he Auburn/Opelika Alumnae Chapter has been busy with various activities and gatherings, and we are looking forward to our upcoming plant sale and other events. Anna Claire Stamps Vollers ’01 and Elizabeth Jernigan Rodgers ’75 do an exceptional job of coordinating The Chatterbox so everyone can stay educated of the Gamma Delta news. Thank you both for your award-winning efforts.

We have elected new officers to serve our alum group as Fran Pierson Lyons ’84 stepped down after her loyal service as a fantastic president. It will be hard to fill Fran’s shoes, but she left a well-designed path to follow as I look forward to my new mission as alum president. Our

T

he Gamma Delta Chapter at Auburn University has had yet another wonderful year in 2009-2010.

The 2009 year kicked off with several campus campaigns: two of our very own squirrels, Mary Frances Colley and Stephanie Rector, were in the Top 5 for Miss Auburn, and we also supported Katherine Davis through her campaign for SGA President. Having three coinciding campaigns was overwhelming to say the least, but our sisters were up for the challenge and we were very proud of all of our wonderful candidates!

Although campaign season came to an end, our excitement did not! Pageant season was just beginning. Our very own

have been fabulous in planning our social gatherings and in helping organize our meetings. Susan Lovett Speakman ’85 continues with her steadfast endeavor as the most efficient secretary. She keeps the lines of communication “green” and open through her environmentally-friendly emails informing us of approaching events. I also must thank Dorinda Gunter Miller ’75 for her devoted services as treasurer.

As our undergraduates began this fall in their new chapter room, many alums joined them for an ice cream social during Recruitment as they prepared for Skit Day’s “AlphaGamstand” performances. Laverne Taylor Flanagan ’46, Kimble Manley Eastman ’83 as well as many others honored the collegiates with their unceasing support and attendance. The show was fantastic!

It was a real treat to visit the chapter room, and to see the new residence hall while interacting with all the girls. We must thank Joan Odom Asbury ’78 for her endless involvement in the opening of the new chapter room at the new residence hall in The Village.

Due to the hard work of Joan and others, the chapter room was ready to host August Recruitment. The Auburn/Opelika alums also hosted an open house and kitchen shower to aid in providing needed utensils for the new chapter room.

The newsletter wouldn’t be complete without extending our most sincere thank you to those alums who serve as our courteous hostesses. Dorry Ann Hayes Blackburn ’49 opened up her beautiful home for the New Member Dinner in October. The meal was delicious, the decorations were stunning and the fellowship enjoyable. Our fall fundraiser/pecan sale was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who participated by purchasing.

The Christmas Tea was held at the lovely home of Kelly Gallops Davidson ’89. A nice crowd of mothers and daughters enjoyed the sweets and cookies provided. We also enjoyed our Dutch Treat Dinner on Feb. 25 at Moore’s Mill Country Club, where we discussed the plant sale fundraiser and IRD with the collegiate chapter this spring.

As we continue our year, I encourage each of you to become involved and active in your local alum group.

new Miss Auburn University. In addition, Courtney Hattaway was crowned Miss Glom.

Our sisters continued to have fun as we danced the night away at our many social events such as our “My Tie” Blind Date Party and our spring formal, Swampwater, which was held at the Greystone Mansion. We are so thankful for all the hard work our social chair, Anna Eidson, put into planning all of these wonderful events.

As philanthropy chair, Courtney Blythe did a wonderful job coordinating Wing Jam, our annual philanthropic event held each spring at Buffalo Connection where contestants perform at an open-mic talent show.

With a wonderful turnout this year, we were proud of our donation to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

With the Spring Semester coming to a close, the Gamma Deltas were awarded many campus honors including First Place in Grades (we were First Place in Grades in Fall 2009 as well), First Place in Intramural Sports, and First Place in Greek Sing with our theme, “Breakin’ Free the NUThouse!”

After a long summer break, we all rushed back to Auburn, anticipating the viewing of our brand new chapter room. Special thanks go out to Megan Tucker, Property Coordinator, and all of the tremendous alumnae who generously gave their time and support. The compliments on our chapter room have been endless, and we all love our new home!

Once again, Recruitment was an extraordinary success!

