IN RESPONSE TO PASTOR JOSH MORRIS’S MESSAGE “BUILD GOD’S KINGDOM”

GREG CLARK “I’ve been a member of Gateway for more than 13 years and a firefighter in Fort Worth for almost 19 years. Last year, a friend told me about Emergency Volunteer Project, an organization that recruits firefighters from around the world to go to Israel and help when there’s a need. So last November, when wildland fires started by terrorists had overwhelmed all of Israel’s firefighters, I was deployed to go help fight fires for seven days. Within six days, we had the fires under control and even had time to go explore the Old City in Jerusalem. I have always strongly believed in supporting and praying for Israel and the Jews, but it was an honor to be able to support them doing what I do best, ‘putting the wet stuff on the red stuff.’”

KEVIN MICHAEL WOLD JR. “I moved here from Louisiana the week of Christmas musical auditions. I only had two friends in the area, and I really wasn’t sure how things were going to work out or what exactly God was up to. I auditioned and was so privileged to be cast in Chasing Lights! To be a male dancer and have the opportunity to do a contemporary piece in church for a

kingdom purpose is very rare. I’ve never experienced anything like this—being surrounded by a group of people who all have a passion for the performing arts and Christ! It has confirmed and affirmed things in my life and has served as a launching pad into a new level in my relationship with God and my creative gifts.”

“WHEN MY WIFE, LEAH, AND I COMMITTED TO THE 21-DAY CHURCHWIDE FAST, our enthusiasm was high but our questions were many. We still had doubts about three whole weeks without Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets and Wendy’s hamburgers. But that was the point. God wanted to teach us to rely on Him each day to provide a different hunger: a hunger for His Word. And in exchange, He’d subside the desire for Snickers and PopTarts. Leah and I have both been profoundly affected over these last weeks, and we’ve grown stronger together in Christ.” Scott Silverii | via Facebook

TERESA AND DALE CONKEL “During the last four months, my husband, Dale, has been out of work. I received a portion of my inheritance from my mother’s estate (she passed away the same day Dale was laid off ), and I felt compelled to tithe off the inheritance. We asked Pastor Mark Jobe to agree with us in prayer for direction for Dale, and the next day he had a job interview and two days later was hired! He also received an additional performance bonus (in addition to his severance pay) from the company that laid him off. And to top it off, his new job pays 30 percent more than his last one! The Lord has truly blessed us!”

The doctors were 95% sure I’d need chemo and extensive treatment. My husband and I were devastated. We had good friends who invited us to Gateway, so we came and immediately fell in love with it. I gave my life to Christ that day. Then we saw that baptisms were coming up. We decided then that this whole situation was not for us to handle but for Him. I had surgery the week beforehand to remove a tumor and received a call saying my cancer was downgraded to grade one—and there would be no other treatment needed. So on that day in September, while I was still in recovery after the surgery, we both stepped in the pool celebrating God’s miracle.” Kimberly McCaa | via phone

ASK A PASTOR GATEWAY PASTORS ANSWER YOUR DIFFICULT QUESTIONS

Why is church attendance so important? by DR. ROBB BREWER

H

ave you ever heard someone say, “I’m in the church building anytime the doors are unlocked”? For many people, church attendance is fundamental to their lives each week. But in contrast, many have made the choice in recent years to stop attending church. Maybe it was due to a negative experience, or maybe the busyness of life has left little time for church. While going to church provides good teaching and needed worship, there are three additional very important reasons why followers of Jesus should attend church and become a part of the community, even when they’ve had a negative experience. 1. The Church provides power against the enemy. Matthew 16:18 (ESV) A while back, I needed to dig a new post-hole for my fence. I plunged a manual digger into the ground and quickly discovered that only six inches beneath the soil was a thick layer of sticky black clay. I didn’t have the arm strength to muscle through the paste. Once I rented a gas-driven digger, I had all the power I needed. The Church provides the same level of spiritual power and authority to Christians. On our own, we don’t have the spiritual stamina to overcome the enemy. So, along with the Holy Spirit, the Lord gave us the church as a place over which the enemy will never gain victory. By stepping away from church and avoiding community, a person steps away from this power. 2. The church provides spiritual purpose. Romans 12:5 (ESV) After my alarm wails each morning, I stumble out of bed and wander to the kitchen. Upon arriving there, I’ve never looked down to

