WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE EVERY YEAR AT OUR ROSH HASHANAH
Messianic service, we have a tradition. We actually have many traditions, but one of them is to dip apples in honey. It’s a way of saying, “May you have a sweet year.” Even though Rosh Hashanah falls in September, it marks the beginning of the new year on the Jewish calendar, and it sets the tone for the year to come. You see, after Rosh Hashanah (September 20) there are 10 days of awe.
During these 10 days, Jewish people believe God is deciding how the following year will be for them. Will it be a good or bad year? Their actions over the 10 days will seal their fate, so there are a lot of good deeds and repentance happening. And on the final day, Yom Kippur, an animal is sacrificed (in some Orthodox traditions) to forgive their sins for another year. I sat next to a secular Jewish man on an airplane once during the 10 days of awe. He was reading his Torah and said he reads it every year at this time to find God. I asked him if I could show him some verses in it that point to Jesus. When I did, it was like his entire countenance changed. That’s because when we introduce Jesus, everything changes. As Christians, we can view this particular holiday through a completely different lens. Rather than a time of deep, somber reflection, we can have a joyful celebration because Jesus’ blood is sufficient to cover our sins forever—not just for one more year. It’s truly a joyful occasion for believers!
In this issue of Gateway Life, there are many reasons to celebrate! Pink Impact is coming back to the Southlake Campus next year, and Pastor Debbie has exciting news to share about this powerful women’s event (page 8). You’ll also want to read about a man whose journey with God was changed by Gateway Equip (page 12) and the story behind GATEWAY’s newest album, Monuments (page 11). Whether or not you celebrate Rosh Hashanah, I want to encourage you to take some time this month to reflect on your salvation. It’s easy to take it for granted, but when we realize that Jesus’ blood has wiped our sins away forever, it’s something to celebrate!

The 20 Gateway Performing Arts Godspell cast members memorized 1,731 measures of music, and 3,957 guests attended performances at the
Dallas Campus, including 231 guests gifted with tickets from 48 of Gateway’s local ministry partners. Godspell began as John-Michael Tebelak’s master’s thesis in 1970 and didn’t originally include a resurrection scene at the end. • At Gateway’s Presbytery services, 18 presbyters prophesied over 171 individual candidates. In addition, many people attending the services also received personal prophetic words. • 543 people were baptized during our churchwide water baptism services in July. • This summer, 1,914 people attended The Global Leadership Summit at Gateway Church—1 of 1,375 sites worldwide streaming the simulcast from South Barrington, Illinois.

“I came to the United States in February 2016. I work for an electricity company and some of my coworkers invited me to Gateway so I started coming to church with them. I’m originally from Iran, but I lived in Turkey as a refugee for three years, and then I came here. We left Iran because if we stayed, they would kill me for my religious beliefs.
It’s a Muslim country but there are Christian churches there, and if you are born into Christianity you can go to church, but if you leave Islam they will kill you. My children came with me, but my dad and sister are still in Iran because they are Muslim. My father didn’t want to leave, but I’m glad to be here. In fact, I was just baptized yesterday!”
“My girls (ages 14, 10, and 8) and I were so thrilled to be a part of Access Outreach! The family we were with had three boys who all varied on the autism spectrum. Their father told me how much it meant to him that we would give up our Saturday to be with his family. With tears in his eyes, he said that they feel very alone as parents of children with special needs. So he was more than blessed that Gateway organized the buddies and that my girls were so kind to his boys and comfortable with them.

was at the gym and when I left, I called my mom who co-owned a bridal boutique with me. We decided we should go ahead into work because we felt that it would be a day of ministry. It was. Everyone who came in just needed to talk, cry, or vent about the tragedy. My mom felt led to put a Scripture in our window. She wrote out John 16:33 on a piece of white paper with a black marker. That day and throughout the 10 years to follow, people would come by just to tell us what the verse meant to them. Washing the window one day in 2011, I bumped the paper and one corner ripped so we took it down. The paper was a little brittle but the words never faded.”

was in elementary school. Before school, my parents had the news on, and my mother said, ‘Did a plane just hit the tower?’ She thought it was surely a fake image and took me to school. Later that morning, everything stopped in classrooms as TVs were turned on. My school was close to the NASA Space Center, so many parents were concerned that might get hit and took their kids out. I stayed the day there in confusion, but I’ll never forget my mom’s face when she first saw the footage. Now, I’m a junior high teacher. The kids who weren’t alive yet are largely unaware but need to know the gravity of that day. When September 11 comes around, we spend the whole day discussing what happened, often full of tears.”

