Welcome to your latest edition of the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice newsletter - keeping you up to date with hospice news, and showing you how your support makes a difference to the lives of people in our community every day.

Hospice care is special; and can often be surprising in its breadth and reach. We wanted to share some amazing stories that show how Hospice care has touched our patients and their families in the most unexpected ways.

In this newsletter you’ll meet Raj who has made the most incredible journey with his illness. With the support of our rehab team he has built strength and resistance to help him live with advanced Parkinsons.

Rehabilitation isn’t something that many people associate with Hospice care but at the Hospice and in the community, it forms a huge part of what we do to help people to live well with their illness for as long as possible.

Hospice care is truly special and that is thanks to people who support our work through donations, volunteering, visiting our shops and gifts in wills.

‘I’M TOO BUSY TO STAY Raj was diagnosed with advanced Parkinson’s disease in 2012 whilst serving as a councillor in Greenwich. Last year he spent almost six months in a hospital bed and his specialist consultant had every expectation that’s where Raj would spend his final days.

But Raj had other ideas. He was due to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary and had his daughter’s wedding to look forward to. He wasn’t going to miss either of them, telling his consultant “I’m too busy to stay in bed.”

He’d been in bed for so long, but had so much determination to return home to his family. When he left hospital, he had a whole team of people waiting for him.

The Hospice’s team of community carers were able to support Raj in the first few weeks of being home. Raj’s son, Shaun said “they always had a smile on their face, and offered practical advice and reassurance for all the family.”

The carers visited three times a day to help Raj and his family re-adjust to life at home, helping with medical and personal care. They were also visited by Chengetai, a specialist palliative nurse from the Hospice. “It was then I realised how different Hospice care was going to be.

Limitations had been set for dad in hospital.” Chengetai simply said, “if he wants to do it, he can. It was so refreshing to have someone finally listening to what dad wanted. She also stopped to ask me how I was. She was there for us all, not just dad.”

‘Raj has made the most incredible progress, and last year built up the strength to stand and walk, aided by Physiotherapist, Amy’ “She was able to make lots of great suggestions and arranged for an Occupational Therapist to visit who ensured that dad had all the equipment he needed to live at home.”

Having used our Day Hospice for some years, Raj was familiar with the Hospice, but it was accessing rehabilitation in our

IN BED’ purpose built gym that made the most visible difference. During his lengthy stay in hospital, Raj lost the use of all of his muscles and relied completely on his wheelchair for mobility. He has made the most incredible progress, and last year he built up the strength to stand and walk aided

by Physiotherapist, Amy. This was such an achievement for Raj and his family who have been with him every step of the way.

Twelve months after his remarkable discharge from hospital, Raj’s family put on a special thank you tea at the Hospice so that staff and volunteers involved in his care could celebrate with them. The Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Mick Hayes, who Raj knows through their shared years at the council also attended. The Hospice is also the Mayor’s ‘charity of the year’.

Raj’s son, Shaun, shared some beautiful words about his dad and what the Hospice has meant to the family.

“When dad was first referred to the Hospice, none of us really knew what it meant. Having been such an active person his whole life, visiting the Day Hospice gave him an opportunity to meet new people and offered some respite. There was always so much going on; entertainment, therapies, animal visits!

Dad continues to have care from the Hospice, mainly through his attendance at the gym for regular physio sessions which really improve his strength and wellbeing.

Raj is such an inspiration to all of us.

BUILDING FUTURES, ONE STEP AT A TIME… For our rehabilitation team, and the people they support, it’s often the small things that make the biggest difference. Here, Amy talks us through a typical day in her role as Physiotherapist at the Hospice.  8.30am: Arrive at the Hospice and check through emails, look through new referrals and make a plan for the day.  9.30am: Once a week, I attend a Multidisciplinary meeting with colleagues to discuss the care of patients with more complex needs. It offers a really helpful perspective from different professionals including nurses, doctors, physiotherapist (me!), social worker; today we all put our heads together to come up with a plan for a patient’s care.  10.30am: Meet a patient and their carer in the gym for a 1:1 physiotherapy session.

This person is struggling with balance at the moment so we will do some work to improve core strength.