notice my arms are still in bed, unwilling to join the rest of me. It’s because they are connected to me. They are a part of me and go where my body goes. Though my arms function individually, they find purpose and protection in the rest of the body, as does a Christian in the church. Each church is made up of many unique individuals, all of whom are connected through Christ. Just like a hand has no purpose or ability unless it’s connected to the body, by joining a church body, a person finds spiritual purpose and connection. Stepping away from church introduces isolation and vulnerability. 3. God dwells in the church. Ephesians 2:22 (ESV) Christians have been taught that Jesus lives in our hearts; however, the full expression of God’s dwelling can only happen among other believers, within the Church. In the Old Testament, God’s presence lived in the temple. Only certain priests could experience His presence, and only at a defined time of the year. In the New Testament, God’s presence lives in those who follow Jesus, and is always available. But His presence is most fully experienced and understood, not in our personal quiet time, but when two or more believers come together. God’s presence brings rest, freedom, and justice; each of these are in high demand in our fast-paced, overworked modern age. By being a part of a church, we access God’s presence and invoke His plan to bring His kingdom to the earth. Granted, the Church hasn’t always done this well, but it remains His plan. The instant a person steps away from church or from people, they begin to distance themselves from the fullness of God’s presence. I hope you can see attending church means more than simply participating in a social gathering. The church is God’s mechanism for distributing His power, purpose, and presence. The more we can attend church and engage with the people there, the more we position ourselves for God’s fullness. When kids age out of the foster care system, Brandy Coty steps in. by DANIEL HOPKINS

B

RANDY COTY STOOD IN HER KITCHEN preparing dinner for her family. It was a quiet moment in what some might describe as a chaotic season of her life. Out of nowhere—with no reason and no words—one of Brandy’s girls walked over and hugged her. She had never done that before, and Brandy knew the significance of the moment because of the nature of the girl’s past. Child Protective Services (cps) had removed her from a physically and sexually abusive home and placed her in the foster care system at a young age. She bounced from home to home until she turned 18. Reaching adulthood meant there was nowhere to go—she’d “aged out.” Similar stories can be told by the other girls in Brandy’s care and by foster kids all over the country.

Hearing stories like these moved Brandy to take action and start a non-profit organization called Zoie’s Place—a home for girls who have aged out of the foster care system but are desperately unprepared for life on their own. And it’s not just some sterile, transitional facility—it’s her home. Essentially, Brandy, a single, 32-year-old member of Gateway, opens her home to take in girls the foster care system has failed and show them the love of Jesus while equipping them for adulthood. As of now, the three spots she has available are occupied by a 22-year-old, and two 18-year-old girls. “One of my girls was homeless—straight from the streets,” says Brandy. “Another one of my girls came from Austin Street Homeless Shelter, and my third girl came from a rickety hotel in South Dallas.”

GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM  13

Brandy estimates that in all of Dallas, there are only 40 to 60 beds for young women in this situation—a number that pales in comparison to the 411 homeless youth recorded in Dallas in 2015. Without resources like Zoie’s Place, these girls would have very limited options. “They would be staying at shelters,” says Brandy. “They would be sleeping on the train and in the streets.” Yet Zoie’s Place offers more than just a place to sleep. Her goal is to help her girls acquire the basic skills they never learned growing up. In fact, as she is sharing her story with me, one of the girls is sitting at the kitchen table taking a GED practice test. Every night, they all cook dinner together, and then she helps them fill out job applications and pick out clothes, so they can look their best for job interviews. “One of my girls came to me with just the outfit she had on and a pair of pajamas,” says Brandy. “You can’t start looking for a job until you get them acclimated to a new way of living. Now the girl works two jobs.” She has helped them get new clothes, photo IDs, social security cards, and birth certificates among other things. Though Zoie’s Place has only been operating for six months, it grew from a seed planted when Brandy worked as a CPS caseworker 10 years ago. Fresh out of college, she encountered things she never expected. “I had kids who were in full-body casts from the physical abuse,” she says. “I remember my first case as a social worker. I went to see two siblings,

