Dear Friends,
When the time comes for something significant to manifest, there is nothing that can stop it. For far too long, important stories in Black Deaf history remained largely hidden from national awareness because of discrimination and oppression. Those stories are what shaped our Necessity of Now campaign.
For decades following her historic courtroom fight and victory for educational justice for Black Deaf children, the story of Mrs. Louise B. Miller and the 24 Black Deaf students who attended Kendall School Division II for Negroes in the early 1950s during segregation remained a small footnote in history to many people in the deaf community, and to society at large.
Nevertheless, their stories persisted and were slowly accepted by the larger deaf community piece by piece over the years. This journey toward acceptance led us to the formation of the Necessity of Now. The campaign is connected to real-time events in the world, such as George Floyd’s murder in 2020 and the resulting movements toward racial justice. During the demands for justice in 2020, the Gallaudet community rallied around the realization that the world needed to know about the myriad of untold stories of Black Deaf people and the community’s historic and ongoing fight for equality. Each time we engage with history and elevate others who have and continue to experience oppression and discrimination, we are doing restorative justice work.
We recently celebrated one year since the launch of the Necessity of Now campaign. As you will read in the following keepsake book, there have been many special milestones along the way. We, as co-chairs of the Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens Steering Committee, along with Institutional Advancement staff, University leaders, and Center for Black Deaf Studies staff, have had many opportunities to share the stories of Mrs. Miller, the Kendall 24, and of key moments and figures in Black Deaf history.
Even after the eventual conclusion of the campaign, the University and the Steering Committee will remain committed to restorative justice, ensuring that the campaign themes of Awareness, Freedom, Remembrance, and Healing continue to guide our collective actions and initiatives.
Thank you for joining us in this important work. You are helping us honor Black Deaf history and culture, celebrate Black Deaf achievements, and elevate the lives and futures of our Black Deaf students. Your gracious support will be remembered for generations to come.
With gratitude,
Evon Black, ’87 & G-’96 and Dr. Jeremy L. Brunson Co-chairs, Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens Steering Committee
The Necessity of Now funds an outdoor learning space on Gallaudet’s campus called the Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens: A Legacy to Black Deaf Children, research and programming at our Center for Black Deaf Studies, and student scholarships.
The Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens: A Legacy to Black Deaf Children will form a serene, reflective, and sensory-rich environment to honor the enduring impact of Mrs. Louise B. Miller, Kendall School Division II, and the challenges and triumphs experienced by Black Deaf people with three reflective rooms, a small gathering space, and a large outdoor classroom.
The Pathways and Gardens will incorporate four key

Freedom that arose from the arduous journey from being denied access to a local education on Gallaudet’s campus by the Board of Education of District of Columbia, to educational justice which Mrs. Miller’s advocacy won for Black Deaf students, including those from Kendall School Division II.
Remembrance obligates us to give tribute to the parents who were successful in Miller v. Board of Education of District of Columbia which shifted the landscape of Black Deaf education and calls our attention to the fact that the struggle they addressed began before their lawsuit and has continued since their victory.
• Healing means we must remain vigilant as we confront the painful legacy of inaccurate dominant narratives that have perpetuated injustices in the Black Deaf community. We acknowledge the harm caused by these narratives, which have marginalized and silenced voices, perpetuated inequality, and fractured our sense of unity. Yet, in acknowledging this pain, we find strength in our commitment to reconciliation, equity, and fairness
The campaign will elevate CBDS and further its influence on the world. Since its establishment in 2020, CBDS has:
• Conducted extensive research on the history and impact of Kendall School Division II and its 24 Black Deaf students and four teachers.
• Developed a Black Deaf Studies minor.
• Hosted the first-ever Black Deaf Studies symposium in Spring 2023 that was attended by over 300 people.
• Become a hub of support and community for Gallaudet’s Black Deaf students.
• Received national media coverage from The New York Times, USA TODAY, The Washington Post, and Good Morning America.
Many individuals, couples, families, and organizations have joined us and given generously to the Necessity of Now campaign. You have all rallied behind this important work with the understanding that we all must do what we can to elevate the national consciousness of the Black Deaf community and the largely untold story of Mrs. Louise B. Miller and the 24 Black Deaf students and four Black teachers from Kendall School Division II.
As we look back on the campaign milestones, we want to thank all of our supporters. We are forever grateful for your contributions to the campaign.
Follow along below as we commemorate campaign milestones:
On July 22, 2023, Gallaudet University held a historic graduation ceremony on its campus to honor the 24 Black Deaf students and four Black teachers of Kendall School Division II. At the ceremony, the 24 students and their descendants received high school diplomas that had been denied to them more than 70 years ago due to discrimination. The University also proclaimed the
day as “Kendall 24 Day” and issued a Board of Trustees proclamation acknowledging and apologizing for its role in the grave injustice committed against the 24 students. The event received national media coverage by Good Morning America, CNN, and The Washington Post.