“LAST NIGHT, I ATTENDED THE PRESBYTERY SERVICE AT GATEWAY DALLAS, AND I GOT CHILLS when I heard one of the words. One of the presbyters asked everyone in their 20s to stand, and I was shocked by the number of young adults who were scattered about the room on a Monday night. He gave them this word: ‘God has an exchange for you: if you will continue to worship Him, He will give you your generation.’ My heart was heavy knowing how much could change if the Church would wake up and stand against what is happening in our world. I’m believing this word to be true, and I’m excited to see what God will do through the younger generations.”

OVER THE YEARS Pink Impact has seen many changes. Growing each year to accommodate more people eventually led the conference to the Fort Worth Convention Center where attendance ranged from 8,500 to 9,500 for the last two years. And, what an amazing experience it has been to watch God move in all of us, all at once. But there was a problem. The cost of continually finding more building space to accommodate all those attending the live event was quickly beginning to outprice what many of our own Gateway women and younger women could afford, especially when tacking on travel and hotel costs. And then the Lord spoke. One week before Pink Impact this year, while in prayer, Pastor Debbie heard the Lord say from Mark 5:18–19 (nlt), “Go home to your family and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful He has been.” As the day unfolded, it became clear God was doing something new and exciting that would allow everyone to participate in the conference! Pink Impact 2018 is returning to the Gateway Southlake Campus on May 18 and 19. With one live event and general admission tickets for only $99, seats will sell out fast! It’s our desire that our 4,000 seats are filled with Gateway Women. Registration opens October 1, 2017, for the live event! Mark your calendars and secure your tickets.
Now it gets really fun ... We’re adding a new online experience—the Pink Impact watch party! This $29 online experience will be available for groups of 1 to 12 people for at-home viewing. Our most powerful, life-changing moments often happen in small groups, surrounded by friends. We believe the watch parties will allow the conference to minister to so many more women without the limitations of building space and price. So between our live event and the Pink Impact watch parties, we have something for every Gateway woman! We are very excited about this new direction. F RO M PA S TO R D E B B I E’S H E A RT Why are you so excited about this shift? I know God spoke to my heart. This wasn't a bunch of beautiful minds thinking how can we spend less money and reach more people. To be honest, my team and I had spent a year looking at options and this never came up as a possibility.
What do you see as the true benefits? Every woman can participate! Over 10 years ago, we changed the name of our women’s conference (from a name that reminded me of a feminine product) to Pink Impact. But it was more than a change of name. I nailed down two values that would govern the conference. First, we would always focus on the Gateway woman. And second, but equal in importance, was a desire to reach young women. Prior to God speaking to my heart, I was frustrated because the extra expense of having the conference in a different location made attending difficult for many of the lovely women I wanted to participate.
What do you hope every Gateway woman hears about Pink Impact? Pink Impact is like a deep tissue massage for your spirit. If you have never been, try it! There is something so special about a room full of women when faith is bouncing off the walls, truth is demolishing lies, and love and worship are expressed freely.
What is a watch party? It is friends gathered to experience Pink Impact together. Girlfriends reclining in the comfort of a home. We are committed to doing everything we can to make these experiences amazing!
Will this be simulcast to all the Gateway campuses? Our plan is to only open the Southlake Campus, but there will be hundreds of watch parties in your area.

2. Run to a buddy for support.
When Navy SEALs are dropped behind enemy lines, there are three questions they ask themselves: Where am I? Where is the enemy? Where is my buddy? Everyone needs a trusted, godly friend— a buddy—to lean upon in times of trouble and confusion. Don’t have one? Get one! Joining a Gateway Group is a great way to build relationships.
3. Supplement your faith.
When you are not strong enough, when you know what God’s Word says but still doubt, or when you can believe it for others but are having trouble believing it for yourself, you need to borrow some faith to overcome your unbelief. That means admitting your weakness and asking for help. Do what the father did in Mark 9:23–24. Jesus told him all things are possible for those who believe, and he responded, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

What do I do when God is silent? by PASTOR TOM LANE HEN IT SEEMS LIKE GOD IS SILENT, the natural question is why? Is He mad? Have I done something to separate us? Will I ever hear Him again? The truth is, God is never silent. He just speaks softly, but the enemy tries to shout louder. The enemy’s accusing voice attempts to create regret, worry, fear, and a sense of loneliness. What’s needed in this moment is faith. Faith enables us to know with confidence that God is with us. But when the noise of our circumstances is louder than the whisper of God’s voice, how can we ensure we are doing what God wants and tackle the insecurity created by the enemy’s attack? Here are four things we can do:
1. Stand on God’s Word.
Stand firm in your commitment to Him. Recite Proverbs 18:10 (esv), “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” His Word is true, so stand on it. Don’t allow any voice—yours or the enemy’s—to convince you to run away from God when you can’t hear Him.

