Spring is in the Air and Love is Everywhere

Our days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer for most days here in NC and flowers are blooming. Sunshine, warm weather and daylight make this girl a happy soul.

Spring also means new beginnings, letting go of the old and starting anew, spring cleaning and decluttering. It’s always hard to get started, but what a feeling when you’re done. Here are some suggestions that can help you begin your purging process, but not all at once, or you’ll get overwhelmed.

So, choose one and go for it by removing unused items in your living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, closet, garage, office or digital space. You will feel so refreshed.

In this issue our writers provide you with new things to try. New foods to sample or fashions choices to make, indoor and outdoor activities, gadgets on the horizon, welcoming new pets to your home, financial planning in the current environment and charitable giving to support our youth.

Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams

Caviar, or sturgeon roe, has a rich history dating back to noble antiquity. It has been a cultural symbol of sophistication and prosperity for centuries and remains in high demand worldwide. With many countries producing and consuming caviar, sustainability practices have become a concern for many connoisseurs. However, some caviar retailers pride themselves on partnering with pedigree producers who prioritize ethical harvesting, including premium caviar company Black Crown Caviar, based in Charlotte, North Carolina—where luxury meets sustainability. I worked with Jami from 3 Keys Wine Distributers, and we just created this beautiful event and people really enjoyed it and I received great feedback on that. So, I started working on other events and I’ve done a couple of events in Charleston and Daniel Island and I have more events coming up with different country clubs in the future,” says Watson.

The Black Crown Caviar name represents prestige and exclusivity. “Black signifies caviar’s deep, rich color, a mark of its superior quality and authenticity. Crown embodies the brand’s commitment to excellence, a tribute to the emperors, czars, and aristocrats who had caviar for their royal feasts. Caviar is not just a delicacy; it’s an experience, an art, and a symbol of refined taste. This is more than just caviar—it’s a statement, a tradition, a crown-worthy indulgence,” states Watson.

Food has always been a passion for Watson, and that passion is reflected in her businesses. Aside from Black Crown Caviar, she also owns Crepe Bistro, a family-owned restaurant with an Eastern European flair. Originally from Ukraine, Watson had always dreamed of having a restaurant and decided to turn her dream into reality when she opened Crepe Bistro in 2016. Located at 1605 Galleria Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina, the quaint restaurant is a cultural delight with something for everyone to enjoy.

“I love talking to people and meeting new people, and I feel like food is the best way to do that. I also loved the idea of bringing something with more of a European touch to the Charlotte area. That’s why I chose crepes. I know that crepes sound French, but in Eastern Europe, in Ukraine, we call them nalysnyky, which translates to crepes. It’s a very common food item in Ukraine, and it is traditional for holidays and on a regular basis,” explains Watson.

Working alongside her mother, Galyna Shepeliuk, and her sister, Marina Zhaburovska, Watson creates handcrafted sweet and savory crepes, omelets, wraps, waffles, and gourmet paninis. During her extensive worldwide travels, she curated select ingredients for the restaurant’s menu based on her favorite creperies. The secret to Crepe Bistro’s award-winning crepes? It’s all about the batter. Watson’s mother uses her authentic Ukrainian recipe; love is the main ingredient.

Among Watson’s savory favorites is the Monte Cristo crepe. This mouthwatering combination is an absolute musttry. It’s filled with chicken, ham, Swiss cheese, mustard, and mayo and served with a dollop of raspberry jam on the side. A chocolate enthusiast, Watson also enjoys the Nutella crepe, which features Nutella, fresh strawberries, bananas, whipped cream, and powdered sugar. Crepe Bistro offers over 18 different crepe combinations, including new caviar crepes featuring Black Crown Caviar—which customers

can also purchase at Crepe Bistro. They can even pair their caviar crepes with a shimmering glass of champagne, as the restaurant serves beer and wine, with many brunch-goers opting for bellinis.

While owning and operating two successful companies can be demanding, Watson enjoys doing business and values education and continuous learning. She holds a Spanish and foreign language teaching degree from Kyiv National Linguistic University, and her comprehensive background in linguistics has given her a global perspective, allowing her to connect with diverse communities and industries, including the insurance industry.

“Currently, I serve as a producer for Watson Insurance Agency, where I specialize in personal and commercial insurance. Watson Insurance has been a trusted name in the industry since 1934, dedicated to protecting clients and their assets with customized coverage. It is an honor to be part of a team that prioritizes service and community engagement,” shares Watson.