Lanier Smith, Mary Frances Colley and Katelyn Simpson worked around the clock to ensure we had the best pledge class of all. We initiated 55 new members into the Gamma Delta Chapter on Oct. 11, 2009.

“Mama Nut” Maggie McKinney, along with her New Member Assistants, kept the baby squirrels busy all semester long. Whether attending a Tacky Tourist Swap or a New Member Meeting, the girls were always having a great time bonding and learning more about what it means to be a sister of Alpha Gamma Delta.

Following Initiation, the annual Feast of Roses was held at the Robert Trent Jones Marriot Hotel and Conference Center. Rachel Anderson and Lauren Drake worked diligently to make this special time possible. They also organized a delicious Homecoming BBQ for the Auburn Homecoming football game. It was a fun time for alumnae and families to come together and support our Auburn Tigers!

Not only was our Alpha Gam family excited about the game, we had our very own Homecoming Candidate, Abby Womack! She went through two vigorous sets of interviews and was selected as one of the final five candidates.

The thrill of supporting our sisters is constant in Alpha Gamma Delta, and Gamma Delta chapter is excited to start off our 2010 year right by beginning campaigning for Katie Parish as she runs for Miss Auburn. We wish her the best of luck!

None of our success would be possible without the love and generous support of our alumnae. We are so very thankful for each and every one of you. The Gamma Deltas are looking forward to another amazing year!

What Gamma Delta means to me

Alpha Gamma Delta has been an active part of my life for over 30 years. Thirty years is a hard number to type, as it seems just yesterday that I remember living on the second floor of Dorm F. There were joyous times, such as being accepted to graduate school or having a member selected for a special honor; sad times, such as breaking up with a boyfriend; laughable times, such as “Is that my phone?” being yelled down the hall because the only available phones were attached to the wall in each room; and fun times, when we were playing cards late into the night or having pebbles hit our windows from the guys in the parking lot (remember our dorm was men-free in those days!) trying to entice us to go get ice cream at the Flush. Lots of great memories with wonderful sorority sisters can still be remembered just as if it were yesterday!

Sharing sisterhood with my daughters has been a highlight of my life! I have been triple blessed in that all three of my daughters are also Auburn Alpha Gamma Deltas. For them to have the opportunity to join with the outstanding Gamma Delta Chapter members makes my donated time to the International Fraternity well worth the effort.

Currently, Elizabeth Stutts Thompson is serving as the Finance Advisor for Gamma Phi Chapter (Georgia Tech) and Rebecca Stutts Hovater is serving as a Recruitment Specialist for the Fraternity.

Iras Fearn Smith ’54. Iras was excited to see The Chatterbox again after not receiving it for several years. Her granddaughters Francis Arden Jackson ’06 and Caroline Jackson ’09 are current members. Iras sees Nancy Poole Van Cleave ’53 frequently, and the two were also in grammar and high school together. Iras enjoys reading The Chatterbox since she finds familiar names she hasn’t seen in more than 50 years!

Nancy enjoyed a reunion with Inez Burts Colley ’65 and Kitty Nunn Willett ’64 in the spring of 2009. She says she and Kitty have been able to nurture their friendship over the years with Air Force assignments together and Kitty’s job with Delta Airlines. Nancy also recently got to see her Gamma Delta “Big Sister” Sharon Barbre Crocker ’65, whom she hadn’t seen in nearly 40 years. Sharon and her husband Charles visited the Lowes in Lexington, VA. Nancy and her husband live in Lexington where he teaches math at Southern Virginia University and the Virginia Military Instutite, since retiring from the United States Air Force. They have four daughters.

