The last few months have been something none of us could have ever imagined or planned for. The intensity of dealing with a global pandemic has been something that has challenged us all.

Throughout it all, the thing that has stuck with me has been how people have come together to support each other. And that’s what I wanted to share with you in this newsletter.

Our teams have worked tirelessly throughout the last six months – and they’re still going.

From our fantastic team of carers and nurses visiting people at home to our amazing housekeepers working so hard to keep the place spick and span and to the wonderful team caring for our patients donned in PPE throughout their shift.

Our Hospice exists to care for people when they need us most, and even Coronavirus couldn’t stop that from happening. Because of our team, thousands of families have been supported at the most difficult of times. They have been heroes throughout and I want to recognise every single member of staff and volunteers for going above and beyond, even when the odds were against us.

Emergency Appeal has raised £413,641

and still raising every day!

T

hank you so much to everyone who has so generously given. Over the last six months we’ve had to cancel fundraising events, close our shops for over 12 weeks and our supporters in the community have not been able to organise their social fundraising activities. That could have led to a huge drop in income that may have meant we could not have kept our Hospice services running.

Our supporters have stepped up and made sure that isn’t the case.

Your generosity and solidarity have also meant we could face the challenges the pandemic threw at us. Thanks to your support we’ve been able to reach many isolated people in the height of the lockdown. Our Compassionate Neighbours created more stable new friendships and made sure hospice patients were still able to get support. Thanks to you, our nurses

had much-needed PPE. We were able to open a new bereavement phone-line, working together with other organisations to support and signpost those who lost someone. Thanks to you we could make grants to families of patients whose financial circumstances changed and needed to put food on the table.

Thank you also to everyone who made generous gifts in kind. From additional PPE, to gifts for our nurses. The chocolate that has kept our office teams fuelled and gorgeous flowers for patients who could not go outside. Every gift has been lovingly received and distributed and we can’t thank you enough.

Our appeal is still open. As we approach the winter months, we have to be prepared for what may happen next – because Coronavirus is not beaten yet. Your support will mean that no matter what, we can keep providing very special end of life care and support to families.

“We’re good mates, aren’t we, me and you!”

Lynsey and Joan were brought together because of Coronavirus. Lynsey’s time volunteering with Joan has blossomed into a beautiful friendship. Their story highlights the power of human connection – something we’ve all learnt to appreciate all the more this year.

From furlough to all stations go; Lynsey, meet Joan

The extra mile for a smile: going above and beyond in the name of kindness

hen Lynsey was furloughed, she wanted to put her time to good use. Lynsey was teamed up with Joan, who, before Covid, attended the Day Hospice. Joan lives independently at home but was due to receive a new hospital-style bed. She didn’t have a duvet or sheets for a single bed and so Lynsey was assigned to pick up and deliver the all-essential bedding. But Lynsey was motivated to do this and so much more, and the madeup bed was to become the first square in a whole patchwork of good deeds.

At 84, Joan, who has cancer, had been shielding at home.

When the Hospice asked whether Lynsey might also be able to collect some shopping for Joan and leave it on her doorstep, Lynsey was happy to and quickly noticed there might be a need to offer more. “The first thing I realised was how isolated Joan felt, as she doesn’t have anyone local to help… I wasn’t sure how well she was going to cope during lockdown.” Joan had been very independent beforehand, doing her own shopping, visiting the Day Hospice, and joining in social activities. Keen to tackle the challenge together – Lynsey raised the issue with sincerity and transparency: “We had to have an honest talk, about whether Joan was happy to risk me coming into her flat – and she was.

That, to me, demonstrated that it wasn’t really about the shopping; it was about having a chat with somebody and having that human contact that I think she really missed”.

It was an important decision that meant Lynsey could support Joan in a host of ways beyond dropping off groceries. Making

twice weekly visits to Joan.

