Why workshop skincare is more important than you thought by Mike Ruff, GW Editor

With hands perhaps being the most important tool for any vehicle technician, GWTV reports on the importance of looking after your skin in the workshop. HEALTH professionals claim occupational skin disease is a serious threat for vehicle technicians, yet it’s an issue that goes largely unreported. With frequent and prolonged exposure to oil, grease, cleaning and degreasing products, posing a very real risk of skin conditions such as

dermatitis, it’s a threat that you ought to be aware of. What’s more, under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, employers have a number of duties and responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace. One such responsibility is to provide suitable washing facilities for all employees and manage the control of hazardous materials providing necessary protective measures where required. Jeff Bell, managing director at Deb Ltd, the company behind the renowned Swarfega brand, told GW: “Technicians can actually ruin their hands in a very short period of time. “Skin disease can affect them in many different ways, both physically and psychologically. “It’s a very serious illness.”