Daughter Jennifer Lowe Bowers ’91 lives in Germany where her husband Matt is stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base. They have two boys. Says Nancy, “The ties we made back in Alpha Gam at Auburn have been some of my

LeAnne shares a story about Gamma Delta chapter founder and longtime leader Helen Bowman Salmon: “Helen would always look at the backs of our shoes, especially heels, and insist that they have no scuff marks. She would politely and firmly suggest that we either polish our heels or get new shoes. I always kept my ‘Helen pair of shoes’ for only Gamma Delta events with Helen. She was forever looking down at our feet when we went to important events and represented Gamma Delta. I went to Convention with her one year in Mexico and she remarked about my shoes after being out sightseeing! Of course, it was in a loving Helen manner, but I got the message. “

Martha’s eight years of effort were rewarded as she led the way in collecting 1.6 million Campbell Soup Company labels for Springwood School in Lanett, AL, in order to receive a brand new 2010 Dodge Caravan SXT. The school’s headmaster remarked, “I see many people who have great ideas and help make short-term projects successful. I cannot remember a time or a person in my entire career when a project of eight years was pursued with such passion.”

Deborah White Kranzusch ’74. Deborah is a fifth-grade math teacher at Montgomery Academy and was named ALFA’s Teacher of the Month for August 2009. She says the measure of success isn’t always easy to gauge, but adds it is clear to those who matter most: her students. She received $1,000 from ALFA as part of the recognition program and her school recieved $1,000 from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

Caroline Lipscomb Hassanpour ’75. Caroline and her family moved to Maryland in 2009 and love living there. She says both her girls are doing well in school, and they enjoy living just 38 miles from Washington, D.C. Suzanne Lawrence Chandler ’80. Suzanne lives in Carrollton, GA with her husband Cary. She is an informatics nurse and the director of clinical content for Greenway Medical Technologies. The couple has four children: Scott, who is at Auburn; Mary Lawrence Chandler ’05, a Gamma Delta and an Auburn graduate; Chapple, a

Says Suzanne, “Our family continues to enjoy Auburn football season, especially when Cary and I have the opportunity to tailgate with our old friends from Auburn, including my Alpha Gam sisters!”

Patty Mosley ’84. Patty was recently awarded the Arc of Epsilon Pi for her work with the Gamma Phi Chapter at Georgia Tech. She has been treasurer of Gamma Phi’s House Association since 2001. She has lived in Atlanta since leaving Auburn and is currently the vice-president of global workforce planning – university for Duff & Phelps, a financial Advisory firm.

Elisabeth Jayne Snell Wang ’92. Elisabeth married husband Scott Graham Wang in August 2007 and is currently employed by Piedmont Healthcare as a physician communications specialist.

Scott is a professional photographer. Elisabeth and Scott are a husband/wife wedding photography team and can be found online at www.scottwangphoto.com.

Joanna Barnett Goodman ’93. Joanna’s husband Garrett was lead architect on the new residence halls in the Village at Auburn. Joanna was able to see the plans for the new Chapter Room and declared it “super nice” with a great view and a large kitchen.

Lindsay Brown ’03. Lindsay is working as a coach with Wellspring Living, a non profit, faith based organization that works to help women out of destructive lifestyles (addictions, abuse, eating disorders, trauma). Wellspring Living also provides a safe haven for girls rescued from sex trafficking. Lindsay lives in the home with the women, to provide structure and 24/7 counseling. In May 2009, Lindsay graduated with her master’s degree from Richmond University in professional counseling, specializing in children and adolescents. Says Lindsay, “I love my job and I am passionate about walking with women along their path of transformation and healing. Feel free to check out Wellspring Living at www.wellspringliving.org.”

lives in Birmingham and teaches sixth-grade math and science at Homewood Middle School. She says, “Everything has been great so far, but it has definitely been very time consuming and overwhelming. I guess it is just part of being a first year teacher!” During the summer of 2008, she was the Panhellenic graduate assistant at Auburn and assisted Panhellenic Council throughout Recruitment by working with Panhellenic executive officers, Phi Chis (Recruitment counselors) and chapter presidents and advisors. During the 2008-2009 school year, she worked for a second year as the SGA graduate advisor, where she worked closely with Tiger Tuesdays and various Cabinet projects.

She completed her master’s degree in education in May 2009.

Leighton Grace Bennett comes from a long line of Alpha Gams: her mom, Blair Bledsoe Bennett ’01 was a Gamma Delta; great-great grandmother was a 1928 initiate of Alpha Gam at Ohio University; her grandmother Sally Driver Bledsoe ’76 was a Gamma Delta, and her aunt, Jill Bledsoe ’05 is also a Gamma Delta.

