As salaamu 'alaykum, Dear Parents / Caregivers, Praise be to Allah (SWT), Master of the Universe We Glorify Him and thank Him for His Numerous Gifts (our Faith, health, safety, benefits of our 5 senses, and the opportunity to be in a school environment where our staff strive to give our students their best each and every day). Sometimes we just need to take a moment and treasure the Blessings bestowed on us. Shukr Alhumdulilah for everything that we have. With that thought of gratitude, I would like to sincerely thank our whole school community (staff, parents and students) for continually supporting the College in all areas this term. A special thank you to our parents who support their children whether it is assisting with homework or special events. I am deeply grateful to our dedicated staff who continue their tireless efforts towards events and preparing quality learning experiences for the students to become the future leaders of our community, In Sha Allah! It has been a very productive start to Semester 2, with many significant events that have taken place thus far; which you will see highlighted within this newsletter edition. We were privileged to have a visit from the Minister for Playford Mr John Fulbrook who presented the awards at our last Recognition Award Ceremony. He has been very supportive and interested in the progress of our College and we thank him for this. I would like to conclude by wishing our students the best for the remainder of the term and look forward to seeing amazing results as they complete their Term 3 examinations over the next couple of weeks. May Allah (SWT) bless us and shower us with a prosperous future keep us safe and healthy, Ameen! Jazak Allahu Khayrun

Both National Science and Book week have been successful events with Science Week aiming to encourage our children to spark an interest in STEM and book week to engage students in the love of books to build their literacy skills During Science Week students had the opportunity to participate in experiments related to this year’s theme Looking through Glass in line with the Year of Glass For Book Week the theme was Dreaming with Eyes Open and all our classes showcased some amazing drama performances based on one of the chosen CBCA shortlisted books.

MRS BANJAN Assalam Alaykum to all our Garden College Family, We have had a wonderful and productive start to Term 3 with many interesting and educational programs organised. Our youngest students our little receptions had their 100 days celebration by participating in fun activities, enjoying pizza and dressing up as elderly men and women, looking so cute! I would like to thank the parents for supporting their children in this event. For the first time our Year 5 and 6 boys and girls participated in the Bachar Houli Cup which is a football national schools program delivered across five states for both primary and secondary schools. The BH Cup engages Islamic school students in an encouraging environment to introduce and promote the Australian football game. Our students performed well making it to the grand final which was an amazing outcome as this was the first time they have been playing and against other teams who have had prior experience. We are all very proud of them but most important they had an enjoyable experience engaging and thriving within our community. Many of our students in our primary campus from Year 3 to Year 6 have participated in a class round of the Prime Ministers 2022 Spelling Bee Our students have the opportunity if they do well, can proceed to state and national finals with prizes up for grabs that includes a trip to Canberra to meet the Prime Minister We wish our students all the best In Sha Allah!

What an exciting and eventful term 3! Our students engaged in an inspiring and wondrous Science Week, where they watched and participated in experiments. Science Week was a success with the middle school students enjoying activities run by the Year 11 students and Mrs Khelil. The theme of Science Week this year was Looking through Glass, so the activities planned were all about the use of glass in everyday life as seen in the video (click here).

Our Year 11 Maths Methods students and Essential Maths have been working on their folios and studying for their SATs The Methods class have been learning about statistics and the application of differentiation in manufacturing and designing equipment. The Essential Mathematics students are currently working on their folio task and are showing great progress! It is only halfway through the term and students are already showing excellent progress. We look forward to a successful completion to the term.

In our studies, the Year 10 students are focussing on chemical Sciences, conducting experiments safely to form a solid understanding about chemical reactions and balancing the chemical equations.

Alhamdulillah!

Students paid $1 to participate and coloured in a page chosen by the Literacy Committee

A total of 108 of our students from Reception through to Year 6 participated in this competition and the money that they entered with will be used towards the final prize Two students from each year level with the best entries were chosen and they received part of their prize at the end of Book Week We also had the opening of our annual Scholastic Book Fair which is run by our school librarian Brother Mohammed who is also on the Literacy Committee The fair opened on Monday 22nd August and was to end on Friday 28th August but due to its popularity and demand also ran on the following Monday! The fair is a unique opportunity for the children to be introduced to books that are available in the world outside of school and to take these home and make a part of their reading lives. Mashallah, our children certainly demonstrated their love of books and reading as they spent over $1500 dollars on items from the book fair. As a result, Scholastic will be rewarding us by returning 20% of that towards spending on our own s h l lib Th $300 i ill b d i th fi l p t

This Year’s theme which is chosen by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) was Dreaming with Eyes Open An array of ideas stem from this theme including allusions to our Indigenous Australian history and culture of Dreamtime stories It also promotes the idea that reading is just like dreaming but with eyes open because when we read, we use our imagination to make meaning of the text

The Literacy Committee, Garden College teachers and students are relishing the success of our Book Week celebrations for 2022 We had a fabulous week full of fun activities for the children which took much hard work and effort from everyone involved We are so proud of the way in which the children, teachers and parents participated in our events with their encouragement and enthusiasm and passion for reading and books!

