Novelty And Sustainability
April marked the inauguration of the new Terminal 1 area of Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport of Rome Fiumicino, a state-of-the-art infrastructure equipped with 22 gates, more than half of which have piers for boarding. Also in this case the focus was on quality, sustainability and innovation as in all of the latest developments and investments made in the capital’s airports. In particular, structural and plant components designed with the intention to maximize spaces dedicated to passengers and facilitate their orientation. In the new boarding area, with a total area of almost 25,000 m2, there are 12 new loading bridges for direct boarding onto aircrafts, 44 self-boarding gates, as well as digital columns integrated into the structures. In addition, a new baggage handling system was installed in the arrivals area, with 3 new baggage carousels for capacity of an additional 3 million passengers a year. The opening of the new infrastructure to the public adds a further and fundamental element to the review of the entire new Terminal 1, with a total investment of 500 million euros, provodong for the opening of the former boarding area C, planned before of the summer, and the renovation of the former Molo D, which will be started in the coming months. “With this opening,” said CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, Marco Troncone, “we celebrate the conclusion of a milestone in the Terminal 1 expansion and overhaul project, which follows the opening of Pier A last year. An important stage in ADR’s large investment program of 10 billion euros to 2046, which has brought Fiumicino into the global elite in terms of service and quality, supporting Italy’s international connectivity and fueling the socio-economic induced: demonstrating testimony of a company that keeps its promises and exceeds expectations”.

An Inauguration Dedicated To Art
To welcome the passengers, is artwork donated to Aeroporti di Roma called “LEO” by Marco Lodola, an artist who, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, wanted to represent him with luminous LEDs in many different colors, as a tribute in brilliant light. Furthermore, thanks to the long and fruitful collaboration with the Teatro dell’Opera and the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, passengers and guests were entertained by two musical performances during the inauguration event.
