JULY – DECEMBER

GASWORKS ARTS PARK WHAT’S ON GUIDE 2025

Gasworks Arts Park respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of this land, the people of the Kulin Nations. We pay our respect to their Elders, past and present. We acknowledge and uphold their continuing relationship to this land.

Shins Thomas Varghese, Wild Oak Productions

Gasworks is a vital creative precinct. Situated on the site of the former South Melbourne Gas Plant, Gasworks Arts Park comprises two theatres, three gallery spaces, a café, function and workshop spaces, and four hectares of park.

Gasworks presents an annual program of events, including collaborations with Melbourne’s leading festivals, and over 200 performing arts events and 30 visual art exhibitions per year. It is home to 16 artist residencies, farmers markets, classes and workshops, creative and professional development opportunities, family programming, and much much more. For information about booking tickets go to page 48. Visit our website www.gasworks.org.au

Welcome

As I write this, I’ve just started my second week at Gasworks. It’s an honour to be your next Creative Director and CEO. Because there is nowhere else like Gasworks. Nowhere else offers the same range of artforms, from theatre, to comedy, to circus, to visual art, to live music. And nowhere else offers the same range of experiences, from dropping into an artist’s studio while you’re browsing a farmers’ market, to deep diving into Melbourne’s iconic festivals, to unfurling a picnic blanket at a Summer in the Glade concert.

The next six months is a great example of the range of possibilities that are only possible at Gasworks. There’s a return season of a sold-out dance work Touch, a smorgasbord of the best of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, and community art exhibitions from 8-year-old to 80-year-old creatives.

If the next six months will look like what you’ve come to expect of Gasworks, 2026 will look a bit different. As well as retaining all the things you know and love about this place, we are currently planning a whole new range of activities for our 40th birthday year in 2026.

We can’t wait for you to join us as we unleash the unique potential of this vital creative precinct. And we can’t wait to welcome you to Gasworks — to gather, to connect, to belong, and to be transformed by creativity.

See you soon.

TOUCH made waves with a sold-out run at Dancehouse Melbourne during the 2023 Melbourne Fringe Festival, hailed as a mustsee performance. Championing diversity and multiculturalism, this production provides a platform for unity, celebrating differences, and transcending boundaries through the universal language of dance.

At its heart, TOUCH delves into personal narratives, addressing themes of prejudice and isolation while seamlessly blending Ballet and Bharathanatyam. By challenging conventional paradigms and celebrating cultural richness, TOUCH sparks dialogues on inclusivity and acceptance.

This project has been Fringe Funded.

Turbulence is the undercurrent but it’s all about the thrill.

Fringe: Theatre METRO

Step aboard a Melbourne train unlike any you’ve ever known. In Metro, eight strangers travel not just through the city, but through the haunting terrain of grief. Told in a series of interconnected stories, this bold new work explores the complex, often chaotic path toward healing — one stage of grief at a time. Influenced by the surrealism of David Lynch and the disorienting beauty of postmodern theatre, Metro surrounds its audience with imagery, sound, and raw emotion. With the train carriage at the centre of the stage and the audience encircling the action, you’re not just watching the journey — you’re on it.

The process teaches us a lot about metal as a fundamental element we take so much for granted in the hidden wiring of our contemporary world.

You will be the proud owner of a precious, handcrafted item of copper, unless it gives you more joy to pass it on to a loved one!

Please note: The workshop takes place outdoors, so please dress appropriately, and wear robust, non-precious clothes and solid shoes.

Group Exhibition

SEVEN

Linda Condon | Jane Curtain | Sara Curtain | Dianne Gameson Phin Murphy | Ann Stinton | Annie White 15 – 27 Jul  Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery & Heritage Hallway

Seven brings a group of artists together through friendship and the love of art in its many different forms. Each artist comes to the collective with a range of ideas, use of mediums and life experiences that are reflected in the diversity of the works.

Inspiration for each artist is as varied as the work presented — all have something to say and a different way to say it. From a fantastical slant on our world to the influence of significant global art movements. From the love of landscapes across the globe, to the moods and seasons of the Australian bush. From exploring beautiful colours to combining fabrics of different textures and designs. And even to the use of natural elements from the earth to reflect their impact on us.

Exhibition

DREAMING PLACES AND TRANSIT TIMES

Andrew Pearson

 24 Jun – 13 Jul  Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery

This series of work was an irrepressible need to express emotional, romantic and pragmatic contemplations that have occurred for me over the past 7 years. Time spent on many plane flights descending over familiar but always mesmeric terrain. Tree lines, fault lines, song lines, power lines, lights that shimmer along distant streets and stars suspended on gossamer threads to eternity. There is evidence of humanity and spaces that seem blissfully unaware of human existence. I respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of these lands and pay my respects to elders past and present of the Ngarrindjeri, Peramangk, Kaurna, Barngarla, Nauo, Cammeraygal, Wallumedegal and Gadigal people.

Exhibition

HOMAGE TO NATURE

Susan Bowron

 29 Jul – 10 Aug

 Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery

“In this body of work I play with colour, light and perspective to capture my experience of different Australian landscapes.