“It’s the little things - I forget how much is done online now,” Lynsey says. “Joan is very house-proud – she does her housework every day. This puts a lot of strain on her feet. I try to help out with some heavy lifting. Little things that will make her life a bit easier.”

Whilst kindness and compassion are at the heart of Lynsey’s efforts to assist Joan, so is sensitivity to Joan’s needs and the ability to follow Joan’s lead: “After I’ve made us lunch, Joan always insists on doing the washing up because she doesn’t want to be waited on hand and foot. She wants to stay independent and not be treated like a baby.”

As well as the everyday tasks Lynsey helped Joan to celebrate a Lockdown birthday too, by rustling up her favourite cottage pie for her birthday meal, and organising friends to send birthday cards for Joan’s special day.

Tea and a natter… about issues that matter Having a friend has been a huge comfort to Joan during the coronavirus pandemic. Lynsey shared that “Joan used to say, ‘What if I can never go

out again?’ The fear of not knowing the future anyway, and then having this added to it… She used to get quite upset.” Looking to the future is something Lynsey has chosen not to shy away from with Joan. “We’ve had good conversations about Joan’s end of life wishes where I feel she hasn’t really had the confidence to talk to people about that before. We’ve had good conversations over a cup of tea about that – about knowing what her options are.”

In it together: combating the crisis through friendship & feistiness Be it heartfelt discussions over some of those big, important questions, or a chit-chat and a giggle over the silly side of life – Lynsey describes Joan as funny, feisty, honest and “a real southeast London girl” who “doesn’t mince her words”. Their blossoming friendship has been a lifeline for them both.

Lynsey reflects: “I do really care about her… and in some ways Joan has got me through the pandemic as well. I live alone so it’s really helped my mental health. One of the things I know I like doing is helping people. Volunteering with Joan has given me a sense of purpose throughout all this.”

HOW GLYN IS CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY

It was by chance that Glyn became a social worker at Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, but it’s a role she loves and wouldn’t change for the world. This is Glyn’s story.

A

fter more than 20 years as a local authority social worker in the northeast of England, Glyn and her husband decided to up sticks from Hartlepool and make a new home down south – and she hasn’t looked back.

“There’s something about being able to sit and talk openly – and to help people talk openly – to prepare for death and after death for those who are left behind, including those who have children. You see the best and the worst of everything in my job.”

“I ended up as a social worker for the Hospice by fluke really,” she said. “Quite a way into my journey as a practitioner, I felt really drawn towards palliative and end of life care. It’s social work like no other. It’s such a wonderful way of working and an honour to work here. I’ve always felt that social work is an honourable job because you enter people’s lives when they’re in crisis.”

Having lost her father to cancer, Glyn believes her own life experiences have helped set her up for the role she does today.

“Even though the experience is different, you understand that numbness and ‘rabbit caught in the headlights’ look people can have when they’re in shock.”

A listening ear From dealing with financial issues and benefits for patients to advanced care planning, no two days are the same for Glyn.

“Every single day is different,” she said. “It’s simply the best job in the world.”

It’s the little things Glyn helps to make memory boxes for the families of patients and has now started to create sentimental cards called ‘lipstick kisses’. She explained: “We cut pieces of card that patients can put kisses on using lipstick and write a little message. We laminate them and give them back.

“They seem like little things, but they’re actually quite big for those left behind.”

But caring for our community is just one of Glyn’s strengths. She’s also a talented singer, joining a number of the Hospice team in a virtual singalong every Friday afternoon. “So far, we’ve massacred Reach by Steps, but we didn’t do too badly with Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive,” she laughed.

“It’s a little like the Thursday clap for Heroes – we sing to raise our spirits and to say well done for everything everyone has been doing that week. At the moment we’re not able to support each other with a hug, so it’s a sing song instead.”

Adapting our care The Coronavirus pandemic has changed the way Glyn and her colleagues work. While day hospice has been temporarily halted, Glyn’s counselling team is ringing patients to offer support. “We’re listening and reassuring them,” she said.