Several activities were planned around the theme and our celebrations kicked off with a colouring competition

Every class from Reception to Year 6 also created a play to perform at our assemblies on Days 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Book Week based on one of the 8 CBCA shortlisted books that the Literacy Committee purchased for this year’s Book Week or one of their choices. Our students all voted for the best performance who was Ms. Hiba’s Year 1 class for their performance of the book, The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson (Click here to watch their performance) It was an amazing performance and a well earned win as the Junior Primary children spoke walked the floor so bravely and confidently We also ran our costume parade on Day 3 where children paraded their amazing costumes of characters, they had read in books this year.

A huge thank you to our school Principal, Dr Ahdielah, for having faith in the Literacy Committee to run this event as well as we did Also, to Brother Fawad who spent much time editing the footage of all our events and uploading these to YouTube for you all our Garden College family to see Lastly, a super huge thank you to all the staff, students and parents who got involved in Garden College’s Book Week Celebrations for 2022 We look forward to running our next events which include the Spelling Bee in Term 4! RECEPTION 2022

Mrs

Term 3 is an exciting time for many schools with whole school celebrations like Science Week and Book Week but it’s even more of an exciting time for many Receptions across Australia as they hit the special milestone of being at school for 100 days! This year was no exception! Each morning, receptions have been counting down the day to hit their special milestone. This celebration ties in with our learning in History “What are Celebrations?” We have been learning about lots of different celebrations and the traditions and customs that revolve them. We have learnt that celebrations are about spending time with your family and friends, decorating your house and having lots of fun. This year, Receptions were put forth the challenge of dressing up as 100 years olds and boy did some of the dress ups, not disappoint! It was great to see so many adorable grandpas and grandmas at school for the day. All activities on the day revolved around our magic number, 100! We made 100 fruit loop necklaces, wrote what will we do and look like when we are 100 years old and finished off the day by having a shared lunch and movie. Receptions had a fun filled day! E

YEAR 6

QURAN SHAYKH YUSUF Assalamu Alaikum, I am so pleased to see our students back at school this term and I am looking forward to all the fantastic learning the students will be taking part in. Over the past 4 weeks, students have been working very hard to get back into the school routine. We have had a very busy start to the school term and have done lots to get ready for the coming Quranic exams in Week 7. Students have also been busy revising their previous surahs for the Annual Quran Competition in Week 9. As you all know that the objective this subject (Quranic) is to instil the love of Allah through learning his book in the hearts of our next generation and create in them the routine of reading the Quran and apply its rulings to their daily lives. For students to succeed in their reading the Quran and memorisation, parental support is required Please spare sometime and discuss with your children about the Surah that they learned at school and encourage them to revise their surah all the time.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Commit yourself to the Qur'an, for by Him in whose Hand is my soul, it is surely more prone to break away than a camel in its bind. May Allah grant our students beneficial knowledge and help them stead fast in religion In Sha Allah

ARABIC

MS NAJAH Reception and Year 1 students have experienced this amazing opportunity to learn Arabic through the Quran, using the technique used in the text books. Students' reading and writing skills were enhanced and this brought the students to the next level in learning the Arabic language. They know how to write days of the week in Arabic and are able to recognise differences between different Arabic letters. Our students have also practiced new words, learnt the correct pronunciation and learnt the meaning behind the stories of the Quran. I would like to congratulate my students for their hard work and motivation I would also like to send special thanks to their fantastic parents and families for helping and supporting their children and In Sha Allah this will lead them to big achievements and future success

SACE NEWS

MR DAVOS I Hope everyone is having a fantastic Term 3 as I recap some of the things the SACE students have been getting up to recently We’re well and truly into the thick of things this term with us entering the final half of the year. Our SACE students have now finished their first semester of Stage 1 work and are now currently working on their second semester We recently had our Year 10’s compete in Port Adelaide Football carnival as part of the SACE program we run with the Port Adelaide Football club. This program is only offered to a few select schools in the state, and we’re lucky enough to be included in it. As you can see from the pictures, the students had a fantastic day of team building and working together to do their best against the other teams. While we might not have won on the day, both the girls and boys teams performed admirably and we placed in a respectful top 10 for both teams we had. Well done to both the girls and the boys! Our Year 11’s are currently doing their Outdoor Education subject and they recently attended their first activity which was indoor rock climbing. While they were a bit apprehensive at first, watching them get more confident and develop more skills, they were able to keep pushing themselves and more than a few of them were able to reach the top of the climb Some of the more daring students even tried some of the harder courses and were able to complete them Hopefully we will get a few more climbs in before the term is over and they also have camp to look forward to next term. A special shout out the Joudy A and Hamza D for their efforts in scaling the wall.

