We seek to make that impact in Jesus’ name and ONE THING I ENJOY MOST
not our own, and I’m reminded of this through stories like these. On a recent trip to Guatemala, our team visited a ministry partner that provides education to children and ministry to families in a povertystricken area. In one home, a single father lives with his three young sons and daughter. The family, like many of their neighbors, lives hand-to-mouth in a house with a dirt floor and wood planks upon which they sleep. Without the help of our ministry partner dar, these children would have no education or hope of advancement. The same goes for members of a community in South Africa where a slum crowded with shacks is home to refugees from surrounding countries. It’s a highly concentrated area and 75 percent of its population is hiv positive. We partner with Impact Africa to sponsor a preschool on the edge of this community that feeds the kids two meals a day and puts them in a program that gives them a head start in life. These are just two small examples, but there are thousands of untold stories just like these, thanks to
your willingness to pray, give, and go! In this issue of Gateway Life magazine, we are celebrating our impact around the world. Be sure to read about the way God is using Gateway’s partners to reach the world. Take a look at how Gateway is helping Hurricane Harvey victims (page 8), and learn about the simple yet powerful way you can be a blessing to children overseas this Christmas (page 12). The gospel has truly enriched our lives, and it is our pure desire to share God’s love with others. There are so many who live next door to us, in other communities around our city, and in the most remote corners of the world who have not clearly heard the truth. We are compelled to go and share the gospel with them, and I hope you’ll join us as we celebrate all God is doing through Gateway!

OON AFTER HURRICANE HARVEY HIT THE TEXAS GULF
coast, Garrett Marshall and some friends decided they’d had enough. Late one night, they’d been watching the news stories and videos on social media showing Harvey’s flood victims struggling to get to safety, and around midnight they came up with a plan. In the early hours of the next morning, Garrett, who attends the Gateway Grand Prairie Campus, kissed his wife and five kids goodbye, and he and his friends headed to Houston with a boat hitched to the back of their vehicle. “We’re just a bunch of lake rats,” he says. “We know how to operate a boat, and we thought they could use our help.” That turned out to be an understatement. Upon arriving in the greater Houston area, they launched their boat into the floodwater in a residential area that didn’t seem to have very many boats helping out. The work was overwhelming. “We were barely in the city when someone saw we had a boat and shouted they needed some help getting people out of their houses,” he says. “The water was so deep you couldn’t even see houses’ first floors. People were hanging out of second-story windows waving white flags and asking for help.” They immediately got to work cruising through the
neighborhood calling for women and children who needed to move to higher ground as the rain poured relentlessly. At one house, a woman handed Garrett a basket of blankets before she got into the boat. “I thought it was just some belongings and then I heard this little wail,” he says. “I pulled back the blanket and saw a three-month-old baby boy.” It was a significant moment for Garrett because back at home, his 11-month-old was tucked away safely in a warm bed—a simple comfort these flood victims won’t be able to enjoy for a while. That’s when the gravity of the situation hit him hard. During the 48 hours he and his friends were pulling people to safety—most of which was done on little sleep— Garrett helped rescue elderly people, people in wheelchairs, small children, and people with medical needs. “I’d ask them if they had all their medication,” he says. “And if they forgot, I’d ask them where they keep it, go in the house, and grab everything I could to make sure they had it all.” When they returned home two days later, exhausted and waterlogged, they already planned a follow-up trip to continue helping those affected by the storm. “We knew we had a boat and supplies and were able-bodied people who could help,” Garrett says. “We felt the call, and we just went.” GL

How to connect with your community this fall by DANIEL HOPKINS
O
CTOBER IS HERE, AND THAT MEANS COOLER TEMPERATURES, homecoming games, pumpkin-flavored everything, and more family time. The fall season also presents us with an amazing opportunity to take the Church to our neighborhoods and communities. In fact, many families will be out and about on October 31. While we encourage alternatives to celebrating Halloween, this is a great opportunity to reach people for the Lord as they’re walking around our neighborhoods. So what does this look like? We’re glad you asked! We’ve compiled a list of simple ideas you, your family, and your Gateway Group can use to connect with and serve your communities this month.
1. Have a Neighborhood Party
Invite your neighborhood families over for an afternoon of carving or painting pumpkins. You can serve light refreshments and enjoy a more focused time of conversation with your neighbors and their families.
2. Give a Treat
Rather than knocking on neighborhood doors and taking a treat, why not give one? Put together little snack packs or treat bags, ring some doorbells, bless your neighbors, and invite them to church.

