in the decade that stood out. In 1994, the Violence Against Women Act begins to fund services for victims of rape and domestic violence. This act also allows women to seek civil rights remedies for gender related crimes. This

act was a huge step towards equality for women in the U.S. because this allowed them to get the help they needed when it came to these type of situations especially when the rape culture in America is increasing. However six years later those portions of the law allowing victims of rape, domestic violence, and such to sue their attackers in federal court. Just as it seems the U.S. is progressing when it comes to rights, the country takes a step back. This type of action is also seen 2005 when congress passed the Partial Abortion Act, which was the first law to band a specific abortion procedure (in 2006 the Supreme Court upheld the band). Flash forward a couple years and the fight for equal pay still continues, In 2012 the Paycheck Fairness Act plunders in the senate on a party line vote. This act is supposed to fight gender discrimination in the work place which is still a problem today despite the amount of attention it receives. For now let’s acknowledge and celebrate the wins of the women today. Women do so much more than before, they can vote, run for president, wear skirts of any length without being fined, but most importantly change. Before, there was this mold a women had to stay and fit in. The mold that defined what a women should be. A women should be pious, respectful to the man, and never think of questioning authority.