“We are still caring for patients and their families. It isn’t the way we would normally do it, but we are still a 24/7 service.”

Glyn also made sure patients and families that needed it were given small amounts of money through our Covid Response Grant – something made possible by our generous donors. “It means a family could put food on the table and pay for their prescriptions if their financial situation had changed. Worrying about how to pay for prescriptions is the last thing someone needs to think about.”

Living a good life and having a good death “Our ethos is to help people to keep living until they die. It’s to help people have a good death – and we’re still trying to do that as much as we humanly can.”

And she believes this is thanks to the people she works with. “I am so amazed and in awe of them every day. They are so human and holistic, our doctors, nurses, volunteers, housekeepers and our patients. I get as much from our patients as they get from our services. I’m just fascinated at how people can be so stoic during times of hardship.”

During lockdown, Glyn has put together comfort boxes of basic food and toiletry supplies along with a few goodies and delivered them to patients in the community. “It may be a small thing, but it’s a massive thing for somebody who’s undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy and it’s not safe for them to go out,” she said.

“Early on in lockdown, Oddbox donated 50 boxes of fresh fruit and veg and that made such a difference to ensure people could still eat well.”

ON THE WARDS DURING LOCKDOWN Dealing with illness in a hospital without a loved one by your side has been one of the most trying and heart-breaking results of restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

Both for the patient and for their families.

N

atalie is a nurse specialist who leads the palliative care team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Providing specialist care for patients who are at the end of life, Natalie and her team have never been more needed.

Earlier this year, a patient who had been supported by our community palliative care team was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with acute deterioration.

The family were understandably anxious, fearful that when they left A&E that may be the last time they saw her. Natalie was there to do everything she could to support the family.

Thanks to donations to our emergency appeal, Natalie was able to buy an iPad and use it to connect the lady’s husband and family so they could talk by video chat.

ne lady the Hospice was caring for became very ill at home and was urgently taken to hospital. Sadly, her health suddenly deteriorated but because the hospital was in full lockdown, she could not have any visitors. She was alone without any family, and most tragically – without her husband.

Our Hospice consultant, Brendan, worked closely with the hospital doctors so that she could be moved to the Hospice. At the Hospice, her husband could be with her.

This meant she could hold her husband’s hand. They could tell one another how much they loved each other, and make precious memories in their final days together. Most importantly they were able to say goodbye.

and wife had not been apart in over 50 years. Watching them talk using the iPad and be reassured that her health was slowly improving was a very heartwarming moment.”

In the Hospice, we’re able to do things a little differently. We made sure that all patients would still be able to have one visitor, and have done everything we can to make sure they can stay in contact with their loved ones in other ways.

A

lthough restrictions are now easing across the country, Coronavirus is not beaten yet. Our nurses and

wider team are still wearing full PPE, and our housekeeping staff work relentlessly to keep the Hospice sanitised and safe.

As we write, we’ve just had the hottest week since records began, with temperatures over 30 degrees for seven long relentless days. We wanted to share this photo of a few of our heroic nurses just part way through a 12 hour shift in full PPE which keeps them and our patients safe.

Thank you to our amazing teams for everything they have done and are continuing to do throughout this pandemic to care for our community.

SUPPORTER STORIES Over the last few months, the restrictions and lockdown have meant many of our supporters who organise fundraising events for us have had to be very creative. We’re so delighted to see that our supporters have found so many amazing ways to keep raising money for our Hospice.

M

ichelle Collins is a very special supporter. Originally from Plumstead and now living in Blackheath, she holds a coffee morning every year in memory of her beautiful mum, Carole Muckle, who sadly died at the Hospice in July 2012.

Every year, to remember her mum, Michelle fundraises for the Hospice by inviting friends and family to join her in the garden for coffee, home-made cakes, and mum’s favourite toasted sandwiches. “That’s one of my fondest memories of mum. When we went on holiday we’d come in off the beach and have a cuppa and a cheese and ham toastie. We always have sunshine on the day of our coffee morning. Must be mum looking down on us and making it sunny.”