Her husband, Craig Watson, is the Vice President of Watson Insurance Agency in Gastonia, North Carolina, and has been a constant source of inspiration for her. He is greatly involved in the community, and his passion for helping others encouraged Watson to volunteer actively. She continues to be amazed by the support she and her family have received from the community and is always looking for new ways to pay it forward.

In 2016, Watson participated in Dancing for Future Stars. This lively event helps raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Gaston, ensuring that the next generation has opportunities for growth and success. Watson contributed to the cause by performing two dances, a challenging yet exhilarating experience. Additionally, she has supported the BackPack Weekend Food Program, which provides healthy and non-perishable weekend meals during the school year to students in Gaston County who may not have access at home.

“One of my most rewarding roles has been serving as cochair for the Purse Power event, supporting the United Way of Gaston County for three consecutive years. This event funds Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, providing books to children every month and promoting early childhood literacy. Seeing the impact of these initiatives on young minds has been incredibly fulfilling. For over five years, I have also been a board member of the Schiele Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate that serves as a wonderful educational resource for all ages. It has been a privilege to contribute to an institution that fosters curiosity and learning in our community,” says Watson.

maintaining a healthy lifestyle are of equal importance to her. She includes gym time in her daily routine, which clears her mind and gives her the extra energy necessary to achieve her many goals. Watson also has a deep appreciation for fashion and uses it as a creative outlet, where she can express herself freely by staying updated on trends and incorporating style into her day-to-day.

The future looks bright for Watson, who is eager to expand Crepe Bistro with a second location in either Belmont or Gastonia. “Gaston County has given me countless opportunities, and I am proud to give back in every way I can. Whether through fundraising events, educational initiatives, or business ventures, I remain dedicated to making a difference, one step at a time,” declares Watson.

Developing Gaston County’s Future Leaders

Since 1979, Leadership Gaston has played a vital role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Originally founded by the Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce and now overseen by the Gaston Business Association (GBA), the program has spent over four decades enhancing volunteer community leadership and fostering a deeper understanding of Gaston County’s economic, political, and cultural landscape.

Leadership Gaston brings together professionals from diverse backgrounds who have demonstrated leadership potential. The program provides them with a unique opportunity to increase their knowledge of Gaston County, engage with key community stakeholders, and build a lasting network of contacts. With more than 750 alumni, Leadership Gaston has proven to be an invaluable experience for individuals looking to make an impact in their community. The program consists of seven immersive sessions, each dedicated to a specific aspect of the county’s infrastructure and leadership ecosystem:

• Day 1: Leadership & Orientation – An introduction to the program, leadership principles, and networking with fellow class members.

• Day 2: History & Government – A deep dive into Gaston County’s rich history and an opportunity to engage with local government leaders.

• Day 3: Education – Exploring the county’s educational institutions, workforce development initiatives, and their impact on the community.

• Day 4: Public Safety – A behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement, emergency services, and disaster preparedness.

• Day 5: Healthcare – Insight into the county’s healthcare system, including hospital operations and public health initiatives.

• Day 6: Business & Manufacturing – A tour of local industries and discussions on economic development.

• Day 7: Travel/Tourism & Arts/Entertainment – An exploration of Gaston County’s cultural attractions, tourism industry, and economic contributions of the arts.

Leadership Gaston is offered twice a year, with a Spring session running from February to May and a Fall session from August to November. The program is limited to one or two participants per organization, ensuring a diverse and engaging mix of participants. There is still space available for the upcoming Fall session, making this the perfect time to apply.

Graduates of the program remain actively engaged through the Leadership Gaston Alumni Network. Alumni have numerous opportunities to stay connected, including exclusive events, participation in select GBA programs, and engagement through the Leadership Gaston Facebook page.

Cancer survivors deserve a space to heal and regain strength— physically and emotionally. In 2024, we supported 68 survivors through LiveStrong at the YMCA, helping them reclaim their health. Cancer affects millions, and we want to extend this lifechanging program to even more survivors in 2025.

• Afterschool Program ($300 sends one child to camp for one month)

Afterschool programs provide a safe and supportive environment for children to learn and grow. Last year, we served 293 children, including 72 on financial assistance and 14 in foster care. However, 1 in 5 children in the U.S. still lack access to afterschool care. Your gift ensures more children have a safe space to learn, play, and thrive.