Outreach

FINALLY HOME Gateway helps give a veteran and his family a brand-new home. AS THE GATEWAY OUTREACH TEAM BRAINSTORMED their next home makeover project, they felt a shift. This would be their fourth project renovating or building a house for a family in need, but this year they sensed God was leading them to do something a little different. “We felt the Lord leading us to bless a wounded veteran,” says Troy Wierman, pastor of Gateway Outreach. So we partnered with two organizations: 1) Operation Finally Home, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping veterans and their families by providing custom-built, mortgagefree homes, and 2) Cameron Custom Homes, a builder who has helped with Gateway’s home makeover outreaches in the past. This three-fold partnership worked together to find a veteran to bless with a new home. “After combing through applications with Operation Finally Home and praying over who the Lord was asking us to bless, we found the Jantz family,” says Pastor Troy. “And something just clicked. We knew the house would be for them.”

ABOUT THE JANTZ FAMILY Travis Jantz served in the Air Force as a jet engine mechanic for three years

and then enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman for another seven years. During his time in the Army, he was deployed to Iraq twice, moving up to Staff Sergeant rank and engaging the enemy on several occasions. In a couple combat situations, Travis experienced explosive blasts that rendered him unconscious and injured. As a result, he now has combat-related disabilities including a traumatic brain injury as well as post-traumatic stress disorder. He currently works as an airplane mechanic in San Antonio, and he and his wife, Kristen, have a two-year-old named Easton, who was born prematurely. Kristen works as a nurse on the night shift and takes care of Easton during the day while Travis works. They’ve wanted to move to Dallas/ Fort Worth for a job opportunity for Travis, but they haven’t been able to financially make the move yet. Travis and Kristen are actively involved in their church in San Antonio and have

a beloved emotional-support dog for Travis named Betty.

HOME SWEET HOME On February 18, 2017, Gateway, Operation Finally Home, and Cameron Custom Homes surprised this deserving family with a new, mortgage-free home in Watauga, Texas! With help from volunteers, corporate sponsors such as Home Depot, and other generous people, Gateway is paying for a small portion of their medical bills and arranged for an interior designer to help them furnish their new home. It’s because of you that Gateway can bless this hero and his family. THE INTERSECTION FAITH + POP CULTURE

Need to Knead

by PASTOR MARY JO PIERCE

T

hree years ago, challenged to figure out what Sabbath really looked like in my life, I discovered one of the hidden treasures of the special, set-apart holy day. And of all places, I found it in my kitchen! I learned that a key to a traditional Jewish Sabbath meal is Challah (sounds like “ha-la”)—a beautifully intricate and rich braided loaf of bread—so I decided to make it. I thought, I can do this! What’s so complicated about a little flour, water, eggs, and yeast? Thankfully, I found the entire process to be very forgiving, friendly, and just plain fun! My first attempt was comical. But lost in the flour mess and watching the yeast bubble, I tapped into a wonder and awe watching the ingredients all work together. And in a short amount of time, my house was filled with the wonderful aroma of freshly baked bread and my heart with a warm “well done.” Oh, I wish you could smell the yumminess through these pages. Now, I bake Challah every week as part of my Sabbath. I listen to worship music as I mix the ingredients and wait for them to rise, and I meet with the Lord. Then I share my newly baked masterpiece with family and friends, bonding over its goodness while we bless the Lord and one another. In the past three years, I’ve discovered the gifts of rest, worship, prayer, fun, hospitality, and mentoring through this simple act. The hidden treasure is in the simple, unforced rhythm of the baking process. The secret of the Sabbath is slowing down, changing your normal hectic pace by praying, worshipping, and honoring God. And each time I bake bread, I slow down and find rest. I come away full physically but hungry spiritually. It’s funny how one loaf a bread

