You think she’s content with 4 Louisiana State Records, a USPA National Bench Record and an IPL World Bench Record? Nah, that stays lit and her hunger can only be temporarily satisfied by feeding her more iron to lift until the smoke clears and she stands triumphant on the platform once again knowing that she won those medals long before under the bar in her driveway with no one to see her grind except me and you. Give Annette a follow @valeria5331 and salute her grind with a THANK YOU for the DAILY DOSE OF MORNING MOTIVATION

EQUIPMENT REVIEW

When you outgrow the weights on your cable stack, you can either buy a whole new machine or grab one of the new add on weight pins. But which one is right for you? I took the The Bare Steel Stacked Weight Pin and the GymPin V2 to two locations to test them out head to head to see which product is the best way to add weight to a cable stack!

COVER STORY

When

the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most of New York City along with the rest of the world, ex-rugby player, Rock Hoffman, didn't let it derail his burgeoning powerlifting career. Instead, he reached out to his network of friends, scoured Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for weights and when all else failed, he got creative with buckets.

PERSISTENCE PAYS Rock seems to have not lost strength, recording a nearly forty pound jump in his previous bench press 1RM after training exclusively at home on a small 8x4 platform that takes up most of the space in his studio apartment. It's so cramped in there, that he has to store most of his plates in two separate closets! Despite the cramped quarters and some noise complaints when his downstairs neighbors objected to heavy deadlift sessions, Rock was also able to maintain his strength in the squat and deadlift.

HOW DID HE DO IT?

The biggest thing that jumped out while talking to Rock was how he approaches obstacles as opportunities to improve. "Summer 2020 the price of weights was high so I bought these huge bags of concrete from Home Depot, filled buckets up with them and added water. Now each bucket weighs 58.6 pounds," he said. "The instability has definitely helped with missed grooves." That mental toughness may be something he learned on the rugby pitch, after all,, spending your afternoons imposing your will physically on others for over 80 minutes long with only short breaks for water can change a person. If Rock can continue to apply this mental toughness and enthusiasm to training, there's no telling what he can accomplish in powerlifting.

CHECK MEASUREMENTS

FIGHT PORTION CREEP

SMALL CHANGES

A pound of muscle is about 1/3 the size of a pound of fat, so from a density perspective, as you build muscle, it’s your measurements that change the most. Measure yourself with a measuring tape (it’s a fabric tape that can be found in the sewing dept. at WalMart). Neck, Shoulders, Bicep, Chest, Waist, Hips, Thigh, and Calf. Use the same side of your body for all of your measurements and do this once a month.

Sorry, we're talking about water here. Water not only fills you up without adding extra calories but it also frees up your liver and kidneys to process waste products and can even stimulate natural fat burning.

Eating too much of anything will put weight on you. So it's important to keep track of your portions.

Precision Nutrition Level 2 Coach Michelle Simpson says, "Make only one small change at a time so you can dial in what works for you.

WATCH THE SNACKING Snacking, especially when you're watching television or some other activity that hinders the way you monitor your calorie intake, can be a silent progress killer.

But there's no need to carry around one of those special plates that look like they came out of your kid's elementary school cafeteria. Randy Olson, who lost over 190lbs, advocates using your hands.

"A palm size portion of protein about the thickness of a deck Breen, who teaches Heather of cards is usually about 4 oz. SLEEP MORE

She says accounting for your gender is key weight loss. "For men, belly fat is usually the thing that will go. The scale might not move but over time, your belt notches will need to go tighter and tighter. For the ladies, I’ve found that as painful as it is to do, a food journal is key, especially in the beginning."

Calorie Counting Works, But For some, counting calories is not the easiest method to lose weight and keep it off. If you're counting calories, you need to know the caloric value of everything you put in your mouth, from food you cook yourself at home from scratch (math) to anything you order from a restaurant and even how many sticks of chewing gum you can have without going over. If you just said, "That's not the life I deserve" have no fear. We've got your back. We wanted to know the most efficient or at least easiest to implement way to lose weight so we reached out to Randy Olson, who has lost 195 pounds not by counting calories but measuring portion size.

Why You Should Watch Even if you've already found a method for losing weight that's working, it's helpful to have additional tools in your toolbox for once you've reached your goal weight so you don't experience the dreaded rebound effect. Randy shares his simple methods for making sure that what you eat supports your workout goals without leaving you hangry or making you a calorie nerd at family gatherings, asking your host awkward questions about whether she weighed that spoonful of butter before she added it to the recipe.

Interview

THAT TIME WE INTERVIEWED CHRIS DUFFIN BEFORE ZOOM WAS A THING We're proud to say that we introduced Kabuki Strength founder, Chris Duffin, to Zoom. In an hour long conversation, we covered his childhood, the philosophy behind Kabuki Strength products as well as what causes some product ideas to never see the showroom floor. This was an eye opening dialogue that allowed Chris to unpack his heart for not simply copying what's already on the market, but only creating products that would be of substantial benefit to the lifting community that enabled a homeless boy from the Pacific Northwest to become a successful serial entrepreneur who is now able to support other lifters as well as help the under privileged. Chris pulls no punches when explaining why Chinese companies have such a huge advantage over American made products and Kabuki Strength's commitment to support blue collar workers even if it means sacrificing a few bargain shoppers. Check out our conversation today and prepare to have your mind changed forever.