 11.15am: I lead a daily tai chi class at the Day Hospice which everyone can take part in regardless of ability. Some people will take part standing, some will stay seated and others will just enjoy the calming music and some quiet time.  12pm: Patients enjoy lunch at this time so I grab a quick drink and a sandwich too.  12.30pm: A number of Day Hospice patients come in to the gym; I really encourage group activity, not only does it mean that I can support more patients at any one time, but it also encourages some healthy competition and people often push themselves harder than they would on their own.  1.30pm: A lady staying in the inpatient unit is having some problems with breathlessness so I meet her to work through some postures and breathing techniques. Sometimes it’s the simplest techniques that can make the biggest difference.  2pm: The rest of the afternoon is spent meeting two new outpatients, who are receiving care at home. They come in to the gym to build strength, improve movement and mobility, to give them the best possible quality of life.  4pm: Update patient records following today’s activities. That means that any of my colleagues involved in a patients care will be able to see them and will be well informed about their progress. I met a new patient today who is struggling to get out of bed so I refer her to Nina, the Hospice’s Occupational Therapist who will visit her at home to assess her equipment needs.  5pm: Check appointments booked in for tomorrow, sign off and head home.

PATIENTS’ FORUM WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD AND HELP SHAPE HOSPICE CARE?

POP IN FOR AC PPA Hospice care is so much more than medicine, it’s an approach that cares for all aspects of a person’s life.

Our Community Café is run by a team of dedicated volunteers, who provide tea, coffee and a warm welcome to people who want to meet others, who may have been through some similar experiences to themselves. The café is open to everyone: some people are bereaved and others may simply want to find out more about what we do at the Hospice.

There is no need to be referred to the café, you can pop along any Friday at 10am for a drink and a slice of cake!

It’s a friendly group and the volunteers are currently planning a few days out throughout 2020 – so why not pop along to meet us, or spread the word if you think it could help someone else.

The Patients’ Forum is a group of people accessing Hospice services who meet to talk about their experience with the Hospice and help us to improve by focussing on what matters to them.

One of the biggest issues highlighted so far is that once people are referred to the Hospice, they feel well looked after, but that they are not always referred as soon as they could have been. We have been sharing stories so that we can design some posters for GP waiting rooms and for hospital teams across Greenwich and Bexley. We will also be putting together some videos that we can share with healthcare teams, encouraging them to get in touch with the Hospice and to tell people about the support we can offer.

The forum meets every 2 months.

REACHING OUT Each year we look after many patients but there are many more people in our community that face living with terminal illness alone. Sue, who has recently joined our Hospice as Community Development Officer, will be working with community groups throughout Greenwich and Bexley to share messages about the

Hospice and to help people understand the support we can offer. If you are part of any groups who might like to hear about the Hospice, or have any contacts with community or faith groups, then Sue would love to hear from you – her email address is suecumming@gbch.org.uk Help us reach every single person that needs us.

The fabulous Priory Players raised a fantastic £547 from a raffle and donations at this year’s panto, Cinderella! Well done everyone, thank you so much!

BUSINESS SUPPORT Thank you to Morrisons who through their charitable foundation has agreed to fund a brand new bathroom for our patients. Fitted with a luxury spa bath, the bathroom will help aid relaxation and pain relief to those staying at the Hospice. Thank you, Morrisons!

PREPARING YOUNG PEOPLE FOR A FUTURE IN HEALTHCARE In September last year we launched a practical education course aimed at getting young people, aged 17 -24, into the Hospice and careers in healthcare. We recently celebrated the achievements of our first cohort.

olunteers Manager, Rahima says: “This course has been an amazing success on so many levels. It has helped young people develop life-long skills that they will take with them on their journey. Many of them will now take up places at university and have more of an idea about what a career in healthcare could look like for them.

The young people were buddied with experienced staff and volunteers who have helped them develop knowledge,

BOBBY AND JIMMY MCGUANE – PUSHING BEYOND BOUNDARIES

‘Taking on your ultimate challenge, tackling your fears, gives you a new outlook on life’

“Our Aunt Ber was just lovely, she was always there for everyone. When she was diagnosed with bowel cancer, we were all devastated.

W

hen the time came for her to need Hospice care, we didn’t expect it to be as it was. Ber was only 49 and we fully expected a Hospice to be full of old people. That wasn’t the case at all. It was so full of life and the team just couldn’t do enough for us. We were welcomed 24-7 and often there was a whole group of us in her room at once.

No-one seemed to mind. It’s been 10 years since she died and we all miss her terribly but our memories of her time at the Hospice are good ones.” Bobby McGuane.

In 2014 Bobby took some time out and wanted to get away so he used it as an opportunity to do something positive in his aunt’s memory. He packed a small bag and a tent and off he went, travelling from John O’Groats to Land’s End on his own two feet to raise money for the Hospice.

We were inspired back then by Bobby’s bravery and sense of adventure.

Since then, Bobby has encouraged others to challenge themselves and has helped raise tens of thousands of pounds by leading challenge events for the Hospice. He’s led groups to the summit of

Snowdon and Ben Nevis and a bootcamp retreat. Bobby’s spirit and determination really inspire others and we often hear how life-changing challenges like this are to the people that do them.