18  MARCH 2017

can transform how I rest, live my week, pray, and understand Scripture. I tell my worship-leading friends that baking bread is my guitar or piano. I need to knead. It’s often said that the more you make bread, the more you will get to know how it is supposed to look and feel as you mix and knead it. But I have discovered just the opposite. The more I mix and knead and bake bread, the more God shows me new things about tradition, family, blessing, and Sabbath rest. And the more I find others who are hungry as well. Not only for the bread but also for the joy of baking and for rest. I’ve gathered up to 25 women in my kitchen, and together we’ve laughed and prayed around the simple process of baking bread. It’s ageless, it’s genderless, it’s timeless, and it binds us together. I’d like to think that when we reach heaven, the Lord Himself will gather us all for a meal in His presence. And I imagine there will be bread on the table. GL

“Thus God blessed day seven and made it special— an open time for pause and restoration, a sacred zone of Sabbath-keeping, because God rested from all the work He had done in creation that day.” Genesis 2:3 (The VOICE)

ACTIVITIES

CREATED TO ...

MARY JO’S HONEY CHALLAH RECIPE

1. Draw a line connecting all the numbers in order (1-41). 2. Draw a line connecting all the letters in order (A-H). 3. Color it in!

To read more about Pastor Mary Jo Pierce’s experiences baking Challah bread, read The Intersection article on page 18.

Ingredients (Makes two loaves)

• 2 packages (5 tsp.) active dry yeast • 1 cup warm water (110°F) • 4 eggs • ¼ cup sugar • ¼ cup honey • 8 Tbsp. unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 tsp. salt • 5 cups bread flour (or all-purpose) • Canola oil • 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or honey crystals (optional) Step 1: Dissolve the yeast in the warm water, add 1 Tbsp. honey, and whisk together. Let stand until foamy, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Our mission is to help each person at Gateway BELIEVE in Jesus, BELONG to family, BECOME a follower, and BUILD God’s kingdom.

Step 2: Using a stand mixer with a dough hook on low speed, slowly add ingredients to the bowl: 3 eggs (whipped together), sugar, remaining honey, butter, and prepared yeast. Then, one cup at a time, while periodically adding the salt, add 4 ½ cups of flour until the dough is smooth, elastic, and sticky. Then place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Step 3: Knead the dough 100 times (about 5 minutes) until it is not sticky but not stiff (add dusted flour as necessary). Form the dough into a ball, transfer it to a lightly oiled bowl, and lightly gloss the dough with oil. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm area for about two hours. Step 4: Preheat oven to 350°F. Place dough on a lightly floured rolling surface and punch it down (this removes air bubbles). Use cutter to divide the dough in half (to make two loaves). Then cut each into three or four long strips, and braid them! Place the loaves on an oiled baking sheet, and cover with a kitchen towel. Let the dough rise until the loaves double in size and are spongy to the touch, about 45 to 60 minutes.

These will need to last a while ... You should probably jot them down on stone.

Step 5: Gently brush the bread with a beaten egg and sprinkle with seeds or honey crystals. Place bread loaves on lower third of oven for 30 to 35 minutes. Remove when they look golden brown and bounce back when lightly pressed and smell yummy! Let them cool completely on a wire rack (if you can keep from tasting them right away!).

Georgette Shuler has been a member at Gateway for three years. She enjoys photography and took this photo at the Dallas Arboretum. “I am inspired by how many different varieties, colors, and shapes of flowers there are—all beautiful and in different stages of life, much like us.”