• Summer Camp ($1,500 sends one child to camp for one month)

Every child deserves a summer of adventure and growth. In 2024, we provided 116 children—including 27 in foster care—with the opportunity to build friendships, develop skills, and create lifelong memories. With more support, we can extend this experience to even more children in need.

• Summer Feeding Program ($750 to feed kids for one summer, per site)

When school ends, many children lose access to nutritious meals. In 2024, we provided 180 meals at two locations. Hunger affects millions of children, impacting their health and ability to learn. Help us bridge this gap and nourish more children next summer.

• Youth Sports ($60 allows one child to participate in youth sports)

Reflects on Her Memories from Cagney & Lacey

Growing up in the 1980s, long before anyone had heard the term “social media,” there was a phenomenon known as “water cooler TV.” This refers to television shows that sparked conversations among people in the workplace. For instance, I vividly remember the day after Sgt. Christine Cagney, from the hit police drama “Cagney & Lacey,” realized she was an alcoholic and attended her first AA meeting. I couldn’t wait to discuss it with my best friend in our office break room the next day. Trust me, it was the highlight of the workplace chatter back then.

A few months ago, I had the honor of having an entertaining conversation with multi-award-winning actress Sharon Gless to talk to her about her amazing memoir “Apparently There Were Complaints” for my popular podcast, Hollywood Obsessed. I couldn’t wait to discuss her legendary career, which spans over 50 years, and her remarkable life detailed in her book!

Here are some highlights from our hour-long conversation.

TONY MIROS: So Sharon…“Cagney and Lacey” I loved that

show, I watched it every week. Christine Cagney… felt like such a real person. I felt like I knew her because every week we just got more and more into the character and her flaws and the positive things about her. She was just who she was. Did you base her on somebody? Did you do a lot of research on cops? How did she come about?

SHARON GLESS: Well, I did some research on cops. We had a technical advisor, a cop on the set when we first we time when I first came together. and technical advisor. But then after a while, we didn’t need, you know, that assistance. We learned the rules and how Cagney came about, it wasn’t overnight. It was not.

Cagney was, she was trouble. And I loved playing that. There had never been a hero in television in any lead series…. that had flaws. No one taking drugs starring on a TV series. There weren’t people sleeping around who starred in TV series. I mean, in real life, who knows? But I’m saying the characters, you know, they all were like heroes to everybody. Well, this one wasn’t. And she became my hero because I saw where we could put in the flaws and the writers began to see it too. And she became this complicated, difficult human being. And God bless Tyne Daly for allowing me to step up like that.

There’s a story I tell in the book, but I’d like the audience to know what a sport Tyne Daly was. I knew that Cagney was reckless. She had no children. She was a cop. Her father was a cop. But Mary Beth had children. You know, and I went to Tyne and said, “Do you mind every time we have to enter a room, it’s wrong for me to run in last. Do you mind if I run in first?” And she said, “Well, for obvious reasons, I don’t like that idea. Right. But I totally get it.” But I said, “I think this is who this woman is. She’s not cautious. She’s a hot shot. She offends people.” And she said, “okay”. And so Christine started to grow as I started to play her and the writers, you know, started developing her. And, and you could see the dialogue change as the writers got on board as to who I thought she should be.

Stuffed Zucchini Boats

A Springtime Favorite

Get ready for the spring opening of your local farmer’s markets with this garden-fresh recipe. These Stuffed Zucchini Boats are easy to prepare, and incredibly versatile. Easily substitute eggplant and/or yellow squash for the zucchini.

• 2 medium zucchini

• 1 teaspoon olive oil

• 1 pound hot Italian sausage (see notes for substitutions)

• 4 garlic cloves, minced

• 1/2 yellow onion, minced

• 2 cups chopped tomatoes or 1 1/2 cups tomato or marinara sauce

The zucchini is generously filled with a savory sausage meat sauce, topped with gooey mozzarella cheese, and baked to perfection. Alternatively, make this recipe vegetarian by replacing the sausage with a meat alternative, like mushrooms or tofu.

Ingredients

• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

• 2 tablespoons fresh basil, plus more for garnish

Preparation

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan.