And to finish up we recently had Book Week here at the senior campus As per usual, we saw our students come together to try and build different door decorations to show off their appreciation for their favourite characters and stories And on the actual day, we had a parade in which the teachers and students who attended, came together to appreciate the effort that everyone put in. It was fantastic to see all the original and exciting costumes. We also spent time discussing the theme with the students in the English classes and reminding them that Book Week isn’t just about dressing up, but it’s about appreciating books. That’s all from me! I hope you’re all keeping safe and looking out for each other. Feel free to contact myself if you want to discuss anything to do with the SACE or any other questions you might have.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon His final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), to his household and all those who follow him.

ALIM

Remembering Allah’s blessings and always being grateful for it is an essential requirement of our faith Last year around this time, we were struggling with the impacts of Covid which had restricted our normal life and schooling. Alhamdu Lillah, we are in much better shape now, however this does not mean that we are immune from any future tests. So, we must always remain aware of our duties and keep connected with Allah through His remembrance and appreciation of His countless bounties Utilising our time wisely is crucial as knowledge comes through effort, sincerity, and good use of the time.

Many of our youth and students are wandering off and wasting their precious time Our duties as parents and care givers are to constantly observe their behaviour towards how they are utilising their time at home and remind them about the value of their time. Every single second wasted can never be replaced or compensated, the failure in spending time with beneficial activities only means that we have thrown away something very precious and invaluable.

Welcome to Semester 2 of the academic year of 2022 and to the new Islamic calendar year of 1444 A H May Allah make it a successful and fruitful year for us!

Time is something that is of vital significance in Islam Its importance is very clear in al Qur’an when Allah Subhaanahu Wata‘aala swears by it at the beginning of several surahs AlAsr, Al Fajr, AlDhuha and Al Lail. And the Prophet PBUH valued time and encouraged us to be vigilant with time.

Let us begin by thanking the Almighty Allah for His countless blessings; Islam, safety, good health, opportunity to learn etc.

Time is our age and our age is the capital for our life that has already been predetermined. It must be adequately filled in determining our success in this life and the Hereafter

The kids learning of the Quran and Islamic lessons shouldn’t be limited to memorise the selected Surahs of the Quran or get good report which are also important, but the most important aim should be how our children improve their Akhlaq and implement what they learnt in every day.

QURANIC STUDIESSECONDARY SHAYKH ABDULSALAM

The best activities for us in learning the Quran, being able to read it with proper pronunciation and Tajweed, understand its meaning and implement its teachings in our lives. At Garden College, we have a whole school approach of learning Islam and living Islam through respect, care, brotherhood, and sisterhood and achieving the best result in all areas of learning As every term and semester, this term is equally important Besides other curricular activities take place in this term i.e. Science Week, Book Week, AFL sports activities that our students enjoyed we are organising the Annual Quran Competition. It is an important activity that all the students in both campuses take part. The qualifying round starts from Week 5 and the final Quran Competition Day will take place at the Parafield Campus during Week 9 In Sha Allah. Therefore, we urge all the students to practice the set Juz, Surah and ask parents to encourage their children to revise their Quran at home In Islamic studies, this Semester we have started Part II of the Islamic Studies Books in all the year levels from 7 10 as we have successfully completed Part 1 last Semester. The focus of this term is Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) where the students will learn about various Fiqh topics such as puberty and the Islamic obligations of puberty, Tayammum, Prayer of the sick, shortening the Prayers etc. We ask Allah to grant our students the beneficial knowledge and bless us Safety! re-enactment

On the authority of ibn ‘Abbaas radiyAllaahu ‘anhuma, the Messenger sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam said: “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good.” • (al Bukhaari)

Assalamu Alaikum to our Garden College families We have had a great Term 3, we have been practicing both AFL Footy and Basketball for P E and our students have really improved in their skills We also got to compete in the Bachar Houli Cup during a day as an excursion. The Bachar Houli Cup is designed to provide male and female Muslim students attending Islamic schools the opportunity to participate in an interschool sports program. The involvement aims to provide an opportunity to engage young people into mainstream communities with a sense of confidence and breaking down cultural and religious barriers. The Bachar Houli Cup has involved over 8,000 participants and over 30 schools in the last 6 years to ensure a positive transition into community sports Our Year 5 8's all got the opportunity to play at a proper SANFL ground and the students improved their skills drastically on the day We thank everyone involved in the Bachar Houli Cup and we can't wait to be apart of it next year
