Santam’s most common claims during load shedding are related to power surges, damage to fridge contents, and possible burglary claims.”

Most of us will need to seek energy alternatives, so it’s imperative to do so smartly and responsibly. It’s critical to install and maintain them properly. A reputable insurer like Santam can help with both risk management and mitigation,” he said.

Page 6 S outh Africa’s largest short-term insurer Santam has urged households to look for alternatives as a way of dealing with load shedding – including a possible shift to gas appliances.

Ramalingam provides the following further advice for homeowners regarding gas safety: Gas equipment/systems must be installed in accordance with SABS’s (South African Bureau of Standards) requirements When(SANS087).aproperty where a gas appliance is installed is sold, a certificate of conformity must be obtained for the gas system, and it must be provided to the purchaser. Only gas bottles containing less than 19kg of gas may be stored inside a building.

“Unfortunately, load shedding is a reality that’s here to stay.

Citing Eskom’s latest load shedding forecasts, the group noted that South Africa is likely to see a total of 61 days of power outages during the April-August 2022 period, which suggests load shedding every three days. “With load shedding wreaking havoc, the use of gas appliances has increased in many households over the last few months,” said Rowland Ramalingam, head of non-motor claims at “WhetherSantam.you’re considering buying a gas stove or have already purchased a gas heater in anticipation of the upcoming winter chill, there are several safety considerations you need to prioritise when you have your gas appliances “Generally, installed.

Although gas is safe to use if installed in accordance with the regulations, the most common types of hazards associated with its use include explosions and fire, he said. There are a number of guidelines to take into consideration where gas installation is concerned.

When gas stoves are in use, ensure sufficient ventilation, do not open the gas flame too high, and make sure the gas is turned off properly after use.

One of the most common places people are hijacked is their own driveway. If you think you’re being followed, don’t turn into your driveway – rather keep driving. If the car stays behind you, drive straight to the nearest police station. And even if there’s no-one around you, don’t drive straight into your driveway: if you’re able to, pull up parallel to the road while the gate is opening, so that you have some space to get away if you see a suspicious vehicle approaching.

DON’T BE THE HERO

There’s an increasing trend of hijackers stopping suddenly on a highway offramp or busy street. When you stop, they take your car at gunpoint. Another modus operandi is for the hijackers to bump into your car from behind, to make you pull over and assess the damage.

H

ijacking is rapidly becoming the leading type of vehicle crime in South Africa. According to the SA Police Service crime statistics released last month, 5,455 hijackings were reported between October and December 2021 – a 13.8% increase over the same period the previous year.

WATCH OUT FOR CARS SLOWING DOWN

If a hijack happens, just give up your car and your possessions. Move slowly. Keep your hands visible, and don’t look directly at the hijackers. If you have children in the car, tell the hijacker that you’re going to take a few seconds to get them out. Don’t get involved in verbal or physical altercations. Your life is worth more than your earthly possessions. MAKE SURE YOU’RE COVERED

Page 10

BE CAREFUL THAT YOU’RE NOT BEING FOLLOWED

When stopped at intersections, don’t check your messages or fiddle with the car radio. Stay alert to what’s happening around you, and watch out for any potential threats. Keep your windows closed and your doors locked, and leave enough room in the traffic to avoid getting boxed in.

HIJACKING: 5 WAYS TO AVOID BECOMING A STATISTIC

So how do you reduce your chances of becoming the latest statistic? It’s all about staying alert when you’re behind the wheel, says King Price’s client experience partner, Wynand van Vuuren.

Make sure that your car insurance cover is up to date and that you do what’s required of you. Also, check whether your policy offers emergency assistance, in case anything happens to you, and make sure that you’ve saved the number on your phone.

HERE ARE HIS TOP 5 TIPS TO AVOID BEING HIJACKED!

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

• They remove your number plate, drive next to you and show you the plate; when you stop, they hijack you.

• Take note of similar vehicles: Hijackings are often well planned. The target is followed for days before the incident; therefore, take note if you see the same vehicles that keep popping up on your daily travels.