2. Add the sausage and allow to brown.

3. Once the sausage is almost fully-cooked, add in the minced garlic and Italian seasoning.

4. Soften the vegetables for a few minutes.

5. Add the tomatoes (salt the tomatoes), or tomato sauce and fresh basil.

6. Simmer for at least 20 minutes if using fresh tomatoes, and 5-10 minutes if using tomato sauce or marinara sauce.

7. While the sauce is simmering, cut the ends off the zucchini. Slice each down the middle, lengthwise.

8. With a spoon, remove the seeds to create a “boat.” Carefully, so as not to remove too much of the flesh.

9. Salt the inside flesh to release excess moisture. Give it a few minutes. Blot the inside with paper towels.

10. Place the hollowed-out zucchini boats into a prepared, oven-safe casserole dish, or cast iron pan. If needed, trim the bottom of each boat to keep steady.

11. Season the inside of the zucchini boats with salt and black pepper. Add a sprinkle of shredded mozzarella cheese to the bottom of each boat.

12. Preheat the oven to 350F (177°C).

13. Generously fill the boats with the meat sauce. Top each with shredded mozzarella cheese.

14. Fill the gaps in the casserole dish with remaining sauce.

Montcross Area Chamber Announces Three Major Awards

Power company workers who have labored for months to restore service after Hurricane Helene, a two-member team who made a difference through their leadership and a public servant who devoted his life to serving his community were honored by the Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce at its 65th Annual Celebration on February 6.

The reception, silent auction, dinner and program were in the Grand Hall at the Mount Holly Municipal Complex from 5:30 until 8 p.m. For more information, go to: www.montcrossareachamber.com.

The chamber annually presents a Business of the Year Award, an EPIC Award for entrepreneurial excellence and the Harley B. Gaston, Jr. Public Service Award to recognize extraordinary community service. The award is named for an attorney and judge who was a founder of the Chamber in 1960.

Receiving the Business of the Year Award were Duke Energy line and service workers who have labored tirelessly in difficult conditions every day since Hurricane Helene devastated much of Western North Carolina in September.

The job of restoring power to more than 1.4 million customers fell largely to the men and women who set poles, hang transformers and string power lines.

So far, more than 14,000 utility poles and nine million feet of wire have been replaced by men and women working around the clock for weeks, many sleeping in their trucks or on cots, away from their homes and families. Many left devastation at their own homes to provide the basic service of electricity to others.

EPIC Award

The two people most responsible for creating the EPIC Award in 2011 received it this year.

Former Montcross Area Chamber President Ted Hall and Vice President Teresa Rankin developed the concept for the award as the Chamber strengthened programs to encourage and support entrepreneurs.

The EPIC Award recognizes recipients for demonstrating that they are Entrepreneurial, Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative.

In the 13 years Ted and Teresa worked together as a team before retiring in 2020, the Chamber grew to more than 500 members. In choosing them to receive the award, the selection committee said through their leadership Ted and Teresa demonstrated all the attributes of an EPIC Award recipient.

Public Service Award

The late Belmont Mayor Richard Turner gave all he could for the City of Belmont for as long as he could. He passed away in July after a short illness.

For his many years of service, which began long before his election as mayor in 2023, Mayor Turner’s wife Marie accepted for him the Harley B. Gaston, Jr. Public Service Award, named for a founder of the Chamber who was an attorney, judge, county commissioner and recipient of many service awards.

Mayor Turner served several community organizations before running for Belmont City Council, including Boy Scout Troop 56 at First United Methodist Church, Belmont Central School PTO, Historic Belmont Foundation and Belmont Historical Society.

In addition to his elected positions as a council member and mayor, his services to the City of Belmont included work on the Planning & Zoning Board, the Parks & Recreation Board, the Council on Government, the Travel & Tourism Authority, and the Gaston-Lincoln-Cleveland Metropolitan Planning Organization.

He also represented Belmont on the Safe Roads to Schools Initiative, on the Technical Advisory Committee on Transportation Issues. And in 2024, he was presented with an award for his service on the NC League of Municipalities Board of Directors.

In a nomination, a fellow mayor in Gaston County wrote of Mayor Turner: “The City of Belmont and Gaston County are truly better places from his efforts, his wisdom and his number of years of public service.”

The snow is melting, the birds are chirping, and the sun is warm again! Happy spring! As we enter the warmer months of the year, we also enter puppy and kitten season. ‘What is this?”, you may ask. Well, the most common time for cats and dogs to have litters of babies is the springtime, which in turn floods our local shelters with animals. This also makes a great time to adopt a new pet. Bringing home a shelter pet is an exhilarating experience, both for you and your new family member. Proper acclimation is crucial to ensuring that your pet settles in well and flourishes in their new home. Here are some do’s and don’ts to help make the transition smoother for you and your new pet.