PHILLIP HUNTER MY FAMILY NICKNAMED ME “FLYBOY.” My dad was a traveling evangelist and musician, so growing up, we sang together for services and outreaches. One of the first times I sang with my family, instead of twiddling my thumbs or swinging my legs like kids do when they’re nervous on stage, my fingers somehow found my zipper. I zipped and unzipped my pants during the entire song. Thankfully we didn’t have smartphones with video cameras in those days. I STRUGGLED WITH MY CALLING INTO MINISTRY. When I was in high school, my dad was fired from his job at a church, and I was angry at the Church and Christians for a long time. But after college, God began to shift my heart. And ironically, while spending a summer ministering in Tanzania, God gave me a burden for His Church in America. I LOVE THE SOUND OF POPCORN POPPING. Date nights with my wife usually include going to a movie (at a theater with the nice reclining seats!). We get popcorn and just get to “be.” I WROTE A BOOK. I did student ministry for 15 years and had kids who would come to Christ but then fall away soon afterward. In response, I started studying the Bible with them using a strategy my brother was doing in his personal study, and it took off like wildfire. Since coming to Gateway, it has blown up even more, so I wrote it all in a book called The Promise Principle: A New Way to Encounter the Bible, which comes out at Men’s Summit this year! For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

FAMILY Shelly, wife of 11 years. Five children: Atley (10), Avery (10), Canon (8), Champ (6), and Jubilee (2).

EDUCATION Bachelors of history and English from Southwest Baptist University and master of divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

ROLE AT GATEWAY Executive Pastor of Adult Ministries and Gateway Students.

BACKSTORY Called St. Louis, Missouri, home for 30 years, but birth certificate, marriage license, and driver’s license all say Tarrant County.

MARC BOLLING I FEEL AT HOME AT GATEWAY. When my wife and I first started attending in 2002, we didn’t have many close relationships, but we joined a group, and everything clicked after that. I finally felt like people didn’t just know of me, they knew me. Now, it’s like an awesome family reunion every time we come to church. MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. I was on a first date, and the zipper on my pants broke and wouldn’t zip up. I’m still shaking my head on that one. I was pretty young, and it was tough to deal with something like that. Thankfully, I was able to go home and change. I WAS SHOT IN THE ARM. I went deer hunting for the first time in 1991, and another hunter shot me from about 500 yards away. If the bullet was a fourth of an inch lower, I would’ve lost my arm, and if I had taken one step forward, it would’ve killed me instantly. That day, I fully surrendered to the Lord and what He was calling me to: full-time ministry. Needless to say, I haven’t been deer hunting since. MY FAVORITE SOUND IS LAUGHTER! Especially when it’s from my children. You know, the uncontrollable laughter of a one-year-old who can’t talk yet? It makes me smile on the inside and outside. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

FAMILY Christy, wife of 22 years. Four children: Hunter (19), Maddy (16), Logan (15), and Baden (8).

EDUCATION Bachelor’s in strategic management from the University of North Texas, and a master of theology from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University.

ROLE AT GATEWAY Associate Pastor of Outreach.

BACKSTORY Lived in Texas, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and then again in Texas! So, I am a Texan.

CONNIE BROWN I DIDN’T EAT MUCH BEFORE MY WEDDING. My dad performed the ceremony and talked for a full 30 minutes, and I started to feel woozy halfway through. I just kept repeating to myself that I needed to make it through the vows. As we were getting ready for the final “kiss the bride” moment, I lean over to Larry and whispered, “I’m about to faint.” So he decided to kiss me longer to give me time to recover. (My mom later said to me he kissed me too long!) After the kiss, I still hadn’t recovered and was slumping. My dad and Larry had to help me walk back down the aisle! TAKE TIME TO LISTEN. This is the greatest lesson I’ve learned in 28 years of ministry. You never know what’s behind the pain or the behavior unless you listen. A person’s story matters. When you really stop and listen with empathy, it makes all the difference in how you minister to them. I’VE CLIMBED THE TOP FIVE HIGHEST MOUNTAINS IN COLORADO. From the ages of 13 to 30, I climbed a peak in Colorado every summer. Being at the top is the most amazing feeling. It’s almost like you can see to the ends of the earth. My first son was nine months old when Larry and I climbed our last peak. It was so difficult being inaccessible to him while we were on the mountain that we haven’t climbed one since. However, I still love the outdoors and spend as much time as possible outside. It’s where my heart comes alive. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