Mpumalanga was the only province to record a decline in hijackings.

• Don’t just drive into your driveway: Be cognizant of what vehicles are around you, and if a vehicle has been taking the same turns as you, do not just drive into your driveway.

• They show you that you have a flat tyre; when you stop to check, they hijack you.

The data, which was presented by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Friday (19 August), covers the period between April and June 2022.

Hijackings are also up quarter-on-quarter, climbing 8.6% from 5,402 cases recorded in Q4 2021/2022. Looking at hijacking trends over the three-month period, there was a sharp jump in May, followed by a decline in June.

• They physically bump you, and when you get out to inspect the damage, they hijack you.

• Report: Always report any suspicious activity immediately to your local neighbourhood watch or security company.

The group also noted that with the advent of home deliveries over the last few years, people are now being targeted when they wait at their gate for delivery, with the gate being blocked by a criminal, allowing them to gain entry into the property and access to vehicles.

• “Police hijacking”/Blue light gang activity where criminals pose as law enforcement officers.

These are the hotspot areas and trends to look out for

• Keep moving: Try to have someone open a gate for you if it is not electric, and if it is, try to open it for the minimum time possible with the least stationary time in your vehicle.

South Africa’s crime statistics for Q1 2022/2023 show another steep increase in hijackings across the country.

To keep safe and prevent falling victim to hijackers, tracking companies recommend the following:

HIJACKING TRENDS

• Consider time: Always be aware and alert of your surroundings, especially when pulling into driveways and idling at traffic lights. We generally find that the hijacking peak occurs late in the evening when people may be returning home from work and are tired and relaxed. For the full stats go to https://businesstech.co.za/news

• Toyota Hilux • Volkswagen Polo • Toyota Quantum • Nissan NP200 This lines up with the SAPS’ latest data, which shows that sedans, hatchbacks and bakkies are the most hijacked vehicle types in the country.

BIG JUMP IN HIJACKINGS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Tracking group Netstar’s data also lines up with the report.

Page 11

When it comes to vehicles and vehicle types that are targetted by hijackers, bakkies continue to be high on the list for the probability of getting hijacked, Tracker said.

Security company Fidelity’s recent data shows hijackers most often targeted Toyota and Volkswagen vehicles, with targetted models including:

A total of 5,866 hijackings were reported across the country over the period – a 14% increase from the 5,146 hijackings reported over the same period the previous year – and averages to a car stolen every 22 minutes in the country.

As with the country’s other major crime statistics, the majority of the cases were reported in the most populous areas. Most carjacking cases were reported in Gauteng (3,113), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (913) and the Western Cape (754).

Tracker South Africa recently warned that hijackers in the country are changing their strategies in the country to adapt to new technologies. This includes the increased use of key re-programmers and signal grabbers to counteract new technologies like ‘push to start’ buttons in vehicles.

The group said that the prime targets for hijacking are primarily mid-level sedans and luxury SUVs.

Netstar recently noted the following ways vehicle-related crimes are committed in South Africa:

Inmates admit that they will do anything to get you or your family members to open your safe, even if it means harming you. This proves that safes are actually I dangerous. Hollow doors or doors with decorative glass can be kicked down or smashed open and are easy access points. Therefore investing in plate glass, slam lock security gates and solid wooden doors, are the safest way to go. Once a burglar realises that he cannot enter your home easily, he will give up and move on.

What really are the most effective, essentials? Information gathered from numerous prisoners, currently serving time for burglary and home invasion, revealed which security options were the most and least affective. The main security factors that work, according to the inmates, have to do with movement, noise, visibility, ease of access and escape routes. When a burglar or a team of home invaders, target a home, they look for external and internal elements of the property that will hide them from prying eyes. Therefore, building high walls, hedges, and putting up thick curtains, immediately makes you high risk. If they can intrude and steal your valuables without neighbors or passersby seeing them, then it is easy for them to be successful. A concealed home also means that you must be hiding something valuable. Razor wire fencing with barbed wire or an electric fence is more of a deterrent, as your home is visible to others.

IS IT SAFE TO HAVE A SAFE?