Do’s

1. Do Provide a Safe Space: Create a small, comfortable area within the home where your pet can retreat to feel safe. This area should include a bed, food, water, and toys. Having a dedicated space can help reduce anxiety and allow your pet to gradually adjust to their new surroundings. This adjustment period may be slow for some pets and can range from a few days to a few months.

2. Do Be Patient: Pets from shelters can have various

emotional and behavioral issues stemming from their past experiences. We aren’t always sure if they were abused, starved, or experienced some form of trauma so these pets may have triggers that may take a long time to train away. Patience is key as they adapt. Allow them to explore and adjust at their own pace without forcing interactions.

3. Do Establish a Routine: Consistency helps pets feel secure. Establish a routine for feeding, walking, and playtime right from the start. This will help your pet know what to expect and when to expect it, reducing stress levels.

4. Do Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward good behavior with treats, pets, or playtime. Positive reinforcement builds trust and encourages repeated good behavior. It’s much more effective than punishment.

5. Do Provide Socialization: Gradually introduce your pet to new people and environments in a controlled manner. Socialization can help prevent behavioral problems and build confidence in your pet. If you shelter your new pet from other people and animals, it may make it difficult to introduce guests into your house without facing aggression.

6. Do Go to a Veterinarian ASAP: Most new shelter pets have parasites such as fleas, ticks, and worms that can be spread to your other pets and even people. A health check up by

3. Don’t Leave Your Pet Alone for Long Periods: Initially, try to avoid leaving your pet alone for long stretches of time. They need reassurance and companionship to adjust effectively. Gradually increase alone time as they become more comfortable.

A Beacon of Community Spirit

In the age of digital domination, independent bookstores continue to thrive within communities, providing invaluable services to local economies and cultures. Belmont Bookshop, located on historic Main Street in Belmont, North Carolina, is no exception. Owned by couple Brian Frederick and Kristina Bulovic, the charming bookstore is a haven for book lovers from all walks of life. Rooted in community engagement, Belmont Bookshop fosters creativity and connection through literary events, book clubs, community partnerships, and more.

For Frederick and Bulovic, the sheer experience of an independent bookstore is unmatched, and because there weren’t any for them to explore in Belmont, they often traveled to different towns and sometimes different states in search of new ones, craving a shared sense of community. Each new literary adventure they embarked on inspired them to open Belmont Bookshop, creating a civic space in their community where people could come together, have meaningful conversations, and share ideas. They recently celebrated the store’s first anniversary in February of this year.

Also, every Wednesday is Treehouse Story Time, where children can venture upstairs to an enchanted tree house, letting their imaginations soar high. “One thing that makes me so happy is when a family walks into the bookshop, and I hear a little kid yell out, ‘I’m going to the tree house!’ and they make a run for the stairs. They go up there because they feel comfortable. That always makes my heart happy because it’s ultimately a space that we want kids to be comfortable in, where they can be themselves, fostering that love of reading so that they can hopefully continue reading forever,” shares Bulovic.

While there’s something for everyone to enjoy at Belmont Bookshop, it’s safe to assume that the most splendid attraction is the store’s gem of a dog, Libby—known by customers as The Queen of Belmont. Libby is a friendly rescue who adores meeting new people. She is often spotted through the window or by the front door, where she brightens everyone’s day with a welcoming wag.

Opening an independent bookstore has been an enriching experience for Frederick and Bulovic. Frederick encourages anyone wondering if they have what it takes to pursue the same dream. “Anybody who wants to open an independent bookshop should go for it if they really believe in why they’re opening it. I believe wholeheartedly that this business, this use of space, can truly transform and help grow the community. And if that’s what you seek to do through literature and community, go for it, and you’ll figure it out,” he says.

Making a Difference

Rotary Club of Gastonia Partners with HH Beam Elementary

HH Beam Elementary School and The Rotary Club of Gastonia are collaborating to enhance learning and improve student outcomes. Under the leadership of Club President Luke Upchurch, the Rotary Club is dedicating its 2024-25 service projects to meaningfully impacting HH Beam students and staff. “I’m incredibly proud of our long-standing partnership with HH Beam,” Upchurch shared. “This year, I aimed to expand our reach and service efforts.” Service Chair Sharon Padgett has been key in coordinating with Principal Beth Crosby and Assistant Principal Dr. Tim Reed.