3. Get Your Group Together
Are you looking for a reason to get together with your Gateway Group? Have a mini Fall Festival with your Gateway Group and invite the whole neighborhood. Get a bounce house for the kids, have a costume contest where everyone wins, grill some burgers, and get to know your neighbors.
4. Set Up a Driveway Fire Pit
Set up a fire pit in your driveway or front yard and share some hot dogs, s’mores, and hot cider with your neighbors. Rather than just dropping a treat in a bucket, get to know your neighbors. Talk with them as you serve them. Don’t miss an opportunity to interact with them and encourage them.
5. Have an Apartment Party
Find out if your apartment is hosting a party, and ask what you can do to help out. If there’s not a party planned, grill some hot dogs and get some candy to hand out to neighbors as they are out and about. Most apartment complexes have a centrally located community grill you can use that is sure to attract residents. GL

Pastor Mark Harris on Writing Worship Music by Katie Smith
WE RECENTLY SAT DOWN WITH PASTOR MARK HARRIS, a Dove Award–winning and Grammy-nominated songwriter who also happens to be Gateway’s associate senior pastor of worship, and picked his brain about techniques, tools, and the how-tos of songwriting. And boy, did he deliver. Whether he’s leading worship from Gateway’s platform or encouraging young songwriters in writing sessions, Pastor Mark has bucketloads of wisdom to share. Check out some of the knowledge we gleaned from one of Gateway’s masters of song. 1. Writers are listeners. “The best writers are the best listeners. You can’t write something unless you know what to write about! If I’m going to write a worship song, I usually first spend time praying, reading Scripture or a book, or worshipping, so I can hear what the Lord might want me to write. You have to stop long enough to hear what needs to be sung!” 2. Melody is king.“Most of the time, when someone hears a song, what they remember most is the melody. Even if you have a great idea and beautiful lyrics, the melody is usually what captures and hooks a person. To give your song the best chance of being remembered, make sure your melody is strong and easily singable.” 3. Know your audience.“Worship song lyrics are typically ‘vertical,’ meaning they are addressed from you to God. Although some worship songs express something about God and His attributes, most are directed toward Him.” 4. Work it. “I don’t think a lot of great songwriters start out as great songwriters. Some of it is natural ability, but I think a lot of it is hard work and perseverance. So find a space to get inspired, get out a pen and paper, and
try brainstorming. For instance, if I want to write a song about grace, I write out everything I think about ‘grace.’ Sometimes it’s good to not take your pen off the paper until you fill the whole page, even if it’s nonsense. I also like to ask why, when, where, and what questions. So if I’m writing about God’s greatness, I ask myself,‘Why is God great? What makes Him great?’ and go from there.” 5. The scary part. “Song writing includes an editing process, and editing often means taking away, not adding more. Sometimes I really like the first version, but if I’m flexible and have an open mind, it can become even better. Get feedback from people you trust and can be vulnerable with. I’m a big fan of cowriting. Collaboration often makes a song stronger, and an outside perspective is always so helpful.” 6. Let it go. “Sometimes it’s hard to know when a song is ‘done.’ You can get so caught up in the editing and revising process and not realize you’re stuck there. Then you might miss out on other songs that God might lead you to write. At times, the best thing I can do is move on.” 7. Don’t be discouraged. “Not all songs will go worldwide. Some songs may be just for you and God to share. There are songs that God lets me write just to get to the next song, and I’ve written many things that nobody has heard but were created to express the overflow of my heart. I believe a song will have its day if it’s supposed to have its day. One of our own shares how she received Operation Christmas Child boxes as a child. by Katie Smith
AS GABRIELLE NORD CAREFULLY FILLED A SHOEBOX with gifts, tears filled her eyes. She had come full circle. She closed the shoebox and wondered who would be on the receiving end of it and remembered how, years ago, she was. Growing up in an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was not easy. Life was filled with bullies and bare feet. Gabrielle never knew her birth parents, and though she had a biological brother in the orphanage with her, he was much older. She was mostly on her own, and there were days when food was scarce. One day around Christmas, when Gabrielle was six years old, everyone in the orphanage was told to dress in their finest clothes to go on a day trip. All the kids packed into a big yellow school bus and later arrived at a stadium filled with children from other orphanages in the area. There was prayer and worship, and then everyone was fed. “After we were all full, they started passing out these boxes,” Gabrielle says. “Everyone got one, and they really blessed us.” Gabrielle’s