4. Stay the course.
Continue doing the last thing God told you to do. Let these qualities be found in all your responses: diligence—give your very best effort and don’t take shortcuts; faithfulness—remain obedient to His assignment and command; and commitment—no matter what, look to God. The Apostle Paul said it this way in 1 Corinthians 15:58 (esv): “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”
When it seems that God is silent, know for sure He is not silent; He is speaking ever so softly. When the noise around you is louder than the softness of His voice, these four responses will help you keep your perspective until the noise of the situation dies down and the voice of the Lord becomes clear to you! EIGHT YEARS AGO, Jerry and Janis Harper found themselves at home on a Sunday night with nothing to do. The church they usually attended had canceled services for that evening. They sat on their couch and turned on their TV only to run across a channel with a Texas preacher. He caught their interest and after listening to the message, they said, “Wow, wouldn't it be great if we could visit that church next time we go to Denton to visit Abi? That church is not far from there!” (Their daughter was working on a degree at the University of North Texas.) That TV preacher was Pastor Robert, and what began as a missed Sunday night service turned into something that would change them forever. Jerry, a Christian since the ’80s and retired Marine, unexpectedly moved to the Dallas area for work about a year ago, which enabled him and Janis to start attending Gateway in person. They loved the weekend services but something had been stirred inside them. They wanted to serve and establish some friendships here too. Thinking that starting out as volunteers would be a good way to get their feet wet at Gateway, they set out one night to attend the Guest Experience Volunteer Orientation, but God had other plans. When they got to the Southlake Campus, they asked the first person they saw where the orientation was being held, and he directed them to the Gateway Equip volunteer meeting instead. “I like to say he shanghaied us!” Jerry says with a laugh. “But it was God-ordained—He surprised us with
something better.” Jerry and Janis were introduced to Gateway Equip classes, and they felt like they hit the jackpot. “When I realized the wealth and depth and breadth of the knowledge offered, I was overwhelmed at first,” Jerry says. “But when I got past that feeling and saw that it was lovingly being presented to me to enjoy and soak in for His glory and to fully equip me for every phase of life, I was hooked.”
accident when that pastor directed them to the Equip volunteer meeting, they were meant to be part of Equip. Now, every time Equip is on the schedule, you’ll find Jerry and Janis there. They not only love attending any and all the classes they can, they love the energy and community in Equip— seeing newcomers blown away by the spiritual insight or watching someone who came by themselves suddenly in
Jerry and Janis were introduced to Gateway Equip classes, and they felt like they hit the jackpot. He began helping out as a classroom host, and after serving, he would sit in on classes reveling in every word. From freedom to Messianic to worship classes, he started taking them all. You’d often find him tearing up in the back of the room as he discovered new revelation or insight from the Lord. “Several of the classes gave me tangible proof that there was more to God’s Word and this Christian life,” Jerry says. “Equip gave me the tools to read the white space between the words and start hearing God’s voice. It taught me how to worship and come into His presence, and it helped me realize who God is and who I am.” He and Janis even made a bunch of friends and started attending a Gateway Group with people they met in Equip. They know now that it wasn’t just a happy
the midst of five or six people chatting about the class—it’s like watching his own experience again and again. In the 30 years since becoming a Christian, he’s never experienced so much concentrated spiritual growth as he has in this year of attending Equip, and he’s thrilled. “Equip is my heartbeat. God has worked in me so much through this ministry, and I’m still so excited about it,” Jerry says. “Wherever you are in life, you’re going to find a class that appeals to you at Equip. God will speak to you and help you become who you were meant to be. Everyone should come to Equip!”. GL Gateway Equip starts up again at all campuses this month! How one couple uses their Airbnb to share the gospel. by Katie Smith
DAY MICHELE BAILEY CLOSED on her new home, she walked through it and began to pray. She started asking God to make it a “mission home,” but she didn’t really know what that meant at the time. As a missionary herself, Michele had lived in Haiti on and off for several years, so her idea of “missions” had to do with orphans and the needy in her beloved second home. Nevertheless, she began dreaming about what her new “mission home” in Carrollton would look like. A couple months later, Michele ran across an ad on Facebook for Airbnb, an online marketplace for travelers to rent accommodations. “I realized I could rent out a room periodically, which could help fund my work in Haiti,” she says. Michele, a single woman at the time, took all the necessary precautions—she changed her locks and put security procedures in place for herself and renters—and listed her home as an Airbnb location. Her first renter was a youth pastor and his wife who were in the midst of a turning point in their ministry. “I spent time in prayer and great conversation with them, speaking into their lives a bit,” Michele says. “And I thought, Thank you, God, that I get to do this in my house.” Finally realizing what her “mission home” prayer meant, she continued to rent out to different people in between trips back and forth to Haiti, and it was during this time she met Riis Christensen, now her husband. Almost immediately, he began helping her with her Airbnb renters. One of the first times he helped her, he picked up two Hindu-practicing young men from the airport who were from India. They were enrolling in school in Dallas so they planned to stay for six weeks. Riis brought them back to the house, and they all sat at the kitchen table half the night talking about Christ. “They saw my pictures on the walls of Haiti, and they said, ‘Wow, you do that for poor people?’” Michele says. “And I responded, ‘No, I do that for God.’ They
started asking me about Jesus, and I shared the gospel with them.” A few days later, Michele and Riis invited the guys to attend church with them. They said yes, and they all sat in Gateway’s Sunday service. After the message, one of the guys leaned over to Michele and whispered, “How do I receive Christ?” “We went down to the front with him, and he received Christ that day,” Michele says. “It was amazing.” He was the first, but definitely not the last, person to receive Christ while living in her home. Michele and Riis got married soon after and have continued to rent out a room in their home to many international guests with various beliefs—Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists— and because renters share a living room and kitchen with Michele and Riis, opportunities to initiate conversation and share meals are easy to find. It often turns into Michele and Riis helping people in other practical ways too. “We’ve helped people find apartments, purchase furniture, set up bank accounts and cellphone contracts, and do so many other things. Riis took two days off work once to help a Muslim couple find a car,” Michele says. “And when they ask why we do what we do, we point them to Jesus.” It’s been four years since Michele first opened her home, and in that time, she’s had a lot of beautiful and crazy experiences with renters: from praying with people, to calling the FBI, to staying in touch with renters-turned-friends years later. It’s never been easy, but it’s been rewarding in more ways than one. They’ve learned a lot about other cultures, food, and traditions and tackled perceptions and preconceived notions of people groups. And each rent check helps Michele fund her ministry in Haiti. “We thought we were doing this to support a ministry, but God used it as ministry,” Riis says. “He’s sending people right to our door.” GL Michele and Riis Christensen live in Carrollton and attend Gateway’s Dallas Campus. I Marvel at It by LEILA WILSON T THE VERY MENTION OF ANOTHER SUPERHERO STORY—especially one
with Greek mythology themes—the average moviegoer might be inclined to say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” However, this summer’s Wonder Woman not only possesses the expected entertainment value within a well-told storyline but also, beneath that expensive CGI veneer, offers a depth that’s worth exploring. When the knowledge of a war-torn world reaches Diana (aka Wonder Woman), she decides to leave the idyllic confines of her Amazon society of Themyscira in search of her arch-enemy, the Greek god of war, Ares. Her mission is to find him and end the war that threatens to destroy mankind. Filled with kindness, compassion, and sincerity that in no way negates her sheer power as a warriordaughter of Zeus, Diana is thrust into the gray and harsh backdrop of England in World War I. She plunges into her sacred purpose at the cost of losing her family, friends, and all she has ever known. This is reminiscent of that same courage and promise found in Mark 10:28–30 when the disciples left everything to follow Jesus. Although in this Scripture Jesus was speaking of leaving “home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for Me and the gospel,” it captures the same feeling of being driven away from the safety of home by a higher