Water features prominently in the paintings as a life force and universal solvent and acts as an important element alongside the solid.

The viewer is invited to explore the profound depths of human experience through their interpretations and engagement with nature through the different moods, locations and styles. We question our understanding of nature’s impact and its universal force and our place within it.”

Exhibition

CONVERSATIONS

Linden Dean

 5–31 Aug 

“Art is a great forum to project a voice. Through an artist’s work, the focus of the voice stays ‘visible’ for much longer. My challenge is to create work that encourages conversation. My naive style has always been narrative. It’s my way of expressing ideas, impressions and feelings. My work usually says something personal, social or political. I try to do this using colour, pattern and imagery. I am also interested in using a variety of media and experimenting in ways that are new to me.”

Exhibition hA.I.ku

Leanne Poole

 12 – 31 Aug  Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery

“In hA.I.ku, I explore the uneasy presence of artificial intelligence in our daily lives through papermaking, and the slow, deliberate craft of Joomchi — an ancient Korean method of transforming paper using water, pressure, and time. At the centre of the exhibition is a series of stitched haiku. Some are written by humans, others by AI. Their authorship is initially withheld. Can a poem generated by code evoke the same feeling as one born from lived experience?

I’d like you to think about the increasing blur between human and machine, author and algorithm. AI is already shaping how we work, communicate, and create; often without regulation, consent, or even public understanding. Through handmade processes that resist speed, I aim to reclaim space for slowness and consideration. What are we automating? What are we surrendering?”

Exhibition

EMERALD HILL ART GROUP ANNUAL EXHIBITION

Eunice Barter | Linda Crooke | Barry Davidson | Lauris Davidson | Rosie Lovell

John Monro | Elizabeth Montgomery | Steve McLeod | Pam O’Neill | Sue Picot

 1 – 28 Sep

 Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery & James McCaughey Foyer Gallery

The Emerald Hill Art Group has been a gathering of local artists for 40 years. This year, the exhibition includes watercolours, oil paintings, pen and ink artworks. Please join us at Gasworks for the 2025 exhibition, showcasing an eclectic mix of paintings where each artist has developed their personal creative style with their preferred medium.

Exhibition / Workshop KEEP IN TOUCH

Louise Samuelsson | Sam Kariotis | James Anselmo-Forlano

Jorja Timms | Alana Davis

24 Sep – 26 Oct  James McCaughey Foyer Gallery

Exhibition launch: 24 Sep, 6–8pm | Supper Club: 6 Oct, 6–8pm

Visible Mending Workshop: 15 Oct, 18 Oct

Keep in Touch is a project exploring loneliness through craft art, visible mending workshops, and a supper club. The craft art exhibition invites audiences to reflect on their own relationships to connection and solitude, and explore how loneliness is felt, understood, and healed. As emerging artists map the tender terrain of loneliness — Keep in Touch becomes a reminder that connection, like craft, is something we make by hand.

Keep in Touch is proudly supported by the City of Port Phillip Cultural Development Fund.

Exhibition

COLOURSCAPES

 28 Oct – 16 Nov  Foyer Gallery

Colour and pattern are fundamental to my paintings. I am fascinated by the diversity of Australia’s landscape across place, time and season. Colour resonates through bursts of bright wattle, the transient light of desert sunsets and the protective shadow of a coastal track. Natural patterns are formed by strobing eucalypts, weather-worn boulders and windswept foliage.

Painting in oils, she continues to explore technique and subject matter. Colourscapes, her third solo exhibition in five years, includes recent inspirations and some past themes.

Exhibition HIDDEN MYTHS

Eduard Ingles

 28 Oct – 23 Nov  Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery

Hidden Myths is a visual journey into the timeless world of Greek mythology, reimagined through the lens of our contemporary realities. This body of work explores the enduring relevance of ancient myths and their moral lessons, offering fresh interpretations of stories such as Pandora’s Box, Prometheus’ Fire, and The Fall of Icarus. Through symbolic compositions, bold geometric abstractions, and striking colour contrasts, these paintings invite viewers to reflect on modern life from an allegorical perspective. In an age shaped by rapid technological innovation, artificial intelligence, and the relentless pursuit of success, these age-old narratives find new resonance.

Exhibition

CLARENDON CHILDREN’S CENTRE

Clarendon Children’s Centre

 18 – 30 Nov  James McCaughey Foyer Gallery

The children of Clarendon Children’s Centre share the work they have created in collaboration with local artist, Cressida Crossley. With time, space and technique from Cressida, the children explore, discover, reflect and mindfully engage with sustainable and colourful processes.

Gasworks Arts Park has an ongoing partnership with CCC where artist Louise Samuelsson brings together the body of work in a fun, vibrant and meaningful exhibition for the community, teachers and families to enjoy. Come and see the amazing work and say “Wow, this looks like a 3-year-old did that… because they did!

Exhibition

The educational philosophy driving the school involves the most up-to-date educational theory and delivers the Victorian Pathways Certificate using a negotiated curriculum that considers the personal needs of the individual learner.