This year Bobby will lead two treks for us; one walking Hadrian’s Wall and the other, a 24km Trek in the Breacon Beacons famed by the Military as the Fan Dance – a gruelling challenge that puts even the SAS through their paces. Want to join him?

“We all think we know our own limits, but we don’t until we test them! Taking on your ultimate challenge, tackling your fears, gives you a new outlook on life. If you want it, you’ll do it!”

Testing that theory this year is Jimmy, Bobby’s older brother who is running the London Marathon in aid of the Hospice.

And he isn’t a runner! “Yes, the training is hard but I can’t wait for the actual day; it’s my way of showing gratitude for all the care my aunt received”.

RUNNING 2.62 MILES IN MEMORY OF ‘NANNY GILL’ When Gill was receiving Hospice care at home in 2018, she mentioned to her nurse, Anne, that she’d love a day out at the seaside with her family but that her illness meant that she could no longer do it as she couldn’t travel by car.

A

nne pulled out all the stops and got to work making arrangements, pulling in favours everywhere she could. The wonderful team at SELKent Ambulance Service took Gill to Whitstable and made sure that she had everything she needed to enjoy her day by the seaside. She even managed some traditional fish and chips!

Gill and her family had a most wonderful day, all together, making memories that they will cherish for a life-time.

Last year, Gill’s grandchildren Zachary, Dolcie and Lillia took part in our Mini Marathon, raising money and running

an incredible 2.62 miles in their nanny’s memory.

They were all fantastic and raised over £1,000 towards our work meaning that we can be here for more people who need our care.

“We loved running the Mini Marathon even though Dolcie found it a challenge we all managed to finish it. We kept thinking about who we were raising the money for and it gave us the push we needed. The day was so much fun and we all loved the fact that we got a medal at the end which we all took into school to show in assembly. We cannot wait to run again this year!

This year’s Mini Marathon was due to take place on Sunday 3rd May. However it will now be a Virtual Mini Marathon that families can do together whilst staying at home. You can run, walk or jog the equivalent of 2.62 miles around your home or garden .This is a fun activity for all the family to get involved in during these difficult times. It’s also a great way to stay fit, get active and get the kids off that tech!

There will be medals and certificates for everyone who signs up.

VOLUNTEERS ARE AT THE HEART OF HOSPICE CARE Volunteers are the backbone of what we do. Over 500 people give their time and skills unpaid to help our care go further.

Without them, our care simply wouldn’t be possible.

MEET VOLUNTEER, UZO

To us, your time is priceless. We recently held a thank you event for all our amazing volunteers to celebrate all that they bring to the Hospice.

We have many different roles available so whether you can volunteer for a few hours or commit to a regular day or evening, as part of our team you’ll play a crucial part in keeping your local hospice going and supporting people with terminal illnesses.

Between jobs and looking for something worthwhile to do with his time, Uzo started volunteering at Repurpose, a centre set up in partnership between the Hospice, Veolia Waste Management and the Royal Borough of Greenwich, aimed at diverting useable goods from landfill.

Uzo refurbished some fantastic items including bikes destined for the scrap heap and a lamp - which he couldn’t resist buying and now takes pride of place at home!

Having studied forensic computing, Uzo decided to move into the Hospice IT team where he is able to put his skills to great use. “Everyone at the Hospice is so welcoming, I felt at home instantly. There is high energy that bounces off everyone. Volunteering at the Hospice has helped alleviate my own personal stress and I look forward to coming in.

Hopefully it will help me move in to paid employment but for now, I’m enjoying every minute.”

Our Hospice shops have always offered people the chance to pick up some great bargains or find unique treasure – from clothing and bric-a-brac to furniture and white goods.

And we are delighted to see more and more people choosing to look for the pre-loved items. You are not only helping our planet but also help us grow income from our charity shops, funding more care for people in our community.

Did you know…

Donating high quality items to your local Hospice shop helps prolong their life-span and save them from landfill.

Last year, with your help we diverted 163 tonnes away from landfill.

You can drop off your pre loved items, to one of our shops 7 days a week.

We offer a furniture collection service please call 020 8856 1289 if you would like to donate high quality items.

We are always delighted to welcome new people joining our fantastic group of volunteers.

You can Gift Aid your donated items meaning that when we sell them, the tax-man will give us an additional 25p for every £1 we raise (and it won’t cost you – or us - a penny!)

Every penny you spend in our shops helps support the work of the Hospice and means that we can care for more people across Greenwich and Bexley.

Last year the money raised through our shops allowed our nurses to provide care to 433 patients at the Hospice and in the local community.
