MULTICULTURAL STUDENT PROGRAMS

At the O ce of Multicultural Student Programs (MSP), we foster a hub where Deaf, DeafBlind, Deaf Disabled, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened, and hearing individuals; as well as students of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, firstgeneration students, and others from marginalized backgrounds can come together to discuss, learn, share, and take meaningful action on issues close to their hearts.

DISABILITY SERVICES CENTER

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY INTERVIEW

The American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) is a holistic language evaluation used to determine ASL proficiency. The ASLPI is a 20-25 minute video recorded interactive dialogue between the examinee and the interviewer. The interview is rated by a team of evaluators and examinees are awarded an overall proficiency level on a 0-5 rating scale. Individual graduate programs may require you to take the ASLPI to meet admissions requirements or graduate from the program. It can take up to six weeks to get your ASLPI results after being interviewed. Be sure to schedule this well in advance to meet your program admissions deadline. The Disability Services Center (DSC) helps qualified students with disabilities succeed through equal access to education, academic activities, and housing opportunities at Gallaudet University. GRADUATE LANGUACULTURE IMMERSION PROGRAM

The goal of the Graduate Languaculture Immersion Program (GLIP) is to provide an immersive bilingual environment where graduate students can build on or develop their knowledge of American Sign Language, Deaf culture(s), and social etiquette. Authentic situations are provided to participating students throughout the two-week program with ongoing opportunities for unpacking and creating new expectations for their roles on a signing campus to ensure a positive experience and a strong sense of belonging. The program is held in early August, prior to Graduate Student Orientation and the start of fall classes. Registration is open to all matriculated graduate students.

ASL CONNECT

ASL Connect is intended to be a central resource for learning ASL and about Deaf culture online, with all content created by Deaf ASL-fluent scholars. If you wish to work on your ASL skills while preparing to apply to Graduate School, ASL Connect o ers ways to learn basic ASL online as well as take highly engaging and interactive ASL online courses.

GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is a student organization representing all graduate students at Gallaudet University. Their purpose is to work for the wellbeing of graduate students, including representing the interests of graduate students.

The Graduate Student Resource Center (GSRC) is a one-stop center for graduate students to access the academic support services, career and professional development, and other resources they need to succeed in their programs.

M.S. in Accessible Human-Centered Computing and Policy

The Gallaudet campus is in the heart of Washington, D.C. in close proximity to historical landmarks. The Gallaudet shuttle bus provides easy access to Metro stops enabling you to visit the Greater Washington, D.C. area, which includes Maryland and Virginia suburbs. The nearest Metro station is so close that “Gallaudet U” is in the station’s name.

You will be within easy reach of museums, ethnic restaurants and neighborhoods, sporting and nightlife events, internships and work opportunities, shopping malls, and historical parks. Grab a bike from the Bikeshare stop on campus and visit the farmers’ market either at Eastern Market or at Union Market directly across the street from campus. Order food and drinks from the Signing Starbucks.

Washington, D.C. is home to many potential employers and internship providers.With a large number of deaf people, Washington, D.C. is one of the most accessible cities in the world with interpreting and captioning widely available.

• Houses up to 250 graduate students

• Eight floors with a mixture of single occupancy rooms, double occupancy rooms, and quadruple occupancy suites with private bathrooms

• All rooms have HVAC units, carpeting, and are pre-furnished

• Each floor has one or more large common rooms with large-screen TVs

CAMPUS SAFETY

• Over 75 Blue Light kiosks and 250 cameras on campus with a direct connection to the Department of Public Safety (DPS)

• Campus police are available to escort students and are fully bilingual

• Front gate is manned 24/7

• Gallaudet ID card must be swiped for access to residence halls

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students are charged a higher tuition rate compared to U.S. domestic students. There are various possible funding options available to help with tuition such as the World Deaf Leadership, a biannual award that covers some or all of an international student’s tuition. For more information on international financial aid opportunities, contact the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at isss@gallaudet.edu. International students may also be able to obtain local assistance from their home countries through disability associations or embassies, among other possibilities. Applying as early as possible is best for obtaining financial assistance.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND SCHOLAR SERVICES

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) serves as a resource for easing international students and scholars’ transition to life in the United States and at Gallaudet University from their time of arrival, assisting them in achieving full integration into academics and all areas of campus life, and educating, training, and advocating for these individuals while maintaining compliance with U.S. federal regulations governing international education.

FINANCIAL AID

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The primary source of financial aid for most graduate students comes directly from the programs. Each graduate program receives an allotment of scholarship funds from the Graduate School that they use to recruit their top candidates. Most programs also have a graduate assistant working for them. Graduate assistants work up to 10 hours a week for their program and are provided with tuition coverage and stipends in return.

To have the best chance to qualify for scholarships or assistantships, make sure to submit your application by your program’s date of first consideration,

GALLAUDET FINANCIAL AID OFFICE

Graduate students who are either a U.S. citizen or a eligible noncitizen in a degree-seeking program and have a valid social security number (SSN) can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is required for Federal Work Study programs, need-based scholarships, and graduate loans.

Federal Work Study (FWS) provides part-time job opportunities for graduate students to help pay for their education.

Each program sets their own criteria and timeframe for awarding scholarship funds and graduate assistantships.

Loans are available through the Financial AId o ce for graduate students with at least 6 credits for the semester. You can find current interest rates through studentaid.gov.

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a state-funded program that provides services in every state to disability groups. Participants must be o cially diagnosed with a disability that fits pre-set criteria and may qualify for counseling, guidance, training, job placement, and financial assistance with educational expenses. You can search online to find the closest VR counselor in your home state.