Creating Connections for Service

In July, at the start of the Rotary year, Dr. Reed introduced and presented an update on the school to the club highlighting the history, mission, and diverse student community of HH Beam Elementary. He emphasized the school’s dedication to fostering an environment where students can reach their full potential. As a Title 1 school, HH Beam serves 615 scholars, many from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Nearly half of the students are multilingual, learning in English at school while speaking another language at home.

Operation Christmas

The club’s partnership with HH Beam Elementary stemmed from its long-standing “Operation Christmas” project. Project Chair Patti Black, explains, “Our club has a rich history of supporting Gaston County children during the holidays. We learned about the need at HH Beam six years ago, and after that first year, we knew we had to continue expanding.”

This year, all 615 HH Beam students received a gift bag, and the club provided holiday gifts for 10 families, benefiting 32 children under age 18. School counselors worked closely with families to create personalized wish lists, ensuring meaningful gifts for each child. Club members contribute annually by shopping, wrapping, donating, and hosting a festive gathering where families pick up gifts, meet Santa, and enjoy a hot dog lunch.

Supporting Literacy

Rotary members actively support learning and literacy at HH Beam Elementary. Before the school year began, volunteers helped sort and organize books for classroom libraries. Through the Gaston Literacy Council’s “Reading SoulMates” program, members serve as reading buddies, meeting weekly with second graders who need extra support to build confidence and improve their reading skills. Beyond literacy, the club provides ongoing support for students and staff. They’ve supplied snacks for staff meetings and hosted a pizza party for the Character Bulldog Club, which celebrates students demonstrating positive character traits. This spring, members will assist with Field Day and volunteer as test proctors.

Thanksgiving Food Distribution

In addition to serving students and staff, the Rotary Club has supported HH Beam in their service with the surrounding community. In late November, 11 members volunteered alongside staff to support Second Harvest in their Thanksgiving food distribution.

Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

Most recently, club members partnered with HH Beam students to participate in “Are You Smarter than a Gaston County 5th Grader”, the signature fundraiser for the Gaston County Education Foundation, competing as “The Beamers of Oz!” with a fun Wizard of Oz theme.

HH Beam Elementary’s landscape got a fresh update in December as Rotary Club members planted over 30 azaleas around the front entrance and driveway. Once in bloom, the vibrant flowers will create a welcoming sight for students and visitors.

Finance Long-Term Financial Goals

Investors Should Not Overreact

Investors have been worried this year about tech stocks, interest rates, and government policies. One big concern is trade policy. President Trump has placed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union, making markets uncertain. How should investors respond?

Long-term investors should stay calm and focus on what they can control. News changes fast, and not all tariff threats actually happen. The Trump administration uses tariffs for more than just protecting U.S. industries—they also use them to negotiate border control, stop illegal drug trade, and raise money for the government.

The U.S. Trade Deficit and Tariffs

The U.S. has used tariffs for a long time to help local businesses. This started during the Industrial Revolution. The McKinley Tariff (1890) and Smoot-Hawley Tariffs (1930) are examples of these policies, but the latter made the Great Depression worse. Over time, trade agreements made markets more open, which helped global growth but also caused some American jobs to move overseas.

Now, the U.S. is shifting back to protectionism. Trump’s administration has increased tariffs, including a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum. Some tariffs on Canada and Mexico were delayed, and China responded by placing tariffs on American goods. These moves have raised fears of a trade war.

How Tariffs Affect the Market

Even though markets react to tariff news, history shows their economic impact is often exaggerated. During Trump’s first term, markets still did well despite trade disputes. This led to agreements like the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and a trade deal with China. Tariffs make up only 1% to 2% of U.S. government revenue, meaning they aren’t a big source of income. Some people believe that reducing the

trade deficit could help American manufacturing, create jobs, and lower dependence on foreign borrowing.

On the other hand, the trade deficit isn’t necessarily bad. It shows that the U.S. economy is strong and that Americans have money to spend on imported goods. Also, foreign investors put money into U.S. markets, which supports business growth and job creation.

Trade and the Stronger Dollar

Concerns about trade have made the U.S. dollar stronger since the last presidential election. Trade and currency are connected—when imports decrease, the dollar gains value. Over the past few months, the dollar has risen compared to other major currencies. However, tariffs can also raise prices for consumers, especially for goods like electronics, cars, and household items.

The Bottom Line

Investors should not overreact to tariff news. While tariffs can create uncertainty, impact the U.S. dollar, and raise prices, history shows markets can still perform well. Instead of focusing on short-term news, investors should keep their long-term financial goals in mind and pay attention to broader economic trends.