purpose. Diana’s higher purpose defines her very identity, even when she doesn’t fully understand it. Her behaviors and decisions align with that purpose. Diana seemed to know the price of not answering the call when she was confronted by her mother, Queen Hippolyta, while leaving the island after dark, “If you choose to leave, you may never return.” To which Diana answered, “Who will I be if I stay?” I venture to say that she would not have completed her purpose, and mankind would have suffered had she chosen safety with the Amazons. She later says, “Only love can truly save the world. So I fight, and I give, for the world I know it can be.” Similarly, we each have a higher purpose, a reason for being here on earth. And if we stay safe and hidden from the world, not only do we not live out our true purpose, but mankind also suffers. We each have a part to play in spreading God’s Good News and saving mankind through love. Who will you be if you stay? GL

LEDA RUPERT I FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS IRISH ACCENT. I met my husband at TGI Fridays where I was a hostess working nights. He would always sit in the restaurant and drink Diet Coke. He never talked to me, but he always smiled at me. I thought he was cute and told my friend to set us up on a date. We went out and then got married six months later. He’s since lost his accent, but I still think he’s adorable. MY FAVORITE WORD IS “BAUMKUCHEN.” It’s a German word that means “tree cake.” We lived in Germany for three years, and this was one German word I never forgot and could actually remember how to pronounce. It was our favorite dessert at Christmastime, and it reminds me of great family time. Now that we’re back here in Texas, I found a German store that sells it, and we still enjoy it during Advent. GROWING UP, I WANTED TO BE A REGISTERED NURSE. I thought it would be so much fun. I used to watch ER and pretend I was a nurse. But during my senior year, I was in a class where we worked in all the different areas of a hospital. I nearly passed out in every area except housekeeping and physical therapy. I suddenly realized that I could not stand the sight of blood or seeing people get shots! I LOVE WATERFALLS. The sound of water makes me so happy and helps me relax. I could look at a waterfall for an hour and just listen to the water coming down. When you are next to one, it’s so loud it’s all you can hear.
