This has truly been a semester full of blessings and opportunities. As a reflection on this semester I feel as though the chapter has been revived and has really claimed its territory hear at THE Pennsylvania State University. This semester has given the chapter a moment to shine and really prove itself to the community here on and off campus. Not only have students taken a notice to our achievements around campus, other organizations and faculty members have also commended us on our achievements.

It has been an honor to serve as the Editor to The Sphinx of the Gamma Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. this semester as a neo and I have enjoyed delivering these newsletters for you brothers to read and keep up with the chapter. Since I will be graduating this semester I will be passing this role on this next brother. I have appreciated my time as an undergrad within this fraternity and I plan to continuously give back.

With that being said I hope you enjoy the last installment to our 2011-2012 Volume 1 of the Gamma Nu Newsletter.

It Affects Us All It Affects Us All was our Ebony and Ivory Week event. This event focused on the separation of diversity within our Penn State campus. The program began with a brief skit that was created

by Bro. Phillip McCall. The skit highlighted how an issue that affects the whole university usually is only tackled by a minority of students. The greater meaning of the skit was to highlight how “First of All, Servants of All, We shall Transcends All.”

organizations should start teaming up on causes as well as diversifying their organization. At the end of the program we had different organizations come and give brief presentations to the members of our audience, educating them on different going on with their organization as well as around campus.

Miss Black & Gold Pageant This year’s Miss Black & Gold Pageant and Ball was a huge success. We had five beautiful contestants: Yvonne Winborne, Tamara Hall, Quanisha Smith, Ejiro Enaohwo, and Keri Atwell.

This year the event was held at The Atherton Hotel and the room was completely packed. This year Miss Black & Gold was coordinated by Bro. Santwon Hines. Miss Serenity Ireland and Miss Sydney Henderson were this year’s pageant moms and they trained the ladies, as well as, coached them through the entire show. The contestants put on a magnificent performance that was both breathtaking and wonderful to watch. Each lady had a

unique talent; Yvonne Winborne performed a beautiful dance sequence, Tamara Hall did a beautiful poem in dedication to Trayvon Martin, Ejiro Enaohwo performed a beautiful rendition of Beyoncé’s “I was here”, Quanisha Smith performed a beautiful monologue uplifting women, and Keri Atwell painted a masterful painting on stage.

Throughout the night there were also individual video clips shown highlighting each contestant and various performances.

Alpher Sylvester performed a masterful poem about black empowerment, Ambitions Dance group put on a great show for the audience, and Nandi

Smith sang two beautiful songs for the audience.

This year our judges were Bro. Chris Thomas, Dr. Baker, and lovely lady from Delta Sigma Theta.

Yvonne Winborne was crowned as this year’s Miss Black & Gold and Miss Scholarship, Tamara Hall was crowned this year’s Miss Gold and Miss Talent, Miss Ejiro Enaohwo was crowned this year’s Miss congeniality and Miss Swim Wear, while Quanisha Smith was crowned this year’s Miss Evening Wear. Use Your Voice “Use Your Voice” was a new program we threw this semester. This semester we decided to take the program to the Altoona Campus as a commonwealth initiative.

The program consisted of games and an overall presentation of how politics and voting works within our governmental

system. The program was a huge success and there was a big turnout. At the beginning of the program there was a quiz given to test the knowledge of the audience on the governmental system.

There was also a jeopardy game played that the crowd seemed to really enjoy. At the end of the program we got the people of the audience who weren’t registered to vote

to register right at that moment.

As a branch off to the program the brothers also did a voters registration drive with the ladies of the Delta Gamma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha here at the University Park Campus.

Study-A-Thon This semester Study-AThon was held on April 30, 2012 to May 3, 2012 in Heritage Hall. Study-AThon is a program that we hold during finals week giving students a quiet place to study along with a free meal to help keep them energized. This semester we received

sponsorship from Chipotle, Pita Pit and Housing and Food Services at Penn State.

They all provided the program with meals for the students to be able to enjoy while studying for their tough finals. This semester it was a packed house and the crowd

seemed to love the chipotle burritos that were donated.

College to Corporate The College Life to Corporate Life (C2C) Program is Alpha Phi Alpha’s national initiative dedicated to assisting College Brothers with the transition from college to the corporate world. C2C was created to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships between members of the fraternity and corporate partners.

This partnership has resulted in not only

rewarding career opportunities for fraternity members, but it has helped increase the diverse talent pool for corporate partners.

Brother Terry Robinson has been selected as one of 23 Alpha men to join the GE/Alpha C2C Leadership Forum’s “Beta Class,” March 21-25, 2012, in Columbia, South Carolina, during the

Southern Regional Convention. In addition, these College Brothers will travel to Greenville, SC as a part of the GE Day immersion to experience our GE Aviation and Energy business units. The "Beta Class" participants will have an opportunity to apply and interview for GE internships and fulltime corporate leadership programs.

Special Recognition The undergraduate brothers of the Gamma Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha have been making everlasting imprints all over campus.

A special congratulation goes out to Bro. Chris Thomas for receiving the PSU Alumni Achievement Award. His name will forever be engraved in the Hintz Alumni centers wall for his outstanding achievement.

Bro. Jarell Mason hosted the Black Girls Rock event that was created by Black Student Union.

Bro. Rondell Jordan hosted the NAACP Image Awards that was created by the Penn State Charter of NAACP.

•

Bro. Jarell Mason was honored with the Academic Achievement Award by Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. given to an individual dedicated to academics as an undergraduate at THE Pennsylvania State University.

Bro. Santwon Hines was honored with the Overall Principles Award given to an individual exhibiting all five principles of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.

•

Bro. Rondell Jordan received a recognition of service award for serving as President for the spring 2012 semester

•

The Chapter is officially in good standing with the NPHC.

•

Bro. Arthur Smith and Bro. Santwon Hines received awards for their service on the central staff of the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments.

•

Charter Bro. Wallace Triplett III spoke at the dedication at Lincoln Hall.

•

Bro. Terry Robinson won Brother of Year at Miss Black and Gold.

•

Bro. Moses Davis received an appreciation award from the undergrad brothers.

•

Bro. John Langley won Academic Brother of the Year.

•

Bro. Chris Thomas won the Alumni of the year award a Miss Black and Gold.

•

Bro. Terry Robinson was elected the new President of the NPHC and of Black Male Leadership Symposium.

•

Bro. Phillip McCall was elected the new Vice President of Communications for the NPHC.