GENE CARTER WE HEAR GOD BEST WHEN WE’RE STILL. I was coaching college football in Kentucky, and I was presented with the opportunity to go into full-time ministry in Texas. It was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make. It involved leaving what I had worked so hard to achieve and going for what has always been in my heart to do. But the Lord told me as I got quiet and listened, “If you coach college football I will bless you, if you pursue vocational ministry I will bless you.” It was comforting to know that whatever I did, it was not about me at all. It has always been about Him. I LOVE THE SOUND OF POTS AND PANS BANGING IN THE KITCHEN. My mom may not have been the best cook, but she was certainly one of the loudest. I think she did it to wake me up. Now when Patti is banging around in the kitchen, it says something good is about to happen. I’LL NEVER BE SANTA AGAIN. One time here at Gateway, we had a Christmas party with around 800 senior adults. It was a very nice, elegant party, and I thought it would be a good idea to dress as Santa. I rented a costume that was too big. I stuffed it with pillows to help, but when I stepped on stage, the pants began to drop, the pillows got twisted and fell out, and the beard was up around my eyes. I would like to get that moment back. MAKE EVERY MOMENT COUNT! My life verse is Ephesians 5:16, “Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.” Because of my life experiences in the military, sports, and ministry, I have seen the importance of every moment. It reminds me of my favorite movie line from Braveheart: “Every man dies, not every man really lives. Freedom!”

Profile

SION ALFORD EMBRACE YOUR TIME IN THE DESERT! I wrote a book last year called Divine Detours: When God Messes Up Your Plans, and in it I talked a lot about how you can’t stand in your promised land until you’ve walked through the wilderness. I wrote the book to give my kids and grandkids a legacy message: you have to know who you are and whose you are to do what you are called to do. Jesus spent 30 years preparing for a three-year ministry. Ninety percent of Jesus’ earthly life was submerged in the unseen and obscure. It was hidden. The same principle applies with us. Our hidden years are designed by God as a place of discovering who He has created us to be. I WAS A COMPETITIVE BASS FISHERMAN. My dad’s best friend was a great fisherman, and I used to hang out with him all the time. He owned a pharmacy (Although half of it was full of fishing equipment!), and during his time off, he’d teach me to fish. By the time I was 14 years old, I had my own bass boat and competed in tournaments. I eventually went to school to be a pharmacist too and hoped to have a small pharmacy shop that also sold sporting equipment! I’M NOT A FAN OF FIRE ALARMS. One time I was leading worship at the Southlake Campus, and suddenly, all the tech equipment in the sound booth went haywire and the words on the screens turned to gibberish. The worship team was confused, but we kept playing. Then everyone in the Auditorium started to leave. I thought, Man, are we that bad right now? Then I saw one of the sound guys giving me a “time-out” hand signal. When we stopped playing, I could hear the fire alarms going off, which was why everyone was leaving. It was a false alarm, but at least I know it wasn’t the worship team that caused the mass exodus! For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

CRYSTAL MOLINAR I CAME TO GATEWAY DURING CHRISTMAS IN 2013. During worship, chills covered my arms. I felt a presence of something I didn’t understand. When I tucked the kids in bed that night, they asked when we were going back. I knew then Gateway would be our home. To this very day I still get chills during worship. But now I know that what I felt was the presence of the Lord! I FOUND THE LORD THROUGH MY DIVORCE. I was so lost, broken, and alone, and I begged for God to help me. Fast forward, I remarried my husband, but things didn’t go as anticipated. Through it all, I am stronger than I have ever been. When I was in great need, God saved me, and I will follow Him all of my days. WHEN A DARK MOMENT COMES, FACE IT! Don’t hide from it or search for distractions. You have to go through it, not around it or under it or over it. God can’t heal something you’re unwilling to give to Him. This was the hardest and most rewarding lesson I’ve ever learned. I DON’T GET EMBARRASSED OFTEN. But my most embarrassing moment happened when I was a child. I was at a friend’s house, and we were running to go play outside. I was in the lead and ran straight into a glass door and fell backward to the floor. (The glass door was apparently squeaky clean that day.)
