SUMMER RECIPES

Magical chocolate bars

Summers are coming and the sun is out and your little food monsters are coming out. This recipe is meant to be for your little children and their ice cream craving tummies!!

Ingredients:

1 pint chocolate ice cream

3 jumbo craft sticks

Instant Chocolate

Hard Shell: 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

⅔ cup coconut oil

D

irections

Line a baking sheet with waxed paper.

Remove the lid from ice cream container. Working quickly, cut the container off the ice cream and turn ice cream on its side on a work surface. Insert craft sticks into the side of the ice cream, evenly spacing them. Cut the ice cream between the sticks, creating 3 bars.

Arrange ice cream bars in the prepared baking sheet; freeze until completely solid, 8 hours to overnight.

Combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwavesafe bowl; heat in microwave in 30-second intervals, mixing well each time, until chocolate hard shell mixture is smooth, 1 to 2 minutes.

Hold 1 ice cream bar over a separate measuring cup and pour chocolate hard shell mixture over bar to cover completely. Let chocolate dry for a few seconds and pour chocolate hard shell mixture over bar again, creating a thick shell. Place bar back in the waxed paper. Repeat with remaining bars and chocolate hard shell mixture.

The greatest thing you will ever eat in the Topeka Kansas area is this little place called Indian Bistro. From their naan to their mango lassi, it is ALL AMAZING! I have yet to be disappointed, whether I’m dining in or taking out, and I’ve been going here nearly every month for three years! Any time we have a celebration or a big holiday coming up, or just because, we are sure to come here. Honestly, it is a bit pricey, but for the quantity you get and the quality of the food, combined with just how tasty it all always is, I’d say it is totally worth it. Most of the people I go with can make a couple meals with it, and I would too if not like a moth to a flame I’m drawn to the food maybe an hour after we get home. But it does make it home, at least! They definitely give you servings that even I can’t put down while dining in, and I love this place to the very soul of my being! I’m always sure to order quite a bit, though. They have plenty of vegetarian-friendly options, along with meaty meals as well. It’s actually pretty cool to learn that a lot of Indian food is naturally vegan and vegetarian. Another thing about this place is that everything is fresh and made to order! So when you order appetizers and/or entrees, wait time will--within reason-- reflect that. The food most definitely as well! Enough with gushing on and on about the overall place, which is excellent, but now onwards to the food! Here is just a small taste of their menu Already, right off the bat, we have two meatless meals! Anything on their menu with a V means it’s vegan. which is very helpful and simplifies the process, especially for those who are new to vegan/vegetarianism or Indian food

On the right we have their chana masala, my go-to item on the menu for the entrees. It is one of their Vmarked items, so it’s a great option for anyone! Though, in all honesty, Indian food is one of the healthier options we have out their They use a great myriad of spices, and they are rich in vegetables and legumes, which offer fiber, vitamins and antioxidants Chana masala certainly does not lack in any of those areas! It is like a chickpea curry bathed in those amazing spices. Sometimes you might even get a pod of the spices in your helping You get a nice amount of rice with all the entree items I’ve ordered so far, so it helps stretch the meal further without losing any of the strong and warm flavor

This is an item I’ve really only recently started ordering maybe the past three times I’ve gone.

This is their paneer tikka masala Paneer, for those who don’t know, is a traditional Indian cheese that doesn’t generally melt in the same way mozzarella or cheddar or other cheeses do. When it is heated, paneers structure is maintained, so it can be grilled, fried, or simmered without liquefying But add it to this creamy and rich masala they’ve made, and you’ve got paneer tikka masala. It’s hard to say one thing is the best over the other with how wonderful their food and menu is executed, but this most certainly would be a contender. It’s creaminess stems from the yogurt-y base, and the cheese builds onto that Another thing about paneer is it is a perfect cheese; it has a subtleness that a lot of other cheeses simply don’t, and I am a cheese connoiseur.

Directly Above:

This is the famed Gobi Manchurian I ve spoken of! The best thing in the world and I’ ve given it a footnote It is a cauliflower that looks like

chicken but is not! Just eat it

and you will see why it is my favorite food doesn’t it just look amazing?

Directly Right and Center: This is butter chicken!

