MESSAGE FROM GEORGE FISCHER

“ April hath put a spirit of youth in everything ”
- William Shakespeare

Dear Members,

April is a month of transition that ushers in a period of renewal with birds singing and the first flowers of spring. It is a month of holidays including National Garden Month and National Arbor Day or you can raise a glass on National Beer Day. To quote Shakespeare, “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything”so take some time to enjoy the many activities that are planned for you at the Club this month.

A great way to jump into spring is to join us for the Summer Social on Saturday, April 13th at The View in the KC Golf Club. Our Recreation team has assembled a great line up of camps, clinics, and classes that will be offered this Summer. Many of your favorites are returning this year but look for some brandnew summer adventures and camps that are being introduced. Click here to view the Summer Activity Guide ahead of the Summer Social. Also, mark your calendar for this month’s Cocktails and Crafts which will feature the making of a floral wreath in celebration of Earth Day.

Spring also provides some of the best weather for golf, especially here in Colorado. Check out the new Golf Fit 365 Class in the Movement Studio that combines exercises from the Titleist Performance Institute and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Or if Tennis is your game, it’s time to get ready for the upcoming season. Join us for USTA Bootcamp which is a high intensity clinic focusing on the game’s fundamentals.

We hope that you will join us for “Breakfast Bites” with Strata Med - a series of engaging educational sessions with one of our Strata Med clinicians. April’s event will be held on Thursday April 18th in the Grand View Restaurant. This month’s gathering will be hosted by Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine, Dr. Shane Wells, from Strata Med.

Sincerely,

April 2024 03

TEED UP

SPRING HAS ARRIVED

The golf season is ever approaching as our weather continues to get better and better. Course conditions will continue to improve as we forge into season. Online tee times are available 7-days in advance starting at 8:00 a.m. in April. Aerification is scheduled for April 1st – 12th.

This season we will continue to have earlier tee times on the tee sheet beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Friday’s, Saturday’s, and Sunday’s, beginning Memorial Day Weekend, Friday, May 24th – Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. These tee times will be in 7- and 8-minute intervals for one hour. On days when events are scheduled these earlier tee times will not be available. Walking restrictions will begin on Saturday, May 25th, no walking prior to 9:00 a.m.

As a reminder, singles, twosomes, and walk ups do not have priority on the golf course. Please do not expect to play through foursomes and threesomes that have scheduled tee times. Our goal is to create a more enjoyable golf experience for the entire membership, we ask that you do your part to assist us in achieving this goal.

SPRING COURSE AERIFICATION

BEGINS APRIL 1ST

Aerating greens will create a short-term disruption in the golfer’s eye, but the longterm benefits seriously outweigh any inconvenience. Although it may seem like our maintenance team likes to mess with the golfer and aerate twice a year because we like to, the truth is that aeration is an extremely labor-intensive process that takes many hours of hard work. Here are five of the top reasons we take the time to get this process done right.

1. WE AERATE TO IMPROVE, NOT ANNOY

Putting greens receive more traffic than any other playing surface. The aeration process helps relieve the compaction caused by all that traffic. It also helps create a firm, smooth putting surface by controlling thatch and promoting healthy turf roots.

2. SAND AND SEED

A heavy application of topdressing following aeration may appear to make putting greens less playable. However, filling aeration holes with sand helps create a smoother surface. Sand also creates channels for water and air movement, dilutes thatch and helps putting greens recover from aeration more quickly. This is our opportunity to inter-seed bent grass into the greens creating good seed and soil contact for germination.

3. REDUCE THATCH

Thatch is a layer of old plant material that accumulates at the soil surface. If thatch on putting greens is not diluted by aeration and topdressing, it will act like a sponge, holding water near the surface. Excessive thatch creates soft playing conditions, inconsistent green speeds and increases the risk of disease.

4. GIVE THE SOIL WHAT IT NEEDS

Aeration gives us the opportunity to apply nutrients directly to the soil. We apply any nutrients that are deficient and sweep into the holes with the sand.

5. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

After a long winter of abuse, now is the time to give the greens some love. We aerate in early spring to repair any winter damage and to kick start a healthy growing season.

Aerification will take place April 1st -12th – weather permitting – we will have 18 holes available; course rotations will change based on the daily aeration schedule.

PICKLEBALL TIP OF THE MONTH

This month’s tip is focusing on transitioning in pickleball. Most times when watching a player move forward in pickleball they have difficultly on their next shot. When transitioning you want to make sure you are moving forward after the correct ball that you’ve hit. If you’ve popped the ball high or see your opponent gearing up for a high volley, please make sure to stay back and not move forward. The only time when moving forward is after you’ve kept the ball low to your opponent’s feet as the serving side or if you’ve driven a deep return. Make sure you’ve gotten your opponent off balance before you decide to move in. Be careful of rushing the process moving in too soon.

STRESS MANAGEMENT/ NERVOUS SYSTEM

REGULATION

“It’s not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it.” –Hans Selye

Patients often come into my office in a state of stress. My job is to get them out of that state as quickly as possible. I therefore have an entire toolbox of techniques that help to accomplish this in a rapid fashion. What happens however, when you know that you are in stress mode, and you can’t get in to see me and you need relief as quickly as possible? One quick method is called the “Physiological Sigh,” which is described below.

Take a long slow deep breath through your nose, filling your belly first and then your chest. At the end of that breath, take a second small, forced inhale again through the nose. Then do a long slow exhale out throughthe mouth with pursed lips. Repeat this pattern for 3-5 breaths if you are seeking a quick solution for stress. If you want relief for several hours, then repeat the breathing pattern for 3-5 minutes.

SPOTLIGHT TEAM MEMBER MEET NICK LANG

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE GOLF INDUSTRY?

I have been in the Golf Industry for 15 years. I started my career here at Garden of the Gods Resort and Club. I started here as a greenskeeper in the summers while I went to Coronado High School. I fell in love with the job and decided to make it a career. I have also worked as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent in Monument, Colorado and I held the Senior Assistant Golf Course Superintendent position at Seabrook Island Club in Charleston, South Carolina. My wife and I moved back home to Colorado in May 2022.

WHICH GOLF EVENT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST EACH YEAR?

I look forward to Camel Drivers Member/Guest Tournament. This is by far our biggest tournament of the year.

WHAT TYPE OF PREPPING DOES YOUR TEAM HAVE TO DO IN ORDER TO PREPARE FOR THESE LARGE GOLF EVENTS?

Events like Camel Drivers are always fun. It's like preparing for our own U.S. Open. We dry the greens out, double cut, and roll twice a day. This allows us to speed up and firm up the greens, making it very challenging for the tournament. On tournament days, we will prepare the course both in the morning and also in the evenings. These double shifts during the tournament days are long, but it's great to see the golf course in the evening light.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I absolutely love my team. The Golf Maintenance Department is like a second family to me. We have tremendous teamwork and all get along very well. I love hiring and meeting new seasonal employees each year. I like training new employees on the golf course and showing them why we love being out on the course.

I cant even begin to describe the dedication our team has. Even though our job is hot and dirty, we can all truly say we love being here and strive to give the best golfing experience that we can to our members and guests.