This year of course a large gathering wasn’t going to be possible but Michelle’s clever friend had the excellent idea of a delivery service and “Carole’s Deliveroo” was born!

Michelle told us “I baked for 3 weeks, neglecting the housework and my family. I was exhausted and going to bed at 2am

and then up again at 6am. The orders just went a bit crazy! I wanted to do another of mum’s favourites as we couldn’t do cheese and ham toasties. She loved afternoon tea so we offered ‘afternoon tea in a box’ which was really popular. One of mum’s friends organised her social group to all have afternoon tea and I actually ran out so had to pop to the shops to get some.”

“On the day my husband and sons were out all day delivering and I kept baking – covered head to toe in flour.

Last year Michelle’s coffee morning raised £1,300. But this year, with her ingenuity and tons of hard work, Michelle raised a phenomenal £2,032.26! Thank you so much Michelle. We know your mum would be so proud of you!

R

utt Austin raised an amazing £1,000 from her community booksale in Bexleyheath.

Rutt had a big clear out of her books during lockdown.

Normally she would have donated them to the Hospice shop, but as they were closed, she set up a small book stall outside her home.

Starting with a modest target of £100, which she updated in her window regularly, her small stall soon grew in popularity. As others in the community also donated their books for sale, before she knew it, she raised £1,000!

“It’s been lovely bringing people closer together, it meant people spoke and laughed together in the streets, it gave elderly residents an opportunity to speak with someone and have a cuppa and biscuit together.”

The Danson Runners was founded by John Green. John has a close connection with the Hospice after we cared for his mum and during lockdown wanted to support us.

The Danson Runners held a number of virtual running events, keeping everyone fit and healthy and raising an amazing £10,000! What legends!

ur annual Open Gardens festival was brought to you virtually this year. All of our kind hosts filmed a video tour of their garden which can be viewed online. Although not quite the same as stopping to smell the flowers in person our generous supporters donated over £10,000 from their virtual visits. And then in August, as the guidance changed, a small number of gardens were able to open in a safe and socially distanced way, raising another £5,000!

REOPENING OUR CHARITY SHOPS  One of the most noticeable things that happened during lockdown was shops closing. Charity shops were no different, and our 17 shops across Greenwich and Bexley all had to close their doors for over four months. given us an opportunity to step back and think about how we can make our shops even better. Most of the time we’re so busy sorting and selling donations, we don’t have a chance to look at the bigger picture.”

andy and Jane, our Area Retail Managers share how they kept going during one of the most trying times charity retail has ever faced.

“It’s been chaotic!” shared Jane. “Although in a really rewarding way. At first the government guidelines were disconcerting.

And needing to furlough our managers and step down our volunteers was a sad experience. The Hospice has been great at staying in touch with the team and keeping spirits up. What’s been interesting is this has

Online sales helped us keep going when our customers couldn’t visit us.”

When the announcement came in June that shops could reopen, the retail staff jumped into action. Mandy and Jane gave their managers time to get their shops in order before opening to the public.

And every single member of the shop team stepped up to the challenge with enthusiasm and focus to raise as much as possible for our Hospice.

Our shops re-opening also meant that all of our wonderful supporters and donors

‘I’m creative, and have an eye for quirky items, or ones that will sell well’

O

ne volunteer who answered the call to arms was Lauren Docampo, who saw a post on the Welling Facebook Group. Lauren is a crafter, making personalised gifts such as felt pillows and garlands, but during lockdown her business was a lot quieter, and she wanted to give her time to a good cause.