President Roberta J. Cordano spotlighted the campaign during her annual Welcome Home address at the end of August 2023. “The purpose of the Necessity of Now campaign is to remember and address our past, to honor
and to celebrate the brave individuals who fought for equality in education, and to catalyze our collective healing,” she said.
The Kendall 24 graduation ceremony and the campaign were featured in a 10-page spread in the fall/winter 2023 issue of Gallaudet Today magazine.
Necessity of Now officially launched during Gallaudet’s Homecoming celebration in October 2023. The campaign commenced on Friday, October 20, with two public events: A presentation by Evon J. Black, ’87 & G-’96, associate director of the Center for Black Deaf Studies, on Mrs. Louise B. Miller and her historic fight for educational
justice for Black Deaf children, and a campaign kickoff party attended by several hundred people.
“We need to let the world know about Louise B. Miller and her fight for Black Deaf education. She is a ‘shero’ we need to recognize,” said Black during her remarks at the Kickoff NOW party.
Gallaudet participated in GivingTuesday, the annual global day of giving, on November 28, 2023 and more than $22,000 was raised for the University. More than half of the donations went to the NOW campaign.
Institutional Advancement staff hosted three GivingTuesday stations on campus during the day with NOW information and swag. Athletics held an intramural event in the evening which featured another GivingTuesday station.
Gallaudet students rose to the challenge and gave generous donations to NOW. The Student Body Government donated $5,000 and the Graduate Student Association donated $3,000.
Gallaudet’s Institutional Advancement team hosted a fundraising event for alumni and donors on January 20, 2024 in Phoenix. About 30 people attended the event at the Blanco Biltmore. President Roberta Cordano gave remarks and Evon Black, ’87 & G-’96, was the star of the program as she shared Mrs. Miller’s compelling story to the group and encouraged attendees to join the NOW movement to create an equitable future for everyone at Gallaudet.
On February 15, 2024 Evon Black led a public webinar about Mrs. Miller, Kendall School Division II and its students and teachers, and the campaign. She was joined by Nicholas Kiego, ’09, Executive Director of the Office of Institutional Advancement and Rebecca Rydstrom, ’02, Director of Alumni Relations. Black,
Kiego, and Rydstrom responded to questions from the enthusiastic viewers.
Gallaudet Today feature story on the Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens
The spring/summer 2024 issue of Gallaudet Today magazine featured an in-depth look at the forthcoming Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens: A Legacy to Black Deaf Children and the Black Deaf consultants who served as co-developers alongside the companies that will design the space.
WITH EVON BLACK, ’ 87 & G-’96
Thursday, February 15 7:30–8:30 P.M. ET
Institutional Advancement staff collaborated with University Communications to create two campaign videos. The first explained the story behind NOW
( gu.live/StoryofNOW ) and the second video focused on the matching gift fund, donor wall, and naming rights opportunities ( gu.live/NOWDonors)
Institutional Advancement held two events in May 2024 to continue to spread awareness about NOW. The first was the annual President’s Circle Commencement Celebration to honor donors who gave $1,000 or more to the University this year. The second was the Gallaudet Staff
Evon Black gave a presentation entitled, “Unveiling Untold Black Deaf Stories,” at the NAD 57th Biennial Conference in Chicago on July 4 2024. Her presentation elevated awareness of Mrs. Louise B. Miller, the Kendall 24, and Gallaudet’s restorative justice efforts, including the NOW campaign. She presented to a full room and attendees were engaged with the content and asked thoughtful questions afterward.
Council Spring Social. Evon Black, ’87 & G-’96, Associate Director for CBDS, Amelia Palmer ’23, Program Research Assistant for CBDS, and Smitha Hanumantha, G-’11, IA Fundraising Campaign Manager, shared campaign details for the group.
On July 22, 2024, we celebrated the one year anniversary of the historic Kendall 24 graduation ceremony with a special gathering with more than 60 guests at the Kellogg Conference Center Hotel for a time to remember and reflect in community on Kendall 24 Day. A mini-exhibit
displayed renderings of the forthcoming Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens: A Legacy to Black Deaf Children, which will be the world’s largest monument to the Black Deaf community as well as an outdoor learning space.
In October 2024, the Office of Institutional Advancement announced that Gallaudet hit an all-time high fundraising record this year with $14.4 million in new gifts and pledges, beating the previous record of $13.2 million set in 1991. Most of the gifts received will support scholarships and the Necessity of Now.
Gallaudet also made its own commitment to the campaign by dedicating unrestricted scholarship gifts and gifts to the Gallaudet Fund to NOW.
Between the record-breaking fundraising and Gallaudet’s contributions, we have secured $19.7 million of the $23 million goal for NOW.
With this achievement, we are in the final stretch of the campaign. We absolutely could not have achieved this success without you. We hope you will continue your support and help us close out the campaign very soon.
