Residents of Woodgate Apartments get a sample lesson from Phillip Penn, a Garland Parks and Recreation boxing instructor.

Did you know

that Garland Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has officially brought Play Streets to the City of Garland? Mobile recreation is not a new concept; and in fact, it has been around for decades. Play Streets is coming back to the community with the intention of building bridges to some areas where larger barriers to play may exist. The current goal of the program is to develop a partnership with local schools and to have Play Streets occur once a week during the school year. All families and children are welcome to attend this weekly event. The environment at Play Streets has no limitations. Play Streets eliminates all language and mobility barriers. The activities are designed for the community to come together and for children to enjoy playing with others from the neighborhood.

This summer, Play Streets focused on apartment complexes, and the team of staff visited 12 different locations. As the Parks and Recreation truck arrives with all of the supplies, curious and excited children and adults are already waiting to see what the truck holds for their special night. The most popular activities for children are giant Jenga, a life size checker board, human connect 4, and group games led by the Parks and Recreation staff. In addition to games, there are also activities for you and your family to be active. Hoola hoops, jump ropes, and opportunities to run and compete for prizes round out the night. The fun during Play Streets is endless. Kona Ice Garland attends the events to serve the attendees their savory snow cones. These offer a yummy way to cool down after a great time. Look for Play Streets at your school this fall! Story by Nicole Smith

Senior Lunch Program

Both senior centers provide a hot lunch Monday through Friday for senior citizens ages 60 and older. A donation of $.75 per meal is suggested. Patrons under 60 may purchase a lunch at the full fare of $6.00 if they are available, and it does not displace a qualifying senior from receiving a meal. This service is supported, in part, by the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) and Dallas County.

Senior Transportation

Transportation is provided for seniors ages 60 and older from their homes to either one of the senior centers each weekday. The program is offered free of charge, however, participants must reside within the city limits of Garland and must participate in the lunch program to qualify for this service. Additionally, transportation for local doctor appointments and to Parkland Hospital in Dallas can be provided depending on availability.