Whole-hearted service

A

t a young age, I learned that the Greek letters for Alpha, Gamma and Delta were special. With a mother and two aunts who were part of the sorority, I often saw memories from their college days etched with the Greek letters, and knew that I wanted to be a part of that group that seemed so special. Years later I had the opportunity to finally join, and began my own journey as an Alpha Gam. It was great making friends and getting to live the college life surrounded by such a great group of people. Everything was mostly as I’d imagined, except for one new element.

My sophomore year of college, my mom became an advisor and I started to see her at chapter meetings.

For some girls, this might not seem like a good thing, but I was thrilled at the opportunity to share that part of my life with her.

From there, I became vice president of Recruitment, and we were attending executive council meetings together. The year I was in charge of Recruitment, the chapter also decided to redecorate most of the chapter room, and my mom did a lot of work on that project.

Between all of the duties that Recruitment incurred and the new look of our chapter room, mom and I got to spend a lot of time working together. It made for a great experience to be able to learn, give back and accomplish so much with her.

After I graduated, Mom continued to be an advisor and three years later, she is still there. She has juggled taking care of three other children, running a family business, running her own design business, helping me plan my wedding and everything else that life entails, while still serving the local Alpha Gam chapter. It has been a bit of a challenge for her schedule at times, but she continues to give and invest in the girls there because she truly enjoys it all.

Like anyone who is passionate about something, she puts her whole heart into everything she does. Just one example: she works with Alpha Gams not out of duty, but because she loves it.

Brand new room The most recent project she worked on was the new chapter room. In August of 2009, Auburn University completed a new development, The Village, which houses all campus sororities. The project was a big undertaking – lasting approximately a year – but the end product of the chapter room is truly beautiful. Designed

with plenty of room for six different seating areas, a kitchen, ladies’ room and custom-designed storage room, the new space serves its purpose of comfort and function with room to spare.

Taking a mellow slant on Alpha Gam’s red, buff and green, the walls set an inviting tone in a warm shade of buff, letting the curtain panels, furniture and accessories be the star of the show. Custom made sconces and lamps illuminate the room, evoking a cozy feel, while an Italian wood chandelier is a focal point at the front of the room above the dining table. European vetrinas finished in a soft gray shade serve as trophy cases, and a built-in banquette featuring an antiqued mirrored wall provides a bit of glamour.

As an added touch, the fire doors were finished with mirrors on their façades to soften the commercial look they represented. No detail was overlooked; the room is a welcome change to the typical commercial feel of university interiors. It really invites one to relax and develop relationships.

As represented by the chapter room, sacrifice and hard work are well worth the effort. Through all of the projects my mom has worked on with our Alpha Gam chapter, she set the example of giving back to a group that previously invested so much in her life. I admire her for her service, and know that acts of giving like hers are what will truly keep a group like Alpha Gamma Delta “sisters until the end of time.”

amma Deltas couldn’t be prouder of Alabama State Treasurer Kay Ivey ’64, who is running for Governor of Alabama in the 2010 election. Kay was first elected state treasurer in 2002 and re-elected in 2006 with the largest vote in the contested statewide race.

Kay is a native of Camden and graduated from Auburn in 1967. While at Auburn, she was elected vice president of Auburn’s student body, was on the Homecoming Court, and was involved in many academic and volunteer organizations. She has been a high school teacher, a bank officer and has held positions in state government.

As state treasurer, her motto is “The People’s Money is the People’s Business.” She has worked to make the Treasurer’s Office more transparent, and was the first to put the state’s financial accounts online for all to see.

Kay enjoys the outdoors, is a member of the Alabama Wildlife Federation and is an “Alabama Tree Farmer.” She enjoys spending time on her pontoon boat and has a chow-mix named Bear.

Martha Saye Henderson is fondly remembered as the resident advisor, or “dorm mother” at Alpha Gam’s Dorm F in the 1970s and 1980s.

After she retired from her position in 1989, she moved to Jacksonville, FL. She passed away on Jan. 8, 2010 at the age of 89. She is remembered as a passionate football fan, an avid bridge player and a talented cook.

She is survived by her daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons.