orphanage was able to take that trip two years in a row and then stopped. It wasn’t until she was adopted by a family in the United States 10 years later and saw Gateway partnering with Samaritan’s Purse to send out Operation Christmas Child boxes that she realized where the boxes came from. “I remember seeing one day that Gateway sent out boxes and thinking, Wait! I received two of those!” she says. Christmas in a Haitian orphanage doesn’t come with many good memories, but those two years Gabrielle received Operation Christmas Child boxes became favorite moments. “I grew up with nothing. What little I did have was usually taken by older kids,” Gabrielle says. “So we enjoyed and cherished those gifts as much as possible. We especially liked the hard candies and little dolls or cars!” In 2010, after the devastating earthquake shook Haiti and destroyed the orphanage where she lived, Gabrielle and three other young girls from the orphanage were adopted by Gateway members Greg and Heather Main. Gabrielle spent several hard years learning English, adjusting to American life, and undergoing freedom ministry to conquer the things she experienced as a child. Now she lovingly serves in Gateway Kids at the North Fort Worth Campus, sings in the Gateway Worship Choir, and is currently writing out her experiences in a book. And every year around Christmastime, she thinks back to those boxes she received.
“The kid you bless today may be the adult you see tomorrow ...” “At the time, we couldn’t say thank you to the people who sent the boxes, but we were so grateful,” Gabrielle says. “Let me tell you, these boxes actually do something. And the kid you bless today may become the adult you see tomorrow doing something that matters. Any little thing, like putting gifts in a shoebox, can impact someone.” Last Christmas, Gabrielle set out to send her own Operation Christmas Child boxes. “It was an amazing feeling. I wanted to stuff the boxes with as much as I could!” she says with a laugh, “If I had a ton of money, I would send thousands of boxes to all the kids. Because I used to be one of them, and I know how much it meant to me.” GL
MORE ABOUT OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Operation Christmas Child, a Samaritan’s Purse project, collects shoebox donations filled with fun toys, school supplies, and hygiene items. Boxes are delivered to children in need around the world to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way. For many of these children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they ever receive. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, has collected more than 146 million shoebox gifts and delivered them to children in more than 160 countries and territories. In 2017, Operation Christmas Child hopes to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 12 million children in countries like Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Ukraine. Nearly 11.5 million shoebox gifts were collected worldwide in 2016, with more than 9.1 million collected in the United States. Delivered into the hands of children through local churches, every shoebox gift is an opportunity to share about Jesus Christ and God’s love.

What are you made of? by SHANE DENNEHEY
Y
EARS AGO, MY WIFE’S GRANDFATHER “PAPA” GAVE ME A GREAT GIFT.
He and his wife were moving out of their tiny house in Oklahoma to a new place where they could retire so he was giving things he valued to his children and grandchildren. I got a beat-up, old wooden workbench that some may call “vintage” today. It was covered with history—nicks, dings, and imperfections reflecting its 50 years as a work surface for mechanics at a Ford dealership where Papa was an accountant. I like to imagine that many heavy tools were dropped carelessly on its resolute surface, yet it withstood the abuse. When the dealership was remodeled, Papa took the workbench home and used it for his own woodworking projects. But eventually, he used it less and less, and after 15 years, he needed to find it a new home. Papa gave me the workbench because he and I shared the love of woodworking. Before I became a graphic designer, I was a carpenter. I did it professionally and as a hobby. To me, this old, beat-up work surface was priceless. In fact, I knew it was made of rock maple—some of the hardest wood you can get—traditionally used to make the very best butcher blocks. Its pieces are held together by three long, threaded steel rods, so when the glue wears out over time, it stands strong. The person who made this workbench really knew what he was doing.

I could’ve spent an hour sanding down the surface and making it look pristine—like a brandnew table—but I didn’t. Instead I realized all the dings and blemishes are what made it beautiful. They tell a story not only about where the bench has been but also what it’s made of—its character. I can’t help but see the parallel with our own lives. The One who made us really knew what He was doing. He made us with the best materials and the finest craftsmanship. However, life has a way of knocking the corners off of you. We undergo difficult situations and circumstances that leave imperfections and wounds. But God made us with a purpose, and He is still there ready to use us despite our scars. In fact, He sent His son to die for us because of the sin in our lives. That’s how valuable we are to Him. Eventually, I fitted the workbench onto another old desk and brought it to my Gateway office. I use it every day, and as I glance over the rough, worn edges of this 75-year-old surface, I’m reminded that despite my own imperfections, our Creator still sees the value in me and chooses to use me every day. JIM HALL AS A TEEN, I MADE A BIG SPLASH. A moment that will forever be etched into my mind was baptism Sunday at the First Assembly of God Church in Ponca City. When it was my time to be in the limelight, I gracefully stepped down into the baptismal tank, tripped, and fell with a significant splash! It was a massively embarrassing entrance. I LOVE PEOPLE. Sheree and I spent a year in Sweden at a Bible school, and it really kickstarted my love for people all over the world. For years after that, I would go on short-term ministry trips, sometimes on a monthly basis. I especially loved going to former communist countries. I was in Berlin when the wall was being disassembled, and once the people in Eastern Europe were relieved of the oppression of communism, they became so hungry for the Lord. They would take buses and trains and walk miles and stand in the back just to hear the Word. Nothing discouraged them from their hunger for Christ. That’s what drew me to those places. I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A GREAT HUSBAND AND DAD. After being raised by a religiousperfectionist father who was extremely angry and abusive, I wanted to be the exact opposite for my children. After my wife and I were told by US Navy medical staff that we could not have children, I wondered if I would ever have the chance. But God blessed our lives with two handsome sons and a beautiful daughter! We’ve been extremely blessed with 13 grandchildren as well!