She quickly found she had a talent for sorting, and she volunteers three days a week in the warehouse organising pre-loved donations and searching for treasure. “I’m creative, and have an eye for quirky items, or ones that will sell well. I can spot Cath Kidston a mile off, along with other vintage or designer brands. I like finding the unique items – things that will catch your eye on the shelf. I’ve also got a good eye for jewellery,

finding items that have hallmarks or are solid gold. I recently found two beautiful necklaces, one white gold and one 24k and they sold on eBay for £46 each!”

To keep everyone safe, all our volunteers wear gloves and facemasks whilst working.

“Chicken and potatoes and all the trimmings – would you like some?”

Our volunteers generously give their time to support patients. With lockdown and shielding, creativity was needed to keep this support going. Luckily our volunteers stepped up to the task and have done amazing things during lockdown.

Diana and Bill Diana is a Compassionate Neighbour. She is partnered with Bill who she visits on a weekly basis for a chat and to help with small tasks.

Due to Coronavirus, she wasn’t able to visit Bill. He quickly became isolated as he found phone conversations really hard. Diana had to find another way to keep up their weekly chats.

Once a week, Diana stands in Bill’s drive, whilst he stands in the porch. Being careful to keep even more than the recommended 2 metre distance, they can easily chat for over an hour. “I couldn’t imagine not going to visit him once a week” says Diana.

One Sunday when Diana was cooking her first roast in over 6 months due to the lockdown - she called Bill to see if he’d like a portion. “I’m making a roast this weekend. chicken and potatoes and all the trimmings – would you like some?”

He was so touched and told Diana that he often eats the same frozen meals every day, and couldn’t even taste them anymore. He quietly said “I haven’t had a roast in 15 years since my wife died.”

Diana took Bill the largest portion she could carry – enough for two days. She included an apple pie too! The next day she called Bill to see if he’d enjoyed it. “It was a lot of food but I ate it all. I didn’t want to waste any.”

If it was our first roast dinner in 15 years, we’d want a double portion too!

Stacie’s story “I normally have a hectic schedule with family, work and running a girls’ football team. When Covid-19 hit, everything changed. In lockdown, I was only working on a Tuesday and really missing my routine.

With my sudden free time, volunteering was a way of giving something back and a friend suggested getting in touch with the Hospice.

Initially I was asked to offer phone support – checking in with people who would have attended the Day Hospice. For some, it’s been an extremely lonely time. Just being able to have a chat makes a big difference.

I’ve since gone on to a bit of a tech support role. I’ve talked people through setting up their iPads, shown them how to FaceTime and Zoom call. Technology has helped me stay in touch with family and friends so it’s nice to open up that possibility for people who may have struggled or may not have had the confidence to use it.

It’s been a very positive experience. When life goes back to normal, I would like to continue volunteering in some way.”

CAROL CONCERT Our Carol Concert will leave you and your loved ones DEC feeling Christmas cheer and goodwill to all! (Depending on government guidance our Carol Concert will be limited numbers with livestream tickets also available).

VIRTUAL LONDON MARATHON The London Marathon organisers OCT have turned the event into a Virtual one, 40,000 people will take to the streets to run the 26.2 miles over 24 hours, we have a Hospice team of 20 runners taking part in this amazing event!

VIRTUAL SANTA DASH Be part of something amazing this Christmas DEC by joining our Virtual Santa Dash and make Christmas memories that will last a life-time. Registration fee includes a special Santa Dash t-shirt.

TREK FOR OUR CARE We are going outdoors for 3 local treks, you OCT can join us to progress your fitness and challenge yourself, either take on all 3, or just choose one, you decide, 12.5 miles, 17.5 miles and 25 miles - become the ultimate warrior. All government guidelines will be adhered to.

IT’S CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY Calling all local individuals, DEC organisations, businesses and schools to don a jumper and raise funds for your local Hospice.

SANTA’S GROTTO Visit Santa in his socially distanced Greenwich Market Grotto and make this Christmas magical. Santa and his helpers will be following all the social distancing rules so all Grotto visits must be pre booked in advance. We are also introducing a personalised video call with Santa this year.