WHAT EXTRA STEPS CAN YOU TAKE TO ENSURE YOURS AND YOUR FAMILY’S SAFETY?

Be aware of your surroundings. Vacant land, a road, railway line or a forest, adjacent to your home, are easy escape routes and access points. Get to know your neighbors. Join the Neighborhood Watch and local Whatsapp groups as well as the Community Policing Forums. Once your neighbors know you well enough, they will pick up on your routines and behaviors. This is helpful; as they will notice strange activity in your home during the times they know you are not at home. It would be prudent to learn from the men and women who have been caught and convicted for robbing South African homes. Focus on the key essentials. Audible alarm with early warning systems such as external beams, motion sensor lights and cameras linked to your armed response company. Clear visibility with live electric or barbed wire fencing that limit ease of access are good additions. Finally, invest in slam lock security gates, strong doors and burglar guards.

SAFE...

You have just moved into your new home with your family. Next on your list of the many things to take care of, is securing your home and making sure your family is safe. The insurance company has given you their requirements; insisting on,burglar guards for your windows and security gates for your doors, a safe for the storage of jewelry, an armed response alarm system and a lock-up garage or automated gate to keep your vehicles safe. However, you feel as if you should do more. According to the latest available statistics, of the 14,5 million households in South Africa 2.1 million have been affected by some form of robbery. This translates to 14.8% of South African households.

YOU ARE FEELING OVERWHELMED by the many security options available to you as well as questioning whether or not you are going to be able to afford to implement everything. Purchasing external door and window beams, motion sensors, security cameras, a CCTV system and alarm system, electric or barbed wire fences, burglar guards and slam lock gates, can run into to tens of thousands of Rands. While all this is tempting, it is just not financially viable for the majority of South African home owners.

The inmates also confirmed that if a property has motion sensor cameras, they will not enter. This is because when these cameras detect movement, they alert you via your preferred device, giving the intruder no time at all to get in and out of the property Noiseundetected.scares intruders away, therefore having an audible alarm system activated by motion sensor lights and or beams, internally and externally are a wise investment. If, for any reason at all, you are unable to activate your alarm system and you are not at home, leaving a radio or a television on, tricks the intruder into thinking that someone is at home, causing them to rule your property out as a target.

Page SECURITY,12

Having a visible armed response company sign on your property is vital, so that the burglars know your home is being surveilled, and that they have limited time before armed response arrives, should the alarm sound.

WHAT WORKS?

SO WHAT WORKS?

The Final Word

ne of the strange things in life is how we can find ourselves in a unique situation. I am very security conscious. However that does not make me or us immune to hijacking or Weburglary.livein a gated community that is not guarded so we have become security aware. We have an alarm and garden beams as well as the standard burglar 2protection.Weekends ago my kids went to stay with friends in order to give my good lady and I some alone time. We had a quiet dinner and eventually went to sleep. At about 3 am I could hear movement in my office. My first thought was that my wife was doing something in the office but how could that be she was laying next to me. Then I thought it was one of the kids but no they were away for the weekend. So we had uninvited Iguests.hadjust bought a gas gun I don’t like guns but I thought that with all the hijackings in my area the gas gun might be a deterrent. I grabbed it loaded it and slowly, really slowly, walked towards the study. I caught a glimpse of our 2 uninvited guests trying to take my computer and rummaging through the office. I was afraid and angry. I wasn’t sure if I shoot the gun at them or fire a warning shot into the air I chose the latter. Let me tell you about that gun, you know how loud a rock concert can be well it quiet compared to the volume of the gun in the dead of night in a narrow passage!!!!!! I don’t know who got more of a fright the uninvited guests, my wife or me. Needless to say the guests left without paying straight through the window and I think they are still running towards Pretoria. My good lady came out of the bedroom steel golf club in hand and looking like she got the fright of her life which in reality she had just Megotten.Ihad to shower afterward. So what has this taught me. You can never have enough security and we need to be prepared for any Buteventurallity.aboveall don’t fire a gas gun in a narrow passage in the dead of night.