Obviously this is something my dad orders, and he loves it

each times he gets it without fail When they bring it to you

fresh from the kitchen, there is a small bit of butter that melts

rapidly because of the piping food I just think it’s cool they do that instead of letting it melt outside of your sight

“My experience at GVA was amazing! I spent two years in the online program, which gave me the flexibility to work full time and even graduate a semester early. I really appreciated being able to learn at my own pace in a comfortable environment. Next, I plan to earn my Administrative Office Professional certificate.” Belen R

“My GVA experience was great and I was able to focus more , My plan is to get my cosmetology license and then work at a salon ,until I can open my own salon.” Katie B

“I am so thankful for gva they have been such a big help to working with my lifestyle and making sure I graduate on time / my goal is to go to a college that can help me succeed in entertainment such is acting singing or dancing.” Devion B

INTEREST PIQUE

This is a segment where we talk and review things, which could be anything, ranging from video games and shows to music and books, and even pop culture. In this edition, we are going to discuss probably one of my all-time favorite movies.

Edward Scissorhands

That’s right! The story about an

uncommonly gentle man. I absolutely

love this movie and could watch it once

every day The two opposite stars are

Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp Depp

plays Edward Scissorhands, an artificial

man created by a hermit inventor in a

mansion at the end of town

E d w a r d

S c i s s o r h a n d s

One day, a women name Peggy

stumbles into the property and goes

inside, looking for anyone who may live

there. In the attic she finds Edward, who

initially hides and shies away from her.

Peggy, the kind individual she is, asks

him where his parents are.

As Edward approaches her to answer, she

(and the rest of the audience) is shocked to

find that his hands are made entirely of

scissors and blades She is (along with the

audience again) also shocked to find that

his face is covered in accidental self-

induced scars Obviously because when one

has hands, they go to touch their face a lot.

I thought that was a really awesome and

natural touch.

Edward answers that his father, the

inventor, went to “sleep ” and never woke up

That answer reveals how isolated he ’ s been

for years, and the innocence that the

isolation has retained within him. I also

loved that touch once I had time to dissect

it later on

Peggy obviously feels terrible for Edward,

and insists he comes home with her at least

for the time being. He does, and they arrive

at a home in a small town that is designed

like a massive suburb that, to me, evokes

the Disney hit Zombies, with the light,

bubbly, and nearly ignorant atmosphere

She shows him around the house and some

family photos, and he is struck by the

picture of Kim, the daughter of Peggy.

Later on in the movie Kim and Edward

meet, and sadly for Edward, Kim detests

him. She already has a boyfriend as well,

who is rude all around but especially to

Edward. Scissorhands, though, doesn't seem

all too aware of these things and turns to

making magnificent sculptures from bushes

and greenery for a hobby. That then moves

to dog grooming, and finally progresses to

hairdressing. His style is zany and out-there,

but the towns people are utterly in love with it! He becomes a local celebrity for more

than his unique appearance and condition.

I could go on and on about all the little

details in this movie that make my heart

flutter, but I will stop. Kim slowly realizes

maybe there is more to Edward than she

thought. But will she really give him a

chance? Will she realize her boyfriend is

really just a snobbish rich kid who uses

others for his own gain? Will he use Edward

too? Do the towns people truly welcome

Edward, or will they be convinced he is

something much more sinister than an

uncommonly gentle man? This is a story all

about how appearances can be painfully

misleading.

IN REVIEW…

I love this movie so much! As of now, it's probably my favorite. It's funny to think about how many Tim Burton movies have actually been a part of my childhood. Nightmare Before Chirstmas, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the whole shebang! But perhaps nothing is quite as palette cleansing than Edward Scissorhands if you're an avid fan of his movies. Most have gross gag elements or spooky elements Quite a few are or utilize claymation. (Edward does have a bit of a macabre or grim design, however )

But this one doesn’t. This movie is great any time of the year, though it is set around Christmas time. You wouldn’t know it with how bright and green the scenery is until is becomes part of the plot. Honestly though, if you haven’t watched this movie what are you waiting for? There’s something great and relatable about a character who is tragically misunderstood This movie gets a 1,000/10 from me.
