Bonds of Sisterhood!

A group of girls from two suites in Dorm F, Pledge class of ’79 (initiated ’80), had a first-ever reunion in Destin this past October (2015). Gamma Deltas ’77 initiation year. We try to at least have some type of gathering, large or small, at least every two years, but preferably every year. Some years we just can’t get together, i.e. sick parents, weddings, births, and even tornadoes. One year, Beverly Bains Anderson left in the middle of the night to drive to Atlanta for the birth of her grandchild. By the time we were all up the next morning, she was texting pics of the new baby. The sisterhood never ends!

NEW MEMBER SELECTION PROCESS At TLC 2015, Alpha Gamma Delta launched its new Membership Selection process focusing on connectivity and utilizing technology.

Our collegiate members now use a web based program called Select-ASis to assist with the membership selection process. When meeting with potential new members our sisters focus on their ambition, respect and connectivity to ensure a well balanced membership. With transition support from staff and volunteers, chapters adapted well, resulting in record-breaking membership numbers; we now have more than 13,000 collegiate members!

Susan Scott Carothers writes to us about “Twas the Night before Gameday!”

“Thank you for the interest in my book. It has been such a fun adventure so far. Like I said, I call myself an "accidental author" because I didn't really set out to write a book. I've always loved writing, but I was busy being a wife and a mom while running a corporate event planning business in Montgomery.

My family and I were at the lake watching college football games on opening day of the 2014 football season. My boys, who were 2 & 4 at the time, knew that we were Auburn fans and loved Aubie, but they were fascinated with all of the mascots that they saw on the TV screen that day.

Their excitement and fascination with each mascot is what led me to start typing the words to my book on my iPhone as we continued to watch football.

The book focuses on each SEC mascot and the distinct traditions of each school, however it highlights the fact that we are also a big "family".

I think my family was a little surprised when I actually sent the book concept to 3 publishers the next week...and we were all shocked that one of the publishers was actually interested. :)

That's when the adventure really began: I chose an illustrator who lives on the island of Malta. I waited "patiently" through the very long collegiate licensing process (over a year) and endured MANY changes and tweaks by each university.

After the book was released in November of 2015, I was interviewed on the Paul Finebaum Show, featured on the Rick and Bubba Show and in numerous print publications, and participated in book signings all over the state.

I am currently in the process of planning an SEC book tour for next football season where I hope to visit as many SEC campuses as possible.”

“Twas The Night Before Gameday" is a children's book highlighting the comradery and traditions of the schools and teams that make up the SEC family. Courtney Brennan ’01 is no longer at Madison Square Garden but has now started as the new Director of Artist Experience and Events at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in January (the #2 venue in the country).

Helen Harris Johnson ’68 Wins Girl Scout Leadership Award Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is proud to announce that Helen Johnson will be awarded the area’s first Girl Scout Leadership Award.

The Girl Scouts Leadership Award honors a leader whose life reflects the values in the Girl Scout Promise and Law and who serves as an excellent role model for girls.

Helen Johnson is Group Vice President of Community Development at Columbus Bank & Trust. She is also an artist and a creative and energetic community leader.

She grew up in Columbus, and has served her hometown and the people in it with passion and commitment.

Helen became a Brownie Girl Scout as a second grader at Wynnton School. Her Girl Scout Troop #2 met at the Girl Scout Little House in Weracoba Park, a beloved site whose history she later documented when she became Chair of the Board of the local council. She was honored as a Woman of Distinction by Girl Scouts of Concharty Council in 1995.

Helen taught school and served as a school counselor during the first 18 years of her career, then transferred her gift for teaching and mentoring from school to business. Her love for history, the arts and education is reflected in the ways she works to make our community more vibrant and beautiful.

More than two dozen area organizations benefit from Helen’s generous gifts of time and talent. Among them are Open Door Ministries, the CSU Bo Bartlett Center, ART BEAT, Partners in Education, Springer Opera House, Columbus Museum, and United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley.
